It had taken a while to get over everything that had happened during the ritual but as it so often did life went on in Mystic Falls and Tatia had never expected it to be any other way. She had warned Lukas in advance of the decision she had made to hand herself over to Niklaus instead of Elena doing so but she had never for one moment thought that he and Henrik would be able to bring all of them back. Not a day went by that she wasn’t grateful to the two of them for doing that, they had given not just her but Grace and Riley the chance to live their lives the way they should have been able to all along. They couldn’t undo the fact that Grace had been turned into a vampire in order to complete the ritual and Tatia hadn’t actually seen the girl since but she hoped that she was doing ok. As for Riley, the two of them had kept in touch and still met up regularly to hang out and see how the other was doing so something good had come of it at least. There no longer seemed to be a divide between Riley’s friends and hers the way there had been before the ritual, it had brought them all together and she hoped that it would stay that way. With Niklaus away from Mystic Falls searching for a way to make more hybrids, they had all been free to move on with their lives. Tatia had been spending as much time with Elijah, Lukas and her friends as she could and she knew that Stefan and Elena had been making the most of the peace while it lasted as well. Rebekah had been freed from her coffin by Henrik and Riley’s pack all seemed to be doing well too so she knew that she really couldn’t have hoped for any more than that. She knew that it wouldn’t last, Nik was bound to return to Mystic Falls sooner or later she only hoped that when he did her friends wouldn’t be caught in the crossfire again. They all deserved the chance to live out normal lives, none of them had asked to be drawn into the supernatural world the way they had been but they also couldn’t change what had happened so she knew that they just had to take care and look out for each other as best they could. That day she had arranged to meet a friend at the Grill but even as she pushed open the door she knew that she was quite early. Looking around the room she wasn’t at all surprised to see that her friend was nowhere in sight but it wasn’t long before her gaze came to rest on a familiar figure and her breath caught in her throat. Elijah had warned her that Nik would return sooner or later but she hadn’t heard that he was back and yet the figure sitting at the bar was unmistakeable. She knew that it would be safer to turn around and walk away but even after everything that had happened she still believed that there was good in Niklaus. He had given her the chance to back out moments before he was due to complete the ritual and it had been her decision not to take that offer of mercy. Instead she had been one of the sacrifices and she knew that she had to find out what his plans were now if she could. It was with that in mind that she took a moment to compose herself before heading straight for the bar. “I didn’t think we’d be seeing you back here so soon. Are you still not having any luck creating more hybrids?” she asked as she sat down next to him. In a crowded place she knew he wouldn’t try anything, not if he wanted to stay in town without drawing too much attention to himself, and as far as Nik knew she was dead so she knew that it was worth a shot to try and get him to fill her in. Tatia knew that the ritual could have easily gone very differently, Niklaus had been adamant that he wanted to use Elena to free his werewolf side but she had known that she couldn’t let the other girl die at his hands. Elena had been so good to her since she had arrived in Mystic Falls and Tatia had known that she just wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if anything happened to the girl. She had taken Elena’s place in the ritual and that still affected her now despite the brave face that she tried to put on when she was around the others. She was doing much better than she had been at the start of the summer but there were still times when she closed her eyes and saw Niklaus feeding from her once more. Having Elijah next to her while she slept helped, whenever she woke up from a nightmare she was able to lose herself in his embrace and that was something that she had found herself relying on a lot over the last few months. It was strange to think that it had taken them such a long time to get back together but now they were she knew that nothing was going to tear them apart again. She was safe with Elijah and that was something that she knew better than to take for granted. She had felt sure that she would hear when Niklaus decided to return to Mystic Falls, she had always known that it was inevitable but she had never thought that she would just end up running into him at the Grill like she had done although in a way she knew that it was perhaps the best place that it could have happened. At least there they were surrounded by people and she knew that even Niklaus wouldn’t be bold enough to try something in front of so many people. She had been lucky that Henrik and Lukas had given her another chance at life when they brought her back and she hoped that she wasn’t tempting fate but Niklaus was someone she still cared about even now and she knew that she had to see how he was doing and, if she could, perhaps even figure out what he might be up to. It was with that in mind that she made her way over and she felt a smile touch her lips as Nik spoke. “The fact that you’re here drinking alone like this is enough of a hint but Stefan might have mentioned something,” she said, for now knowing that it would probably be best if she didn’t reveal who she actually was just yet. “You’ve never been one to give up, what happened?”NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

