Henrik had never been as happy to get back to the apartment that he and Elijah shared than he was that day. He had felt a little conflicted about leaving Cas while he was recovering but he knew that the angel was in safe hands with the Winchesters so Henrik knew that it was fine for him to take his leave. If he was honest, he felt exhausted. He had used magic a lot ever since Crowley brought him back but never as much in one go as he had done that day. A few days ago he had made a trip to the gate to Hell that he had always used and he had spent those days observing what was going on down there. The layout of Hell was something that Henrik knew like the back of his hand anyway having spent the best part of eight years living down there but he had done his best to observe the shift patterns and the movements of the demons in and out so that he could try to avoid as many of them as possible. He had managed to project his spirit into Hell so that he could do all of that but earlier that day he had moved forward in his plan to break Cas out of Hell and needless to say that, the drive back to Mystic Falls and all of the magic that he had used had taken a lot out of Henrik. He had pushed himself to his limits before and it had made him work that much harder to get stronger but now he knew that he just needed to relax for a bit and refuel. Heading back from the motel, Henrik grabbed a pizza on the way before setting the pizza box down on the coffee table and collapsing onto the sofa. He hadn’t told Elijah or Olivia where he was going because he had known that they would only worry about him but he had checked in while he was gone to let them know that he was ok and that he wouldn’t be gone for long. Listening out for any sign of his brother, Henrik soon realised that the apartment was silent so he could only assume that his brother was spending the night at the Boarding House with Tatia. They seemed to share their time between the Boarding House and the apartment and given how late it was he knew that his brother would have been back by now if he was going to be spending the night there so Henrik knew that he had the place to himself. Sending off quick texts to Elijah and Olivia to let them know that he was home safe, Henrik grabbed a slice from the pizza box and took a bite, his eyes drifting shut once he had finished the slice as the events of the day finally caught up with him and he fell asleep. He was a grown man, a warlock, raised by a powerful witch in her own right, trained by the King of Hell after he’d been resurrected, he was fully capable of taking care of himself. Yet, while Henrik had been out of town nerves had eaten at Olivia’s stomach in a way that would’ve had her sure that an ulcer was in her future if her body wasn’t capable of healing damn near any damage thrown at it. Had he taken his mysterious trip before the night they’d finally stopped dancing around one another, she knew she probably wouldn’t have worried half as much, but that night had changed so much between the two of them. Now, despite the messages she’d been getting from Henrik, reassuring her that he was OK, that he’d be back soon, Olivia had found herself picturing him in place of George on that road. She’d woken from a dream of it last night, gasping her way out from under the covers with her heart in her throat. Henrik wasn’t George, this wasn’t their village, lightning wasn’t about to strike twice. She’d repeated those words like a mantra all morning but she still hadn’t been able to focus on the job. Some part of her knew that he hadn’t just gone off on some mini-vacation. This was something more serious, a job from Crowley perhaps, one that perhaps Henrik wouldn’t come back from. In the end Remi had driven her out from behind her own bar. She’d been sent to her office, despite her protestations that she was fine. Her bartender had tried to coax her into taking a nap, but Olivia had known that she wouldn’t be able to sleep. Instead she’d busied herself with her invoices, balancing her books for the month before she arranged for her employees’ wages to be paid out. Seeing Henrik’s name on the screen had her biting anxiously at her lip. Wherever he was, she hoped he was safe right now. She couldn’t go through that sort of loss again.
When her phone buzzed with his message five minutes later she almost took off out of her seat. Her heart in her throat she’d fumbled her way upright, tears burning at her eyes. All that worrying had been for nothing. He was home, he was safe, and she had been a complete idiot. Loving someone didn’t mean you had to constantly fear the loss of them. Some relationships lasted decades without fate taking a single swipe at them. That cynical little voice in her head warned her that some were tossed about like they were caught in a tidal wave by fate’s whims but as she grabbed her car keys off of the desk and headed for the door, Olivia squashed that voice down inside. Henrik was back in town, there was no need to worry for his safety anymore. Halfway out to her car she caught Elijah coming up the path, his own phone in his hand. The good brother that he was, he’d stopped in for a drink, knowing that he could pass the message on to her that his brother was back, just on that faint chance that Henrik hadn’t let her know. Elijah’s knowing smile as he’d said that had made it clear that he knew that the second ‘I’m home’ message would’ve been to her. The keys he’d held up had put that lump back in Olivia’s throat. She’d smacked a kiss on his cheek as she’d taken them and had told him to head inside for that drink anyway. She’d hurried on her way, making it across town in just a few short minutes. Teeth working at her lower lip, she’d opened the apartment door once she’d reached the building, calling out softly as she’d stepped inside. No answer but a glimpse at Henrik asleep on the sofa told her why. Olivia approached, nudging aside the pizza box to sit on the edge of the coffee table. She leaned down, tracing her lips over his cheek as she brushed her fingers through his hair. Not a scratch on him, just those dark lashes fluttering in a way that told her she’d woken him. ”Hey,” she managed softly. ”Welcome home. I didn’t mean to wake you up…” And she shouldn’t have done, not when he’d obviously been tired enough to fall asleep in the first place.

