At this time of year the sun would start dipping below the trees before the Grill started filling up with Saturday night diners and drinkers. Elijah had no intention of being out in the woods for long after dark but he hadn’t pulled into the driveway of the boarding house at the crack of dawn either. He’d doubted that either of the Salvatore brothers or their current boarders would appreciate it, and even if civility would allow it there had been stops to make in the town first. Luckily for him the kitsune who had, he thought, captured his youngest brother’s eye had already been up and at work when he’d arrived at Campbell’s. An apology had been on his lips all the same but Olivia had waved it off, happy to look at the hastily sketched map of the woods he had shown her before she had marked a few spots out for him. While he had leaned against the bar, lost in thought over the pictorial representation of what had once been home, Olivia had drifted away, returning ten minutes later to draw him from his reverie by depositing a basket on the bar in front of him. At his raised brow she’d merely grinned. ”You can’t take a girl traipsing around out there without at least feeding her.” Elijah had known it would be rude to refuse it but he couldn’t hold his tongue entirely. ”You didn’t have to, I’d intended to stop off on the way but it’s appreciated all the same. Thank you.” He hadn’t lingered after that, packing everything into the back seat of the car, leaving Olivia to set up her establishment for what would likely be a busy day. It felt good to know that Henrik had found someone with a heart as generous as his.
His eyes drifting to Niklaus’ ostentatious family mansion as he’d passed Elijah allowed his mind to consider the rest of his siblings. They had all been born here, barring Finn, but for some of them their memories of that scattered village in the woods likely held only pain, not the bittersweet nostalgia that had touched him on and off since his return here. It had sharpened when he had seen the arrowhead at Henrik’s throat, one fond memory of the life they’d lived here before his younger brother had been killed. They may have travelled all across the world since then but home was still here and he was returning to the spot that had once been that with Tatia today. Leaving the basket and map in the car Elijah stepped out of it and approached the house. He spent enough time here now to have had a key but formal as he could be, he still preferred ringing the bell and waiting for an answer. Even with a thousand years of practice it was hard not to pick up on the sound of Tatia approaching the door. His typically cool expression warmed as the door opened, already moving into the space he was setting a hand on her hip, drawing the woman he loved in for the kiss he’d missed when he’d woken alone in his bed with the dawn. ”Good morning,” he murmured, his voice a rumble in his throat. ”I missed this, it felt odd waking up with the bed half empty.” It had been years since anybody had filled that space, had grown even remotely that close to him but within a year of Tatia’s return, less of them getting together, Elijah knew that he had grown spoilt. ”Are you ready to get going?” he asked, dropping his head to steal another kiss before she had the opportunity to reply.

Even now there were still times when Tatia found herself counting her blessings that she had been given another chance at life. Things were different now from the way they used to be, there was a time when she had felt sure that she and Elijah would end up growing old together and would have children of their own but that life wasn’t to be. Now Elijah was a vampire and Tatia hated the idea of him having to watch her grow old and die but at the moment she knew that she wasn’t ready to take the leap and become a vampire herself. It had been different for Lukas, he had his magic to rely on and he had been able to make himself immortal without having to change his very being but she couldn’t deny that it was something that she had been finding herself thinking about more and more lately. She knew that she could have a chance at a normal life and family if she ended things with Elijah but the truth was that her life had never been normal. She was born a thousand years ago into a very different time and she had been brought back to life by the King of Hell. Normal wasn’t an option for her life and that was something that she had learned to accept a long time ago. Instead she wanted to enjoy the time she had left at high school with Elena, Stefan and the others and once that was over then she knew that it might be time to take that next step. Either way she knew that Elijah was the person she wanted to be with so she was confident that they would figure it out together when the time was right. That day she knew that she would settle for just being able to spend some time with Elijah and she was glad that they had the chance to do just that. Since it was the weekend she didn’t need to worry about school and with Stefan’s help the night before she had managed to get caught up with her homework so if they could manage it then she knew that she wouldn’t pass up the chance to have Elijah to herself for the entire weekend. They had been through so much together both before she died the first time and after she was brought back and so much had changed but one thing that hadn’t changed was the way they felt about one another and she knew that she never wanted anything to happen to come between them again. As far as she was concerned Elijah was the one and she knew how lucky she was to still have a place in his heart after such a long time. Hearing the knock on the door, Tatia didn’t hesitate in making her way to the front of the house and a smile touched her lips as Elijah’s hand found her waist and he drew her in for a kiss. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she kissed him back. “Good morning,” she said, her lips brushing his as she spoke before stealing one more kiss. “I felt the same, it doesn’t feel right without you there now,” she admitted. Right now she knew that it was the way things had to be, she lived at the Boarding House with the Salvatore brothers and Skye while Elijah lived with his brother so they couldn’t spend every night together but she still missed waking up next to him. Before she could answer Elijah’s next question he was kissing her again and she couldn’t help but laugh. “Yes, I’m ready,” she grinned. “Are you going to tell me where we’re going?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The life they would have had a thousand years ago, had Henrik not died, had they lived through some of the slings and arrows their own time had to throw at them, wouldn’t have been a thing like the one they had now. Barring the fact that he had been turned into something close to monstrous by Esther, barring the fact that Tatia had been resurrected a thousand years after she had first died, these times were simply so different to the ones they had known. He and Tatia would have been wed in some form of a handfasting, if she accepted his hand that was. Dating would have been unknown, although the little gestures of a young men with his heart set on a young woman would not have passed them by. Home would have been a hut in their village, with his siblings and parents around them. Esther, he imagined, would have been quite excited at the prospect of grandchildren. Mikael on the other hand .. his father would have seen little more than another generation of warriors. Elijah would have said he was under no illusions, it would not have been a perfect life, but it would have been one with very different obstacles than the ones they were facing now. Either way, they would have fought through, for as long as they could be with one another. That was one lesson all these years of loss had taught him, do not pass up an opportunity. No matter what Niklaus still had in mind, what he might yet achieve in Mystic Falls, Elijah knew he could not allow fear to paralyse him, to allow it to waste the time he did now have with Tatia. Who could truly tell if they would have a tomorrow while she was so human, so fragile.
