Luke had been working in various avenues of law enforcement for a long time now so he had a lot of experience under his belt and he knew that there wasn’t anything else that he would rather be doing. His brothers had both found their callings as well, Nick was a doctor and Sean was a firefighter so they had all found something they could do where they could help people. Working alone was what Luke was used to more than anything but he had been partnered up with Danielle and they had soon found that they actually made a really good team. They were able to work together to close more cases than any of the other detectives so the truth was that Luke had missed her during her sabbatical. She had become a good friend to him and he had understood why she had needed some time away but he couldn’t deny that he had missed seeing her around all the time. He cared about Dani, more than he should perhaps, but they had stayed in touch and that had helped. He could have had a temporary partner during that time but he had refused and now he was glad that he had done. The cases had piled up somewhat but now at least things were as they should be and he knew that he wanted to make the most of that while he could. He hadn’t expected Dani to take his words the way she had done, after all the two of them always had banter going back and forth between them. They teased each other and joked around but they never meant anything by it and he certainly hadn’t. He could see that she regretted the way she’d reacted, though, and Luke knew that the last thing he wanted was to end up making things awkward or making her feel worse so he didn’t say anything else. It was clear that there was something going on that Dani didn’t want to talk to him about and when that happened Luke knew better than to press it. Dani always talked to him when she was ready so if she wasn’t ready to do that right now then trying to get her to do so was just a waste of time. Instead he started telling her about the case. There were a few people that they needed to speak to so he knew that it would be much easier to split the workload the same way that they always used to. Nodding as Dani said she knew he hadn’t meant for her to take what he’d said the way she had done, Luke climbed out of the car and together they headed inside. “I bet it feels good getting back into it, huh?” he asked as they walked. Dani was meant to be doing this just as much as he was so he knew that it couldn’t have been easy for her to take that time away completely, he just hoped that it had done her some good. Once they had finished talking to everyone that they’d needed to, Luke caught up with Dani again and they headed back out to the car. “That took longer than I thought. I don’t know about you but I could use a drink, do you want to call it a day and we can go over everything in the morning?” he suggested. DANIELLE COLLIER

━ sorry can't save me now. i'm not okay i feel so scattered ━
DANI had been through so damn much in her life, it was honestly laughable. And she knew she didn't need to take it out on others, especially not Luke. But it was difficult sometimes and with becoming a vampire everything she felt was heightened times a hundred. It felt like her emotions were constantly building until one day she could hold them in any longer and she let them all come out. But she knew if that ever were to happen, the ending results would be disastrous. It would mean her turning off her humanity to not feel the pain anymore. But she knew what that meant and she couldn't bare it if she hurt someone she cared about when she turned it all off. She couldn't do that to Cori or even Luke, anyone really who cared about her. Danielle was already a fireball, she didn't even want to begin to think about the kind of person she would be without her humanity on. So for now, she it would remain on and hopefully there would never come a time where she couldn't bare to keep it on any longer.
'I bet it feels good getting back into it, huh?' Luke asked as the two walked towards the front door of the house. "Like riding a bike." She replied and it was the truth. Danielle had always been meant for this line of work, it was her passion, it was what she was good at. That much was evident since she had been one of the youngest agents to join the F.B.I. Seeing her work, the bureau had quickly taken interest and it had been a literal dream, one she desperately needed given as though her twin brother had died. But like all dreams, that one soon came crashing down the moment Oliver had been taken by that demon possessing him. Her world truly had come crumbling down and her life was sent into a spiral. Danielle didn't think she would ever truly recover from that, even with Cory alive and well. That series of unfortunate events changed her forever and no amount of therapy would help her.
It had taken some time but the two of them had finally finished talking with all of the witnesses they needed to for the case. "They sure were damn eager to tell us everything they knew." She said, a hint of suspicion laced in her words. They seemed almost too eager to tell them what they needed to know. But regardless, they did provide them with good information that would definitely help them with the case, but she wasn't too keen to rule them out as potential suspects either.