It hadn’t taken Henrik long after arriving in Mystic Falls to learn that his brother was in town, in fact he had bumped into Elijah on his first day in the town and since then he had been working on bringing his family back together. He knew that he still had a long way to go but he was working on it and he hoped that in time he and his siblings would be a proper family again. This time Henrik didn’t just have his siblings to think about though, Cas and Olivia were his family too even though he remembered very little about his time with Cas at the moment and he also had all of the others in Mystic Falls that he had come to care about to think about as well. Henrik knew that all of that meant that he had people to lose but it also meant that he had people to live for and people to fight for. After he was brought back he’d been surrounded by demons but the only person he’d been able to truly count on was Crowley. For the most part it had been a lonely eight years before he had made his way to Mystic Falls and he knew that he didn’t want to go back to the way that things used to be. He didn’t have a lot of contact with Crowley any longer but he had made it clear to the demon that if he ever needed him then he would be there and that was a promise that Henrik intended on sticking to. He wanted to live his life for himself rather than for the King of Hell but he had never been the kind of person to completely turn his back on someone who had become family to him like Crowley had and he knew that he wasn’t about to start now. He was still annoyed that Crowley had kept the fact that his family were alive from him but he had always known deep down that the demon had ulterior motives for everything and Henrik knew better than to let that cloud his judgment. He had grown up a lot over the last few years, he’d had no choice about that, and he knew that he wasn’t going to start moving backwards now. As soon as Crowley had told him that there was someone else being held prisoner in Hell, Henrik had known that he had to help. The demon hadn’t given him any details like who it was or why they were being kept down there but Henrik knew what it was like to live down there and he knew that it wasn’t the kind of place that anyone should be kept against their will. Breaking Cas out of Hell hadn’t been easy and it had taken him a few days to get everything sorted but in the end he had managed to free the angel and now he was safe with the Winchesters where he belonged. It had come as a surprise to Henrik when he had seen a glimpse of himself the way he had been when he died with someone he knew to be Castiel despite the fact that Cas had had a different vessel at the time and he had been unable to shake the feeling that they knew each other from before he was brought back. Those memories still eluded Henrik but he knew that that was a worry for another day anyway. For now he was exhausted after being awake for so long, travelling so far and using so much magic so even though the plan had been to return home and have something to eat to recharge it hadn’t taken long for him to fall asleep, the pizza box that lay open on the coffee table all but forgotten. He’d managed to text Elijah and Olivia and let them know that he was home before falling asleep and he wasn’t sure how long had passed before he felt lips against his cheek and a hand running through his hair and a sleepy smile touched his lips as his eyes slowly opened. “Hey,” he said, his head still resting against the back of the sofa as his eyes met hers. As she said she didn’t mean to wake him up, Henrik shook his head even as he fought a yawn. “It’s fine, it is too early to sleep anyway so you’re doing me a favour,” he admitted as he caught sight of the time. Taking Olivia’s hand in his, Henrik gave it a tug and motioned for her to join him on the sofa. “I’ve missed you.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

She had been moving on. After years of running from the life she’d once had with George in their village, from her childhood and the family she couldn’t see in London, Olivia had started to really make a life for herself in Mystic Falls. It couldn’t be permanent, this wasn’t like the village she’d spent her married life in, not everybody was aware of the supernatural here and questions would start one day. Eventually they would start to question why she wasn’t aging, if she didn’t choose to turn her aging back on again that was, and once that started happening Olivia knew she would have to move again. That was a decade in the future at least though, for now she didn’t have to even consider it. That little voice had started in the back of her mind while Henrik had been gone though. It was filled with fear, as it had been in those weeks after George had been killed. If something had happened could she leave behind the life she had built here and run again? A year ago Olivia wouldn’t have believed she had the strength but the friends she had made her and the admission of her feelings to Henrik had shown her that she had healed more than she’d ever believed she could after what had happened to George. Some part of her would always grieve for him, would always miss him dearly but her happiness couldn’t forever be measured by the people she had loved and lost. Hundreds of years from now she couldn’t still be holding herself back, keeping her heart chained up. Olivia couldn’t allow herself to continue to be terrified … but for those few days some part of her had been. Knowing she wanted to move on and feeling herself be able to do it, to trust that things were going to be OK when the time came, had been two very different things.
Seeing him stretched out on the sofa, whole, safe, perhaps a little pale from tiredness, as she’d let herself into his apartment had been a relief. Creeping across the room, Olivia had settled down beside him, taking a moment to steady herself inside before she’d reached out gentle fingers to touch him. There had been no need to worry, she knew now, him going out of town for a few days wasn’t a sign that the way things had been going here were going to change. It was all completely normal. It was normal to feel the warmth spread like molasses in the pit of her stomach as Henrik’s lips curved in that sleepy smile too. Olivia returned it, her fingers tracing featherlight over his forehead, tracing the line his brow. ”I should’ve let you sleep, you look like you needed it, too early or not.” She glanced at the clock as Henrik did, looking a little rueful. Part of her thought she should’ve waited til closing time, the other part was glad she hadn’t. At the tug of Henrik’s hand, Olivia chuckled softly, getting to her feet. ”I’ve missed you too. Every time the door of the bar opened I was hoping you’d be walking through it.” Planting a knee on the edge of the sofa, Olivia eased her way over him, slipping between Henrik and the back of the couch, stretching out beside him. ”Did it all go OK?” she asked, looking up at him as she rested her head on his shoulder and drew his arm around her. The only thing she’d known was that he was going out of town for a few days, the rest had all been a mystery and Olivia suspected that was what had left her so unsettled, that big question mark leaving something inside of her seeking answers that she wouldn’t get until he returned home at the very least.

