Feet dangling over the end of Scott’s bed to avoid shedding half of what he’d picked up in the woods onto the blankets, Stiles sprawled with his laptop propped on his stomach. Twice in as many months he’d been warned against breaking into a place without the knowledge or permission of the owner, hell, the second time Derek had been practically apoplectic over it, but this wasn’t Derek’s apartment or a store, this was Scott’s home. Had this been Mystic Falls that would’ve meant this room was second only to his own home but things in Mystic Falls were a step sideways from home, maybe even a glimpse in a funhouse mirror or a trip to an alternate universe. Most things were fundamentally the same and were minutely different all at the same time. Maybe if Derek hadn’t left him feeling as though he had no idea what Scott was up to these days things wouldn’t now be feeling so off kilter and he wouldn’t be here on his own, using Scott’s wifi to find out what there was to learn online about Derek’s mystery woman. Mystery, supernaturally enhanced, more than possibly homicidal, given Derek’s romantic history, bed mate. The guy had seriously crappy taste in women, definitely tending towards the praying mantis sort – beautiful but deadly and likely to bite your head off. Stiles knew his own taste in women wasn’t perfect, he’d spent half his life pining after Lydia while she hadn’t acknowledged his existence but he’d take going back to that from where they were now, which, he thought with a grin as he pictured the kiss they shared when she’d shown up in the middle of the night, was a pretty damn good place, if the alternative was a homicidal maniac. It was about time, about time for Scott’s heart to bounce back from losing Allison too.
With everything that had happened since they’d tracked the demon inhabiting Allison to the town it was about time that some blessings started arriving. When he’d turned up at Derek’s place three days ago the possibilities running through his mind certainly hadn’t been approaching blessings, it had all been hell tinged. Stiles frowned, his brows drawing together as he stared at his screen, scrolling through an online gallery of some Alix Quinn’s photography. Was Derek’s supernatural paramour as normal as the site would have him believe? Not likely. Derek had given him her name way too easily after he’d pushed for it for the whole thing not to be seriously hinky. Well, Stiles thought, this whole evening was meant to be about removing suspicions ... or it would be when Scott finally got back. The driveway and house had both been empty when he’d got here an hour after school. It was a toss-up as to who would get home first. If anybody showed up, ever. By the time the door swung open Stiles had started to drift. He sucked in a breath, rocking upright and nearly tipping his laptop on to the floor. Glazed eyes squinted at Scott, finally baffled at his friend’s presence in his bedroom until a glance around showed exactly where he was. ”Finally,” he grumbled on a yawn as he set his laptop aside. Stiles scrubbed a hand over his face before checking his watch. ”Man, you took your time. I’ve been waiting like three hours. What took you so long to get home?” Back home it would’ve been a shift at Deacon’s animal clinic but here ... the jury was still out on everything, including what had been taking up all of Scott’s time of late.

It had been over a year since Scott and his friends had moved to Mystic Falls while they were trying to track the demon that had taken over possession of Allison’s body and a lot had changed since then. They had managed to get Allison back, their group had grown through the additions of Danny and Riley among others, Riley had been killed during a ritual carried out by one of the first vampires the world had ever known and Scott and his friends had found out that they weren’t alone in trying to protect the town after all. In a way it was a relief to know that they had Stefan, Elena, Bonnie, Ben and other kids in town who knew the truth about the supernatural to lean on but it was also a cause for concern for Scott as it meant that they had more people to lose. It was dangerous enough living in the town as it was without having knowledge of the supernatural painting a target on your back but they were in it together and when it came to the supernatural world Scott knew firsthand that there was strength in numbers. He had tried going it alone before and he had failed miserably so he knew better than to turn away help when it presented itself. It had taken a while for his friends and the other teens in Mystic Falls to start working together properly but they had ended up getting there slowly and now he couldn’t help but feel that no matter what life threw their way next they were more prepared to deal with it. They still didn’t know how Derek had been changed from a werewolf into a shapeshifter, something that was supposed to be impossible from what Danny and Ben had told him, nor did they really know what was going on with Matt Donovan but one thing he did know was that they weren’t going to give up until they got to the bottom of it. That wasn’t particularly easy considering that they still had school to contend with and Scott had work as well but he knew that they would figure it out sooner or later. That way as soon as school had finished he had headed to work, staying there for a few hours until closing before catching up with Ben on his way home. The two had already gone their separate ways by the time Scott got home and once he was inside he headed straight up to his room only to find Stiles seemingly half asleep. “I had work,” Scott shrugged. Even though he didn’t have his job with Deaton any longer he still needed to earn some money so he had taken up a job at the vet’s practice in Mystic Falls pretty soon after moving there. The hours weren’t as flexible as they were with Deaton and he didn’t get on with his boss anywhere near as well as he had with Deaton but a job was a job and it meant that it took some of the pressure off his mom so he knew that was all that mattered. “What are you doing here Stiles?” he asked as he set his bag down on the floor and made his way over to his friend. “Is everything ok?”STILES STILINSKI

Life sure as hell hadn’t calmed down once the Winchester brothers had managed to rid Allison from the demon and Henrik had woken her up. There’d been this faint hope in the back of his mind that maybe they’d get a little breathing room in Mystic Falls but Stiles knew it had only been a pipe dream. Mystic Falls had the same sort of supernatural history as Beacon Hills. Something here drew just about every creature they’d read about in the Argent family bestiary. Hell, there was more here than that, what had happened to Derek was proof of that. The faint thread of panic had been there in practically every breath for long enough now that Stiles knew that the town was on the brink of something again. Klaus wasn’t done with his plan to build himself a little army of loyal hybrids, that threat was still hanging over Scott and Riley’s heads and honestly, who the hell knew when the Dread Doctors were going to grab someone else here and turn them into something scarier than a kitsune or a shapeshifter. Were they gonna get some sort of swamp monster crawl out of the falls to drag them all to their deaths? Or maybe some Godzilla like thing that made Jackson’s kanima form look like one of the helpless little frogs they’d had to dissect freshman year. It was the fear of that happening that had driven him to Derek’s place practically at the crack of dawn to tick the guy off and disturb his snuggle pile or whatever the hell it’d been with his mystery woman. Derek had been pretty damn sure that Scott was OK, just distracted, but heading away from Derek’s building with Alix’s name in his phone, Stiles still hadn’t been sure. Honestly, what if there was more to this than just his buddy finally moving on from the heartbreak that he’d had with Allison?
