— he has no notion of loving people by halves —
River felt a plethora of emotions when his eyes first laid on the video that showcased two people in their most intimate moment: shock, disgust, sadness, and another emotion he'd rather not dive into. The sadness was mostly for Krista because this wasn't just a tape of a random couple, but of Krista's boyfriend with somebody else. There was an I told you so hanging onto the tip of his tongue but he knew that greeting Krista with that would not bode well. Darn, speaking of Krista. River placed his phone down and pushed himself up from his couch, his hand automatically reaching out to grab the remote control to turn off the TV, putting an end to the old movie he was watching to pass the time. He glanced over at the time, grateful that it was a bit late for classes to take places which meant he'd be able to catch Krista at the dorm. Oh god, he hoped that she wasn't out doing something reckless. The thought alone made him rush as he made his way over to his wardrobe to pick out something to wear. The colors of his outfit was probably mismatched but he didn't really care all that much because he was too worried about the well-being of his sister. After grabbing his jacket off the rack, he grabbed his keys and phone before he headed out of the apartment, locking the door behind him. He quickly buried the keys inside of his pocket and made his way down the stairs, one hand busy with unlocking the screen of his phone. He looked down at the device while heading downstairs, nearly missing a step but he found his footing quickly.
To: Baby sis Message: Hey, I'm omw to you, don't go anywhere, alright?
River's eyes lingered on the screen, hoping he'd catch the little 'seen' under his text but as he reached the end of the stairs, he knew it would do him no good to get distracted and instead headed out of the apartment complex, setting out for Whitmore. With how many times he'd visited Krista in the past, he knew the road like the back of his hand now. He paid for the taxi ride as usual once the car had come to a stop in front of Whitmore college. He thanked the driver and hopped out of the car, stretching his long limbs that had become cramped since the passenger seat was pushed a little too close to the front. River began heading deeper into Whitmore, having already memorized the way to Krista's dorm. The amount of stairs leading up to her floor left him panting. Each time he visited he was reminded all over again that he was out of shape. His steps were a bit hurried as he reached the door to Krista's dorm. He raised his fist and knocked a few times on the door. "Krista?" He called out from the other end all while keeping up his persistent knocking before stopping for a few moments before he raised his hand up to knock again. "Krista, it's me. Open up." While his words sounded demanding, one could easily detect how worried he was about his sister.

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ THESE LAST COUPLA DAYS WERE THE WORST in Krista’s whole life. Actually, there were probably days a lot worse━like getting abandoned by her parents, the countless days enduring neglect and starvation, etcetera, etcetera, but she couldn’t remember those so well. This was new, and it involved Mal, and it hurt. She hurt.
Releasing the video hadn’t really gone her way. When Krista found it on Mal’s phone and sent it to herself, she gave herself a pat on the back for being so level-headed━for waiting when she usually just flipped out without warning. She figured she was learning to be better. And when she sent it out anonymously later on and it began to circulate, she thought… she just thought it’d embarrass Professor Braschi and Mal, that maybe they’d learn after what they did. Krista didn’t look at the timestamp; she didn’t know it was taken before she met Mal. She just thought he was cheating on her. That’s why she captioned the video Cheating bitch, ‘cause she figured Mal would learn.
Confronting him didn’t make it any better. She’d also had some crazy idea that, like, maybe they’d fire Professor Braschi for what she did, but then Krista looked it up and, well, revenge p*rn was a punishable offence in Virginia, and Mal wasn’t a student, so she didn’t really do anything wrong. Not to anyone but Krista.
After her fight with Mal, she came slinking back to her room, head hanging, and buried herself under her blankets. She just wanted to die. Just crumble up like dust and, like, float away into the freakin’ wind or something. Maybe she shoulda called her psychiatrist.
Instead, Krista prayed.