It had taken Henrik a little while to get his head around the fact that he now had people in his life who cared what happened to him and if he was honest there were still times when he had to remind himself of that. For such a long time after he was brought back the only person he’d really had consistently in his life was Crowley and the demon had always made his intentions clear. Henrik was pretty sure that deep down Crowley cared about him, after all the two of them had looked out for each other more than they had perhaps needed to, but that paled in comparison to the people that he had in his life now. Henrik didn’t remember what Cas had once meant to him but he couldn’t deny that he felt a connection there and he was certain that the angel did too. He didn’t know what had happened after he’d died but he was pretty sure that the images he had seen while he was breaking Cas out of Hell were memories so something told him that the two of them did perhaps know each other after all although those memories were still lost to Henrik for the moment. Now he had more people that he cared about though, people that he knew he didn’t want to worry, so he knew that he perhaps should have told them where he was going but if he had been honest with them then he knew that they would have only tried to stop him. He had told Elijah and Olivia some things about the time he had spent in Hell but there were certain things that he felt that he couldn’t share with them just yet without it changing the way they felt about him and that was the last thing that he wanted to have happen. After he’d helped Crowley escape from Hell he had made himself a promise that he was never going to go back there but as soon as he’d learned that someone else was being held prisoner there he’d known that he really hadn’t had any choice and he stood by his decision to go even now. Cas would have died down there if he hadn’t managed to break him out and Henrik knew that he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he’d let that happen. Now he was finally back in Mystic Falls and even though he couldn’t deny he was exhausted h was glad that Olivia had decided to stop by. “I can sleep later, spending time with you is much more important,” he assured her, wrapping his arms around her as she moved to sit next to him. This was all new to Henrik, he’d never been in a relationship before and he would be the first to admit that he didn’t really know what he was doing but being around Olivia never failed to make him feel happy and in that moment he couldn’t help but feel like he didn’t have a care in the world now that he was home once more. “You’re in luck because I’m not planning on going anywhere again anytime soon,” he promised. While it was true that he never tended to know when he might get a call from Crowley asking for help there wasn’t anything else that he felt that he needed to do right now so he knew that he was going to be in Mystic Falls for the foreseeable future although with Olivia and the rest of his family and friends in the town he knew that he would always find his way back to them anyway. Kissing the top of her head gently, Henrik nodded as she asked whether everything had gone ok. “I think so. The person I went to help is still in a bad way but he’s better than he was and I’m not going to stop until he is at full strength again,” he explained before his expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “How have things been here while I was gone?” he asked. He knew that he should probably tell Olivia where he had been, after all he was pretty sure that he owed her that much at least, but she hadn’t asked so he wasn’t sure whether the answer to that question was one that she wanted to hear anyway so for now he knew that he should probably keep it to himself. Promises were bright, shiny rings in your life, easy to grab onto and hold, almost like stars glimmering in your future, offering so much. The problem was that those rings were slippery and you never knew when your grip would be loosened by something far beyond your control. For decades George had kept those he had made to her, in her mother’s kitchen, in those fields in the middle of war, in front of a priest as the two of them had been married. In sickness and health, although it was always the latter thanks to what they were, for richer or poorer, for better for worse. Olivia had never expected that he would be keeping the last part, not until centuries had passed and they were both practically ancient. Til death did them part. For so long she’d been shattered by that, unable to pick up the pieces … not until someone had been there beside her, helping to do that. By the time she’d found her way to Mystic Falls, back to the person who she’d now swear had help to start that off, Olivia liked to believe she had a handful of her life gathered back together. There were still cracks in it left by what had happened, but she had been holding those together pretty well, letting her time and the life she was making for herself here start to knit them back together. That had been until Henrik had gone on his trip. Then the neuroses had settled in and no amount of throwing herself into work had been able to convince her that there weren’t dark clouds gathering on the horizon, looming over him. She was pretty sure that Remi had noticed, given Elijah’s behavior this evening, she was fairly sure that Henrik’s brother had been able to see right through her too. As she’d rushed through the door to find him sleeping she’d tried to bury that beneath the sort of poker face she’d never had. The last thing she wanted was for Henrik to think she’d been sitting there driving herself mad with images of what would never happen.
