— when you look at yourself, are you a man or a monster? —
Mystic Falls wasn't what Elio thought it was going to be. Ever since he came into town, he's been on the receiving end of these annoying little smiles that irked him to no end because these smiles made him feel like they knew him. Turns out, some people really know him, actually. But not as Elio. They called him Adam. They were so friendly with him to the point where it effortlessly bounced on his nerves. It made him want to curl his fingers into a fist and hail down the punches until they were bleeding from everywhere. But Mystic Falls didn't just have these people in it. It also had Hannya and as much as he wanted to turn and leave town entirely, he did come here to look for her. He wanted her to know just how goddamn angry he was at her for leaving him behind when he needed her the most. For forcing him to grow so quickly.
He hated her, but at the same time ... At the same time, he didn't.
Elio met Curtis, his father and that definitely made his world come crashing down on top of him because he never expected that. He has a father? Other than that asshole who never treated his mama right? This one... He was different. He bailed him out of jail, took him home, and made a meal for him, even if he was just heating it up for him. It reminded him of the much more gentle version of his mother. The woman who remembered his birthday -- once -- and made him a birthday cake and sang happy birthday to him. The one who would tell him that violence was never the answer... He missed her, but if he had been raised fully by that version, he would have turned up like Adam.
Elio never actually met the guy, but he had no doubt that he was the type of person to look at the world through rose-colored glasses. A doe-eyed boy with so much innocence coursing through his veins that it made him a target to bullies and Elio didn't want that.
He loved the power that he felt, he loved the fact that he wasn't so easily ruled by his emotions. Actually, scratch that, he did feel things a little too intensely at times, but those emotions were usually the negative ones and those emotions fueled him more than anything else.
It was the anger that he felt most of the time that made him a force to be reckoned with.
It made him Hannya's son.
"Yo, freak!" Elio didn't stop in his tracks because he knew there was no way they were talking to him, but then his arm was grabbed. "What? You can't hear us or some shit? So you're dumb and deaf?" He found himself staring at three different boys and the sight of them made him snort. "Something funny, freak?" One of them snapped, looking offended by the fact that Elio didn't look scared. "Oh, right. You're probably expecting me to cry by now. Hold on." Elio made a face that showed his attempt to cry but he quickly broke character. "Nah, can't be assed to do that. What I can do is this, though." Elio grabbed the boy's hand and squeezed hard until he heard the boy cry out in pain, though he seemed to stop when he heard a voice call out a name. A name that was beginning to piss him the hell off. Goddamn Adam. The hold he had on the boy's hand slacked and he seemed to take the opportunity to punch Elio in the cheek which made him stagger back a step before they ran off when a police siren went off. Elio raised his hand to wipe the blood from the edge of his lips, groaning but mainly in annoyance because if it weren't for the interruption, he would have killed them. He would have snapped their bones in different directions but now, they were long gone and he was stuck feeling angry as he turned to look at the person who called that annoying human's name.
