There was always a burst of relief at this time of night, a second wind that came with the realisation that the work day was almost over. Olivia was well aware that most people felt the same way when five o’clock rolled around, or the final bell at school rang but few of them would enjoy having that feeling hit at close to midnight. Even before she’d opened Campbell’s here in Mystic Falls she’d been a night owl, happy to sit up with one of her siblings, talking and dreaming around the kitchen table, until the rosy light of dawn started filling the yard. When others in the village she’d lived in with George had started to drift out of the local bar yawning and protesting exhaustion the two of them had always felt like they were just getting started. Despite all the supernatural goings on in Mystic Falls the folks here seemed to generally like heading home early. There were still a few dotted around the bar as she made a last round of the place, tucking chairs up on the tables in preparation of cleaning the place first thing in the morning. Olivia made her way amongst them, collecting the occasional glass, patting people familiarly on the shoulder as she passed them. ”Come on folks, drink up. Gotta close this place up before Cinderella here finds himself turning back into a pumpkin at midnight.” She winked at Ares as she said it, knowing the boyfriend of her right hand woman, Remi, would take it in jest. ”Go on and take Remi home. I’m almost done here and if I need anything I’m sure Henrik will give me a hand.” She looked down the bar as Ares immediately got to his feet, smiling fondly at the dark haired man she’d reunited with here in town.
Olivia turned her wrist, letting the light from overhead catch on the diamond she wore on her wrist. A gift in return for digging up the arrowhead his brother had carved for him a thousand years ago. It was one hell of a thank you and so much more than she thought she deserved but then again there always seemed to be more than met the eye with Henrik. She’d admired the way he was willing to fight when she had met and battled alongside him that first time. He’d come to mind often after they had parted ways but she’d never imagined that she would find him here. For the first time since the night George had been killed it felt like she had a home, people around her she considered family and when she looked at Henrik, there was something more, something she hadn’t allowed herself to feel in decades. Olivia smiled at the warmth kindling in the pit of her stomach as she slipped behind the bar and leaned on it in front of him. ”That last call didn’t include you,” she promised, flashing a smile at him. ”I actually volunteered you for closing up duty with me so I could let Ares get Remi home a little early. You haven’t got anywhere else to run off to have you? Your brother’s not expecting you back for a certain time?” Olivia almost groaned as she spoke the words, her cheeks colouring slightly as she chuckled in embarrassment. It had been her mouth saying the words but that had sounded like her mum’s voice coming out of it, Florence Ashby ever the mother hen. ”What I should’ve said was you don’t mind keeping me company do you.” Far less her mum that time, more the woman who’d really come to appreciate a man’s presence in her life again.

Even though Henrik hadn’t known exactly what was waiting for him when he arrived in Mystic Falls he had quickly found a reason to stay. He knew that Crowley hadn’t liked it, the demon had sent him there so that he could win his siblings over and convince them to join his side in the war against Azazel but seeing his family and finding Olivia again had given him a reason to want to start living his life for himself instead of for the King of Hell. For eight years Henrik had done his bidding without asking questions, using every resource at his disposal to learn as much about magic as he could, and in a way he had come to think of Crowley as a father figure but the demon had let him believe that his siblings had died a thousand years before and it had taken a long time for Henrik to feel like he might be able to forgive that. Even now he knew that he was done being at Crowley’s beck and call all the time, he showed up when he was needed but otherwise he was making a home for himself in Mystic Falls and that was something that he knew he wasn’t going to let anyone take away from him. For far too long he had lived his life surrounded by demons, only mingling with humans for a short while during the various tasks that Crowley let him out to complete but he wasn’t a child anymore and he refused to let himself be pushed around like one a second longer. Since arriving in Mystic Falls he had been able to do some good with his life, he had managed to bring Allison out of her coma and he had brought Ben back to life after he died on a hunt and he had also managed to bring back all of the sacrifices used in his brother’s ritual to free his werewolf side. Henrik felt like his magic was growing stronger with each passing day and being surrounded by people he loved he knew that he was growing stronger in other ways too. He had people to fight for now, people he cared about and would protect until his dying breath and that was something that he hadn’t thought that he would get to have again. One of the people he had come to care about was Olivia. He kept telling himself that it was just friendship he felt towards her but the more time they spent together the less sure he was about that. There had been something there between them when they had first met, something that didn’t seem to have gone away during the time they had spent apart, and if anything being in the same town again seemed to have made it intensify on Henrik’s part at least. She had quickly become one of the most important people in his life and even though he knew that he should probably be keeping his distance because Olivia still missed her husband he just couldn’t seem to bring himself to do that. Instead more often than not when he had nothing else on in the evenings he would head to the bar and that was exactly what had ended up that evening. After a few drinks with Olivia and a chat with some of the other residents of the town that he had ended up getting friendly with time was getting on and before he knew it Olivia was telling everyone to drink up so that she could close up for the evening. He couldn’t help but chuckle to himself as she said that he would help her so that Ares could take Remi home and as Olivia came to a stop in front of him he couldn’t help but smile. “So I heard,” he grinned before looking at her in surprise as she asked if his brother was expecting him home by a certain time. “I think the last person to ask me that was Tatia when Lukas and I got a little too into a game we were playing when we were kids,” he laughed before letting his smile return as she corrected her question. “There isn’t anywhere I would rather be,” he admitted as he finished his drink before setting the empty glass back down on the bar in front of him. “What can I do to help?”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

From the moment the ground had erupted around their gun emplacement, blocking out the sight of the bomber bearing down on them all, Olivia had known that her life wasn’t going to be the same again. A part of her had always yearned to get out of their little patch of North London, to use her brain for something other than totalling up someone’s weekly grocery bill but until war had hit the world it hadn’t looked like she would ever get the chance to. She would find some local boy and settle down as most of her sisters had, she’d cook dinner and pop round to her mum’s daily with the kids she’d undoubtedly have. It had been a future that had made her sad to think about but given how things had turned out afterwards she knew it was one that probably would’ve been safer for all involved. George showing up at the door had changed all of that. She’d unlocked some sort of power inside of her, one that was both miraculous and terrifying. It had swept away all of the normality that might’ve returned after the war and had taken her away from her family. While they’d all grown older she’d remained exactly the same. When she’d received word about her mother Olivia had known that it would likely be one of the last times she’d see her siblings. No matter what happened after that she couldn’t go back and be comforted by a hug from her mother or a soft word from Jack or Teddy when she was feeling down. Most of them were gone by the night she’d lost George and those few were left couldn’t offer her comfort, not without her having to tell them stories that would turn the nice normal lives her siblings had on their heads. Any normalcy she’d felt in that little village had gone and would take nearly 50 years to return. She had it here, now, in her staff, in her friends, like Nick and Lauren, in Henrik.