It was easier to shove them down into those tiny cells in the base of her mind when his arms were around her, anchoring her to her sanity. Lips curving, Olivia bent to touch them to his forehead again. ”You won’t get to do much of that if you pass out on me,” she crooned softly. Not that she’d wake him up again. She would be content here, right next to him. That hold she had on her fear was able to loosen as he promised he wasn’t going to be heading anywhere again any time soon. Resisting the urge to let out a sigh of relief, Olivia smiled. ”As your boss I’m glad to hear it, we missed you around the bar. Me and Remi had to haul the cases of beer up out of the basement all by ourselves.” Not that they would’ve allowed Henrik to do it when they were there, they were both equally capable of hauling the boxes around but it felt good to be able to tease after days of finding herself stretching thinner and thinner. Olivia’s heart slipped into her throat as she felt Henrik’s lips against the top of her head though, hazel eyes clouding with it as she looked up at his face. ”I’m glad to hear they’re OK,” she said softly, but that worry for him was back. Brows drawn together she settled her hand on his chest, covering his heart in a way that allowed her to feel the beat of it through her palm. ”If there’s anything I can do to help, you know I’ll gladly volunteer.” Swallowing back the worry she mustered up a trace of a smile, settling her head back against his shoulder. ”Quiet,” she admitted. ”Ares tried to step in at the bar, I have to admit he’s better at kicking them all out at closing than he is trying to pour drinks. I thought the customers were going to riot.” She’d been glad of the distraction though, happy that she had those close enough to her now to want to help when they noticed her starting to flounder.

There was a time when Henrik wouldn’t have thought too much about going on a mission that Crowley sent him on. This time had been different, the demon had told him that someone was being kept prisoner in Hell but he hadn’t given him any more information than that and the rest had been left for Henrik to piece together. He knew that he could have ignored what Crowley had told him and left the prisoner there but it wasn’t in him to abandon someone in need so he had known that there was no way that he could do that. He hadn’t told anyone where he was going or what he was planning on doing because he hadn’t wanted them to worry but it seemed that they had done so anyway. Henrik wasn’t used to having people around who cared about him, for years the only person he’d had to answer to was Crowley and there were times when it had felt like the demon hadn’t particularly cared whether he’d lived or died. He had been a weapon to the demon and someone to do his bidding but now that had changed. Henrik was still loyal to Crowley and he knew that he probably always would be considering that the demon had been the one to bring him back from the dead and had essentially raised him but now his decisions were his own to make and he knew that that was just how it should be. Crowley had pointed him in the direction of where Cas was being held prisoner in Hell but Henrik had found him and broken him out of there and he was determined to get to the bottom of where he knew the angel from as well. There was something familiar about him but the memories felt like they were just beyond his reach and he knew that he wanted to change that. “I’m awake, I promise,” Henrik assured her, forcing his eyes to open a little more. He was tired but it had been a while since he had last seen Olivia and he knew that he wasn’t ready to fall asleep just yet. He knew that he had worried Olivia, it was written all over his face, and that was something that he honestly regretted. He cared about her and the last thing he wanted was for her to end up worrying about him especially after losing George the way she had done but he had been careful and as far as he knew he wasn’t going to have to end up leaving Mystic Falls again for a while so he could at least try and make it up to her now. “Sorry about that,” he chuckled. He also wasn’t used to having to worry about leaving the others in the lurch at work and he knew that he was going to have to be careful not to do that again. As Olivia said that she would gladly volunteer if there was anything she could do to help, Henrik felt a smile touch his lips. “I know you would. If I think of anything I’ll let you know,” he assured her. Deep down he knew that he should probably tell her where he had gone and just who it was that he had ended up saving but he couldn’t bring himself to do it just yet and she hadn’t asked so he wasn’t sure whether she actually wanted to know the answer. It was easy to skirt around the issue without any direct questions being asked and even though he hated not being honest with her, at the same time he knew that he didn’t want to worry her any more than he already had done. Letting his head rest against Olivia’s, he couldn’t help but laugh as she spoke again. “Why am I not surprised?” he chuckled. “How many glasses did he break?”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Life was never going to be smooth sailing. Olivia had heard it often enough from her mother even as a child, as the dozen of them had been sat around the kitchen table for dinner, the single pot of stew that had been bubbling away on the stove providing dinner for them all. By then her eldest sister had been engaged, ready to marry her husband-to-be in just a few short weeks. It should’ve been a fairytale but in their part of London even that sort of thing rarely was. Every life had blips in it, pot holes just waiting to catch you and break an ankle. It had happened to their mother, or rather to the father of all her brothers and sisters. She’d never met him, stolen as he had been by an aneurysm before Alice had even been born. A major road hump in all of their lives that had left Florence constantly scrambling to try and bring up not only her own eleven children but the one she’d found literally on her doorstep too. Olivia hadn’t known how her mother had the strength until she’d come to a devastating twist in the road of her own life. When George had died she’d almost followed him over that edge, only clinging on because she knew he’d given her life for his. Henrik coming into her life had made it feel like maybe the road was going to be smooth sailing for a while but the things that happened in this town, that she knew he’d done for Crowley before, had swum through her head, spinning out of control.
