They’d been done in the life. After Victoria’s death and the discovery that Gerard had been prepared to use a teenaged boy as his own personal killing machine there’d been a line drawn in the sand that he’d been determined not to cross. The Argents under his watch weren’t mindless killers, they didn’t slaughter the supernatural just because of what they were. It took actions and that should’ve been what they had clung on to even this far after Marie-Jeanne Valet had slaughtered her own brother but they’d lost their way. It had taken a teenaged boy his daughter had been in love with to show them the way back. Scott had morals, more than Gerard, more than Kate, more than him Chris was ashamed to admit. Allison had slowly helped to convince him of it before she too had been killed thanks to an evil in their midst that needed to be stopped. Then … he’d wondered if there could’ve been something more that he could’ve done to stop the nogitsune before that night but the rational part of his mind, the one that knew the truth, was unshakably certain that things couldn’t have played out any differently. This situation on the other hand?
There were options.
The one he’d taken in the end, as he’d stood in this ramshackle room, staring at the blood caked wolf beyond the bars, was the one that gave Scott the choice. Scott had been the one nearly killed by those looking to impress an Original and get in on the ground floor when it came to what would probably be a nearly unstoppable hybrid army, Scott had been the one saved by a witch who’d befriended them all, Scott would be the one to keep a cool head here. As it was the laughter from the wolf, spat out from lips that had been kept split and bleeding thanks to the dose of wolfsbane he’d been loaded up with on the way over here, had gotten under his own skin and left his voice icy cold as he’d left the message on Scott’s voicemail. Sinking down on the edge of the half collapsed desk Chris had watched the werewolf through the barred door of what might’ve been a strong room in the former pawnbroker’s shop, ignoring the shouts that came from within until he saw the werewolf’s eyes dart to the front of the shop. ”You brought him to me again? What are you trying to do old man, give me a second chance?” He didn’t answer, didn’t even move other than to cross his arms over his chest. It was only at the chime of the bell that remained over the unlocked front door that Chris found his voice. ”Back here Scott,” he said evenly. ”I think there’s someone here looking forward to seeing you again. Am I right?” One greying brow rose, the husky like gaze focusing on the captured werewolf again, as if daring him to finally show some sense and shut his mouth.

Scott had faced a lot of enemies before and he had found himself in danger plenty of times in the past but the closest he had ever come to losing his life was when he was attacked by a group of Klaus’ hybrid wannabes. They had wanted him to agree to join Klaus’ pack when the time came and when Scott refused, they’d attacked. He wasn’t sure whether they had ever meant to hurt him as much as they had done at first but they had certainly enjoyed it and by the time they’d walked away they’d left him for dead. Had he not managed to make it to Bonnie’s and had she not managed to heal him then he knew that they would have succeeded but they hadn’t. He had pulled through and even though it had taken his body time to heal completely he’d had the chance for it to do just that and now he was back to normal. Scott hadn’t gone down without a fight, he had hurt a few of them in ways that would have taken a while to heal too but it was the fact that there were so many of them and only one of him that had meant that he hadn’t really stood a chance. His friends had rallied around him after they’d learned what had happened and he had been doing his best to keep his promise to Stiles by making sure that he had at least one or two of his friends with him when he needed to head into town or to work but the truth was that he hated feeling so helpless. He knew that he would have done the same if it was any of his friends that had ended up getting hurt if they weren’t sure whether their attackers would try again but Scott had never liked being on the receiving end of that treatment himself and the truth was that he still didn’t now. For his friends he was trying though and he knew that that had to count for something. That day wasn’t one of those days, however. Scott hadn’t been able to answer the phone when Chris had called but the voicemail he’d left had been enough to fill Scott with dread. He knew that he perhaps should have called Allison or one of the others and told them what was going on but the truth was that he didn’t know himself just yet so he knew that he had to find out what was going on first. There was a time when Chris had wanted to kill him because of what he was but they had moved past that a long time ago. Now the man was a friend and Scott knew that whatever he was up to he would be doing with good intentions so Scott knew that he needed to see this through. Pulling his bike up to the pawnbroker’s shop where Chris had asked to meet him Scott couldn’t deny that he was confused but he pulled his helmet off and placed it over the seat nonetheless. Once his bike was locked up he headed inside and made his way through to the back of the shop when he heard the man’s voice calling out to him. “Hey, I got your message. What’s going on?” he asked as he entered the back room before coming to a stop as his gaze came to rest on the werewolf that Chris had captured. “What’s going on here?”CHRIS ARGENT

Allison had tempered them. Even before he’d lost her she’d been changing the family, changing the way they did this.
