An empty house had once been something to celebrate. A chance to take a night off from work, from husband and fatherly duties and just clear his mind. A half decent book, a glass of Scotch, the sort of peace and quiet that rarely descended with a teenaged girl in the house. Bliss once and now his own personal Hell. Now an empty house was a chance for the vacuum inside of him to draw in a little more of the already hollowed center of him, slowly dissolving everything he’d once been. Restless tonight, Chris had needed to escape. Flipping closed the book he’d been reading on demons he’d pushed to his feet, walking out of the study without a single look back. The walls were already closed in, tight enough to steal his breath without Allison’s presence in the house to have him sucking deep on a life he had thought gone again.
That had been an hour ago. Cool blue eyes had studied the road as he’d driven through town, the wedding ring he still wore on his left hand tapping restlessly against the leather coated steering wheel as he guided the truck through the streets that had become familiar since Scott and the others had summoned him here with the news that Allison was alive again. His daughter was out on those streets or tucked up in one of those idyllic looking homes, with a friend, or so that was the message he’d received. The friend’s name hadn’t been disclosed but he trusted his daughter, Chris just wasn’t sure he trusted everybody else in this town yet. There were enough stories splashed across the front page of the Courier to leave him suspicious over just how many supernaturals in Mystic Falls could be trusted. Beyond Scott’s pack and those he’d heard had helped them when one of the new werewolves had been taken, there were few here he could say weren’t likely to end up at the end of a gun or blade eventually. Not the life he wanted for him or Allison, especially not after they’d gone through, but he’d come to realise that there was no stepping back and letting the world go to hell, not while there was still Argent blood pumping through his veins.
Those blue eyes narrowed, sweeping the sidewalk as he pulled up outside of Campbell’s and climbed out of the truck. There’d been a chance he would’ve found Allison at the Grill if he’d headed there but what he hadn’t wanted was to sit and watch all those happy little families sitting around tables, enjoying an early dinner before they’d headed home for homework, for family time. Happy little reminders of what had once been but was no more. The bar was better - a beer over dinner, maybe a few minutes of talk with the owner or her bar staff and then once the nerves had settled under his skin. Right now they continuing to jump, the silence that had been eating him alive at the apartment there in his bones until he pushed the door to Campbell’s open and let the noise wash over him. For a weekday evening it was busy enough, the majority of the tables taken, just a couple of seats left at the bar. Chris eased towards one, furthest from the door, a wall shielding one side of him at least. He tipped his head towards the person sitting next to it as he reached it. ”This taken?” There were plenty of others if it was but long ingrained instinct had him heading for the seat for a reason.

For a long time Nate had never thought that he would leave Chicago. He was born and raised in the city and it had been easier to stay there when he graduated than it was to uproot Leanne and start over somewhere new. He hadn’t followed in the footsteps of his friends and gone to college, it had never really been on the cards for him. After becoming an orphan for the second time at fourteen years old when his grandparents died he and Leanne had found themselves being put into the system. It hadn’t been miserable for them like it had been known to be for others, they had been fortunate enough to have been placed in the same group home and they had fought to stay together. There was a time when he had urged Leanne to let herself be adopted so that she could have a normal life but she had refused to leave him behind and they had stuck together ever since. He knew now that they were better off when they were together and he had sworn to do whatever he had to in order to make sure that Leanne got to have the kind of life that he hadn’t been able to. He wanted her to have the chance to go to college if that was what she wanted and he also wanted her to have the chance to do everything else that she wanted to do. He was happy working on the police force but he occasionally found himself wondering what his life might have been like if things had worked out differently. He didn’t regret making the choice to become Leanne’s legal guardian and get a job as soon as he graduated from high school though as it meant that they had been able to stay together and he knew that he was never going to regret that. Things had changed for them now, they had moved from Chicago to Mystic Falls after being abducted and experimented on but Nate had settled in and he was pretty sure that Leanne had as well. That day his shift had finished and since he knew that he would be heading home to an empty house otherwise given that Leanne was out he had decided to go out for a drink with a couple of friends from work. Soon enough they had to head home but Nate wasn’t ready to do that just yet so he decided to stick around. They had opted for going to Campbell’s Bar rather than the Grill which was a usual haunt for a lot of people in town but if he was honest he liked the bar so it had made a nice change. Ordering himself another drink after he found himself left alone, it wasn’t long before a voice came from beside him asking if the seat next to him was taken. “Help yourself,” he said, taking a sip of his drink before turning to face the guy that had just joined him. “You’re Allison’s dad, right?” he asked. It had been a long time since Nate had last seen him, in fact it had been in Chicago a few years ago, but he had always been good at remembering faces so he hoped that he had the right person. Allison had told him about her dad after the two of them had reunited in Mystic Falls but Nate wasn’t sure whether the guy was aware that the two of them had been spending time together. CHRIS ARGENT

Opportunity had almost been a dirty word for Gerard. Something to be taken advantage of in the foulest ways. It had been opportunity that had parked Jackson in his kanima form in front of him, opportunity that had allowed him to blind Deucalion and opportunity that had almost allowed him to become a werewolf. That opportunity would have rid him of the cancer that had been eating his already corrupt body from the inside out but it would have left them with a far bigger problem on their hands. Gerard would have had the sort of power that might’ve left him unstoppable. The Argents wouldn’t have returned peace to Mystic Falls, not even the short lived kind, they would have assured that the streets would run with blood. Opportunity had taken on a different meaning with Gerard out of the picture. While he’d sat in a nursing home, continually choking on the blood fluid that was as dark as his soul, Allison had proved that opportunity could mean something far more. A clean slate, a fresh start, one that almost hadn’t continued on after he’d lost her. They’d pulled him back, Scott and the others, refusing to allow him to sink back into that abyss. Chris knew there was no way he’d ever be able to thank for it, except for maybe by taking that opportunity and doing something right with it.