She’d grown used to seeing him on the other bar, had come to look forward to the nights when she’d turn around with a glass or bottle in her hand and see him perched on one of the stools. Those nights when he didn’t appear Olivia had found herself looking up every time the door opened. Tonight she hadn’t had to look all that hard, he’d made his appearance and she’d drift back to him between customers, spending what moments she could with him. Life was too short not to do that with the people who mattered to you, even when your life was technically almost eternal. You needed to laugh every now and then, needed to chase those moments that would keep you going long after all of this was gone. Tilting her head slightly, Olivia returned Henrik’s smile. ”My sisters would’ve told you that I’m a great one for volunteering people for things. I always managed to get them to spoil their little sister.” Her face growing hot, Olivia ducked her head and chuckled. ”I knew it sounded wrong the minute the words were out of my mouth,” she admitted. ”I sounded just like my mum.” Like mothers the world over and throughout time. It had been a thousand years since Henrik and Lukas had been those kids. Her gaze rose back up to meet his as he said there wasn’t anywhere he’d rather be, the slight flutter in her stomach covered up when she picked up his empty glass and shot him a wicked grin. ”That’s probably not the thing to ask the woman who’s about to put you to work,” she warned. ”If you can grab the last of those glasses and get them stacked in the dishwasher for me I can get the place cashed up quickly.” Getting the takings into the safe would be the last thing to do tonight but she wanted to wait until the place was empty of all but her and Henrik to do that. She trusted the folks in Mystic Falls but still she was careful.

For a long time Henrik had lived his life the way that Crowley had wanted him to, he had learned as much about magic as he could and he had done the demon’s bidding for eight years but it was only when he arrived in Mystic Falls that Henrik had realised what he was truly missing. He had ended up running into Elijah pretty much straight away and seeing his brother again had helped fill a hole he hadn’t even realised was still there. His family had always meant the world to him and now three of them were finally in Mystic Falls together so Henrik knew just how lucky he was. He didn’t just have his family though, he also had amazing friends in Lukas, Allison and the others he had ended up getting to know during his time in Mystic Falls and he had someone special – someone he couldn’t imagine having to say goodbye to again. In what felt like a short space of time Olivia had become important to him, they had known each other before they found each other again in Mystic Falls and she was one of the people that he had found himself hoping that he would see her again. Now the spear head his brother Nik had carved still hung around his neck to serve as a reminder not just of the childhood that he and his siblings had shared together but also of the day he had been reunited with Olivia. Before learning that she was in town he never would have imagined going to a bar as often as he had done lately but whenever he found himself at a loose end he often headed there, knowing that she would always make time to talk to him. There was something about her that kept drawing him to her, something that he was fairly certain his brother Elijah might have picked up on even though he had yet to say anything, and no matter how hard he tried he just couldn’t seem to stay away from her for too long. He wasn’t used to feeling like this, between dying far too young and doing the bidding of the King of Hell for eight years after being brought back he had never liked someone before but he was starting to think that that was exactly what was happening with Olivia and he couldn’t deny that it scared him. If he liked her then it meant that he had so much more to lose if anything ever happened to her and he wasn’t sure if he was ready to go down that path just yet. As Olivia spoke, Henrik felt a smile grace his features. “Why doesn’t that surprise me? I bet you had them all wrapped around your little finger,” he teased, able to fall into that habit so easily around Olivia. She was one of the few people that he didn’t have to hide who he was with, she knew who he was and what he had been through and despite knowing about his screwed up life she still seemed to enjoy spending time with him so he knew better than to take that for granted. When he was around the others he had befriended in Mystic Falls he sometimes found it difficult to let them get truly close to him but with Olivia he had no such trouble. She always seemed to know how to through his defences and even though that was something that had confused him to begin with, he had since learned better than to argue with it. Henrik couldn’t help but laugh as Olivia spoke again and he reached over to give her hand a gentle squeeze. “Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me,” he grinned. No matter how much he liked to tease Olivia at times he knew that he would never dream of embarrassing her so he wasn’t going to say anything. In a way it was actually quite sweet that she had worried about him like that. “Don’t worry, I’ve known you for long enough to know exactly what I’m letting myself in for,” he chuckled. He knew that he would be able to deal with whatever jobs Olivia sent his way and as she asked him to grab the rest of the glasses and stack them in the dishwasher, he nodded. “Sure,” he said, climbing off his stool before collecting up the glasses that had been left lying around and did just as she had asked. By the time he had done that the bar was deserted and Henrik made his way over to the door, sliding the lock into place to stop anyone else from entering before making his way back over to Olivia. “What would you like me to do next?”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Growing up in a house that was always full of people had been amazing. Nine sisters, two brothers and a mother who’d doted on them all despite having to do it on her own, she honestly couldn’t have asked for anything more than that that. It was why she’d hesitated on that night George had come to the house for the second time. Marriage was one thing, she’d wanted that with him but leaving behind her family, moving across the world, that had scared the hell out of her. The first couple of years had been hard, the separation feeling like a massive gulf between them despite the letters they were exchanging. The homesickness had eased after a while but as the years went on the distance just seemed to grow further and further. First her mum was gone and then one by one she’d lost her siblings too. She still had nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and probably even great, great ones now but the contact was sporadic, the lies having to grow thicker as it got the point where the Olivia Campbell she should’ve been would have been receiving her hundredth birthday card from the Queen. Olivia regretted the lies she’d had to tell but to keep those she loved safe, it had been the only way, George had been absolutely right about that. People out there were willing to hurt anybody who demonstrated the slightest bit of supernatural ability, no matter how altruistically they were using it. All it would’ve taken was a hint to the wrong hunter than her family were harbouring a kitsune and they could’ve been used, could’ve been killed. As George had been. That knowledge had made it easier to cut ties with them but it hadn’t stopped the heartache since.