'I don’t know about you but I could use a drink, do you want to call it a day and we can go over everything in the morning?' That sounded like a damn good idea and god knows she could use a drink or two. "That sounds like a plan to me. I definitely need a drink." She said as the two walked over to the car. Danielle was thankful Luke thought like her because after the day the two of them just had, she was grateful for his company and it was much welcomed, even though sometimes she didn't exactly show it. She was glad she had Luke in her life, it made this line of work that much more bearable. Hell, it made working for this small town department more bearable. Otherwise she didn't think she would have lasted as long as she did working for the Mystic Falls Police Department.
"To Mystic Grill?"

“It’s good to have you back,” Luke admitted as they headed outside. Over the years he had worked alone much more often than he had work with a partner but working with Danielle was different. They were able to bounce ideas off of each other and they just got each other. Danielle was one of the few people outside his family who knew what he was and Luke knew what she was as well so neither of them had to worry about trying to hide that from each other. He knew that Danielle had been through so much lately and he didn’t blame her for needing to take a break at all but it was still good to feel that old rhythm again. The cases had been piling up lately because it always took longer when there was only one person working through them and there seemed to be a high amount of new cases in general lately anyway. Luke had known when he and his family moved to Mystic Falls that the town was literally a beacon for the supernatural so there had always been plenty going on to keep him busy but right now it was on a whole other level so he knew that it would be good to have a second pair of eyes look over everything. “That’s what I thought too. They seemed too happy to offer up the information, it almost felt like they were trying to give us enough leads that we wouldn’t think that they had anything to do with it even though they had just as much of an opportunity as anyone else,” he nodded. “You didn’t even need to compel them, it’s never that easy,” he added as they headed in the direction of the car. It all seemed to be far too clear cut at the moment and that alone was enough to make Luke suspicious. He was used to the answer being an unexpected one in Mystic Falls, he knew that it couldn’t be that simple this time. “I thought you might say that,” Luke chuckled as they reached the car and he climbed into the passenger’s side once more. Danielle had driven them there and even though Luke was more used to being the one doing the driving whenever he went out with someone he knew that he wasn’t going to argue this time around. Going for a drink after work had become somewhat of a tradition of sorts for the two of them so Luke was glad that that much hadn’t changed. “Why not, I’m starving so we could always grab something to eat if you’re up for it too,” he suggested. They normally ended up heading to either the Grill or Campbell’s since Olivia was family but this felt more like a day to head to the Grill and perhaps even have a game of pool afterwards as well. “Got to celebrate your first day back.”DANIELLE COLLIER

DANI smiled softly at Luke's comment on her being back. It felt good to be back in the grand swing of things. She had been out of the game far too long, and for what? What did she actually have to show for her absence? Not a damn thing. Her journey across the country in search for answers on Oliver was useless and disappointing. She didn't get any answers, no new leads. Whatever leads she did find ended up being pointless. They didn't ever lead anywhere, just dead lead after dead lead. Dani was beginning to grow more and more hopeless as the days progressed, as if she would never find out what happened to Oliver, where he had been all this time... hell, if he were even alive. A part of her wished she had some type of answer, even if it wasn't a good one, because at least she would know for sure. If he were dead, at least she would know definitively where he was instead of left wondering all the damn time. Because if she were being honest, it was damn exhausting.
Regardless, being back in the swing of things at the station made for a great distraction. Plus, she knew that Luke would appreciate her being back given as though the cases had been piling up and with one person working them it took way longer than it should for case turnover. Thankfully though, she was back and could help take some of the load off of Luke. She owed him a lot over the years so she was glad the two had been partnered up when she had transferred here. It made things even better considering they each knew what the other was, so there was never any need to keep things from each other. There weren't any secrets between them that would hinder their work performance, or friendship for that matter.
The so called 'witnesses' had been all too happy to give them information, anything they needed at all actually. The leads they offered up felt almost too good to be true, and she was glad that Luke felt the same way as she had. "Like you said, it's never that easy. Something isn't right." Which means that the two of them would need to do some more investigating, probably some surveillance on their so called witnesses, who could very well turn out to be their perpetrators. It was not as clear cut as they were making it out to be, so of course the two of them walked out of that interview with more questions than answers. Never was their job so simple, especially not in a town like Mystic Falls. Then again, it never had been in her entire career.