Any certainty Derek might’ve put in his head was wearing pretty damn thin by the time Scott finally got himself home. There was probably a perfectly reasonable excuse for that too – school, taking dinner to his mom at the hospital, a shift at the vet’s clinic he knew Scott had needed to start working at in town – but that little voice in the back of his mind had been whispering until his buddy had arrived to wake him up from the dozing state he’d slipped into while he’d tried to pick apart Derek’s ever-tangled love life. Another yawn hit, one big enough to have Stiles’ eyes slipping shut for a moment and his jaw cracking. ”Shoulda thought about trying to track you down here before I pulled the Sleeping Beauty act here,” he grumbled. He’d been up half the night already when he’d decided to arrive here and get it all straight from the horse’s mouth. There’d been a time when they’d have spent half their evenings together, practicing lacrosse or with him whooping Scott’s ass at Call of Duty. Times had changed though and not just in the fact that they were no longer just a duo. Stiles swiveled, dropping his feet over the side of Scott’s bed and propped his forearms on his thighs. ”I was gonna ask you the same thing,” he admitted with a half grin. ”I realized last night that we’d barely seen each other for weeks. I thought something was up with you.” Brown eyes narrowed, studying his friend’s face like he was gonna find all the answers there. Scott had always been an open book that way, his poker face sucking hugely. ”Is there something up with you?” he asked guilefully.

Scott had never been very good at keeping things from people so to say that going for so long without telling anyone that he had been spending more and more time with Bonnie was difficult would be an understatement. Scott had tried keeping things to himself before when he had gone up against the Alpha pack and it had ended up almost getting Derek killed. He knew that this was something completely different and he was still trying to figure out if there truly was something going on between him and Bonnie but he still knew that things tended to work out better when he talked it through with someone. This time something had been holding him back from doing that though, he had never been great at talking about his feelings and he and Bonnie hadn’t talked about the kiss since it had happened so he knew that chances were she wanted to forget all about it. If he was honest that was the last thing that Scott wanted but he knew that he had to respect Bonnie’s wishes in that respect. The two of them had finally managed to share the kiss that they had been deprived of four years ago but if that was all that was ever going to happen between the two of them then he knew that he needed to make his peace with that. Scott knew that things didn’t tend to go his way when it came to relationships anyway, he and Allison had broken up and she had started seeing Isaac while he had started seeing Kira but then Allison had died and Scott had realised that things with Kira just weren’t going to work and the last thing that he wanted was for anything to happen to Bonnie. She meant a lot to him and always had so if keeping her safe meant that they had to keep things strictly friendly between the two of them then he knew that he would do it. Having something else to focus on had helped Scott during the day but now as he made his way home he knew that he was going to have to find something else to keep his mind occupied for a while since his mom was working the night shift. He knew that he would take her something to eat a bit later the way that he always did but until then he knew that he needed to find something to keep him busy because when he wasn’t thinking about what was or wasn’t happening with Bonnie he was worrying about his friends. They still had no idea how Derek had been turned into a shapeshifter and Scott had heard rumours that strange things were happening to others in Mystic Falls too so he knew that he needed to figure out what was going on. Elena had come to the conclusion that there had to be a nemeton somewhere around Mystic Falls that was drawing the supernatural to it and Scott was inclined to agree with her but so far he hadn’t found anything of the sort so he was starting to wonder if perhaps it was just the luck of the draw instead. The last thing he had expected was to find Stiles asleep on his bed when he got home and he laughed as Stiles said that he should have tried looking for him there. “That might have been a good idea,” he chuckled. As Stiles said that they hadn’t seen much of each other over the last few weeks Scott knew that he was right and he couldn’t help but be reminded of the time after they’d saved Allison when they’d had exactly the same conversation only Stiles had been the one pulling away then. After that they had promised that they wouldn’t do that to each other again but here Scott was doing the same thing and he couldn’t help but feel bad about that. He knew that if there was anyone who would understand what was going on then it was Stiles but he still couldn’t bring himself to admit to his failed love life just yet. “Nothing is up with me, why would anything be?” he asked perhaps a little too quickly, in his mind doing his best to play it cool while on the outside his guilty expression probably said it all. Up until the night he’d gotten bitten in the woods Scott had been an open book. His friend hadn’t needed guile for any reason, hadn’t needed to hide any part of his life from him. And that had honestly gone both ways. Scott had known about his crush on Lydia from practically the moment he’d first felt his heart flutter at the sight of her big green eyes. Scott had been there by his side when his mom had gotten sick and Scott’s bedroom floor had been his spot all those nights when his dad had been working overnight, avoiding his grief. Practically everything Scott had ever felt or been thinking had been written across his adorably goofy face. Until that night. Peter’s bite had done more than just make his buddy go furry once a month. Stiles had never thought he’d actually say the words aloud, but at times wedges had been driven between them. Their friendship had always recovered from the blows it had received, even after Scott had made out with Lydia. Coming to Mystic Falls, trying to deal with the demon, with the Mikaelsons and the damn ritual, facing up to something that could genetically change people from who they’d been now – that had been a lot of blows but Stiles knew that none of them would be a death knell for their friendship. He’d just had to find some sort of band aid to patch up this latest little boo-boo caused by their drifting apart and Derek’s damn suspicion that Scott had just gotten himself caught up in some new romance. One that he’d entirely missed out on the signs of.
