Ray rolled down the window of the pickup, the grim look on his face already telling Chris everything he needed to know. The man cleared his throat, shaking his head as he propped an elbow on the window frame. ”I’ve tried every bar in ten miles, no sign of the guy. You want me to keep checking?”
The wolf had bolted from the cage sometime after their last conversation, somehow breaking through the layers of deterrents they had keeping him there. Chris knew there was someone else involved, someone who certainly wasn’t a part of his team. He should’ve had the place wired, but no amount of lamenting that was going to put Robert Webber back in the cage.
Chris sighed and shook his head. His jaw was tight as he started to step back from the truck. Just because his own life was empty outside of the job these days didn’t mean everybody’s had to be. ”Not tonight. I think he’s figured that’s where I’d start looking for him. The man’s a drunk, he’ll turn up somewhere soon.” Hopefully not standing over the body of another person he’d killed, or on a slab in the morgue, having finally managed what he had already threatened to do. The chances of either one were too high for his liking. ”Head home. We’ll start fresh tomorrow.” He raised a hand, the gesture mirrored by the other man as he rolled up the window and pulled away from the curb.
In a quiet neighbourhood like this most folks would’ve been shocked at what was being talked about. Mystic Falls might’ve had a murder rate to rival a city a hundred times the size of this sleepy little town, but most people here were still living normal little lives, unaware of the things that went bump in the night here. Unaware that the nice family next door - the man raising his daughter alone - had been shattered by death, twice, before a miracle had happened.
These days the miracle was rarely home. Chris sighed and started back towards the house. Allison hadn’t been home when he’d left earlier to take an evening stroll - AKA a sweep of this part of the town on foot - as she wan’t most evenings. His daughter had come home after Henrik Mikaelson had brought her out of her coma, but it wasn’t exactly home anymore, it was a place for them to exist apart. At some point the bridge was going to have to be rebuilt between them - before tragedy came again - Chris just wasn’t sure how to put those first few pieces down.
The sight of Allison’s card in the driveway, pulled up beside his truck, had his pace slowing. It was rare that their paths crossed in the house, and when they did it felt as though that wall was still up between the two of them. Was he going to have to beat his fists bloody against it to break it down?
Already feeling an ache in his fist, and in his chest, Chris slipped into the house. He tossed his keys onto the table by the door, hung his coat up, straining to hear movement in the house. Eyes on the ceiling, he called out. ”Allison?” There was a chance she wouldn’t answer, shutting herself off in her room, acting like he didn’t exist. If she did … that was a bonus. Frowning faintly, Chris headed for the kitchen. Dinner would be a start, even if it did end up with him eating alone, again.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ SINCE THE NEAR END OF her junior year, Allison Argent decided in that moment to get her life back in order. She was confident speaking to her friends once more, repairing the odd relationships she had left scattered and even managed to repair her relationship with her ex boyfriend - getting back together with him. It had been a long spell of confusion, and a long line for recovery but Allison had managed to repair most of her friendships and relationships...All except..the relationship with her dad.
Since coming back to life, the older Argent had kept a closer eye on Allison, which was expected considering she had died, and was resurrected for the purpose of causing havoc. But the stretch or more so the gap in their relationship only grew the more Chris tried to keep Allison out of hunter business or overall hunter duties. Even when Allison wasn't talking to her friends, or being a general part of Scott's pack, she kept up with her physical maintenance, shooting arrows whenever she had the chance. It ended up becoming her stress reliever, especially when she needed it 99% of the time.
But since moving to Mystic Falls, Allison rarely saw her father. There were moments the two would bump into one another in the apartment, but Allison kept it moving - blaming her studying habits for the lack of communication. That and the thought of even speaking just felt..Awkward. So Allison simply made it her priority to..never be around the same time he was. She couldn't deal with the confrontation of it all, knowing that her pent up frustration would eventually get the best of her - her curiosity as to why he would keep her at arms length when it came to what he was doing, and what he was trying to 'protect' her from. Though, it wasn't easy to avoid him all the time.