Now, he was pretty sure that Allison wouldn’t have said this was the sort of thing he should’ve been doing with that opportunity but seeing Nathan’s familiar face turning in his direction as he took the man at his word and slid onto the stool next to him. Allison had mentioned old friends from Chicago without going into too much detail. Probably, Chris thought, shooting the guy a smile, because her old friend from Chicago had grown into a strapping man in the years that they’d been gone and despite the trust he had in his daughter Allison had known he wouldn’t be blind. Nathan had the sort of golden boy good looks that would appeal to practically every teenaged girl, his daughter included. Inclining his head, Chris extended his hand. ”Guilty as charged,” he said, amusement in his voice. ”Chris and if my memory’s not failing me, it’s Nathan right? Leanne’s big brother?” Seeing the bartender approach, Chris turned a congenial smile on them, gesturing towards Nathan’s glass. ”Another of whatever he’s drinking, a beer and …” Blue eyes narrowed, rapidly scanning down the menu at his elbow. ”…a steak sandwich, thanks. Allison said some old friends were in town, she just didn’t tell me who.” Without skipping a beat, Chris glanced sideways along the bar. He wasn’t kicking Allison under the bus exactly but he wasn’t above using what his daughter had said to him so ephemerally to hear what he wanted.

Nate hadn’t known what was going to happen when he and Leanne decided to leave their old lives in Chicago behind them and start over in Mystic Falls. He knew that they had both been taken there for a reason and he also knew that they had both been changed for good. Now instead of turning into a wolf with every full moon he turned into a lion and his sister turned into a coyote even though he knew that she hadn’t been born that way and she couldn’t recall ever having been bitten the way he had. It didn’t make any sense and they had decided to stick around so that they could try and figure out what had happened to both of them but the truth was that they still weren’t any closer to figuring out what was going on in the town. He knew that he wasn’t going to give up, though, and he was pretty sure that Leanne wasn’t either. A couple of faces from their past had turned up in the town which definitely made things a lot easier, Dylan was there so Nate had a friend that he could count on and Allison was there as well. Both were definitely a pleasant surprise albeit for very different reasons. He had never told anyone about the crush he’d had on Allison when they were in Chicago but it seemed that hadn’t gone away like he had thought that it had. Those feelings were still there but he knew better than to act on them and ruin their friendship. He was older than Allison was and he was in a position of power given that he was a cop so the last thing he ever wanted was to feel like he was taking advantage. Asking her dad to join him probably wasn’t the best idea he’d ever had in case he let something slip but Chris had asked if the seat was free and Nate had known that lying to him wasn’t an option so he knew that he just had to deal with it. “That’s right, it’s good to see you again,” Nate said sincerely as he lifted his glass to his lips and took a sip. Chris and Victoria had kept an eye on the two girls when he wasn’t able to be there for them as well so he had known the two of them to an extent but not properly. “Thanks,” he said as Chris ordered him another drink before placing his own order. “Next round’s on me.” As Chris spoke again, Nate felt a smile work its way across his face. “Leanne is in town too but she’s with friends at the moment. I’m not sure about anyone else Allison might have known from Chicago but I know a lot of her friends from Beacon Hills are here,” he explained although the latter at least was something that Chris was bound to know already anyway. He knew that Allison and her dad were hunters and he knew that they followed their own code but he still wasn’t sure how her dad would feel about her hanging out with him if he knew the truth about what he was so Nate knew to tread carefully. “Allison told me about Victoria, I’m so sorry for your loss,” he said sincerely as he took another sip of his drink. Even before Marie-Jeanne had shown up in Mystic Falls Chris had known that there was something in this town that would let the past remain just that. Chris hadn’t wanted to dig too deeply into why the demon had brought Allison here at first, it had been enough that his daughter was back, that there were people here who could help her. Once she was back and he had a daughter to protect again it had been impossible to try and ignore. Beacon Hills had been a town that had lived up to its name for decades, Mystic Falls was one that did the same. Somehow people found their way here, their lives intersecting, reconnecting, in ways that never should’ve been able to happen. The cynic in him wanted to see a problem with it but how could he when the town had given him back so much? Because he was who he was, Chris thought with a sigh. It was why he’d tried to dig when Allison had told him that some old friends had turned up in town. It could’ve been a blessing, as Marie-Jeanne’s resurrection had been, but there was that faint chance that the past catching up to them again here would be the straw that finally broke the camel’s back. One ounce of his past too much, a tip of the scales in the sort of direction that meant the family would have to step up and put themselves on the line again. Chances were this was going to be another blessing but if it wasn’t, Chris wasn’t so sure he’d manage that sort of loss again.
