There hadn’t been green spaces like these when she was growing up, no vast woodlands in her part of London, no real places to just step outside and breath. Tilting her head back as she knelt on the ground now, Olivia let the sun beat down on her closed eyelids, warming her like the rock beneath her. There’d been the park of course, practically on their doorstep, the train line that would take them up the hill to look over the whole of North London, but she’d not seen anything on this scale until the war had finally taken her out of London. She’d always felt that affinity with the outdoors, with the earth that would cling to her fingers when she buried them in the ground but it had taken George to teach her why she had that bond. Opening her eyes slightly Olivia stared up at the sky, it shone its soft spring blue through the screen of her lashes. No dark clouds today, none of the thunder that had been George’s element. A part of her was grateful for that. As much as she still loved her husband even after all this time, those little reminders of him could still claw at her heart. In the end it had been the storm that had cost George his life, the part of it that he was bonded to turning against him, or at least turning the hunters caught in it against them. Just the knowledge that it could happen again, especially here in Mystic Falls, a town filled with those who were more than human, had left her wary of revealing what she was here but Olivia knew she couldn’t put her training aside, not when she might need it to protect others again at some point.
She opened her eyes all the way, studying the ground around her from the flat slab of rock she’d settled on ten minutes before. Well away from the town she hoped she was safe to train without being spotted. She’d worked with her sword first, the blade that had once belonged to George’s mother, an earth Kitsune in her own right. That afternoon sunlight had sparked off of the sword as she’d worked through the moves that George had shown her in a field not unlike this one. In her lifetime it hadn’t been dulled by blood but Olivia was always aware that it was a possibility, just as it might be possible that she would need to tear up the ground Mystic Falls had been built on to protect its inhabitants too. Then her quiet life at the bar would be over and questions were going to need to be answered. Pushing the thought of that aside, Olivia speared her fingers into the ruin strewn ground she sat on. Immediately she could feel the vibration of it, the energy just waiting to be twisted by her. She closed her eyes again, concentrating on each molecule in turn. Olivia could locate the cooler spots within it, the items long buried by time. Squeezing her eyes tighter shut Olivia concentrated on one of those items of lifting it from the ground. ”Almost there,” Olivia whispered to herself, feeling the ground begin to erupt outwards around her palm. Closing her hand around the item she turned her palm over, looking at the worked stone beneath. Carved, she thought, some of the edges crisp in the sun. ”I bet someone hated losing you,” she said with a trace of amusement in her voice. Then the edges began to soften, shade suddenly cast over them. A gasp of breath tore from Olivia’s throat and for a moment, as she tore her gaze up from the item in her hand, the earth around her shook.

It had been over a year since Henrik had first made his way to Mystic Falls on what he had originally thought would be a simple errand for Crowley but during that time a lot had changed. After being reunited with his older brother and sister and seeing some of the things he had done during his time in town he had come to realise that he wasn’t the same as he was when Crowley first brought him back. He had grown up a lot since then and he knew that he wasn’t going to continue being just another puppet for the King of Hell to mess with. He knew that he would always feel grateful to Crowley for giving him a second chance at life and it was one that he knew that he wasn’t going to waste. Since arriving in Mystic Falls he liked to think that he had been able to do some good with his life, he had spent years cooped up in Crowley’s lair learning everything that he could about magic and while it was true that in the past he hadn’t always been able to use it for good, now he was determined to change that. Learning that his siblings were still alive had given him a new outlook on life, he knew that they had all done awful things during the course of their lives so far and all of them were down to him. Had he not convinced Nik that they should go and watch the men turn into wolves then he wouldn’t have died and his siblings never would have become vampires in the first place. Elijah had tried to tell him that it wasn’t his fault but blaming themselves for the actions of the rest of the family was something that Henrik knew the Mikaelsons were very good at. For most of his life Elijah had blamed himself for things that Nik had done things that were perhaps out of his control, but so many lives had been lost over the centuries because of the fact that their mother had gone to such great lengths to make sure that she didn’t lose any more children and he knew that if he could do something good with his life to make up for some of the sins committed by his siblings then he would. So far he had been able to bring a young woman back from the brink of death and he had been able to right the wrong Nik had committed by carrying out the ritual that had freed his werewolf side by bringing back all three of the sacrifices who died so that his brother could get his wish. Henrik knew that it wasn’t enough but he was doing his best and trying to make a difference in his own small way. Henrik knew that he could have left town after the ritual was over but instead he had decided to stay. After living among Crowley and his demons for so long Henrik had forgotten what it was like to be surrounded by people