This night in particular, Allison had driven home, coming back from Nate's place. She spent most of her weekends with him and his younger sister - finding healthier ways to relax outside of classes. That and she of course enjoyed the company her boyfriend bought. Nate had offered for Allison to spend the night with him, but considering the plans she had for the next day, it was best for her to return home. Nate understood of course. What the Argent didn't anticipate was that her dad would be coming home also.
She was in the kitchen for a moment, making coffee for herself, despite knowing no matter how much caffeine she had in that hour, she would somehow end up falling asleep anyway. Taking a peek outside through the curtain, Allison watched as Chris was walking up towards the house, slowing his pace once he noticed her car in the driveway. He seemed to be startled or confused, but it didn't matter to the Argent in that moment, as she was now scrambling to get out of the kitchen and up the stairs as quickly and quietly as she could. Quietly fumbling with the creamer and syrups to add to her coffee, the younger hunter remained quiet and headed up the stairs just before the door fully opened and her dad walked in.
As she heard her name being called, the Argent considered pretending she was asleep to avoid whatever confrontation the two needed to face. But deciding against it, Allison placed her coffee down and returned downstairs quietly, leaning against the archway that connected their living room and kitchen. "What did you find this time?" She asked, finally revealing herself.

Things would never have gotten this bad with Victoria here. No matter what had happened, his wife would’ve ruled the situation with an iron fist. Allison seemed to have hated her parents’ rigidity at times, but it had all been intended to keep her safe. In the end they’d failed with that, and then he’d been left to try and handle it on his own, with Gerard’s interference just making things worse. Chris knew he hadn’t been in the best place when that thing had brought Allison back, some part of him had been hollowed out in the way his daughter’s body had been. Henrik had filled Allison back up, brought back the daughter he’d known, and he’d thought that the hollow inside of him had healed too. Maybe it had, although the tether that had once tied the two of them together seemed to have been permanently severed.
Usually he tracked Allison by the sound of her footsteps in the mostly empty house. There was some sense of relief when he heard them, even if their contact was restricted to just passing one another as one walked in and the other headed out. Allison was home, she was safe. He could’ve stopped on any occasion, blocking her way out to insist on talking. That’s what Victoria would’ve done, but the man he’d been with her had definitely died along with her and Allison.
Now Chris felt that hitch in his step as he started towards the kitchen and found it empty. The scent of coffee was still in the air, like he hadn’t missed her by more than a few seconds. Instead he heard her pad out of her bedroom, coming down instead of hovering at the top of the stairs. Finally they were face to face as he turned even if the kitchen island was between the two of them. No hi dad, how was your day. Like he did with his men, Allison launched straight into business.
Chris ducked his head slightly, turning away to start gathering things out of the fridge without even asking. Asking whether she was staying for dinner would just let her say no. It was better not to give her a way out. ”Nothing,” he said tightly as he set a packet of chicken breasts down on the counter top. ”And that’s the problem.” It was the second thorn in his side, the distance between himself and his daughter the first.
Instead of cutting open the packet, Chris propped his hands against the edge of the counter and looked straight at her. ”I know we haven’t involved you as much as we should … but this is a situation you should be aware of. It’s … dangerous for anybody like us to be out there alone at the moment. Have you heard anything about hunters turning up hurt or dead in the last couple of weeks?” Was it a punch in the gut being asked about what you weren’t supposed to be dipping your toe into? Maybe. Robert Webber was a threat to all hunters though and if he knew anything about his daughter, it was that she wouldn’t be left on the side lines, especially if her friends needed help. Once upon a time he’d have told her to walk away and let Scott and the others handle things themselves, but these days he knew the benefits to the pack and those friendships.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ RAISING A BROW AT HER Dad's choice of ingredients that he pulled from the fridge, Allison considered in that moment to tell her father that she had already ate at Nate's. But given how minimal their usual interaction with one another was, she decided to let it slide - allowing a future stomachache to curse her in the long run. As he responded though, mentioning he couldn't find anything, Allison huffed quietly as she pushed herself off from the side of the archway, allowing herself to avoid eye contact with him just a little longer.
