In the dim light of dusk the shadowed form made its way amongst the trees. The moon had yet to break its way out of the thick canopy of trees but it wasn’t needed. Thanks to what he had become in these woods a thousand years ago light was no longer necessary for him to pick his way down paths long worn into the loamy ground. Elijah could practically feel the wraiths of the past around him in the trees as he moved towards the cabin where Tatia had taken up residence after she’d fled from him on the road into town. There’d been a thousand year gap from the last time he’d made his way through these woods and his first journey back here to check on her. In that time countless people had died out here, at the hands of the werewolves who had been occupying this place when his family had arrived, at his own family’s hands, supposedly burned in the Church when war had come to Mystic Falls … each death left its stain upon the earth, each soul freed. He hadn’t believed in an afterlife in a very long time but Elijah knew that there was some existence after a heart stopped beating, he was proof of that, Tatia was proof of that.
Raising a hand, Elijah wormed his fingers against the dark cotton t-shirt he wore. Blunt fingertips skimmed the ribs over his heart, almost chasing the ache that lay beneath the arch of bone. If he’d possessed any trace of control after his turning she would have lived the long life she had deserved, with her son by her side, perhaps with another love in time. If his mother had not given in to her desperation he could have spent that long, human, life beside her. That life had been snatched from them, by his mother, by his own hands. Elijah avoided looking down at his hands now. Ever since Tatia had revealed just who had killed her, he had been half convinced her blood still stained them. It had only been in recent days that he had been able to push the guilt aside. Perhaps Katherine’s presence in town had finally forced rationality into his turbulent thoughts. More than one Petrova doppelganger had died because of his family, that vicious circle would be broken now, even if he had to fall to his knees to plead for forgiveness.
On more than one occasion he’d come so close to doing so. Standing amongst these trees he had watched Tatia adjust to her new life, finding himself transported back in time as he had pictured her doing the same things all those centuries along. It had been out here that he had seen the woman he still loved reunited with her son. He still couldn’t explain how either of them were still here but Elijah knew that he had to stop questioning how and start embracing the fact that he had been given a second chance. Lifting his chin he moved towards the cabin, knocking courteously upon the door before he found it swinging open in his grip. Concern began to grow in the pit of his stomach. The last time he had been here had only been a few short days ago and yet … Elijah pushed the door open slowly, barred from crossing the threshold but able to see even in the dark that the space beyond was unoccupied. Spinning on his heel, Elijah scanned the darkness around him. Had she ventured out at this time of night or had something happened? ”Tatia!” Elijah lifted his voice, let it carry on the air in case she had merely stepped away from the cabin for a short time. ”I have not come to cause harm…” He had come with quite the opposite intention in mind but now fear was gripping him, forcing his heart up within his throat. Surely fate could not yet have been so cruel as to snatch her away before he had been able to make amends.

Enough time had passed now that Tatia was much more used to the world she had found herself brought back into. She still didn’t know who had sought to bring her back after a thousand years or why they had done so but she knew better than to ask too many questions. What mattered was that she had been brought back and she finally had a second chance to live the life that had been taken from her so long ago. She knew that she had died before her time, she and Elijah should have had the chance to raise Lukas together, the chance to get married and have children of their own, but that had been taken from them. To begin with when she learned the truth she had been so upset and so scared that she had fled from Elijah, the man she had loved. Learning not just that she had been brought back to life a thousand years after her death as well as having to come to terms with the fact that she had been certain that she would never see her son again had been enough to take in on its own but add to that the fact that she had also had to somehow get her head around the fact that Elijah had been the one to take her life and it had all proved to be far too much for the young woman. She had taken off, she had gone back to the forest and she had made a camp for herself there. She had eventually migrated to an abandoned cabin in the woods but now she finally had a roof over her head and even though that had taken some getting used to she felt safe living at the Boarding House with the Salvatores and she knew that she was much better off there than she had been in the woods. Being out there had given her the chance to hold onto something that was familiar with her but she knew that she needed to adjust to the life she had been given and both Stefan and Elena were helping her with that and she knew she wouldn’t be able to thank them enough. Things were finally starting to fall into place now and learning that Lukas was alive and well was incredible. She still sometimes found it difficult to get her head around that, she had just been coming to terms with the fact that she would never see him again when their paths had crossed and she was enjoying getting to know the man that he had become. He