That was still galling him as he tried to get himself fully awake, that Derek might’ve noticed more about his best friend than he had. At least things were normal enough that Scott was chuckling about him not heading straight to the new vet’s office instead of to the house. If it had been Beacon Hills he wouldn’t have had a second thought about strolling into Deaton’s place but life in Mystic Falls had been off of its axis from the start. ”Note to self, check work first next time,” Stiles muttered to himself, rubbing the back of his hand across his mouth. If the two of them had spent as much time around each other as usual then Scott’s work schedule would’ve been indelibly tattooed across his brain, as it always had been. He couldn’t remember the last time the two of them had hung out though, or even just been in the same place at the same time for more than a class. One dark brow rose at Scott’s blurted response to his question. Suspicious, definitely freaking suspicious. ”Same goes, buddy. You thought there was something up with me...” His only problem had been his concern for Scott, but his friend’s problem, oh that was so much bigger if Scott’s hangdog expression was anything to go by. Stiles lifted his chin, gestured towards Scott’s pocket. ”I’ve been trying to get hold of you for a few days. Every time I’ve tried you’ve been “busy”.” Making air quotes around the word, Stiles watched Scott’s face for those little tells that would reveal that Scott was trying to wrap him up in the cotton wool of bull crap and the sort of little white lies they used on one another. ”Is your new boss that big of a slave driver? Keeping you there half the night, absolutely shameful.” Clucking his tongue, Stiles shook his head mournfully. If Scott hadn’t been so caught up maybe he’d have known about his little B and E at the antiques store by now, or about his having gone to Derek the other night. Derek might’ve been tight-lipped about his own life but it was obvious he was more than ready to gossip about everybody else’s.

Scott had learned the hard way that things never ended well when he tried to pull away from his friends and keep them safe like he had done when they were up against the Alpha Pack but this time was different. Now it wasn’t a supernatural threat that had him keeping things to himself, it was because he wasn’t sure what was going on between himself and Bonnie and he didn’t want to complicate matters any further by getting anyone else involved. Scott would be the first to admit that his life had been complete mess over the last few years and after he and Allison broke up he had tried his best to move on while she and Isaac had started seeing each other but what he’d had with Kira had quickly fizzled out and since then there had been plenty of things that were much more important than his love life for him to focus on. He had spent so much time by Allison’s bedside while she was in the coma and since then they’d had to face Klaus’ ritual and everything else that had happened in Mystic Falls over the last year so a relationship had never really been on the cards for him but now he couldn’t help but wonder if things were starting to change for the better. Klaus still hadn’t figured out how to make more hybrids so for the most part Scott and his friends were able to live their lives the way they wanted to for the time being and he knew that he wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible. There was a time when he had longed for something exciting to happen in his life but now Scott knew to take whatever moments he got to be a normal teenager and deal with normal teenage problems while they lasted. Keeping what was going on with Bonnie to himself had started four years ago for Scott when he had chosen not to tell Stiles or his mom about the incredible girl he had met during the summer that he had stayed with his dad. Back then not telling anyone had been a way of keeping the memory as something special between the two of them and as the years went on he still hadn’t been able to bring himself to share it with anyone, not even Stiles. Scott knew that perhaps he should have done after Bonnie moved back to Mystic Falls after staying with her dad following her Grams’ death but the truth was that he didn’t even know what was going on between them so it had seemed best not to complicate matters further. The two of them had kissed and they had been spending a lot more time together lately but it was only ever as friends so he knew that there really wasn’t much to tell. Even so he still felt guilty that he had been keeping things from Stiles after they had promised that they were going to be more honest with each other but the truth was that Scott didn’t know how to talk about this so instead he had stayed quiet and he had a feeling that that was going to come back and bite him now. “The difference being that then you were putting yourself in danger trying to track the demon that possessed Allison,” Scott shrugged. What was going on with him wasn’t anything like that but Stiles had no idea so Scott knew that he had to cut his friend some slack. “I’m sorry about that,” he said sincerely, rubbing the back of his neck as guilt washed over him. “My new boss is nothing like Deaton and impressing him seems impossible at times,” he admitted although he knew that that wasn’t really an excuse. “Between work and everything else I have been busy but I’ll make sure we get to hang out more,” he added, deliberately keeping what else he had been doing vague for the time