and with his brother seemingly putting down roots in Mystic Falls he knew that he had no reason to leave. For the first time in years Henrik had people around him that he cared about, not just in Elijah but he had made a few friends during his time in the town as well, and he knew that the last thing he wanted to do was to leave those connections behind. For the first time in a long time he had a place that he could actually call home and that was something that Henrik knew that he wasn’t going to give up without a fight. With everything that had been going on lately he hadn’t actually had that much time to explore the town properly. Elijah had given him the location of the part of the town on which their home had once stood and now Henrik finally felt like he was ready to see it. He knew that he could have easily asked his brother or Lukas to go with him but instead he had decided to go alone. There was still a part of him that sometimes found it difficult to look at the people he cared about and know the harm that he had caused them and even though they said that they didn’t blame him it was still a feeling that he had yet to shake so he knew that this was something that he was much better off doing on his own. With that in mind it didn’t take him long to find the spot Elijah had told him about although he wasn’t the first there it seemed. A woman was sat on the very spot that his home had once stood upon and even from a distance Henrik knew who it was. Olivia was someone he had met what felt like a long time ago now. They had helped each other back then and had become friends in the process. He hadn’t known that she was in Mystic Falls otherwise he would have looked her up before but now he watched in silence as she used her power to pull something from the ground. Once she was done he made his way over, glancing down at the small stone she was holding in her palm. “You got that right, my brother carved that for me a long time ago. I took it everywhere with me,” he said, a touch of fondness in his voice as he spoke. As Olivia gasped and the earth around them began to shake, Henrik held his hands up in front of him. “It’s only me Liv, I’m not going to hurt you,”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Decades of living in a town where you could cast a spell in the middle of the street or howl in the woods on a full moon and no one would blink an eye had almost spoiled her. Olivia knew that she’d always been too trusting, too quick to see the good in people, but in their village that hadn’t been a problem. Everybody there could be trusted without question. They all had something in them that needed to be kept secret outside of their community and that gave them a bond that was almost unbreakable from the inside. It had taken men from outside to destroy that trust in the world around her, to rock the ground beneath her feet. After she’d lost George Olivia had found it near impossible to reveal to anybody what she was, or to linger anywhere. It felt like there was a constant hound on her trail, a target between her shoulder blades that had left something inside of her quaking in fear for a long time. Trust was hard to find again, extended only to those distant members of her family she had continued to forge connections with and those she had left behind in their village. Whenever she needed help Olivia found herself reaching out to them but she hadn’t allowed herself to do it too often. They were in danger too and as always she put others’ lives above her own. It hadn’t been until one of those she trusted had pointed her in the direction of Mystic Falls that Olivia had actually started to feel at home once more. The town was a real community, pulling together what felt like a dozen times a year for events, leaning on one another when tragedy struck and that seemed to happen pretty often here. Some people had learned what she was and there’d been no backlash to that, she knew that her secret was safe with them and she offered them safe harbour at her bar in return, making it a hub for the community.
There was a chance that they were others here who could prove harmful though. Olivia had heard hunters whispering among themselves in the bar occasionally, trying to keep the ‘good’ they were doing in town secret. Maybe they were all honourable in the way they did it but it was hard to shrug off the image of what had happened to George. A good man’s life had been taken by those who couldn’t trust. The hunters that had killed her husband would’ve seen what she was doing in the woods this afternoon as something dangerous rather than something to be marvelled over. When the shadow fell over her, over the small carved figure she held in her hand, Olivia’s first thought had been that someone like that had come upon her. The woods were rumoured to be dangerous, bodies had been found out here but she’d believed that if trouble came to find her today, she’d be able to handle it. That confidence in her abilities hadn’t stopped her from startling though and Olivia felt the earth buck beneath the pair of them as her heart began to race. Familiar, her brain screamed as she tried to process what Henrik had said to her, the words that had shaken her brain like an alarm. Chest heaving, Olivia scrambled upright. The tremors slowed, the world turning still again as she put her empty hand up to her eyes to steady herself. ”I didn’t hear you coming,” Olivia admitted, her body starting to shake slightly as laughter broke through. ”You almost gave me a heart attack. A little warning next time would be nice.” Reaching out with the hand still holding the stone, Olivia thumped her fist lightly against Henrik’s chest in admonishment. She opened her hand slowly, staring down at the stone in it. ”Was it really yours? Did I find the one thing out here that happens to belong to you?” He’d grown up here, she could remember him telling her that. Henrik’s roots were here the same way hers were in London.