Staring at the wolf in the cell they’d built especially to keep shifters penned in here in town, Chris knew that there’d been a time when he wouldn’t have bothered with the cell. The werewolves had attacked one of their own. In the past it only would’ve caught their attention if that fight had boiled over and spilled human blood. Animals were just animals and when they were snapping at each other, it meant that they weren’t attacking those who couldn’t protect themselves. Victoria had hung on to that mentality as the world around them had begun to shift. She’d seen Scott as a threat, one that would only end up bloodying their daughter. She’d been right in a way but Chris knew he couldn’t condemn Scott any more for Allison’s death than he could himself. Allison had died trying to protect her friends, trying to free Stiles from the grip of the nogitsune.
It was a miracle he’d gotten her back and he wasn’t about to tarnish that by not helping those who had made sure that Allison had been brought to them. Scott had become more than just Allison’s first love. He was a friend. The attack on him had been cowardly and vicious and those who had done it had been foolish not to take off when they had the chance.
This one had stuck around, practically crawling up to the mansion’s door to beg the great Niklaus Mikaelson for a seat at the table when the power was being dolled out to his little hybrid army. He’d been foolish to open his mouth when he’d realized that a hunter had tracked him down, to brag would’ve been to earn a death sentence but these weren’t the bad old days, the new order had arrived and Chris knew he had to give Scott the choice of what happened here.
Waiting for him to return his call or show up, Chris had sat and watched the cell, turning a deaf ear to the wolf for the most part, ignoring its bragging laughter. Swiveling where he sat, Chris eyed Scott over his shoulder as he walked in. Scott had recovered from the injuries he’d sustained in the act, looking a hundred times stronger than the wolf in the cell now. ”Scott … meet Claude Zahn. Claude, meet the true Alpha you decided to pick a fight with.” Chris’ lips curved in a cool smile as he pushed his way to his feet. He took a few steps towards Scott, not bothering to drop his voice. The wolfsbane was making Claude weaker but he’d still pick up on whatever was said in this building. ”We had news of another attack on a wolf,” he said, his voice faintly gruff. ”This one didn’t make it but Claude and his friends hung around a while, toasting a lost cause. They didn’t know they were going to have company. Do you recognize him?” The werewolf in the cage had already bragged about what he’d done in the name of the Original Hybrid but he wasn’t about to do anything to the wolf without absolute proof.

It was strange to think just how quickly things had changed. It wasn’t that long ago that Scott’s biggest problem had been figuring out how to be ok with just being Bonnie’s friend since he had spent so long thinking that she wasn’t interested in him as anything more after the kiss they shared but a near death experience had changed everything. Now he had finally figured things out with her but he had also scared his mom and his friends half to death. He hadn’t planned for any of it to happen, he had walked home on his own after work hundreds of times before and nothing bad had happened but he had been targeted by some werewolves who were loyal to Klaus and saying no to becoming a hybrid had almost cost Scott his life. It was only because Bonnie had been home at the time he had shown up on her doorstep that he was still alive and that was something that he was still painfully aware of at the moment. He and his friends had had close calls in the past and they’d lost people they cared about before but Scott wasn’t used to being the one that his friends cared about. He was so used to being the one looking out for all of them but this time the roles had been reversed and it had to be said that he didn’t like it. He had made Stiles a promise that he wasn’t going to walk home from work on his own from now on, though, instead he would lean on his friends more and that was a promise he intended on sticking to. Meeting up with Chris was completely different though. Scott had known at first that the guy hadn’t really liked the fact that Allison was dating one of the creatures that his family had hunted for generations but over time Chris had become a friend to him and Scott hadn’t hesitated in agreeing to meet up with him when he’d asked. It had sounded like it was something urgent so Scott had known that there was no way that he was going to leave him hanging. He probably should have called back to say that he was on his way but instead he had known that it would be easier to just show up and that was exactly what he had decided to do. There was something familiar about the wolf that Chris had caught and as he introduced the guy, the memory of the attack replayed in his mind and he recognised the guy. He kept that to himself as he and Chris moved away from him, though, and his heart sank as Chris explained that there was another attack on a wolf. “No,” he growled, clenching his hand into a fist as he tried to process what he had just been told. He knew that he had been lucky to survive but another hadn’t been so lucky and Scott couldn’t help but wonder how many more casualties there were going to be caused by the wolves that wanted to impress Klaus. “I do, he was one of the wolves that attacked me,” Scott nodded, doing his best to keep his emotions in check as much as he could. “What are you planning to do with him?” Killing him wasn’t something that Scott would ever be able to condone but he knew that they couldn’t just let Claude and his friends carry on hurting others either. They needed to be stopped, there just had to be a better way. CHRIS ARGENT

The one thing he’d been absolute about when they’d left Mystic Falls the first time had been keeping his daughter out of a world that had allowed Gerard to twist Kate up into someone he barely recognized anymore. They’d managed it for years, walling their daughter off from it so well that when the veil over it had been ripped down in Mystic Falls the shock had been immense, just bouncing Allison into the one place they’d never wanted her to be. His compulsion had never been to protect anybody else’s kids from it in the same way but looking back now Chris wished he’d been able to. The games you played to protect people over ever seemed to drag them in deeper.