During the week school had a tendency to cut into their time together but knowing that Tatia wanted to go, that she wanted to learn and immerse herself in this century, Elijah would not begrudge her that. They had their evenings, they had the weekends and slowly, while Niklaus was scarce, they were living their lives. A thousand year old vampire taking the woman he loved into the woods for a picnic, to explore the land that had once been theirs, might have been ludicrous by some standards but with Tatia he wasn’t the man who’d suffered through those years, he was that earnest young boy again, his heart still pounding for her. Had it truly been able to beat it would have done so as Tatia opened the door. Her arms found his neck, his arm sliding around her waist as he drew her in. His lips curled against hers as she stole another kiss, his rarely used smile on his face as he rested his brow against hers for a moment. ”Tonight we’ll make sure that feels right. And tomorrow night if you don’t mind me dropping you off at school.” That should have felt ludicrous to say given how old he was, how old Tatia technically was given her date of birth, but for them it had become normality. Elijah chuckled lightly as they drew apart, his hand rising to slip through her dark hair. ”I considered keeping that a secret until we were there but unless I make you take the full ride out there with a blindfold in place, it’s perhaps best to say now. We’re heading out to the woods, to the spot we once had in that grove of chestnuts. I stopped at Campbell’s to ask Olivia if she’d found it on her trips out there. I have a map and a picnic basket she insisted on making for us.” And they now had that full day to find the spot that had once been theirs in a forest that had changed both little and beyond recognition in the years since they had known every square inch of it all.

Tatia’s time with Elijah had been full of ups and downs but somehow against all odds they had managed to get through it all together. It had taken her a while to forgive Elijah for what he had done to her when he first became a vampire but since being brought back to life the first time she had come to realise that things weren’t as straight forward as they had seemed when she was growing up. She had known that magic existed, after all Esther had needed her blood to use for a spell and her husband had told her the stories about magic running in his family before he died. She wasn’t sure whether she had truly believed those stories until Esther managed to turn her family into vampires but now Tatia’s eyes had been opened to the world that she and the people she cared about truly lived in and she knew that they couldn’t go back to living in the dark the way they once had. Things were so different now to the way that they used to be but one thing that hadn’t changed was the way that Tatia felt about Elijah. Not only had she forgiven him but she still loved him the same way she always had, more than ever in fact, and even death it seemed couldn’t keep the two of them apart. Elijah had lived for a thousand years without her before she was brought back the first time and she had almost doomed him to have to let go of her again when she gave herself over to Niklaus so that Elena’s life would be spared. She hadn’t known that Henrik and Lukas would find a way to bring not just her but the other two sacrifices back as well but not a day went by when she wasn’t glad that her son had disobeyed her wish and fought to keep her with him. She hadn’t wanted to leave Elijah, Lukas or anyone else that she loved behind but it had seemed like the only way at the time, now she was glad that she had been proved wrong. She knew that they weren’t out of the woods just yet, Niklaus was bound to return to Mystic Falls sooner or later but for now at least she knew that she wanted to just enjoy the day with Elijah. School took up a lot of her time, something that she wouldn’t have blamed Elijah for growing impatient with, but being around her friends was something that she enjoyed. She had never had the chance to go to school before and she couldn’t deny that it was fascinating learning more about the world that she now lived in. At first she had enrolled herself because she had wanted to make it easier to pass herself off as Elena’s twin but now it was something that she often found herself looking forward to although she couldn’t deny that she wished that she had more time to spend with Elijah. A smile touched Tatia’s lips as Elijah let his forehead rest against hers and she brought her hand up to let it rest against his cheek. “I would never mind that,” she assured him. Any excuse to spend more time with the man she loved was fine with her and the truth was that even though she knew that it might earn them a few surprised looks if he did drop her off at school she really didn’t care. Being with him made her happy and considering that they had already been parted twice she knew not to waste a moment of their time together. “I’ll have to thank her the next time I see her, it seems that Henrik has good taste in women,” Tatia said, stealing one more kiss before pulling the door to the Boarding House closed behind her and taking Elijah’s hand in hers. “I can’t wait to see our spot again. I know it will have changed but we made so many good memories there,” she admitted as they made their way towards his car. “You always were a romantic, I’m glad that hasn’t changed.” Tatia knew that Elijah had been through a lot after she died the first time but the Elijah she knew was still inside of him and moments like this proved it although it had to be said that the Elijah that he had become was one that she loved more than ever. Fate’s motives had never been clear, especially not in regard to the family that had cheated it by twisting nature but if there was one thing he had learned from it since he had returned to Mystic Falls to find the best parts of his past mysteriously waiting for him it was not to sit idly by and let opportunity slip away. With all that had been ahead of them Elijah knew that he could’ve let Tatia be, walk away from this place and leave her and the others for their own safety, find some way of forcing his siblings to leave with him. It would perhaps have guaranteed that Tatia wouldn’t have died a second time but it would not have solved every problem this town was facing. Nothing could have guaranteed a safe, long life for every person living here, nothing could do that. Safety was never absolutely and neither was happiness. You had to strive for both if you wanted them, had to fight for them even when fate turned into a cruel and wicked mistress. That was life’s truth. Elijah knew that Henrik was doing that now, after a thousand years on the other side of the veil and eight years in hell, being taught by the King himself and doing the demon’s bidding. His brother was grasping every opportunity, trying to bring his family back together while he finally started to live the life he’d been denied by the werewolves who had killed him while in their feral state at the full moon. Tatia had been doing the same, not willing to waste a single moment of her life and Elijah knew that he could not stand by and fret about what he may still eventually lose. The time would come again when death would visit this town but when it did he wanted to at least be able to say that he had not wasted a single opportunity bestowed on him by fate.