Talking about them with Henrik now brought back an ache in her heart but it wasn’t the horse kick to the chest it would once have been. Thanks to Florence Ashby she’d had a wonderful childhood. Remembering how she had been in her family’s eyes had Olivia chuckling in response to Henrik’s smile. ”I was the youngest, so of course I did. Nine older sisters, two brothers, there was a lot of doting going on.”. The Ashbys had been fair and generous, caring and hardworking, that was the legacy she tried to live up to. Lifting her hand now, she grinned and crooked her finger at Henrik. She imagined it had been the same for him and his older siblings. Looking up as Henrik squeezed her hand, Olivia felt the corner of her mouth rising in a crooked grin. ”I’m glad to hear it. My reputation for being a tough girl around here will be ruined.” Not that she had much of that sort of reputation. She was firm but fair with her staff and the customers. And just that bit softer with him. Olivia’s grin remained touched with wickedness as she sent him off. ”Long enough to trust that I won’t abuse my power?” she asked sweetly. And she wouldn’t. While Henrik hopped down from his stool to collect the glasses she opened the register and began to tot up the money that’d come in. The bar had struggled a little the first couple of weeks but now it was solidly turning a profit for her. By the time Henrik bolted the door she had the money bagged up and the area behind the bar cleaned up. Olivia picked the bag up to put in the safe, her other hand coming up to crook a finger at him. ”Grab yourself a drink and come on over to the dark side of the bar?” she suggested. ”I’ve just got to log this up and we’re all free for the night. Figured we could have a nightcap upstairs if you’re up for it.” They could’ve stayed in the bar for one but it always felt good to lock up and head out of the bar for the night, like taking off a pair of heels after wearing them all day.

Ever since learning that Olivia was in Mystic Falls Henrik had found himself seeking her out more and more often. There were times when he half expected her to turn around and tell him that she wanted some space but she seemed to enjoy spending time with him just as much as he enjoyed spending it with her. He wasn’t blind to the way that Olivia seemed to keep checking on him when he was at the bar but the two of them were friends and he knew that she was probably just looking out for him. She knew everything about his past including the fact that he was still adjusting to his life being his own once again and it was good to know that he had someone there to look out for him but he was pretty sure that what he felt about her meant so much more than just friendship. That was something that he wasn’t used to and the truth was that it scared him. Before he died he had never really taken too much notice of the girls in the village but then again there weren’t too many that were around his age. With Olivia he had felt a connection right from the start and that was something that only seemed to have grown since they had found each other again. The spearhead she had found that Nik had given him a thousand years ago was still hanging from the string around his neck. There was a time when he had felt like the spearhead connected him to his older brother and that was still true now despite the fact that Nik didn’t know that he was alive again but now it also made him feel connected to Olivia. He knew that the bracelet he had given her in return was probably a little much in the eyes of some people but at the end of the day she meant a lot to him and it hadn’t felt right taking the spearhead from her without giving her something back in return and the magic he had infused it with meant that he could keep her safe. There were increasingly more people in Mystic Falls that he cared about but Olivia was definitely up there with the people he cared about most and he knew that he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if something bad happened to her. “It was always the same in my family. I was the youngest so I think they all felt that they had to keep me safe,” Henrik admitted. His siblings had done their best to shield him from the awful things in life, in particular their father’s temper and the way he liked to lash out, but despite their best attempts he had still been able to see what was going on although he was powerless to stop it. Now that couldn’t be further from the truth, he had magic at his disposal and Mikaelson blood flowing through his veins so while he was that he wasn’t unstoppable, he also knew that he could hold his own when he needed to and he could finally protect the people he loved. “We can’t have that, can we?” he teased as Olivia said that her reputation as a tough girl would be ruined. As she spoke again he couldn’t help but laugh. “Just about,” he chuckled. “Who knows, I might even trust you enough to ask if you want any help around here on a more regular basis,” he added with a grin. The truth was he had been thinking about getting a job for a while so that he wouldn’t have to rely on Elijah so much and it would help him gain more independence as well so even though it was said in good fun he knew that if Olivia did need help then he would be more than happy to step in. “I’m definitely up for it,” he nodded. Moving to the other side of the bar, Henrik did as Olivia had suggested and poured a drink for himself but he also made sure to pour one for her as well and he took a sip of his drink as he waited for Olivia to finish what she was doing. Thinking of her past always threatened to leave her with an unshakable ache in her heart but with Henrik it always seemed like that pain didn’t fully manifest itself. Olivia wasn’t sure if that was because Henrik knew exactly what it was like to be away from his family but it was certainly easier to talk about what had been with him than it was with Remi or Ares or even Nick and Lauren. She wasn’t afraid to bring up George with him and either grieve people who’d known him or end up being asked the sort of questions that were painful to answer. A thirty year happy marriage was more than a lot of people were ever blessed with, a thirty year marriage when you didn’t even look thirty years old was the sort of ‘mystery’ that had people looking at you with doubt and fear in their eyes. That was the one thing that she had wanted to keep out of Campbell’s from the beginning. Human, vampire, werewolf, witch, kitsune, or even hunter, everybody was welcome and safe here. Just occasionally some were more welcome than others, people that the owner could share her own burdens with instead of the pretty apt cliché of it being the other way around, people she liked enough to have them hanging around after the doors were closed. Despite her friendliness with many of her customers Olivia knew that with Henrik it was more than just a matter of being good friends, some other edge had begun to touch things between them, at least in her eyes.