had offered to let her stay with him and she had been tempted to accept but in the end she had realised that it would be better for them to get to know each other without living in each other’s pockets so she had declined, instead choosing to stay with the Salvatores although she still made sure to spend as much time with Lukas as she could. The world was so different now to the way that it used to be but she knew that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. She had a fresh start and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it. Soon enough she would be starting school, given that Elena had been born and raised in Mystic Falls it seemed logical to pass herself off as the other girl’s long lost twin to avoid raising suspicion and while she was a little nervous about the idea of attending school Stefan had been doing everything he could in order to help get her up to speed so she wouldn’t embarrass herself and the truth was that it was a challenge she was looking forward to tackling. That day she’d had some time to herself and as darkness fell she had found herself heading out towards the cabin she had stayed in for a while. Even though she knew that there were creatures lurking in the dark she hadn’t been about to let that put her off. Hearing Elijah’s voice, Tatia came to a stop. She could tell that he was worried and even though she would be lying if she said she wasn’t still a little scared of him she had met another vampire since then and she knew how easy it was for them to lose control and she had a second chance to make things up to Lukas so she knew she couldn’t continue holding a grudge. “What are you doing here Elijah?” she asked at last, her gaze steady as she looked over at him. Time and time again for a thousand years thoughts of what he had lost had filtered through Elijah’s mind periodically. The first glimpse he’d had of Katerina Petrova, her profile peeking from the screen of tumbled curls that were so unlike Tatia’s drawing his memory back to the village, to his attempts to take just one more look at her. The happy laughter of a bride in the 19th century, in woods not a thousand miles from here, as she was hand-fasted to her husband, later, the sight of a mother drawing her dark haired child along the streets of New York, chatting merrily to him as they’d gone about their business. All reminders of what had been, of what could have been. Each time he had found himself pushing the thoughts from his mind, concentrating on the vows he had made to his family, business to be conducted or even that bitter loathing for his mother and the magic she had wielded so heavily upon them instead. Then she had truly been there, in his path on the road back home, not just a figment of his imagination this time or the wistful dreams of a young man whose heart had remained cracked for a thousand years. To have been given that blessing of another chance with Tatia and then to have it snatched away by the knowledge that he had been the one to end her life. The guilt and the sense of loss had remained with him the last few weeks while he had watched Tatia adjust to her life here and had waited for his brother to sweep in and attempt to end it once again had been immense.
Looking frantically around the clearing where the cabin she had been living in lay Elijah wondered whether he had left his visit too late. Had something, someone, come for her out here? Had Tatia been taken from him again before he could beg her forgiveness? Dark eyes swept the trees around him, ears straining for the sound of footsteps, yet, when she finally approached, he was almost blind to her until her voice sounded. The relief almost drove him to his knees before he was able to draw his emotions back behind the mask he had spent the last thousand years perfecting. Elijah remained where he was, a scant half dozen steps from the darkened cabin, but his eyes drifted over every inch of Tatia, still searching for some sign of harm. ”I believed it was far past time for us to talk,” he admitted, his voice low as he slipped his hands into his pockets lest he give in to the urge to lay his hands upon her once more. ”I gave you space, I gave you time to come to terms with my regrettable … with what happened …” And now he was here to offer apologies, to plead for the mercy he surely did not deserve. No penitence was truly worth what had happened, what he had done, but he would offer it to his own dying day anyway. ”Were you walking?” Elijah asked, his voice growing faintly tighter as he glanced around the woods around them. ”At this time of night I would not venture far from home Tatia. These woods are no longer as safe as they once were.” That was thanks to his own kind, to the werewolves that had continued to live here long after this place had stopped resonating with his family’s name.

Tatia had occasionally heard about strange things happening before she died, every month she and the rest of the villagers had been forced to hide when the wolves turned and even though she had initially thought that it was just a game deep down she had always known that there was much more to it than that. That together with the rumours about Elijah’s mother being a witch had been enough to make Tatia believe that there was more going on in the world that she knew but at the end of the day her life had been pretty simple in comparison. She had married young and given birth to a beautiful baby boy only to have her husband die in battle before their son was more than a year old. She had known that magic ran in her husband’s veins, he had always been upfront with her about that but it had seemingly skipped a generation and neither of them had known whether magic would present itself in their son or not. Either way Tatia had always known