Perhaps it would have been easier if he stayed dead on that battlefield, listed as one of the men who perished for their religion; that way he wouldn’t have faced years of conflict. The word of God was drummed into him from the moment he was born but he broke a sacred rule shortly after he turned when he drained Sabrina. His belief in God was strong, but the urge to kill was even stronger. Iain found himself in a vicious cycle of killing people, feeling remorse and begging for forgiveness to then do it all again. It was easier to turn his back on God once Fiona died. It was God’s way of punishing him or even Fiona. She hadn’t exactly been an angel before they met and she was the one who was against teaching the children at the orphanage about God. After she died everything fell apart. The children cried about her death and Iain struggled to offer them words of comfort by telling them she was in a better place now because he wasn’t sure such a place existed for vampires. They were doomed to burn. So if he was destined for hell there was no point trying to be good. He embraced his darker side when he ripped into the witches who cursed Fiona and there wasn’t a trace of regret. There was something out there though. A place where the dead could find peace. He prayed Fiona had found that place to stand alongside his first wife and his parents. Just because he didn’t agree with the words coming from the priest's mouth didn’t stop him from attending church every now and then. It made him feel closer to the ones he’d lost. He would light a candle, throw a few angry words to the man upstairs and bid farewell. There was worry in the back of his mind that Rose would be next. Another woman in his life to be snatched from him. Iain sat at the back of the church during the service. He didn’t want to sit next to some old lady telling him how great it was to see young people in the church. It was the same speech he’d heard a thousand times before from the priest. Empty words. He lingered in his seat a little longer as people were filtering out to leave, making idly chit-chat with one another. Iain slowly pulled himself away from the pew, heading towards the exit. His left hand reached out, dipping his fingers into the holy water. He hadn’t bothered getting up for the bread or wine. As soon as his fingers submerged into the water he felt the burn. Instantly he snatched his hand back, biting down on his tongue to stop him from yelling out. He stepped aside, trying to hide his blistering hand in the inside of his jacket. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ EVEN THOUGH KRISTA WAS super busy with her super hot vampire boyfriend most days (and… y’know, school and everything else), she still made time to talk to God. She prayed every night and attended the Church’s Sunday service, where she sat on the uncomfortable wooden pews and tried really hard to pay attention. It was difficult to not let her mind stray, but Krista always attempted to make sure it didn’t stray into anything… bad.
Most times, her brain was always like, Mal, Mal, Mal, School, River, Mal, Kitty, Mal, Mal… which wasn’t so bad. She always turned her phone off just in case, and even though everyone knew she was at Church, she always got a little sad when she turned it back on and nobody texted her. Most times, River came with, but today he was busy, and she trusted that he’d do his own praying━he wasn’t the problem child, after all.
Why hadn’t anybody texted her? Krista got a little buzz in her belly while she waited for the screen to load, staring at that apple-with-a-chunk-taken-outta-it until the time, date, and lock screen appeared. She waited a few more seconds, wondering if the texts just needed time to come in, but the frown was already pulling at her features. Nobody texted. Nobody called. Nobody… namely Mal. What was he doing? Why couldn’t he text her? It was Sunday, wasn’t like he was at work or anything. Even after everything she’d done for his birthday…
Krista breathed slowly and said a quick prayer (mentally) while everybody began to file out of the building. Dear Lord, please… um, please help me calm down and not always jump to the worst-case scenario. I know you probably don’t like Mal but I do, obviously, and I don’t wanna be weird. Actually, I don’t wanna be weird with anyone. Um… I kinda figure all my friends don’t hate me but if you could help me remind myself, that would be great. Thanks. Oh, uh, and I love you. Okay, bye! In God’s Name, Amen. She did a little nod to herself like she was satisfied, then forced a smile at the blank screen before tucking it in her pocket.
Standing, Krista rushed towards the door, coming up with the idea that perhaps it was better to go see Mal herself! Yeah, maybe that’s what he was waiting for, ‘cause they already had some kinda routine (she showed up at his motel and hung out if he wasn’t there). That was totally the best idea, ‘cause then she wouldn’t feel sucky and she’d get to see him while she was still in Mystic Falls. If she was lucky, maybe he’d drive her back to school!