A small voice in the back of his mind had warned him that he was doing the same with Scott here but, he thought, watching the werewolf he’d captured in the cell he’d put him in, this was different. Scott had risen to True Alpha status because of who he was, the inner strength he had. It meant he could handle this, the judgment of one of those who’d nearly killed him just because he hadn’t wanted to be turned into a hybrid by Niklaus Mikaelson.
Respecting that strength and resilience he’d made the call. Now that the question was hanging in the air as to whether or not Scott recognized Claude, Chris knew that he was placing a lot of weight on the boy’s shoulders. Blue eyes flicked up to meet Scott’s as Chris crossed his arms over his chest. He could see the anger there over the fact that another wolf had lost their life resisting the press-ganging by Claude and his people. The fire in the pit of Scott’s stomach might serve him well with the decision they were going to make here.
Chris bobbed his head as Scott confirmed that he recognized Claude, a slow breath slipping out of him. For Gerard that would’ve been more than enough. Claude would’ve been strung up, cut in half for his crime. It wasn’t … unwarranted … in this situation, but the Argents were no longer judge, jury and executioner. ”He kinda confirmed that for me before you came, bragged, but I needed to know for certain.” Chris glanced over his shoulder, watched Claude sink down on the cot in the cage like a puppet whose strings had just been cut. Guilty and seemingly aware that his sentence lay firmly in the hands of the teenaged boy he’d come close to killing.
His jaw flexing slightly, Chris looked back at Scott. This was where Scott’s inner strength was going to come into play. Would he decide to give Claude another chance and have him freed or would he do as some others would’ve done and condemn the wolf to death. ”That depends on you,” he said tightly. ”My people were willing to deal with him immediately, as they did the others in his little group. Some escaped, two were killed as we tried to take them. Claude’s the only one still in our hands. I wanted to give you the choice on what we do with him.” The shields dropped over Chris’ expression, as Gerard had trained his people to do. He didn’t want to influence the matter one way or the other. ”What do you planning to do with him Scott?” And down came the pressure on a boy who’d probably had too much weight on him over the last couple of years as it was.

Scott knew that everything that had happened with the werewolves that had attacked him had terrified his friends, he was used to being the one looking out for them rather than the other way around but he was doing his best to do as Stiles had asked and make sure that he had one of the others with him at all times rather than going anywhere on his own so that they didn’t have to worry about him any more than they did already. It wasn’t easy and he often felt like a burden to them but he knew that he would have expected them to do exactly the same thing if the roles were reversed so he knew that he owed it to them to go through with it for a while. He hadn’t seen any of the wolves that had attacked him since that day but that didn’t mean that they weren’t still in town. They had made it clear to him that they weren’t planning on going anywhere and he knew that they were serious about becoming Klaus’ minions. If they weren’t then they wouldn’t have been trying so hard to get on his good side and it was that desire to get noticed that had almost cost Scott his life. He had always known that being a True Alpha would make him a target to certain people but so far he had been pretty lucky and he knew that he just had to hope that it would be a while before he was targeted for that again. He knew that he probably shouldn’t have gone to meet Chris on his own that day but from the message he had felt pretty sure that this wasn’t something that any of the others should be getting involved with. Scott knew that Chris was looking out for him but he would be lying if he said that seeing the other werewolf locked up didn’t bother him. He knew what it was like to run afoul of hunters and it wasn’t something that he would wish on anyone but Chris wasn’t any ordinary hunter. The two of them hadn’t gotten along at first but now he was family to Scott just as much as