that she would love him regardless and it had broken her heart to learn that not only had she been killed by the man she had loved but she had also broken her promise to her son that she would always be there. Neither of those things had been easy to deal with but she had always prided herself on being strong and resourceful and she had slowly started to come to terms with both of those things. She had never thought that there was a chance that Lukas could still be alive after such a long time, it had been strange enough knowing what Elijah and his siblings had become as a result of their mother’s actions but it hadn’t been that way for Lukas. He had found another way to make himself immortal which meant that she had a second chance to be there for him and it was a chance that she knew she was going to make the most of considering just how differently things could have turned out. With her son back in her life Tatia knew that she needed to forgive Elijah for what he had done all those years ago but just the thought of seeing him had been difficult. There was a time when she had thought that she had known Elijah better than anyone else but she had no idea about the man that he was now. Back then she had called him a monster but she couldn’t deny that when their paths had crossed on her first night back she had seen glimmers of the man that she used to know. She needed to know the person that Elijah had become but facing him wasn’t easy after everything that had happened although she couldn’t deny that her heart started to beat just a little faster as she realised that he had been worried about something happening to her. “I agree, it is time we talked,” Tatia nodded. Just how that talk was going to go she had no idea but she knew that they needed to give it a try, they owed each other that much. As he asked if she was out walking she shook her head before feeling a half smile tug at the corner of her mouth as he spoke again. “If you are referring to the vampires and other creatures that roam the woods I already know that,” she said, her tone gentle as she spoke. “I was out walking. I have been given a place to stay closer to town but I wanted to come back here for a while,” she explained before sitting down on the front step of the cabin and beckoning for Elijah to join her. “What did you want to talk about?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Avoidance had rarely been a successful tactic for anybody in life, however, it had served the Original family well enough for the better part of a thousand years. It had been all that had kept them safe from Mikael as he had attempted to chase them down and slaughter them. Without his knowing it had obviously protected him from the knowledge of what he had done in that dark night immediately after he had been turned. Yes, his mother’s magic had been strong, it had needed to be to turn them into what they had become, but in part Elijah had begun to suspect that he’d also been desperate to avoid picturing what he had done on that night. With his mother’s help he had long buried the memory of chasing Tatia down, of letting his hunger get the better of him. He hadn’t remembered the remorse that had filled him instantly or the grief that had driven him back to his mother with the woman he’d loved turning cold in his arms. Over the years other memories had been pushed the same way, never quite buried as deeply but shoved aside to allow him to continue running, to continue living by his siblings’ sides. Somehow he had forgiven them their sins, rationalised his own without truly facing up to his part in some of those tragedies and calamities.
Looking at Tatia now, hearing her heart rate pick up in her chest, Elijah knew he could avoid this no longer. She needed to hear his apology, needed to know that there was no need to fear him now at least. He was far more likely to fear for her, knowing what was coming to Mystic Falls, knowing that his own brother could take her life this time around. Feeling that relief again, albeit less violently this time, Elijah nodded faintly in response to Tatia’s agreement. At least she would do this much for him, he could apologise and would leave if she so wished it. He could not stop watching out for her, however, refused to leave her to handle the approaching storm by herself. Dark eyes narrowed faintly in response to the smile she gave him, no sense of reassurance rising in his mind. ”You are aware of them and yet you were still out here alone…” he murmured, certain he’d understood her correctly. ”You should take precautions, no matter how safe you feel moving between that place and here.” Given, Elijah thought, his mind whirring, by whom … he had seen Tatia talking to some of those around the town, including her own doppelganger but caught up in his brother’s pending arrival, he had perhaps not paid quite enough attention.
Standing still, Elijah watched as Tatia sat, blinking as she beckoned to him. Cautiously, uncertain of how she felt about his proximity, Elijah approached, settling on the worn steps a respectful distance from her. Dark eyes dropped, studying the clean hands in that had settled onto his thighs. ”I wanted to offer my apology for what I did, for…” Elijah paused for breath, forcing himself to lift his gaze to hers, ”…for taking your life. I had no control then, no understanding of what my mother’s spell had done to us. I’ve learned restraint since, how to control the hunger within me. It’s no excuse for what happened but I hope it is an explanation you will be able to accept.” He was certain forgiveness would not be given so easily. Tatia had always had a forgiving nature, a beautiful heart, but he had done the unthinkable, taking her life, stealing her from the son she had been raising as a single parent.