Leaving her faintly embarrassed now as she woke Henrik up by rushing over here. Rue burned in the pit of his stomach as she saw him rouse himself a little more. She made a sound low in her throat as she drew back. ”I won’t keep you up too long,” she promised. It would’ve been a cruelty, selfish of her to want to soothe her own worries while he obviously needed the rest. Settling back, Olivia pretended to flex an arm at his apology. ”We’ll just call it an extra work out for both of us this week.” They’d managed it before Henrik had asked about a job at the bar and they’d managed it with him away. If push had come to shove Ares had been there. Olivia knew that on the surface she looked deceptively fragile but there was an incredible strength inside of her that George had taught her to utilize. From the very start she’d been determined to use it for good. It had her tapping her hand lightly against Henrik’s chest now. ”You do that,” she told him. ”I’d rather be by your side, watching your back.” Avoiding sitting at home with her stomach in knots. If it hadn’t been for the distraction of the bar and those around her she might’ve driven herself crazy. Henrik had come to know them all well enough to laugh at the mental image of Ares trying to give her a hand. Feeling the vibration of his laughter through his ribs she grimaced good naturedly. ”Five or six,” she admitted. ”Can you believe a trained marine can’t handle pouring beer? It was a horror show at times, especially when he was trying to keep a big order straight, he tried though.” And she’d appreciated that beyond belief.

Henrik knew that he probably should have told Olivia and his family where he was going but he knew that they only would have tried to stop him if he had. In the past he hadn’t had to answer to anyone other than Crowley and back then most of what he had done had been at the bidding of the King of Hell but now things were different. Now Henrik was free to make his own decisions and as soon as he had learned that someone was being held captive in Hell he had known that he’d had to break them out of there. He had already helped Crowley escape from right under Azazel’s nose and Henrik knew his way around the place better than just about anyone else after the years he had spent living down there. When he hadn’t been studying magic and the way the world had changed during those years he had been exploring Hell and getting to know every inch of it. It had made sneaking in and out without Crowley knowing what he was up to that much easier and it really had served him well so far to say the least. He knew that he wouldn’t take what he had done back for a moment as it meant that Castiel’s life had been spared but Henrik was still trying to figure out how he knew the angel when he was certain that they hadn’t met before he died or after he was brought back. It was something that vexed him but he knew that he would figure it out. He felt bad that he had worried Olivia but now that he was home he knew that he could at least make it up to her. “I’ll make some coffee in a bit and I’ll be fine,” Henrik assured her before opening the pizza box once more and helping himself to a slice. “Are you hungry?” he asked as he tilted the box towards her before slipping his arm around her shoulders once more. Taking a bite of pizza, he felt a smile work its way across his face as he looked over at her. “I’ll make it up to you, don’t worry,” he assured her. He knew that Olivia and Remi had managed just fine before he’d asked if she’d had any jobs going but since then he had been doing his best to help out as much as he could. He hadn’t known what he would think of it at first but the truth was that he enjoyed the job and being around Olivia while he was there was definitely a bonus and he always tried to make things easier for her when he could. Finishing his slice of pizza, Henrik’s expression turned serious as Olivia spoke again. “I know. If I’d gone somewhere different then I might have taken you up on that but I couldn’t risk it this time. The thought of anything happening to you terrifies me,” he admitted. It had been easy for him to navigate his old home and between them he and Castiel had managed to fight off all of the demons that had ended up getting in their way. Had Olivia been with them then he knew that she would have been a great help but at the same time he had known that things could have quite easily gone south and he hadn’t wanted to put her in that kind of danger. Hearing that Ares had ended up breaking five or six glasses while he had been trying to help out was enough to make Henrik laugh. “It was good of him to try but now I’m back I’ll be there whenever you need me,” he offered. “I’m sorry I left you in the lurch like that.” It hadn’t been planned but he had known that he couldn’t just turn his back on someone who needed help but he still felt bad about putting Olivia in that position. He was tired. Olivia knew he could’ve been wracked with bone deep exhaustion, his brain grinding to a near halt behind those usually sharp eyes, and he still would’ve told her that he was fine. George had been the same, always falling back on that steel spine that had carried them both through things she couldn’t even imagine. Long before even her first husband had been born Henrik had lost his life brutally. For a thousand years he’d watched his family, had known what they had done for all that time. Tortured by what they had become, pursued by their father relentless. It was enough to break a heart but Henrik hadn’t let it shatter him. Brought back by a demon he hadn’t fallen into the ways that Crowley undoubtedly would’ve loved him too. There was too much good in him for that and it was that huge heart that had attracted her to him in the first place. Olivia settled her fingers over that heart, finding the steady beat of it and the strong arch of muscle and bone beneath them reassuring. No matter what had been asked of him Henrik had come through it one way or another. She should’ve been able to hold onto that while he’d been away but her own experiences had left the foundations beneath her heart shaky and keeping hold of her certainty hadn’t been easy. Not now, she told herself, he was back, fighting off his tiredness to take care of her.