Tatia knew that it probably would have been best to avoid Nik that evening but even after everything that had happened she still couldn’t shake the fact that she still cared about him. It had been her choice to be a part of the ritual so that Elena would be spared and Nik had seemed conflicted about actually going through with it. He had given her the chance to back out before he completed the ritual but she had stood her ground and she had made peace with the fact that she was going to die on her own terms that time. She hadn’t known that Henrik and Lukas would bring her and the others that Nik had used as sacrifices during the ritual back to life and, it seemed, neither had he since he had immediately assumed that she was Elena. Before handing herself over to Nik she had made Elijah and Lukas both promise that they would respect her decision to ensure that Elena lived and they had done that by not standing in her way but Lukas had had something else up his sleeve and she was grateful to him for that. She knew just how precious life was and the fact that she had been brought back twice already was something that she knew better than to take for granted. She wanted to enjoy whatever time she had with the people she loved but in order to do that she needed to know what Nik had planned next. She knew that there was little that she would be able to do if the people she cared about were going to end up finding themselves in danger but that didn’t mean that she wasn’t going to try and make sure that they were all safe after everything they had done for her. “How would it have been easier?” she asked, genuinely curious as to Nik’s mindset right now after months of trying to find a way to create more hybrids only to end up failing with each attempt. The Nik she had known hadn’t liked not being able to do things and she knew that she wouldn’t be surprised if that hadn’t changed now considering he had waited centuries for another doppelganger to come along after Katherine had thwarted his plan. “You’ll have to ask him that yourself,” she shrugged as Nik asked what Stefan had told her. She didn’t think that he had said anything that would cause him any trouble but she knew better than to get in the middle of whatever was going on between Nik and Stefan. She knew that Stefan’s memories of Nik and Rebekah had been wiped a long time ago and had only returned to him not long before he and Nik went on their road trip but she got the impression that Nik still had a soft spot for the younger Salvatore. Looking around them for a moment, for once Tatia was glad that there were plenty of people around. It meant that Nik couldn’t lash out without making things more difficult for himself and the vervain she ingested each day meant that he couldn’t compel her to do anything either so in that respect at least she knew that she was safe for the time being. “Judging by your expression when I walked in it looked like you still hadn’t had much luck figuring out what you have been missing and you looked a little fed up,” she explained. She didn’t know why what Nik had been trying wasn’t working but she knew that it had to be frustrating for him and she couldn’t help but feel bad not just for him about that but also about the unnecessary amount of lives that had been lost as a result. “Are you any closer to figuring out why it isn’t working?”NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

There was a time when Tatia’s biggest concern was how she was going to handle being a single mother in a village where everyone around her thought that she should have followed her husband onto his funeral pyre but those days were long gone. Lukas had given her the strength to carry on then and now she was able to draw strength from those around her. When she had handed herself over to Niklaus so that he would use her in the ritual instead of Elena she had accepted her fate safe in the knowledge that it would mean that Elena would get to live. The girl had done so much for her and everything that had happened with Nik’s family had started with her blood a thousand years ago so it had only seemed right that his curse should end in the same way. Ever since she was brought back Tatia had felt like she was living on borrowed time and considering that she had died and been brought back once already she had known that there was no way she would have been able to live with herself if Elena was used instead so she knew that things had worked out the way that they were supposed to. The fact that she had been brought back for a second time had come as a surprise to Tatia but she knew now that she should have realised that Lukas wouldn’t let her go so easily. He and Henrik had made sure that she and the others used in the ritual were all brought back and she knew that she didn’t want to waste the chance to live her life that she had been given. A part of her knew that it would have been wise to stay away from Nik but he had made it clear to her during the ritual when he had given her the chance to back out at the last minute that he still cared and the truth was that she still cared about him too so she had known that she’d had to reach out when she saw him. She had found herself becoming genuinely curious when he had said that it would have been easier if he had used Elena in the ritual instead and for a moment she wondered if he might open up a little about why he had given her the chance to back out even when everything else had already been in place but instead the reason he gave was his fight with Elijah and that was enough to make Tatia study him carefully for a moment, looking for any chink that might be in his armour. “Some people do monstrous things but I don’t believe that you are a monster or that your family see you as a bastard. If you truly were a monster then you wouldn’t have hesitated during the ritual and Mikael might not have been your biological father but to your siblings you will always be their brother,” she said at last. That was something that she knew to be true for Elijah and Henrik at least and she wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was the same for Rebekah and Kol too. Despite their differences they were still family and the fact that Nik only shared one biological parent with them didn’t really matter. The Nik sat before her was different to the one that she had known in some ways, after all he had used two complete strangers as sacrifices to free his werewolf side, but he had shown remorse when he had offered to have Elena take her place so she refused to believe that he was beyond hope. “I do believe that your family means a lot to you but just because people don’t tend to see you in a good light that doesn’t mean that you have to prove them right,” she added. That would only ever add fuel to the fire but she knew that perhaps that was what Nik wanted at times. “Something awful was done to you and you wanted to put that right but now things can be different if you want them to be.”Watching as Nik pushed his glass away before putting some money down on the bar, Tatia didn’t flinch as he placed his hand on her shoulder and leaned