Tatia had known that sooner or later she and Elijah would need to speak and clear the air, the two of them had a lot of history and now that they were living in the same town she knew that it was only natural that their paths would cross. One thing she had never expected, however, was for Elijah to end up seeking her out at the cabin. When they had met it had been by the roadside that first night after she had been brought back and while she had taken to the woods after she realised what Elijah had done and what he had become she had never told him where she was staying. Now it became clear that he had apparently been keeping tabs on her, however, and she wasn’t too sure how she should feel about that. It was difficult, when she first saw Elijah she had been full of nothing but love for the man that had captured her heart a thousand years ago but now when she looked at him that fear was clouded by fear at what he had done and the anger she had felt when she had realised that he was the reason her son had been forced to grow up an orphan. Being forgiving had always been in her nature but this was bigger than anything she’d had to get over before. She had thought about cutting Elijah out of her life completely after everything that had happened but she knew that if she did that then she wouldn’t be being true to herself so she had quickly dismissed that idea. He was a part of her past that she wasn’t ready to let go of and she knew that she wanted him to be a part of her present and future too, it was just going to take time. “You are still worried about me, I see,” she said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at him. She knew Elijah was right, she did need to be careful especially if she was going to live out the long and happy life that had been taken from her all those years ago but that day she had felt the need to visit the place that had been her safe haven for a while and she had failed to really be cautious. She knew that there were creatures out there in the woods but at the end of the day she had spent weeks living out there and had still managed to leave in one piece so she felt certain that nothing would happen to her while she ventured between the cabin and the Boarding House. “I lived out here for a while without running into too much trouble Elijah, you do not need to worry,” she added. As he sat down a distance from her Tatia offered no resistance, she had beckoned for him to join her but the truth was that she was glad to have a little space between them. His was still the face of the man she loved but things were complicated now and she knew that they would no doubt stay that way for some time to come. As he spoke again, Tatia found herself nodding. “I do accept your explanation,” she began slowly. “I met another vampire before I found this cabin and I saw in her just how easy it is to lose control. I understand,” she nodded. “I was angry and scared the night we found each other again, perhaps a part of me still is, but Lukas is still alive so I have a second chance at being there for him and we can finally make up for lost time. I don’t hate you Elijah, I can’t.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

In the time since he had found her on the outskirts of town Elijah had found himself in these woods again and again. It was almost like those long weeks he had watched Tatia from afar as a young man, his affections for her growing even before he had allowed himself to act upon them. This time had not been about courtship, however, it had been about protecting the life he had already snuffed out once. His family were no longer the biggest danger in this town, although Niklaus’ arrival would likely change that. Other threats had come to call this town home after the years and many, if discovering that a part of the Mikaelson family history had been returned to them, would have targeted Tatia immediately. Protection hadn’t been the only reason he had taken to ghosting these woods, however. A heart long since supposedly gone cold had begun to reawaken, the grief, the pain he had felt in those centuries after his mother had supposed taken her life had hit him afresh. Dozens of times he had found himself just a dozen feet from her without Tatia’s knowing, his gaze studying her before drifting to the hands where he could now remember her blood cooling. The guilt for his actions had been hidden for too long, the penance he should have paid wiped away by his mother. Elijah could see only one way to pay it now, to gain Tatia’s forgiveness, to try and give her peace of mind over the son long since lost to her.
Once her teasing words would have drawn a smile from him, one to mirror her own, but now was a slight crack in the veneer of worry covering his features, a faint twitch of his mouth that did nothing to bely his seriousness. ”Always,” he assured her hoarsely. ”No matter how many years have passed, I will always worry about you.” Given that he had been the one to kill her in the first place Elijah was fairly sure he didn’t have the right to be but that worry, that fear, had begun to lodge painfully beneath his breastbone. While he was there he could protect here, for there was little in this world that could stop him, but he knew he could not always be there and when it came to Niklaus, his brother often ended up with the upper hand. If only he could make it painfully clear to Tatia just what danger she was in but he had seen enough fear etched into her face in his reawakened memories to wish to avoid that once more. ”I will always worry,” he reminded her, his jaw tightening at the thought of what would happen when Niklaus learned of her resurrection. ”Just please, keep watch, take care of yourself.” And he would do the same for her.
Bidden to sit he had sunk down upon the wooden steps, leaving a distance between them that tugged at the strings of his heart. Once he would have earned the right to be there beside her, but no longer. Concern had Elijah’s breath rasping from his lips as she explained how she had met another vampire, had seen them lose control. He bit his tongue though, teeth truly sinking into it as Tatia told him Lukas was still alive. ”I would ask how but given what miracles are already happening in Mystic Falls I should not find it a shock. You should have despised me for making you break your vow to him. A part of me is grateful that you are willing to look past that, another part of me hates itself for what I have done.” That part of him was still laden with the weight of his guilt – the first woman he had ever loved had been the first he had killed.

