With Niklaus back in Mystic Falls Henrik knew that his family wasn’t going to end up having the fairytale reunion from the stories that he had been told while he was growing up but he still hoped that sooner or later his family would be brought back together once more. He and Elijah had already reconnected and the two of them were living together in an apartment in town and one by one Henrik was trying to undagger his other siblings. He knew that had to be the last thing that Nik would want, after all he was the one to have driven a dagger through each of their hearts for one reason or another, but Henrik had spent eight years believing his siblings to be dead before he made his way to Mystic Falls and he knew that the last thing he wanted was for them to spend any more time apart now that he had the means to bring them back together again. It didn’t matter to him what his siblings had done to end up on the receiving end of Niklaus’ wrath, Henrik had always loved his brother and the two of them had always been close but he knew that what Mikael had done to Nik had taken its toll and Henrik hoped that between him and Elijah they might be able to talk some sense into their brother. At the moment Nik had no idea that he was alive, after all Henrik had sworn Elijah to secrecy until after the ritual so that Nik wouldn’t have the chance to try and stop him from following through with his plan to bring back all of the people that his brother planned on using as sacrifices. As it was all of them had been brought back to life and most of them were safe, although he had to admit that he wasn’t sure about Grace since she seemed to have gone off the grid completely, so now he knew that he could finally give bring his family back together the attention that it deserved. Finding a way around the cloaking spell that Niklaus had had his witches place on the coffins had taken some time but eventually he had managed it and not too long ago he had managed to free Kol from his prison. Normally Henrik would have stuck around and filled his brother in on what had happened and if he was honest he had wanted to do just that but when Crowley had called even though he no longer did everything that the demon asked he had known that he’d had to answer it and by the time he had returned Kol had already taken off. A locator spell later and Henrik was on his way to the Grill. If he was honest he wasn’t sure what Kol’s reaction was going to be when he got there but he knew that he had to see it for himself. His decision to go and see the men turn into wolves had affected all of his siblings in different ways and to say that he felt guilty about that would be an understatement. Elijah had lost Tatia to his bloodlust, Niklaus had been forced to endure a thousand years with his werewolf side locked away, Rebekah had missed out on the chance to start a family of her own and Kol had lost his magic. Finn was the only one that Henrik hadn’t really heard much about since he returned but he knew that he was going to have to face them all sooner or later so he might as well get on with it. Elijah hadn’t blamed him for what had happened but he wasn’t sure whether the same would be true of Nik, Kol, Rebekah and Finn and the truth was that scared him but he knew that it was time to face that fear. With that in mind Henrik took a deep breath before pushing open the doors and stepping into the Grill. Glancing around him it didn’t take him long to spot the familiar face of his older brother and he made his way straight up to the bar, only coming to a stop when he reached the empty stool beside his brother. “May I?” he asked, indicating to the stool before catching the attention of the bartender and ordering himself a scotch. Henrik knew that freeing their siblings wasn’t something that Nik wanted but the truth was that Henrik still didn’t understand how his brother had been able to dagger them in the first place. There was a time when that wasn’t the Nik that he had known and always been close to but from what Elijah had told him a lot had changed in the thousand years that had passed since he had died. Nine years had passed since Henrik had been brought back to life and he had aged normally since then so rather than the thirteen year old he had been when he died he was now in his early twenties but while his outward appearance had changed and he knew that he had grown up a lot during those nine years he knew that he was still the same person that he had always been, albeit a lot stronger than he had been back then. Crowley had brought him back to life and had made him learn as much about magic as he could and for a long time Henrik had thought that the demon had simply wanted someone to do his bidding but now he knew that the real reason Crowley had brought him back was so that he could convince his siblings to side with the demon when the time came. Unfortunately that plan had failed as he had refused to let his siblings get dragged into Crowley’s fight with Azazel and while Henrik still helped Crowley out on occasion, that was a decision that he still stood by now. He knew that he had done the right thing pulling away from Crowley and he knew that he would do it again if he had to. Breaking away had meant that he’d had more time to reconnect with Elijah, Olivia and other faces from his past that had ended up moving to Mystic Falls and it had given Henrik the chance to start living his life for himself for the first time since he was brought back. Things were going better than he had thought that they would but there was still