in close. She knew that Elena or even Katherine might have done but even after everything the truth was that Tatia still saw glimmers of the Nik that she had grown to love in him all those years ago and she just couldn’t bring herself to truly fear that Nik. Nodding as he confirmed that he still had yet to figure out what had been going wrong during his quest to create hybrids, the truth was that Tatia wasn’t surprised. After what Stefan had told her about the time they had spent travelling together she had suspected as much as Nik’s next words were enough to make a half smile tug at the corner of her mouth. “I’m not the girl you think I am, Nik,” she said, knowing full well that if there was anything that would tip him off as to who she really was then it would be that. Life was so much easier before Tatia died but she knew that she couldn’t go back and change what had happened so all she could do was try and make the best of the way that her life had turned out. She had once thought that she and Elijah would end up getting married and raise Lukas together, even having a few more children later on down the road, but the turn that their lives had taken couldn’t be any further from that vision now. Lukas had been forced to grow up without either of his parents after she died and Elijah had spent a thousand years living on his own as a vampire. She knew that there had been some women who had caught his attention during that time but nothing had worked out for him until now and even though she had wanted him to be happy, in a way she knew that that was a good thing because it had meant that they’d been able to find their way back to one another. Now it was the future that Tatia was unsure of, Elijah would continue to look the same while she continued to grow older and it would be the same for Lukas. Most of the people she loved would stay the same and that was something that she had been thinking about a lot lately but she had yet to decide anything so she just wanted to try and make it through the rest of the school year in one piece. How Stefan did this over and over again she wasn’t sure, she could only assume that it would get easier over time, but for now senior year was proving difficult and she was putting as much work into getting through it as she could. In hindsight talking to Nik probably wasn’t the best idea after everything that had happened but Tatia still cared about him and that was something that she knew wasn’t going to change no matter what happened. The Nik sat next to her now was so different to the one she used to know but there were still parts of that Nik in him, she had to believe that. He had still cared enough to give her the chance to change her mind even after two thirds of the ritual had already been completed and she knew that he wouldn’t have done that if there wasn’t still some good inside of him. She hadn’t corrected him when he had assumed that she was Elena but she wasn’t trying to hide who she was from him, in fact she couldn’t shake the feeling that it would be a relief if he knew the truth. She had never liked lying and with Nik after everything he had been through she knew that he deserved the truth so she had been dropping subtle hints as the conversation had gone on but so far he hadn’t given any indication that he had figured it out although she knew that it was only a matter of time. Had she just come out and said it then she wasn’t sure that he would have believed her anyway, after all it could have just been Elena or Katherine trying to play a trick on him, so deep down she knew that it was better this way. “You say that like feeling something is a bad thing,” Tatia observed. She knew that Nik might think that it was but as far as she was concerned there really wasn’t any point in living if it meant doing so without feeling anything. She had died twice already for people she loved and she knew that she would do so again if she had to. Tatia was a firm believer of the fact that love made a person stronger but she knew that not everyone felt that way and she respected that. As Nik finally said her name rather than Elena’s, Tatia nodded. “I was wondering how long it would take,” she admitted before her eyes widened in surprise at his next question. “I’ve arranged to meet Elijah here soon but I was early and believe it or not I still care about you so I wanted to see how you were,” she explained before feeling herself pulled to her feet as Nik’s grip on her arm tightened. “Nik, let go!” she exclaimed, struggling to free herself from his grip as she did so. “Believe what you want but I never lied to you, I simply didn’t correct you when you thought I was Elena,” she corrected. “Can you honestly tell me that you would have believed me if I’d walked up to you and told you who I really was?” she asked, knowing all too well what the answer to that question was going to be. Twice before they had made the mistake of believing they could finally spend their lives, or at least a good portion of their eternal years settled in one place. Twice before they had been naïve, trusting that they could remain under the radar of those around them indefinitely, twice before they had truly started to live, pushing the thought of Mikael’s pursuit to the back of their minds, twice before he had started to feel something for those around them again and twice before Elijah had found the life he had been building, the lives they had been building, crumbling down around him like rotten mortar. Perhaps in a way that had been what they had built with, the foundation they had laid all of that upon then shoddily built, their foundation unstable from the very start. It would have been easy to blame time and proximity for that, tempers growing fractious as Mikael’s loathing gaze continued to seek them out but it was just as much a matter of personality as circumstances. Elijah never would have denied that he loved his siblings but after more than a dozen human lifespans spent tied together by a vow they made never knowing how long their flight would be every slight was blown out of proportion. Paranoia crept it, the finger of blame automatically aiming in all directions. None of them had wanted to admit their own part in their joined misery, it was a universal truth and always had been that people were keen to lay the blame on others. In a way he imagined he was no different, he had allowed Esther to shoulder the blame for Tatia’s death for centuries but in the last year and a half he had come to accept his failings.