His eternal life had to have some purpose after all, did it not? Today’s was to get them both away from the town and the dark cloud that was still hovering over their lives. The woods might not have been considered entirely safe but Elijah knew that there were few things out there he could not cope with. They would be safe returning to a spot that two young lovers had once made their own. There were still a few eyebrows that would rise in town at the sight of him and Tatia together but for very different reasons to what they would have been. ”Then we’ll make this a full weekend,” he murmured, his smile broadening as he turned his head to kiss her palm. ”The Salvatores will have to do without your company.” Knowing Damon he would say it wasn’t a problem at all. The hot headed vampire was the sort to protest so much that it was obvious to most that his words did not truly reflect his feelings. His brothers could often be the same, Niklaus and Kol at least. Henrik had always been different somehow. It seemed that his brother’s eye had certainly turned in the direction of the kitsune who had furnished him with his map and their lunch. ”He certainly does,” Elijah agreed. ”I’m just glad to see him happy, to see him getting to live as he should have been able to.” Both his brother and Tatia had missed out on so much when death had taken them both. With Tatia’s hand in his Elijah made his way back to the car, opening her door for her with a faintly bashful chuckle. ”It did for a time, but I’ve found that side of myself returning now that it has the opportunity to shine. Memories of those afternoons we spent there had been playing on my mind. I knew the spot would still be there but I thought that time would’ve taken the trees.” Olivia had assured him that there were still some ancient ones there, the ground and its wooden sentinels remaining untouched even as generations had lived and died here.

It had taken Tatia a long time after she was brought back to get her head around what had happened. As soon as she had woken up in the woods she had known that something was different about the place that she had found herself in but it was only when she saw Elijah again that the pieces had fallen into place. The world they both lived in now was very different to the one they had been born into and not only had she had to come to terms with that and the fact that she had broken her promise to Lukas but she had also had to find a way to move on from the fact that Elijah had been the one to take her life from her in the first place. It would have been easy to stay angry at him but the truth was that that just wasn’t in her nature. After encountering a vampire in the woods while she was staying in an empty cabin out there she had realised just how easy it was for them to lose control and Elijah hadn’t even known what he was back then let alone how to control it. That knowledge had made it easier for her to forgive him and since then he had been a constant in her life. It had taken a while for them to get back together with the ritual and everything else going on around them but they had managed it and now she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. Even when she was angry at Elijah for what he had done to her one thing that had never changed was her love for him. She knew that it could have so easily been different for him, after all he’d had to live a thousand years without her, but she had quickly come to realise that his feelings for her hadn’t changed either and now she was looking forward to whatever future they might have together. She knew that Niklaus being back in Mystic Falls couldn’t be a good thing but she was certain that they would get through whatever he had planned together. She knew that Elijah was the person that she was supposed to be with so she was glad that they had been given another chance even if it had taken a long time to get to where they were now. The future was something that she had been thinking about a lot lately considering that Elijah, Lukas, Rebekah, Stefan and Damon were all vampires and would remain the same while she continued to age and she knew what she wanted to ask Elijah but the truth was that she had yet to work up the courage to. Perhaps that day she would finally do it but for now she was just looking forward to being able to spend some time alone with him. There were always others at the Boarding House or even at Elijah’s apartment since he lived with Henrik so she knew that it would be good to have some time together without any distractions. “I’m sure they won’t mind,” Tatia said, a smile touching her lips as Elijah kissed her palm. When she first moved into the Boarding House she had felt like a burden but now the brothers felt like family to her. There were still times when she felt like she was getting in the way but Stefan always told her that he liked having her around which made it a little easier. She wasn’t sure that Damon actually agreed with that but they had made her welcome and if she was honest the Boarding House felt like home to her now so she was happy with the way that things had turned out although she knew that she definitely wouldn’t argue with being able to spend the whole weekend with Elijah. “I’m glad he’s happy too, he has been through so much,” Tatia nodded. Henrik and Lukas had spent so much time together while they were growing up that he had honestly felt like a second son to her and he had died at a much younger age than she had. Tatia knew that she had been fortunate in that she’d at least had the chance to live her life and experience love before she died but Henrik hadn’t been that lucky so it was good to know that he was getting the chance to do that this time. Thanking Elijah as he held open the car door for her, this time Tatia didn’t hesitate the way she had done the first time before climbing into the passenger’s seat. “We made such good memories there, I can’t wait to see it again,” Tatia admitted, her smile returning as she looked over at Elijah. “I’ve been thinking about those memories a lot lately as well.