Business hours for the clinic were technically kept at that. 9-7 Monday to Friday, 9-5 on Saturday. Shut Sundays. Supposedly picked to make sure that she didn’t end up living at the office. That was just technically though. Between the shelter, the clinic and the work with the sheriff’s department every day was a work day. Dawn to well after dusk, home somewhere she usually made it to just in time to heat something up in the microwave and collapse into bed. Rhiannon knew that without Silvio’s partnership in the shelter and Storm and Scott helping out at the clinic it would’ve been a million times worse. She could’ve stopped paying rent then, shifted what little she’d unpacked into her office at the clinic.
It was still a consideration she thought as she climbed out of her truck in front of the shelter. Rolling straight out of the examination room and onto the couch in her office. She’d have gotten more sleep that way, and woken up with fur stuck to the drool that marred her cheek. Ruefully she glanced down at herself, brushing at the fur Ptolemy had left on her as she’d driven over to the shelter. A little never hurt but she’d rather not be pulling it from her mouth every morning. As it was she’d managed a good six hours last night, finishing up the paperwork over another dinner of not-so-bad Chinese food before she’d crashed. This morning she’d been up at dawn again, giving Ptolemy a run behind the house before she’d packed up the truck for a full on day at the shelter.
She opened the rear door of the truck now, giving a short sharp whistle that had the dog hopping down and racing away. The area around the shelter was safe enough, although she’d thought the same about the woods before Kip had been hurt and she’d had to stitch the small dog back together. Kip was healing, thankfully. She hadn’t had to stand there and tell her partner that she was sorry, there was nothing else she could do. That was what kept her coming back every morning, what had her staying for hours after she should’ve done and that was why Rhiannon had asked Scott if he could come in especially early that morning to help. They were having a drive on animal adoption this week and before she hopefully managed to convince half the town’s population to come take a look at the animals desperate for a home she wanted to make sure each was as healthy as possible.
Rhiannon headed for the shelter, unlocking the front door and propping it open to both let some air in and give Ptolemy access to the building when he wanted it. The store room was her first port of call and she picked up the two adapted tool boxes she’d put together to carry the meds and equipment they were likely to need for the dogs. She heard the approach of a bike as she was heading back out to the reception and looked up as her assistant walked in through the front door. ”Thanks for coming over,” she said honestly, offering him a smile as she drummed her fingers on top of the box she’d prepared for Scott. ”You OK to stay until after lunch? It should give us time to get through all the dogs. I figured we’d work together down the line of kennels, gives us both a little bit of company that’s capable of talking back.” That was certainly the most lacking part of the job. Animals gave you all the love in the world but conversation was definitely lacking.

When Scott decided that he wanted to take a job at the animal clinic in Mystic Falls he had known that working there wouldn’t be anything like working with Deaton had been but the truth was that he still hadn’t expected his first boss to be so difficult. The guy had been so particular about everything and if anything wasn’t perfect he’d had a fit. It hadn’t made it very pleasant to work there and if Scott was honest he had thought about quitting on more than a few occasions because of the guy but he hadn’t because the pay hadn’t been bad and he had known that he had needed to keep money coming in so that he could continue helping his mom with the bills. He had also felt bad for the animals under the guy’s care and if he was honest they were the main reason why he had stayed. He had learned so much from Deaton during the time that they had worked together, more than he ever had from his first boss in Mystic Falls, and if he was honest it had come as a huge relief when the animal clinic had changed hands. Scott hadn’t known back then what it would mean for his job but as it happened he had been kept on and his new boss was much better than his old one. Rhiannon was someone who genuinely seemed to care about the animals she looked after and during the time they had been working together he had learned so much from her. In a way she reminded him of Deaton in that respect but they were two very different people and around her he knew that he needed to be careful not to reveal what he was or what he could do. That didn’t mean that he couldn’t still do a good job, though, and despite the fact that he wasn’t meant to be working that day he hadn’t hesitated in agreeing to go in when Rhiannon had asked him to. He knew that she wouldn’t have asked unless she had really needed the help and since the plan was to get as many animals from the shelter as possible he knew that there was far too much for one person to do alone so the truth was that he was only too happy to help. It made a change to be heading towards the shelter rather than the clinic but the truth was that Scott didn’t mind one bit. Before he knew it he was there and he felt a smile work its way across his face as Rhiannon thanked him. “It’s no problem,” he assured her. “I have a free day today so I can stay as long as you need me to,” he offered, knowing that if there was more work that needed to be done he was more than happy to lend a hand. “What do you want to start with?” he asked, knowing that there was probably quite a bit that they were going to need to do if they were going to get the dogs ready to be adopted. After what had happened with Storm, Rhiannon was glad to see Scott turn up at the shelter. She hadn’t known what she was taking on when she’d agreed to keep on the teenager working part time for her predecessor. The man himself had been a piece of work, the thoughts rolling off of him like a foul cloud of steam enough to confirm the feeling she got just on the surface of dealing with him. She’d been glad when he’d finally signed on the dotted line and she’d taken the clinic over wholesale. There’d been a question about setting up a rival clinic when she’d arrived but it would’ve meant being in competition with the guy and leaving Scott working in his hands. The way it had worked out in the end had been a blessing of sorts for them all and it had given her the room to set up the shelter with Silvio too. Some might’ve called it serendipity but Rhiannon wasn’t about to get so poetic about it all.