Olivia knew she was going to keep feeling a little bit guilty for it but for now she pushed it aside, giving him a faint nudge from her perch beside him. For what she’d done she was going to be the one taking care of him tonight. ”You mean I’ll make you some coffee in a bit,” she chided. Teeth sinking into her lower lip Olivia eyed the pizza and heard the echoing rumble in the pit of her stomach. Between busy nights at the bar and worry over Henrik being gone she hadn’t exactly watched what she’d eaten, she certainly hadn’t slipped away for lunch. ”Starved,” she admitted sheepishly, reaching into the box for a slice. There was a faint groan of satisfaction as she bit into it, keeping the greasy triangle from draping over his chest like a blanket. ”I’m going to feel awful working you to the bone,” she said, wincing faintly. But she might just do it for five minutes before she caved and called it off. Henrik hadn’t slipped off for a week on a beach, what he’d been doing was important and that meant that her and Remi putting in just a little more work was worth it. The thought of Henrik not having anybody at his back robbed her of her appetite but Olivia ate anyway, nibbling away at the edges of the slice until all she had left in her hand was the crust. She was squeezing it too hard as she admitted she’d rather be with him than sitting at him, its hard edges sharp against her palm. ”If it’s too dangerous for me then it’s too dangerous for you too,” she countered. But it was always easier risking your own life. Reaching across him, setting down the crust, Olivia set her mouth to his, kissing him hard for a moment. It terrified her too and it was such a relief that this time he’d come back safely. It had been the same sort of relief when she’d sent Ares off to get the last patrons out last night. ”You were doing something important. That means you don’t have to apologise. I’ll take Ares any day of the week if it means you get to do what you have to for a friend. Think you can teach him to keep a grip on the glasses though?” One sandy brow rose as she smiled to reassure him.

It was strange to think that it was just a couple of years ago when he really hadn’t had anyone in his life that he truly cared about. There had always been Crowley, of course, but ever since Henrik had been brought back to life the demon had been manipulating him and using him to do his bidding. At only thirteen when he died Henrik really hadn’t had any choice but to do as he was told after he was brought back but now his life was finally his own to do with as he wished. It had taken him a long time to find the courage to pull away and start living his life on his own terms but running into Elijah shortly after arriving in Mystic Falls had made him realise that it was time for him to do just that and he hadn’t regretted making that decision since that day. Running into Olivia and a few other faces from his past had been a bonus as well and he had been making sure that he spent as much time with the people he cared about as he could. He had friends and family in Mystic Falls now and he also had a woman he loved. He hadn’t told Olivia that last part but he was pretty sure that it was true. The two of them had been together for a while now and even before that there had been something between them. It had taken them both a long time to admit it but now that they had he knew that he didn’t want to go back to the way things used to be between them. Breaking into Hell so that he could free someone who was being tortured in his old home had been risky and he knew that there were so many ways in which it could have gone wrong but he and Cas had both made it out alive and as soon as he’d returned to town there was one person that he had been eager to see and now she was sat right next to him. He knew that Olivia would have been worried sick about him even though he had assured her that everything would be fine and he wouldn’t be surprised if Elijah had been the same way. For a long time Henrik hadn’t had to take anyone else’s feelings or fears into account but now he had people around him who genuinely cared about him so he knew that he needed to make sure that he filled them in from now on. “Your words, not mine,” Henrik said, a teasing smile working its way across his face as he looked over at her. “I’m more than capable of making it myself.” He was just exhausted. The amount of magic he had used over the last few days along with the physical exertion of getting Cas out of Hell and the long drive back to Mystic Falls had taken a lot out of him but he didn’t regret what he had done for a minute. It still bothered him that he recognised Cas from somewhere and just couldn’t put his finger on where that was but he knew that he just had to trust that sooner or later he would figure it out. “Help yourself,” Henrik said, sliding the box a little closer to Olivia so that she could grab a slice before taking another bite of his own slice of pizza. He really was hungry after everything that had happened that day and it was slowly waking him up a little as well which was always a bonus. “Don’t feel bad, it’s what I signed up for when you offered me the job,” he shrugged. He had offered to help out around the bar and he had jumped at the chance of having a proper job there when Olivia had offered it. He wasn’t afraid of hard work so he knew that he would do whatever needed to be done. “It’s not that, I know you can handle yourself,” he assured her gently. “This was different. I spent eight years living in Hell and I know how to hold my own against demons. I don’t want you seeing that side of my life,” he admitted. That was somewhere that he never wanted Olivia to end up going and he would do whatever he had to in order to stop it from happening. He knew that she would have been a great asset to have with him but he hadn’t been able to bring himself to ask her. She had never gone up against demons and he knew how ruthless they could be so he hadn’t wanted to risk Olivia’s life on a rescue mission for someone that he had felt sure was a stranger. Soon enough Olivia’s lips met his and he kissed her back. He had never felt that way about anyone before and it was something that he cherished wholeheartedly. “I think he might be beyond help but I’ll do my best,” he grinned as she asked if he could teach Ares to keep hold of the glasses. It had been an eternity since she’d had anybody else to worry about. Despite the distance of miles and years, and the fact that she’d never met them, Olivia felt like checking in on her great nieces and nephews was her responsibility but they were safe there, living their own lives without much regard for the third or fourth cousin they’d never met. Olivia wouldn’t have had them feeling guilty for it but it had been one more way in which she hadn’t been tethered to anybody. George’s death had cut her free, leaving her floating, out of control at times, caught up in the tides of other people’s life for brief moments until she was torn free again. For so long she’d believed that it was better for all of them that way, anchors could be cut away with such brutality that you were torn apart by it. Olivia had suspected that she wouldn’t survive that again but finding Nick and Lauren in Mystic Falls, finding Henrik here and a life she hadn’t known she’d ever have again she’d come to realise that she was far stronger than she’d spent the last few decades believing. Some part of her had been shaking at the bad feeling she’d had about him while he was gone but with Henrik here, shadows under his eyes and the sound of sleep not long gone from his voice Olivia knew that no matter what happened that part would survive. It was just all the stronger for him being here, for the two of them being together.