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Putting the way Tatia had truly died out of his mind hadn’t meant that he had ever managed to erase her from his thoughts completely. Numerous times over the years Elijah had found his thoughts drifting to the life they’d had here in Mystic Falls before Henrik had begged Niklaus to take him to see the men turn into wolves under the full moon. It had been a simple life, one spotted with violence and fear, but a happy one for the most part. Just a few short months later than that night they would likely have been wed, the feelings that had snuck up upon the two of them resulting in a handfasting and more happy years than he was sure he had been gifted with in the thousand years since. It would’ve been idyllic, he had thought, at least through the rosy tint of spectacles that blinded him to the realities of what life truly had been like a thousand years ago. There had been no guarantee of long lives and health then, war could easily have taken him as he’d followed Mikael into the mouth of bloody hell, sickness could have come calling for any of them the way it had done for his elder sister before Esther and Mikael had moved to the new world. Nobody looked back at the great lost love of their life and predicted that it would’ve ended in grief and death just a few short years after it blossomed. It was all looked at it with those rose tinted spectacles in place, hearts aching for what might’ve been. Few got the opportunity to live out that opportunity again. Having been given it Elijah knew that he couldn’t have set it aside. No matter how much grief had threatened to cripple him, it was a chance he couldn’t set aside. Nearly losing Tatia had just cemented the idea. Twice it had been snatched away from them, twice she had been brought back to him, chances were, did it happen a third time, he wouldn’t be as lucky.
A man couldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, not if he wanted an ounce of the happiness he’d always sworn that he’d been denied. He had to make his own opportunities for it, had to hold on to it with both hands when it was within his grasp. For some a trip out to the woods might not’ve appeared as though it was much of an opportunity at all but for two who had grown up there, who had found their lives entwining there, it was a golden one. Having Tatia stay the night would be the cherry on top of that sundae. They didn’t always have the chance given the way their lives were unfolding here in town. Elijah’s lips had curled at the thought, brushing the palm of the hand cradling his cheek. ”I’m sure the two of them will be able to find something to do to entertain themselves.” Stefan’s relationship with Elena and Damon’s with Claire were part of the reason why the Boarding House was always so busy after all. Henrik’s presence was the reason the apartment was bustling with life. Elijah didn’t begrudge that, to have his brother back after a thousand years was a blessing he had never expected. ”It’s the life he should have had,” Elijah said softly. The life they had all deserved. ”I don’t know if he’s entirely figured out how he feels about her yet but I have a feeling that our dear kitsune is already more than half smitten.” His lips curved with the memories, Elijah made his way back around the car to climb into the driving seat. ”There were more memories made there than I was able to hold on to. With some peace finally I wanted to be able to re-explore them, to find the places we were happy here. All of us.” Even Niklaus had to have memories of this town, of the village it had been, that hadn’t been tainted by Mikael. Elijah’s brown eyes narrowed faintly, focusing on those woods ahead as he pulled away from the Boarding House and out onto the road.

Falling in love at a young age wasn’t something that Tatia had planned on but times were so different when she was growing up to the way that things were now and with younger siblings to feed she had known that it would take some of the strain off her parents if she started building a life for herself away from them. Her relationship with her husband had been a bit of a whirlwind and before long the two of them were married with a child on the way. It had been a lot to take in but Tatia had always felt certain that her husband would be right there with her every step of the way and she had been able to take comfort from that. After he died she had found herself alone with Lukas and even at such a young age and with her heart broken into pieces she had known that she couldn’t follow her husband onto her funeral pyre as was expected of her. A woman raising a child alone was unheard of in those days but her family had stood by her and eventually the others in her village had managed to move on, giving her the chance to do the same in the process. She had known that she would be content to raise Lukas alone but deep down she had missed the feeling of being able to give her heart to someone and have them do the same in return. It had taken her by surprise when both Elijah and Niklaus had started showing an interest in her but it was Elijah that she had found herself drawn to the most to the point where she had found herself able to see a future with him. He hadn’t cared that she already had a child, Elijah had treated Lukas as though he was his own and Tatia had loved him for it. Things were so different now to the way they used to be, Lukas had grown up without her and both he and Elijah were now over a thousand years old. Technically so was she but the difference was that her love and her son were both immortal and that was something that had been on her mind quite often lately. She liked being human, after all it was all she had ever known, but she had already died twice and been brought back and she knew that chances were she wouldn’t be as lucky if something happened to her a third time. As it was she was getting older with each passing day and even though people seemed to live a lot longer now than they had during the time that she and Elijah had been born into she knew that it was only a matter of time before people started giving them strange looks because she looked so much older than Elijah did rather than the other way around the way things were at the moment. For the time being she was still young but it wouldn’t stay that way forever and she knew that she needed to figure out once and for all what her future was going to look like but she knew that she could only do that by talking to Elijah so she hoped that she would have the chance to do that soon. “I should probably start thinking about getting out of their hair soon. They have both been so kind to me but it was only ever supposed to be a temporary arrangement.” The