something missing and that was his family. He had made a promise to himself after he broke away from Crowley that he was going to use his magic to atone for the sins that had been committed since his decision to go and watch the men turn into wolves all those years ago and while he knew better than to think that he would ever be able to make up for everything that had happened he knew that he at least had to try. He had been doing his best to help those around him, even going so far as to break an angel out of Hell where he was being held captive, but that day he had decided to do something for himself instead. Nik probably had a coven of witches protecting the coffins that their family were trapped in but they were no match for blood magic and Henrik had soon managed to feel Kol. He had wanted to stick around and tell his brother what had happened but Crowley had called and by the time he had returned to the warehouse, Kol was gone. Finally Henrik found him at the Grill and he nodded as Kol said that he could help himself to the seat. “Thanks,” he said, taking the seat before catching the eye of the bartender and ordering himself a drink. He could almost feel Kol’s eyes burning a hole in him as his brother studied him and Henrik lifted the glass the bartender had given him to his lips and took a sip before answering his brother’s question. “Don’t tell me you have forgotten me, Loki,” he said, using the nickname he had given his brother a long time ago as he turned to look at Kol. Henrik didn’t understand the reason why Nik had decided to dagger their siblings in the first place but one thing he did know was that he wanted his family to be together again. After he was brought back he had spent eight years believing that his siblings had died a thousand years ago only to find out that he had been wrong about that shortly after arriving in Mystic Falls. Since then he had spent time getting to know Elijah again which was made easier by the fact that the two of them shared an apartment but other than Nik the rest of the family had been locked away for a long time and that was something that Henrik was eager to set right. One by one he had taken to freeing his siblings from their coffins and even though he knew that Nik wouldn’t be happy about it, the truth was that to Henrik it was worth the risk. He had spent too long living his life without his siblings by his side and reconnecting with Elijah had made him want his family to be whole again and he would do whatever he could in order to make that happen. It hadn’t taken Elijah long to believe who he was but with Kol he knew that it would be much more difficult. Elijah had at least had the liberty of being able to live his life over the last few decades whereas Kol had been trapped in a wooden box, betrayed by his own family if what Henrik had been told was true. It was going to be much more difficult to earn his trust but Henrik was more than ready to fight for it. The moment he called Kol the nickname that he had given him a thousand years before, something in his brother seemed to change but Henrik knew better than to let that get to him. He knew that his siblings had changed during the time that he had been gone but with Elijah he still saw traces of the man he had known back then and he hoped that the same would prove true of Kol as well. “Whoever said I was?” he questioned as Kol told him not to patronise him. He was doing no such thing, he simply wanted to reconnect with his older brother although it was a relief to know that Kol at least seemed to recognise the nickname. Lifting his glass to his lips as Kol challenged him, Henrik didn’t even turn to look at his brother until he had finished speaking and instead finished his drink. “Sit down Loki. You don’t scare me, you never have,” Henrik said as he gestured for the bartender to refill his now empty glass and to top up Kol’s. “Bringing someone back from the dead isn’t actually as difficult as you might think if they haven’t been dead for that long,” he said once they were alone. Bringing someone back who had died a long time ago was something that he had yet to figure out but someone clearly had, otherwise he wouldn’t be there and neither would Tatia. Knowing that he was going to need more than a nickname to convince his brother as to his identity, Henrik took a sip of his fresh drink before realising what he had to do and his fingers moved deftly under the bar as he conjured a forget-me-not and placed the blossom on the bar in front of Kol. “Recognise this?” he asked as he studied his brother carefully. “You spent weeks perfecting how to make a bunch of these with magic so that you could impress Tatia and start courting her.” That had been their secret back then and Henrik hadn’t told a soul so he hoped that it would hold more sway with his brother than the nickname had. Ever since learning what Nik had done to his siblings, Henrik had wanted to free them. Finding them hadn’t been easy given the strength of the spells that his brother’s witches had used to conceal them but even they were no match for blood magic. Henrik hated what his mother had done to his siblings after he died, they had been turned into something else entirely and he knew that Elijah at least thought himself to be a monster. Too many lives had been turned upside down as a result of his childish desire to go and watch the men turn into wolves and Henrik knew that no matter how much he might want to he could never take back what had happened after that but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t try and