Sam Winchester:
After Sam and Dean's little unexpected meet up with the Yellow eyed demon and Lilith, Sam had a terrible thought that Azazel would use Ben against him. Sam and Dean vowed to never be used against each other by Azazel or Lilith. Sam refused to let them get their claws in him again or into Dean. They had too much involvement into their lives already and needed to stop meddling. That still didn't help Sam not be affected by they demon's words. Azazel had always been careful with the words he used. He had mentioned something about there always being some sort of hope for everyone and Sam had always hoped that not all Winchesters were cursed. Yes, it was too late for Sam and Dean but Ben still had a slight chance of a normal-ish life. He hadn't grown up in the life and he still had many years ahead of him.
Being a Winchester was a curse as the bloodline was both a legacy to the Men of Letters but it was also linked to Cain and that was the issue. Sam knew a Winchester could hold both Micheal or Lucifer and as Micheal was stuck in the cage using Adam as a host there was no chance that he would raise if the cage was opened. Lucifer however would use whatever means necessary to get out. He didn't want Ben being used against him or being used as Lucifer's vessel. Sam had seen first hand what Lucifer was capable of doing to a body and the mentality of a person. He had sent his own brother mad in the cage just for entertainment. He had also killed Gabriel as far as Sam was aware. He wouldn't let that monster get anywhere near to Ben as long as he could help it. He would do anything to stop Lucifer rising but if needs be he would say 'yes' to stop Ben from having to go through what he did.
Sam would go to warn Ben about Azazel's manipulative nature and the way he gets his hooks in in anyway he could. Sam would be damned if he let any more of his family become host to an archangel. Sam was already messed up and beyond saving Ben still had a chance even if it was a slim one.
The Winchester made his way to Ben's motel room and knocked rapidly on the door. Hoping he would be in. He just wanted to warn him and even if he had to be brutally honest and tell his nephew his deep secrets he would to make sure he never made the mistakes as him. He could see the similarities between him and Ben and he didn't want Ben to be naively led down the same dark path blindly that he had. He was dragged blindly down the path to Lucifer by Ruby, Azazel and Lilith since before he was born and he would do anything to make sure that no one else in his family would be manipulated like him to the slaughter. "Ben open up it's me, Sam. We need to talk." He had distanced himself from Ben in the past to make sure he didn't taint his soul or chances at life but now he would have to risk his superstitions.

It had been almost two years since Ben had first arrived in Mystic Falls and even though a lot had happened during that time the truth was that he still wasn’t in a hurry to leave the town. Since moving there he had managed to kill the vampire that had killed his mom, he had been reunited with Dean and finally found out that the guy was his dad, he had rekindled the spark he’d had with Hayden even though that had ended up heartache for him, he’d died and been brought back to life after his dad had made a deal with Crowley and he’d made friends. It would have been easy to run away after his dad brought him back and he knew that that was what Dean had done for a while but it had made Ben realise that he had people in his life worth fighting for. After losing his mom he had been on his own for the best part of four years before moving to Mystic Falls and during that time he had come to realise just how important it was to keep the people that he cared about close. He knew just how easily a life could be taken and he knew that he didn’t want to take any time that he had with the people he cared about for granted. He had spent years travelling the country on his own while he worked different cases and he had met a lot of different people during that time, some of whom were still a part of his life now and had shown up in Mystic Falls, and having to move on so quickly to avoid anyone questioning why he wasn’t in school had definitely taken its toll. That was why he had decided to enrol himself at the local high school when he’d first moved to town and the friends he’d made had helped him catch up on everything that he’d missed. He would be the first to admit that he wasn’t the best student in the world but he was trying and he couldn’t deny that it was worth it to have some semblance of normality in his life. He still hunted but he liked to think that he had a pretty good balance of hunting and being a teenager in his life and he knew that he wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible. That day Ben had been busy trying to juggle his homework with the case that he was researching and his frustration at not being able to figure out either ended up getting the better of him. Before he knew it one of the books he had been reading went flying across the room and hit the wall before falling to the floor and all Ben could do was look at it in astonishment. He hadn’t thrown it, somehow the book had moved on its own and that was something that didn’t make any sense to the teenager since nothing like it had ever happened around him before. For a moment he wondered if there was something in the room messing with him but before he could try and put the pieces together he heard a knock on the door and he quickly got to his feet, grabbing the book and tossing it on the bed with the rest of the others before making his way over to the door and opening it. “Hey Sam, what’s wrong?” he asked, knowing that there had to be something going on to cause his uncle to show up at his door out of the blue. Sam had been keeping his distance lately and even though Ben didn’t know what was going on with him he got the feeling that it wasn’t anything good so chances were this surprise visit wasn’t going to be either. Sam Winchester:
Sam hated the idea that Ben instantly thought that there was something wrong. There was more than one thing wrong but that didn't matter. It showed that Ben was still always on edge and what hunter wouldn't be?Sam had never meant for it to turn out like this. He never wanted to go down the path he had before but it had happened again. He had thought that after everything that the brothers had done they had deserved a break or for the apocalypse to be over. Chuck's book was rewritten, history had changed but apparently not enough. Somehow the world had found its way down that path again. Maybe it was just meant to end. Maybe the angels and demons were right, the world's time had come.Sam tried to smile to reassure his nephew that nothing was severely wrong but he couldn't muster it. His smile faded quicker than it appeared. "Can I come in? We need to talk." He took a deep breath. How could he tell Ben what had happened between him and Dean? The older Winchester looked around to check he hadn't been followed. "It isn't safe this open." Sam had no idea who or what was watching out for him or over him any more."I can explain everything. If you're busy I can come back later" He could see the pile of books on the bed and didn't want to take his time if he was busy or was that an excuse. He knew it wouldn't be easy for either of them but he had to make Ben aware of what Sam thought would happen. Sam considered telling Ben his plan to stop Lucifer in hopes that Ben would tell Dean. At least that way Dean would know what happened to him, that he hadn't just disappeared or gone off the deep end. That he had good intentions for his family in the long run. One thing Ben had learned since finding his dad was that there was always something going on and when it came to his dad and uncle that was rarely a good thing. He hunted too and he knew quite a few other hunters but the two of them seemed to have a habit of attracting danger. Deep down he knew that he had probably inherited that trait from his dad, after all he had ended up getting trapped in a mine when the roof collapsed while he was backing Brooke up on a hunt and it had ended up costing Ben his life. It was only because his dad had called in a favour with Crowley that he had been brought back to life and that was something that Ben was all too aware of. He was being more careful now than he had been previously but it still hadn’t been enough to make him want to turn away from hunting. He had taken a step back for a while as he had needed to take some time to get his head around what had happened but now he was throwing himself right back into the thick of it once more. He had no idea what had caused the book he had been reading to go flying across the room but he knew that he was going to have to find out. For now, though, Sam was his main priority. Ben knew that he wouldn’t have shown up sounding so urgent if something wasn’t going on and the smile he gave wasn’t exactly reassuring so Ben nodded as Sam asked if he could come in before going on to sound a little paranoid which was enough to worry Ben. “Of course,” he said, stepping aside so that Sam would enter the room before closing the door behind him once he was inside. As Sam said that he could come back later if he was busy, Ben found himself studying his uncle carefully for a moment. “Now is fine. What’s going on?”SAM WINCHESTER

Sam Winchester:
Sam didn't know how to tell Ben of his fears. The last thing he wanted to do was terrify his nephew but in all honesty being a Winchester meant you had to expect the worst for the nicest of situations. Sam was ashamed of the last time he had been on demon blood. He was ashamed of how he was so easily fooled by Hell from even before he was born. He knew he was made for a purpose and he'd be damned if he was going to do as God said, did that make him more like Lucifer than he hoped. Sam tried to hide his fears but he knew it was almost impossible to hide his fear of Lucifer after all that was all that drived him at the moment. Sam stepped inside once Ben opened the door. Sam wouldn't just walk in and barge in uninvited. This was going to be hard enough without adding more to the difficulty of getting Ben to listen and see sense. "well," He paused how could he tell Ben that he was possibly a vessel for Lucifer? How could he tell the boy that he was cursed from birth for being in the Winchester bloodline? Sam had a plan to stop it all or so he thought but first he would have to warn his nephew in case it didn't work. Sam knew that none of this was going to be easy so he needed a back up plan and a back up back up plan this was hell they were dealing with after all. " Ben, I don't know how to say this but..." He gulped and took a deep breath. "Me and your father have had a fight. It's a long story. Don't worry we are both fine but we met some enemies of the past who we thought were long dead. I don't know if De- If you dad told you about Azazel and Lilith? We disagreed on something and well it didn't end well."
It was still weird to him calling Dean a father or even accepting that Ben was in fact a Winchester. He knew it was true but part of him wished that Ben was not part of their blood line but the other part wished he was so Dean would have family for when he was gone for when his planned either worked or didn't work.

Some might not have seen him running away after his mom died as the smart decision but Ben had known that it was much better than the alternative. He’d heard the horror stories from friends who had been brought up in care and even though the social worker had assured him that it wouldn’t be like that for him, deep down he had known better. He was already a teenager when his mom died and a lot of his friends who had grown up in the system had never been adopted so he had known that he was just going to become another name in a faceless system. He had known that just about anything would be better than that and he hadn’t been able to talk to anyone he had grown up with about what had really happened to his mom so he knew that he really hadn’t had any other choice in the matter. The life he had now might not exactly be the one that he had imagined that he would have when he was younger but now he had his dad, his uncle and plenty of people that he cared about in his life o things had worked out so much better than he had thought that they would. Of course it hadn’t all been plain sailing and there had naturally been ups and downs, his death being one of the low points without a doubt, but lately things had been going well for the family and Ben honestly wanted it to stay that way. There were always going to be challenges for them all to face but one thing that Ben knew for sure was that no matter what happened they would face it together. He would be lying if he said that he wasn’t a little jealous of the bond that his dad and uncle had, they always seemed to have each other’s backs through everything and it was clear that they would do just about anything for each other and that kind of relationship was something that he had always wanted. He couldn’t deny that Sam’s sudden appearance was enough to worry him, though, he knew that there had to be something going on but what that could be he wasn’t sure. There always seemed to be a lot going on in Mystic Falls but he worked different cases to the ones that Sam and Dean worked so he knew that it could be something to do with that. As Sam finally spoke, however, Ben studied him carefully for a moment before shaking his head. “No, he hasn’t. Why don’t you start at the beginning and tell me exactly what happened?” he suggested. Sam Winchester:
Sam was a little jealous of Ben as not only did he know his mother but he was out of the life for most of his life so far. Ben had a chance of a normal life or as normal a life as a hunter could get. If Sam's suspicions were true, like they normally were, then Ben had a slim chance but a chance none the less. Maybe just maybe, Ben could make the correct choices, the ones he did wrong. Even if it killed him or turned him into a monster beyond recognition he would make sure Ben didn't make the same mistakes he made. The hunter hoped that even if he couldn't be saved then maybe Ben could be. Sam couldn't help but laugh. It seemed that Ben was being the sensible adult one of the two, able to see and make sense. Honestly, after the 'reunion' at the Grill had really shook Sam to the core. Now he was on a path of self destruction in hopes it would save his family, the Winchester way. "Okay, I'll try. You're smart you should be able to make sense of all of this quickly." He took a deep breath. "Mind if I sit?" He gestured to the bed where most of the books were. Sam noticed the book that was isolated and dented from where it flew across the room, especially as the rest were all in mint condition. "Ben, I see ways in which we are similar but I think it comes down to more than just genes, I believe it's more like a bloodline." The Winchester hoped beyond hope that he was wrong. Hell he was even praying that for once he was completely wrong about this but he knew somehow he wasn't. "As you are aware your grandparents are both dead." He paused. "They both died at the hands of Azazel, a yellow eyed demon who is currently the king of Hell. Your dad doesn't like talking about them as he would rather keep it under wraps where he doesn't have to think or remember it." He cleared his throat before he continued. He wasn't sure how much Ben knew about their family and bloodline to both Cain and Able as well as the Men of Letters. "Stop me if you've heard any of this before." How on Earth was he going to break this to his nephew. If Ben knew everything then the chance of a normal life would be whipped from underneath him, but if Sam didn't tell it all then there was a possibility that it would be either way. He would have to just bite the bullet as to speak and get on with it. "Mary, mine and your dad's mom, made a deal with Azazel to bring your grandfather back to life. Azazel knew how much he meant to her and nobody knew it back then but it just seems to be the Winchester way." He laughed dryly as he tried to make light of the situation a little, after all he was Dean's son. "She didn't sell her soul, she's at peace in Heaven." Or so he thought anyway. "She gave the demon access to the house ten years later." He closed his eyes and tilted his head to the side as he hated where this was going. He had traveled in time to stop this from happening but it was always bound to happen, one way or another. "He wanted access to my nursery on the night of November 2, 1983." He opened his eyes again. "I don't condone under age drinking but, you are a Winchester, you don't happen to have any drinks in do you? Don't worry I wont be all holier than thou on you." This was going to probably take all night and a school night of all nights? "Really, Sam? You should know better, tut." There it was the taunts of Lucifer back again. "He stood over my crib and..." He took a deep breath as he coughed to hide the tears. If this night never come to pass then they may have been able to live normally like he always wanted. However, he wouldn't be here with a nephew. "And... bled into my mouth. Mary walked in on him and she recognized him, so he burnt her alive, to get the family into hunting as she gave it up." He swallowed hard to clear a lump that had formed suddenly in his throat. Sam paused for a moment to see if Ben had any questions. That may have been the start of it and hardly scratched the surface but it was a lot of information to process. "So, your father carried me from the fire and we started living on the road and in motels. Dean and John knew what it was like to miss your grandmother but I didn't and it was hard on them. Over the years I made some very bad decisions that lead me to where I am now. I wanted a normal life and didn't know what it was like to live like everyone else so I kept trying and trying." As he looked back he could see all the times he had been as Lucifer had put it 'running to him'. "I went to college and met a girl, you know the usual, then Azazel sent the order to have her killed as I was getting to flabby and had left the life. They set me up with her just to take her away from me too on the same night just for irony."With the new ingestion of demon blood his emotions weren't exactly stable. He went from sadness to livid in a split second as he thought about his connections to Brady, Azazel and Jessica. To this day he still kept the engagement ring he was going to propose with in his duffel bag to remind him why he was still in the life. The bedside lamp started to flicker slightly as he remembered how when he got his full ride he was going to take her to celebrate and ask her to marry him then so the lime light would both be theirs. But, it never got that far. She was taken from him the night before his interview. He growled slightly before clearing his throat. "Sorry, I... Yeah." He shook his head as he looked to the light. "They kept manipulating me for their own game and Heaven let them. One step at a time I was going exactly where they wanted me to like a lamb to the slaughter." Sam hated baring his soul for all to see. It wasn't exactly a thing taught in his household growing up you just hunted through it or drank your way through it. "And what was it all for? Well for me to be Lucifer's meat suit and to start the apocalypse." No matter how much he tried to bury that fact it would never just die. "They put Ruby in my tracks this time. She was a demon who coaxed me and my powers along until I was strong enough to kill Lilith. After your dad sold his soul for me and went to Hell she was there when I was... well, a mess. She helped straighten me out or what I thought she was anyway. Turned out she was just grooming me to break the last seal and let Lucifer free. Our bloodline goes back to the