With Scott, with her other employees, with this town, her clinic and her partner, she’d lucked out and she absolutely knew it.
Today’s tasks were doable on her own but having Scott here was going to make it all a dozen times easier. He was hard working and more importantly with Storm gone, reliable and punctual. Rhiannon didn’t even bother checking her watch as she tapped her fingers against the toolbox she’d set up with what they were going to need.
As Scott told her he could stay as long as he needed to she chuckled and held up her hands, warding off the idea a little. She wasn’t able to keep either of them there til midnight, although left her own devices she might just’ve slipped into doing that. It was always one more animal, one more task if she wasn’t careful. ”Hopefully both of us will be out of here by early afternoon,” she promised. ”I’m guessing you’ve got classes to do tomorrow and I need to swing by the grocery store on the way home before I end up like Old Mother Hubbard with nothing in the cupboard.” There’d be kibble on hand of course, she always made she that Ptolemy had fresh food and water daily but if the takeout places in town all decided to boycott her she’d have starved in just a few short days.
Smiling, Rhiannon lifted the tool box and held it out to Scott on her fingertips. That was one of the best things about him, she never got that sense that he was balking at anything she asked him to do on the job. Scott was here because he wanted to learn, because he genuinely loved the job, not just because she was paying him more than the going rate for his help. ”I figured we’d share the load, work out way down the kennels, leap frogging one another. General health checks on all the animals, making sure they’re all up to date on vaccinations. Nail clippings, although I know that Bear isn’t going to be happy with that.” The beagle had been the most skittish when she’d found him on the road a few miles out of town, bones pushing at his skin, a cut sliced across one ear, his claws grating at the blacktop in a way that had her shuddering. ”You’ve worked on him before haven’t you?” It was easier when her assistants got to know an animal and followed their care through, the bond of trust working both ways then.

Scott had grown used to being called into the clinic to work when he wasn’t meant to since he and Deaton had become close after he became a werewolf but it wasn’t something that Scott had done very much since moving to Mystic Falls. His first boss at the animal clinic had been awful and more than a few times Scott had thought about quitting but he hadn’t wanted to give up his chance to carry on working with animals and the truth was that he had also needed the money so that he could help his mom out so quitting just hadn’t been an option for him. Instead he’d had to put up with a boss who wasn’t happy with anything at all that he or any of the other staff at the clinic did and more than a few times Scott had found himself wondering why the guy had even bothered hiring people in the first place if he was never going to be happy with the work they did. He had thought that he would end up losing his job when Rhiannon took over but she had kept him on and she had stepped up to be a mentor to him almost like Deaton had back in Beacon Hills. Naturally Scott hadn’t told her that he was a werewolf and he was always careful when he used his abilities but the two of them got along well and Scott had been gaining much more experience while he had been working with her so things were much better in that respect than they had been when he first took the job. That day she had asked to help him at the shelter and even though he wasn’t meant to be working the truth was that he hadn’t had anything else planned so it had been easy enough for him to say yes. There were a lot of animals there and with the open day approaching he didn’t doubt that it would have been a nightmare for Rhiannon if she had tried to check on all of the animals on her own so he was more than happy to help. “That’s fine,” he nodded as she said that hopefully they would both be out of there by early afternoon. As she spoke again, he thought for a moment. “I do but thankfully none first thing,” he admitted. He always preferred it when his classes started later in the day and he was lucky that most of the time they did. Taking the tool box from her, Scott nodded at her suggestion. “Sounds good to me. How many people are you expecting to show up for it?” he asked, genuinely curious as to how many of the animals he likely wouldn’t be seeing too much of after today. As she asked about Bear, a smile worked its way across Scott’s face. “Yeah, I have. It took him a while but I think he’s used to me now,” he admitted. Some animals were easier to gain the trust of than others but being a werewolf helped because the animals could sense it in him and he was pretty sure that it put them at ease at least a little. “Let’s do this.”RHIANNON GREY

Since she’d taken over Rhiannon had tried not to take advantage of her assistants. If something needed hands getting dirtied, hers would always be first in but there were those times when she couldn’t do it all on her own. She would’ve tried if Scott had told her he couldn’t help this afternoon but she was glad she didn’t have to. Her predecessor had been glad to rage at his employees for not getting things right, by all accounts, but the moment it came to him not wanting to do something he’d do everything in the world to get out of it. It was an odd combination, one she’d been glad to be able to put an end to when she’d taken over the practice. Employees weren’t there for you to take your temper out on, they weren’t servants you could berate. All three of those working for her were there to learn, to work their way towards being vets themselves, hopefully, one day.
