Henrik knew that he needed to stop stalling. Since finding out that his siblings were alive he had reconnected with Elijah, he had undaggered Rebekah and soon he had plans to undagger Kol but so far he had yet to reach out to Nik. It wasn’t through lack of wanting to, when they were growing up the two of them had always been close but it was Nik that he had talked into going with him to see the men turn into wolves the night he died and he knew from Elijah that it had been Nik that had carried his body back to their family. Henrik had never wanted that to happen, it had been an innocent enough request from a child who hadn’t known any better but it had caused his family so much pain and heartache and that was something that he still blamed himself for. It was because of that one decision that Elijah had lost the chance to have a normal life with Tatia, Rebekah had lost the chance to get married and have children of her own, Kol had lost the chance to learn magic and Finn had lost the chance to do whatever he’d wanted to do but it was Nik who had ended up paying the worst price of all. Their mother’s indiscretion that had led to Nik being conceived had only come to light after his siblings had been turned into vampires and Nik had spent a thousand years after that with a part of himself locked away. The truth was that Henrik couldn’t even begin to imagine what that must have been like for his brother and he wouldn’t blame Nik if he hated him for it but he hadn’t felt ready to find out. In the beginning there had always been an excuse. First it had been the ritual because he hadn’t wanted his brother to figure out that he was planning on bringing back all of the sacrifices and then Nik had left to go travelling with Stefan and find a way to create more hybrids. Now his brother was back in town and he had no such excuse but he still hadn’t reached out and Henrik knew that it was long past due that he did. He had never been a coward, Mikael never would have let any one of his children get accused of being called that, but facing up to what he had put Nik through had still proved to be much easier said than done. Now, however, Henrik had someone else to think about. He had promised Davina that he would help her gain control of her powers and he knew that in order to do that he needed to be able to teach her in a place she felt safe and he couldn’t do that without Nik knowing that he was alive. Facing his brother was something that Henrik knew that he was going to have to do sooner rather than later but as he pulled his phone out of his pocket it was another name that showed on the screen and he couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face. “Hey Bek, are you ok?” he asked, pleased that she had called but a little surprised nonetheless. Straight away he could tell that there was something strange going on, the tone of her voice was different and she didn’t seem to want to give much away but she wanted to meet and Henrik knew that there was no way he was going to say no so it wasn’t long before he had agreed to meet her at the Grill in twenty minutes. Grabbing his keys, phone and wallet after finishing up what he had been working on, Henrik left the apartment that he and Nik shared and made his way to the Grill. Pushing the door open his gaze immediately swept over the faces of the patrons as he searched for his sister but instead of spotting her he was met by another face that he knew just as well and his breath caught in his throat as he looked at his brother for the first time in a thousand years. He knew that there was a chance that Nik might not recognise him so he might be able to slip straight back out again but he had known that he needed to face his brother so as far as he was concerned there was no time like the present. “I knew Rebekah didn’t sound like herself,” he admitted as he made his way over to his brother. “It’s good to see you again Nik,” he added, a genuine smile forming on his face as he looked over at him. For a long time Henrik had wanted to reach out to his older brother and fill him in on everything that had happened over the last few years but the truth was that he hadn’t known how Nik would act. There was a time when the two of them had been so close that he had been the only one that Henrik had wanted to join him when he’d gone to see the men turn into wolves and Henrik would have done anything for his brother. That hadn’t changed, at least he hadn’t in him, but he knew that Nik had. Elijah had tried to tell him what had happened to their brother and he’d heard rumours during his time in Mystic Falls but Henrik refused to give up the hope that the Nik he had grown up with was still in there somewhere and he couldn’t help but feel guilty about what his brother had been through since the night he’d died. Henrik knew that had he not convinced Nik to go with him, had he just stayed home like he had every other night of the full moon, then none of this would have happened. His siblings wouldn’t have been turned into vampires, Nik wouldn’t have had his werewolf side locked away, Elijah wouldn’t have lost Tatia, Kol wouldn’t have had his connection to magic severed and Rebekah wouldn’t have lost the chance to start a family of her own one day. Not a day went by when he didn’t feel bad about all of that despite Olivia’s assurances that he shouldn’t blame himself. A part of him knew that she was right, after all he was just a foolish child