first murder; Cain. It has to be a Winchester to be able to hold either Micheal or Lucifer." He paused as this was where Dean had accused him of unimaginable things. "Hear me out, please." He held his hand up in hopes to be heard and not stopped or told to leave. "I ended up hosting Lucifer and your uncle Adam hosted Micheal. Both your father and Adam were able to host Micheal because they do not have demon blood in them and they were both brought up with their father loving them and them loving their father like Micheal and God. Your dad refused to as he put it 'become an angel condom'. The angels brought Adam back from the dead rather than finding you. They needed someone as Lucifer had his true vessel. That is one of the things that has lead me to believe that you are a host for Lucifer, like I am. Have you been experiencing headaches or anything extraordinary lately?" Sam understood that the boys head would be exploding with questions and ideas and uncertainties. Instead of continuing he paused and looked at Ben properly for the first time since he entered the room. Maybe he should have started with that question rather than telling him he may have demon blood in him and may be a vessel for the devil. He had seen how Dean had reacted to this news and if it were true then Ben would have similar powers to him and may explode or loose control. The older Winchester just hoped he was wrong and that he had jumped to conclusion about all of this and it was just one BIG misunderstanding. For years Ben had lived his life completely oblivious to the supernatural world and there were times when he wished that he could go back to that simple life but he also knew that he wouldn’t be the person that he was now if he hadn’t had to go through everything that life had thrown at him. He had found out about demons when Dean had been living with him but those memories had been wiped after his mom nearly died. He hadn’t wanted to know Dean after that but he knew now just how wrong he had been. He had lashed out and he’d wanted someone to blame after coming so close to losing the only parent he’d had up until that point and it had been wrong of him. Now he knew that he had inherited his dad’s hot-headed tendencies though and he had learned from that mistake. He liked to think that he was not just older now but much wiser as well and even though it still annoyed him sometimes when his dad and uncle tended to keep things from him he tried not to let it bother him so much because at the end of the day he knew that he was lucky to have them in his life at all. Ben knew that he wasn’t perfect either, there were certain things that he kept from the two of them as well so he knew that he couldn’t really blame them for keeping some things to themselves if they thought that by doing so they would be protecting him when he was sometimes guilty of doing exactly the same thing. Even the fact that Claire was sharing the motel room with him was something that he had kept to himself but that was so that they wouldn’t get the wrong end of the stick. It wasn’t very often than his dad or Sam sought him out so that they could actually fill him in on some of what was going on and he nodded as Sam asked if he could sit. “Sure,” he said without even giving it a second thought. He wasn’t sure what it was that Sam wanted to talk to him about but he hoped that he just might finally get some answers. As Sam said that he thought that the similarities between them were more down to a bloodline, Ben’s expression turned to one of confusion. “What do you mean?” he asked, not too sure where this was going. Of course they shared a bloodline, Sam was his uncle after all, but he got the feeling that he meant something completely different to that and Ben couldn’t deny that he was intrigued and a little apprehensive as to what that was at the same time. As Sam told him to stop him if he’d heard any of this before, Ben shook his head. “I haven’t,” he admitted. He had known that his grandparents were killed by a demon but he had never been told the specifics and now his interest was piqued. He couldn’t deny that he was surprised when Sam said that his grandma had made a deal with Azazel to bring his grandpa back to life but when he said that it was the Winchester way, a small chuckle escaped the teenager. “You got that right,” he nodded, knowing that his dad had made a similar deal to bring him back after he’d died saving Brooke when the mine exploded. That wasn’t the first deal that his dad had made either, he and Sam seemed to have a habit of making deals to save each other so it didn’t surprise him at all to learn that it hadn’t started with them and that his grandparents had been exactly the same way. Ben was about to ask why Azazel had wanted access to the nursery when Sam asked if he had anything to drink and an amused smile worked its way across Ben’s face as he got to his feet. “What do you think?” he asked before crossing the room and opening the fridge before pulling out two beers and holding one out to Sam. Taking the top off his beer, Ben took a swig before hesitating as Sam continued. It was clear that what he was saying was really affecting him and it made Ben appreciate the fact that he was taking the time to talk to him all that much more. “He bled into your mouth? Why on earth would be do that?” Ben asked, unable to deny that he was confused once more. The whole story sounded crazy and had it not been for the fact that not only did he trust Sam but that it was affecting him so much to talk about it then Ben might have thought that he was making it up but he knew better than that. “You’re talking about Jessica, right?” he asked as he looked over at his uncle. “I’m so sorry, I had no idea.” He had been told that she’d died but again he hadn’t been given any details. He knew that that had to be who his uncle was talking about though and he couldn’t help but feel bad for him. Ben knew what it was like to have a normal life completely turned upside down and he couldn’t help but wonder if he would have eventually been drawn back into the hunting life if he had tried to walk away from it after he’d died and been brought back the same way that Sam had. Looking over at the lamp as it began to flicker, Ben got the feeling that there was more to it than dodgy electrics but he shook his head as Sam apologised. “You have nothing to apologise for,” he assured him before taking another swig of his drink as Sam continued. Sam’s next words seemed to all come tumbling out and all Ben could do was listen and he simply nodded as Sam asked to be heard out. It all sounded incredible and he knew that it was probably going to take