Those eyes had been drawn to him time and time again on the nights he’d been sat at her bar, little glimpses cast aside when her attention had wandered. They were on his smile now, studying the still young lines of his face. ”I think that’s the prerogative of all older brothers and sisters,” she said fondly. ”I was only a few weeks old when I went to live with them, I don’t think they ever forgot me being that squawly little mite. When I told them I wanted to go and work on the guns during the war I thought they were going to end up tying me up in the yard to stop me going.” Considering that she’d then nearly died when the German bomber had come within a hair’s breadth of destroying their gun she honestly couldn’t blame them. It had only been the sudden eruption of her power that had saved them all. Smiling almost proudly, Olivia shook her head. ”It’s better than they think of me as a tough cookie than a marshmallow, keeps them all in line when they’re in here.” Those who knew her as more than just the owner of Campbell’s knew better though, he knew better.
One sandy brow rose in Henrik’s direction, keen interest in her brown eyes as he grinned. ”Looking for a job are we? I’m sure I’ve got an apron around here somewhere in your size…” A part of her in that long buried, shadowed part of her that had first woken up when George had turned up at her mother’s door began to wake at the idea of him being here more often than he already was. Olivia encouraged it to hush as she concentrated on the money in the cash register, numbers always the thing she’d had a real talent for. Soon she had it all bundled up and as Henrik poured himself a nightcap she moved into the office, deftly spinning the combination into the safe before she put the bag inside. Another twist of her wrist to lock it and she was heading back out, a smile slanting her mouth. ”Already pouring drinks for other people, I might just have to hire you after all. I’m sure the female customers would love a handsome face on this side of the bar.” Picking up her own glass, Olivia tilted her head towards the office again, the internal staircase that led to her apartment above the bar. She held her hand out to him before she took a little half step back.

When he first arrived in Mystic Falls and realised that it was about time he actually started living his life properly Henrik really hadn’t had any idea how he was supposed to do that. For too long he had simply lived to learn more about magic and carry out different tasks for Crowley when he needed something done so it had taken him a while to figure out just what it was in life that made him happy but now he liked to think that he had found it. He had his family in Mystic Falls, he had friends and he also had Olivia. For the first time in a long time he had people worth living for and he knew that he was ready to make the most of the second that Crowley had given him. He still had yet to find his place in Mystic Falls even though he had been there for over a year now but he was doing his best and he was helping people where he could which he knew was the main thing. In a way he felt bad for having to rely on Elijah so much, after all his brother had given him not just a roof over his head but also access to more money than he could ever need, and sooner or later he knew that he wanted to find a way to stand on his own two feet more but that was easier said than done. He didn’t have the same background that a lot of people did, he had never gone to school or anything like that and any credentials he whipped up would be fake but he knew that he would figure something out sooner or later, he always did. “That’s true. There were times when it got annoying but now I understand why they did what they did,” Henrik admitted. His siblings had tried to shield him from everything as best they could since he was the youngest but he had still ended up on the wrong side of his father’s bad temper from time to time and he had still seen the way that the man treated his siblings. Throughout it all Henrik had stayed quiet, certain that there wasn’t anything that he could do to stop it, but that was no longer true. Now he could protect not just himself but also his siblings and the people he cared about and he knew that he wasn’t going to let any of them get hurt. “It is good that they supported you,” he nodded. There was a time when he had known that he would end up going to war with the rest of the men from his village if he had needed to but now things had changed and there were other options, ones that he knew that he wanted to explore while he could. “I think most of them know not to get on the wrong side of you,” he chuckled before feeling a smile touch his lips as Olivia asked if he was looking for a job. “I might be. Have you got any going?” He knew that he already spent plenty of time there anyway considering that for some reason he just couldn’t seem to stay away from Olivia so he knew that he wouldn’t say no to being able to kill two birds with one stone. As Olivia went to count the takings it was automatic for Henrik to pour a drink for each of them and as Olivia returned he lifted his glass to his lips and took a sip. “Hopefully they’re not the only ones who would,” he said, his smile mischievous as he looked over at her before taking her outstretched hand in his and following her towards the stairs. No matter how hard he had been trying to deny it there was only one person he was interested in and she was standing right in front of him. OLIVIA CAMPBELL

George Campbell had changed the course of her life. Learning what she had from him after he’d seen her literally raise the ground to protect her gun emplacement and those she was serving with from the bomb that had dropped, Olivia had realised that eventually her power would’ve emerged in one way or another but it was George who’d put it into context on the night he’d arrived at her mum’s house. All her mum and her sister’s had seen was a handsome Canadian pilot who was looking to romance the baby of the family. They’d never caught a whisper of what he’d told her, never learned what she was, it was something that she’d had to keep to herself. George helped her to unlock that power and he’d helped unlock a heart that hadn’t yet had anything than the first ephemeral flutterings of puppy love for some of the men she’d served with. With George both parts of her had developed, her skill with her katana and her heart, her love growing for him while he’d trained her and remaining a bright spark in the scorched remains of her heart after his death. The night she’d lost him had opened up the ground under feet, everything solid she’d had left in her life suddenly crumbling. For anybody that sensation would’ve been horrific, for a woman who’d always felt so grounded thanks to those in her life that meant the most it had been devastating. Olivia had hoped that the ground would one day start to feel solid again but each inch had taken its time to reappear beneath her, the final pieces only falling into place once she’d arrived in Mystic Falls. She had the bar here, had the support of other kitsunes in the form of Nick and his family, and she had Henrik. He was one thing she’d not seen coming when she’d rolled into the town.