Boarding House had become her home and she knew that Stefan at least liked having her there but she knew that the last thing she wanted was to end up outstaying her welcome. Her time was always split between the Boarding House and Elijah’s anyway but there were still times when she occasionally found herself wondering whether Damon and Stefan would prefer to have the house to themselves again so she knew that perhaps it was time that she started thinking about getting a place of her own. “It is,” she agreed as Elijah said that it was the life that Henrik should have had before feeling a smile touch her lips as he spoke once more. “I think you might be right about Olivia and as for Henrik, I’m sure he’ll figure it out sooner or later. I imagine this is all new to him,” she nodded. Henrik was only young when he died and given what he had been through after he was brought back she wouldn’t be surprised if this was his first taste of love and it could take time to navigate through it. “I think that’s a great idea,” Tatia admitted as she climbed into the passenger’s seat and closed the door behind her. “Have you thought about the future at all?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The day he’d left New York to work his way towards their former home he had been intent on stopping his brother from destroying another young life. His mind had been on the past, on what the town had once been to them, but it certainly hadn’t paused to consider just what he was going to find when he’d arrived. If anybody had told him what waited there, Elijah thought with the wisdom of having lived through it, he wouldn’t have believed them. Their family were never blessed with second chances this way, they were caught in a vicious circle instead, bound together by the vow they’d made, unable to do anything but wander through a world they’d not really belonged in for a thousand years, making, in turn, each other and all of those who dared to be around them miserable. The devil, well, a demon, had rolled the dice though, and finally changed things. Pain had still found them here, Niklaus’ determination a steam roller that had squashed every attempt they had made to foil the ritual that required three people to die to remove Esther’s spell upon him, but Mystic Falls had offered as many blessings as it had curses. Tatia being here had broken open that wall Esther had helped throw up in his mind, finally allowing him to begin to forgive himself for her death after a thousand years. Henrik and Lukas being here had meant that he had Tatia had been given a third chance, that two teenagers whose lives would have been horrifically cut short were given a second chance themselves. None of them were looking to waste those chances Crowley had given them and even if Niklaus was not done with Mystic Falls and his endless search, they weren’t going to let it hold them back. Life moved on, even for those who weren’t trapped in the mortal coil of it.
When Stefan Salvatore had offered Tatia a room at the Boarding House it had been a relief of sorts. She was no longer alone in the abandoned cabin in the woods and she had people around her strong enough to at least put up some resistance if Niklaus had made an attempt to snatch her from there. In the end Tatia had gone from the house willingly but Elijah had still been glad that Tatia was there amongst others who would lay down their lives for her. The threat was still there but they had all grown used to living with it. Enough perhaps that Tatia had been giving her living circumstances some consideration. Nights together happened regularly enough but there were always others around there or at his apartment. Brown eyes grew shrewd as he studied Tatia’s face, unsure whether or not to allow hope to blossom. ”I’m sure both of them have enjoyed having you there, even if Damon may be incapable of showing it. Would you move out on your own?” Lukas’ apartment was a consideration but Elijah would be damned if he didn’t find the idea appealing. Opportunities were to be grabbed with both hands and Elijah hoped that his brother was doing just that. His lips curved at the thought of Henrik finding what he had. ”It is,” he agreed softly. ”I don’t know if he’d even started to notice the girls in the village before we lost him. I think it’s been some time for Olivia too. Henrik told me that her husband was lost decades ago.” Grief followed you for a long time after a loss, their own lives were proof of that. It still clung to them in a way now, although he was determined to push it entirely away for an afternoon, remembering less complicated times instead. Elijah buckled himself into his seat, starting the engine before he paused to glance at Taita. ”I have, I take it you have been too…” There was a seriousness to his words that told him she meant more than just getting through the next few months here in town.

Things were changing in Mystic Falls and if she was honest Tatia knew that was probably a good thing. Nik was back in town trying to find a way to create more hybrids but if the ritual he had performed was proof of anything it was that even when something terrible happened it was still possible to be given another chance and Tatia knew that she wanted to make the most of hers. Living her life as a human meant that she was vulnerable not just to attacks from the supernatural but to things like illnesses as well and she had come to realise some time ago that she didn’t want to end up having to leave Elijah, her son or her friends again. The way she saw it she had already been taken from them twice and if it happened a third time then she was pretty sure that she wouldn’t end up being so lucky again. She knew that she wanted to make the most of whatever time she had with Elijah and the others and if there was something she could do to ensure that they wouldn’t end up losing her again then she knew that she wanted to do it and that was something that she had been giving a lot of thought to lately. She didn’t want to give up being human but at the same time she didn’t want Elijah to have to watch her grow old and die while he remained the same either so needless to say it had been playing on her mind quite often. It was something that Tatia knew that she was going to have to talk to Elijah about sooner or later since it was a decision that involved him too and she planned on talking to Lukas as well