'I thought you might say that.' Luke said with a chuckle as he got into the passenger's side of her car as she got into the driver's seat and started the car. It had been somewhat of a tradition of theirs to grab drinks after a day of working on cases, something that wasn't about to change now. Of course she was also starving, but not for the food Luke was thinking of, although she would never turn down a good burger and fries. "Definitely need some food, both kinds. It's actually been a minute since I've fed and I'm feeling very peckish." She retorted as she began driving in the direction of the Grill. 'Got to celebrate your first day back.' Luke said and she snorted, shaking her head. "It's definitely not anything worth celebrating, but I won't say no to kicking your ass in pool." She teased, pulling into a parking spot adjacent to the Grill's entrance. The two always played a game of pool over some drinks, so might as well keep up with the tradition. While she didn't necessarily feel like celebrating or really socializing she knew she needed to, otherwise she was going to drive herself crazy, and not to mention this was a good distraction from everything going on in her life at the moment. Plus, she enjoyed spending time with Luke.

Luke didn’t mind working alone, in fact he had always preferred it before Danielle came along, but he couldn’t deny that he had missed having her around. He understood why she had needed to leave but it hadn’t been the same without her and now he was glad that it was easy to fall back into their old rhythm. She was one of the few people in Mystic Falls that he had trusted with what he was and she had done the same with him. They worked well together because they got each other and that was something that Luke knew better than to take for granted. He still had his family in his life but other than that most of the people who had come into his life over the years had died a long time ago and that was something that he was doing his best to deal with. Mystic Falls was different, it was full of people who were supernatural and that was a change of pace as far as Luke was concerned. He always kept his head down and avoided drawing too much attention to what he was and that hadn’t changed. The interviews that day had been far too easy, everyone they had spoken to had been too willing to offer up information and that was rarely how it worked anywhere, let alone in Mystic Falls. It was enough to make Luke suspicious and he could see that it was the same for Dani. “It isn’t but we’ll figure it out tomorrow just like we always do,” Luke shrugged. “We won’t let whoever did this get away with it.” They had always made a good team and now Dani was back it felt like they were still just as good together. They had a high success rate when it came to their cases, something that Luke had managed to keep up on his own while Dani was gone, and he knew that it would be that much easier to keep that up now that he had Dani to collaborate with again. They were great at bouncing ideas off of each other and that was something that he had really missed. Another thing he had missed was the two of them grabbing a drink after work. It was something that they had done all the time before Dani left and that had often led to them getting something to eat while they were there as well. He hadn’t known if Dani was hungry or not but as she spoke, he found himself nodding. “You might be able to get something to help on both fronts. The owner is a vampire and she’s very discreet so if you need blood I know she’ll help,” he offered. Evangeline was another person who knew what he was, their paths had crossed in the past when she’d been having some trouble with things at the group home she had opened up and he knew that she wouldn’t hesitate in making sure that Dani had what she needed. As she said that her first day back wasn’t worth celebrating but that she wouldn’t say no to beating him at pool, Luke pretended to look shocked for a moment as he placed his hand over his heart. “Here I was thinking I would even be nice and pay for everything tonight and you go and say something hurtful like that. I don’t know what I was thinking,” he teased as a laugh escaped his lips, knowing that he would still pay if Dani would let him anyway. “Game on,” he grinned. “For the record, you being back is worth celebrating,” he added as he climbed out of the car once Dani had parked up. “I’ve missed you.”DANIELLE COLLIER

BACK before Dani met Luke, she had never had the desire to have a partner, preferred it even, and in many ways, still did. It was nothing against Luke, by any standards, but more something that she was used to. It was comforting to be alone and in a lot of ways turned into a coping mechanism for her over the years. After the death of her parents, and then her twin brother, and then Oliver, and hell, even herself... she couldn't take much more loss, especially after she became a vampire. Everything after she transitioned was heightened times a thousand... a million even. Her grief and sorrow felt even worse, like the entire world was truly on her shoulders. She felt the weight of the world every single day, even when there was no reason for her to feel that way, but after the death of her twin brother and when she lost the only true anchor in her life... things became more difficult for her. Being alone was just easier, for everyone's sake, and hell, for her own too. You couldn't feel loss if you didn't have anyone else to lose.
