Sam Winchester:
After being expelled from the barn by Bobby. Lucifer and Sam fought for control of the vessel. Neither knew to start with where they ended up; one thing was for certain, it wasn't Heaven or Hell. To start with, when they fought, they were both in the Winchester's psyche. For all they knew, they could have been in the middle of the road or on the moon. The fight for dominance went on for what felt like hours due to neither having control nor having power or access to their abilities. Due to Bobby's confidence in the Winchester, he began fighting for control again. This time it was a level playing field in his mind. It was exhausting to both the angel and the human. It all came down to a battle of wills and ultimately the Winchester's love for his family. The power he received to hear that even after all that he had done still Bobby trusted in him, and even if he didn't have faith in himself, it meant the world to him that someone else thought he was redeemable even when he didn't. Lucifer didn't have that. He may have had followers out of fear or due to his reputation, but it wasn't out of loyalty. Lucifer's family didn't care and trust in him to ultimately that he could do the correct thing in the end after all he had done.
Sam was exhausted; it would have been so easy to give it all up and let things play out however they would. But, the Winchester was stubborn. He didn't want to give up control. Sam wanted to be in control to repent for what he had done in his lifetime. He knew he could still be redeemed if he tried now; he had to believe that. He had to have faith in his most challenging moment, not just the good times. Lucifer tried his hardest to make Sammy lose faith, and it had almost worked, but that was the thing with confidence; you had to have it even when you were tested.
Sam didn't know how much time had passed since talking to Bobby. All the things Lucifer had done in his body came flowing to the surface. He saw Kelly Kline, all the people Lucifer had hurt and all the people who would blame him for it. Some of the things he could never repeat. They would haunt him forever, be it in dreams, daydreams or nightmares, but he would blame himself for it. The thing that made Winchester gain control was that he needed to make the world a better place after he all he had done. He had to kill Lucifer once and for all.
One step at a time. The first step would be to gain control, remove the mark and take it one step at a time.
Sam's eyes opened. He was on the floor of an abandoned house. Something about it was familiar. Then it clicked. He knew where he was. He was in the house where he stashed the blade. Sam believed he had control enough to retrieve it and do what had to be done. Sam went to the hearth and removed one of the bricks to find the archangel blade inside. He removed it.
He knew what he would have to do. It would be the most pain he had ever been in, maybe even worse than what he went through in the cage. He could feel Lucifer fighting him from the second he saw the blade. Sam took the blade in his hands and plunged....
He stabbed himself in the stomach where the sigil was and carved. The blade burnt almost as much as Hellfire. He kept going trying to breathe through the pain. Blood was flowing over his fingers, making it harder to keep ahold of the blade. He kept going and kept sawing at his flesh until the mark was gone.
He didn't know if he blacked out from pain or Lucifer leaving him or if the pain became too much. However, he could still feel Lucifer scratching to gain control when he awoke. Sam closed his eyes and thought about the past. The good times he had in his life. This gave him the strength to move on. Lucifer was saying everything he could to convince Sam to stop. Things from 'if you do this, I will kill everyone you know' to 'I will give Dean and Bobby everything they need' even to 'I will bring back everyone you have ever loved and lost, I can make this worthwhile for you'.
Sam would admit he was tempted to see Kevin, Jess, his parents and everyone else that had died but he had moved on but he knew he shouldn't do it. He knew this was the Devil's bargain to stay. Sam knew Lucifer had another vessel to go to so it wouldn't make much difference but he knew what he had to do.
The Winchester focused and went back into his mind to face Lucifer and weaken his grasp on him. When Sam went in he was surprised to be back at Standford in bed. Jess came out of the bathroom and made her way into the bed. She was wearing his favourite top and nothing else. Oh how Sam missed moments like this. Lucifer had used his best memories to get what he wanted. "This could be what you can have again."
He blinked and he was in a restaurant with; his mum, Jess, Dean, Bobby, Kevin, his father, his friends, Brady from school and more. Every seat he looked at he spotted someone guilty about losing or someone he couldn't save. They could all come back. His eyes fell upon Ellen and Jo. "I'm ready to choose." He sighed and closed his eyes.
He opened them to a hand on his shoulder. He turned to see 'Nick'. Lucifer thought he knew what Sam would pick, so he stood there smugly. Only for Sam to press hard onto his side where the sigil was, causing pain to both of them. "Get the fuck out!" He pressed harder making himself wince with pain so much so that when he blacked out again. When he woke up three days later, not only was Lucifer gone but so was the blade. Sam hoped that Lucifer didn't get his hands on it but if it were a demon then he wouldn't have woken up at all and least of all free to get up and leave. The only problem was that he found himself in a hospital when he properly opened his eyes.
No weapon, no belongings nothing in sight. What he didn't know was that he had been muttering his dreams in his sleep; it looked like he had tried to stab himself and he had been dreaming about Lucifer and Hell. In the eyes of the medical professionals, if he was in a psychotic break.
it took Sam two weeks to convince them that he had been mugged and set up. It took a few days more to convince them that his family were religious and that was why he was muttering about Hell and Lucifer. He finally was able to leave in some spare clothes they had managed to find him. He was finally free.