Dear Lord, please… please forgive me for what I did. I thought it was a good idea. I thought I was gonna get even. I know we’re not supposed to ‘cause, like, um… revenge and stuff is bad, but I really love Mal. And I know you probably don’t love Mal, but I don’t wanna lose him. I kinda hate him right now, but I feel really bad for what I did. And, um, if you… can find a way to make it so I don’t get in trouble at school or with the police or anything, that would be great. Even though I know I should. Also please make sure that Professor Braschi… maybe that she doesn’t lose her job, or that she can find one far away. Like, super far. So that she never sees Mal again. Anyway, thanks. Love you. In God’s name, Amen.
She let out a heavy sigh and shook with it, feeling claustrophobic under her blanket, but also wondering how long she had to stay underneath them before she, like, passed out or somethin’. Was she bein’ dramatic? Probably. This just sucked.
Krista ignored her phone’s buzz, as well as the follow-up reminder buzz a minute later. She laid there for what felt like forever until she heard the knocking, which she also planned to ignore before she heard River’s voice.
Throwing the blanket off herself, Krista stood and dragged her feet to the door, pulling it open just after River spoke again. She didn’t find the strength in her to smile at him, she only took a few steps back ‘til she was turning and sinking down on the edge of her bed. “I guess ya saw it.” She puffed, keeping her head hung in shame. After a moment, she raised her hands and buried her face in her palms. “I can’t believe… I mean, I was just trynna get back at him, y’know? I feel like I do so much and then Mal does nothin’. Sometimes I don’t know if he even likes me, and… and now he hates me for this. And Professor Braschi… ugh, I hate her.” Feeling anger bubble up in her chest again, Krista’s hands slowly curled into tight fists while her teeth clenched.
Her head jumped up, eyes flicking to River, fury burning behind them. “I know we’re not supposedta hate people, but I hate her. I want bad stuff t’happen to ‘er. I want… I want…” She burst into tears again, “I just wanted a boyfriend! Why’s everythin’ go so bad all the time?!”

— he has no notion of loving people by halves —
River raised his hand, ready to knock on the door once again but that was when the door opened so his hand hovered awkwardly in the air for a moment or so before he lowered his hand back down again. His expression softened at the sight of his sister. She looked bad and the urge to hug her was there, nagging at him in the back of his mind but he pushed that aside for now as he stepped inside Krista's dorm and gently closed the door after him. He watched as Krista sank at the edge of the bed, looking small and vulnerable which only made River feel bad for her. "Um... Yeah. It was kind of hard not to." Ah, he should probably not talk about hard things right now, huh? He didn't want her to think about that tape again. He approached her slowly, nudging up his pants so he could squat in front of his sister, his eyes focused on his sister who looked like she didn't want to meet his eyes. She buried her face in her hands not long after which only made him sigh softly. He couldn't say anything, knowing it would be better to just let Krista get her feelings out so they wouldn't bubble and erupt later on. He was terrible at comforting others, but he was more than willing to try for Krista, because she was his sister and she meant a lot to him. It made him really sad to see her this way.
His expression only softened some more when he saw the fury in her eyes as she talked about the other person in the video with Krista's boyfriend. He nodded his head in an understanding manner. The way she erupted into tears again made him sigh softly as the urge to reach out grew stronger and stronger. "Hey, hey, breathe, okay?" River finally spoke up when he realized she was getting really worked up. "Look, we all do things when we're upset or feeling betrayed, so I understand why you did this." He wasn't going to side against her and tell her what she'd done was wrong, he had a feeling she already knew that, so there was no reason for him to do that and just drive the blade deeper and deeper into her heart. "I won't tell you that what you'd done was wrong. I have a feeling you already know that, so I won't rub it in." River shook his head gently, reaching out to gently attempt to place his hand on Krista's knee, giving her plenty of room as well as chance to shy away from his touch if she wanted to.
"Look, Krista, I know that I didn't like the idea of the two of you together, but I could see that he made you happy and your happiness is what matters to me and honestly, seeing you like this is breaking my heart." As much as he wanted to keep Krista far, far away from the guy, he couldn't. He couldn't tell her to just move on from him and wait for the right guy. Not when she looked so heartbroken right now. "So my advice is to give him some time. He might be upset right now, but I don't think he hates you. I think it's pretty impossible to hate you, kiddo." River offered her a small smile, his eyes fixed on his sister.