Rhiannon smiled as he said early afternoon would be fine. The last thing she wanted to do was cause problems with Scott’s education. From what she knew, he was on course to make an excellent vet and she wanted to help not hinder that. ”Excellent,” she breathed. ”I’ll be up early enough tomorrow for the both of us. I like to get here an hour before any of our events start.” It was the perfectionist in her, that need for everything to go right for the animals that had ended up in the care. Luckily she always had Silvio on hand for things like that. She’d sure as hell lucked out not only with her employees but with her partner.
Taking her own tool box Rhiannon started towards the kennels. They were always meticulously cleaned, the animals well taken care of but you never could predict when an issue would crop up with an animal out of the blue and the last thing she wanted to do was pass a sick animal onto a new owner. ”We’ve been putting posters up all over town, so hopefully everybody who lives in Mystic Falls,” she said with a trace of humour in her voice. ”Last time we had an event we had about a hundred stop by. Fifteen animals were adopted then. I’m hoping to break our record.” The faster the animals found homes the better, none of them deserved to live long term in a place like this, even if they were well taken care of.
Rhiannon stopped by the first cage, letting Scott move past to the second, where Bear was looking up at him with eager eyes. She could hear the beagle’s low, yodelling bark and chuckled. ”I think he’s happy to see you,” she said lightly. ”Have you ever thought about adopting a dog?” Carefully Rhiannon opened up the kennel door, dropping her knees to stop the Yorkshire Terrier inside from slipping out. ”No Houdini acts today Mouse,” she said, stroking the dog from his silky ears to his stub of a tail. ”You’re supposed to be on your best behaviour for tomorrow.” The terrier had a way of worming her way out of almost everywhere, yet somehow ended up in your lap if it was free. She’d drive some owner crazy and have them falling in love with her all at the same time, she thought as Mouse wriggled into her lap.

When Scott first applied for the job at the animal clinic back in Beacon Hills it had been so that he could earn some money to help his mom. He hadn’t planned on enjoying it as much as he had done but not a day went by when he regretted taking the job. Deaton had taught him so much and Scott knew that without him he never would have figured out what he wanted to do with his life. Working with animals was something that he was passionate about and Scott knew that he wanted to make it happen no matter what. He had come close to giving up on his dream so that he could go to Whitmore with all of his friends and stay with Bonnie rather than going to a different school across the country and actually do the course that he wanted to do. He hadn’t wanted it to come to that but he had known that he just couldn’t leave everyone that he loved behind him, not when they had all decided that they were going to go to the same school together. He knew that he was fortunate that Stefan or whoever it was that had compelled the Dean into offering a veterinary medicine course and he knew that he wasn’t going to pass up the chance to pursue his dream while still staying around the people that he cared about. His last boss in Mystic Falls had made him start to wonder whether he was doing the right thing but thankfully Rhiannon had taken over running the clinic and she was a much better boss than the guy he had worked for before. Scott would be lying if he said that he didn’t miss Deaton, after all the guy had been able to help him not just with the veterinary side of things but also with the supernatural side of things as well. He had proved to be a good friend and mentor and Scott sometimes felt like he was in over his head now that he no longer had that safety net but he was doing his best to stand on his own two feet and he knew that he couldn’t do anymore than that. With Rhiannon it was different, as far as he knew she wasn’t aware of the supernatural world and he wanted to keep it that way. It was good being around someone who saw him as a normal teenager rather than a werewolf or an alpha and he knew that he didn’t want that to change. For now he knew that he just wanted to do the best job that he could and he wasn’t afraid to go above and beyond to make sure that she knew that she could count on him. “I can understand that,” Scott admitted as she said