Summer was upon them and Josie knew that she wanted to make the most of it while it lasted but at the same time she knew that she didn’t want to be sat around doing nothing for the whole summer. Ever year she tried to do something a little different with some of her free time and give something back to the community and that year she had found herself struggling to decide what she wanted to do but then she had remembered one of her friends telling her about how they had ended up taking in an animal from the local shelter. Josie had always loved animals but with so many of them living under one roof she had never had a pet of her own. She couldn’t blame her parents, there were ten of them living together and while the house was more than big enough for all of them they all had their own lives and adding a pet to the mix probably wasn’t the best idea. The only experience that Josie had with animals was with her friends’ pets but that didn’t make her love them any less. There were other things that she could have done like she could have seen if they needed any help around the group home that had opened up recently or she could have asked Gabi if her dads had needed some help at the adoption agency but she had done similar things that in the past and she knew that she wanted to go for something a little different this time around. She had no idea what she wanted to do after she graduated yet or what she wanted to major in when she went to college but she knew that she wanted to get as much experience in as she could before she got there to try and make things a little easier. Of course there was no guarantee that they were actually going to need some help when she got there but she hoped that they wouldn’t turn her away. She had lined up a meeting with the owner of the shelter that day since she had thought that it would be better than just showing up and as she made her way through town she couldn’t deny that she was nervous. She wanted this to go well but she knew that there was only one way to find out. Either way she knew that she wanted to find a balance between volunteering and spending time with her friends and family the same way she always did and she hoped that she would be able to do so again that year. Reaching the animal shelter, she took a deep breath before pushing the door open. She was nervous but she knew that she shouldn’t be so she tried to bury those nerves as she made her way inside. “Hi, I’m looking for Dr Grey. Is she around?”RHIANNON GREY

Summers had just been the coming and going of the brutal heat for a while. When she was younger there’d always been that burst of excitement at being out of school for a couple of months. Not having to deal with the snide comments of the others kids about her dad, getting to spend the majority of her time with her parents and the dogs. Rhiannon supposed that had started to change when her dad had run and some of the golden glow of those long days of freedom had worn off. Once she’d enlisted the division between the seasons had shrunk down to little more than the weather. How brutal were the temperatures going to be wherever they deployed. Scorching hot days, cold nights, an unrelenting heat that had left her skin roasted brighter than her hair, despite the slick of sunblock.
Stepping out of her truck out front of the shelter, Rhiannon was glad that the division was back. Without it she might’ve been stretched too thin by her partner’s trip out of town. Either the clinic or the shelter she could run alone but both would’ve been a tough order without help. As Ptolemy jumped out beside her, she ran her hand over his head, tilting her face back for a moment to drink in some of that late summer warmth. The clinic was in good hands for a few hours, both Kari and Scott on site to handle things so she could hear over here to give an induction of sorts to a new volunteer.
Green eyes scanned the parking lot as she headed for the office. No sign of any cars she didn’t know yet. No ‘there’s someone waiting for you’ from the volunteer who was already at the reception desk either, just a chipper greeting that Rhiannon returned with a grin. ”Morning. I’m gonna be in the office until the new volunteer arrives. Give me a shout when she does?” They’d all had the email the night before anyway but it never hurt to give a reminder, even if it was already being waived off. Trust hadn’t always been easy to find but the longer she spent in Mystic Falls the more Rhiannon believed she was getting a grip on being able to do that again – and the more she believed she was getting a grip on her own abilities.
In a town where the weird and wonderful seemed like a daily occurrence being able to read minds didn’t seem such a nightmare. It did mean trying to lock her abilities down more to avoid seeing what she didn’t want to but Mystic Falls had already made up for it in a hundred different ways and at least at the shelter most of the time the only minds she was dealing with were of the animal sort. Not even those penetrated this far into the building.
While Ptolemy had settled in his basket in her office she’d gone to work, signing off on invoices for the shelter’s expenses for a mind number twenty minutes before the call came through from the counter. As she pushed away from her desk and opened her office door the volunteer at the desk was already putting the phone down. Rhiannon caught sight of the young brunette at the counter and made her way over, hand already extended. ”Hi. You must be Josie. I’m Dr. Grey – Rhiannon. Welcome to the shelter.” If the rumours that had shot around the shelter yesterday were right then Josie was the somehow attached to the Gilberts, who seemed to be one of Mystic Falls’ Founding Families. ”Have you spent much around animals before?” Most of what happened at the shelter could be taught anyway, even if the girl hadn’t. Heart was what always made the difference and in volunteering in the first place it seemed like Josie already had that.