back then, but it had still been his decision to go and he had to live with that every day. That was why he hadn’t stopped his brother from completing the ritual to free his werewolf side. Henrik knew that he could have but instead he had stood by and let it happen only to step in afterwards and bring all those that his brother had sacrificed back to life. Even though he had known that he hadn’t wanted to stop the ritual from taking place and right one of the many wrongs that had happened since the night he died, he had known that it shouldn’t come at the expense of innocent lives so he had seen bringing them back as another way to right a wrong. Henrik hadn’t kept tabs on Nik after he left town with Stefan but he had started undaggering their siblings and each had been sworn to secrecy until he felt that the time was right to tell Nik that he was back but he had taken that into his own hands and deep down Henrik knew that he shouldn’t be so surprised, he only regretted that Rebekah had been caught in the middle of it. “Yes, I would have,” Henrik said honestly. Nik was the one that had been put through the most after he died so facing him was always going to have been the hardest out of all of his siblings but Henrik knew that he wouldn’t have turned down his brother’s request to meet if he had been the one to ask. Ordering himself a whiskey from the bartender, Henrik lifted the glass to his lips and took a sip as Nik spoke again before lowering it slowly. “I did want to see you, I wanted to tell you that I’m back, but I wasn’t sure how to face you knowing everything that you have been through because of me,” he said at last, brutal honesty in his words as he spoke. Nik had been one of his idols while he was growing up, Henrik had always looked up to his older brother and he hated what had happened after he died but no amount of regret was going to let him go back and change it now. As Nik asked why he was undaggering their siblings, a laugh escaped Henrik’s lips. “That’s the first thing you decide to ask me?” he asked, unable to hide his surprise as he looked over at his brother. “We haven’t seen each other for a thousand years and all you want to know is why I’m freeing our siblings from the boxes you decided to put them in?”NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

The reunion with Nik was the one that, in a way, Henrik had been dreading the most. Elijah had lost Tatia, Kol had lost his connection to magic and Rebekah had lost the chance to have a family of her own one day but Nik was the one who had lived for a thousand years with a part of himself locked away. That was something that Henrik had never wanted to happen but after his family became vampires their mother’s affair had come to light and Nik had been left to pay the price for it. It was strange to think that everything that had happened had come about from one decision to go and watch the men turn into wolves during the full moon that had been made by a child that hadn’t known any better but ever since Crowley brought him back Henrik had been trying to atone for that. He knew that he never could have been expected to know what would happen to the people he loved but that still didn’t help ease the guilt that he felt at all so he had been doing his best to make up for that ever since. He knew that he should have reached out to Nik before and he had wanted to do so but the truth was that he had been scared. He wasn’t afraid of the man that his brother had become, instead he was afraid of facing the brother that had seen him die and taken his body back to their village. He knew that he never should have put Nik in that position but he couldn’t take that back now no matter how much he might want to so instead all he could do was try and make things right now. “You honestly think I didn’t know what was going to happen during the ritual?” Henrik asked, an eyebrow raised as he looked over at his brother. “You can think I didn’t help if you want to but who do you think helped Kaitlyn figure out how to perform the ritual in the first place and who do you think convinced her to return to help you after you killed her brother?” he asked as he took a sip of his drink. “I helped more than you know and the only reason why I didn’t tell you I was back then was because I knew that you would try and stop me from bringing the people you planned on sacrificing back.” That had never been a part of Henrik’s plan, he had known that Nik had needed to break the curse their mother had placed on him and he knew that the only way to do that was with three sacrifices but he had never planned on letting those people stay dead for long. “I’m not ashamed of the fact that I brought them all back, I could have stopped the ritual from going ahead but I didn’t because I knew that a part of you had been locked away for a thousand years and I didn’t want you to have to carry that pain around with you any longer,” he continued, not flinching as Nik slammed the glass down on the counter. “As for our family, I didn’t realise I needed you permission to free them from their prisons,” he said as he took another sip of his drink. “They’re our brothers and sister Nik, not children. You might not think the world is safe for them but I don’t think that is your decision to make. They deserve the chance to live their lives just as much as you do.” That was something that they all deserved and even if Nik didn’t agree then he was still determined to free their siblings from their coffins. “After I came back I spent years thinking all of you were dead. I just want our family back together and I think at least a part of you does too.”NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