"My next advice is to talk to him. Really talk to him. I think communication is pretty important in relationships. Don't expect him to know what you're feeling or thinking, okay? By doing so, I hope that he'll also start doing the same thing. He doesn't strike me as a guy who's very open about his own feelings either." River pressed his lips together into a thin line for a moment before he parted his lips to let out a soft sigh. "But, before all of that, give yourself some time to heal from this, as well. I know it must've been difficult for you to see that video."

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ RIVER UNDERSTOOD? REALLY? SHE honestly wasn’t expectin’ that. Usually, nobody understood why she did the stuff she did, but Krista had to remember that this was her brother, and he probably knew her better than anyone else. No, not probably━definitely. He was the only one that understood after she ran away, and he’d be the only one to not yell at her now. He probably wouldn’t even say ‘I told you so’ even though she totally deserved it. “Thanks,” Krista mumbled, except she didn’t really “know” she’d done something wrong. She kept trynna justify it, which probably wasn’t good. But still.
Slowly, Krista lifted her eyes to stare over at River as he squatted in front of her. She forced a soft smile when his hand moved to her knee, finding it comforting━way more than when Mal pushed her.
Was it impossible to hate her? She didn’t think so. Lotsa people could. Krista was… hate-able, just like Mal. Hard to get along with, hard to get used to, kinda… broken. She sniffled and shook her head. “No,” Krista mumbled, “He definitely hates me. I told him I loved him and… and he said it was a mistake.” That wasn’t… exactly what happened, but it was pretty darn close to the truth. Krista rubbed her nose on her sleeve and sniffed again.
“He said it wasn’t… that the video was from before we got together. ‘Cause I got these necklaces for his birthday… and he wasn’t wearin’ it in the video.” Slowly, she hooked a finger into the gold chain and pulled it out from underneath her sweater, showing the half-heart to River. It was clearly one side of a ‘Best Friends Forever’ charm, and she didn’t need to show him Mal’s name engraved on the back to demonstrate who had the other side. “But I dunno if I believe him. I didn’t look at the date before I sent it to myself, so who knows.” She puffed sadly. “Just seems like the kinda thing he’d lie about.” Like, literally everything. Mal probs lied about everything.
Heal? She had to wait and then talk to him again? “What if I wait too long and he never wants t’talk to me again?” Maybe he’d never wanted to talk. Maybe Mal just wanted t’do the other stuff and that was it. Ugh. Krista knew she shoulda waited ‘til marriage.
“Y’know… you sound a lot like dad.” Krista smiled sadly with just a hint of amusement as she met River’s eyes again. “Really patient, pastor-y kinda vibes. It’s cool.” She sniffled again, and suddenly that smile disappeared. “Thanks for… comin’ t’see if I was alright. I just… maybe I’ll do what you said. Wait a couple days… weeks? I dunno. I want that stupid lady to lose her stupid job. I don’t care if it was before or after me, I just…” Krista started to get riled up again, trembling from where her fists closed together so tightly that her nails pressed uncomfortably into her palms.
“He ain’t open! About nothin’! And I hate it! I don’t know why I hadta fall in love with the dumbest, stupidest guy in the world, but I did and it freakin’ sucks!” Krista shouted, waving her fists in the air like she didn’t know how to throw a punch. Well, she didn’t, but y’know. She’d probs punch Professor Braschi if she had the chance. “And everyone only wants t’talk about how hot Professor Braschi is and not that she’s a dumb s-word! Maybe even a c-word! But definitely a w-word. Ugh.” She really wished she could say the bad stuff out loud like Mal did. “You didn’t think she was hot, right, River?” Suddenly blubbering sweetly again, Krista trained her glassy hazel eyes on her big brother and hoped he’d give her the truth.