And he was one that she was sure she couldn’t do without now. There was a tie between them that seemed to go beyond the friendship that had developed, starting with their shared history, running through to something that had tugged at her gut more than once of late. Laughter rolled through Olivia as she nodded in response to his words. ”Oh trust me, I was very familiar with that sort of annoyance. You should’ve tried being the youngest of twelve.” There were few things she’d gotten away with but at the same time there had never been any question that she’d find herself without someone there when she truly needed them. A hint of sadness touched Olivia’s smile as she thought of her brothers and sisters. ”It really took some convincing but I think they knew how much it meant to me.” Without her the men and women she’d been with on the night her power appeared would have died. It was a relief that nothing in town for her so far had been a matter of life and death. The worst she had to deal with were the drunks who wouldn’t listen and as Henrik said, most had learned not to get on the wrong side of her. Olivia grinned wolfishly at the idea of her being in charge of Henrik here. ”I do,” she promised. ”I can’t keep relying on Ares’ good will forever and things only seem to be getting busier here. Are you honestly interested?” Olivia hadn’t anticipated the idea but the more she thought about it, the more she liked the idea. There was a teasing tone in Henrik’s words as she hinted that her customers would love him to be there, and heat in her own cheeks as she started up the steps with her fingers tangled with his. ”Oh I’m sure Ares would like having you around too,” she managed breezily as she stopped to unlock the door in to her apartment. ”And I think I could stand to look at that handsome face a little more.” She looked up at it now, reaching up to pat his cheek gently as she stepped backwards into her apartment.

For eight years before he arrived in Mystic Falls Henrik had been a shell of the person that he was supposed to be. He had learned magic because Crowley had needed him to and he had spent years studying as much as he could but he had only ever left Hell when Crowley had needed him to do something on Earth. He had become a pawn in the King of Hell’s game and Henrik had stupidly let it happen. He had always drawn the line at killing, refusing to do that or hurt anyone else just to ensure that Crowley got what he wanted, but he had let himself get lost in the tasks that he was given as a distraction from mourning the loss of everyone that he had ever loved. Little had he known that they were still alive out there in the world and before he found Elijah again Olivia had been one of the few people he had actually come to care about. Right from the start there had been something different about her, he had seen a fighting spirit in her that was missing in most and after learning about what she had been through it had made him realise that perhaps it was about time that he started fighting back too. She had inspired him to start going against Crowley’s wishes more than the childish sneaking out and disappearances that he had done over the years and finding Elijah again had been enough to give him the strength to finally break free. Crowley was family despite everything that he had done wrong and Henrik knew that he would always be around when the demon needed him but for the first time in years he was living his life for himself and he wanted to make the most of everything that it had to offer. One thing he hadn’t planned on when he saw Olivia again was the way that she would end up making him feel. Often when he was on his own he found himself thinking about her and he had thought about asking Elijah what it meant but deep down a part of him already knew. Aside from the childish crushes on girls in the village he had grown up in that were common among boys his age before he died Henrik had never experienced love before, not really, but he had seen two of his brothers fall in love with the same girl so he knew the signs. He wasn’t even sure whether this was love that he was feeling but even if it wasn’t he was pretty sure that it was the makings of it and it had taken him a while to get his head around that. He was pretty sure that Elijah had seen the change in him but he hadn’t said anything, probably sure that he would figure it out on his own and now he had. He knew that Olivia had already been through so much but she had found a way through it and he admired her for that. He wasn’t sure if she felt the same way he did but one thing he did know was that he couldn’t wait much longer to find out. His family had a lot of enemies and the last thing he wanted was for any of them to have a reason to go after Olivia just for being close to him but he knew that she could hold her own and if Elijah could choose to be with a human even though he knew the risks then Henrik was pretty sure that Olivia would be just fine. As she spoke he snapped out of his thoughts and a laugh escaped his lips as she said that he should try being the youngest of twelve. “No thanks, the youngest of six was bad enough,” he chuckled. He had always understood why his siblings were so protective of him but he had seen and heard more than they could probably even imagine despite their best efforts to shield him from it all. As Olivia asked if he was honestly interested in a job, Henrik nodded. “I am. As much as I love Elijah I can’t keep living off of him together and I need something to keep me busy,” he explained, hoping that she would understand. There was always a lot to do in Mystic Falls as far as the supernatural world went it seemed but for once Henrik wanted something normal too so if Olivia needed some help around the bar then he was definitely happy to give it. Following Olivia up the stairs a smile touched Henrik’s lips as she said that Ares would like having him around more but it was the second statement that took him by surprise and as she patted his cheek before stepping backwards into her apartment Henrik’s eyes met hers and he took a step forward, his hand falling to her waist as he closed the distance between them and kissed her. In that moment he felt his heart start to race, kissing girls at thirteen hadn’t been the done thing when he was growing up so it wasn’t something that he had done before but in that moment he had been unable to stop himself. “Sorry but I needed to see what that felt like,” he admitted, his lips brushing against hers as he spoke as he hadn’t made any move to step back. There had been some things Olivia was certain she wasn’t going to miss when she’d packed up her bags and followed George across the ocean. The lack of prospects for a young woman, especially a married one, the constant watchfulness of her mum and all of her brothers and sisters, the bad weather … it had turned out that she was homesick for all of it within days. She’d been so far away from everything she’d known, thousands of miles separating her from the people who had taken her in and loved her unconditionally after she’d literally been dumped into their lives. A massive leap had been taken because of her heart and the way it had plunged towards her feet when George had arrived to tell her that he was being shipped back home and it had felt all the scarier without those hands around her, waiting to catch her if things hadn’t worked out. Those hands had been gone when the one lifeline she did have had been snatched. Throat aching, tears burning, her heart shattered Olivia had picked herself up and had plunged on blind, knowing that the last thing George ever would’ve wanted was for her to be lost too. Scrabbling around in that dark for years had been terrifying, the nightmares plaguing her, that constant ache in the base of her throat that she was certain had been her heart trying to tear its way free of her chest just to stop the pain of being trapped there in shreds. Trusting people in Mystic Falls had been another leap of faith, the thought of settling down here pretty intimidating until this town had revealed that she hadn’t been the only drawn here.