There was a time when Tatia and Elijah had been completely at ease around one another. They always used to be able to tease and confide in each other but now Elijah’s expression didn’t really change at her teasing words. She knew that he was worried about her and after everything that had happened she couldn’t blame him but she would be lying if she said that even now she didn’t still wish that there was something she could say or do that would ease his mind even a little. Everything had changed, nothing was as it used to be but even though she knew the truth now and Elijah did too those feelings she had once felt for him still lingered. She had wanted to hate him for what he had done and what he had taken from her but after meeting Charlotte and seeing just how easy it was for a vampire to lose control not to mention finding out that Lukas was still alive she knew in her heart that she just could not stay angry at him, she did not have it in her to do that. As he spoke she felt a smile touch her lips. “I feel the same, I cannot stop worrying about you either,” she admitted. She knew that she probably should not have voiced those words but in that moment she had needed him to know that she still cared. She did not know what had happened to him during the thousand years since she had last seen him but every time she looked into his eyes all she saw was pain and she knew that she did not want to be the cause of any more of his suffering. As he said that he would always worry before urging her to take care of herself, Tatia moved so that she was next to him and she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “You have my word Elijah, I will be careful,” she assured him, her smile kind as she looked up at him. She knew the dangers that Mystic Falls held lurking under the surface and she knew she could not afford to take any risks, she owed not just Elijah but herself and Lukas that much at least. She understood why Elijah was keeping a distance from her and in a way she knew that was probably what they needed but it still pained her. She did not know if the relationship between the two of them could ever be repaired but she knew that she wanted to try. “He used magic to make himself immortal. He said it was similar to the spell your mother used but not quite the same. He did not become a vampire,” she explained. She did not understand the ins and outs of it and she knew that perhaps she never would but she trusted what Lukas had told her. As Elijah spoke again, Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “For a while I did hate you for making me break my promise but now I have the chance to make things right with Lukas and I have a second chance at life so I do not want to waste it by being angry,” she said gently. “This world is incredible and I want to enjoy my time here however long it may be, not dwell on the past,” she added. She still did not know who had brought her back to life or why they had done so but she knew that she did not want to waste a moment of the time that she had been given dwelling on what had happened a thousand years ago. “Do not hate yourself Elijah, you did not do it willingly and I know the good man that I fell in love with is still in there. You are not the monster I accused you of being.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

If there was anything that should have shattered the bond between them, that should have taken away his right to ever be concerned about Tatia’s wellbeing again, it was what he had done to her on that night a thousand years ago. He had at times allowed himself to be happy again, to offer his heart to others. Maybe the fact that each had been snatched away from him was the punishment he hadn’t known he had deserved for having the blood of his first love upon his hands. He had no right to follow her out here, no right to watch her from a distance or seek out her forgiveness. That right had been forfeit and yet the moment he had arrived her and found her gone Elijah had been unable to prevent the terror from rising up in him. The warnings had tumbled out before he had been able to bite them back and he had half expected Tatia to tell him it was none of his business. The smile that touched her lips, the admission that slipped from them was enough to tell him that perhaps the severing of that tie between them had not been as complete as he had first thought when she’d fled from the man who’d killed her.
A faintly wry smile touched his mouth for a moment as his dark eyes scanned the clearing around them. ”You have no need to worry for my safety,” he assured her. ”The spell my mother wrought guaranteed that there was little that would ever be able to harm her children.” Other than their own family, and the ash of the tree that he grown not far from here. Elijah’s jaw flexed at Tatia’s promise, his gaze moving back to hers as she squeezed his hand. “I am glad to hear it,” he managed honestly. ”You will always have me watching out for you.” He would gladly offer his life, as it was for hers, even if it meant placing himself between his brother and his dream of shattering the spell binding his dual nature. Family had always come above all but to be forced to choose yet again between his heart and his duty to his younger brother once more would finally perhaps be that one step too far.
If Niklaus discovered his intentions he would likely spend the next century in his coffin, separated from Tatia, unable to protect her from what Niklaus intended to do to her. Elijah stiffened, his body freezing at the word magic. To break the laws of nature that way was so often to incur a cost, the sort he and his siblings were still paying. ”If I had known that he was out there I would have kept my word and kept watch over him,” Elijah said on a long breath. By the time he had regained much of who he had been he had believed Lukas long gone from this world. That pain beneath his breastbone started once more as Tatia told him that she had hated him for a time, for making her break her promise to her son. Elijah was certain he had deserved no less. He lifted his head, dark eyes studying her face as she added that she did not wish to dwell on the past. ”The good man that you fell in love with disappeared the moment my mother changed us.” It was a blunt way to put it but Elijah was certain it was true. Even after he had managed to shed the mantle of monster he had remained someone else. What little humanity he possessed had so often been buried, along with his happiness, his dreams, for the good of his family. ”I cannot promise you that the monster does not still rear his head from time to time.” But always for a reason, he told himself now. To keep them safe, to prevent a greater evil. It was no reason to forgive his actions but was at least an excuse for them.