The first time it had broken him enough that he’d have spent entire days in bars not so different from this one. Hidden by the shadows, feeling his emotions slowly dull from the burn of the alcohol through his system. It had taken his daughter’s friends to pull him out of that, to push him back towards the man he’d once been. Now it was just an evening at a loose end that suddenly wasn’t so loose anymore. The pieces were falling into place quickly, cynicism edging away to keen interest as he realized just who his daughter hadn’t entirely told him about. Chris studied the young man as he slid onto his stool, his eyes crinkling faintly at the corners as he aimed a smile at him. ”You too,” he said honestly. ”Although I didn’t expect our paths would be crossing again. It’s pretty far from home for you.” For both of them. This was an entire continent away from Beacon Hills. At the bartender’s approach Chris ordered for himself, added another drink for Nathan. He hadn’t pushed for it but the fact that Nathan said the next round was on him had Chris nodding to him. ”Appreciated.” At the very least it would give him time to figure out just how their paths had crossed in this tiny little blip on a very big map. Chris hooked a heel over the rail of the stool, rolling up the sleeves of his shirt. ”You’ll have to send her my regards. I’m guessing it was just you and your sister she was talking about. I don’t know if she ever got close enough to anybody else in Chicago to still be calling them friends now.” At the mention of her friends from Beacon Hills being here Chris nodded briefly, sucking in a breath. ”They moved here together,” he confirmed. For his daughter, although he wasn’t about to go telegraphing the truth of that now. As it was it was hard enough to keep his poker face up when Nathan said that Allison had told him about the loss of her mom. He dropped his head, swallowing hard as he took the beer the bartender returned with. ”Thank you,” Chris said hoarsely. ”It was tragic. I’m glad Allison has friends she can talk about it with.” He doubted Allison had told Nathan how it had happened, at least he hoped she hadn’t. The story had been created to keep them all safe.

Nate hadn’t thought that he would end up running into anyone that he knew when he and Leanne decided to make the move to Mystic Falls permanent but that was exactly what had happened. He had encountered Allison after his first full moon in the town and it turned out that Dylan was there too. Deep down Nate had known that a fresh start after losing everyone they cared about in Chicago would probably do them both the world of good but he couldn’t deny that it was a relief to have some familiar faces around as well. Getting Allison to open up to him about everything that had happened after she had left Chicago wasn’t easy but in the end she had told him what had happened and for that he was grateful. He knew that she had been through something awful but if anything it seemed to have just made her a lot stronger for it and he couldn’t help but admire her for that. Nate wanted it to be possible for the same to be said for him after everything that he had been through and he was doing his best to make it happen. So far he liked Mystic Falls, the people seemed pretty decent and if he was honest he was starting to feel like he was settling into life in the small town after growing up in Chicago. He couldn’t deny that even with all of the disappearances going on in the town he still felt more at home there than he had done in Chicago for a long time so he honestly hoped that the move would be good for both of them in the long run. He hadn’t planned on running into Allison’s dad that day but he wasn’t sure that it was a bad thing. Allison meant a lot to him and even though Nate had a feeling that Chris wouldn’t like any guy that got close to his daughter he still wanted to try and get along with him for her sake. “It is but a fresh start is what we both needed so it’ll be good for us,” he admitted, hoping that those words were true. “So much happened in Chicago so it’s good to leave that behind.” Nate wasn’t sure how much Allison had told her dad about his and Leanne’s past or how it had ended up being just the two of them and he wasn’t sure whether he was ready to talk about it just yet either. “Mystic Falls is pretty far from home for you too although I understand that you moved around a lot. Are the two of you planning on sticking around?” It wasn’t something that he and Allison had talked about but he hoped that they would be. Taking a sip of his drink, Nate nodded as Chris spoke again. “I will. Another friend from Chicago is here too but I’m not sure Allison knew him,” he admitted. Dylan had been Nate’s friend more than Leanne’s so he had a feeling that Dylan and Allison hadn’t talked too much back in Chicago, if at all. “That makes sense. She seems happy so I’m glad everything has worked out.” He knew that he could come clean and admit that Allison had told him what had happened to her and why her friends had moved to Mystic Falls but her dad was a hunter and even though he knew that Chris and Allison followed the same code he still wouldn’t be surprised if the last thing the guy wanted was another werecreature spending time with his daughter, let alone one that had been turned into something else entirely. “She does but it can’t have been easy for you either so if you need to talk to someone I’m around.” Nate knew all too well what it was like to lose people he loved and it really wasn’t something that he would wish on anyone. Bottling it up only made it worse so he hoped that Chris would take him up on it if he needed to. CHRIS ARGENT

There’d always been a tone to Allison’s voice when she desperately wanted him to avoid being that dad. Chris knew that there were times he’d taken the protective act way too far, managing to mortify his daughter on more than one occasion. It had been for her safety and he’d clung onto that idea until it was clear Allison was way too immersed in the supernatural world for him to keep the pretense up. She was still his little girl and he would always watch out for her, but his little girl wasn’t so little anymore. Allison had lost her mom, watched her aunt and grandfather reveal their monstrosity, she’d died. After all of that there wasn’t any fooling himself into thinking he could just cover her ears and keep her safe anymore. Allison was old enough to pick her friends well and to his eternal blood boiling, pick those she cared for more. Until Scott that was a part of her life that had absolutely been kept from him. Times had changed though, Scott had become a friend … to both of them … and if others had moved into that limelight since Allison had very carefully kept that from him too. Their lives were moving on and Chris knew he had to go with that tide instead of allowing himself to remain in the tangled undertow of what had been. He was trying, honestly, not that it was easy at times. A widower putting one foot in front of the other and moving onto dry land.