a little time to get his head around all of it but he knew that he had to try. “Adam is your half-brother, right?” he asked, pretty sure that he had heard that name briefly in passing. Even as Sam continued a few things seemed to fall into place and Ben’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “All of this happened just before dad came to live with us, didn’t it?” he asked, knowing that it was the only thing that made sense. “He said he’d lost you but he refused to talk about what happened.” That was his dad’s way and probably always had been. He was about to ask why Sam thought that he was a vessel for Lucifer as well when he suddenly asked if he’d had any headaches or if anything extraordinary had happened lately. “I have been having a few headaches lately and a couple of times at school people near me seem to have been shocked by something but I never took much notice of it,” he admitted after thinking back to the odd things that had been happening lately. “Right before you got here I got frustrated while I was doing my homework and some research and a book went flying across the room,” he added. “Azazel got to me too, didn’t he?” he asked, unable to ignore the concern that was starting to build within him. He knew that he had to stay strong but he didn’t know what was happening to him and that scared him. SAM WINCHESTER

Sam Winchester:
Sam sat down moving the books over without a second thought. It felt odd coming clean to Ben about his past without Dean being there but maybe he could be more truthful without his brother by his side, after all he saw how Dean looked at him when it involved anything demonic. "It's not exactly easy for me to explain this, Ben. Your father hates this side of me and deep down I think he blames me for Mary's death." Dean had never said it but deep down ever since Sam found out he suspected it how could he not? If it wasn't for Mary entering the nursery that night none of them would have been any the wiser for twenty-two years. The older Winchester knew that if she didn't then there would have been something else that would have forced him into the life he never wanted. It had always been Azazel's plan to get the Cambells/Winchesters on the board game no matter the cost. It didn't surprise him that Ben didn't know about any of this. It wasn't exactly a fun bed time story and it had always been drilled into both him and Dean not to tell anyone about their true lives. Sam had never told Jessica and look what happened there? "well it was also how your Grandfather ended up in Hell as well as how both your Dad and I ended up in the pit too. Saving the family despite the damage to yourself. Please tell me you've learnt the lesson from us not to do that?" Sam knew that Ben was a true Winchester which meant that he may think he had learnt the lesson but would go against it for family anyway. Wasn't that what Samuel was doing now? Sacrificing himself for his family and also the world? Would any of them ever learn? Sam was too relieved that Ben had beer in to even think about the whole uncle role right now, it wasn't as if the family was exactly traditional anyway. "Maybe he did it because he is a yellow-eyed-freak who gets his kicks from turning people into a shell for his father." Sam had always been the black sheep but until John had died nobody could really put their finger on it. Sam took a deep breath and looked down. "You've heard of Jess?" That did surprise him. It all happened so long ago that he assumed Dean would think it irrelevant now. He shook his head and looked back up to Ben. "Don't be sorry. How were you meant to know? It's in the past now. I mean yeah sometimes the sight of her that night still wakes me up but I've had time to accept what happened." It wasn't as if he was lying he was just extending the truth a little. Sam knew now that Azazel was alive again Sam could get his revenge for what happened to Jess. He had waited this long why not wait a little longer. After all the hunter had killed Lilith the first demon so he knew he could be strong enough to take the self proclaimed king as well it was just a matter of time. Again the Winchester nodded. "Yeah, Adam is John's third son." It pained him to think that Adam, or what was left of him, was still in the cage. When Sam left the cage there wasn't much of Adam left if anything but it didn't mean Lucifer wouldn't still have his fun with what was left as his first choice of play thing had been removed. "I said you were cleaver. Yeah, my dying wish was that your dad take his shot at a normal life with you and your mum. Dean promised me he would give up hunting when I jumped in the pit and dragged Adam and Micheal in with me. Micheal didn't want me to go in. He wanted to roast the planet and kill Lucifer." Of course Dean wouldn't mention what happened. It wasn't as if Ben and Lisa would have believed him back then anyway. Plus, there was no easy way to say ' So, Sammy jumped into the cage in the deepest part of Hell to contain Lucifer for all eternity, along with Micheal, yeah the archangel, and our half brother Adam. Can I come in?'. "If he had told you back then would you have believed him or thrown him in a loony bin?" If he had been told a few years prior to it happening he would have thought it crazy too. There it was. Sam's worst nightmare was coming true. Instead of panicking and worrying he did what he always did and went into problem solving mode. "When did the headaches start?" It was like a switch he would treat it as if it was any other job and get to the bottom of it before he let his emotions process it all. "Okay, so, you are having the symptoms I started with. You are a little younger than I was when I started to get my powers. Do you get nightmares, visions, vibes that something is wrong but you cannot put your finger on it?" Sam knew that every special child's powers were different but it almost always started with headaches until they accepted it. Sam used to even black out when a vision came until he accepted it was part of him. It had happened again recently that until he accepted it it hurt. It was as if the powers would not be ignored and would keep pushing until you used them. Sam had used it to save Dean a couple of times and it all started by him thinking he could use the powers for good but it took a dark path. Sam was adamant he would keep Ben from going dark. "I think so. Don't worry Ben, I'll help you through this. I've been through it and I won't let you make the mistakes I did." He paused for a second as he couldn't help but think of Dean. "You do realise if this is true you will have to tell your dad about this and he may not like it."