Henrik had wanted to reach out to Nik before, he had been the one that had gone with Henrik when he had wanted to watch the men turn into wolves and he knew that Nik would have been the most affected by it all. He didn’t doubt that his brother would have felt guilty about what had happened but Henrik knew that even if Nik hadn’t gone with him then he would have gone on his own anyway. He was only thirteen when he died but he was a stubborn kid back then and he knew that no one would have been able to talk him out of it anyway. He had grown up hearing the howls of the wolves every full moon when the men turned and he had heard all about the dangers they posed when they were in their wolf forms but it had seemed like such an incredible story to the young boy that he had needed to see it for himself in order to truly believe it. He hadn’t meant for any of this to happen, he hadn’t wanted the lives of his siblings to be turned upside down the way they had been and he definitely hadn’t wanted the ripple effect of death and destruction that had been going on ever since to start but it was too late to take any of that back now. The weight of that decision and everything that had happened since was something that Henrik carried around with him every day. He was doing his best to atone for that in any way that he could but it was going to take time and he had already accepted the fact that he might never be able to make up for any of it although that didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to try. It had been a risk to let the others die in the ritual but he had known that it was necessary in order to free the side of Niklaus that had been locked away for so long and he hadn’t wanted his brother to go through that any longer. “It doesn’t have to be that way. There doesn’t have to be any more bloodshed or death,” Henrik disagreed. He wasn’t sure whether that was even possible for his family but he wanted to believe that it could be. There had been so much of that already, far too much in fact, and he knew that it needed to stop but locking their siblings away wasn’t the answer and he hoped that in time Nik would see that. Nik’s next words were enough to surprise Henrik, he hadn’t for one moment thought that Nik would have let him bring those he had sacrificed in the ritual back but it looked like perhaps he had been wrong about that after all. “If I’d known then I would have told you about my plan Nik. I had hoped there would be another way to break mother’s curse but the only way was the one you found and you seemed like you wanted to do it on your own so I didn’t want to interfere.” The truth was he hadn’t known how Nik would react when he learned that he was back, Elijah had filled him in on some of the things that had happened during the thousand years that had followed his death and Henrik knew that something in Nik had changed. Family still meant the world to him but Henrik still felt like he was responsible for his siblings becoming vampires and Nik’s werewolf side being locked away so he had needed his brother’s ritual to succeed the way he had planned without him getting involved in it. It had seemed like the right thing to do at the time but now he wasn’t so sure. “I think my actions undaggering them were much more justified than your actions locking them away,” Henrik countered. He knew that Nik had done what he’d thought was right and they were all guilty of doing that at times but to take the chance away from their siblings to be able to live their lives was never going to be justifiable in Henrik’s eyes. As his brother spoke again it was Henrik’s turn to laugh. “You said it yourself Nik. You wanted to keep them safe but you can’t stop them from living their lives.” No one should have the right to do that and he knew that he was doing the right thing by freeing them. Nik’s words that he had daggered their siblings because the world was never safe from them and that they were damaged beyond repair were enough to make Henrik fall silent and he lifted his glass to his lips to take a sip. “I don’t believe that,” he said at last. “I don’t think any of you are damaged beyond repair. Our family might be fractured and things might be tense right now but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be fixed. I’m not giving up on any of you,” he said confidently. He refused to give up on his family and he hoped that Nik wouldn’t either. “There are a lot of people here who know about the supernatural world, perhaps this is a place where we can all start over.” Whether or not that was possible he wasn’t sure but he still hoped that it would be. As Nik agreed that he wanted their family back together, Henrik felt a smile work its way across his face. “It won’t be easy but we can do this together.”NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