If only he could talk Niklaus into doing the same now they might have a chance to bury the hatchet and not the dagger. Dark eyes studied every face on the street as he existed the front door of his building, seeking out the one he had failed to find anywhere since his brother had returned to town. Even Kol had been tracked down eventually but Niklaus had remained conspicuously absent. Undoubtedly Niklaus had his own schedule for all of this, one intimately connected with the army he had been trying to build for himself. There had been continued failure there, werewolf packs decimated as his brother had time and time again tried to recreate others in his image. Elijah’s jaw flexed as he slipped hands into the pockets of the overcoat he wore. How long would it be before his brother turned his avaricious gaze in the direction of those wolves here in Mystic Falls? In the direction of the young wolf who only lived now because Henrik and Lukas had drawn upon their power to bring back all of those used in the ritual to break the bonds Esther had placed on Niklaus. Not long enough. The words burned bitterly on Elijah’s tongue as he approached the Grill. He couldn’t allow his thoughts to linger on such dark matters, at least not when he had arrived to meet Tatia.
The highlight of his day, he thought as he pushed through the front door of Mystic Falls’ dining and drinking mecca. She had been the biggest blessing of what his brother and her son had managed to do that day. A third chance for them, one he had no intention of letting anybody take from the two of them. A quick glance through the glass was enough to have a heart that no longer beat wedging like a rock in his throat. Elijah was cautious as he pushed the door open, not wanting to turn the restaurant into ground zero for the airing of his family’s dirty laundry but he moved across the room with an elegant speed. One hand grabbed for his brother’s upper arm even as the other settled proprietarily at the base of Tatia’s spine. ”I would advise you to remove your hands from her brother,” he said coolly, his words clipped as they emerged through gritted teeth. ”If any lies were spoken to they came from your own tarnished tongue.” Concern filled Elijah’s eyes as they cut to Tatia, his throat working as he swept his gaze over her, looking for any harm he might not have arrived early enough to prevent. ”Has he hurt you?” Tatia had always preached to him that the boy he had known was still inside of his brother somewhere but the more he saw of Niklaus’ behavior now the less of that boy he could see.

Tatia had thought about telling Nik who she was straight away but after everything that had happened the truth was that she hadn’t thought that he would believe her anyway. There were others in Mystic Falls who looked just like her and being brought back from the dead wasn’t something that tended to happen very often. Tatia was fortunate in that she had now been brought back for a second time but she knew better than to try her luck for a third shock resurrection. She didn’t want to tempt fate but seeing Nik sat alone at the Grill she had been unable to resist talking to him. She had arrived early for her meal with Elijah and after everything that had happened with the ritual she wanted to see how Nik was doing. She knew that it couldn’t have been easy for him to live with a part of himself locked away for a thousand years and she didn’t blame him for wanting to free that side of him she just wished that it hadn’t come at the expense of other innocent lives. Thankfully Riley and Grace had both been brought back to life too but she knew that it was probably safer for the time being if Nik didn’t know about that. While it was true that she trusted him not to hurt her she wasn’t so sure when it came to others and she knew that it wasn’t worth the risk. As Nik spoke, Tatia found herself studying him carefully for a moment. “It doesn’t have to be that way. You still have your family and I know you feel like the odd one out sometimes but they’ll always be there for you if you let them. They love you,” she said gently. Tatia knew that it didn’t make a difference to Elijah that Nik was his half brother and she knew that Henrik didn’t care either, they both loved him regardless and so did she. He had never been very good at letting people get close to him and it seemed that his struggles with that had grown over the years but now things were different. Elijah, Henrik and Nik were all in Mystic Falls and she was too. She refused to give up on Nik and she knew that the boys wouldn’t either so she didn’t want him to go giving up on himself. Letting Nik know who she was was the right thing to do but Tatia hadn’t expected the reaction that came from him. It was shock that had had her trying to twist out of his grip, that and uncertainty over what he was going to do, but as he spoke she could hear the hurt in his voice and she knew that she perhaps should have handled things differently. She had promised Henrik that she wouldn’t tell Nik who had brought her back until he was ready to talk to Nik himself but now Nik was hurting and she had never wanted to be the cause of that. “I didn’t use that love against you Nik, I never would,” she said, keeping her voice as calm as she could. “I know you would never hurt me willingly, otherwise you wouldn’t have given me the chance to back out on the ritual at the last moment. You can say what you want but I have always been in your corner Nik because I still love you. You’re family and I don’t turn my back on family,” she said, knowing that that at least was something that he would hopefully be able to understand. She might not be in love with Nik like she was with Elijah but she still considered him to be family and he would always be important to her. It wasn’t much longer before Elijah arrived and she placed a hand gently on his arm. “Don’t worry Elijah. What Nik said is true, he would never hurt me,” Tatia assured him gently. “I simply wanted to see how Nik was doing after the ritual and I didn’t think he would believe that I wasn’t one of my doppelgangers playing a trick on him if I told him who I really was so I didn’t correct him when he thought I was Elena,” she explained. It had never been her intention to upset Nik, Katherine was known for pretending to be Elena and she honestly hadn’t thought that he would have believed her if she had told him the truth but in hindsight she realised now that perhaps she should have tried after all. The universe had continued to turn after they had been turned by Esther. Round and round, years moving on and their lives stretching out in front of them. An endless string of days that should’ve carried them away from where they had been but despite their supposed best efforts they had barely moved on from where they were. Elijah had hoped that this fresh start for them in Mystic Falls would be just that. A second, third, chance for them all, but seeing Niklaus’ hands on Tatia, tight and biting, as he’d arrived at the Grill for their lunch had proven that round and round had been an apt description. None of them had ever escaped the vicious circle their lives had been snarled into from the moment of their birth. They’d all had the impression of it, breaking away at times to pursue their own agendas, to stretch their wings but when it had come down to it they had all ended up back here … in the tiny melting pot that was Mystic Falls. Still bickering with one another, seeing betrayals within their own blood. Fighting over the girl they had both loved, almost more than once in his case.