make it better for the people around him now. Helping those that Nik had used in the ritual and using his magic to aid others around town still felt like it was never going to be enough to earn redemption for everything that had happened since he died but it was a step in the right direction. Henrik hadn’t known that magic flowed through his veins before he died but now Crowley had helped him tap into it and he knew that he wanted to use it for the right reasons. Nik hadn’t liked the fact that Henrik had started freeing their siblings from their coffins but as far as the warlock was concerned it was something that he felt like he had to do. More than anything he wanted his whole family around him and he hoped that if he could bring them all together in the same place then he might just stand a chance at doing that. He knew what it was like to wake up in a completely different time to the one you were used to, after all he had gone through exactly that after Crowley had him brought back, but Kol seemed to be taking it in his stride and Henrik knew that that shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. His brother had always been resourceful and he had always found a way to bounce back no matter what happened so it was good to see that that hadn’t changed. “Suit yourself,” he nodded as Kol said that he would rather stand. Glancing over at his brother he had a feeling that the veins and fangs his brother displayed would be enough to intimidate most other people but after everything that he had been through over the last few years he knew how to protect himself when he needed to so he wasn’t worried. “Not all witches and warlocks rely on the ancestors, I don’t,” Henrik shrugged. His connection to magic ran so much deeper than that and that was just the way that he liked it. “Someone did bring me back and not just me, Tatia is here as well,” he explained. He didn’t know the first thing about what had happened to his brother over the centuries since they had both been gone other than what Elijah had told him but Henrik could already tell that the older brother he loved and had always looked up to was still in there and he knew that he owed him the truth. “The world is changing Loki, I’ve brought a few people back to life while I’ve been here,” he added. The only one of those he suspected that his brother would care about was Tatia but things were definitely changing and he wanted to make sure that his brother was aware of that. He could see the recognition on Kol’s features as he looked down at the forget-me-not and as Kol asked what it was he wanted, the emotion was evident in his brother’s voice. “It has been a long time since anyone last called me that,” he admitted, a fond smile touching his lips as he took a sip of his drink before setting it down in front of him and turning to face his brother. “I just want my family back together,” he shrugged before hugging Kol back tightly. “I’ve missed you, brother.”KOL MIKAELSON

Henrik had always loved his family and he had never been the kind of person to let anything change that. As the youngest he could have been left out by his older siblings but that hadn’t happened at all, even though he was sure that he had probably annoyed them at times they had all gone out of their way to spend time with him, all but Finn of course. He had never felt alone with the four of them and Lukas around and he had been happy. He had been a relatively quiet child, choosing to observe what was going on around him most of the time, but it had come in handy as it had given him the chance to see a side of his older siblings that few others got to see. Despite the age difference between them he had always tried to be there for each of his siblings as much as he could but he would be lying if he said that he hadn’t always had somewhat of a soft spot for Kol who had always thought of himself as being the black sheep of the family. He had tried to make sure that he didn’t feel so alone and he knew that there were certain things that he knew about his brother that the rest of the family didn’t such as the fact that he too had been in love with Tatia a long time ago but those were secrets that he would take with him to the grave again if he had to. “Nothing now,” Henrik said gently. “I was brought back by a demon, the King of Hell, because to use me as leverage to get all of you to join his side in the fight for Hell but he lost and now he’s in hiding. He thought that by bringing Tatia back too then she could be leverage as well but it didn’t work,” he explained, hoping that Kol would believe him. “Now we’re both free to live our lives with no strings attached and so are you.” It had taken him a long time to find out why Crowley had brought him back but ever since he’d helped Crowley escape Hell after Azazel took over the demon had seemed more content to leave him to his own devices. He still checked in on Crowley now and then but he was no longer tied to him in the way that he once had been. “As for why I’m telling you now, I thought you deserved the truth,” he added. The rest of the family knew who had brought him back so he wouldn’t have felt right about keeping Kol in the dark. The way Kol pulled away and turned away from him was enough to surprise Henrik but as his brother turned back to face him he could see the disbelief in his eyes. He knew that it had never been easy for Kol to trust anyone but this was something different, it seemed to run so much deeper than that, and he couldn’t help but wonder just what had happened to his older brother in the last