"As much as we should?.." She began, seemingly ignoring her dad's initial question, raising her head to look at him - dead in the eye. "You haven't involved me in anything since I came back. And that was however many years ago." Folding her arms then, Allison then sighed, before answering. "Hurt..yes. Dead..? No." There were minor rumours here and there of injured people - which even led to members in the pack discussing it. The younger Argent didn't know much about it of course, given her wonderful track record of being left on the side for these things. "Is there something I should be aware of?.."

He caught the arch of his daughter’s brow, like she was questioning his automatic shift into dinner mode. Chris ignored it, they’d spent too much time over the last couple of years giving each other space, avoiding the conversations he should’ve been having with her. There’d been a time when he’d kept Allison from it all on purpose, wanting to give her the childhood he’d never had, but that had left her wide open to the dangers lurking in Beacon Hills. From that he should’ve learned his lesson, but he hadn’t. Shielding her again just led to … this.
Chris raised his brows at his daughter, his mouth pursing for a moment as she finally lifted her head to look back at him. With just the two of them left they should have been close, but the gulf still yawed wide in his chest. ”I was trying to give you a choice, to let you finish college, have whatever sort of life you wanted afterwards. Maybe I was wrong to.” He sighed, straightened up to echo her pose with his arms over his chest. ”Our family have been keeping people safe for centuries, maybe for a while we lost our path, but what Marie-Jeanne and Henri started shouldn’t stop.” Mystic Falls was just as much a ‘haven’ for the supernatural as Beacon Hills had been, but that also came with that violent and bloody flip side that saw the innocent hurt.
The guilt he felt over letting the drunk go in the first place weighed heavy as lead in the pit of his stomach. Chris sighed, dropped his hands to start opening the chicken. ”That’s a relief,” he murmured. This wasn’t an admission he wanted to make, but once upon a time he’d sworn not to hide anything more from his daughter. ”Over a year ago I ran into a hunter in town. He’d recently lost his wife, and was hurting enough to maybe cause himself harm. I stopped him.” And that was where he should’ve continued to push. There were facilities he could’ve delivered Webber to, places that would have helped with his drinking. Perhaps if he had then Webber wouldn’t have been turned.
Tugging open the packet, he set the chicken breasts down on the cutting board he grabbed from the cupboard next to the sink. Chris began to slice them into strips with the knife, methodical work that at least partially occupied his mind when it wanted to start spinning out. ”I let him go when he sobered up. The next time I saw him was after a full moon and he’d been turned into a werewolf. He killed a hunter in the woods that night. I locked him up at the warehouse, I thought maybe there was still a chance I could reach him … I was wrong. Somehow he got out, and now he’s free in Mystic Falls again. Do you think the people who were hurt could’ve been attacked by him?” Getting a warning out to Scott and the others would’ve been wise, but this had been his problem to solve. He’d let Webber go the first time, hadn’t done the one thing that would guarantee he could never hurt anybody again the second time. All because he’d seen the echoes of his own life in the man’s misery.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ SNORTING AT HER FATHER'S REPLY, Allison Argent rolled her eyes. Typical response. A father trying to protect his daughter, covering it up as a choice of their own. How classic. Allison was the type that didn't require protection, but instead she wanted honesty. "That choice was taken from me and all of us a long time ago." She muttered, rolling her head slightly to work at the slight ache in her neck. "What they started?" Being hunters and potentially hurting the wrong people? Sounds about right.
Listening to her father's story about the hunter he met a year ago, the younger Argent leaned against the counter a little closer to her father. Her eyes moved down to his hand, watching how he cut the chicken into strips before up again at his facial expressions. "Maybe." She breathed, trying to recall how the injuries looked on those that were attacked. "Some of the injuries looked like bites, others just claws..but I haven't heard anything about any attacks for the last..week or so."
Thinking of how she was going to bring up such a topic to Scott and the rest of her friends despite somewhat..avoiding them for a long while was the next challenge on the Argent's mind.

Mouth pinching at Allison’s eye roll, Chris forced himself not to chide her for it. Allison wasn’t a sulky teenager anymore, in need of a lesson on manners from her parents. She’d been through things no child, nobody ever should have done, and was miraculously here again. That bought her leniency – some at least.