although he had already made it clear to her after the ritual that he had no intention of losing her again. For now she knew that she just wanted to enjoy some time alone with Elijah, however. Whenever they were at the Boarding House there were always others around and it was often the same when they were at Elijah’s apartment. As much as she loved the Salvatores and Henrik she couldn’t deny that she liked the idea of having Elijah to herself for a while and it was good to know that he wanted the same thing too. “Damon likes having the house to himself so I’m sure he would enjoy having one less housemate around,” Tatia laughed. While it was true that she knew Stefan better than she knew Damon, during the time she had been living with them she had actually grown rather fond of both of the Salvatore brothers but she knew that the last thing she wanted was to end up overstaying her welcome. So far she had been living with them for over a year and while it was true that she was happy with the arrangement she knew that it couldn’t last forever. Sooner or later she was going to need to start standing on her own two feet. “I think I would, yes,” she nodded. “Lukas did say a while ago that I could move in with him but I don’t want to be a burden on him either,” she shrugged. Everyone around her had done so much for her during the last year and a half and she knew that she was never going to be able to truly repay them for the kindness that they had shown her but at least she could try and make things a little easier for them. “Besides, I think it would be good for us to have somewhere private we could go. Don’t you?” she asked, a playful smile touching her lips as she looked over at him. As much as she loved living at the Boarding House and Elijah loved living with Henrik she couldn’t deny that it would be good for them to have their own space. “I’m glad they’ve found each other, it sounds like this might be the right time for both of them,” she said, her smile widening at the thought. They both deserved to be happy and she honestly hoped that they would get the chance to be just that now. Fastening her seatbelt once they were both in the car, Tatia hesitated for a moment as she tried to find the words before nodding. “I have,” she said at last. “The ritual reminded me just how precious this life I’ve been given is and right now I could fall ill or it could be taken from me in any number of ways. I don’t want to put any of you through that again.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

They could have found themselves cast adrift in this town. Standing against his own brother, Elijah knew he had been taking a risk. Almost from the moment they had made the vow to one another Niklaus had been picturing them breaking it. Most of the supposed slights had been little more than bickering arguments that Niklaus had elevated to back stabbings in his mind. Occasionally perhaps they had twisted that knife, Rebekah when she had called their father to New Orleans knowing what he would do, Kol when he had refused to toe the family line for the safety of all of them … and himself, ultimately, when he had chosen Tatia and the people of this town over his own brother. Elijah had fully expected to find himself in a coffin for that but it seemed that in the wake of the ritual Niklaus had found himself bigger fish to fry. His brother had found his way back to Mystic Falls now but still hadn’t arrived at the apartment he shared with Henrik or the Boarding House to wreak his revenge on them all. Elena, Tatia and the Salvatores alike were probably expecting it just as much as he was but still, the Salvatores had kept them home open for Tatia. They had been on her side, and by his extension his, almost from the very moment the two of them had rolled into town and no matter how much he did, Elijah didn’t think he was going to be able to repay them both for that. Damon would undoubtedly demand a ridiculously high price but beneath all of that bluster was a decent man that few were allowed to see.
The elder Salvatore would put on a good show about wanting Tatia to move on from her room at the Boarding House but Elijah suspected that it would be a case of the lady doth protesting too much. If the Boarding Room became empty again he would miss all of those distractions he liked to complain about. Elijah smiled softly at her laughter. ”I’m sure Damon would like to tell everybody in earshot that he’ll enjoy having one less person there but it’s all bluster and hot air with him.” Beneath that was a man much like Niklaus, a man who had grown up in the shadow of a father would had never shown an ounce of pride in them. Damon, at least, seemed to be moving past that. God only knew how far Niklaus had managed to get past his own demons in his absence. Her absence lamented or not, he did believe that it was time for Tatia to move on. Not entirely with him when it came to accommodation but on all the same. Dark brows drawing together Elijah reached out to squeeze Tatia’s hand in emphasis. ”You wouldn’t be a burden to any of us,” he said vehemently, ”but perhaps it is for the best that this is a step you take on your own.” In their day it would’ve been unheard of but this most certainly wasn’t their day. ”I can certainly see the appeal in a private little hideaway,” Elijah admitted with a grin.
It was a step they would’ve eventually taken in their village before Henrik’s death had changed everything. Finally they were able to take those steps together, as Henrik was managing to take his own with Olivia. ”We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed for that. If there’s anywhere I think all of this can happen, it’s here.” Mystic Falls might have been the source of all their pain but now it was the bedrock they could base their future upon too. It was easy to picture it as they got in the car and he started the engine. Elijah’s throat worked as he guided the car back out of the drive and on to the road. ”We’re not going to lose you again. We’ve all vowed to make sure of that. I don’t want you to worry that we’re going to be torn away from one another again.” Elijah reached out, linking his fingers with Tatia’s as he drove with the grace of a man who’d been doing it for a century. It was natural to fear that the third time would be the charm, however, all they’d been through had taught them that all good things could be snatched away.