And that was her mindset for a long while, still even is in a lot of different ways, But when she found Luke and eventually Cory again, her life felt a little bit more normal than it once had. She felt normal, for the first time in a long time, her life felt worth living. Which was saying a lot considering everything that she had been through. That time of working had helped her find herself, helped regain whatever sanity she clung to, but now, working this case with Luke again, it felt right. Her and Luke meshed well together, and the two actually had the highest solve rate in the department. The flowed so well actually it was like they could anticipate each other's next moves, which made solving cases all the better, because she had been forced to partner with people before who didn't know their ass from their own elbow. Those people made Dani want to work alone even more so than better. All they did was slow her down, but not Luke, and for that she was grateful.
The case they were currently working on didn't make much sense and from the interviews they had today, that proved to be even more the case than before. The so called 'witnesses' had been way too forthcoming with information and were almost too eager to give them almost exactly what they were asking for. It was rare, especially in this town, and she was glad Luke thought the same as she did when they left. 'It isn’t but we’ll figure it out tomorrow just like we always do. We won’t let whoever did this get away with it.' Ah, always the optimist, but in a lot of ways she was thankful for it, because here lately, she had been feeling nothing but negativity. "Definitely, we can't let our record falter now can we?" She teased, shoving him lightly. Dani, always the one to make jokes in awkward situations she wanted out of. But honestly, she was glad to be able to joke again, especially with Luke.
Once at the grill, she knew she needed to get something to eat, and not the kind of food many would think. So when Luke mentioned the fact that the owner of this place was a vampire, it made it feel relieved. "Oh thank god. I bet she has some bags in the back, I'll ask when I see her." She said as she parked, looking around the parking lot, more in search of the owner than anything else as she was absolutely starving. Normally she wouldn't let herself get this hungry, but with how busy she had been, it kind slipped away from her. The sound of Luke placing his hand over his heart in a mocking manner, looking 'hurt' that she mentioned she wouldn't mind beating him at pool. 'Here I was thinking I would even be nice and pay for everything tonight and you go and say something hurtful like that. I don’t know what I was thinking. Game on,' he grinned and she laughed. "You should know better than to think I won't give it my all in a competition." When it came to competitions, Dani was all for them, she thrived off friendly competition. Hell, who was she kidding, she thrived off any competition.
'For the record, you being back is worth celebrating. I’ve missed you.' As they got out of the car, she turned to look at Luke at his comment and smiled softly. "I've missed you too," she said earnestly as the two headed into the bar to get some friendly competition, some food, and some long overdue conversation between old friends.