Sam’s visit was definitely an unexpected one and Ben had known straight away that there had to be a reason for him wanting to catch up. Sam was his uncle but this went beyond uncle-nephew bonding and for once a part of Ben hoped that he might gain a little more insight into his family but he wasn’t sure. He knew that a lot had happened in his family before he was born and he knew that his grandma’s death was what had triggered his grandpa to become a hunter in the first place and that in turn had resulted in his dad and uncle getting involved in the life but he didn’t know what had caused it or even really what had happened since aside from the snippets of information that he had been able to gather from the two of them during various different conversations. There were times when he still felt a little like an outsider among his own family but he was trying to keep in mind that if they weren’t telling him certain things then it was probably for a good reason. He knew firsthand that sometimes they kept things from him because they thought that they were protecting him but he was old enough to look out for himself so he wanted them to start trusting him with things more. “Why would he blame you?” Ben asked, unaware of what had really happened during the time that his grandma had died. That was something that he had tried to get an answer to in the past but he had always failed miserably. For the first time Ben felt a little hope start to build within him that he might finally learn the truth even if something told him that it wasn’t going to be easy to hear. As time went on Sam was starting to fill him in on what had happened and as he spoke again, Ben nodded slowly. “I think so. I asked dad not to make a deal to bring me back when I died but he went and did it anyway. Thankfully there weren’t any consequences that time but there could have been. I can’t say I wouldn’t make a deal to save one of you in the heat of the moment but I know that every deal comes with a price,” he explained. He would have done anything to bring his mom back after she died but he knew that she would have found peace in Heaven and it wasn’t his place to drag her away from that. Instead he was left to go on without her and he knew that he needed to do his best to keep the family that he actually had left together. “It still couldn’t have been easy,” he offered as Sam said that he’d had time to accept what had happened to Jess. Ben had been through a breakup before when Hayden left but at least then he had known that she was still out there somewhere. He had lost his mom as well but he knew that it had to have been a million times worse for Sam to lose the woman he loved. He didn’t know much about what had happened but he had heard the name and he knew that she had died so he had been able to put two and two together from there. “I would have thought he was crazy,” Ben admitted, taking a moment to get his head around everything that Sam had just told him. “It sounds like you did what you thought was right at the time and dad did hold up his end of the bargain. He never talked about what had happened to you but I knew it wasn’t good and I tried to distract him as much as I could,” he explained. Even before he had known that Dean was actually his dad the guy had still been the closest thing that he’d ever had to one so it had seemed like the right thing to do. “It sounds like Michael needed to be stopped and so did Lucifer so you did the right thing locking them away but somehow you came back. How did that happen?” he asked, knowing that someone had to have pulled Sam from the cage. “Is Adam free now too?” he added, not sure what had happened to his other uncle. As Sam asked when the headaches started, Ben’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “A while ago. I’ve been feeling like something is different ever since dad had Henrik bring me back but I couldn’t figure out what,” he explained. He had tried asking Henrik for help but it wasn’t anything that his friend had seen before either so Ben had been doing his best to ignore it and get on with his life. “That’s the first time I’ve ever been able to move something with my mind but last week I did tackle a guy while we were playing football at school and he said he felt like he had been electrocuted. Do you think that could be something to do with it too?” he asked. He hadn’t wanted to believe it at the time and he had done his best to put it to the back of his mind but now after everything that Sam had told him he couldn’t help but think about it again. As Sam said that he was going to help him before saying that if it was true then he was going to have to tell his dad the colour drained from Ben’s face. “I’m going to lose him, aren’t I?” He had already put his dad through so much when he died and Dean had made a deal to bring him back but now Ben couldn’t help but worry that his dad was going to end up regretting it when he found out about this latest development. Sam Winchester:
Was Dean keeping this from Ben? Sam had never really confronted Dean about this, was saying it to his son the right thing to do? "If my mum hadn't made a deal with Azazel to get into my nursery she wouldn't have tried to stop him and wouldn't have ended up dying." He may have only been four months old but he always felt that if John had known the truth back then he would have blamed him as well. Sam was surprised that Ben admitted that in the heat of the moment he may make a deal even Sam and Dean wouldn't admit that. Truth was no demon would touch them for a deal unless it was really necessary. Sam nodded. "See if we told you even half of it back then you would have thought we had lost it. Even now you wouldn't believe half of what has happened to our family." Sam knew Dean had kept his dying wish as he had been there watching over his brother for the year he was with Ben. He still had the memories of having no soul as well as the memories his soul had from the pit. Even with no soul Sam could tell that Dean was happy with Ben and Lisa. He only wished that it had managed to carry on like that. "I know you did Ben. You did well even if it didn't always feel like it, he was happy with you and your mum." And there it was. The conversation came onto how he had managed to escape Hell. "I didn't do it on my own. I never even expected to be freed. You've met Castiel? Well he marched into Hell with the help of Crowley and pulled most of me from the pit." Sam looked down at the mention of Adam. "Castiel didn't manage to pull me out completely he left my soul behind. Crowley and Cas used me for their own gains and kept my soul as leverage." He shook his head and looked back up to his nephew. "Cas struggled to get any of me out of the cage, Death had to get the rest. It wasn't for free. Your dad had to pick between my soul and Adam." He took a deep breath. "It's obvious what he choose." Now Sam wished Dean had picked Adam, it would be so much easier without a soul and without people to worry about but Dean had chosen him over Adam and now he was stuck in the pit. He couldn't bring himself to say that their brother was still in Lucifer's dog bowl. The elder Winchester tired to stay focused on the case and not let his emotions get in the way. The fact was when he had died for the first time Sam had come back different. He had assumed it was sue to the demon blood not the fact he had been forced back to life by a deal. All of the Special Children had powers that started the same so he brushed it of as just over thinking it. Sam shrugged his shoulders "It could be. In the group of children he made including me there was a great variety of powers. They ranged from telekinesis, pyrotechnics, visions of the future amongst others. Over time the more you use the powers and accept them the more you can do. Many can even control demons if they try."Sam shook his head as soon as Ben suggested that Dean would abandon him "Of course you wont." There's a possibility you might lose me to stop this but no not your dad. "He loves you and he wont let anything happen to you. Your dad will be terrified of loosing you like he lost me but we know more this time around. You will not make the same mistakes as me." Sam wouldn't let him drink demon blood or go down that path. Ben was the lucky one. He didn't have Ruby pushing him down the path.