When Henrik was first brought back and learned that it had been a thousand years since he had died he had honestly never thought that his siblings would still be alive. Crowley had kept that from him but Henrik still found out the truth pretty quickly after arriving in Mystic Falls. Vampires weren’t something that he had come across before but he had learned about them pretty quickly and Elijah had helped fill him in on what had become of their family. Henrik had never wanted any of them to go through what they had because of him, it had been childish curiosity that had made him want to go and watch the men turn into wolves one night and it had ended up costing his siblings the chance to have normal lives. So much had happened since then and so many lives had been lost or changed forever but still his family remained. From the moment he had learned about the ritual that Nik had been intent performing he had known that there was no way that he was going to stop it. His brother had lived with a part of himself locked away for over a thousand years and Henrik had known that there was no way that he was going to even try and stand in his brother’s way. Even though he hadn’t wanted to stop Nik he had known that he wasn’t going to let any of the sacrifices stay dead for long and he stood by his choice to bring them back. Nik’s words were enough to bring a smile to Henrik’s lips and he pretended to think for a moment. “Perhaps but I’m still a Mikaelson through and through,” he chuckled. He knew that he was different to his family now but it wasn’t always that way. His siblings had all changed over the thousand years that had passed since he’d died but in each of them he still saw the same siblings that he had grown up with every now and then. They had become what they were now because of a decision that he had made and he knew that he was always going to regret that but now he had the chance to at least try and make things right with each of them and he wanted to make sure that things were different from now on. As Nik called him innocent and naive, Henrik studied his brother carefully for a moment. “How’s that?” he asked, genuinely curious as to what was going through Nik’s mind right now. He honestly had thought that his brother wanted to break the curse on his own since none of their siblings had helped but now he was starting to wonder if perhaps he was wrong about that after all. All Henrik could do was listen as Nik explained his actions and he found himself studying his brother once more. He could see that Nik believed his words to be true and Henrik was saddened by the fact that he felt that way. He knew that his brother had had it the worst out of all of them when it came to the abuse from their father but Henrik had never thought that he would end up becoming so cynical. Nik deserved better and, as far as Henrik was concerned, so did their siblings. “How do you know they can’t stand on their own two feet if you aren’t prepared to give them the chance?” he asked, knowing that there had to be something more to it. “They might have made mistakes but surely they deserve the chance to learn from them just like we all do,” he added, hoping that his brother would see that what he was saying was true. “I don’t believe you’re a monster Nik. Anyone can see that you love our family and you did what you did to try and protect them but if you give them a chance they might surprise you.” Henrik had no way of knowing for sure what was going to happen but he believed in his siblings and that was never going to change. As Nik spoke again, Henrik felt his smile return. “You know me Nik, I’ve always had faith in all of you and that hasn’t changed.” They had all done their best to protect him from their father while they were growing up but he still hadn’t been blind to what was going on. He had known what their father was capable of and he had also seen the lengths that his siblings would go to in order to protect each other and to protect him. They were family and that was something that Henrik knew that he was never going to give up on. His siblings might have changed over the last thousand years but they were still his siblings and nothing was going to change the way he felt about them. “I’m glad you’re sticking around,” he said sincerely. He didn’t know much about what had gone on in New Orleans but Mystic Falls was home to Henrik and he wanted to have all of his family around him if he could. “It will, just give it time,” he nodded, hoping that his words were right. Henrik had wanted to reach out to his brother ever since he’d found out that his siblings were alive but after everything that had happened to Nik after his death because of his desire to go and watch the men turn into wolves the truth was that Henrik had been ashamed. Elijah didn’t seem to hold a grudge against him but with Nik it was different. He knew just how difficult things had been for his older brother and Nik had been forced to live for a thousand years with a part of himself locked away and that was something that Henrik never would have wanted for him. He wasn’t sure how Nik would ever be able to forgive him for that but in the end family was family and Henrik had realised that he couldn’t stay away. He and Nik had always been close and Henrik knew that he wanted them to get back to being that way again regardless of how much things might have changed for both of them but whether or not it would actually happen; only time would tell. For now this was a first step in the right direction and a pretty decent one he hoped so he knew that he just had to trust that things would get better. Henrik had let Nik go ahead with the ritual because he had thought that it was what his brother needed to do and he had been proved wrong so he knew better than to do