There was still enough of that brackish water clinging to him that Chris still had questions though. The ones about friends from Chicago. Allison had told him about Leanne and her brother, not trusting at first that he remembered anything about her friends in Chicago. Admittedly it had been a time before he’d looked at anything other than whether or not her friends were going to be a danger to her. Back then Nathan and sister hadn’t been any sort of threat, these days there was a far bigger grey area that their lives occupied. Chris’ eyes crinkled at the corner as he glanced aside at Nathan. ”That seems like the impetus for a lot of moves,” Chris said lightly. Their own in a way, although at the time it had been more about rescuing Allison that starting over. That had come afterwards. Letting out a long breath, Chris moistened his lips. ”We are,” he managed finally. The group plan had been to stay put, to give the kids stability while they went through college. After that … who knew. The others hadn’t lived the same sort of life that the Argents always had. ”Allison didn’t tell me there were others here too, although, as she reminded me. I didn’t know all that many of her friends then.” His throat working for a moment at the thought of everything that had happened since, Chris looked away to watch the bartender approach. ”That makes two of us,” Chris said softly. ”Allison deserves a settled life, somewhere to be happy.” Beacon Hills hadn’t allowed much of that but this was their fresh start. Blue eyes narrowed slightly at Nathan’s sympathy and his offer of an ear to bend when needed. Chris paused for a second and then nodded. ”That goes both ways. I’m sure Allison thinks I’m selectively deaf but you ever need anybody to talk to I’ll hear. So, are you at Whitmore? Allison didn’t say what it was you did.” Probably another purposeful oversight on his daughter’s part, Christ thought as he sipped his beer. She’d cut off the conversation about her friends pretty quickly the other night.

Nate had grown used to how things were in Mystic Falls during the time he had been there and it had to be said that despite everything that had happened he liked the town. Before moving there he hadn’t known any different than life in Chicago, he was born and raised there by his parents and grandparents and after they were all gone he and Leanne had lived in various different group homes. The only constant either of them had ever had was each other and it had resulted in the two of them being really close and Nate knew that he would never leave her behind. He had done his best to look out for her from the day she was born and he had urged her to let a family adopt her so that she could have a better life but she had refused to leave him so they at least had that in common. They still didn’t know who was responsible for bringing them to Mystic Falls in the first place or why they had been brought to this town in particular but Nate knew that the only way they were going to find out was by sticking around. They could have gone back to Chicago and forgotten all about this but the truth was that aside from a few friends there really hadn’t been anything left for the two of them there. In a way being able to start over was a relief and it gave them the chance to get away from all of the bad memories they had left behind in Chicago and Nate was trying to make the most of it. He liked his job and he had made some friends among the people he worked with but there were still more people and more things about the town that he had yet to get to know and he wanted to change that when he could. It would have been easy enough to go home once his shift was over but since Leanne wasn’t going to be there he had adopted for going for a drink with a few friends from work but even though they’d all had to head home he hadn’t wanted to just yet. He wasn’t that keen on the idea of going home to an empty house so he knew that it wouldn’t hurt to stay at the bar for a while longer and return home closer to the time when Leanne should be back. There was just something about the silence that came with being at home alone that was a little disconcerting given what he knew about the town and he wasn’t in a hurry to experience it again just yet. Running into Allison’s dad while he was there wasn’t something that he had planned on but he knew that it wouldn’t hurt to see how he was doing. Allison had filled him in on what had happened since her family had moved away from Chicago and as difficult as it had been for her he knew that it had to have been just as bad for her dad. “Sometimes a fresh start can be a good thing,” Nate shrugged as he lifted his glass to his lips and took a sip. He hadn’t known that he had needed one until the opportunity presented itself but now he knew that he wanted to take it. “That’s good,” he admitted, glad that the plan was for the two of them to stick around. He had thought that Allison would have told him if there was a chance that she would end up moving on soon but he hadn’t known whether her dad was of the same mindset so it was good to know that he wasn’t planning on moving on either. “I’m not sure if she crossed paths with Dylan back then but Leanne and I were pleased to see her anyway.” It had been a nice surprise to say the least, especially for him. It had been a relief finding out that she knew about the supernatural world as well so having a friendly face around had definitely helped. “It sounds like you both do after what you went through,” he offered as he took another sip of his drink. A loss like that was never easy to move on from but Chris hadn’t just lost his wife, he had lost his daughter for a while as well and Nate couldn’t even begin to imagine how difficult that must have been. “I’ll remember that, thanks,” he grinned before shaking his head as Chris asked if he was at Whitmore. “I never made it to college. After graduation I knew I had to get a job so I could take care of Leanne and myself so I joined the police force in Chicago and I transferred here when we decided to make the move,” he explained. “How about you, what do you do?”CHRIS ARGENT

If there was one thing that was easier here than back in Beacon Hills it was not seeing the sympathy in the eyes of everybody looking at him. Taking Isaac to Paris after Allison’s death had been a way to avoid them. Word had gotten around about what had happened to Victoria, what she had wanted them to know of it anyway, more still knew that Allison had died. The looks had drifted his way everywhere, every face on the street turning to his before their gaze skittered away, elderly women in the grocery store offering sympathy. None of them had known the truth, almost all that had felt the same loss for his daughter at least. In Mystic Falls all the locals knew was that he was a single father raising his daughter alone here. They had no clue who the Argents were, what they had done to a town in the name of eradicating a supernatural scourge. It was a relief in a way, although moving on meant leaving his wife behind. Despite all that had happened between them, what Victoria had tried to do to Scott at the end, he had love her with his entire heart. Chris appreciated the sympathy Allison’s friend had offered, someone remembered his wife at least. He couldn’t linger over it, they were moving on with their lives, with the help of Marie and the pack, with Melissa’s help too. A corner of Chris’ mouth twitched at the thought of her. Her husband was still out there somewhere but the move was a fresh start for her too. For all of them. With Allison free of the demon and out of her coma he’d encouraged herself to move on with her life. It was time he did too.