For a long time Henrik had been left with nothing but questions. He hadn’t known why Crowley had brought him back, what the demon’s plans were for him or what had happened to his family. It had taken him a while to get his head around the fact that a thousand years had passed since his death All along he had known that there must have been a reason why Crowley had brought him back but he never could have imagined what the real reason was. Instead he had been kept in the dark for eight years before finally learning what had happened to his siblings when he arrived in Mystic Falls. Even now he hated the fact that his siblings had been turned into the first vampires the world had ever known as a result of his desire to see the wolves turn, had he not decided to go and convinced Niklaus to go with him then he knew that it would have never happened. He would have had the chance to grow up, fall in love and start a family of his own one day and the same would have been true for his siblings. Instead he had doomed them to a life of death, bloodshed and pain and even though he knew that there wasn’t anything that he could do to take that back he at least hoped that he might be able to bring the family back together. He had freed Rebekah from the coffin that Niklaus had placed her in before the ritual that had taken the lives of Tatia, Riley and Grace and his brothers Kol and Finn wouldn’t be far behind them either. He knew why Nik had neutralised them both, in Finn’s case it had apparently been because their oldest brother had bored Niklaus with his self-loathing while in Kol’s case he had tried to make a move against Nik. Even when they were kids Nik had always liked to at least feel like he was in control and it seemed that that hadn’t changed. With Nik still out of town for the time being he and his siblings were free to live their lives the way they wanted to. Nik didn’t know he had been brought back nor did he know that he had brought back the sacrifices used in the ritual either and Henrik knew that it would be good if it could stay that way a little longer. At the moment he was content living his life for himself for the first time in years rather than being at anyone’s beck and call. Crowley had sent him to Mystic Falls to recruit his family to the demon’s side in the coming way but Henrik had made it clear that he was done being the King of Hell’s pawn after being lied to for so long and so far he had been left to his own devices. Any demons that had been sent after him had been sent straight back to Hell and he knew that he wasn’t going to let anyone get in his way this time around. He knew that he still owed Crowley, after all the demon had brought him back to life and had taught him a lot about magic but he knew that he wasn’t going to let his siblings become casualties in anyone’s war so he was determined to find another way to get Crowley the troops he needed. So far he had been keeping his ear to the ground during his time in Mystic Falls and rumour had it that there was a demon in town who was trying to recruit for the other side but so far he had yet to learn any real details and until he was able to find out anything concrete he knew that he might as well go about his life as normal. That was what had brought him out to the woods that day and it was a happy coincidence that had him bump into Olivia while he was out there. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to sneak up on you,” he assured her, a smile touching his lips as she punched his shoulder. That had never been his intention but he still seemed to have given her a fright and he couldn’t help but feel a little bad about that but she didn’t seem to mind too much anyway. Looking down at the stone in her hand, he nodded. “It was. I had it with me the night I died, I must have lost it at some point during the night or afterwards,” he explained. Perhaps it had slipped from his hand when Nik had carried him back to the village, he wasn’t sure. “It was supposed to be my brother’s idea for a spearhead but it didn’t turn out quite that way. It was still my favourite though, I remember sitting and watching him for ages as he did each of those carvings.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Mystic Falls not only had a reputation for being home to the supernatural, it had a cyclic reputation for crime too. Olivia hadn’t come here blindly when she’d received the call from Chicago, it would have been beyond foolish to do so. She hadn’t managed to stay alive for almost a century by rushing in to things blindly. From the moment she’d gone to school she’d been a planner, thinking everything through meticulously and it had worked for her … except for when she’d found herself blindsided. This sunny piece of ground in Mystic Falls was a far cry away from the dark, muddy field in which her powers had first emerged but the result had almost been the same. Her powers had emerged and the ground had bucked. It could have ended up being far worse than just a few cracks in the ground if the person who’d found her hadn’t been familiar, if it had been one of the vampires or the werewolves, or God forbid the hunters tracking her down. She could have ended up one of the missing, one of the dead, her face splashed across the front pages of the town’s newspapers. Olivia had read the stories from her rented apartment in Atlanta, scrolling through, familiarising herself with the town, its history and its people before she’d started to pack a bag. If it had been any bloodier she might not have stayed after the three weeks she’d initially spent here but despite the reputation it had felt like she could set down roots here, amongst people who understood her, people who would fight alongside her if the hunters who’d killed George ever caught up with her.