being. “So what has been going on with you?” he asked, hoping to shift the focus of the attention onto Stiles if he could. Splitting hairs when it came to the sort of trouble he’d always found himself in had never worked out particularly well. Being the kid of a Sheriff Stiles honestly did know better but there was a line between knowing that he should’ve been doing something and actually doing it. Laws were rarely broken when he stepped over those strictly enforced boundaries and even those he did break were open to interpretation in his book. Picking the lock on Derek’s apartment had been for a welfare check, cause he sure as hell didn’t want to go digging a somewhat friend out of another tomb, and the antique store had been in an attempt to keep someone who obviously didn’t know what he was doing with what he had from coming to any harm. Everything else, well that was a matter of degree – even heading out into the woods on his own to try and find out where the demon Myra had slithered off to. Stiles knew that his problem was that other people’s definition of these degrees of digression didn’t always match up with his own. There was some occasional chagrin over it but for the most part he was willing to argue until his last breath about how he’d negotiated his way between them. When Scott had found out about him going solo into the woods in search of things even more dangerous than the totally psychopathic newly woken from a coma Peter, he’d not tried all that hard to squirm out of his guilt. He’d put his hands up and admitted that he shouldn’t have done, maybe only because he’d nearly died, twice. Now the shoe was on the other foot, Stiles wasn’t planning on letting Scott off too easy. If Derek was right this wasn’t a matter of life or death but still, his best friend had been keeping something from him.
Knowing Scott the guilt of it would be written all over his face in a moment anyway. Scott didn’t have a poker face, not even after all they’d been through. He didn’t always have much control of his mouth, not around his friends at least. With others Scott had understandably gotten better that way, he’d had to given that one wrong word with some would’ve had them dead. Stiles had gone into rattler mode the moment Scott had turned things around on him, suspicion leaving his gaze locked on Scott. ”Uh huh,” Stiles muttered, not giving an inch despite Scott now being a little blasé. ”For all I knew, you coulda been doing the same now. Or gone sniffing around Klaus Mikaelson to try and stop the rest of us becoming Original puppy chow.” That wasn’t exactly Scott’s style but the point remained the same. He hadn’t known what Scott was up to. Propping his elbows on his knees, Stiles dragged his teeth over his lower lip. He managed a shrug as Scott obviously got a case of the guilts. ”No biggie,” he finally admitted, knowing he couldn’t push the guilt thing too far. Stiles let out a faint snort. ”Sorry to burst your bubble but you’re never gonna get a boss like Deaton again.” It hadn’t seemed it at times but they’d been seriously lucky to have Deaton around. More lives had been saved in the vet’s office than at the hospital. Stiles made a low sound in his throat at Scott’s promise before he scooted back on Scott’s bed, reaching for his laptop. ”We better,” he warned. ”You’re missing out on all the fun while you work your fingers to the bone. Someone’s got a new romance going on…” He let the words hang in the air, knowing that if Scott wasn’t careful it would honestly be enough rope for his buddy to hang himself with.

Scott had never been very good at lying, it was something he had always struggled with and it always seemed to get him in trouble sooner or later. Stiles was his best friend and they were both able to read each other like an open book at times but what was going on with Bonnie was something that Scott had wanted to keep to himself until he knew for sure whether there was something more going on between them or whether it was all in his head as deep down he wouldn’t be surprised if it was the latter. He had never told anyone about the day they had spent together at the funfair during the summer they met when they were fourteen, that was one of the few secrets about himself that Scott had managed to successfully keep and he knew that he had done so because talking about it out loud would have meant admitting that it was over and that it was likely that he was never going to see Bonnie again and even now years later he still wasn’t ready to let anyone know about that summer. He had recognised Bonnie the moment he had seen her again but it was the wolf necklace he had won for her that she was wearing the day he saw her at Mystic Falls High that had really made it sink in that it actually was her and they’d told their friends that they’d met before but they hadn’t given any more detail than that. Now he was pretty sure that Stiles knew that he was lying about something but his friend had yet to call him out on it so Scott knew that for the time being at least he was safe. “If I thought it would help then I might have gone to Klaus but we both know it wouldn’t make a difference,” Scott shrugged. There really wasn’t anything that he wouldn’t do in order to protect his friends and Stiles knew that. For such a long time it had just been the two of them and it hadn’t been easy letting others in at first but now they had so many more people around them that they both cared about and Scott knew that the last thing he wanted was for anything to happen to any of them. They