Olivia knew she might not have her brothers and sisters here now, most of whom would’ve been hidden away behind the bar, giggling over their littlest sister’s mentioning of them, but she had Henrik there and she trusted that if that ground disappeared beneath her again, it would be his hand that she found in the dark to pull herself away from that abyss. The feelings she’d been having towards her weren’t in any way familial though, the laugh that escaped his lips tugging at something in the pit of her stomach. ”You sure?” she teased, her heart still aching faintly. Henrik still had most of his siblings, had reunited with them after so long without them, hers were all gone, their great grandchildren only knowing of her in old photos and stories passed down. Even if she could go home it would all be different, so she had to stand strong here, on her own two feet. Olivia could empathise with Henrik wanting to do that now. ”That’s understandable,” she said softly, reaching out to cover his hand. ”I could honestly do with you here if you could stand working for me. The pay’s pretty decent and Remi will tell you I’m the best boss in the world.” Out of school at 16 she’d been desperate to do the same, only what had kept her busy had also numbed her mind until the war had given her a chance to break away from it. That war had changed her life, eventually bringing her right here. To Mystic Falls at least. Her slowly healing heart had brought her here to her apartment to almost holding her breath as she lightly tapped her fingers against Henrik’s cheek. Olivia shifted her weight, was going to take another step back but he was right there, the hand not holding his drink falling to her waist, drawing her in to a kiss before she’d really known it was coming. It had been thirty years since she’d felt a man’s lips against her own but her body hadn’t forgotten that breathless fluttery feeling that continued even after he eased back just enough to talk. Olivia smiled against his lips, hazel eyes glittering beneath lowered lashes as she looked at him. ”And what was it like?” she whispered. Her nose wrinkled, her smile growing as she put just a few centimetres between them. ”Was that your first kiss?”

Henrik hadn’t thought that any of this would end up happening when he first arrived in Mystic Falls. For a long time he had resigned himself to just being Crowley’s puppet but running into Elijah had made him realise that he did have a reason to fight after all. He’d had his family and slowly the number of people he cared about had started to grow. Now it included not just his family but also Allison, Ben, Davina, the teenagers who had ended up getting caught up in his brother’s ritual, Tatia, Ares and Olivia. The last one had caught him by surprise a little as the two of them had been friends even before they both arrived in Mystic Falls but since they had started spending more time together it had started to grow into something more than that and that was enough to make Henrik nervous. It had been easier before when he had just been doing what Crowley had asked because other than the King of Hell himself he hadn’t had anyone that he cared about enough to not want to lose. Now he had a lot of people to fight for and Olivia was right at the top of that list. He had never told her any of this and the truth was that he wasn’t sure he was ready to but he also knew that he couldn’t keep on lying to her the way he had been. He would always be her friend, of that he was certain, but despite the flirty banter that always seemed to pass back and forth between them he had never been completely honest with her about what she meant to him and considering what world they lived in he knew just how easy it was to have a life cut short before those words were spoken. It had happened for Elijah and Tatia, they had been happy together but they had been torn apart long before they should have been before they had had the chance to do even half of the things that they should have done and he didn’t want to fall into that same trap with Olivia. He had already died once and she had already lost one love after her husband died and if anything happened and he didn’t tell her then he wasn’t sure that he would be able to forgive himself. Of course just the thought of telling her was enough to fill him with fear considering he had no idea how she truly felt either but even if things were awkward between them for a while before they went back to normal he knew that that was much better than not saying anything. This was unchartered territory for Henrik, even though he had been born a thousand years ago he had never found himself in this position before but he knew that sooner or later he was going to have to work up the courage to say something otherwise he was going to regret it. “I’m sure,” he chuckled. It had been bad enough growing up with five older siblings at times so he couldn’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like for Olivia growing up with over twice that amount. He was still in the process of reconnecting with his siblings now, he and Elijah were living together and he was in the process of making things right with Rebekah but he still had yet to reveal himself to Niklaus and he also needed to undagger Kol and Finn so he knew that he still had a long way to go but he had time for that. “I can believe that,” he grinned as she said that Remi would tell him that she was the best boss in the world. “When