Olivia had thought that perhaps she’d put that feeling of paranoia entirely behind her but the fact that Henrik had made her jump out of her skin with her arrival told her that she still had them on her mind, even after all this time. George had told her to always be on guard, there were people out there who kill her for who she was, others who would use her for who she was, but there was no reason for her to guard herself around the man in front of her. Henrik had power of his own, reasons of his own to hide that power and she could understand it. Strip those powers away and it seemed that they wanted the same thing, a place to settle, to live their lives the same way the normal folk in town did. Had it been any of her brothers coming out of the woods and scaring her like that, Olivia knew she’d have done the same thing, thumping them for it before she laughed it off. Looking up at him, Olivia smiled apologetically. ”That’s the only reason I didn’t hit you harder for it,” she admitted. ”You’re too nice a guy to scare a girl on purpose.” And she was too careful to swing too hard, to hurt anybody she didn’t have to. That included the occasional drunk she had to handle at the bar. This wasn’t her turf to protect today, this had once been his. Olivia shifted her fingers, turning the stone around in it as Henrik spoke. The first few words had her stomach plummeting, her heart aching for him. She’d heard the story about his coming back, had been amazed by it even as she’d struggled to believe it. ”Spearhead or not, it’s still beautiful,” Olivia said softly. She dropped her other hand, fingers bending so that she could trace a fingertip over her wedding ring, the one thing she had left of her life with George. ”One of my brother-in-laws was a carpenter, he was always making things for my nieces and nephews. I still had one of the toys he made me when he first married my sister when I was living in the village.” And she’d left it behind like so much else. Raising her eyes to his, Olivia reached up to her own neck, slipping off the silver chain she wore there. She wrapped her fingers around the amulet again, let her power infuse it just long enough to drive the soil from it and reveal a natural channel from the stone. Olivia thread the chain through the hole then reached up to his neck to fasten it in place. ”You should keep it with you.” A good part of his past to carry with him.

Since arriving in Mystic Falls, Henrik had learned so much not just about the world that he lived in but also about his family. He had known that Crowley had had a hidden agenda, even though he had always felt grateful to the demon for bringing him back to life there had always been something about him that he just couldn’t quite trust. He had done what the demon had asked of him for eight years before he had realised that it was time to start standing his ground and now he had finally started to live his life for himself rather than for someone else he finally felt free. Reconnecting with Elijah had been great and Henrik hoped that in time he would be able to reconnect with his other siblings as well. He had spoken to Rebekah a little after he had undaggered her but he had found that guilt that had been hanging over him ever since he found out just what hurt his actions had caused his siblings all those years ago creeping up on him once again so he hadn’t reached out to her since. He knew that he was going to have to change that sooner or later, when he was growing up he had always been close to his siblings but Rebekah was the one who was closest in age to him and she was the only sister that he had so he had always enjoyed spending as much time with her as he could and he had tried to look out for her as much as possible even though she was older than him. It was a little strange now considering that he looked older than she did but it was something that he was getting used to. One thing he couldn’t seem to come to terms with was the reality of just how much she had lost because of him. She hadn’t had the chance to have the family that he knew she had always dreamed about when they were kids and he knew that was on him. Deep down he knew that he should talk to her about it but he wasn’t ready. Instead he was living his life the way he had always wanted to and finally putting down roots the way he had wanted to for years. One thing he hadn’t thought that he would be able to do while he was in town was reconnect with some old friends and make some new ones while he was at it. Olivia was someone that he had befriended some time ago and the truth was that after they parted ways he really hadn’t thought that they would end up seeing each other again. He had come to care about her more than he had realised at the time and he was glad that he had the chance to see her again. “I’m glad to know I have that going for me at least,” he chuckled. He knew that being a nice guy didn’t always pay off, from what he had seen so far it looked like they rarely seemed to get the girl but he was doing what he wanted to with his life and helping as many people as he could so he knew that that was really all that mattered. He had never experienced love for himself so deep down he hoped that he would one day but with the way luck seemed to run in his family he wasn’t so sure. It had taken Elijah a thousand years to be reunited with the love of his life after she died and the rest of his siblings didn’t seem to have the best track record in that respect either so he knew that chances were he would end up having the same run of bad luck they did but that was something that he knew better than to worry about for