With the rising heat in the pit of his stomach erasing any empathy that had started to re-emerge from his brother, Elijah had hurried towards them. It usually took something incredible to crack the icy cool surface but on occasion Niklaus had known to put chinks in it. This was more than a chink though, the sound of Tatia’s voice rising sending those cracks shooting through him at what should’ve been an alarming rate. Over the years Niklaus’ peculiar brand of love had grown darker, faintly more twisted, but this was beyond that. Far enough beyond the line they’d unconsciously drawn between them since Niklaus had returned to town. Trying to batten down his own scalding rush of temper Elijah let his fingers bite into his brother’s arm and the icy tone of his own words bite into his tongue. ”Now,” Elijah ordered a split second ahead of Niklaus’ snarl. His brother bided his words though, his hand falling away from Tatia’s, pulling free of his grip. Hard brown eyes held his brother’s as Tatia settled a hand on his arm gently, the cooling influence on him as she had always been. ”That was far from a lie big enough to have him laying hands upon you that way,” he murmured to her, not tearing his eyes from his brother and those thin lips hissing out words that threatened to send them tumbling towards an argument that would eclipse anything else going on in the Grill. ”For all that he loved you he should’ve been glad to see you alive, not losing his head over not being corrected.” Never would he have said that he could still see the boy his brother had been in him in this way but Elijah could see a stroppy child now, throwing his toys from his stroller because things hadn’t gone exactly as he wanted them.
Or as he had seen them with those glasses on that lent everything about him a bitter edge. Had they kept the truth from him? Undoubtedly, all in the name of protecting those who hadn’t done anything to deserve their slaughter in the ritual, those whose lives and long futures had been snatched away from them. Drawing in a quick breath, Elijah reached for Tatia’s wrist gently, turning her arm as though he could see the flesh beneath her clothes. He didn’t need x-ray vision to guess that bruises would be rising from that grip later. ”You’d never hurt her but you were bodily dragging her out of here when I arrived … you killed her…” The last few words were hissed, his narrowed eyes skittering around them at those paying more attention to the knot of people than their meals. ”Considering that you washed your hands of me when I tried to prevent you from killing the woman I loved and others in this town, the notion that I have been lying to you since is an interesting one Niklaus.” Elijah swallowed hard, his throat working as he allowed his fingers to trail down to tangle with Tatia’s softly. ”Why don’t we adjourn somewhere else and stop washing our family’s dirty laundry in public? Perhaps then you can tell me just what lies I’ve been telling you and what you were planning on doing when you dragged Tatia out of here if it wasn’t to hurt her.” It didn’t take a genius to suspect that his brother would try and pick apart had a woman he had killed had been returned to life and just what influence that might’ve had on all those werewolves he had tried to turn in to his ever loyal little army.