Him drinking with her old friend probably wasn’t how Allison wanted him to start doing that but some remnant of the overly protective father remained. It had driven him to enquire about which friend was here back when Allison had said someone from Chicago was in Mystic Falls and to talk to Nathan now. Chris drew in a deep breath through his nose as he glanced down at his own glass. ”It can be,” he agreed and they were getting that now. A faint smile tugged at Chris’ lips as he lifted the glass to them. ”It’ll be better all around if I can convince Allison that Whitmore is worth four more years of being in school.” His daughter had already told him that she hadn’t applied, time was growing short and the last thing he wanted to see was Allison missing out on an opportunity like that. The constant moves had already held her back. Making a low sound in his throat, Chris nodded. ”She was definitely pleased to see the two of you too,” he promised. Blue eyes cut aside as he said it, dropping at the continued sympathy from Nathan. He let out a low sound, nodding slightly. ”Maybe.” What he deserved mattered far less than what Allison did. He’d committed crimes along the way, earning his fate but Allison … all she’d tried to do was help her friends and she’d lost her life for it. Chris knew he couldn’t come clean about that here, Nathan wasn’t a part of that world, he was a kid who life had torn strips from in the normal human way. ”Anytime,” Chris rasped. Blue eyes rose as the bartender returned. He went silent as the plate with the sandwich on was set in front of him, only finding his voice when the woman had left again. ”That’s a job with a lot of responsibility. Solid, pays decently.” In this town it was just about as dangerous as could be. One corner of Chris’ mouth curled faintly as he shook salt on the fries. ”I’m the guy selling weapons to your boss. I’m an arms dealer for the government and law enforcement.” In the past that had been enough to put off most teenaged boys sniffing anywhere near his daughter.

Nate wasn’t entirely sure what Allison would make of the fact that he was having a drink with her dad but he hoped it couldn’t hurt. Drinking alone was never a good thing and Nate had been doing just that before Chris had shown up given that his friends from work had all had to head home so in a way it was good to have some company now. Nate couldn’t deny that he liked Allison, something had changed between them from the day that she found him in the woods after his first full moon in Mystic Falls. Back when they were both living in Chicago he had always seen her as his younger sister’s best friend but now he saw her as something much more than that. He hadn’t acted on it and he wasn’t sure if he ever would considering that he was pretty sure that it was a one sided thing but he knew that he wasn’t going to let it stop him from spending time with Allison anyway so he knew that he wanted his dad to like him if that was even possible. Nate knew that it probably seemed a little strange, after all he was a few years older than Allison was, but he had never been the kind of guy to take advantage of anyone and he knew that he never would be. All he wanted was for Allison to be happy just like he did with Leanne and if that meant that he had to step into the protective friend role with her too then he knew that he would do it. He had lost count of the amount of times that he had driven Leanne and Allison around while they were living in Chicago and when he wasn’t the one doing it then it was Chris or Victoria so he had known the two of them in a way at least. “I’m trying to do the same with Leanne. I never made it to college but I don’t want our history to hold her back,” Nate admitted as he lifted his glass to his lips and took a seat. He wasn’t sure just how much about their past Allison had told her dad but he wanted to make sure that Leanne had all of the opportunities that he hadn’t been able to take. He didn’t want his little sister to miss out on anything and he could definitely understand why Chris felt the same way about Allison. She had been through so much already and even though college might not seem important to her now there was every chance that it might change so he knew that he didn’t want her to end up with any regrets. “The feeling is mutual,” he nodded. Leanne had been gutted when Allison had moved away and deep down he had been too so it was good to know that she was in town and that she was planning on sticking around at least for a while. Looking over at Chris as he sounded almost unsure, Nate’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. He hadn’t planned on letting the guy know how much Allison had told him or that he was a part of the supernatural world himself now but he couldn’t