now. At the moment he was still young and he was enjoying his newfound freedom so he knew that he wanted that to continue for as long as possible. “It is,” he agreed. “We didn’t have a lot back then so it was always special to me,” he admitted. Things had certainly changed a lot since then but as far as he was concerned the small things often still meant the most to him. “It is incredible just how much sentimental value things like that can hold,” he added as Olivia explained about the toy that one of her brothers in law had made her. “Do you still have it with you?” he asked, not sure if she had at least been able to take that with her when she left her home or not. Watching as she took off the chain she was wearing and made a hole in the spearhead so that she could thread the chain through it before fastening it around his neck he felt a smile touch his lips. “Thank you,” he said sincerely, reaching up and clasping the stone firmly in his hand as his eyes met hers. “You have no idea how much this means to me.” It was the one thing he had left from his former life and he knew that he would always be grateful to her for finding it. “I can’t take this without giving you something in return,” he said, crouching down and picking up two things from the ground. The first was an ordinary stone which he infused with magic to turn into the diamond while the other was a twig which he quickly turned into a metal band. Within moments he had created a bracelet for her, a silver band with intricate engravings around the outside and the diamond set in the middle, and he held it out to Olivia. “It might not look like much but the engravings will glow if danger is near and if you speak my name into the stone I’ll hear it,” he explained. It was an idea that he had practiced before but he had never had someone he cared about to give it to before so Olivia was the first in that respect, he just hoped that she would use it if she needed to. When war had broken out, Olivia hadn’t dreamed that by the end of it she’d not only find herself on the way to being married but she would discover that she was something other than just human. In 1939 she’d been a young girl with her whole life ahead of her. She’d dreamed of seeing her brothers and sisters walk down the aisle of their small local church, had even imagined walking behind them, a special dress picked up for the day, a quick giggled, reassuring word for those they had chosen to live their lives with. Perhaps only a job in one of the local shops or factories was waiting for her but that might have proven to be enough. At the very least she would have had time with them all, would have seen them grow old and their children sprout from chubby cheeked babies to handsome lads and pretty girls with minds as sharp as their Aunty Olivia’s. The bomber that had almost killed all of those at her emplacement that night had changed that dream forever. Olivia hadn’t been able to pull the wool over her eyes after that. Even if she’d wanted to George wouldn’t have let her. There was another world out there, one she’d been born into even if she hadn’t known it. George had found a place where they could both be safe and hide what they were from the world but the moment that was lost Olivia had realised that she had a responsibility to the world and she wanted to hold on to it. Her gifts meant that she could protect others and the bar she’d managed to set up here would give others the chance to feel safe somewhere for a time, as she had in Canada.
Olivia hoped that the man chuckling at her now was aware of that. That he had a safe harbour in the town if it was needed. She’d extended the offer to others, had tried to make the supernatural and the human both feel at home there. The only thing she remained wary of were those who would look to destroy that. A part of her felt guilty for confusing Henrik for them today. There was nothing of those hunters in the dark eyes she met now. Olivia’s smile filled with wry amusement as Henrik chuckled at her. ”You have so much more going for you and you know it,” she admonished him. A nice guy with a heart of gold, trying to make the world a better place, just as she was. There was a lot of George in him and that had made her heart ache a little at first. It ached again now as she spoke of the stone he held. Their lives echoed each other in more ways than most would have imagined. ”It was the same at home,” she said softly. ”Twelve kids and a widowed mother, you can imagine how scarce most things were.” It had made them appreciate each other all the more. Lord how she missed them. Wringing her hands together, Olivia shook her head. ”I didn’t take anything apart from what I had on me that night. It’s probably still there. Whatever was left the townsfolk gathered together for me.” She’d never had the heart to travel there and retrieve it all, the life she’d had entirely left behind. Olivia traced her fingers down the chain, letting them fall away as Henrik’s hand rose to clasp the stone. ”Of course you can,” she told him honestly as that generous streak of his began to shine. ”It always belonged with you.” She’d just returned it home. He had to ignore her words though didn’t he. While she stood with her mouth hanging open Henrik went to work, holding out something intricate and beautiful. Olivia took it cautiously, shaking her head as she looked up at him. ”It might not look like much…” she managed it before she took it and laughed. ”Nobody’s ever given me a diamond before, let alone a magical diamond. You’re crazy, this is too much.” And there was that ache in her heart again as she slowly slid it over her hand.