Luke had been working on his own for the most part ever since Dani left and the truth was that it hadn’t been quite the same. He had helped a few others out with their cases but he had missed having the banter that always passed back and forth between them and having someone else to bounce theories off of always helped as well. He hadn’t been looking for a partner when Dani had come along, Luke had grown used to working on his own but the two of them had hit it off and the truth was that working and spending so much time together felt right. Luke wasn’t used to letting people get too close to him, he’d had his heart broken more times than he cared to admit and that had left him more than a little guarded but with Dani he was able to let that guard down a bit and just be himself. Luke knew that he could have continued ageing at any time but Nick and Lauren had decided that they wanted more than a mortal lifetime together and Luke knew that he wasn’t going to leave either of them behind. Instead he had decided to stay as he was and that meant that he was sure to outlive most of the people who came and went from his life. Dani was a vampire now which meant that with any luck he wouldn’t have to worry about that with her but he had lost so many people he once knew and the truth was that he really wasn’t in a hurry to do that again. It was easy to fall back into the old rhythm that he and Dani had and he was starting to realise just how much he had missed it. It felt good to be working a case together again and Luke nudged Dani back playfully as she said that they couldn’t let their record falter. “I hate to break it to you but you’ve got a lot of catching up to do. I’ve been keeping our record up on my own while you were gone,” he teased, his smile playful as he looked over at her. Ever since they’d started working together they’d had a high solve rate and Luke had done his best to maintain that on his own while Dani was gone. He had made his way through a lot of cases in her absence but he really was glad to have her back and from the way she seemed to be happy to tease him just like she always did, he had a feeling that she felt the same. “I’m sure she will, don’t worry,” Luke nodded as Dani said she bet that Evangeline had some blood bags in the back. He knew that Evangeline didn’t tend to go broadcasting what she was but he’d worked a case there while Dani was gone and had figured it out so he had a feeling that the woman wouldn’t mind helping his partner out. It was clear that Dani really needed to eat and it looked like it was both food and blood that she needed so at least she could get both at the Grill. Luke couldn’t deny that he was glad he didn’t have to worry about needing blood himself but it was something that he knew he was going to have to think about now that Dani was back. As Dani said that he should have known better than to think that she wouldn’t give it her all, Luke couldn’t help but laugh. “I knew you would give it everything you have but you’re still going to lose,” he chuckled. “I’ll make you a deal, loser buys dinner,” he suggested, his expression turning playful as he looked over at his partner. Soon enough they were out of the car and heading towards the Grill and Luke felt his expression soften as Dani said she’d missed him too and he held the door open for her so she could enter first. IN a lot of ways, Danielle was thankful to be back in Mystic Falls. Coming back to this town had given her back all that she had lost and more. Cory had come back, something she never thought would happen. That alone had been a gift. It had caused her cruel and lonely world to turn into one that she thought of as forgiving and just. The universe had given her another chance with her twin brother and it was one she would never take for granted. Hell, coming to this town had also given her back Luke, one of her one and only partners in this line of work. Never in her career had she ever agreed to take on a partner, she fought back against it constantly. Higher ups knew better than to try and stick someone with her because at the end of the day, Danielle worked better alone. And that had proven to be the case time and time again… until she met Luke.
Luke was by far one of the best things about this job. He got her, he knew how she liked to work and how she liked to solve cases. She was a no bullshit kinda detective and he was too, he knew how to get things done. Their banter kept things light in a world that was filled with darkness and chaos. And not to mention the two didn’t have secrets between one another. Once Luke found out what she truly was and when she found out what he was, things between them were so much easier. Not having to carry this secret all on her own made living life as a vampire that much easier. Not to mention that neither one of them had to worry about the other succumbing to a bullet wound while on the job or having to worry about the other getting assaulted trying to deal with criminals. Having that burden lifted allowed for them to dive deep into their caseload and get things done.
Which is why they had one of the best, if not the best, solve record in the entire department. Which, honestly, wasn’t saying much.
Even with being gone as long as she had, her and Luke were able to pick up right where they left off. It was nice being back into a routine, well, as much as a routine as they could get given their circumstances. Danielle laughed as Luke nudged her playfully, mentioning how he kept their record in tip top shape while she had been absent. “And I appreciate that. We can’t have anyone taking our throne.” She teased as they walked side by side. She was thankful for a partner who didn’t let the caseload pile up in absence of the other. She had experienced that before in other departments and agencies and that was a nightmare she never wanted to experience again.
Danielle let out an audible snort as Luke said she was going to lose. “You wish!” He knew as well as anyone she was fiercely competitive and that she would never back down from a wager. Upon Luke’s offer, she nodded, grinning ear to ear. ”Deal.” She agreed as the two entered The Grill, the two of them heading up to the bar with Luke following closely behind. Sitting on one of the barstools, she knew exactly what she wanted: food, a good drink, and some friendly competition. But first things first: getting some blood in her system before she completely lost it. Thankfully she had a good overall control over her thirst, but one could never be too careful, especially in this town.