had already lost Allison and Riley once and Scott knew that the last thing any of them wanted was to end up losing anyone else so whatever he could do to stop that happening he knew that he would do in an instant. “I made you promise not to do anything reckless without telling me first and I’ll do the same. Is that better?” he asked, knowing that trust really was a two way street. “You’re telling me,” Scott chuckled as Stiles said that he was never going to get a boss like Deaton again. “At this rate I’ll be lucky if he doesn’t fire me before graduation.” Scott knew that he couldn’t afford to let that happen since he needed the money to help his mom out with the bills and so that he had some money in his pocket as well but his boss was so difficult to please that in a way he was almost waiting for the day when he turned around and said that he didn’t need anyone else’s help at the clinic after all. As Stiles said that someone had a new romance going on, Scott’s cheeks flushed red a little but he did his best to ignore it. “Really? Who?”STILES STILINSKI

When it had come to people like the Alpha pack and newly non-comatose Peter the idea of negotiation had been bat crap crazy. None of them would’ve listened. With Deucalion and his Alphas Derek had kinda tried but look how that had ended up? Scott had nearly died again, Erica had died, Boyd too and because they’d opened up some door in their minds to deal with that problem, the nogitsune had been able to make its way in. All of that because they’d tried to do things the right way. Stiles doubted it would work much better with Niklaus Mikaelson. Not unless his brothers were the ones doing the negotiations and even then it wasn’t likely to be a huge success. They had trouble on so many fronts right now, threats lining up behind Klaus like he was just going to be the first wave. In comparison Derek’s little girlfriend problem had almost felt easy. Stiles had been able to hear all of the others’ voices in his head, lecturing him as he’d sat in his bedroom afterwards, looking at the name Derek had inputted into his phone. Derek’s was right there alongside them, echoing around, threatening him, but that was easy to push aside. Derek had caved in the hallway outside of his apartment, his suspicious obviously rubbing off on the wolf. They were right, it wasn’t paranoia when there really were people out to get you. Maybe Alix Quinn wasn’t on that list but Klaus Mikaelson sure as hell would.
Stiles grunted in answer to his friend, his shoulders slumping as he thought about it. Klaus was even stronger than he had been and as a Mikaelson that meant he was pretty freaking indestructible. Picking an argument with him now or just giving him a reason to paint targets on their backs was suicidal. ”I know,” he admitted in the end, his voice weary. Stiles lifted his hands, ground the heels of them into his eyes for a moment. ”I know you better than to think you really would’ve tried it too.” That hadn’t been the real reason the two of them hadn’t seen all that much of each other. If Derek was right, that reason was Bonnie and his reason was … well … he was still poking around, just not in the way he had done at first. Stiles’ mouth quirked up at the corners. He held out a hand, pinky outstretched to swear on it. ”Better,” he promised. Dark brows drew together a moment. ”Are they that bad?” he asked. Thinking about it, Stiles blew a raspberry. ”They’ve had a look at that adorable face, they’re not gonna fire you.” Maybe Scott would screw up a time or two but there was nobody who’d work harder, who’d try harder with the animals. Sprawled back on Scott’s bed with his laptop in his lap Stiles paused. ”You’re blushing,” he accused. ”I was gonna say Derek but by the looks of things you’ve got something to spill…” Narrowing his eyes Stiles let the accusation hang in the air. Had Derek been right?

It was normally Stiles who kept things from him rather than the other way around but lately Scott had been spending a lot of time with Bonnie and he had been keeping it to himself. He knew that Stiles wouldn’t judge him for it, after all he often spent a lot of time with Lydia these days, but Scott preferred to keep his relationships private. The truth was he didn’t even know what was going on with Bonnie right now anyway, all he knew was that he’d had feelings for her ever since the summer they met. He had tried to put them behind him since he had felt certain that he would never got to see her again but they had been brought together in Mystic Falls the same way that Danny and Riley had. They had been spending plenty of time together lately but he still wasn’t sure whether Bonnie just saw him as a friend or something more and a lot of his time lately had been spent trying to figure that out. He knew that he would have to find a way to be ok with just being her friend if it really was one sided but he wasn’t ready to let go of that hope just yet. Between school, work and hanging out with her there hadn’t really been much time for anything else and Scott felt a little guilty about that to say the least. He hadn’t liked it when Stiles had pushed him away while he was trying to track down the demon that had possessed Allison and now Scott had inadvertently been pushing his best friend away. It was something that he knew he needed to put a stop to and he also knew that he was going to have to find a way to make it up to Stiles for being a bad friend. They had other people around them now but for such a long time it had been just the two of them and he