Henrik hadn’t known what he would find when he had arrived in Mystic Falls on Crowley’s orders. He had thought that it would be just like every other task he had been asked to carry out for the demon, he would stay in the town for as long as he had to before moving on with his life. This time was different, this time he had been reunited with the family he had believed to have been dead for so long and he had been able to do some good with his life. He knew that chances were that Crowley wouldn’t be overly happy when he learned what he had been up to during his time in the town, he had brought Allison back from the brink of death and he had resurrected the three sacrifices who had ended up being used in his brother’s ritual and he had also freed Rebekah from the coffin that Niklaus had trapped her in. None of that had been the plan when he had arrived in the town but at the end of the day he knew that he was ready to start living his own life and that meant doing the things that he wanted to do, not just the things that Crowley told him to do. He was still grateful to the King of Hell for bringing him back but he knew that he had done more than enough over the years to repay that debt and even though he knew that he would help Crowley if he needed it he was ready to take control of his own life rather than having everything dictated for him. One thing that being around his siblings again had reminded him was that he was a Mikaelson and they never let anyone control them or make their decisions for them. It was almost as surprising to run into Olivia while he was in Mystic Falls as it was to have finally been reunited with his brother and best friend Lukas. Henrik had heard about the town during his travels and he knew that it was like a magnet for all things supernatural but when he and Olivia had parted ways he had honestly thought that he would never get to see her again. Knowing that she was in town was a bonus, however, and he couldn’t deny that a part of him hoped that they would be able to spend more time together. He had taken a liking to her the first time they met and she was one of the people in the world he genuinely cared about so he knew that he wasn’t going to pass up that chance if it presented itself. “Maybe but it’s still nice to hear you say it,” he said, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at her. Olivia was the first person he had found during his time on earth that he could truly be himself with and it was good to see that that hadn’t changed. She knew who and what he was and he knew the same about her but neither of them cared about that and the truth was that it was refreshing to say the least. As Olivia spoke Henrik took her hand in his and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I do understand how scarce things would have been for you. If you ever want to go back and see what is left I’ll go with you,” he offered sincerely. He knew what it was like to lose everything and just seeing the stone that his brother had carved for him had made him remember just how precious the small things could be so if there was even a chance that Olivia might be able to regain something that was once precious to her he hoped that she would take it. “Thank you,” he said, his smile genuine as he lifted his gaze to meet hers. It really did mean more to him than she could ever know and he knew that he was going to make sure that he never lost it again. It wasn’t long before he had something to give back to her in return and as she said it was too much he shook his head. “You returned something to me that I always treasured, it was the least I could do,” he assured her. “Besides, I would never be able to forgive myself if anything happened to you,” he added gently. He knew that he didn’t really have any right to say that, they were just friends after all, but he truly cared about Olivia and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to keep her safe even if that meant giving her something that would warn her if danger was coming. Decades had passed since she’d sat on the road just outside of their village, George sprawled in her lap, his blood on her hands and the plea for her to run on his lips, but Olivia’s love for her husband hadn’t faded. Her grief hadn’t much either. Most would’ve said she should’ve been over it by now, moving on with her life in every respect given that passage of time but for her it hadn’t been that way. Kitsunes didn’t live their lives in that brief snatch of time that most did. It wasn’t a matter of a few decades, a diamond wedding anniversary or a card from the Queen if you were truly blessed. George had taught her that it could be centuries. Her mum, her brothers and sisters, even her grandkids would’ve been long gone in what might eventually have felt like a blink of an eye but at least she would have her husband with her. The hunters who had attacked that night had torn that possibility away from her though and had left that yawning pit of pain and grief inside of her. Olivia never would’ve said she was looking for a way to cut that out of her but this move to Mystic Falls had been a fresh start that was long past due. If there was anybody here she could’ve admitted that to it was the man in front of her. They’d both been torn away from the people they loved, under very different circumstances admittedly, but it was a feeling they both knew well.