Luke had never been very good at working with a partner, being a kitsune and living as long as he had meant that he had to keep secrets from everyone around him and that tended to take a toll after a while. He always had to be so careful not to let anyone know what he was because he knew that could get not just him but the rest of his family killed as well and that made letting people get close to him pretty difficult. It wasn’t made any easier by the fact that he’d built up walls to protect himself years ago after losing so many different women that he had fallen for in one way or another. Luke had realised a long time ago that he was going to outlive most of the people who came into his life and even though he had always longed for a relationship like the one that his brother had with Lauren, deep down he wasn’t so sure that it was on the cards for him given his track record. Instead he tended to throw himself into his work and Dani always made that so much easier. He had coped on his own while she was gone and he had refused to have another partner because he knew that he would never find another one who got him like Dani did but he couldn’t deny that he was glad that she was back. They just got each other in a way that he hadn’t found in a long time and they knew what each other was which meant that they really didn’t have to worry about keeping secrets from each other. Instead they could just focus on getting the work done and Luke knew that their solve rate really did speak for itself. It really hadn’t been the same without her and now that she was back it was so easy to fall back into old habits again. The case they had worked that day was intense but Dani made it better and now they had finished work they were free to leave it all behind them until tomorrow when it would start all over again. “You’ve got that right, we’ve got a reputation to uphold,” Luke chuckled. Even when Dani had left he had known that he wasn’t going to let their reputation slip and even though it had been hard going handling their case load on his own, he liked to think he hadn’t done too bad a job without his partner to bounce theories off of. “You keep telling yourself that,” he grinned as Dani spoke again. As she agreed to the deal, a smirk formed on Luke’s face. “I hope you’ve got plenty of money, I’m starving,” he teased as they headed inside and made their way in the direction of the bar. Sitting down, he flagged down the bartender and waited for Dani to place her order before doing the same. “So, are you glad to be back?” he asked as he turned to look at her. DANIELLE COLLIER

DANIELLE appreciated being able to have such a great partner, it made working easier. Plus, her and Luke knew what one another was. Having that secret out in the open took a lot of weight off of her shoulders. Before she met Luke, she had worked alone solely. She never took on a partner and would downright refuse when one was offered to her. It was just easier that way and it was a way to make sure that no one got hurt because of her. Not to mention the fact that most of the time she worked outside of the law. Compulsion wasn’t exactly a legal process, nor was it one that was known to ordinary humans. She couldn’t exactly put compulsion in a police report. That’s a sure fire way to end up in the looney bin. Thankfully, admin never questioned her about not having a partner. Was it dangerous being without one? Absolutely. But then again, Danielle wasn’t exactly like every other cop.
It had been a while since she’s been back in a routine again and boy did it feel good. Danielle never had that, routine. Every day was different and she usually never knew what to expect. That kind of lifestyle could get incredibly tiresome but it was one she was used to. One she had grown accustomed to. But here lately, she had gotten into a solid routine at work. Getting back into the swing of things with Luke felt good. The two had picked right up where they had left off. It was like she never left in the first place - which, she was sure the Sheriff appreciated. The less work she had to do the better.
Having finished their case work for today, the two had decided to blow off some steam. Which, for her, was incredibly needed. ’You’ve got that right, we’ve got a reputation to uphold.’ Danielle laughed, the two of them did hold the case completion record in the station. Then again, they had some supernatural tendencies that helped them solve cases that the other detectives didn’t have. Was that cheating? Possibly, but Danielle was always a firm believer in using all the tools in your toolbox, which included using her compulsion to get confessions and getting witnesses to talk.
‘You keep telling yourself that. I hope you’ve got plenty of money, I’m starving.’ Danielle rolled her eyes and playfully shoved him as they headed inside of the bar and sat down at the bar. Luke flagged down the bartender and she ordered herself a drink as she relaxed. Elbows resting on the bar counter she turned to Luke as he asked if she was glad to be back. “I am. It’s nice to be back in a routine. But in a lot of ways it’s frustrating,” she began, “I didn’t find the answers I was searching for and just did a lot of running around like a chicken with its head cut off.” She explained honestly. Every lead she followed ended up being a dead end. No matter where she turned to, she never got the answers she wanted. It got to the point where she had to throw in the towel and return. If not for herself, for her twin and for Luke.