shake the feeling that the guy could use someone to talk to so he took another sip of his drink before setting his glass back down in front of him. “There’s no maybe about it. Allison told me everything and you both definitely deserve better,” he said before glancing at Chris and letting his eyes flash yellow so the guy would know why she had told him everything. “I wanted a job that would let me help people and being able to protect my sister is a bonus,” he admitted. That was all that he had ever wanted to do and the training he had gone through had put him in a much better position of keeping her safe. “Remind me never to get on the wrong side of you,” he chuckled as Chris told him what had did. Nate knew that the guy wasn’t like most hunters, at least not anymore. Allison had also filled him in on the new code they followed so he knew that as long as he didn’t hurt anyone then the two of them shouldn’t have a problem although he wasn’t sure just how Chris would feel about another werecreature being in his daughter’s life. Once upon a time a Y chromosome and a proximity to Allison had been all it had taken for him to start playing the protective dad. It wasn’t exclusively a matter of him trying to protect his daughters from teenaged boys, although there was certainly an element of that. Being a father meant that you wanted to shield your child as much as possible. Perhaps between them he and Victoria had taken it a step too far but when you were already paranoid over one thing, that had a tendency to spill over. Chris knew that Allison would’ve preferred if her parents had been a little more relaxed with matters but once the truth came to light … once they’d lost Victoria, he liked to think that she’d started to understand what he’d been doing all those years. It didn’t entirely excuse the threats he’d made to Scott but given the boy’s propensity for ignoring that sort of thing when it came to Allison, it was no surprise they’d been made in the first place. Gradually he’d come to like the kid, respect probably coming in first. Scott hadn’t left him to wallow in his grief when Allison had been killed, he’d dragged him out of it inch by inch, reminding him of what Allison had been trying to get the family to do. The decent kid had become a good man, maybe forced to grow up a little too quickly thanks to what had happened with Peter Hale, but he hadn’t let the power he had within himself go to his head. From what he remembered of the man next to him, it had been similar with Nathan, albeit without the werewolf bite. He’d been raising his little sister after the loss of their family.
The location might’ve been different but Nathan was certainly still doing that. Chris made a low sound in his throat as Nate admitted he was trying to give his sister the opportunity to go to college after he hadn’t managed it himself. Gerard hadn’t exactly been the sort to focus on his children’s academic future. It had been all about hunting, it was another thing he’d wanted to change for Allison. ”College isn’t everything but it is an opportunity,” he admitted. ”Has Leanne applied to anywhere yet?” If she had perhaps there was a chance she could encourage Allison to do the same. She’d made it clear to him that she didn’t want to go but it wouldn’t stop him from encouraging her to at least give school a chance. Thanks to what had happened in Mystic Falls she’d already lost so much time. Blue eyes cut aside as Nathan nodded back at him. He wanted Allison to have friends around, to be able to build the life here that she hadn’t had the opportunity to before.
Everything. Most wouldn’t have fixed on the word the way he did but in their world everything could mean so much more. The flash of Nathan’s eyes confirmed it. Werewolf, a shifter of some sort at least. Chris paused, his eyes on Nathan’s before he nodded again, tapping his fingers lightly on the bar. ”It seems she didn’t tell me everything,” he murmured back. ”Is that a new development?” It was the sort of question Allison would’ve cried dad over but he wanted to know if he’d missed something so big back then. Chris plucked up a fry, chewing on it thoughtfully as Nathan admitted protecting his sister thanks to the job was a bonus. ”Police work will definitely let you do that, especially here. You went to the academy in Chicago?” It was a department he still had connections in, although for Allison’s sake he wouldn’t go poking that bear. Chris’ lips curled into a bigger smile as he worked his fingers around his sandwich and lifted it. ”A little worried that I’m carrying a bazooka in the back of the truck to deal with the people who are spending time with my daughter?” His tone was fake serious, one brow rising. Allison would’ve been mortified but luckily she wasn’t here to hear him.