Josie knew that she really shouldn’t be nervous about her first day volunteering at the animal shelter but the truth was that she couldn’t help it. She had done plenty of volunteering over the years but this was different, she loved animals and she knew that she really wanted this to go well. Josie would be the first to admit that she didn’t have a huge amount of experience with animals considering that when she was growing up her house had already been busy enough with all of them living under one roof without adding a pet to the mix as well but she had always had a soft spot for animals so she hoped that this would give her the chance to learn more about them. She had spent plenty of time around her friends’ pets and that had helped but if she was honest she had always wanted one of her own. She knew that she should just go ahead and ask her parents but it never seemed like the right time. Deep down Josie knew that she might end up falling in love with one or more of the animals while she was working there and would want to take them home with her but she knew that she would cross that bridge when she came to it. Her dad had been able to see that she was nervous and he’d offered to drive her to the shelter but she had opted to walk instead so that she could clear her head first. Josie knew that she wanted to make a good impression and she hoped that her first day would go well. She hadn’t taken up her dad’s offer of driving her there but she had promised to text him when she finished so he could pick her up and they could catch up before heading home and the truth was that she was looking forward to it. For now though she had something else to think about and she took a deep breath before pushing open the door. No sooner had she asked if Dr Grey was around than a woman was emerging and Josie felt a smile touch her lips as she reached out and shook the woman’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, thank you for giving me this chance,” she said sincerely. She knew that she was only volunteering so the woman could turn around at any time and say that her help wasn’t needed any longer but Josie knew that she wanted to make the most of her time there while she had the chance. “I’ve spent quite a bit of time around my friends’ pets but I’ve never actually had one of my own,” she admitted, knowing that it would be better to be honest than to hide the truth. “I’ve always loved animals though and I’d like to help in any way I can,” she added. “Is that okay?” she asked, honestly hoping that it would be. She had wanted to help others for as long as she could remember and just like her parents had given a lot of the students at the Salvatore School a second chance when they gave them a place there she wanted to try and help the animals at the shelter get a second chance too. It would have been a miracle if any of her staff would’ve stuck it out with her predecessor. The man had been arrogant and rude, giving nothing but the scut work to those he was supposed to be mentoring instead of giving them the training they needed or deserved. People would only ever be willing to go on that way for so long before they quit, and if Scott had stepped back when he showed such promise - it would’ve been a travesty. She’d lucked out during her training, Rhi knew that. The army had been willing to pay for her training and qualification - the exchange of years in uniform for an education she couldn’t have afforded anywhere else had been worth every day of it - but that wasn’t an opportunity all could take. It was on her to pass all of that along, a responsibility she was definitely willing to take on. Especially if it meant a little weight taken off of shoulders she habitually loaded up far too heavily.
At the shelter the volunteers were her lifeline. They helped clean and care for the animals, they walked them, keeping their lives enriched enough that when folks arrived to find that special animal to adopt they were met with dogs cowering in the corners of their cages or cats so traumatised they would hiss and scratch. Some were geniuses with social media, something she was never going to be some wizard with. They got the animals faces out there, created the sort of stories to go with them that had hearts melting all over town. The place couldn’t have run without them. And there was always room for more.
She could have had twenty volunteers on the books and she still would’ve agreed to the meeting with Josie. There was never going to be enough people who cared to give every animal a home, even in Mystic Falls. With her powers under wraps she hadn’t tripped straight into the girl’s head, but she got enough of a surface read on her to know that Josie was going to be one of the good ones - the ones anxious to do a good job always were. ”You too. I should honestly be thanking you, we can never get enough help around here.” Rhi figured no matter how many hands were on desk she would always find work for them - whatever their skill level was. One red brow arched, the corners of her lips turning up in a smile. ”Not been able to talk your parents into it yet?” That had never been a problem with her mom, although in their house the animals weren’t strictly pets. ”Absolutely,” Rhiannon promised. ” Willingness is always the important part.” Almost everything else could be learned on the job.
Stepping back towards the desk, Rhiannon gestured for Josie to come with her. There was going to be paperwork to fill out afterwards, but she liked to give the volunteers a chance to wade out of the deep end she was about to throw them into before they signed on the dotted line. ”Why don’t you come on through? We can take a tour before we handle the boring part of all the forms.” At least there wasn’t the same level of paperwork that came with every action in the army. ”Any allergies? I’m guessing not since you’re here, but we get all sorts of animals in and it’s good to get a feel for any we may have trouble with. Birds, cats, dogs, lizards … we had a chinchilla for a while last year.” It hadn’t taken long to get him rehomed with a former zoo keeper a few towns over - a big relief for her, the cute animals always went the fastest, but sometimes people had no clue what they were signing themselves up for.
