━ i’ll keep fighting ... till i got nothing left ━
IT had been a few days since he had seen Ben and with everything that had gone on with the entire Sam and Lucifer ordeal, Dean could use some father-son bonding time. Just the two of them. When Dean found out that Ben was in fact his flesh and blood, he couldn't believe it. Then again, a part of him had always suspected, the two of them were too damn similar for him not to be his son. Lisa could lie and say he wasn't his, but Dean somehow always knew the truth. Ben was his son, his own blood. Dean never thought he would ever get that change, to have his own child, and yet, he somehow managed to have one of his own. If Lisa hadn't died years ago, Ben would have a normal life, wouldn't have been sucked into this hunter mess of a life. He would have gotten the childhood and life he deserved, and yet, that isn't what life had planned for him. Instead, like his father, Ben was thrust into the hunter life and had no way of getting out anytime soon, not that he would want to. Dean had tried to talk Ben out of being a hunter multiple times, but the kid was stubborn as hell, which he knew exactly where that came from and it wasn't Lisa.
No matter how many times Dean had tried to talk Ben out of it, he was adamant that he was going to stay in the life and be by his side. Dean hated the fact Ben was in the life and wished nothing more that he could get out and try and live a normal life. But he was a Winchester after all and normalcy wasn't exactly something that they were able to have, no matter how much they wished. Dean had accepted the fact that he would die in this life, that he would die doing what he did best: huntin,' and he was fine with that. He had come to terms with it, as he was sure Sam did as well. The two of them had been cursed from the gecko. The two never had a chance, no thanks to those winged bastards up top. It was literally written in the stars and that sentiment disgusted the hell outta him, but there was quite literally nothing he could do about it. What's done was done and that was just the cards he was given. But despite all the crap he and Sam had been through over the years, one good thing came out of it.
Ben.

Hey Kiddo, I'm starvin.' Wanna get lunch?
- End of Message -
Dean pressed send as he tapped the steering wheel of the Impala, waiting on Ben to hopefully message him back. Hopefully the kid wasn't busy and wanted to join him for some lunch. Which knowing Ben, he wouldn't pass up on the chance to have some lunch. He and Ben had grown close over the years and the two had developed that father/son bond he had always dreamed of having someday with his kids should he ever have any of his own and thankfully, he did. Dean cherished the one-on-one moments he had with Ben, ones that didn't include huntin' or monsters or anything else other than ordinary. It was his chance to try and live somewhat of a normal life, well, as normal as a hunter's life could be. Somehow though, every time he tried to do so, something always happened that screwed it up. Whether it be angels, demons, or any other supernatural bastard, they were all the same. All Dean could hope for in that moment was that nothing of the sort happened and that he and his son could have a normal lunch together.
But knowing how his life usually turned out, he wasn't holdin' his breath.

Ben had met a lot of people along the way who had looked at him like he was crazy for getting into hunting at such a young age without having a family member to guide them but as far as he was concerned there hadn’t been any other choice in the matter. He and his mom had been attached by a vampire and she had been killed. Her body had never been found so it was only years later when he’d finally managed to track down the vampire that had attacked them that night that he’d learned what had really happened to her. Ben knew that he had changed from the boy that he used to be, he’d had to grow up fast but if he was honest he didn’t regret any of the things that he had done after his mom had died. He had learned a lot while he was travelling the country working different cases and following any leads on the vampire that he could find and even though that had meant that he hadn’t bothered with school for quite a while he knew that it was the right thing for him at the time. Moving to Mystic Falls had ended up being a complete change of pace however. It was there that he had ended up finally finding the vampire responsible for killing his mom and Ben had put a stop to the vampire’s reign of bloodshed once and for all and it was also there that he had found his dad. Things had been awkward at first when they’d found out the truth, after all his mom had always said that there was no way they could be