anyone in the pack was and Scott knew that it would always be that way. He had been through so much but he had stuck with them all and he had also ended up sticking to the code that Allison had made him adopt before she’d died so he knew that everything he was doing now was with good intentions in mind but Scott wasn’t sure that this was the best way to deal with it. “He does look pretty pleased with himself,” Scott admitted. Scott hadn’t gone down without a fight but it had been the same when he was attacked as well. The werewolves had seemed to enjoy hurting him the way they had done and that was something that he knew he would never forget. As Chris said that what happened next depended on him, Scott whirled around and fixed his gaze on the hunter. Before he could ask what he meant he was already speaking again and Scott’s expression turned thoughtful as he turned back to look at the werewolf. “What he did was awful but he doesn’t deserve to die. I’ll never believe that anyone deserves that,” he said at last as he turned back to look at Chris once more. “Killing him isn’t the answer but he can’t be allowed to join Klaus either, then he could become too strong for us to stop. We need to get him to leave town and stay away.”CHRIS ARGENT

Captured werewolves usually fell into two categories - those who pleaded innocence and swore this was a one off incident, if they admitted it had happened at all, and wouldn’t happen again and those who saw nothing wrong with he blood they spilled. This werewolf was definitely the latter. Watching the werewolf in the cell, he’d seen the pride shine in the things eyes. If they gave him clemency there would be a next time, perhaps not Scott, it might’ve learned its lesson there, but there were others in the town without Scott’s strength. Chris suspected quite a few had already been rounded up, handed over to Niklaus Mikaelson like lambs to the slaughter. Even one would’ve been too many. He could’ve ended the problem himself, justifiably killed the wolf as a warning to any others who would’ve done the same thing but when the dust had settled Claude had still been alive and the only course of action that had sat right with him was giving Scott the choice of what he was going to do with the wolf who’d almost killed him.
It was a hell of a weight to put on anybody’s shoulders, an even heavier one for a kid barely out of high school. He could’ve argued that Scott had stopped being just a normal care free kid the minute that Peter Hale had sunk his fangs into the boy but that didn’t matter. They’d all settled here hoping to give their kids back some semblance of what their teenaged years should’ve been like and in a way he was helping to break that. Behind the bars of the cell Claude chuckled, his head hanging low, but the sound rolling out all the same. ”We were,” he admitted in a low voice. ”Do you know how many more we went for after you? Some made it through.” He shrugged his shoulders, peering at them as Chris turned his back more fully. It didn’t matter where they talked in the building, the wolf would still hear them. ”It’s been the same since he came in. He told me what they did to you, admitted it was a matter of capture or kill.” The wolf hadn’t seemed to be bothered which it had ended up being. They’d had fun either way. It was stopping now though.
Arms ropey with muscle crossed over his chest. Chris didn’t follow Scott’s gaze but he knew that the boy was staring at the wolf. Gerard would’ve called Scott’s compassion a bleeding heart, one that would one day kill the kid. Maybe it was but there was nothing wrong with relying on your compassion. His own had pushed him to put this decision in Scott’s hands. ”Not even knowing that he’ll do this again if he gets the chance?” he asked, his voice low. He already knew that it wouldn’t matter to Scott. There were non-lethal methods to try first. Chris half turned, cold blue eyes on the werewolf in the cage again. Claude was back on his feet, grinning through the bars now he saw freedom in his sights. ”There are hunters countrywide. We could move him on to another town, clear on the other side of the country. They’d watch him, make sure he didn’t lift a finger to try and get back here. Unless you’ve got other ideas how to change his mind on becoming Niklaus Mikaelson’s number one fan?” Chris winged a brow at Scott as he looked back.

