No one told him about that humanity switch inside of him. Rosie had flipped hers, telling Lawrence to follow suit. Telling him it was exhilarating to feel nothing at all. No fear, no sadness, no happiness. Nothing. She made it look easy and enticing. She told him to just close his eyes, and stop feeling. The pair didn't know what they were doing when they flipped their humanity off, they thought it was temporary and something which could be turned back on at will. Lawrence thought it would just be a few hours of being emotion free.
It turned into almost two years of feeling nothing. Every day waking up empty. All the sadness, loneliness, and anger he felt before was gone. He wanted this to last forever.
17th May 1946
The pair were making their way through a small town south of Salt Lake City with no set destination in sight. They were just floating. It was a hot day and the pair were driving down a quiet country road when they spotted a woman walking alone. Rosie jumped out of the car and quickly bundled the stranger into their car. They compelled her to take them to her house, and invite them in. They were planning on killing her, robbing the house and moving on. Rosie was inspecting upstairs to make sure there wasn't anyone else was in the house, whilst Lawrence stayed with the woman who was sobbing on the sofa. She begged Lawrence not to kill her, telling him she was pregnant. He had missed the bump. Her husband was at work, he had picked up extra shifts so they had more money for when the baby arrived. She was due in four months.
"Will you shut up? I don't want to hear your voice anymore" Lawrence said to the woman. He crouched down so he was level with her face, "Stay here, don't move" The woman nodded. With the compelled human still, he headed upstairs to see what Rosie was doing. As he reached the top of the stairs he could hear her banging around in the bedroom, "What are you doing? Let's get this over and done with. I'm hungry and she won't stop crying" He strolled down the narrow corridor towards Rosie, but he stopped as he reached the baby's nursery. It was decorated all blue, with a crib in the corner. On the wall the name 'Thomas' was etched. The unborn baby already had a name. There were toys neatly placed around the room, and in the crib was a blue teddy. Lawrence walked in and picked the soft toy up.
All it took was one emotion. Guilt. Once Lawrence felt that they were all rushing back to him. Crushing him.
Lawrence dropped the teddy in the crib and backed away. He ran into the bedroom where Rosie was still raiding the woman's drawers. The tears were already threatening in his eyes, "We have to leave Rosie. The woman she's pregnant. We can't kill a pregnant woman!" It was as if he couldn't get the words out fast enough. Rosie looked at him with a puzzled look.
"So?" She returned to looking through the drawers.
"Are you serious?!" He grabbed hold of Rosie's arm, "We're leaving"
It was clear Rosie wasn't about to take no for an answer, "What's got into you? Are you crying?!" Lawrence quickly wiped the tears from his eyes, "What have you done?" He didn't know what he had done, he had just allowed himself to feel something and it was as if a door inside him opened. A door he had been fighting to keep shut for two years.
"I won't let you kill that woman" He swiftly snapped Rosie's neck, and she fell to the floor with a thud. Lawrence glanced down at her body for a moment then ran off downstairs.
The emotions were consuming him by this point, "I'm so sorry" He approached the woman, the tears were falling fast now. He knelt down to her level again, "Forget what just happened. Go into the kitchen, have a cup of coffee, stay in there for 10 minutes if not longer" He swallowed hard, wiping the tears from his eyes, "You're going to be a great mom to Thomas, and you're going live a very happy life" The woman nodded again as Lawrence stood up. The human rose from the sofa and made her way into the kitchen.
Soon as the woman was out of sight, and he heard the kettle click on he ran back upstairs, picked Rosie up, and got them both out of the house. He ran as fast and as far away as possible from the house.
Lawrence was running through fields when he started to slow down. The emotions were crushing him, and he couldn't breathe. He approached a large tree and place Rosie down on the grass, who was starting to come round. He rested against the tree, trying to understand what was happening to him.
"What have I done?!" He slid down the tree, and hit the grass as he started to sob. He looked over at Rosie, but all he could picture was all the people they had killed. All the chaos they had caused. "We... we killed all those people in that diner... then that couple who was camping... and..." He was taking sharp deep breaths in between each sob. He had no idea he was capable of the evil actions he had carried out over the past two years. It was clear now that he was no longer the sweet, caring, and gentle person he was before. He was a monster. A killer.
"I... I can't do this... I... I have to go. I'm sorry" He leaned over and kissed Rosie on the forehead. She slowly opened her eyes, but Lawrence had already left.