“What did you do while I was gone? Besides work, of course.” She truly wanted to know how Luke had been, what he’d done when he wasn’t working on maintaining their caseload. Danielle knew she needed to socialize more, make more friends and just live her life. She hadn’t done that, hadn’t really lived. Her life had been one constant headache, even growing up it was like that. Turning into a vampire and chasing after a ghost had definitely put her life on hold. But maybe… maybe she could accept the fact that Oliver was gone and wasn’t coming back, live her life. No. No she couldn’t do that no matter how much she knew it was what Ollie had wanted for her. She’d never give up on him. She wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she did.

Luke had always enjoyed working with Dani, the two of them got each other in a way that he hadn’t had with anyone he’d worked with in a long time and it always made the work they did that much easier. In all honesty it was good having someone that he could be himself with without having to worry about keeping what he was from them. Luke had been alive for a long time and he had grown used to keeping what he was a secret but it could get a little exhausting at times. He didn’t have to worry about that with Dani, she knew that he was a kitsune and he knew that she was a vampire so it worked out well for the two of them. He had confided in her after finding out what she was so she would know that he was someone who could be trusted and it had been that way between them ever since. When she left he had completely understood but it had meant that his own workload had been increased while he tried to juggle all the cases they worked along with the paperwork alone. Luke knew that he could have agreed to have another partner but the truth was that if that person wasn’t Dani then he wasn’t interested. He usually preferred to work alone and she was the one exception to that. In the past any partners he’d had hadn’t really lasted too long and a few of them had been completely incompetent so he’d never had a hard time getting his superiors to stop trying to give him a partner when he threw every one of them back at him. Luke knew there were some who might think he was too picky but living as long as he had meant that he was able to figure out quite quickly who was a good fit and who wasn’t and he didn’t see the point in wasting his time working with someone when he knew that it wasn’t going to work out. The hours Luke had been working lately were no joke at all, his brother liked to joke that Luke spent all his time working these days but Luke knew that Nick was right. He went home to sleep but other than that his time was mostly spent working. He knew that it wasn’t particularly healthy but it was what he’d had to do in order to try and keep his head above water and he didn’t regret it one bit. He and Dani held the record for the most solved cases and that was a record that Luke had wanted to keep even when he was working on his own. Luke couldn’t help but laugh as Dani shoved him and he shoved her back playfully in return, he knew that she was only messing around so he didn’t take it to heart but to be honest it was good to have her back so that they could joke around like that. It had been far too long since they had last done this and considering they’d both decided to clock off at a decent time that way, Luke knew that it was about time that they had the chance to unwind for a while. “Unfortunately that’s the way it goes sometimes. You might not have found the answers you wanted this time but don’t give up, they’re out there somewhere,” Luke offered. He knew that Dani needed some closure and he honestly hoped that she would get it sooner or later. It was difficult to move on when you had unanswered questions, that was something that Luke knew all too well, and he really wouldn’t wish it on anyone. As Dani asked what he had been up to while she was gone aside from work, Luke’s expression turned a little sheepish. “To be honest most of my time has been spent working,” Luke admitted. “It didn’t seem to matter that you weren’t there, they just kept piling the cases on top of the ones I was already working. They tried palming some of the other detectives off on me as partners but they weren’t you so I insisted on working alone,” he shrugged. It wasn’t easy trying to keep on top of their caseload on his own but he had never been afraid to put the hours in and he knew that had definitely worked in his favour this time around. “Other than that my sister-in-law tried setting me up on a couple of dates but they didn’t work out,” he added. His heart hadn’t been in it and the women he’d gone out with had been able to tell so it really hadn’t surprised him at all. “I’m more interested in what you’ve been up to. You said you didn’t find the answers you were looking for but did you find out anything?” he asked, hoping that she might have found out a little about what had happened even if she hadn’t managed to get all the answers.