Tatia hadn’t known how Nik would react to the fact that she was alive once more and that was why she had decided to keep her true identity a secret from him to begin with. She hadn’t been spying on him for herself or for Elijah, she had merely wanted to see how he was doing now that he finally had what he had wanted for so long. She had wanted to see whether he was happy but from what she could see even now he still wasn’t. He had unlocked the part of himself that had been locked away for a thousand years but that still wasn’t enough. She knew Nik well enough to know that he had always struggled within his family, after all he had been the one to incur their father’s wrath worst of all, and she could only imagine what it must have been like for him to learn that after all that Mikael wasn’t truly his father after all. She knew that it had probably changed something in Nik but she also knew that the good man that she had known back when he was human before all of this became their lives was still in there somewhere. She had seen it when he had given her the chance to change her mind just before the ritual started and she often found herself urging Elijah not to give up on his brother. Nik often did the wrong thing but none of them were perfect and most of the time he had a good reason for the things he did even if there were times when the only person who benefitted from that reason was himself. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind about how he would be towards her, though. She still believed that he would never hurt her and she hoped that in time Elijah would see that too. “I’m fine Elijah, there is no need to worry,” Tatia assured him, slipping her hand into his and giving it a gentle squeeze. The last thing she wanted was for the two of them to fall out over something like that. She couldn’t blame Nik for being angry, perhaps she should have been honest with him from the start but she hadn’t thought that he would be honest with her if he knew that she wasn’t really Elena. Sometimes it was easier to open up to a stranger than it was to someone you cared about and even though she didn’t know whether or not Nik did still care about her it had still seemed easier to get him to open up to her before telling him who she really was. Letting Elijah turn her arm so that he could see where Nik had gripped her, Tatia shook her head as he said that Nik had killed her. “Nik’s right Elijah, that was my choice,” she said gently. “Either Elena or I had to be a part of the ritual and I wasn’t going to let it be her. That isn’t on Nik, that was my choice and I would make the same one again to protect someone I care about.” That was something she was certain of, Elena had become family to her and there was no way that she was going to let an innocent girl die to break a curse that had started with her blood a thousand years ago. She cherished the chance that she had been given at living again but she knew that she would never forgive herself if another had to die in her place so that she could carry on living. As Nik spoke again she could hear the hurt in his voice and her expression softened. “Elijah asked me to do no such thing Nik. I wanted to know how you were and what was going on with you but I didn’t think you would tell me the truth if you knew it was me,” she explained, hoping that he would be able to tell that she was being honest with him. After the ritual his opinion of his brother had slipped to an all time low. In the past, no matter how little others had thought of Niklaus, how much they had condemned him, he had seen the boy his brother had been beneath that hardened surface. Arriving at the Grill now to find his hand wrapped around Tatia’s arm and what he had seen as anger blooming on his face Elijah had felt his regard for his younger brother slipping. First the ritual, performed without an ounce of care for those he was slaughtering. Niklaus may have given Tatia the choice between giving up her own life and Elena being killed but the others had no such option, they had been snatched from the streets by his brother’s witches, kept caged just waiting for the moment when their hearts would be torn out. That was all he’d been able to see as he’d entered. Concern stretched over his features as Tatia assured him. He raised his brows in question, asking if she were sure. Tatia’s words had given him pause, Niklaus too by the looks of things as his growl was cut off but the fact was that harm had still been caused.
Elijah scoffed at Niklaus as he said killing Tatia had been her choice. His brown eyes narrowed, his teeth baring at the sound of the hiss that rolled from Klaus’ teeth, as his eyes shimmered a red they had not been capable of before. ”The choice between letting a young girl who had barely lived die at your hands or offer herself up. That’s not much of a choice brother. You could have stopped. Tatia did what she thought was right but it was a choice she never should have been forced to make.” It could have been enough but for Niklaus it never was. From truly powerless to what they were now, it was not enough, it never had been. Turning Tatia’s arm over he had studied the marks on her skin, his thumb tracing one with a featherlight touch. Elijah canted his head slowly, the muscles beneath his skin twitching in anticipation. ”Because I’m not worthy of an opinion, just of dying at my brother’s hands,” he accused lowly. Dying or spending a thousand years in a coffin, as Finn had. At least in death there would be a release, albeit one he had hoped never to see now that he had Tatia back.
Reigned back in Elijah tried to set all of this aside at least long enough to end up somewhere private. Niklaus was still bitter, his laughter rolling from him as he took a step back. Elijah’s back bristled as he saw Niklaus’ eyes drop to their linked hands. His own laugh was just as bitter when it came in the wake of Tatia’s words. ”You finally decided to come and look me up,” he said, his low tone dripping with disdain. ”You don’t believe that after all this time I wouldn’t come and ask you myself? Not all of us have to rely on the deceptions of a woman to find out what we need to know.” Niklaus’ question almost tore his voice from his throat. Did he think his brother monstrous and cruel? In what he had done since he had come to this town absolutely. Elijah turned, his free hand coming up to splay in the air in front of his brother’s chest. This is not just about what we have destroyed. Do you not think that losing her would hurt me? I suppose not, you didn’t wait around long enough to see those broken by your actions. That is my burden, brother, always seeing what others could not, always standing by your side no matter what you do.” And he would’ve done, no matter what Niklaus had continued to do. Right up until the moment the flame of who Niklaus had been was extinguished.