Ben knew that there were probably lots of things that had happened in the past that his dad and uncle hadn’t filled him in on and he didn’t expect to be told every little thing but something like this seemed important so he didn’t like the fact that he had been kept in the dark about it. He knew that his dad and uncle had had their differences over the years but they always seemed to sort things out in the end and he knew that he just had to believe that this time wouldn’t be any different. If he was honest it was a relief to know that there was someone else out there who knew what was going on. He could still remember the anger he’d felt when his mom had ended up in the hospital after the demon attacked them, he had told Dean that they would be better off without him and at the time he had honestly believed it but he knew now just how wrong he had been. He had come so close to losing his mom to a world that he hadn’t even known had existed, a world that Dean had been a part of, but as it turned out there was a chance that it was a part of it whether he liked it or not too. Ben’s first instinct had been to keep his mouth shut when Sam had showed up but he had quickly come to realise that that wouldn’t do any good. Sam was the one person who would be able to understand so in a way it was a relief being able to find out exactly what was going on and what had happened in the past so that he could try and make sure that history didn’t end up repeating itself. “She couldn’t have known what was going to happen. It wasn’t her fault and it wasn’t yours either. You were just a baby,” Ben said gently. The fact that Sam blamed himself for something that had happened while he was too young to do anything about it was incredible to Ben but he knew that both his dad and uncle had a nasty habit of carrying a lot of blame around with them for things that they shouldn’t so deep down he knew that he shouldn’t be surprised. As Sam spoke again, Ben found himself studying his uncle carefully for a moment. “I think you’d be surprised, I can be pretty open minded sometimes,” he shrugged. He knew that that was probably unusual for someone from his family but it was a trait that he had inherited from his mother. He knew that things weren’t always black and white like they seemed and he knew that not all supernaturals were bad and that there were those out there who deserved to be protected just as much as humans did. There was a lot that Ben had learned over the years since he had become a hunter and trusting his family was definitely one of those things. “We were happy having him there too, it felt like he belonged with us and now I know why,” Ben admitted. He had asked his mom so many times if Dean was his dad and each time she had said no and she had said it so many times that Ben had eventually believed her. After she died, however, he and Sam had become the only family that Ben had had left and he would be lying if he said that there were times when he didn’t always feel like he fit in he was doing his best to make them proud and still stay true to who he really was at the same time. “You were his whole world for a long time, I’m not surprised he chose you,” Ben admitted. Even though the two of them butted heads sometimes it was clear how close his dad and Sam were and if Ben had had a brother that he was close to like that then he would choose him in a heartbeat over a brother he hardly knew as well. Now with all of this going on Ben would be lying if he said that he wasn’t worried that he might just end up losing the only family that he had left as well but he knew that they would figure it out somehow, they had to. “I don’t want to use these powers, I don’t want anything to do with them,” he admitted even though something told him that he wasn’t going to have much of a choice about it in the end. “He made a deal to bring me back before any of this started happening, what if he regrets it when he finds out about all of this? He didn’t ask to be a dad,” Ben said, finally voicing the concerns he’d carried with him for a while. Dean had never asked to have a son and even though he had made it clear the day Ben had died that he didn’t regret finding out that they were father and son Ben had always worried that something might happen to change his mind and he knew that this could so easily be it. Sam Winchester:
Looking at Ben now, the elder Winchester could see the resemblance to Dean. Sam wished more than anything that he could make up with Dean and screw destiny in the face but he knew he had to push Dean away. It was the only way he could go through with his plan. He couldn't be all pally with his brother and sacrifice himself. Sam didn't want to give up his family now that it was growing but he had to accept the fact that he wouldn't have a family if Lucifer rose. Sam knew that if Lucifer rose then the Winchesters would be one of the first humans wiped. He knew this because it would be what he would do, wipe out the enemies resources, friends, family to make them suffer. Death would be too easy, leaving them alone to watch you succeed would hurt more than death. That was how the hunter knew that it was either him or them. He had to keep going down the wrong path to save them.Sam shook his head. "No, but she was a hunter, she knew what a deal with a demon would lead to. Deals always have strings. She may not have been given ten years but an invitation into her house was not a good deal either, even if it was to bring back her boyfriend." Just look at what it led to. Sammy knew he would have made the same deal at the time for Jess but now he knew where it went he would never do that to anyone else. He couldn't blame his mom, same situation, same choice, same information, he would have done the same thing. The hunter also knew that it wasn't logically his fault but he still believed that it was. If Mary hadn't walked into the nursery while Azazel was in there then she wouldn't have died. Sam could not have changed it in anyway but Mary had tried to stop it and that was something, even if it was happening because of her. "I'm not saying that you wouldn't believe it now but, back then you'd have checked him into a mental institute. Then they would look at his wrap sheet and he would end up there for life." Sam knew that half of what he was saying now was impossible to believed. If he hadn't lived it he would not believe it either, hell, even angels couldn't believe half of it. Sam nodded. Like everything else in the Winchester's lives they new when something was right even if they didn't know why, maybe it was destiny, maybe they were just attuned to when things weren't right. Then there was the complete opposite, maybe it was just a fluke? It seemed