He raked his teeth over his upper lip, using that little sting to push the urge to parent aside. Cracking down again wouldn’t get either of them anywhere. Chris tapped his fingers against his biceps, watching Allison work the tension out of her neck. ”I won’t say that we have full freedom, but we do still have some choice in how we should our legacy. You don’t have to hunt, you didn’t have to stay in school either.” But he’d always made it clear what he’d wanted for his daughter and Chris didn’t imagine that all of that had been wiped from Allison’s memory when she’d come back.
”Protecting those who could not protect themselves.” Chris knew that Allison didn’t need that reminder, but the edge to her choice of words had him bristling. There was no way to deny that some members of the family had taken it too far, using the privilege their name gave them to commit atrocities. No amount of right after all that wrong would erase everything that had been done. He was trying though.
Robert Webber had been one of those attempts to change the karmic balance and, unlike the feral wolf he’d found out in the woods, he had failed. That failure sat like lead in the pit of Chris’ stomach as he started to slice the chicken for dinner. His shoulders were tight, each movement excessively precise. Using the blade, he scooped up the pieces to place them into the pan as he reeled off his story. Eyes softer than they had been only moments before, he looked up at Allison as she said maybe. That was more promising than he’d expected, but brought him no satisfaction. ”So, it’s still a possibility,” he said with a sigh.
Setting down the knife, Chris paused in his preparations. He curled his fingers over the edge of the counter, propping himself up as he stared down at the blade. ”I might be able to get into the morgue, take a look for myself.” His gaze came up, an unspoken invitation in the look he shot Allison. ”If the attacks line up with the full moon, then there’s a decent chance it was Webber out there. Do you want to be involved with this, Allison?” He wasn’t about to drag her in against her will, but if there was one thing that had always seemed to erase the distance between the two of them, it was the chance to use the family business to change things for the better.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ SURPRISED THAT HER DAD DIDN'T call her out on her expression and reactions, Allison continued to lean against the counter, carefully watching how his expressions and actions changed. As he began, muttering about the Argent legacy yet againand the privilege of going to school, Allison sighed. "I stayed in school because of Mom..we know this." She initially mumbled.
Despite being dead for a few years and then seemingly coming back to life after a demon had used her body, Allison remembered a lot of things that her mother wished out of her. Even if it was through tough love. "Thanks for the reminder." She dryly mumbled. Except her father had left out a crucial detail. People that wanted to protect others sometimes took a step too far, harming others that weren't even involved. Something her aunt had done once upon a time. Watching her father's reaction to her answer, the younger Argent looked away for a moment. "Unfortunately."
As the knife settled on the counter, Allison's eyes looked down and back up to her fathers. Dinner was surely going to be delayed. Whether it was due to a pending argument between the two of them, or just his thoughts. Thankfully, it was the latter. "The morgue?" She questioned, eyes trailing up to meet her fathers, her lips breaking into a small smile as she took the hint of invitation.
"Last I checked the morgue..isn't public access." Allison was sure her father preferred to be by the book for most things but...sometimes the younger Argent knew he was willing to risk a few things here and there. "I've dealt with a full moon before..I dated Scott remember?" And Isaac...And now Nate - who was a Chimera but it didn't matter. "But yes. I'm in."

Chris grunted in acknowledgement of Allison’s reasoning, his lips pressing together, thinning until they were almost bloodless. He and Victoria had wanted to have Allison to have a childhood untouched by the murkiness her parents had to deal with – there would always be time to bring her in on the family’s secret later and give her a choice. That had been snatched away for too long and even now that ate at him. ”It was still a choice and there’s time for you to make another.” One that would mean she didn’t follow entirely in his footsteps, one that might keep her safer.
Pale eyes narrowed, his gaze flicking up to Allison. It felt as though they always circled back this way, any hint of a conversation between the two of them breaking down eventually into an argument. When Victoria had been alive they had managed to live balanced on that knife edge, his wife in the middle, he and Allison on either side. Then that balance was gone and they were left with that hollow inside and those splintered edges that cut at one another.