knew better than to let their friendship suffer. There was so much going on at the moment and Scott knew that they needed to work together if they were going to stand a chance at getting through it the same way that they always had done. There had been too many close calls lately and Scott refused to lose anyone else. Klaus was always going to be a threat and there were times when Scott had wondered if it would be safer for all of them if they left Mystic Falls but they had never run away from trouble before and he knew that they weren’t going to start now. When he and his mom moved to Mystic Falls it had been on the understanding that they would stay there until graduation at the very least but it was more than that now, they all had other friends in the town and Scott had Bonnie as well so they had so much more to lose and that wasn’t an option as far as he was concerned. “If it meant keeping you guys safe, I would,” Scott corrected. That was why he had tried to fight the Alpha pack on his own after all, he would do just about anything to keep the people he loved safe even if that meant sacrificing himself but this time he knew that it really wouldn’t do any good. “Deal,” Scott said, reaching out and pinky swearing on it. Stiles had made that same promise to him and he had been keeping up his end of the deal so Scott knew that it was only fair that he did too. “You’re kidding me, right?” he asked, an eyebrow raised as he looked over at his friend. “My boss is a complete control freak and if things aren’t done a certain way then he flips out. I’m just waiting for the day he turns around and decides he’ll do everything himself.” It wasn’t pleasant at all but he knew that he just had to hang in there and keep working as much as he could. Not only did he need the money but he needed the experience as well so he knew better than to give in. “No I haven’t,” he said, perhaps a little too quickly. “Who is Derek seeing?” he asked, eager to pass the attention onto just about anyone but himself. There’d been a general level of suckiness to things before Peter had gone trying to make himself a pack but compared to what had come afterwards, it had been seriously low level. Ever since that night it had felt like they were caught in a monstrous tug of war with the thing on the other side winning most of the time. Feet sliding, bodies aching, hands shredding, metaphorically only some of the time, they carried on fighting against it. Maybe sometimes they gained some ground and got a little bit of piece, the rest of the time it felt like a losing battle. Lately it had been like they were catching their combined breaths again but Stiles knew it wasn’t gonna last. It never did these days. They were constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop again … like something was gonna come along and snatch Derek away again or some new evil ninja demon-slash-werewolf-slash-darach-slash-crazy ass ancient vampire who wanted to go full hybrid was gonna turn back up. That much anticipation was bound to screw with your head and it did .. if his sleep pattern was anything to go by but you couldn’t just bury your head in the sand and trust that everything was going to turn out OK for once. Stiles knew that was what their parents would’’ve preferred they did but with the truth floating around in his head continually how in the hell were you meant to do that? You weren’t. It was the crappy way things were. You handled what you could and you faced the rest with your head held high and your friends at your back at least.
Derek might not’ve liked it and Scott might not’ve thought about it lately but that was the way things went. Snatching up one of the pillows on the bed as Scott admitted he would’ve done something stupid to keep them all safe, Stiles lobbed it at his friend. ”We’d have kicked your ass for it afterwards,” he warned, a wry twist to his mouth. ”No going and doing stupid stuff on your own. That’s the one rule to rule them all, man.” It was a travesty to twist Tolkien that way but it was the truth and he’d learned it the hard way. The knot in his gut eased a little as Scott pinky swore on it at least. They had to stick together, even here. Thick and thin, sickness and in health. All those things they got you to promise when you got married. It wasn’t just when you put on a ring on it though. As a brother, you did it too, as a pack you did it. Friendship rules meant he instantly thought of Scott’s boss as an asshole now. Stiles shrugged, settled back against Scott’s bed with his fingers tapping lightly on the closed lid of it. ”If he does that then he’s an idiot,” Stiles drawled. ”You’re’ like the best assistant out there. We need to track Deaton down, convince him to get his ass over to this coast and sort this guy out.” It wasn’t as though there was a half dozen vet clinics in town for Scott to pick between. They were close to graduation now though, another step up for them all. Not that there wasn’t likely more nightmares standing between them and that day but for now … it felt good to pick the idea aside and take a jab at Scott as he started to blush. Stiles set the laptop, sitting up to stare at his friend. ”You’re the worst liar,” he snorted. ”There was some mysterious red head in his bed when I broke in but that fact’s not gonna get you off the hook. What’s with the blushing?” Stiles flicked a finger up towards his own face in indication. He’d always known Scott better than almost anybody else but he didn’t need that connection to see that something was going on here.