Heading out with a newfound pep in her step, Krista nearly missed the whole thing of the guy burning himself with Holy water. It made her really nervous for a sec, ‘cause, like, what kinda freakin’ demonic omen was that… but then she saw his hand starting to heal. He tried to hide it, but Krista totally saw it! And hyper-focused on that alone, because it was better than dissecting why Holy water hurt vampires (she was assuming he was one).
“Good thing ya got that magic vamp-healin’, huh?” Krista giggled, barely lowering her voice and getting real close to the stranger━probably a lot closer than she shoulda. “Don’t worry, ‘m not gonna tell anyone.” She finally started to at least stage whisper. “I’m a sympathizer.” Krista bent her neck to show off one of her most recent bites as if it was a dog collar with the information for her owner. Straightening up again, those hazel eyes twinkled at the man, a beaming smile on her lips. “I’m Krista! Good t’know at least some of you still go to Church. My boyfriend’s not really the type. Kinda annoyin’. I think if I was a vampire, I wouldn’t lose faith no matter what…” She started to chatter on with no end in sight, immediately thinking they were friends ‘cause they had something in common… kinda.

It was natural for a child to question their religion after their mom died. Iain asked all those uncomfortable questions, throwing them like knives towards his dad. He assured his son that God had his reasons (he never explained those reasons) and that Iain should focus on his praying. He should be praying for his mom’s soul. Maybe his dad’s mind was infiltrated with the same thoughts too, asking himself why his wife died. It didn’t stop either of them from storming into war in the name of God though. Their bloodline was rendered extinct after that. He didn’t shuffle out of his seat to receive the body of Christ or step up to have a sip of the blood of Christ that was always cheap red wine that left an awful taste on his tongue. Maybe God was watching as he dipped his hand into the holy water. A harsh reminder that he was omniscient, with no shadows left to hide in. However, it was likely the humans had weirdly pumped the liquid full of vervain. His guard always shot up when he was met with someone who had knowledge of vervain but there was no one in the Church watching from afar. Waiting for him to submerge his hand into the water, but there was someone a lot closer watching him. A young blonde. His eyes darted over to her as she mentioned ‘vamp-healing’. Iain let out a weak laugh, “Na idea what ye'r on aboot lass.” He quickly dismissed the girl, shoving his hands deep into his jean pockets. He was ready to walk off when she spoke again, promising to keep his secret. He turned back to face her, as she carried on talking, flashing the bite marks on her neck. Iain frowned deeply, edging forward slightly to make sure they were in fact teeth marks and not just some weird schoolgirl thing where they pretend they’ve been bitten. He grabbed her lightly by the wrist, pulling her out of the church and away from anyone else before letting go of Krista. He just about caught some of her rambles. Something about a boyfriend not going to church and she would never lose faith. “Yer boyfriend is a vampire?” He let out a low whistle, “Of course he ain’t gonna come tae church. We’re nae welcome ‘ere… we’re heathens…” Some would say a vampire would burn alive if they entered a church. “Fair enough havin’ a vampire boyfriend ‘n’ still comin’ tae church.” He stood back from the girl for a moment, his eyes still flickering back to that bite mark on her neck that was now slightly hidden, “Nae sure God would agree with that bite mark.” He nodded towards her neck, letting out a quiet chuckle. ━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA WASN’T REALLY DETERRED WHEN THE man━vampire━started walking away. She didn’t understand that he probably didn’t want to talk, so she kept going, assuming he’d stop denyin’ his vampirism when he heard more of what she was gonna say. And he did! She assumed showing off her bite marks only added to her proof She was one of the good ones, a cool human, one that could be accepted by vampires. In a moment, he would see that, too.