He could have left Allison out of this hunt – one that would bring echoes of her own experiences to her in the form of a deceased wife and a husband who had been broken by it. Chris gritted teeth as he shook the pan to distribute the chicken he’d just heaped into it. That hadn’t been what he’d wanted to hear. ”You heard about these injuries on campus?” he asked, trying not to pry like he was digging a bullet out of his daughter with the knife in his hand. He had never been a subtle man when it came to parenting, but for the sake of what remained of his relationship with his daughter he had to try.
The more he considered the werewolf’s possible connection with the cases his daughter had heard about it, the more disconcerted he became. Tension stiffened Chris’ shoulders, leaving his feeling brittle as he bet Allison’s eyes. The corners of his mouth twitched faintly, returning a smile he hadn’t expected from her. ”Have you ever known that to stop me?” In Beacon Hills it had been a different matter, the sheriff’s department had made use of their connection to the Argents over the years and a government ID had helped grease the wheels. Stilinski had made the trip here just the same as he had, but he was no longer Sheriff Stilinski. He’d been forced to forge new alliances with Sheriff Forbes and her people instead, slowly starting to make himself invaluable to the woman. ”Don’t remind me,” Chris drawled, a thin thread of humour remaining in his voice. There’d been a cost to who his daughter had fallen in love with, but there had also been a positive side to it. ”You don’t want to deal with this particular wolf on the full moon. He’s been a problem from the start, one that I should have dealt with.” Sympathy had blinded him until it was too late. A man had died, the werewolf had escaped the cage and now it was on his shoulders – and Allison’s - to make sure that nobody was hurt by this.
Nodding slowly, Chris reached out to finally stir the chicken. He looked up at Allison, his expression already settling into that flat work mode. ”How about after dinner we put together a plan? Head to the morgue tomorrow if you’re free, start setting out new search grids if looks like these are wolf attacks.” Father and daughter working together again, something he never believed he would see.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ FEELING FRUSTRATION RISE AS HER father diminished her reasoning for staying in school as a simple option, Allison knew if she were to argue the case, they would be going back and forth all night. "Make another?" She questioned, a brow raising. "You mean, finally asking if I want out? Of school? It's too late for that." Crossing the kitchen to open the fridge for water, the younger Argent then reached for a glass in the cupboard, pouring herself one while noticing the change in her father's behaviour.
"On campus?" She parroted. Allison had been aware of the attacks around town, but campus came as a surprise. Despite there being vampires, werewolves, chimeras and all sorts of supernatural wandering around there. Allison couldn't say she was surprised from the fact, but at the same time, it felt like her dad was hiding something. Though as he smiled, questioning if places not being public access has stopped him before, Allison's grin returned. "Never, but..surely you don't have the same friendship with Sheriff Forbes like Stiles' dad."
Rolling her eyes at her father's next response, Allison let out a quiet chuckle as she put the bottle of water back and her now empty glass in the sink. It had been a long while since she and Scott had dated, let alone last kissed. She felt her dad's..likability scale for Nate matched Scott's but this time around she didn't really care for it. "So..you had it but let it go?" She questioned, turning back to look at him. It was surprising to hear such a thing, considering how hard-headed he was.
Nodding in agreement at the plan after dinner and for tomorrow, the younger Argent then reached out for some plates, allowing him to plate up whenever the chicken was ready. "Sounds fine by me." It felt..weird agreeing. Especially since the two of them rarely did such a thing for the last year or so. "What about floor plans for the morgue? Might be things hiding underneath it all. Not to be..cartoonish but could be a lair of some sorts."

Right at the core of it, this was the reason things were always so tense between him and Allison. They were too alike, both stubborn, both quick to grow frustrated with one another. Victoria had always been the voice of reason between the two of them, tough enough to help hold the line when they couldn’t cave on a point, but soft enough when Allison needed her to be. Chris gritted his teeth, trying not to let his frustration spill out in words he couldn’t take back. ”It’s never too late,” he said as calmly as he could manage. ”Do I still want you to get an education and have options for a life that doesn’t solely revolve around being an Argent? Yes. Do I want you to be able to choose whether to carry on fighting for people who can’t? Yes. This is all about not telling you what has to be now.” He might have looked as though he were a man who couldn’t learn from his mistakes, but he was trying to be better than that.