can I start?” He knew that Elijah probably didn’t mind supporting him considering that the family had amassed a lot of money over the years but he didn’t want to have to rely on his family for that for too long so the sooner he was able to start on his own two feet the better. The kiss was impulsive and it was something that Henrik knew he might well end up regretting if Olivia said she didn’t think of him like that after all but in that moment he had been unable to stop himself and she didn’t push him away so he hoped that perhaps he hadn’t read things between them wrong after all. “Incredible,” he breathed, letting his forehead rest against hers for a moment before she moved back a little and her teasing comment caused his cheeks to flush red. “It might have been,” he said as he brought his free hand up and rubbed the back of his neck before lowering his gaze, immediately embarrassed by that fact. Things had been so different when he was growing up and it hadn’t been the done thing at all. Even after he was brought back there hadn’t been time for distractions like that but now he was free to do what he wanted although he still wasn’t sure whether she felt the same. “Sorry if I overstepped.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

’You never know what the future’s going to hold, you just have to have faith that you’ll make your way through whatever comes.’ Florence Ashby had been a straight-forward woman. Not educated past the age of thirteen, married at eighteen and the mother of eleven children at the age of 43. She’d been widowed that very year and had found herself with yet another mouth to feed within twelve months. While she might have been seen as nothing more than a housewife by some, the old woman in the shoe by others, Olivia had known that her mother was incredible. To have still been on her feet after all that she had been left to deal with on her own had been amazing enough but to know what you were already facing and to take in an abandoned child anyway had been unthinkable. That inner strength had always been something that she’d strived to have for herself but when George had died Olivia knew that she’d gone to pieces. She could have gone back to the village afterwards, once the friends she’d had there who had survived the hunters’ visit had assured her it was safe but Olivia knew that the life she’d had there was over. George had been her best friend, her husband, her home, without him the only thing it seemed she could do was remain on the move. It had kept her clear of other hunters that she knew had to be working out there and keeping the world safe, but it hadn’t been any sort of life. Each time she’d moved she’d left her friends, her home, as much as she’d had any in that time, behind. After she’d met Henrik it had seemed like he was something else she’d been leaving behind, the thought of which had hurt in a way it hadn’t in a long time. Maybe the future would’ve had their paths crossing again some point but it had been far from a certainty. Olivia would’ve admitted that perhaps her faith hadn’t been as strong as it might’ve been but in the end it hadn’t mattered, when she’d finally found somewhere to really call home, a place to put down roots, Henrik had somehow been right there.
Having fallen into one another’s orbit again it had been no wonder that Henrik had started to spend time hanging out here at the bar. He and Ares had become two of her most reliable customers, although the pit of her stomach didn’t start spewing out butterflies in the same way when it was Ares she saw swaggering in through the front door. Her feelings towards Henrik weren’t just friendly, no matter close the two had gotten in that way. Joking with him over their siblings had felt good but the sudden notion of having him working beside her had taken things in a more serious direction no matter how much she was joking about it. Her hand still over Henrik’s, Olivia shot him a grin back. ”I end up with all my employees wrapped around my little finger eventually,” she bragged playfully. Tilting her head slightly, she considered for a moment. ”Tomorrow if you really want. Remi’s here from the afternoon onwards, it means there’ll be two people around to show you the ropes.” Having seen the way he was with people she didn’t doubt he’d pick things up quickly. That impression was only cemented as their trip upstairs turned in a direction she hadn’t expected. Olivia would have been lying if she’d said she hadn’t considered this, but she hadn’t worked up the nerve. She should have done, she thought, feeling the butterflies erupt into full flight at his breathy word. Her eyes slipped shut for a moment as she let out a breath of her own. Then she was smiling, drawing back just far enough to catch his cheeks flush a hot red at her words. Reaching out, Olivia set her glass down and then raised her hand up to brush her fingers over some of that heat. ”If it was then it’s even more incredible,” she told him honestly. Olivia eased in as his apology came, rising slightly on her toes to touch her lips to each scarlet cheek, then each corner of his mouth before her hand touched his jaw, encouraging his eyes up to meet hers. ”If you had overstepped, you’d have been on your ass, not about to receive this,” she promised. It was her hand that curled around the back of his neck now, drawing his mouth back down to hers, taking that step of faith she hadn’t been brave enough to take first.