thousand years aside from being daggered and left in a coffin for years by Niklaus to make him so distrustful. “I mean it Loki, I’ve missed you,” he said again, needing his brother to know that he wasn’t just trying to tell him what he thought he wanted to hear. “That’s why I freed you from the coffin. I hate how Nik treated you and I wanted to make that right. You deserve the chance to live your life just as much as he does.” He knew that Nik had been trying to protect their siblings in his own way but leaving them daggered in a coffin really wasn’t the way to do that and Henrik couldn’t help but wonder just what other damage had been done over the years. Henrik had accepted some time ago that things would never be able to go back to the way they used to be but that didn’t stop him missing those days any less. Things had never been perfect for their family, Mikael had been abusive to all of them and even though his siblings had tried to shield him from all of that Henrik wasn’t stupid. He had known what kind of man their father was and he had been on the receiving end of his cruel words on more than a few occasions but he had still always taken it upon himself to try and cheer his siblings up. He was the youngest out of all of them and there had been a few years between him and Rebekah when he died, even more with Kol, Nik, Elijah and Finn, but he had still loved them all. There were times when it had annoyed him that they had kept trying to protect him but now that he was older he knew why they had done it. He had people that he was protective now too and his siblings fell into that category. When he first arrived in Mystic Falls he hadn’t for one moment thought that he would end up building a life for himself there but that was exactly what had happened and he knew that he wanted the people that he cared to be a part of that. He was fortunate in that he had been reunited with Olivia and others had come into his life that he cared about but his family still wasn’t quite complete and he knew that he wanted to change that. Nik didn’t want him undaggering their siblings but Henrik wanted his family back together more than anything so this time he knew that it was worth it to go against Nik’s wishes. “I don’t know about that. It might have worked but the war was over before Crowley had the chance to carry out his plan,” Henrik shrugged. Even a thousand years later he still knew Kol well enough to be able to tell that his brother had his doubts about what he was being told and the truth was that Henrik couldn’t blame him. It had been such a long time since they had last seen each other, far too long in fact, and so much had happened since then. Henrik still hated the fact that his siblings had gone through so much because of his wish to go and see the men turn into wolves during the full moon and while he knew that he was never going to be able to take that back or make it up to them enough he still hoped that by bringing the family back together he might just find himself moving one step closer to redemption. Even as Henrik said that he had missed Kol he could see that his words had had an effect on his brother but exactly what that was remained to be seen. Henrik knew that Kol had been betrayed by their siblings more often than anyone else but Henrik had never been the one to do that and he knew that he never would be. He had always tried to be there for Kol and that hadn’t changed now. Thanking the bartender as they left the bottle, Henrik found himself studying his brother carefully. Kol didn’t completely trust him yet, that much was clear, and Henrik didn’t doubt that it would take time to earn his brother’s trust but he wasn’t going anywhere so he was more than willing to be patient. Picking up the glass that Kol slid in front of him, Henrik lifted it to his lips and took a sip as he chose his words carefully. “They did but not for the reason you think,” Henrik began as he set the glass down in front of him. “I ran into Elijah when I got to town. Until then I thought you had all died a thousand years ago,” he explained, his gaze steady as he looked over at his brother. “After I learned that Nik had the rest of you daggered in coffins I set about finding you. Rebekah’s was the first I was able to open but after that Nik moved you all to a different location. He didn’t find out I was alive that long ago,” he continued, lifting his glass to his lips and taking another sip. “I finally found you again but the spell on your coffin took time to break. His witches were clever with their magic because the longer you were in there the stronger it grew. I still haven’t managed to break the spell on Finn’s coffin yet but I will. I meant it when I said I want our family back together.”KOL MIKAELSON