Chris winged a brow at his daughter as he gave the pan another stir. ”There’s been at least one body found there in the last couple of years – that one by me.” That was when he’d stumbled over the sketchy looking shapeshifter who’d ended up helping him to try and track the thing that had done it. Atlas had helped him again after that too. ”A professor was attacked there too. Rumour said that he was killed, but he’s back there teaching.” He glanced at his daughter, he knew he didn’t have to point out that death wasn’t always final to her. ”Things are different with her, but there’s still enough trust that I think she’ll be willing to help … if I need her to.” He’d spent enough time working around the edges of law enforcement in town that maybe he wouldn’t need her to this time.
A faint smile touched Chris’ lips as he heard his daughter chuckle. It was a sound he hadn’t heard anywhere near enough lately. The smile didn’t last long though, Allison’s question had his expression sobering and regret flooding back in hard enough that his posture stiffened almost defensively. ”There was no let about it,” he said almost sharply. ”The first time I thought he was just drunk, I knocked him out, let him sober up enough that he wasn’t a danger to himself or anybody else. I was wrong. He killed a man afterwards … a hunter. I found him with blood on his hands. He was locked up at the warehouse while I decided what to do with him.” And while he tried to decide if his story about not knowing how he became a wolf was bullshit. Chris’ mouth pinched, his gut knotting too. ”I went there one morning and he was gone. None of our people would’ve let him out. That meant someone else did.” The girlfriend that he’d sworn had disappeared on him was most likely. There was still no trace of the woman though, or of the wolf.
As though they were falling back into an old pattern – one that felt comfortable for once – Allison was setting the table for the dinner that was almost ready. Chris reached for the sauce, stirring it through the meat. He nodded at her agreement and then the flat expression was cracking for just a moment more. ”Already up in my office. I’ve been gathering maps and plans of the town since we got here.” He hadn’t thought about something being under the morgue though. Given the age of the town that shouldn’t have been a surprise. ”Are you thinking about ghouls, maybe the Dread Doctors?” Frustratingly there’d been no sign of them either. The search had dragged on for a couple of years now with people continuing to disappear and reappear changed – longer than they’d seemed to stay anyway in the last couple of decades.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ KNOWING SHE WAS MORE LIKE her father than her mother was enough to simply ruin Allison Argent's day. It wasn't that she hated her father, but they rarely saw eye-to-eye with things, which was evident across each of her boyfriends and even the plans she spent with friends. He always worried, overly worried, trying to pull the same kind of sympathy he said he had for his sister, her aunt Kate.
Allison saw right through it most times, knowing it was just his paranoia kicking in, but with her passing away once, and her body being used for the purpose of a demon, she understood more now compared to before. "It is too late." She argued, standing her ground. "It's too late because I'm already half-way through, almost at the finish line for God's sake!" The more her dad spoke about wanting to give her the option of choice only resulted in Allison going a little quiet.
For those few moments of silence between the two of them, with the only noise coming from the stirring of the pan and the quiet sizzle of the chicken as it was being cooked, Allison avoided her father's gaze. She simply waited for him to talk and talk he did. As he mentioned about the body that was found, the younger Argent nodded. "Then that has to be another shapeshifter. No?" Shapeshifters were clever in that aspect, using or replicating bodies of dead people in order to continue their lives. Allison couldn't remember much of the other details about Shapeshifters, if they knew most or all about the life of the person they were 'controlling', but those were details that were easy to find.
Knowing her father would be offended by her choice of words, Allison somehow felt a faint smile appear on her lips as his tone and attitude changed. No one loved admitting that they were too weak, close to death or had to let a culprit go, but the guilt that came along with it was no fun either. "I see.." Allison mumbled. Considering how many of her own friends were werewolves, Allison held the thought within her that it wasn't all werewolves that were the problem. Just a small..a very small percentage.