Uh, hopefully he’d stop being so grabby and annoying, though. Krista frowned as he dragged her outside, the ‘vampire boyfriend’ factoid about to become a threat, just on the tip of her tongue. She didn’t wanna get pulled anywhere with this guy; she wasn’t a freakin’ shared piece of meat. Also, like, nobody was listening. Why was he so paranoid?
Not considering that she was a little too loud and discussing The Big Secret around common folk was a giant no-no, Krista totally blamed the new guy. They weren’t strangers anymore, not if they were in the same group (Christian vampires and vampire sympathizers), but he didn’t tell her his name! And he had a funny accent. Did all vampires come from the United Kingdom?
Krista yanked her hand back somewhat dramatically and, though he hadn’t hurt her, she cradled it in the opposite palm. “Don’t say that.” Her defence came out as a whisper, sandy brows furrowed at the man. They weren’t heathens, that wasn’t right. Krista… well, she was in denial, but she was sure God had a place for vampires, too. Or maybe just for Mal.
‘Fair enough havin’ a vampire boyfriend ‘n’ still comin’ tae Church.’
If at all possible, her brows furrowed harder. She was gonna get a headache… or send her eyebrows right into the middle of her head and give herself a unibrow. Like her dad usedta say, ‘the winds gonna change and your face is gonna get stuck like that.’ Krista always believed him━it was what had her relaxing her expression finally, though her nose still crinkled in distaste. “What’s that supposedta mean?” She asked accusingly, though her question was answered shortly.
He didn’t think God would approve of her relationship with Mal. “First of all, I don’t really think that’s any of your business.” But she’d sorta shoved it in his face… whatever! Far be it for her to expect someone would be nice in Church of all places, gosh! “Also, you can’t speak for God. You say all vampires are heathens, but you still come to Church, so I dunno how you think you’re not welcome here.” She narrowed her eyes, not faltering in her opinion even after the Holy Water fiasco.
“I don’t remember a verse in the Bible where it says you can’t be in a relationship with a vampire, especially if that vampire follows Christian values.” Mal… didn’t seem to, but that didn’t matter to Krista. She still had faith she could convert him━maybe encourage a little attitude adjustment. It didn’t matter that he’d been around for over two hundred years, people got Saved every day!
“Why do you come here, then? If you’ve got such firm beliefs ‘bout what vampires can and can’t do.” Crossing her arms over her chest, Krista tipped her chin up and faced the man head-on without an ounce of fear (yet)━being with Mal so long had really desensitized her.

The blonde lass was living in some make-believe land where she thought God loved all vampires and once they died they would go straight up to heaven. First class ticket to the clouds. Iain didn’t want to tear her down. That wasn’t the right thing to do, but she needed to be educated right? If she was going to let her vampire lover suck on her blood then surely she needed to know that wasn’t welcome by the church. He frowned a little as she tore her hand back, “I’m sorry lass…” He stepped back a fraction, “Vampires murder folk... That's a sin.” She could stand there and spout off whatever lies her boyfriend told her, professing he was one of the good guys who didn’t kill anyone, but every vampire has killed at least one person. That was enough to have your religion renounced. Iain clung to his until Fiona passed, despite the number of people he accidentally killed. “Tis just that... Y'know…” He didn’t want to stand there and spell it out to her in black and white, but it seemed like Krista was completely clueless. Maybe that vampire boyfriend had gotten into her mind, compelling her to believe vampires and religion go hand in hand. Their conversation escalated, leaving Iain with the burning desire to just back out of the church and leave Krista to it. It was none of his business, yet he found himself getting frustrated with the girl for being so bloody oblivious to everything. “Of course I’m nae welcome ‘ere… I’ve killed folk. Aye, I cannae speak for God but I’m sure he isn’t a huge fan of us.” Nor her boyfriend, but he thought it was best to leave that piece out of the conversation given Krista was already getting riled up enough as it was. Iain did a good job of suppressing his disbelief when she continued rambling on that the Bible didn’t mention vampires and her boyfriend followed those beliefs written in said Bible. “Vampires weren’t around back then.” He stated bluntly. If they were, he was fairly certain there would have been some story about them, describing them as monsters who feed on the living. “Yer boyfriend religious then? Because a minute ago ye said he wasn’t the type.” He doubted it otherwise the man would have been standing alongside Krista, defending himself as well. He sighed heavily, glancing away from the girl for a moment before returning his gaze to her. “I came tae pray for mah wives… The marriages were centuries apart before ye bring up bigamy… I pray they’re at peace wherever their souls may have ended up… just because I’ve turned mah back on God doesn’t mean I cannae pray for mah loved one.” Sabrina deserved peace, but he knew there was a chance Fiona never found it. “I’m Iain.” It was rather pointless introducing himself considering he was going to wipe the conversation clean from her head afterwards. ━ i can't get you out of my head ━ ‘VAMPIRES MURDER FOLK,’ SURE, BUT NOT HER MAL. He would never! He was good, and perfect, and they were totally goin’ to Heaven together. Uh-huh. Krista refused to believe otherwise, and she would not be convinced by some frickin’ stranger. Not welcome but he came anyway? Ha! What a stupid response! She clenched her jaw, though, shaking her head rapidly at his answers. None of them were good enough for her.