After spending eight years believing that his siblings had died a thousand years before, Henrik had wanted nothing more than to have all of his siblings back in his life. Finding Elijah had been great and Henrik had enjoyed reconnecting with him but he hadn’t been able to shake the feeling that it wasn’t the same without the rest of their family around and he knew that Elijah felt the same. Nik had always been a free spirit and he had always tried to do whatever he could in order to protect the rest of them but even so Henrik had never thought that his brother would stoop to daggering the rest of their siblings in an attempt to keep them close. Rebekah had been daggered for decades but for Kol it had been much longer and for Finn it had been the longest of all. He had spent centuries locked away in a coffin for no other reason than because the rest of them thought that he was a bore and Henrik knew that that had to change. They all deserved the chance to live their lives and Henrik had quickly figured out that he wanted to use the second chance he had been given to free his siblings from the confines of their coffins so they too could have another chance at life. “Not particularly but I don’t care about that. He thought he was doing what was best for all of you and that he was protecting you by keeping you daggered but you all need to have the chance to live your lives the way you want to,” Henrik shrugged. Nik really hadn’t been happy about it but Henrik hadn’t let that stop him from freeing Rebekah and Kol and he knew that he wasn’t going to let it stop him from freeing Finn either. “It was difficult but not impossible, not for me. I was determined to free you,” he admitted as he took a sip of his drink. It had taken a while, longer than he had thought it would in fact, but he had managed it in the end and now there was one more person that he needed to free – Finn. “No, I’m not joking,” Henrik said simply as he took another sip of his drink. He knew that Finn had never been the easiest to get along with, something had kept him from connecting with all of them and he had been the dutiful son to both of their parents for the most part but that didn’t mean that he deserved to be locked away the way he was at the moment. “I can assure you Loki that I’m a lot of things but mad isn’t one of them. I meant it when I said I just want our family back together again,” he said sincerely as he looked over at his brother. “You might not trust me right now but in time I’ll earn it.” He knew that Kol had been wronged by their siblings but it was those wrongs that Henrik wanted to put right now. Kol had protected him from their father when they were younger and Henrik knew that it was time that he returned the favour. KOL MIKAELSON

Elijah had filled Henrik in on what had happened to the rest of their family after he’d died but it was different hearing about it than it was seeing it for himself. Henrik knew that he was a different person to the clueless kid that he was back then, he had changed a lot over the last few years and he knew that he was a lot stronger for it. It didn’t seem completely fair that he should have the chance to live a normal magical life the way he was while his siblings were forced to live their lives as vampires cut off from the magic that should have flowed through their veins. Rebekah was unable to have children the way she had always wanted and Kol had an insatiable bloodlust that was difficult to control. He knew that he wanted to make up for what had happened to them and even though he knew that he was never going to be able to change the past he could at least try and make things better for them from now on. Freeing Rebekah and Kol from their coffins was a good place to start as far as he was concerned but he knew that he still had a long way to go before his mind would start feeling a little more at ease. “I know things haven’t been easy for any of you but this is our chance to make things right. I’m not going to let Nik or anyone else lock you or Bex away again,” Henrik assured him. He didn’t agree with the way that Nik had treated their siblings but he did understand the reason behind it. That wasn’t going to happen again though, no matter what happened they deserved the chance to live and Henrik knew that he was going to make sure that they got it. This might not be the life that any of them had asked for but it was the one that they had been given and he hoped that his siblings would make the most of it the same way that he was trying to. Henrik planned on freeing Finn as well so all of his siblings would be back together and even though he knew that Kol didn’t necessarily approve, he also got the feeling that his brother wouldn’t stand in his way. “Our parents did wrong by all of us and whether they will get the chance to make things right or not I don’t know but we need to be better than they were. We can’t be at each other’s throats and we can’t turn our backs on each other. We need to stick together and that includes Nik and Finn,” he said, hoping that Kol would understand. Henrik had always been close to their mother so he would be lying if he said he didn’t hope that he might get the chance to see her again one day but when it came to their father Henrik had lived in fear of the man just like they all had so that was one person that he really would rather stay away from if he could help it. Taking a sip of his drink, Henrik felt a smile work its way across his face as he set his glass down in front of him. “I’m not naive Loki. When I help people I do so on my own terms and in my own way. I have friends in town that know they can call on me but I would never let anyone take advantage,” he explained. He knew better than that and Crowley had certainly taught him better. “At least now I can help look out for all of you the way you looked out for me when we were younger.” Now Henrik was able to defend himself and he could do the same for his family as well. The decision to free his siblings from their coffins had been an easy one for Henrik to make the moment he had learned what had happened to them. Ever since he had arrived in Mystic Falls and found Elijah again he had wanted nothing more than to bring his family back together and he still hadn’t given up hope that he would be able to do that. It wasn’t going to be easy and right now he was still mortal while