Finding Stiles in the house when he got home wasn’t something that Scott had expected but he realised now that he had been neglecting his best friend. It wasn’t intentional at all but he had been spending as much time with Bonnie as he could when he wasn’t studying or working and other things seemed to have fallen by the wayside somewhat. It was scary to think that soon enough they would all be graduating and moving on to college and Scott would be lying if he said that he wasn’t worried they might all end up going their separate ways when that happened but he knew that he just had to trust that they would figure something out. They still had time left together anyway so he knew that there wasn’t too much point in worrying about it just yet when they had other things they needed to focus on. Scott had thought that Beacon Hills was bad for always having one thing going on after another but the truth was that it didn’t even come close to what things were like in Mystic Falls. Just when they seemed to finish dealing with one thing another three seemed to hit them at once and it was a challenge to say the least. Thankfully they weren’t alone in dealing with any of it this time though, the pack had grown but they had more friends around them outside of that as well. They’d had people like that back in Beacon Hills as well but not as many as they had now and Scott couldn’t deny that he felt better knowing that there were others around that they could count on when they needed them. The ritual that Klaus performed had been awful but some good had come of it at least since it had brought his friends and Elena’s even closer together and no matter what seemed to come their way now they always faced it head on together. Catching the pillow that Stiles threw his way, a wry smile formed on Scott’s face as he looked over at his best friend. “You could have tried,” he corrected. He had never been much of a fighter before but since becoming a werewolf he’d had no choice but to learn and now he knew that he could more than hold his own when he had to. “Funny, it wasn’t that long ago that I was telling you the same thing,” Scott reminded him. Stiles had tried going it alone after they managed to get Allison back but he had gotten better at letting them all in after Scott had warned him not to try and do things on his own again so he knew that he needed to show his friend the same courtesy. As Stiles spoke again, Scott couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t tempt me. I’d give anything to have Deaton back as my boss right now,” he admitted. It wasn’t just because he was a great teacher, it was also because he was a friend. Scott respected the decision that he had made to stay in Beacon Hills though and they had Danny to help out with the druid stuff it just wasn’t quite the same as having his old mentor around. “Who was the red head?” Scott asked, hoping to distract Stiles although he quickly realised that it wasn’t going to work. “Nothing, I just don’t like being put on the spot,” he lied, hoping that his friend wouldn’t press him any further although knowing Stiles he wasn’t going to give up that easily. “Maybe I should start grilling you about what’s going on between you and Lydia.”STILES STILINSKI

It had probably only been a couple of times but it felt like they’d been here like this fifty times over in the last couple of years. One of them bruised and battered, half dead, some bad guy chuckling away behind the scenes because it knew it had all of them on the ropes. Stiles glanced down at his hands, flexing them slightly as he thought about it. He’d been the one doing it at one point, something else had been control of his hands and most of the time he’d been lost inside of his own head, caught up in an endless game of Go except for when the nogitsune had wanted to feast on the fear it could make bubble up inside of him. The feel of his own hands on the sword he’d run right through Scott, the sounds of his friends grieving when his oni had done the same with Allison. It had all haunted his dreams for months afterwards, the fear that any skirmish was gonna put them right back there with his friends’ lives hanging in the balance. Maybe they’d been hoping sticking around Mystic Falls would mean a little less of that darkness periodically eclipsing their lives. Fat freaking chance. There were just as many threats here as there had been there. They’d faced as many of them together as they could but a group hug wasn’t a magic wand. Stiles knew that going off half-cocked just made it worse though, even if Scott was the one trying to play lone wolf here.
Stiles scowled at his friend as Scott caught the cushion he’d thrown at him. He lifted a finger, aiming it at Scott in warning. He wasn’t kidding, he’d seen how bad the town could get. ”Oh I’m still capable of doing that,” he warned, narrowing his eyes. ”Or rather your mom is. I bet she can still talk you into anything.” Melissa definitely managed it in a way his dad envied. Way too many times the warnings his dad had given him had gone in one ear and out the other. Stiles scowled at his best friend for a moment and then flapped a hand at himself. ”And I listened didn’t I? Your turn now, man.” Although in Mystic Falls that was always going to be far easier said than done. Especially when the normal human population could be just as bad as the supernatural one. Raising his brows slightly, Stiles aimed a dubious look at Scott. ”Have you heard anything from him since we left?” he asked, getting a little too serious for his own liking. He hadn’t liked leaving anybody behind in Beacon Hills but it wasn’t like they’d just been able to pack everybody up wholesale and run right after Allison. Danny had really stepped up on the whole druid thing but Deaton had been more than that, more than just Scott’s boss. He didn’t need Deaton’s help to see the embarrassment spreading over Scott’s face. ”You’re not gonna get away with changing the subject,” Stiles warned. He blew out a breath, gesturing back in the direction of Derek’s apartment before he hunched over with his elbows on his knees. ”Other than Derek’s current girlfriend … woman of the week … bed mate? I don’t know yet.” He had a start with the name Derek had given him though. His eyes were on Scott for now though, narrowing to dark slits. ”Pants are on fire,” he crooned. Stiles gave a shrug, trying for nonchalant. ”We’re friends, like we’ve been for ages now. You spend time with friends.” You didn’t kiss when they were on the brink of melting down from a lack of sleep though.