So much had changed since she died, that much was obvious to Tatia as she looked over at Elijah, but one thing that had not changed despite the fact that she had wanted it to after learning what he had done was the way that she felt about him. She did not know everything that had happened since she died but one thing she was certain about was that she still loved Elijah and she knew that the last thing she wanted was for any harm to come to him or for him to hurt more than he had done already. The life they should have had was not an option now but they were together in this new world and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it. Elijah was one of the few people in town she knew and the only person who knew her really well so needless to say she knew that she did not want to lose him from her life completely. She had tried to hate him for what he had done and she had failed miserably after learning that Lukas was still alive. She had been given a second chance at having a life with her son, albeit not in the way she had imagined, and she knew that it was only fair that she give Elijah a second chance as well. As Elijah said that she did not need to fear for his safety, Tatia felt a smile touch her lips. “That may be so but I will always worry about you, you should know that by now,” she said sincerely. That was the way it had always been and even though Elijah was no longer the same man that he had been before she died she still caught glimpses of him every now and then and as far as she was concerned the fact that he still cared about her enough to want to keep her safe really did speak volumes. As he said that she would always have him watching out for her, Tatia nodded. “The same goes for you,” she admitted. Even though Elijah had said that the spell his mother had used meant that no harm would come to her children Tatia knew that she would still look out for him if she could. As Elijah said that he would have kept his word and watched over Lukas had he known he was still alive Tatia’s expression was gentle as she looked over at him. “I know you would have. Life was not easy for him but he is a survivor as all those who share my blood are,” she said softly. “Please just promise me that you will continue to watch over him now if you get the chance?” she asked. Lukas had magic on his side but even so she had a feeling that Elijah could protect him in ways that he could not and if it came down to it she knew she would feel better knowing that there was someone else out there who would come to her son’s aid. As Elijah said that the man she fell in love with disappeared the moment they became vampires, Tatia thought about that for a moment. “I do not believe that,” she said at last. “If that man had disappeared then you would not have sworn to watch over me. You may not see the man I used to know but I still see him in you, you will still do what you have to in order to protect those you care about.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

A part of Elijah’s mind whispered that this was not what he had deserved. Burying his guilt for a thousand years had not given him an easy life, anything but in fact, but it had spared him the pain that should’ve been his to suffer. The woman beside him had died at his hands, her blood had stained his skin and the ground they had lived upon. Thanks to his hunger she had lost the life with her son she should’ve lived all those centuries ago. Despite the fact that she was adjusting now, Elijah knew that it truly should not have been this way. All he had ever wanted for Tatia was her happiness. Elijah knew he couldn’t mourn the loss of it, the existence she should have had. With Tatia back here, given a second chance of life, he knew he shouldn’t be mourning at all but the dark cloud that was Niklaus wouldn’t allow the fear and grief to slip away entirely. How long did they have before his brother drove into town? How long before he would need to make the choice between the woman he still loved and the brother he had sworn a vow to? He didn’t know, all that he was certain of was that he couldn’t hand over Elena Gilbert or Katherine in Tatia’s place. Katerina might have been perfectly willing to exchange another’s life for her freedom but he could not bear the thought of any of them losing their life in the name of his brother’s so called freedom.
For well over a century now there hadn’t been anybody concerned with his safety. The last to care for him that way had been Celeste and his brother’s mercurial spirit had snuffed out her life as surely as those who had been determined to rid New Orleans of its witches. ”I had hoped…” he admitted hoarsely. ”But I was not sure whether or not your … fear … of me would erase any other feelings you may once have had for me.” Fear could be a powerful motivator, one that could swallow love whole but in the strong … he had seen it the other way a time or two, a heart that had been able to beat once more despite the pain. Elijah lifted his hand, brushing it over his own chest at the thought. His had been brought back to life more than once, he had only been able to hope that the same would be said for Tatia’s. Even if it hadn’t, if she had never found forgiveness within herself, he would have continued to keep watch over her, the way he had since she had returned to town. The ache that had settled in Eljiah’s chest began to ease at the touch of her hand, at her words of assurance.
Dark eyes searched her face as he spoke of Lukas. ”He takes after his mother,” he said softly. Elijah raised his free hand as she asked for his promise, settling over his heart as his expression grew sombre. ”You have my word and this time I will do everything in my power to keep it. He will always have me as a guardian.” Given what was coming to Mystic Falls both Tatia and Lukas might soon need him that way. He didn’t believe that their guardian would be the same man he had been when Tatia had first given him her heart, but they would have the man he was now. Elijah let his hand fall away from his chest, gently placing it over their joined hands. ”That may be the only part of that man left,” he told her honestly. ”I made a vow to my brother on the night we were turned, one that has guided almost every action since. I fear that his arrival in town will require me to bury what remains of the Elijah Mikaelson you knew deep inside.” If he could avoid it, then he would, but that choice between duty and love felt like it was only becoming more and more pressing with each day.