Moving to Mystic Falls was meant to be a fresh start for both Nate and Leanne. It wasn’t planned and if he was honest he wasn’t sure that they would have made the move if they hadn’t both been taken from their home in Chicago and brought to Mystic Falls in the first place since they’d both had lives in the city but when they’d decided to move Nate had realised that perhaps it was what they both needed after all. They had lost so many people during the time they had lived in Chicago, first their mom had died and their dad left, then they lost their grandparents as well. One thing Nate had come to realise was that the only family he had left that he could count on was Leanne and even though he had tried to convince her to let herself be adopted so that she could have a better chance at having a good life she had refused and instead chosen to stay with them. It hadn’t been easy for them to stay together while they were in the foster care system but over time those who worked at the group home they were in had come to realise that they weren’t going to go anywhere without each other and they had made sure to keep that in mind while kids were coming and going from the home. As time went on they had ended up losing not just the rest of their family but Leanne had lost Allison when she moved away and Nate had lost his partner during the attack that had turned him into a werewolf so starting over had seemed like a good thing to do for both of them. Being able to transfer to the police department in Mystic Falls had made it easier and so did knowing that Allison and a few other familiar faces from their past were in town as well. Talking to her dad might end up being a bad idea but Nate knew how important Chris was to Allison so he knew that it would be a lot easier if they were able to get along. “It isn’t for everyone but Allison has always had a good head on her shoulders so I’m sure she’ll figure it out,” Nate offered. He knew that Allison would figure out what was right for her sooner or later and he wouldn’t be surprised if Chris knew that as well. “Leanne has applied to a few places but I’m hoping she’ll stay close to home,” he admitted. After everything that had happened he wanted to keep her close if he could and he hoped that she wouldn’t want to go too far either. Nate could see the recognition in Chris’ face as he let his eyes change colour, gold to signify that he hadn’t taken a life, and as he asked if it was a new development, Nate nodded. “It happened a few months ago. My partner and I were on a call and we were attacked. I survived but I was bitten while my partner didn’t make it,” he explained. “That’s why Leanne and I moved here. A couple of months after that we were taken from our home and brought here and since then I’ve been turning into a lion instead of a wolf each full moon,” he continued. It was something that he had only told Leanne and Allison so far but he knew that there wasn’t any need to hide the truth from Allison’s dad since he would no doubt find out sooner or later if he and Allison carried on spending time together so he knew that it would be better to be upfront about it now. “Yeah, I did,” he confirmed as Chris asked if he went to the academy in Chicago. Taking a sip of his drink, Nate couldn’t help but laugh as he spoke again. “A few years ago that might have scared me but now it is more like I know I know that if I make a wrong move then you could either hunt me down or tell my boss what I am,” he shrugged, knowing that the outcome of either scenario wouldn’t be good for him. There’d been few times in their lives that he would’ve said he wasn’t proud of his daughter. When he hadn’t been it had always been when she’d been acting most unlike herself, swayed by those around her in a way that Kate had been. Where the two of them had differed was that Allison had taken what had been said to her in those moments to heart. She hadn’t used it to drive herself further away from the sweet kid she’d been. Kate had slowly allowed that to poison her instead, Gerard’s tough love lessons leaving her a vindictive paper cut out of who she’d been as a child, someone without conscience who had done everything possible to slaughter those who hadn’t deserved it. Chris knew that he hadn’t been perfect as a hunter, he’d allowed his father to sway him too and his prejudice to take him over at times but despite it all he’d managed to hold on to himself through it all. He knew he had others to thank for that and Allison had to have felt the same when they’d managed to get that thing out of her. The people who’d cared about her had fought tooth and nail to free her from that horror and they hadn’t stopped once it was gone. They’d brought him back here to be with his daughter, reaching out as soon as they had news of her, they’d stayed by her bedside in those long months when it had looked like all that they would have left of her was the empty shell that the demon had inhabited and when, finally, Henrik had been able to come around they’d been there to help support her through the aftershocks of all that had happened. For that he was proud of all of them.
It took an inner strength to get through that, an inner strength for Allison to make it clear to him that she wasn’t going to college either. Once she wouldn’t have opened up and told him that but the foreboding presence he’d once been in their home had started to clear. Chris’ lips curled at Nate’s description of her, slowly bobbing his head. ”Too good sometimes. You’re right though, whatever happens, she’ll figure it out.” With his help and that of her friends. From what he’d gathered from Noah and Melissa the other kids were heading there anyway, mostly to Whitmore by the looks of things. Close enough to Mystic Falls to leave them all relieved. ”She could do a lot worse than Whitmore by all accounts.” He imagined Nate would be happy having his sister that close too. Especially since their lives had obviously been touched by the supernatural too, something that Allison hadn’t told him. Chris took a pull on his beer as he listened to Nate start to tell him the story of how he’d been turned. He wiped the back of his hand over his mouth, his eyes cutting back to the young man. ”I’m sorry to hear that,” he murmured. The moment he heard that they’d been brought here the beer started to sour in his stomach. ”Has Leanne changed too?” he asked diplomatically. ”A few have found themselves here, same as you. Did Allison mention Derek Hale to you?” Derek had gone missing in Mystic Falls, showing up here, buried in a tomb months later. As a cop Nathan had probably seen that sort of thing happen here in town. He nodded at Nate’s confirmation and couldn’t help but play on his reputation as he bit into his burger. Nate took it in the way it had been meant at least. ”You wouldn’t be the first to say that. I wouldn’t rat you out to your boss.” He hadn’t said he wouldn’t hunt him down himself though. They protected those who couldn’t protect themselves but there were still those out there who stepped over the line – intentionally or not.