Nodding as Chris mentioned he already had maps and plans of the town, Allison continued setting the table, finishing within a few minutes. "No..The Dread Doctors were scattered all over Mystic Falls. They had a few 'lairs' here and there but never a stable singular location."
At least that was what she recalled the details from the people who were captured - those who could remember some of the details here and there. "So when do we head out?" She asked, standing tall with a grin on her lips.

Guilt had started to eat away at him long before Allison had died. There were so many ways he’d failed his daughter and only a few in which he’d been able to make any of it up to her since that thing had brought Allison back. It hadn’t been as simple as brushing away everything that had happened before, too much had happened for that. They’d fallen straight back into their usual routine, butting heads, every conversation ending up right back where they were now.
If he’d settled the family down years before they’d finally come home to Beacon Hills, Allison might already have graduated. She’d had to repeat a year because they were always on the move, then the added time she’d spent … Chris swallowed hard, trying not to let his mind slide back to just what his daughter had suffered through before she’d been brought back. ”Whatever happens from here on out is your decision,” he said quietly. He couldn’t turn the clock back, although if anybody had handed him that possibility in the last few years he might just have taken the opportunity.
Silence had drifted through the kitchen then, tense, but not to the point where it snapped and one of them stormed out. Chris continued to cook, focusing his attention on the pan instead of his daughter as the tension bled away enough for them to discuss what they did have left in common – hunting.
Shaking his head, Chris cut off her train of thought over the professor perhaps being a shapeshifter. ”No,” he said quietly. ”I tested him. He might have … come back as you did. This town isn’t exactly known for people staying dead.” The words felt like barbed wire as he pulled them from his throat. It wasn’t as though there was any test he could perform to see if someone had been brought back from the dead. As far as the town was concerned, Professor Damaxca had just taken a few months off of work after an incident, but he’d seen the records at the church, there’d been a funeral, and a burial.
Discomfort swelled in his gut, radiating up into his chest. What had happened with the wolf hadn’t sat well with him for the start. Chris darted a look Allison’s way at her mumble, but sighed and carried on with the story. There was no guarantee she would cross paths with the wolf, but at least if she did now, she’d know not to show him the same sympathy. ”I know you’re careful … but take no chances with shifters you don’t know,” he warned lightly. The rest of the threats in this town seemed obvious enough these days and from bitter experience, Allison knew to go into a fight with caution.
The Dread Doctors had been the biggest for a time, but barring the people still disappearing and reappearing in town, their threat level seemed to have been fading. Chris’ brows rose as he looked back up at Allison. ”You’ve found their lairs?” he asked, his voice hoarse. Even an abandoned space had a chance of giving them some breadcrumbs to follow back to the source.
He’d planned on being cautious himself, but hearing Allison’s question, Chris returned Allison’s smile. Maybe things weren’t too badly broken to be put back together between them again. ”How about after dinner? If you haven’t got somewhere else to be.” Maybe he was jumping the gun, but he wanted to move on this while his daughter was willing to work with him.

━ as the hours pass, i will let you know ━ THERE WAS NEVER A SHADOW of guilt from Allison Argent when it came to anything regarding her father. Before she died the first time, she felt some kind of guilt then though, knowing that the last time the two spoke to one another there was still tension between them. But here they were, years later, and things felt exactly the same. As if she had never died in the first place. Not expecting her fathers words, Allison's eyes widened a little before settling.
Quietly, the younger Argent mumbled a thank you, before making sure to look away - just as her cheeks flushed a little red from embarrassment. The only sounds that filled the air in those quiet moments was the sound of oil crackling away in the pan while her father continued to cook. She couldn't remember much about his cooking skills, especially since they spent more time apart from one another, instead of enjoying themselves and having a family meal. But food always had a positive effect on the younger Argent, even if there was tension too.
Nodding at her fathers observation, Allison let the assumption go. If Chris Argent was sure of something, there was no point in even arguing with him. Even when it came to the decisions of his daughter. "I came back because of a witch...not many witches are pulling favours like that left right and center.." What Henrik Mikaelson had done for her was a debt she would never be able to pay back, no matter how many thank yous she could present to him or how many offers she could fulfill for him. She wasn't meant to be alive. That was the reality of it all.
