Elias couldn’t believe that the day he had been waiting for his whole life had finally come. He didn’t remember anything about his biological parents, he was only young when his mom died and his dad abandoned him and he had been in the foster system ever since. There was a time when he had come close to being adopted and he had thought that he had found his forever home but it had been ripped away from him after his foster parents learned that they were expecting a child of their own and that there were complications with the baby. He had moved around so many times over the years and he had lived in lots of different States so the truth was that he had given up on finding a place where he belonged. When he moved to Mystic Falls he had felt sure that all he’d needed to do was hang in there for another year or so until he turned eighteen and then he would be able to age out of the system and get a place of his own. The foster parents he had ended up with were meant to be his last placement but like so many before them they had ended up making bad decisions and those decisions had resulted in them getting not just themselves but him killed as well. Elias had been reborn from the ashes and had learned that the strange things that had happened in the past were all because he was a phoenix and finally getting answers had helped but he had thought that he would end up back in the system again after they died and he would have done if not for Antonio and Ethan. He owed them and the girls so much, they had given him a home and a family unlike any that he had ever had before and he was truly happy with them. He had thought that it was only going to be a temporary thing but Antonio and Ethan had had other ideas and with the girls on board with it as well Elias had known that there was no way he would ever say no to officially becoming a part of their family. That day was the day of the adoption hearing and they’d decided to stop by the firehouse on their way there. Antonio and Ethan were both dressed up in suits for the occasion and they had bought one for him as well. Elias felt a little uncomfortable in it considering the last time he’d worn one was for Kelly’s funeral but this was a special occasion and he had known that he’d wanted to look the part as well and hopefully not give the judge any reason to stop them from adopting him. The captain had written a reference for the two of them to support their request to adopt him and Elias found himself looking at the board that hung on the wall containing various photos, both new and old. As his gaze came to rest on one in particular, an older photo of a man cradling a baby in his arms, Elias found himself getting lost in his thoughts. He had overheard one of the social workers a long time ago talking about how he had been left at a firehouse as a baby but she hadn’t said where and Elias was only young at the time so he hadn’t thought to ask. Snapping out of his thoughts as he heard footsteps approaching, Elias turned his attention to the other photos for a moment until he was joined by his dads and someone that he didn’t recognise. “I’m the Captain here. You must be Elias, is that right? I’ve heard a lot about you,” the man asked as he extended a hand for him to shake. “Yes sir, Elias Granger,” he nodded as he shook the man's hand before his eyes widened in surprise at the flash of recognition on the man’s face. “Granger?” he repeated and Elias found himself nodding once more before finding himself thoroughly confused as the man began to smile. “Forgive me, this isn’t the first time we’ve met,” the man said as he pointed at the photo that Elias had been looking at moments before. “Seventeen years ago I found a baby abandoned at the door of this very firehouse, that’s me holding him there,” he explained. “He didn’t have much left with him but his name was Elias Granger, it was you ,” the man said, leaving Elias completely stunned. “Antonio and Ethan have filled me in a little on what you’ve been through. You’ve had a tough life but you’ve found your home in more ways than one, son,” he said and Elias felt his eyes sting with tears as his gaze flicked to his dads. “Did you know about this?” he asked even though he suspected they didn’t considering that Antonio looked just as surprised as he was.