his siblings would stay the same forever but Henrik knew that he wasn’t going to let that stop him. His family had always meant the world to him and that hadn’t changed. He had spent eight years believing at they had all died a thousand years ago before finally learning the truth and after finding out that they were still alive after all he had wanted to right the wrongs that had been done to all of them following that one decision he had made all those years ago that had lost him his life and changed the lives of his siblings forever. He had never wanted that to happen and he hated that it had done but he couldn’t change the past no matter how much he might want to so instead all he could do was try and make things better for all of them from now on. It was going to be much easier said than done but Henrik knew that freeing Kol and Rebekah from their coffins was a good start and seeing Kol again definitely made it worth it. Henrik knew that their other siblings hadn’t always necessarily understood Kol but Henrik had always looked up to him and they had always been close so he had been looking forward to seeing his brother again. “I know it will be far from easy but I also believe that deep down you all miss the bonds we had all those years ago and I refuse to believe that they are gone forever.” He and Elijah was still close even now and he hoped that in time it would be the same with Nik, Kol and Rebekah. Their family had wronged each other so often but they always stuck together when it mattered and he knew that he just had to believe that there was a way to get them to band together even when there wasn’t a threat looming on the horizon as well. “I know that what Nik did to all of you was awful but I think he has learned from what mistake,” he offered. Nik hadn’t retaliated against Rebekah when she was freed nor had he tried anything when he had learned that Henrik was the one responsible for freeing their siblings and that was progress as far as he was concerned. As Kol spoke again, Henrik rolled his eyes. “I’m not that bad,” he chuckled as he lifted his own glass to his lips and took a sip. Meeting Kol’s gaze steadily as he spoke again, his next words were enough to surprise Henrik and he found himself studying his brother carefully for a moment. “Why do you say that?” he asked, genuinely curious as to his brother’s reasons. “None of you are perfect but neither am I. I’ve made mistakes and one of them resulted in all of you becoming vampires in the first place. I’m not better than anyone.”KOL MIKAELSON

For years Henrik had believed that his siblings and everyone else that he had ever known had died a thousand years ago. He had grieved for them all and he had made his peace with the fact that he was never going to get to see any of them again because he had known that he didn’t have a choice in the matter. It had been a shock to learn that so many of the people he cared about were still alive after all and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. Learning what Nik had done to Rebekah, Kol and Finn had made Henrik angry and as soon as Elijah had told him he had decided that he was going to free the three of them no matter what. He wanted his whole family back together more than anything and he knew that he would stop at nothing to make it happen. They were all stubborn and he knew that they had all hurt each other in the past but at the end of the day they were still family and nothing was ever going to change that so Henrik knew that he just needed to find a way to get his siblings to see that. Henrik had never given up on his siblings when he was younger and he refused to give up on them now, especially when he knew that no matter what any of them said everything that had happened to them was because of a decision that he had made a thousand years ago. He was a completely different person back then and he knew that he had grown up a lot so he hoped that sooner or later he would find a way to bring them all back together. “I don’t know if those scars will ever truly go away but all of you might be able to find a way to move on from them at least,” Henrik shrugged as he took a sip of his drink. He knew that a lot had happened between his siblings and he couldn’t ignore all that they had been through and all that they had put each other through but he refused to let any of them push him away and he hoped that in time those wounds would slowly start to heal as well. “No he didn’t, just call it a brother’s intuition,” Henrik chuckled. Henrik was close to both Nik and Kol when he was younger and he knew just how different the two of them were. They were both stubborn and that could be their downfall at times so he wouldn’t be surprised if he had to end up knocking some sense into the two of them before they started seeing eye to eye. “What our parents did was awful and I’ll never understand why father has been hunting you all these years but your lives are your own and they can’t change that. I’ll never let father hurt any of you.” He knew that his siblings could all look out for themselves but for him it was different. He had his magic at his disposal and if he had to use it against his father in order to keep the rest of his family safe then he knew that he would do it. As Kol said that he was the most innocent out of all of them, Henrik shook his head. “I don’t know about that, not after everything I’ve seen and done,” he admitted as he took another sip of his drink. “I lived in Hell for eight years before coming here, I’m not the same person you all knew.”KOL MIKAELSON