father and son, but it turned out that she had lied to both of them. Ben had hated her for a while for keeping the truth from them both but now he understood why she had done so. She hadn’t wanted his dad to feel obligated to stay with them so in her own way she had been looking out for both of them. Ben had already enrolled in school before he found Dean but it had made him realise that he wanted to stay in town and he had been building a life for himself there ever since. Ben knew that he could have turned his back on hunting after he’d died and Henrik had brought him back to life but it was literally in his blood. Instead he had found a balance between going to school and having a somewhat normal life during that day that even involved having a girlfriend and soccer but he still hunted on the side so he had the best of both worlds. That day Ben had been catching up with some friends since his classes had already finished for the day when his phone chimed with a message from his dad and he felt a smile form on his lips as he read it. Sure. Want to pick me up from Scott’s and we can head to the Grill? he shot back, hoping that his dad would remember the address. Normally he would have his own car with him but sometimes when he and some of his friends were on similar schedules they took one car to make it easier and that day had been one of those. ━ i’ll keep fighting ... till i got nothing left ━
DEAN had a lot on his mind as he sat there inside of the Impala, fingers absentmindedly drumming on the steering well. Sam was back, had showed up out of the blue a couple of days ago, Lucifer free. Dean didn't know what the hell to think about it. But whatever he felt, he shoved it down, deep, deep down. Hell, he was just glad Sammy was alright and was free from that ass clown. Which even though Sam was free, there was still a hell lotta problems left to worry about, for starters, where the hell Lucifer was and what the hell he wanted now that he was out of Sam. What was his end goal? Had he found another vessel? So many unanswered questions was leaving Dean antsy. Dean was already restless as hell, getting only a couple of hours of sleep here and there when he could. It came with the job and after the life he lived, sleeping longer than a couple hours could kill ya. Literally, and he had died one too many times for his liking. The last time he'd died he had come back as a demon and that was the last damn thing he needed to happen ever again.
The vibration from his phone snapped him out of the trance he was in and he glanced down to see a text back from Ben, telling him to pick him up from his friend, Scott's place and then they could head to the grill. Thankfully Dean knew exactly where Scott lived and he was only maybe ten minutes from where Ben was. Perfect, he was starving and he needed anything at all to get his mind off of the fact that Lucifer was out free roaming somewhere doing god knows what. Something that he and Sam would probably have to fix.

Be there in 10.

Dean pressed send and put the Impala into drive and headed towards Scott's to pick up Ben. Around ten minutes later and Dean had pulled up in front of Scott's house and honked the horn, signaling for Ben to come on out so that they could go and grab some grub and talk. Dean had to catch the kiddo up on what he'd missed, starting with the fact that Sam was back and was Lucifer free. Ben was a lot like him in a lot of ways. One of the many trademark Winchester personality traits being that they were stubborn and would do anything to save their family, even if it meant putting themselves at risk. Ben had done it already before and it ended with him dying in his arms. That was a night he would never forget, it was one that was etched into his skull forever with no sign of ever being erased. How could it? He had to sit there, helpless, as his own son drew his last breaths. Dean had done that with Sammy before and it was almost eerie how similar Ben's death had been. Even though Ben had been brought back, that night still haunted him endlessly. Always would.
But despite that, Ben was back and had been for sometime now. Ever since he had been brought back Dean had made damn sure to keep an extra close eye on him. He was even more protective than he had been in the past, if that were even possible. Whenever he and Ben went out on hunts, he watched the kid like a hawk, watching his every moment. It was why he didn't go on many hunts with him anymore, because his sole focus was on his son and not the hunt, which could prove dangerous for them both. So it was better if he hunted alone, because at least then he wouldn't have to spend the entire hunt worrying about someone else and watching their movements instead of focusing on the task at hand.