Scott’s life was turned upside down the day that he was bitten and for a while he had found himself clinging to the hope that what Derek said would work and that if he killed Peter then he would go back to being human. Back then he was so desperate to get back what he’d lost that it hadn’t even occurred to him that perhaps this was the person that he was meant to be. Before that he’d always had Stiles and his mom in his corner but they were the only two people that he had ever been able to truly count on. Now he had so many more people that he trusted than that and he knew that he really was lucky. They had all been through so much together and he and his friends had moved part way across the country to try and save one of their own. From the moment Scott had realised that Allison was back and that she was being possessed by a demon he had known that he’d had to do everything in his power to help her. He had been prepared to try and help her on his own but his friends had stood by him and for that he was grateful. Together they had found a way to free her from the demon that had been possessing her and the truth was that he didn’t regret moving to Mystic Falls one bit. So much had happened while they were there but he knew that it had brought them all closer together and they had made a lot more friends that they could trust as well. There was no way that Allison could have returned with them to Beacon Hills after everyone there knew that she had died anyway so Scott knew that they were where they needed to be. Living in Mystic Falls was still dangerous, though, and it wasn’t too long ago that Scott had almost lost his life after he was attacked by some werewolves who wanted to impress Klaus. One of those werewolves was standing before him now and he couldn’t deny that he hated the guy but he knew that he wasn’t going to let that hatred cloud his judgement now. “I knew I wouldn’t be the only one but you won’t be able to go after any more now. As careful as you thought you were being it wasn’t careful enough considering you got yourself caught,” Scott warned. The guy was cocky, that much was obvious, but soon enough he would realise just how much trouble he was in. “There was no way I ever would have agreed to what they wanted and I bet a lot of others wouldn’t either.” Scott knew that he would never align himself with Klaus and it was the same for his pack. Klaus had a reputation around Mystic Falls and he wouldn’t be surprised if there were a lot of other werewolves who would rather stay far away from him as well. “He won’t get that chance,” he said, his voice full of confidence as he spoke. Chris’ suggestion was a good one and the truth was that it was one that Scott was grateful for. “Honestly, you didn’t see the look on his face when he and the others attacked me. This wasn’t just about him wanting to impress Klaus, he enjoyed thinking that he and his friends were killing me. I think living under the watch of other hunters so he can’t hurt anyone else is just what he needs.”CHRIS ARGENT

He wasn’t his father. There’d been a time when he wouldn’t have even thought to make that clarification but given what he’d discovered about Gerard, how far from the path their family had first been set upon in France, and what had happened with Kate, Chris felt like it needed to be said. To be proved. He had seen Allison slipping in the same way after he’d had to help Victoria take her own life and it had started to tear something open inside of him. That wound had grown after Allison had died. She’d set them on the right path again, had make it clear in no uncertain terms that all they would do was protect those who could not protect themselves. No more hunting those who hunted them, not that the statement had covered half of what Gerard and Kate had done in the name of the code. This wasn’t about eradication, grinding out those things that were no longer human. It was about saving those who had unwittingly found themselves caught up in this.
Once upon a time that had been Scott and his friends. Peter’s bite hadn’t changed the fact that none of them should have been involved in what had happened in the first place. They’d been pulled into it by a man his sister had half burned to death and had remained caught up in the eye of that vicious storm. For Allison they’d come here to Mystic Falls to try and save her, and Chris knew he was never going to be able to thank them enough for that. They’d come and opened themselves up to so much more.
Including Niklaus Mikaelson.
The Original Hybrid hadn’t gone after Scott himself but those looking to curry favour with him had and they’d almost killed Scott in the process. Nobody would have blamed any of them for taking retribution after that but blindly killing wasn’t what they did anymore. The wolves who had died today had done so because they’d been the ones choosing to fight to the death. This one, Chris glanced at the werewolf in the cage, was the one who hadn’t. Now what happened to him was on Scott’s shoulders, as the person who’d nearly died at their hands.
Behind the bars of his cell Claude laughed. He pressed his face against the bars, teeth flashing at Scott in the way that his fangs would have done. He shook his head, fingers wrapped around the bars despite the wolfsbane laced in them. ”You think whatever you’re gonna do is gonna stop me? Klaus is gonna take me on and then you’ll pay kid. Both of you.” A reward Chris knew the wolf wouldn’t get. Niklaus Mikaelson was looking to build an army but he wasn’t stupid, he wouldn’t recruit the stupid.
Chris crossed his arms over his chest, his expression grim around the edges. Scott was a true alpha, had risen up from beta by force of will and character alone. He never would’ve given in to what Claude and his people had tried to force on him. Wouldn’t become what Niklaus Mikaelson would want him to be either. ”Not willingly. Other wolves have turned up dead. Some of them are probably the ones who turned Claude and his people down the way you did.” It hadn’t been taken well. Scott’s admission that they looked like they were enjoying what they had done to him just confirmed it. At one time he wouldn’t have hesitated to make sure Claude had zero chance of hurting anybody again but the times had changed. Blue eyes cut to Claude as Scott’s confidence built. ”He won’t get the chance to enjoy it again,” he promised. ”I can arrange someone to take him. You want to know how it goes?” He wasn’t sure Scott would want the details. He’d always tried to keep his hands as clean as possible in all of this, a true alpha by honour as much as anything else.