that she liked to get in an hour early for all of the events. “I should have some free time tomorrow so if you need help just give me a call,” he offered, knowing that he wasn’t going to leave her in the lurch if she needed a hand. All of the animals deserved a place that they could call home so he knew that he would help in any way he could. Heading in the direction of the kennels, Scott nodded as she spoke. “I hope tomorrow goes just as well, all of these guys deserve good homes,” he admitted as they made their way towards the cages. “I’m happy to see him too,” Scott admitted, a smile working its way across his face as he stopped in front of Bear’s cage and opened the door. “He’s just misunderstood,” he added with a grin before letting his expression turn thoughtful for a moment as Rhiannon asked if he had ever thought about adopting a dog. “I’ve always wanted one but I have school and my mom works a lot so it never seemed fair,” he shrugged. “Besides, with three teenagers in the house I’m sure my mom thinks things are crazy enough,” he chuckled. Their family had definitely grown but he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. Opening the cage door, he reached inside and stroked Bear gently. “Hey buddy, are you ready for tomorrow?” he asked as he lifted the dog out so that he could get started on his check up. The yard had always been filled with dogs. Kept in their kennels at night, huge kennels that had stretched halfway across the land they had behind the house, trained on that grass and out in the woods by day. Rhiannon couldn’t have recalled a time when they hadn’t had a dog around even if she’d tried. She knew it had mainly been her mom’s thing but she’d never seen more happiness on her dad’s face than when he was out there, watching her mom go through her routine with the dogs. Falling on the ground with them at the end of it, she’d wait for the moment when her parents released the dogs from their state of attention and would roll around with them, filled with glee as those wriggling bodies had bumped into hers, their tongues ticking her face as they’d all piled in. The last time she’d done it before she’d shipped out had almost been heartbreaking. Heading for the military there’d been no way she could’ve taken so many with her. The unit was streamlined, one dog, one handler, the bond between them all that mattered.
Looking along the line of kennels now Rhiannon knew that she’d never swap Ptolemy for anything but there were times when she was sorely tempted to empty the shelter and take all the dogs home with her. An entire pack racing around her house, much like Silvio’s own. Tempting but impossible. With the amount of time she spent at work it wouldn’t be fair. Nope, Rhiannon thought as she told Scott about getting to the shelter early for events, it was better for all of them that she coaxed people into giving them the good homes they deserved tomorrow. Rhiannon slanted a smile at Scott at his offer. ”Making that sort of offer can get you into trouble if you’re not careful,” she warned in a sing-song tone. If it did get really busy tomorrow then she might just do it but she also didn’t want to drag Scott away from his studies. Fingers crossed she and Silvio would be able to manage and she could trail into the clinic on Monday with the news that they were all emptied out.
Her expression softened as she stopped in front of Mouse’s kennel, blue eyes cutting aside to Scott with genuine appreciation in her smile. ”Thanks, Scott.” She nodded, drawing in a breath as she dropped down on her knees in the door to her cage. Laughter rolled out as Bear began to bay. ”I think that goes for a lot of people and animals in this town. People go on first impressions and refuse to change.” Or they only saw what they wanted to. It had been the same where she’d grown up, minds small and narrow, opinions judgy. She’d heard about Scott’s home situation before, details dropped here and there in conversation. ”Other than your mom working it seems like the perfect situation,” she mused. ”Three teenagers with plenty of energy, you’d have a dog in Heaven being able to walk it all the time.” She half understood, although her own home had never been that way. Rhiannon scrubbed a hand over Mouse’s wriggling body before she tucked him under her arm to check his ears. ”What’s it like having a house that full?” she asked, glancing in Scott’s direction before she carefully checked Mouse’s other ear for signs of a recurrence of the mites he’d had when he’d arrived.