Olivia let out a low sound as she pressed her lips to his teasing smile for a moment. Oh she knew he was perfectly capable but she was here and she didn’t look half as exhausted as he did. ”They were mine,” she admitted, settling back. ”And since I don’t look like I’m carrying trunks around under my eyes, I’ll do the making.” After all, if she hadn’t turned up, he’d still have been asleep, getting the rest that he needed after he had done what was needed to help out a friend. Reaching past him she took a slice of the pizza, settling down carefully to fill her own stomach. One sandy brow rose, her lips curving around the mouthful of pizza she was chewing. ”To be my servant?” Olivia asked after she swallowed. She lifted her free hand, swiping the back of it against her greasy lips. It hadn’t been that at all and the fact that she had fallen for him, that she knew him well enough to see how exhausted he was, meant that she wouldn’t work him hard at all until felt ready to come back. There were things out there in the world that were always going to take precedence over the bar. Olivia felt her heart twist in her chest for him, her fingers crushing the crust. ”You never have to hide any part of your life from me,” she promised, knowing that he was only saying it because he cared about her. She was fully capable but had the shoe been on the other foot Olivia knew she’d have done the same. This was about wanting to protect one another and Olivia poured all of that care, all of that love for him into the kiss before she eased back and lightened the mood. ”Way beyond it,” she admitted with a chuckle. ”It was good having him there though, he kept my mind off of everything and I’ll give him credit for paying for the glasses too. You should take another day or two…” Her finger tips traced over his cheek bones as she looked into his eyes. She didn’t want him rushing back because of her.

For a long time Henrik hadn’t really had to think too much about making anyone worry about him. He knew that Crowley had cared, after all the demon had become a father to him during the time that they had lived in Hell together, but Henrik liked to think that he had proved that he could take care of himself. Now he had his family around him wanting to make sure that he returned to them again and he had Olivia too. There were times when Henrik had to remind himself to be more careful now, after he was brought back he hadn’t thought that anyone would miss him if anything happened to him again but now he knew that he couldn’t be more wrong about that. He had people around him who loved him and that he loved in return and he knew that the last thing he wanted was to do something stupid and end up being taken away from them again. They might have thought that it was reckless of him to break into Hell and rescue Castiel on his own but Henrik knew the place like the back of his hand and he hadn’t gone down there blindly. He had spent days observing the shift patterns and movements of the demons before making his move and even though the rescue mission hadn’t gone quite as well as he had hoped it would they had both made it out of there alive and he knew that he had done the right thing. He still didn’t know exactly how he and Castiel were connected but there was definitely something there, something that seemed just beyond the edges of his memories, and he was determined to get to the bottom of what it was sooner or later. Right now, though, he was back home where he belonged and he knew that his priority had to be Olivia and eventually making sure that he got some rest. “If you’re sure,” Henrik said, knowing better than to argue with Olivia right now. He had told her that he was going out of town for a few days but he hadn’t told her what he was planning on doing so he knew better than to push his luck. He knew that she understood what he’d had to do, he could see that written all over her face, but there were still some things that he knew that he wanted to protect her from if he could and that side of his life definitely fell into that category. Taking a bite of the slice of pizza he was holding, Henrik couldn’t help but laugh as Olivia asked if he had signed on to be her servant. “I think that was in the fine print when we got together,” he grinned. The truth was that he would do anything for Olivia and he was pretty sure that she knew it. He hadn’t been in love before but he was certain that he had fallen for her and he wasn’t afraid to admit that to himself even if he hadn’t actually said it out loud yet. “I know I don’t but I want to protect you from that darkness for as long as I can.” Henrik was pretty sure that he was never going to be able to escape that darkness completely but he wanted to keep Olivia out of it as much as possible. When it came to Crowley that was different, the demon was family to him so he had no problem whatsoever with Olivia getting to know him but he didn’t want her drawn into the world of demons and Hell at all if he could help it. “It could have been worse then,” he grinned before shaking his head as Olivia said that he should take another day or two before going back to work. “I’ll be fine after a good night’s rest, I promise.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

She’d forgotten what it was like to be tethered to anybody in any sort of way. Not just with her heart, although the fact that she actually could be after what had happened with George had come as a bolt out of the blue with her. Just in any way, having connections that made a life somewhere rather than just an existence, it had changed everything. Nick, Lauren, Luke, the kids, Ares and her employees, and most of all Henrik. Olivia lifted her head slightly, hazel eyes narrowing beneath the fringe of her lashes as she eyed him. He’d been the biggest instigator of all, the one who’d made sure those roots had gone that bit deeper here. Not that she would’ve run, not without something disastrous happening after she’d signed on the dotted line for the bar, but Henrik had been a key to it all. With him around she could see another life laid out in front of her, the paths through it higgledy-piggledy like those that had criss-crossed the fields the gun emplacements had always been set in. Nothing every straightforward but a ramble where almost every step was enjoyable. Dead ends, pot holes, exposure, highwaymen – there would always be some crazy threats to whatever happened but Olivia wanted so much to believe that she could meet them all head on now, given strength by a man who’d disappeared for a few days to do whatever he could for a friend. A good man.