Choice had been snatched away from them a thousand years ago. In her desperation Esther had condemned them to an eternal hunger, to roam this damned world for an eternity, chased by the man that had made Niklaus childhood a living misery. She had condemned Niklaus to a life without the other half of himself. He had been the one to take Tatia’s life then but now, having seen the light leave her eyes twice, Elijah knew that their mother was the only one to blame for it all. He let his head hang slightly as Tatia explained it had been a choice for her. To him it had not seemed like one at all. His jaw flexed as he looked back up, dark eyes narrowing as Niklaus rolled his eyes. ”You could have avoided the sacrifice altogether. We could have found some other way, brother,” he said, knowing that the older argument would only fall on deaf ears. Elijah swallowed as he glanced aside at Tatia. With no choice would he have done the same. ”You could’ve refused her,” he said darkly. ”I know that you did what you did for Elena.” His voice was hoarse as he spoke to Tatia but free of regret. The girl had not suffered thanks to Tatia’s sacrifice.
As he tried to gentle the wounds Niklaus had left on Tatia’s skin he caught the red flash of his brother’s eyes, the creep of veins beneath them. Ready to do as he’d suggested and fight to what would never be the death thanks to their damnation. ”Not here,” Elijah growled softly. He dipped his head, squeezing Tatia’s hand lightly as Niklaus curled his claws into his own palm, letting his blood splatter the ground. ”I would never ask you to do such a thing,” he murmured to Tatia. She had been dragged into their family business enough. ”Pretend?” Elijah snapped, his voice icy cold as Niklaus compared him to Mikael. Blunt human teeth flashed white as he looked at his brother in disgust. ”There has never any pretend about it. Or anything demeaning. If I had taken after father I wouldn’t have spent a thousand years trying to protect you all from him. I would’ve simply seen you as the monster so many believe you to be.” Instead it had been the opposite, for so long he had clung to the notion that there was still something human, something redeemable about his brother.
That brother was still there, buried beneath the bitterness, still hurting enough to have been stung by what had happened between them. That was proof that the last thousand years hadn’t been wasted. Elijah ignored the scoffing note in Niklaus’ voice for a moment. He tilted his head, cutting out Niklaus’ words for a moment as his eyes met Tatia’s. ”I am sorry that you have had to be witness to all of this. This was not a position I ever would’ve wished to put you in.” Tatia always ended up between the two of them though. As he put a hand up to stop Niklaus his brother was scoffing again. Elijah laughed, shaking his head. ”No, because you never chosen to listen to mine. It has always been about what you’ve wanted, hasn’t it Niklaus?” Once upon a time what he had wanted was Tatia but he choice hadn’t been his younger brother. Niklaus knocked his hand away, driving him back a step as he gripped at his collar. ”So you would slaughter a girl because your heart still ached for the woman you had loved,” he accused. His mouth twisted as he went to scoff at the idea of Niklaus compelling Tatia when she knew her own mind but he was already stepping back, letting go of him. Elijah swallowed, smoothing out his collar. He wanted to reach out and touch her, to apologise for this but Niklaus was ahead of him already. ”Forgive us both?” he asked. Her place never should’ve been as the pawn between them but that was what she had become here for a moment.

Tatia knew that things had always been complicated between the Mikaelson brothers, they had both fallen in love with her and she had fallen in love with them back when they were human but her heart belonged to Elijah and that still hadn’t changed. All she had ever wanted was for the two of them to put their differences aside and make things right and she still hadn’t give up hope that that might happen but the more time that went on the more she found herself worried that something might happen that they just couldn’t come back from. She knew that her part in the ritual had been difficult for Elijah but at the end of the day it had been her decision to make sure that Elena would get to live. She hadn’t thought that she would be given another chance, she hadn’t known that Henrik and Lukas would take it upon themselves to bring back all those who were used in the ritual to free Nik’s werewolf side, but it was a sacrifice that she had still been willing to make so that Elena could live. The way she had seen it the ritual had started with her and that was just how it should end as well. She knew that it had caused a rift between the brothers and that was something that she regretted but now that they were altogether in one place for the first time since Elijah and Nik were human she hoped that they would sort it out. Elijah’s words, however, were enough to make her heart sink and she let her hand rest gently on his arm. “That’s easy to say, Elijah, but neither of us know what it is like to live with a part of ourselves locked away for a thousand years,” she said, her eyes searching his as she spoke. Nik’s werewolf side had been locked away before he had even truly begun to understand it but it had still set him apart from his siblings so she could understand that he had wanted to free that side of himself at long last and she was surprised that Elijah didn’t understand that as well. All she could do was listen to the exchange between the two of them that came next. She wanted to intervene, to tell them that they weren’t so different after all and that they were both doing what they believed in, but she knew that it wasn’t her place to do so. Looking at them now she could see that this was something that had been brewing for some time and she knew better than to get between the two of them when that happened. “There