Spending time with Elijah was something that Tatia cherished and even though they often ended up spending the night together either at the Boarding House or at Elijah’s apartment it wasn’t very often that they got to do something like this. Nik’s ritual had been an eye opener for Tatia, even though she had handed herself over to him willingly so that Elena would live she hadn’t appreciated just how easy it would be for him to take her life. For a while he had seemed conflicted about it and he had even given her the chance to change her mind but after she had made it clear to him that she wasn’t going to do that, she had died. She was lucky that Henrik and Lukas had brought her back along with Riley and Grace and that was something that she hadn’t expected at all but she also knew that she couldn’t rely on it happening again. Last time she had made her peace with dying because it had meant that Elena would get to live her life the way she deserved but now that Tatia was actually faced with a future that she might get to live she had been thinking more and more lately about what she wanted it to be like and no matter what happened she knew that she wanted Elijah to be a part of it. It had taken them a while to get back together after she’d remembered what had happened the day she died but she knew that she loved Elijah and she was certain that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him the way that she would have done if things had worked out differently. Another thing that had been playing on her mind lately was her living arrangements. She knew that she couldn’t stay with Stefan and Damon forever but she would be lying if she said that the thought of living on her own didn’t scare her a little. She had done so out in the cabin in the woods but that was different, now she was so used to having others around her and she knew that she didn’t want to go back to that lonely way of life. It was something that she knew that she would need to seriously consider sooner or later though so she knew that she was going to have to at least try and keep an open mind after graduation. “It is most of the time,” she agreed as Elijah said that most of the time Damon’s protests were just hot air. “He has been good about letting me stay this long though,” she added. He could have easily refused to let her stay and if he had then she was pretty sure that even Stefan wouldn’t have been able to talk him around but thankfully it hadn’t come to that. “That would be nice,” she admitted as Elijah mentioned a private hideaway for the two of them. “I’m not sure I like the idea of living on my own again but I’ll get through the rest of the school year and then think about it some more,” she shrugged. It had been playing on her mind a lot lately but since she and the others were now in their senior year she knew that she wanted to get through that before making any definite decisions. “I think you might be right,” she agreed as Elijah said that if there was anywhere that things could work out then it was Mystic Falls. It was still a little strange to think that the town had been built on the land that their village had once stood on but she knew that that was probably why she felt so at ease there. Settling herself in her seat, Tatia’s eyes were fixed on the road as Elijah drove until he linked their fingers together and she finally turned to look at him. “You can’t guarantee that, Elijah,” she sighed as she looked over at him. “You might be immortal but I’m not, I’m human and that means that anything could happen. One of Katherine’s enemies could mistake me for her or I could even fall ill or end up getting into an accident. I’ve been brought back twice already, I wouldn’t want to push my luck and rely on it happening a third time,” she added as she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “I love you, Elijah, and no matter what happens that is never going to change but I can’t put you, Lukas or the others through that again.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Making plans for the future should have been easy for a man who’d had a thousand years of practice but if there was anything that those years had taught him it was that plans could always be altered, could be shattered before your very eyes. From a child Elijah had known that nothing in life was guaranteed, all those things that should’ve happened if fate was kind blown on the winds of ill fortune instead. His eldest sister should have been able to survive childhood, his youngest brother too, but ill fortune had found them both. He should have been able to grow old with the woman he loved by his side, not find his hands bathed in her blood as the hunger nature had cursed them all with thanks to Esther’s meddling had taken over. The woman beside him now should not have had to wait a thousand years to see her son grow, to live the life she had deserved. Having suffered through it all and found him almost guided almost back to the very spot where a kinder fate would have seen him all those centuries before, Elijah knew he could not look a gift horse in the mouth. Still, that voice in the back of his head had a tendency to warn him that this chance might not have been an eternal blessing. There was no guarantee of what the future would bring for them. Loss, pain, grief, it could all lie ahead again but that possibility couldn’t stop him from living now, he’d learned that much. You couldn’t stand by and let the world spin past you to try and avoid ill fortune, all that brought was misery and they had suffered enough of that for a dozen lifetimes. Both of them had.
Opportunities were to be grabbed, even if it was just one to spend time together out in the woods. Or branch out of the one place you had been truly able to call home in this town so far. There were people here who had cared enough about Tatia to bring her out of the woods and into the safety of their home. He had been grateful for that, knowing that she was safe. Elijah smiled at Tatia’s agreement over his description of Damon. ”I’d have thought it was about ninety percent of the time,” he jested dryly. ”I suspect he’s enjoyed having you there more than he would like to admit. Even those who protest that they want solitude need people around them sometimes.” Tatia had a good heart, she would have seen past the way the elder Salvatore tried to keep people at arm’s length after what Katherine had done to him. Damon seemed to be moving on with his life, as the two of them were. Elijah glanced aside, studying Tatia’s profile as she shrugged. ”There is still time to think,” he murmured. And to perhaps consider a step to take together. As much as he had enjoyed living with Henrik circumstances had begun to change for both of them. Elijah’s smile was crooked as it hooked up at one corner. ”I’m always right.” But he wasn’t, and no matter how hard he wanted to, he couldn’t bend fate to his will. Nobody could control everything, he couldn’t prevent Tatia from growing old or ill, he couldn’t always protect her from the dangers of this world. The thought had Elijah’s teeth gritting, his jaw flexing. ”How do we change it?” he asked hoarsely, the thought of losing her squeezing his heart hard enough in his chest to send pain rippling through his bones. ”I couldn’t wish what I am on you. It would prevent so much harm but…” It was a constant source of pain too, even if you forbade yourself from feeding on humans. He had spent a thousand years lamenting what Esther had done to them all, seeing mostly the curse of it, not the blessings it could bring.