Ben hadn’t known just how good life would end up being when he moved to Mystic Falls, he had spent year trying to find leads on the vampire that had killed his mother and he had also been trying to track down his father. Both had seemed like a needle in a haystack and truth be told he had been starting to lose hope but as it turned out he had ended up finding both on the same day. Ben had encountered Dean on a hunt and that day the creature he had been hunting was the vampire he had been looking for all along. Ever since then it had been somewhat of a rollercoaster but right now things were better than they had been for a long time. Ben still hunted but he was balancing that with being a college student, son, boyfriend and friend at the same time. He hadn’t even known it was possible to have all of that and he knew better than to take it for granted. His dad had been on edge ever since Sam had disappeared so he wasn’t really surprised that Dean had reached out asking if he wanted to catch up. Ben had spent some time with his friends that day and he planned on spending some time with Claire later as well but he hadn’t known when he would get to hang out with his dad so he had been more than happy to agree. He wasn’t sure how his dad felt about the fact that some of his friends were supernatural but Ben had always known that it was who a person was that mattered rather than what they were and he still stood by that now. That day he had been hanging out at Scott’s when his dad sent the text and even though he had been a little apprehensive at first having his dad know where the True Alpha lived the truth was that Ben trusted his dad not to hurt any of his friends. Hearing his phone chime signalling that he had a new text, Ben felt a smile touch his lips as he saw that it was his dad saying that he would be there in ten minutes. Letting his friends know, Ben stayed with them catching up until he heard a horn blaring outside. He knew that there was only one person that could be and the truth was that Ben couldn’t wait to hang out with his dad. It was something that he had taken for granted somewhat while Dean was living with them but he knew better than to do that now. If he was honest Ben hadn’t even expected his dad to stick around in Mystic Falls for this long but he seemed content being there even though they were still living in the motel and that meant the world to Ben. It was good to have a place to call home even if hunts sometimes took them away from the town but then again there were plenty of supernaturals that passed through Mystic Falls and wanted to hurt people anyway so there was plenty to keep them busy. Ben had learned a long time ago that not all supernaturals were evil so he made a point of protecting them as much as he did innocent humans and it helped having that balance as far as he was concerned. Saying goodbye to his friends Ben grabbed his bag and headed outside, a smile forming on his face as he reached the Impala and climbed inside. “Hey dad, what’s up?” he asked, not sure whether his dad genuinely just wanted to hang out or whether there was something that he wanted to tell him. ━ i’ll keep fighting ... till i got nothing left ━
WHILE Dean knew that Ben could take care of himself, he still worried about him. With him being Dean Winchester's son, he was more of a target that he probably would ever realize. He didn't help that Ben used his last name, but in a lot of ways he was glad he did, because it meant he wanted to be his son. Ben could have easily kept Lisa's last name, but he decided that he wanted his last name to be Winchester. It made him happy in a lot of ways, more than he could ever express, but it also made him worry profusely, because he knew what it meant to have the last name Winchester. It meant having a target on your back. It meant having the entire world on your shoulders. It meant never having a normal, human, life, because their entire existence had been quite literally created by God and the angels. Dean hated it with ever fiber of his being, but it was something he had come to terms with. He accepted it. With how long he had been huntin,' it was just something that he had to live with.
No matter how much he didn't want to.
Dean often wondered if Ben felt the same as he did, if he ever wanted to live a normal life. He had originally hoped that his son would get that chance with him having left him and Lisa behind years ago, that after making them forget him, that they would get to live a normal, quiet, life. But that hadn't been the case, they had never got the chance, because they were attached to him. Just because he had been in their lives he had put them inherently at risk and Lisa had paid the ultimate price. Dean would never forgive himself for that, not as long as he lived. Lisa's death was on him and him alone.
Drummin' his fingers along the steering wheel, Dean waited for Ben to come out of his friend, Scott's, house. While it made him nervous that Ben was hanging out with a werewolf, Ben had reassured him that Scott wasn't a threat. Dean had grown to learn that there was a lot of grey areas in this job, that it wasn't so black and white like his Dad had taught him it was. Not ever supernatural being was evil or a monster, there were some that were just tryin' their best, just like everyone else in this godforshaken world. It took a lot for Dean to trust Cas initially, but after a while, he had grown to be one of the people he trusted the most in this world. Which reminded him, he needed to talk to Cas soon, make sure he was alright. He hadn't heard from the angel in a hot minute, so he was hoping everything was okay with him. Cas was family and he wanted to make sure he was still alive and kickin.'
Damn angels and their disappearing acts. It was infuriating, especially with Lucifer still on the loose.