The more time Tatia spent with Elijah the more she was reminded of the man she had once known, the one that she had given her heart to a thousand years ago. It had not been easy to decide between Elijah and Niklaus though that was a choice she knew should not have been hers to make anyway after everything she had been through but in the end she had known that the only thing she could do was listen to her heart and it had told her that Elijah was the one she was supposed to be with. Never had she thought that he would be the one to take her life from her and though it pained her to think of it now being around Elijah helped a little. She had accused him of being a monster back then but she knew that it was not his choice to become what he now was, Esther had made that decision for him and she knew that she should not hold his actions against him. She knew that it would take time for her to move on completely from what he had done but she was willing to try and deep down she knew that once she finally felt like she was truly settled in this town and in this time then that would help. Until then all she could do was make the best of it and make the most of whatever time she had. So far the truth about who had sought to bring her back or why had still eluded her but she had a feeling that it was only a matter of time before the truth came out and even if her time ended up being short she knew that she wanted to be able to say that she had lived her life to the full. As Elijah spoke Tatia felt a gentle smile touch her lips. “It will take time before I can leave what you did behind me but the fact that I care about you has not changed, nor will it ever,” she assured him. No matter what he had done in the past or what he might do in the future there were still remnants of the man she had fallen in love with inside of him and she knew that that man was one she would never be able to turn her back on. “I fought because I had a reason to live in Lukas and I still do. I also had a reason to live in you. If there is one thing that I am glad I passed on to my son it is that fighting spirit, without it I would never have seen him again,” she said, her tone soft as she spoke. She knew that it was true, had Lukas not decided that he wanted to live then he would have died a long time ago as nature had intended. He had defied that fate, however, and not a day went by when she wasn’t glad that he had sought to do something about it. As Elijah said that Lukas would always have him as a guardian, Tatia’s smile returned. “Thank you Elijah, I can rest easy knowing you will be there to look over him,” she admitted. Even though Lukas had lived a thousand years without her she was his mother and her first concern would always be for him. Looking down at their joined hands as Elijah placed his free hand over her own, Tatia’s eyes widened as he said that may be the only part of the man she used to know left. “Do not say that Elijah,” she breathed. “I do not know the vow you made to your brother but I do know the man you were to become. You say that I am a survivor but you are too, you are one of the strongest men I have ever met. I will not give up on you so do not give up on yourself,” she said, a fierce note in her voice as she spoke. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

It was one thing not to refute the words whispered about him, the noble Mikaelson, the peacemaker, the most human of the bunch, Elijah knew it was another entirely to believe his own press. The Noble Mikaelson had done plenty to tarnish what he’d once believed to be his bright shining armour. A thousand years ago in these woods he had dreamed of adventure, of becoming like the men he’d read about in the sagas. He would be a man unlike his father, one who hadn’t let the world harden him towards his family. That man had not survived the spell his mother had cast upon them. He had believed that the Elijah Mikaelson who dreamed of those things had taken centuries to be worn away, like water on stone, but hearing from Tatia’s own lips that he had been the one to take her life had revealed just how many years he had spent fooling himself. It had become clear to him then that he had merely been fooling himself all those years, believing himself to be above his siblings. And yet, after his helpless brother, who had been the first to slaughter? He had and he did not have Niklaus’ excuse of losing his sentience with his transformation. The thing that had killed Tatia might have been driven by hunger but it had been his hands upon her, his teeth rending her flesh.
The thought had struck him dozens of times since he had found Tatia on the side of the road, since she had fled from him. Elijah knew that a part of him would now never be able to forget what he had done, the rose coloured spectacles had been torn away, leaving him with a stark, permanent vision of what had happened. Yet … when he could not set aside what he had done, Tatia could. Elijah’s eyes narrowed faintly as his gaze settled on her mouth, on the smile curving her lips. ”That will survive whatever comes for both of us,” he agreed hoarsely. A part of him wanted to light up with hope at the thought that what had happened could be left behind but Elijah knew better than to believe the past would remain in the past. Some clung to what had happened, let it swamp them, others, like Tatia, had always railed against it. ”Your possession of it guaranteed that you would keep the promise you made to him,” Elijah said softly. ”I’m just sorry that it took so long for you to be able to be able to keep your word.” That was upon him. It was his burden to make amends for now I offering to watch out for Lukas. With what was coming the young warlock would need it. If he had his way Tatia would never need to worry again.
He on the other hand… there were enough worries upon his mind to drown him. They seemed to fade faintly as his hands closed around hers, the sight reminding him of the way they had been centuries before. The skin around Elijah’s eyes tightened as Tatia spoke, consternation, a grim certainty gripping him. ”That man stood by for centuries while his brother raged,” Elijah said quietly. ”I could have walked away, refused to take any part in the violence but I held on to the vow, swore that I could see the boy he had been in the monster he became.” Elijah’s gaze rose as the fierceness filled Tatia’s voice. ”I can only hope that I will survive what is coming. Niklaus will not like what is going to happen here.” No doubt his brother would sweep into town, certain that this time he would succeed. There was another young, naïve doppelganger and the moonstone was perhaps close enough to grasp this time. One of the only things standing in his way was his own brother.