When Scott moved to Mystic Falls he had known that he would have to get a job so that he could help his mom and make sure that she didn’t have to worry about him so much. Working at the animal clinic had seemed like the perfect way of doing that especially since working with Deaton had made him realise that he wanted to become a vet but his first boss in town couldn’t have been any more different to Deaton if he had tried. The guy hadn’t wanted an assistant that could really help out and train, he had just wanted someone to do the jobs that he didn’t want to do. More than a few times Scott had thought about quitting but in the end he had toughed it out so that he wouldn’t have to worry about trying to find another job and he was glad that he had done. Rhiannon had eventually bought the clinic and working with her was much more like what Scott had grown used to back in Beacon Hills. He was able to help out much more and Scott had found himself enjoying his work once again. He loved working with animals and he knew that he wanted to build up as much experience as he could so that it would help him now that he was at Whitmore studying to become a vet himself. That day Rhiannon had asked him to go in even though he was meant to have the day off and the truth was that Scott was more than happy to oblige. He didn’t have anything else that he needed to be doing and he had known that she wouldn’t have asked if it wasn’t important so considering how much he had been able to learn while he had been working with her he knew that it really was the least he could do. Rhiannon’s words were enough to make Scott laugh and he shook his head. “I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it,” he chuckled. He knew how important his studies were and he was still doing his best to make sure that he had time to spend with his friends as well but this was important as well and he knew that he wouldn’t leave her in the lurch if she needed him. All of the animals deserved to go to good homes and he honestly hoped that it all went well. “Any time,” Scott said, offering her a smile as he looked over at her. Opening Bear’s cage, Scott reached inside and scratched behind the beagle’s ears. “Hey buddy,” he said fondly. He had been working with some of the animals for such a long time so it would be a shame to see them go but he wanted them to find somewhere they belonged so he hoped it would work out. “A lot do but there are some people around here who are good at keeping an open mind,” he offered as he started to check Bear over. Those were the ones he hoped would show up the following day but it was difficult to tell. “I am pretty lucky,” Scott agreed. As Rhiannon spoke again, Scott rolled his eyes playfully. “Isaac and Malia might not mind having a dog around but I’m not so sure about my mom,” he admitted. There was also the worry of who would look after the dog during the full moon but that wasn’t something that he could share with his boss. “It’s actually a lot quieter than you might think. We all have our own stuff going on but for me it’s nice having people around while my mom is working,” he shrugged. “Have you thought about adopting any of the dogs?”RHIANNON GREY

Even when she’d been in uniform she hadn’t liked to be the sort of leader who stepped back and left everybody to crawl into a situation without her. She hadn’t even wanted to be a leader in the first place, not after she’d seen what people supposedly in charge could do but after a few months of serving with her unit Rhiannon had found herself pushed in that direction. Her superiors had called her a natural, what she’d called it was months of constantly battling not to grow frustrated and accidentally invade the minds of those serving under her. It had been a tense time, that ability to slip over the line whenever she was tired or frustrated. The learning curve had been steep but it had shown her pretty quickly what sort of officer she wanted to be. She wasn’t in uniform anymore, couldn’t be after what had happened to her mom, but still she tried to keep hold of what had made her a decent soldier, at least what she liked to think had made her one.
That meant getting her hands dirty, not asking any more of her employees than she was willing to give herself, and, probably the part of it most would’ve had an issue with … working seven days a week. It wasn’t like she had what she would’ve called an active social life in town, not like the people she had working for her. If she wasn’t at the clinic then she was here, if she wasn’t here then she was working with the Sheriff’s people, putting her tracking skills to use. The only person she saw outside of work tended to be Silvio and she guessed that was almost as work adjacent as Scott or Kari would’ve been. Almost.
Rhiannon half smile, a chuckle rolling out of her in response to Scott’s laugh. Another thing she’d learned, you couldn’t always trust that people meant what they were saying. So much happened in their minds and she’d had more than enough of seeing that difference. ”Maybe,” she admitted. ”Could still come back to bite you on the butt.” If she was like her predecessor, but she wasn’t, never would be, so Scott was safe. She wanted to see him succeed, graduate college and become the vet she knew he could be.
Genuinely grateful for what he was doing, she’d thanked him again, returning his smile with a crooked one of her own. Bear joined in, the beagle baying loudly as Scott opened the cage. She listened to him talk with the dog, knew he was just what Bear needed for the moment. She went to work, gathering Mouse close to her to start doing her checks. ”I won’t deny that. I’m glad the Sheriff seems like one of them, working for her has bought a few people home.” Lost tourists or campers, those who ventured into the woods when they probably shouldn’t have done. Rhiannon made a low sound of agreement, her fingers rubbing Mouse’s ears gently as she realised them. The little dog squirmed against her, doing his best to wash her hands with his tongue. ”Maybe a dog would make it a little less quiet, especially if you promised your mom you’d take care of him.” Not that it would really be feasible to do that with Scott at Whitmore a lot of the time. Dorms didn’t tend to allow animals. She’d grown up somewhere she could, although there wasn’t always much human company. ”I guess it’s the opposite for me,” she admitted. ”I have Ptolemy around but people? Not much. Are you trying to talk me into taking one home too?” Rhiannon chuckled. Kari had tried to do the same and she’d considered it then. Now she found herself doing it again.