A few minutes after texting Ben that he was there, his son came out of the house and got into the car. 'Hey dad, what's up?' Man, he would never get over hearing Ben call him that. "Hey Kiddo, just wanted to spend some time with ya. Maybe grab some grub, play some pool? What do ya say?" He questioned as he put the Impala into drive and drove off, heading towards down. Dean didn't have much idea on what the hell the two would do, but he just wanted to spend some quality time with his son, and hopefully, they wouldn't encounter any hunts along the way. Just one normal day.
That's all he was askin' for.

Ben had spent a long time growing up with just his mom in his life. He had always been curious about his dad and after Dean moved in with him Ben had felt sure that there was a connection there between them even though his mom had said time and time again that Dean wasn’t his dad. Ben had felt Dean’s presence missing from his life after Castiel took away his memories of Dean but as time went on he had started to remember small details even if he didn’t remember everything. Now those memories had been given back to him and Ben was grateful for that. He understood why his dad had decided to leave and he didn’t hold it against him, he never would, but now they were back in each other’s lives and had been for years now and Ben knew that he wouldn’t want it any other way. Their lives might not be normal but Ben knew what it was like to be completely alone in the world and he knew that he didn’t want to go back to that again if he could help it. His dad’s suggestion to hang out had come out of the blue but Ben had known that there was no way he was going to turn him down. He knew that it was perhaps a little strange having his dad pick him up from Scott’s house but Ben was open about the fact that some of his friends were supernatural and when it came to his friends he never tried to hide the fact that he and his family were hunters. Ben knew that not all supernaturals were evil and he had learned a long time ago to judge people for who they were rather than what they were. He hadn’t just found his family in Mystic Falls, he had found friends and a place where he belonged as well so he knew that he really couldn’t ask for anything more than that. There was a part of Ben that had wondered if there was something going on when the text had come through from his dad asking if he wanted to get lunch but as he said he just wanted to spend some time together, Ben felt a smile touch his lips. “Sounds good to me although you’d better not be a sore loser this time,” Ben teased. To be honest it didn’t really matter to Ben what they did as long as they got to spend some time together. Ben was often busy with school and they didn’t hunt together as often as they could but Ben knew that he wouldn’t be surprised if that was because his dad didn’t want to worry about him at the same time. “So how’s everything going?” he asked, his eyes on the road as his dad drove them in the direction of town. ━ i’ll keep fighting ... till i got nothing left ━
DEAN had a lot of regrets in life, more than he probably let on. But the one thing he never regretted was finding out Ben was his son. Finding out that he had a son was by far one of the biggest shocks to his life, something he never expected to happen in his life. Hunters didn’t get the chance to live the cookie cutter life normal people did. It just wasn’t in the cards for people like him, who lived this kind of lifestyle. Dean had tried that life out before, and it didn’t end well for anyone involved - especially not Ben or Lisa. Neither should have ended up in the crosshairs, he had tried his damnest to make sure that didn’t happen, but he hadn’t tried hard enough. He hadn’t protected them like he should have and he beat himself up everyday because of that. But there wasn’t anything he could do about the past now, all he could do was try and move forward. Which he had. He had Ben in his life now, his own flesh and blood, and even despite his initial hesitations about Ben being a hunter, Dean had seen how good of a hunter his son was. But more than that, he knew just how stubborn Ben was, because he got that from him. It didn’t matter what he had said, he knew there wouldn’t be changing Ben’s mind. Not with this. So all he could do was watch him carefully and support him the best he could.
And he would support his son. In any way he could.
Dean had built a life for himself in Mystic Falls, more of a life than he had ever dreamed of having. With the life he lived, it just wasn’t something he had ever hoped to have. And yet, he had built this life and was making a home for himself here in Virginia. A long ways away from where he had hoped to build a life - Kansas. But regardless, he was glad he and Sam were drawn to this town, because he had gained so much more than he ever expected to.
And with that, he made sure to keep in contact with his son, to spend time with him as much as he could. After everything that happened with Ben and with him dying in his arms, he never wanted that to happen ever again. Hell, he still had nightmares about it, about the deja vu he experienced when his son took his last breath in his arms, because it was exactly like the first time Sam had died, when he died in his arms years ago. It was uncanny and not something he wanted to go through ever again, nor would he ever let Ben get himself into situations like that ever again. He couldn’t take the chance of losing Ben again. That night had broken him in more ways than he could count. Losing your brother was one thing, but losing your child was something entirely else. Which is why he made the point to spend so much time with Ben when he could.