Tatia knew that her life should have turned out very differently to the one that she was living now. There was a time when she was a widow raising her young son with the help of her family after losing her husband in battle and if she was honest she had thought that she would end up living out the rest of her life alone. Elijah and Nik had changed all of that, though, as had the friendships she had formed with Rebekah and Kol. It had taken the others in her village a long time to see her as anything other than the young woman who had defied their customs when she had refused to follow her husband onto the funeral pyre but they had all been kind to her. Rebekah had become every bit a sister to her as her own younger sister was and Kol had become someone that she could confide in. As for Elijah and Nik, she had come to love them both in different ways but in the end it was Elijah who had captured her heart and she stood by that to this day. She knew that she would always care for Nik even after what he had done during the ritual but the love she felt for Elijah was so strong that it couldn’t be denied and she was done with trying to ignore that. For a while after learning what he had done to her she had distanced herself from Elijah and while it was true that it was what she had needed at the time, that was no longer the case. Now she had learned to forgive him for what he had done and she had come to realise that the way she felt about him still hadn’t changed so she was glad that they got the chance to explore that. Things would have turned out very differently if they had continued courting before Esther turned her children into vampires but there were certain things about this time that Tatia enjoyed and not having to worry about what anyone else thought about their relationship was definitely one of those things. She knew that she was fortunate to have been given not just a second chance with Elijah but a third as well and she knew that she wanted to make the most of whatever time they were able to spend together. She knew that things wouldn’t always be like this, after all if things remained as they were then in another twenty years or so then she would look old enough to be Elijah’s mother and she couldn’t deny that that felt strange to her. What would happen in the future was something that had been weighing on her mind a lot lately and it was something that she knew that she was going to have to speak to Elijah about sooner or later but broaching that subject was much easier said than done. “You would know,” she teased, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at Elijah. “As strange as it sounds, he and Stefan feel like family to me now,” she admitted. They had taken her in and given her a place to stay, they had made sure that she had everything that she needed and they had even signed their home over to her so that they could all be safe. She knew that she owed both of them so much and she was pretty sure that she was never going to be able to repay that kindness. “I know and I will take it,” she nodded. Moving out wasn’t a decision to be taken lightly so she knew better than to rush it. She was still getting used to the way some things worked these days but from what she understood it wasn’t unusual for men and women to live together out of wedlock so finding somewhere to live with Elijah was definitely the most appealing option to her but she knew that he had Henrik to think about as well so that was something that they could perhaps consider a little further down the road. As Elijah said that he was always right, Tatia couldn’t help but laugh. “I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” she teased, her tone light as she spoke. It didn’t take long for the conversation to go down a much more serious route and Tatia reached over and took Elijah’s free hand in hers. “I know it wouldn’t be easy but I don’t see any other way Elijah,” she said gently as she gave his hand a squeeze. “I don’t want it to happen right away but after graduation I’d like you to turn me,” she said, well aware of what she was asking and how much her life would change. It was something that she had given a lot of thought to lately and it was the only way she could see things working out the way that they both wanted them to. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Family for a Mikaelson was a twisted concept. It had started to grow that way long before he’d made his first appearance into the world with a squawl. The loss of a single child had cracked something deep within Esther that the birth of five more hadn’t been able to mend. In fact the damage had only grown with time, her marriage tainted by her drifting into the arms of another, her betrayal revealed to her children at the hardest moment of her life. Like vines it had become impossible tangled, gnarling around things, choking the life out of them. A thousand years and as many metaphorical hatchets hadn’t prevented that choking gordian knot from strangling all of their lives. Those shoots still burst free, still closed around them, still kept them tied to one another. In the wake of the ritual Elijah had hoped that in some way his brother might finally have found some freedom but they were as bound to one another as they had always been. Niklaus wasn’t happy with breaking the bonds Esther had put upon him, he wasn’t happy to still have his siblings. The only thing that would bring him that was to see them all back in their coffins, to be surrounded by the hybrids he was so desperate for. He had promised not to give up on his brother but Elijah could feel those occasional strands of doubt wrapping around him like cobwebs. The family he had believed in were still there somewhere but it was hidden beneath those vines, strangled half to death by their own foolish beliefs, their guilt and anger. Family didn’t have to be blood but when it was born of that life stuff, matters only became more difficult. There was no choice to it then, just duty and promise and perhaps the most complicated of all … love.
In Tatia’s case she had Lukas again after all those centuries without him but she had a family of her choosing too. Elijah honestly doubted that Damon would have liked the idea at first but circumstances had drawn people in this town together instead of throwing them apart. Rue touched Elijah’s smile as he ducked his head slightly. Heat would have coloured his cheeks had he not been what he was. ”It doesn’t sound strange at all. They have been there for you through more than any of you could ever have anticipated.” Now their fledgling was considering flying the nest and that was going to mean a change for them all, eventually. It was easy to want to rush away, to find somewhere for the two of them to lose themselves in each other again but they both knew that there were other factors in this, other people whose presence meant something to their lives. ”As long as you need,” Elijah urged, his gaze lingering for just a moment longer before it returned to the road. They had time now, even if Tatia’s mind was already set on the fact that the years were going to eventually leave them unbalanced, her aging while he stayed the same, the curse bestowed upon them robbing him of that. He’d grinned, a quick, bright gesture as she’d teased him over always being right. ”I’d beg to differ,” he managed before those lines had begun to furrowing his brow and feather in around his eyes. Elijah’s throat worked as Tatia took his hand, his gaze ticking from one side of the road before them to the other, restless. ”I’ve seen it as a curse for as long as we’ve suffered under it,”{/b] he admitted. ”I’ve seen what it has done to my family and to those we’ve turned. I wouldn’t have wanted that for you…” His words trailed off, knowing that without any other solution presenting itself, it would be the only way they had of the two of them near guaranteeing themselves an eternal life together. Slipping his hand from hers for a moment, Elijah brought the car to a gliding stop at the side of the road, right where he’d intended to for their trip to the woods anyway. ”You would willingly go through all of that for a life with me?”