that Ben was more of an adult than Sam gave him credit for. It was true hunters grew up too quickly but Ben was something else. "I know but I was more free without a soul." He took a deep breath and a long sip of his beer. "I'll be honest. I was a better hunter without it and I may not have been me but when my soul came back I wasn't the same either." He looked way from his nephew. "I wish I never remembered Hell. If my soul was there I would have another brother and no memories from the pit. You don't get it." He shook his head. "I wish he hadn't choose me. My soul was in Hell for a century. I was the Devil's play thing for most of that. I couldn't sleep, there was never a let up and no break. Then when I was the most liberated I had ever been, Dean choose me over Adam. My brother choose to put me through Hell again, literally and left a human soul in there. Adam didn't ask to be in there. It was Dean's fault Adam was possessed in the first place! It was my fault he got dragged in. I should still be in there, not him." Sam had never wished his fate on anybody and yet it was his family to follow in his steps. He remembered how he felt when he was in Ben's position. "I didn't want to use them. Every time I do I feel power, real power and that's the kicker. It makes you feel you need it and it drags you down hard." He slowly looked up to Ben. He didn't want to tell Ben the scariest part of him but he had to. He had to to ensure he didn't look up to him or follow him at all down this path. "You first, end up using them thinking you are doing good or exorcising demons, doing our job and you are but in truth you are just feeding it." He shook his head as he admitted it. "You use it even a little to solve a hunt and it gets stronger and harder to ignore. You tell yourself a little wont help and before you know it you'll be knee deep in demon blood and killing innocents to get more power..." He closed the end of the sentence by cutting himself off. And there it was. The possible truth. He could never tell if Dean would regret it eventually but Sam wouldn't let it happen. "He brought me back too. He may have regretted it when I let Lucifer out but you will not do anything that bad to make him." He shook his head. "He didn't ask to be a dad but take it from me, he had never been happier. He may not show it but believe me. I have always looked up to him and trust me he loves every second of it." He smiled genuinely. "We never ask for family and it is not always flowers and rainbows, he knows this. He will stand with you. You've seen how he is with me. I've done more than you ever will to make him hate me. I have tried pushing him away time and time again and he still pushes through." He sighed. "Even if you forcibly push him away he will be there for you, like it or not."

Ben knew what a deal with a demon could do, he had seen it time and time again during his travels before he got to Mystic Falls. He would be lying if he said that he hadn’t thought about making a deal to bring his mom back but he knew that that wasn’t what she would have wanted. He hadn’t wanted his dad to make a deal to bring him back when he died after the mine exploded either but Dean had gone and done it anyway. Ben still wasn’t sure exactly what his dad had agreed to in order to bring him back but thankfully no one had come to collect that he knew of yet so he was trying not to worry about it too much. Ben knew all too well just how much family meant to his dad and uncle and he knew that they would do anything for each other, just like they would do anything for him and he would do anything for them. He had lived for years believing that the only family he had was gone but then he found his dad and uncle and things had been so much better ever since. Ben had known that there was something going on for a while now but he hadn’t known just what that was and now he was glad that he was finally getting to the bottom of it no matter how difficult it was. “I get why you would feel that way but my mom must have made a deal with Azazel too and I know she wouldn’t have done that if there was any other choice just like your mom wouldn’t have, If she hadn’t made that deal then you and Dean wouldn’t be here and neither would I,” Ben said, able to see the other side of it even if Sam couldn’t. Ben was still trying to get his head around the fact that his mom had made a deal with a demon in the first place but he couldn’t deny that strange things had been happening lately and the only thing that made sense was that he had been fed demon blood when he was a baby just like his uncle. He knew that Sam was right, he needed to tell Dean but that was going to be much easier said than done. Ben wished that he could ask his mom why she had made the deal but he couldn’t, all he could do was believe that she had done it for a good reason. “You’re right, neither of us would have believed him then but I would now and whatever has happened I’m ready to hear it. I can take it,” Ben assured him. He was a different person now to the one that he used to be, he was a lot stronger and he had seen more than most people his age could even imagine so whatever it was he knew that he could handle it. As Sam said that he should still be in the cage rather than Adam, Ben shook his head. “I’m sorry but we’re going to have to agree to disagree on that. You sacrificed yourself to make sure that Lucifer couldn’t hurt anyone else but you didn’t deserve to be trapped in that cage any more than Adam did. You’ve done so much good with your life so don’t let guilt over what happened with Adam erase all of that. You’re both doing the best you can, you did that then and you’re doing that now even if you and dad aren’t seeing eye to eye,” he offered, hoping that his uncle would listen to his words. Sam was trying to save him now and that was something that Ben appreciated but he didn’t want Sam to give up on Dean just because he couldn’t see that just yet, “That’s what I’m scared of. I’ve never intentionally used my powers but I can feel the pull to use them already,” he admitted. It was like an addiction and it was one that Ben knew that he definitely didn’t want. What Sam was describing was exactly what Ben didn’t want and he knew that he would do his best not to end up in that same position. “I hope you’re right,” Ben muttered as Sam said that his dad would always be there for him no matter what. “For the record I don’t think he regrets bringing you back either, you’re his brother and I can see how much he loves you. I saw how lost he was without you while you were in the cage, he might make mistakes and it might take him time to come to terms with certain things but he will never give up on you.”SAM WINCHESTER