“They weren’t?” She asked quietly, then frowned, throwing her arms in the air. “Well, whatever!” Krista rolled her eyes, huffing because she didn’t have a smart enough retort.
‘Yer boyfriend religious then? Because a minute ago ye said he wasn’t the type.’
Krista thought about lying just to make her point, but figured that would be even worse within the walls of a Church. “He’s not, um, like━well, he could be open to it!” Her hands flailed a little bit, exasperated by this conversation and the fact that he’d managed to string her up with her own words. Mal wasn’t this annoying.
“Well, Iain, sorry ‘bout your wives, but you’re kinda makin’ no sense.” It was her turn now. Well, she’d try, at least. “Like, you don’t think God would welcome you, you’ve turned your back on Him, yada yada━but you still come to pray? What’s the use if you think He ain’t listenin’?” Krista raised her brows and smirked a bit, figuring she’d one-upped him now. “‘Cause you still believe, some part of ya, even if you say you’ve turned your back on Him. Clearly, there’s hope for vampires after all.” Krista nodded firmly, content with her argument.

Usually, it was the other way around where people were under the impression that every single vampire was scary and killed everyone, but Krista believed the complete opposite. She believed that her vampire boyfriend didn’t kill anyone. If he didn’t then he was probably the first vampire on earth that hadn’t killed anyone. Iain wasn’t buying it. Either she had been compelled to believe it or she was madly in love with the vampire to prove she refused to see his flaws. There was a tight smile on his face as Krista recoiled after he told her vampires hadn’t been around since the dawn of time. “They weren’t made in the eyes of God like humans.” They were some sinful addition to humans, created by magic. Surely she understood that God didn’t want vampires to exist? There were so many holes to her argument, but he hadn't dragged himself into the church to bicker with a young girl. He’d spent long enough going back and forth on things with Rose. It was exhausting trying to get her to see that her way, void of emotions, wasn’t the right way. “Maybe bring him along tae Sunday service next weekend.” An empty suggestion because he doubted this mysterious boyfriend of hers wanted to listen to the word of God being forced into his ears. The points she was raising were ones he’d asked himself a thousand times before. Why bother praying for Sabrina and Fiona if God wasn’t listening? He was almost adamant that Sabrina had found peace though. An innocent sweet human who was taken too soon, thanks to Iain. “Ah didn’t say I don’t believe in him, but there’s nae hope for me… A’ve murdered folk ‘n’ I don’t think God will let me pass his pearly gates…” His voice trailed off, “A’m wasting mah time ‘ere… na offence.” Iain stepped forward, resting his hand lightly on Krista’s right shoulder, ensuring she was looking back at him. “Yer nae gonna remember meeting me or remember this chat. Ye came tae Church, ‘twas a good service then ye headed home… all th’ best Krista.” All the best with her vampire boyfriend who was good as gold and was a future church goer. He moved past Krista, leaving the church. KRISTA MAY - da end