For a long time after he was brought back Henrik had felt sure that he had missed his chance at having a normal life. It had taken him a long time to build up the courage to finally break away from Crowley but finding his family again had given him the strength to do just that. After learning what had happened to his siblings because of the decision that he had made all those years ago he had felt sure that he didn’t deserve the chance to be happy, after all his siblings had been turned into vampires against their will and so many lives had been lost at their hands, but he was doing what he could to try and at least atone for some of the wrongs that had been committed after he died so he hoped that he was at least a little on his way to redemption. It was strange even now to think how one decision could change everything not just for him but for so many people around him as well. He had been just a child back then, one who had been curious to see whether the rumours about the men who turned into wolves every time the moon was full were true, and he never could have predicted all of the harm that would end up being caused because he had decided to sneak out and see it happen rather than hiding as he had every other month throughout the course of his life. He had convinced Niklaus to go with him but he knew that his brother had only been indulging him. From what Elijah had told him his brother had carried that guilt around with him for a long time and Henrik had a feeling that he had probably felt the brunt of their father’s anger because of it as well, but it truly hadn’t been his fault because Henrik knew that he would have gone even if he hadn’t managed to talk Nik into going with him. Had he refused then there was every chance that he might have tried to talk Lukas or one of his other friends into going with him, or he might have decided to go alone so no matter what the outcome would have been the same as nothing would have deterred him once he had made up his mind. Now Henrik carried the weight of that decision and the weight of everything that had happened since around on his shoulders and he hadn’t even thought that he would have time for anything else to develop while he was trying to make up for that but Olivia had taken him by surprise. She had become a friend to him the first time they met but since she too moved to Mystic Falls they had started getting even closer. Now he seemed to spend so much time at the bar just so that he would have an excuse to be around her and he was sure that she would have noticed by now. He wasn’t a big drinker and he never had been but he loved the atmosphere and he couldn’t deny that the way Olivia always made sure to make time for him when he was there was enough to make him wonder if perhaps she thought of him the same. They were friends and they had been for quite some time but Henrik knew now that it was more than that on his part at least and even though the thought of having someone else that he loved and could so easily lose the way Olivia had already lost George scared him, the truth was that the thought of not being honest with her and seeing if it wasn’t a one sided thing after all only to one day find that he had missed his chance scared him even more. “That doesn’t surprise me. I won’t be any different, I’m already wrapped around your finger,” he chuckled. He knew that it was true, he and Olivia had already been through so much together when they met before so he knew that if she ever needed him then he would be there in an instant, especially now that she had the bracelet he had given her to warn her when danger was coming and give her an easy way of contacting him. As she said that he could start tomorrow if he wanted, Henrik nodded. “I’ll be here,” he assured her, glad that he was finally going to have something more to do with his time. He had always been the kind of person who picked things up pretty quickly but the truth was that he was eager to learn anyway so he was looking forward to it. Henrik knew that Olivia had only been teasing him when she had asked if it was his first kiss but there was truth to his words and it reminded him even more just how much more experience she had with this kind of thing. He knew that for her there had only ever been her husband, that was something that she had told him before, but even though he was born centuries before her there was still so much that he had yet to experience and until that moment his first kiss was one of them. “It was,” he conceded, leaning into her touch a little as she brushed her fingers over his cheek. He knew that he shouldn’t feel so embarrassed, after all Olivia knew about his past and what he had been through, but he hadn’t felt like this before so he had nothing to compare it to whereas Olivia did and he wasn’t sure whether he could ever match up to what George had been to her. The kisses she placed to his cheeks followed by each corner of his mouth were enough to take him by surprise but as she tilted his head up he didn’t offer any resistance and let his gaze meet hers. Before he could even completely process the words she had said her hand was on the back of his neck and her lips were on his and he quickly set his drink down before letting one hand rest against her cheek as the other fell to her waist, pulling her closer to him as he kissed her back. “I’d hoped there was a chance that you liked me too but I wasn’t sure if you would want this,” he said as he reluctantly pulled back to catch his breath, pretty sure that she would know why he had been worried. The life that had been waiting for her before war had been declared had never been one that Olivia had really wanted. Girls, especially ones from her neck of the woods, didn’t get to go to university to study, they didn’t get to forge lives of their own. Girls in her neck of the woods were expected to work their fingers to the bone as seamstresses or shop girls, like she’d once done. The moment the right man came along and swept you off of your feet you expected to settle down and be a housewife, filling that house with happy little kids. Olivia knew that quite a few of her sisters were happy to do that and both Jack and Teddy were looking forward to the day when their sisters were all settled and happy and they could finally strike out to build their own lives knowing their mum and sisters would be taken care of. She’d been the fly in the ointment, even if they hadn’t exactly said that. All she’d wanted to do was use her brain, not let it rot, the rest … well, that hadn’t held a great deal of appeal until George had come along and even then Olivia knew she wouldn’t have explored where that had started to go if the war hadn’t come to an end and George’s time in England had suddenly been growing short. That deadline had made them both realise that they didn’t want what was happening between them to end, even if for her it meant leaving behind all that she had known. They hadn’t known there would be another deadline then, not really. Obviously death claimed everything in the end but with George having turned off his aging and her being prepared to do the same, that time had seemed like it would be far in the future.
It hadn’t been. That loss had crippled her for a time but if it had shown her one thing, you couldn’t let things slip away. No matter what it took to get them, to keep them, it was worth it. With the bar it certainly had been, this move to Mystic Falls proving to be the best thing she had done in those decades since George had died. She hadn’t found the words to tell Lauren or Nick or Henrik just how fiercely she’d fight to keep this, to keep them yet, but the fire was certainly there in the pit of her stomach. Along with another sort of heat that Henrik had proved capable of constantly stoking. There was warmth in her face as she studied him, her head tilting, brown eyes narrowing playfully. ”Oh really?” she asked keenly. ”I might just have to take advantage of that from time to time.” With him working at the bar from tomorrow onwards she could honestly do that, but she wouldn’t. ”I’ll be sure to have your apron ready,” she promised. Henrik starting work at the bar tomorrow was slipping to the back of her mind as the night cap became something very different to what she’d first imagined. The two of them had been honest with each other before, right from the very start, but despite all that she’d learned about him Olivia had never imagined that she was going to be Henrik’s first kiss. ”It’s understandable,” she said, empathizing. ”There wasn’t a whole lot of room for this before, was there?” Not when he had died so young and Crowley had gotten his hands on him like he had. There was room now though, they had room and God, she wanted to take it. Wanted to soothe feelings she’d hurt she kissed his blushing cheeks, the corners of his lips, his mouth. She gave him room to draw back if he wasn’t ready for this … but he was. Olivia smiled into the kiss as she heard Henrik set his drink down and felt herself drawn closer to him. Her lips stayed curved as he eased back for breath, her hazel eyes opening slowly to meet his. ”Honestly, I wasn’t sure how to put what I felt into words. It’s been so long … and after George I wasn’t sure I’d ever be ready again but you’ve got a way of wrapping people around your little finger too. I’m wrapped pretty tight.” Her arm slipped up around his neck in demonstration, the fingers that had been on his jaw dropping to his collar to draw him back towards the couch with her.