Lifting her hand from his chest, Olivia traced an arc under his eye with the tip of one thumb She really did feel guilty that she’d woken him. Knowing that he was home she could’ve waited a few hours and let him sleep some of this exhaustion off instead of getting him stuck into a second wind. ”Absolutely,” she assured him. She’d made it decaf too, nothing that would delay him getting the sleep that he needed. Sneaky could be her middle name when it needed to be. Olivia hummed low in her throat as she licked the grease from her lips. ”I don’t think I read that well enough,” she mused, her lips creasing into a grin. ”I like the idea though. Someone to feed me grapes while I lounge around in bed. It’s got its appeal.” Winking at him, she took a second bite of her pizza. That was a major part of caring deeply for somebody, being willing to go to the ends of the earth for them. Or beyond if necessary. George had done that for her and Olivia knew she’d never stop be grateful to him for it, despite the pain. Twice he had saved her life so that she could be right here, right now. Her throat felt raw as she swallowed, the lopsided smile she managed tinged with sadness. ”I’ve already seen darkness and I’m not planning on shying away from it if it comes again,” she told him honestly. She would do all she could to shield him from that too, fighting to protect those she loved. The laughter over Ares’ attempts to help her eased that ache in her chest. ”Miles worse,” she promised. She leaned over him for a moment, setting what was left of her slice back in the box. ”We should get that. A couple of hours at least. Here or bed?” Her lips pressed together, her hazel eyes narrowing in a way that was meant to brook no argument.

Henrik knew that his days of going on missions for Crowley were over and they had been ever since he had arrived in Mystic Falls and found out that his siblings were alive but the truth was that as soon as he had learned that there was someone being held captive in Hell he had known that there was no way that he was ever going to stand by and let that continue. He had lived in Hell for eight years and it wasn’t something that he would wish on anyone. There were those that deserved to be there but he had seen what sometimes happened to those who ended up there and weren’t meant to be there and from what Crowley had told him the person being held prisoner shouldn’t have ever been there in the first place. Henrik had been lucky while he was there, Crowley had raised him and taught him magic so the demons had left him alone for the most part aside from being annoying chaperones wherever he went but others were tortured while they were down there and Cas had unfortunately ended up having to endure that. He still didn’t know exactly how he knew the angel but he had memories of him now that didn’t quite make sense and Cas had recognised the chess piece that Henrik had found in his hand the day that Crowley had brought him back. He hadn’t known why back then and he still didn’t know why now but it had brought him comfort when he had needed it most and it had given him a feeling like it came from family. He had known that it was crazy since his siblings never would have given him such a thing but he had kept it with him nonetheless and he hoped that sooner or later Cas would fill him in properly. Until then Henrik knew that he needed to get back to normal and that meant reaching out to Olivia and his siblings and letting them know that he was home safe. He had done just that when he had returned to the apartment before quickly falling asleep on the sofa and it felt like only moments later when Olivia arrived. Had he not been so exhausted then he knew that he would have headed straight to the bar to let her know that he was back but instead he had settled for a text and he knew that he shouldn’t really be surprised that she was just as eager to see him as he was to see her and that she had headed straight over. “Alright,” Henrik conceded, knowing better than to argue with her about it. The truth was he wasn’t entirely sure that he had enough energy to move just yet anyway. While he was at the motel healing Cas’ injuries and filling the Winchesters in on what had happened he had felt fine but as soon as he had sat down the exhaustion had hit him and he knew that both the events of the last few days and the amount of magic that he had used were taking their toll on him now and he needed some time to recharge. “You might not have done but I did,” he said, a playful smile working its way across his face as he looked over at her. Taking a bite of a slice of pizza he couldn’t deny that he was already starting to feel a little better with some food in his stomach but he knew that he would still need to get some rest soon enough. “You’re one of the strongest people I know so I know you won’t but Hell is completely different to anything you have faced before and I don’t want you getting dragged into that part of my life,” he said, hoping that she would understand. “Crowley is different, he’s family and I want you to get to know him but other demons are different and I don’t want them having any reason to target you.” Henrik knew that he would never be able to forgive himself if something happened to Olivia so as far as he was concerned that just wasn’t an option and he knew that he needed to keep her and that part of his life separate. “I’ll be back at work soon enough and then you won’t have to worry,” he assured her before feeling a half smile work its way across his face. “You’re not going to back down on that, are you?” he asked although the look on her face really said it all. “Bed. We’ll get more rest there,” he said as he finished his slice before forcing himself to his feet and holding his hands out to Olivia. OLIVIA CAMPBELL