Tatia could see that a lot had changed since she had died, there were times when Elijah struck her as being so tortured and whenever she looked into his eyes she could see the pain that they held, but there were still glimmers of the man that she once knew. Towards her Elijah seemed kind and gentle just the way he always had done but she had seen the creature that lurked within him and she was not sure whether others got to see that same side of him. No matter what she knew that she cared about Elijah, she still loved him, and that was something that had not changed. Even when the memory of what she had done came back to her she had felt angry to begin with and hurt that the man she had loved had been the one to take her life but at the end of the day all of that had happened a long time ago and she knew that she could not continue to hold a grudge. For a while it had felt like it had only happened yesterday since she had no recollection of what had happened after she died but for Elijah and Lukas it had happened a thousand years ago and she knew that for their sake she needed to let it go. It was time she started getting on with her life and she knew that she could only do that when she truly moved on from what Elijah did all those years ago and that was exactly what she wanted to do although she knew that it was going to take a little time. As Elijah said that he was sorry it took her so long to be able to keep her promise to Lukas, Tatia gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “As am I but I have been given the chance to make things right now with both Lukas and with you and I am not going to waste that chance,” she assured him. She did not know how long she would have with the people she cared about, while it was true that she had been brought back to life she still did not know who had sought to do so or why they had brought her back after such a long time but one thing she had always believed in was that something given could so easily be taken away and she knew that she was not going to take the time she had for granted. She wanted to live life to the full and experience as much of it as she could during whatever time she had. As Elijah’s hands closed around hers Tatia felt a slight smile touch her lips. There was something so simple about that small point of connection, it reminded her of the way that things used to be for a moment although she had a feeling that whatever small sense of bliss had descended on them in that moment would prove to be short lived. “You stood by your family, Elijah, no one can fault you for that,” she assured him gently. “In fact it is one of the things I always admired about you,” she added. Family had always meant the world to Elijah, it was one of the things that had drawn her to him in the first place, and if she was honest she would have been surprised if that had changed. As he spoke again her expression turned instantly to one of concern. “What do you mean? What is going on Elijah?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Practice made perfect, it was a lesson most children learned very early on. Their father had tried to teach the lesson to all of them, especially Niklaus. Mikael had seemed to take great joy in his failures, using them to belittle the child who’d been the evidence of his wife’s fidelity. It had taken years afterwards for him to realise that their father’s method had little to do with the original intent of the words and more to do with the punishment of a wife who had betrayed him. Elijah had found the lesson sticking with him for the next thousand years, with each person he fed from, with each ounce of control he gained, with each occasion on which he had to extract his siblings from trouble, he found the words echoing through his mind. So often the practice was of a sort nobody should have suffered through once, yet alone hundreds of times, but each time had helped, allowing him to hold on to the parts of himself he had foolishly believed were clinging to what he had once been. It hadn’t been until he had found Tatia out on the road that he had realised just how falsely those words could ring. He might have spent the last thousand years practising but never had he managed to find perfection, instead each attempt had merely left him more tarnished, had eroded the chances he had been given time and again.
Elijah felt the squeeze of Tatia’s fingers not only against the skin of his palm, but around his heart as well. It should not have required a second chance for her to keep her promise to her son. The fact that she had a second chance now did something to take the edge off of the sting but Elijah still doubted that there would be a chance for the two of them. ”So few have second chances, it is wise to never waste them,” he agreed softly. It should have been a message for him to take to hear too but Elijah still felt that tickle of doubt. What if the second chance ending the way his first with Tatia had? Then he would find a way on, he thought, could only find a way on. What his mother had made them had guaranteed that he could never be free, death was near impossible and Tatia’s return was proof that even if it was, it might never be permanent. The only things he had ever known to be were the vow he had made to his siblings and the love he’d had for the first woman to capture his heart.
Elijah shook his head slowly at the words of assurance slipping from Tatia’s lips. He skimmed his thumb along the side of hers, letting the contact ease some of the guilt. ”Loyalty is one thing, standing by and allowing them to kill, allowing death to follow in their wake, that should never have happened. I let the promise I made to them blind me to so much.” He had leaned upon that vow when the time had come to follow his brother’s orders time and again, had blamed it for so many things when he’d had the opportunity to stand against it. Each and every time he had sworn to those around him that he could still see the good in Niklaus, that he believed his brother could be redeemed. Now he was not so sure, not when they were so close to Niklaus slaughtering to break that spell, when he could lose what he had just regained. Elijah’s throat worked as he locked gazes with Tatia, as he felt his heart ache for what might come to pass. ”I cannot condone what Niklaus is coming here to do. This time I must stand against him, even if it means centuries locked away in punishment.” The only thing that mattered was the three women bearing the same face, those that had always been innocent in this.