was no pretending, I do care about you Nik,” she assured him, her tone gentle as she let her eyes meet his. She had never stopped caring about him and she never would but he was right when he said that she’d assumed the worst and she was ashamed of that now. This Nik was different to the one she had known before she died, he was different to the one she had danced with at the festival and the one that had kissed her, and even though she still cared about him a part of her had been scared about what would happen if he found out that she was alive not just for herself but for Riley and Grace as well. It had been her decision to take part in the ritual but now that she had died twice she really didn’t want to push her luck and have it happen a third time so she had let him believe that she was Elena and she knew that that was wrong of her. “It’s ok. The two of you needed to have this conversation,” she assured Elijah, knowing that it really had been building beneath the surface for some time. Even as Nik asked if Elijah was going to accuse him of compelling her next Tatia knew that Nik would never do such a thing. Even with everything that had passed between them she still trusted him and she knew that her fear in him had been as misplaced as her fear in Elijah had been when she had realised that he was the one who was responsible for killing her. As they both asked her to forgive them, Tatia’s expression softened and her gaze settled on Nik first. “Only if you can forgive me for not being honest with you earlier. I never should have doubted you and for that I am truly sorry,” she said sincerely. She had been worried about not just her safety but that of the others as well but now she knew that she needn’t have and she really did regret it. Turning to Elijah, she took his hand in hers and gave it a light squeeze. “I do forgive you but this fighting needs to stop, it has gone on long enough. Promise me you’ll try and sort things out rather than let them build up like this again,” she said, looking from Elijah to Nik and back again. She knew that there wasn’t anything that she would be able to do about it if they didn’t but she could still hope that they would heed her words. “You’re brothers and you’ve been on opposing sides for too long already.”NIKLAUS MIKAELSON & ELIJAH MIKAELSON

To even suggest putting off the ritual for a time would have been asking more of his brother than he should’ve done. He had seen what having that side of himself locked away for a thousand years had done to his brother but to have been there on his knees, watching Niklaus tear out the heart of the woman who had only just been brought back to him had torn his own free. Elijah’s throat worked as he nodded his head a single time, his chin dropping as he looked at the hand on his arm. ”Far easier said than done but just for a time…” In the end it hadn’t happened. Five hundred years after his last failed attempt Niklaus had managed to get his hands on the ingredients and witches of enough strength and he had shattered those bonds and taken three lives.
In the grand scheme of things that should have been nothing compared to all of those who had died at their hands over the years but this had been Tatia. Her blood had almost felt as though it were on his hands again. His dark eyes fixed on his brother as he crossed his arms over his chest, shifting his weight. ”You did as she asked, knowing that you would be taking my heart with hers.” He looked sideways at Tatia, then sharply back at Niklaus. ”Not you, Tatia did what she did for a girl who deserved to live.” Unlike Katerina. Five hundred years ago there had been no one to sacrifice themselves for her and what she had been forced to do had set her on a path that had slowly corrupted the sweet girl she had once been.
Getting what his heart desired had not eased Niklaus’ temper, it just raged In red eyes now instead of the once human pale blue or the dark eyes of their hunger. He could have raised a hand, cut his brother off but Taita did that for him, her words making Niklaus curl his hand into a fist instead, dark blood dropping to the street below them. He wasn’t done though, his own tongue losing again with a cold bitterness that his family always seemed to induce in the end. Was it his own words that had Niklaus’ red eyes fading or was it again Tatia? Either way it was her he apologized to, her words that had him swallowing back another apology for Niklaus to scoff over.
His hand batted away, Elijah didn’t so much smile as sneer as Niklaus began to laugh. ”They always have been to you, Niklaus. Would you rather I stopped trying and allowed you all to find your own doom? Tatia made her choice and so did others in bringing her back. If all you can see is suspicion in that then perhaps you have less of a heart left than I believed.” So he knew. A long breath whispered out of him as he studied his brother’s expression coolly. Elijah allowed his fingers to be pulled from his brother’s collar, took a half step back himself as a request for forgiveness filled the air. His own hand dragged over his face, running down over his chest as though to smooth away imaginary wrinkles as he found those words himself, turning them on Tatia. Shoulders dropping as she told him she did forgive him, Elijah glanced his brother, his jaw flexing. ”It is a promise we may never be able to keep. This has been our pattern for so long.” A vicious circle without end, no matter what they had tried.
Slowly Elijah lifted the hand not still holding Tatia’s and extended it to his brother. This would not be the end of their family arguments, those would inevitably rage until the end of time but perhaps this was the first step towards them at least putting the worst of it behind them. ”The same side again?” he asked his brother now. ”No more accusations, no more scheming behind closed doors. For family?” His eyes cut to Tatia’s with that question. As much as she had gone through with them all, as much as she loved him, she was family now.