anything like that without talking to his brother again. “Maybe not but I’m quite good at finding loopholes no matter how well they’re hidden,” Henrik admitted with a shrug. He had studied enough of his mother’s grimoires to know the way that her mind worked when it came to her magic and he should have been able to find a way but Nik had managed to break the curse anyway so that was really all that mattered. Lifting his glass to his lips Henrik took a sip before studying Nik carefully as he spoke once more. “You’ll never be alone Nik, the others will never abandon you but even if they did I’m not going anywhere,” he assured him. His siblings had decided to stick around Mystic Falls because Nik and Elijah had made their town a home and a part of Henrik hoped that they had stuck around because he was there too. No matter what happened between them they always stuck together and that had never changed. “If they wanted to leave they would have done so already but they haven’t, they’re still here.” It meant a lot to him that the family was in Mystic Falls and he hoped that in time the rift that had grown between them would start to mend. As Nik spoke again, Henrik winced. He knew that his brother was right and he knew that it was all his fault but he refused to give up hope that things could be different this time. “I know things hadn’t been easy for any of you and that’s on me but that doesn’t mean that history as to repeat itself,” he said carefully. He knew that it was easy to fall back into old habits but it was also possible to break those and he knew that things had to be different. “Definitely unconditional love. You and I always looked out for each other and I still believe that part of you is in there,” he said confidently, his gaze locked on his brother’s as he spoke. NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

For years Henrik had believed his family to be dead. He had spent a thousand years in Heaven without them hoping that one day they would join him but they never did so he had been left to assume that they must have ended up somewhere else instead. It was only when he’d arrived in Mystic Falls that he had learned the truth that his siblings were still alive after all and ever since then he had been doing his best to bring them all back together. He had freed Rebekah and Kol from their coffins and he knew that he wasn’t going to stop until Finn was free as well. Henrik knew that his oldest brother had always been different from the rest, he had been distant and he had turned a blind eye to the things that their parents had done but at the end of the day he was still family and that meant the world to Henrik so he refused to give up on his brother. Henrik wanted nothing more than to have his family back together once more but whether or not that would include their parents remained to be seen. Mikael had always been a monster, he had beaten all of them but Nik had always had it the worst out of all of them. As for Esther, she was someone that Henrik had always been close to given that he was the youngest but he knew that his siblings felt differently about her than he did after everything that she had done to them so right now Henrik was happy to settle for just bringing his siblings back together once more. As Nik spoke, Henrik found himself studying his brother carefully for a moment. “I know only what I have been told but you underestimate me if you think that I would abandon you Nik. You and I don’t have the history of betrayal that you and the others have, we were close before I died and I know we’re both different people now but you’re still my brother and I’ll stand by you. I could have stopped the ritual but I didn’t, I knew that freeing your werewolf side was something that you had to do and I stand by that decision. Whatever happens I’m here for you.” That was something that Henrik was certain about but whether or not Nik wanted to believe that was ultimately up to him. Henrik knew that chances were he wouldn’t always like the things that his brother did but he knew Nik well enough to know that there was always a reason for his actions. It had been that way when they were younger and it looked like it was still that way now. Henrik knew that he would never be able to support senseless killing because that just wasn’t who he was but he had a feeling that it wasn’t who Nik was either, or at least he hoped that it wasn’t. Henrik trusted in himself and his magic enough to know that if anything did happen then he would be able to bring any innocent people who died back to life like he had after the ritual so the truth was that he really wasn’t worried about that. “I don’t believe that, if we are made by our history then I would still be the foolish boy who went and watched the men turn into wolves during the full moon and started all of this. We all learn from our mistakes and become better people because of them,” he explained with a shrug. That was something that Henrik had believed even before he and Elijah had found each other again, he’d had to because otherwise he would have lost himself to the guilt of leaving his family behind all those years ago. One thing Henrik had always known about Nik was that he was stubborn, though, and that didn’t seem to have changed. They had that in common. As Nik said that he had much to learn, Henrik felt a smile form on his face as he looked over at his brother. “Perhaps, but so do you.”NIKLAUS MIKAELSON