Scott knew that he hadn’t been a very good friend lately, he had been spending a lot of time with Bonnie and not as much time with the other people that he cared about and he couldn’t deny that he felt guilty about that. He didn’t even know what was going on with Bonnie right now, all he knew was that he’d had a crush on her for a long time and it seemed to be growing as they spent more time together. There was still no excuse for not being around as much for everyone else, though, and Stiles breaking into his house was enough to remind him of that. Scott had been through so much with his friends and he had learned the hard way that trying to go it alone just didn’t work. He was much stronger with the others around him and he knew that the same was true of them all. No matter what life threw their way they figured it out together and he had promised himself after Allison died that he wasn’t going to take them for granted again but he knew that he had perhaps been doing exactly that lately, albeit pretty unintentionally. Scott knew that he was going to have to find a way to make it up to them and he knew that there was no better place to start than with Stiles now that he was here. School, lacrosse and work had a habit of keeping Scott busy but in the past he had always found a way to make time for his friends as well and he knew that he needed to get back to that. As Stiles said that he could talk to his mom and that she would be able to get him to do something, Scott rolled his eyes. “That’s a low blow, man,” he grumbled. Stiles knew how close Scott and his mom were and after everything that had happened the teenager didn’t want to do anything to upset her. They’d only had each other after his dad left and they had learned how to get by on their own. They had become a pretty good team and Scott already felt guilty enough about dragging her into the supernatural world right along with him so he knew that Stiles was right and she would likely be able to talk him into doing whatever it was that Stiles wanted him to do as long as she agreed with it. “You listened for now, there’s nothing to say you’ll keep it up,” Scott shrugged. He knew Stiles too well and if there was something that needed to be looked into then the guy’s first instinct would still be to look into it on his own and that was something that none of them wanted for him. It didn’t make any difference that Stiles was human, it would be too easy for him or any of them to end up getting into trouble if they tried looking into something on their own and as far as Scott was concerned it just wasn’t worth the risk. He had distanced himself from his friends before when he thought that doing so would protect them and it had never worked out that way so he knew how important it was to remember that they were all a team and they could lean on each other. As Stiles asked about Deaton, Scott shook his head. “I heard from him a bit in the beginning but after Danny joined us here it’s like Deaton went off the grid. Maybe he thought we could do this without him,” he shrugged. Either that or something could have happened to him but the truth was that Scott didn’t even want to consider the latter. Scott stayed quiet as Stiles said that he wasn’t going to get away with changing the subject. He wasn’t ready to talk to anyone about Bonnie yet so he hoped that he would be able to keep Stiles distracted for long enough that he might forget. As Stiles said that he didn’t know who Derek was seeing yet, Scott let out a groan. “Why do I get the feeling you’re not going to stop until you figure it out?” he asked, knowing that it would no doubt annoy Derek and understandably so if Stiles didn’t drop it. Rolling his eyes at Stiles’ next words, Scott still said nothing and was relieved when he managed to shift the subject to Stiles and Lydia. “Stiles, this is me you’re talking to. I know you’ve had a crush on Lydia since the third grade.”STILES STILINSKI

With his mom gone and his dad throwing himself in equal measures at the job and the bottle, Scott’s family had practically become his own. Nights spent scrambling up the side of the house and into Scott’s room, innocence written all over his face when Melissa would find him there an hour later. Dinners spent at their table, homework down sprawled on Scott’s bed or floor, abandoned when they both got tired of it and ended up in some sort of war on Scott’s game console. Hollers filling the house as they won or lost together, always the two of them against everybody else rather than them at odds. It had slipped a little since, their group of friends spreading far enough as they’d grown up and Peter’s bite had pushed them out of the rut they’d been in into this whole other freaking crazy world. Still, when it came down to it Stiles knew if he needed that he cold still come back here. Melissa would take him in like her own, like she’d done with both Isaac and Malia. Some things changed beyond recognition, other things were still amazingly the same.
Stiles acted innocent over it now, knowing that if he did need to make sure Scott kept his ass on the couch here to heal all he needed to do was have a word with Melissa. Her riot act could be roasting, her guilt trip a fall off a family cliff. If he thought Scott needed it he wouldn’t hesitate. He shot him an innocent look for now though, lashes fluttering, lips pursing in that little smile. ”Hey, that’s a sign you’re doing OK, low blow but you took it like a champ.” He winked, that smile growing. It fell away as Scott aimed one back at him. Stiles growled, resisting the urge to slug Scott in the shoulder when he knew he couldn’t take it. ”I always listen man,” he sulked. The problem was whether or not he wanted to actually do what he was being told or take the advice given.
At the end of the day there was no way he would just walk away from this. Sticking proverbial fingers in his ears and pretending he wasn’t seeing and hearing everything he was. He might’ve been one of the only humans in the pack but it didn’t mean he was entirely powerless. He was one hell of an investigator, when he didn’t just rush right ahead into stuff. Maybe if Deaton had been here it would’ve been a little easier, some support and training for Danny, someone who knew what the hell they were looking at. Stiles frowned, his lower lip disappearing between his teeth as he started to chew. ”He doesn’t seem like he was the sort to just bug out. You think those things got him too?” They’d gotten Derek from Beacon Hills, had twisted him up, changed him into something else and dumped him here for them to find. Who knew if Deaton was stuck in a similar way, trapped out in the woods somewhere they hadn’t found yet.
Maybe it would’ve been less awkward if they’d kept on worrying about what had happened to Deaton but Scott had changed the subject and now Stiles was pretty sure he was gonna go up like freaking Johnny Storm. It was easier while it was Derek’s love life he was poking into than the spotlight being shone on him. Stiles snorted, his smile flashing for an instant as he glanced sideways at Scott. ”Because you know me?” he suggested. This was for Derek’s own good, as well as the rest of theirs. If Alix was actually helping Derek out then good, that was one more person on their side. And maybe Derek preoccupied enough that he wouldn’t return the digging favour, unlike Scott here. He flapped his hands, teeth sunk into his lips again. ”An unrequited crush, remember? I didn’t exist for Lydia until you got bit and suddenly you were right there on the radar.” Things had shifted since then though, slowly, subtly. ”I kissed her,” he suddenly managed. The words were quiet, kinda stuck in his throat. ”She came over one night, hadn’t slept properly in weeks, she was crying and … I kissed her.” It had stopped the tears in their tracks and suddenly that awareness had sprung back up between them with a snap.