Nate hadn’t thought that his life would turn out the way that it had done, he had felt certain that he and Leanne would end up staying in Chicago, that she would go off to college and he would start working his way up through the police department, but everything had changed the day that the two of them were taken from their home and brought to Mystic Falls. Nate knew that they could have gone back to Chicago and pretended that nothing had happened but the truth was that aside from a few friends they didn’t really have anyone tying them to the city. He hadn’t known what a fresh start was what he’d needed until the chance had come along to have one and he didn’t regret taking it for a minute. With all of their family gone he and Leanne only had each other but since making their way to Mystic Falls Nate had been reunited with Allison and Dylan and he hoped that Leanne had found people that she could count on too. They had left so much heartache behind them in Chicago, first their mom had died, their dad left and then their grandparents died, so it was good to get away from all of that. Now they weren’t the kids that had grown up in foster care and never left Chicago and Nate wasn’t the guy that had lost his partner and almost been killed on a call any longer, they were whoever they wanted to be and their lives were their own to do with what they wanted so even though he knew that things should have been different, some good had come of what had happened to bring them to Mystic Falls at least. Talking to Allison’s dad might not end up being such a good idea but at the end of the day Nate cared about Allison and he had been spending more and more time with her lately so it was important to him that her dad liked him. Nate had never done the whole meet the parents thing before and he knew that this was a little unconventional but that didn’t matter. He was aware that there was an age difference between him and Allison, in fact it was something that played on his mind pretty often, but he also knew that she wasn’t like any other girl. She had been through so much and she had been a huge help to him since he’d arrived in town and he knew how much her dad meant to her so he hoped to find some common ground with the guy. “She always does,” Nate nodded as he lifted his glass to his lips and took a sip. Allison had always been one of the strongest people he had ever known and that hadn’t changed. She had a great group of friends around her now and even though he didn’t know any of them too well he could see that Allison cared about them and he was glad that she had people around who had her back. “It is a really good school,” Nate admitted. “I took Leanne on an open day there not too long ago and I don’t know about her but I was impressed by it,” he explained. Going to college had never been on the cards for Nate and he’d made his peace with that but he wanted Leanne to have a better life so he hoped that she would take the chance to go. “Thanks,” he nodded. “To be honest that’s one of the reasons why I wanted a fresh start. Back in Chicago everyone started looking at me differently after my partner died, here they only find out what happened if I choose to tell them,” he shrugged. He had known that there wasn’t any point in keeping the truth from Chris since he could have easily found out through Allison. As Chris asked if Leanne had changed too, Nate nodded. “She has. I never wanted her to get involved with this world herself but there wasn’t anything I could do.” He still felt bad about that even now but he knew that he couldn’t go back and change it no matter how much he might want to. He had sworn to himself that he would always protect her and he knew that he had failed but all he could do was try and help her through it now. “No, she hasn’t. Who is he?” he asked, genuinely curious now. He had heard about people disappearing and showing up in town and he had seen some strange things during his time there but he was still getting to grips with the supernatural side of it all so he knew that he would take any information that he could get. “But you would hunt me down, got it,” he nodded before smiling at the woman who brought his own meal over. He never would’ve imagined he’d end up a single father to a daughter who’d been brought back to life by a demon. If anything he’d always thought it would be the other way around, without the demon of course. He had been brought up a hunter, despite their constant moves that had been what he’d always done. Being an Argent meant he was well trained but even Gerard had been laid low by a teenaged werewolf. Things happened, people got hurt, a bite delivered a death sentence, no matter whose flesh the fangs had sunk deep into. Chris knew it could so easily have gone the other way and Victoria would’ve been the one trying to pick up the shattered pieces of their life, helping their daughter to live her life again. There were times when he’d been sure that she would’ve done a better job of it. There’d been so much strength in his wife, even at the end. She had died trying to do what she’d believed was best for their daughter, he hoped Allison never forgot that. The message of it might’ve been buried in his daughter’s hurt and that stinging sense of betrayal but it had been one from the heart all the same.
His own messages to his daughter in the same vein had a tendency to come out with the sort of sharp edge that had Allison bristling. Chris supposed it was because he’d been raised by a man who believed in making everything sound like an order, it was something he needed to work on changing though. Allison was an adult, she was old enough to make her own choices, even if they weren’t always going to be ones that he agreed with. A wry edge slipped into Chris’ smile as he glanced sideways at Nathan. ”Not always in a way I’d agree with,” he said dryly. He had to work on trusting her to do that though. She had him to lean on if things didn’t go the way she’d planned and he’d fight tooth and nail to change the things that went wrong for her .. .he had fought tooth and nail for her. It still didn’t mean that he wasn’t happy that she wasn’t going to go to college, not even with Whitmore right on the doorstep. Hopefully for him, Nate’s little sister would decide that Whitmore was for her. ”I was too,” Chris admitted. ”If Allison hadn’t gone through all she had I imagine she would’ve gone there with the others.” Things had been brutal though, his daughter losing so much time with all that had happened. And after all that, really what would Algebra or International Economics done for her?
The voice in his brain whispered a lot but he wasn’t the one studying. His own life was way past that, his past scarred, twisted. Nathan’s was too if what the young man was saying now was anything to go by. ”That’s understandable,” Chris said lightly, staring down into his glass. ”It’s also one of the reasons we decided to stay here. Back home Allison’s death was public knowledge, going back, trying to explain that … it was impossible.” There were the memories too, the blood staining his hands in the bedroom he and Victoria had shared, the funeral, the deaths that were on Kate and Gerard’s hands. It would’ve been easier to just draw a line under them and start again here. It wasn’t that easy though, things still happened here. The news that Leanne had been changed too drew a faintly wry smile on his lips. ”You can try and keep the people you love out of it all you want, sometimes they get drawn in any way.” Some were born to it. Chris straightened in his seat, shifting slightly uneasily. ”Someone like you, born to it though. He was taken, changed. Some friends of ours found him here.” Derek had been buried in a tomb, changed into a shapeshifter of a very different kind. He and Hale had come to an agreement before that, one with far more backstory than the one he was going to with Nathan now. ”It’s a blessing I don’t have to spell it out,” he said, his smile turning faintly feral for a moment. Nathan had obviously heard enough from his daughter to know what could happen. not.