"Fine" She muttered quietly, knowing that she was never going to get out of a 'worried' case from her father, especially when it came to shifters or any form of supernatural at that point. Of course, he had his reasons, especially with what the two of them and the overall Argent family had to go through for years on end, but still, Allison knew within herself that she could do it. And she could most definitely do it alone.
"Yeah?.." She began, noticing his change in tone. "It wasn't exactly hard to not do so. But as I said a lot of the lairs I found were cleared out already.." Allison swallowed, knowing that the vital piece of information she was holding back would've been useful and so the younger Argent swallowed her pride. "A..new werewolf joined Scott's pack..He was a Chimera..but got attacked and Scott saved him...He was...trapped. With the Dread Doctors..for almost a decade or something." Allison paused then, looking up at her father now. "One of the Romero kids. Jasper Romero."
At his suggestion of getting started after dinner, Allison couldn't help but grin. She didn't have any immediate plans aside from potentially meeting up with Nate that night, but she was sure Nate would understand if the circumstances changed. He was one for Allison to improve her relationship with her father after all. "Sounds like a plan." She agreed with a wider grin.

A part of him had wanted to take his daughter as far away from here as they could go after the warlock had brought her back to them. All he’d ever wanted to do was keep her safe and he’d failed to do that in Beacon Hills. Chris had been determined not to let it happen again in Mystic Falls, but Allison was an adult now. He couldn’t lock her up or even keep her wrapped up in cotton wool. Trying in a way had pushed them apart again. It was gonna take work to change the bone deep need to do that, but given that the alternative was losing her meant that he’d done it.
Chris saw the colour rise in Allison’s cheeks and let it go without a word. Another of the worst Argent traits, keeping their emotions locked down. You couldn’t let the things you hunt see any weakness, but that didn’t mean you had to hide it from those you loved. It was easier to focus on the food, turning the chicken as he saw colour starting to rise up around its sides.
”Witches aren’t the only way to come back,” he reminded her. If they were then hunters probably would’ve wiped them out long ago, or something worse would’ve come for them. Messing with the natural order painted a target on your back, even if you hadn’t been the one to meddle in the first place. ”The ones that are doing it probably don’t advertise either. I don’t think we’ll be able to pinpoint who brought him back.” Especially since whoever it was had likely sworn the lecturer to secrecy. Being a Mikaelson meant that Henrik was probably untouchable, but Chris would’ve laid money on that not being the same for everybody.
In Beacon Hills he’d tried to make Allison see the danger in the supernatural world. Pushing her to open her eyes to it instead of trusting Scott on sight had almost driven her away. Chris glanced at her as she agreed to not take changes with them now, his mouth thinning into a line before he nodded. This wasn’t home, there was more here to worry about than there had been there. That made dragging Allison back into it far harder.
Feeling that little burst of hope at the idea that they might finally have a trail on the Dread Doctors, Chris let out a long breath. He wouldn’t want Allison pursuing them now, but it gave him a start. ”I’ve been looking since they arrived in town and I hadn’t found anything concrete. You need to show me where they are.” Maybe it would come to nothing, maybe it would be what they finally needed. He’d spoken to some of the Chimeras, none of them had been able to give him more than a brief description of the Dread Doctors, some had been too terrified to provide any information at all. Blue eyes narrowing, Chris met Allison’s gaze. ”I need to speak to him too. If he knows something that could help, he needs to tell us.” Of course, there was a chance that Scott already knew everything he had to say about it all.
With things looking more promising than they had in months, Chris actually found himself smiling at his daughter. He lifted his chin towards the cupboards as he headed for the fridge to put together a quick salad. ”Set the table. We’ll eat in a couple of minutes and then we get to work.” Things might still have been awkward between the two of them, but for tonight at least they’d be a family again and that was something he’d thought might never happen. Feeling lighter than he had since he’d lost Allison, Chris started to put the finishing touches on dinner.