Then again, this little hang out probably seemed completely out of the blue to Ben, but he knew he wouldn’t turn down a chance to spend some time together. Once Ben was in the car, Dean took off down the road and all but scoffed at Ben’s comment. “Me? A sore loser? Please, I’m anything but a sore loser.”He replied sarcastically, as he drove. Well, he kinda was a sore loser, but he wasn’t about to admit that, especially not to his son. ‘So how’s everything going?’ Ben asked, and Dean glanced over at him before returning his eyes to the road. “Everything is going alright, believe it or not. Still on the hunt for Lucifer, but he’s still MIA at the moment. Things have been… quiet, lately. It’s more suspicious than anything, especially in a town like this.” He explained, laying it all out on the table. He wasn’t one to hold things back from Ben anymore. After what happened to him, he had made a promise to Ben and to himself to not hold anything back, to tell him the truth about what was going on. Because he knew if he didn’t, that Ben would find out eventually and things wouldn’t go as planned if he found out from someone other than him.
“What about you though? How’s everything going?” He asked, glancing over at him for a brief moment before returning his eyes to the road.

It had been years since Ben had found his dad but the truth was that even now he still considered himself to be pretty lucky. He knew why Dean had taken off, he had wanted to make sure that Ben and his mom had the chance at having a normal life but life never would have been completely normal for Ben. He was one of Azazel’s Special Children and that meant that he was always going to find his way into this life one way or another. As it was, he had taught himself how to hunt and he had learned as much as he could from other hunters along the way as well. He hadn’t been surprised by what was going on when Azazel gathered them all together like the others were, he hadn’t known exactly what was going to happen but he had at least been able to try and protect the others as best he could. It hadn’t worked in the end and he’d had to rely on Henrik to bring them back but Ben was still doing his best to hunt and uphold the family legacy while balancing a normal life alongside it. He wasn’t too sure what his dad thought about who his friends were, one was a True Alpha, others were werewolves, vampires and other supernaturals but one thing Ben had learned over the years was how to keep an open mind and he knew that his dad was at least trying to do the same now. To Ben it was more who a person was that mattered as opposed to what they were and he knew that his opinion was never going to change. There was a time when Ben had felt like a burden on his dad but since he died and his dad had him brought back, they had been spending a lot more time together. They didn’t hunt together that often these days and Ben knew that it had something to do with the fact that his dad always worried more about him than the hunt but there were times like these when they were able to just eat together and hang out and Ben knew that he was lucky. He never wanted to make things difficult for his dad and Ben knew that Dean had wanted him to use his old surname rather than Winchester so he wouldn’t become a target but the truth was that Ben was proud to be a Winchester and he was beyond proud of his dad so he knew that he wasn’t going to hide that. That didn’t mean that he couldn’t still tease him about being a sore loser, though, and he couldn’t help but laugh as his dad spoke. “We both know that’s a lie, you hate it,” Ben chuckled. They could both be a little competitive when they wanted to be but that just made it more interesting as far as Ben was concerned. “I know what you mean, whenever it gets like this it feels like it’s just the calm before the storm,” he nodded. Mystic Falls was a beacon for the supernatural for some reason and had been since before Ben had moved there. He had never been able to get to the bottom of why that was but there was always something going on and when things were quiet, that was why he tended to start worrying. As his dad turned the question back onto him, Ben thought about it for a moment. “Not bad. School is getting a bit intense with finals and graduation coming up but we’re all helping each other through it and I saved a girl on a hunt yesterday,” he shrugged. “I can’t wait for school to be over, I just don’t know what I’ll do after that.” He knew he would still stay in touch with his friends after graduation and that would be easy enough since they all lived in town but he knew that he didn’t want to hunt fulltime like his dad did. Ben had grown used to having a balance between hunting and living a normal life and that wasn’t something that he wanted to give up. DEAN WINCHESTER