It was more empathy that she felt for Henrik, more than just empathy she could see in him too. He had depths and the sort of manner that seemed to draw people to him. Right now Olivia was tempted to tell him just how humble he was, with a fair amount of amusement dripping from her words, but she bit her tongue, shooting a smile back instead. ”If I knew you wanted to hear it, I’d have said it more often,” she said on a chuckle. She was the first to give complements where due and wouldn’t be shy with him, not even after he’d given her such a scare. He knew her story, parts of her laid bare with him in a way she’d done so with anybody else in those years since she’d lost George. Olivia swallowed the lump in her throat as she squeezed Henrik’s hand back. ”If I do, I’ll give you a call, I promise. For now, I think I’m good with what I have here.” The only thing that could’ve given her back what meant most was a time machine and even then Olivia knew that the future would never have been the same as it might’ve been if she and George had never stopped on the road that night.
Her smile still tinged with a faint trace of her sadness, Olivia shook her head, waving off Henrik’s gratitude. She’d raise everything from the ground here willingly if she thought it would give him back more of what he had lost. With the diamond he created glimmering at her wrist, it wasn’t sadness in Olivia’s smile anymore, it was amused disbelief. ”It doesn’t exactly feel like a fair trade to me.” She let out a low whistle, looking down at her wrist but she lifted eyes that suddenly burned with tears up to meet his. George had said something similar the night he’d come to the house to ask her to go with him. She swallowed hard again, wrapping her arms around Henrik’s neck as she pulled him in for a tight hug. ”That goes both ways you know,” she said, not relinquishing her hold as she got the words out past the lump in her throat. ”I might not be able to create diamonds from rocks but in a fight I can hold my own and protect those that I care about.” Some good had to come from her powers she’d once told herself. She was a kitsune and that had to mean something more than just a long life.

While Henrik was growing up he had always thought that it was just a matter of time before he would have to find his place within the village, settle down and start a family of his own. He had always heard whispers about his mother and father but he had never really taken too much notice of them, instead choosing to have as much fun with his family and friends as he could while he had the chance. His life should have been a simple one but it had turned out to be anything but thanks to one decision he had made while he was still a child. He had wanted to watch the men turn into wolves during the full moon but had he known then what he knew now then he never would have followed through with it. That one decision hadn’t just resulted in his death it had also resulted in his siblings becoming the world’s first vampires and there was so much blood on his hands with what had happened in the thousand years since then. Finding the one thing from his childhood that he had cherished was enough to remind him of a time when things were so much simpler than they were now and the fact that Olivia had been the one to uncover it meant the world to him. The two of them had hit it off the first time they met but there had been something more to it then on his part at least and he was starting to realise that there still was. After spending eight years surrounded by demons being around Olivia was like a breath of fresh air and it was something that he knew he didn’t want to give up just yet. “Where would the fun be in that? I like to feel like I’ve earned it,” Henrik said, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Olivia. The truth was that even when he was growing up compliments or praise had never been things that he had become too accustomed to hearing but that was just the way that things had been back then with his family. Now he was living his own life the way he wanted to and even though it was good to hear Olivia say things like that he still didn’t expect it to happen too often. “Alright, just make sure you do,” he said as she squeezed his hand in return. He knew that it couldn’t have been easy for Olivia to leave everything she’d had behind her so if there was anything he could do to make that better he knew that he would do it even if that meant returning to her old home with her. “It might not to you but it does to me,” he chuckled. While the spearhead might not look like much, to Henrik it was the most cherished item from his childhood and he knew that he wasn’t going to lose it again so the bracelet he had given Olivia was more than a fair trade. “I just hope you like it,” he added. She was wearing it at least which was hopefully a good sign. The tears in her eyes as they met his were enough to surprise Henrik and for a moment he was worried that perhaps he had overstepped the mark. Even after they had parted ways he had found himself thinking about Olivia often and it was no secret that he cared about her but she was still hurting over the loss of her husband so he knew that the last thing he wanted was to make things difficult for her. He had never had the time to like someone before as even friends had been fleeting but now he was in Mystic Falls to stay it was a whole new adventure and he knew that the last thing he wanted was to give her any reason to push him away. Instead she pulled him in for a hug and he hugged her back just as tightly. “I know, I remember,” Henrik said as he brought one hand up and brushed her hair away from her face gently. They had fought side by side back when they first met after he had found himself in trouble during the mission that Crowley had sent him on and he was pretty sure that it was just how fiercely she had fought that had made him start to like her in the first place. “Hopefully there won’t be any more trouble while we’re in town. I’m just glad you’re here.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Henrik had always reminded her of George in a way but the more she’d gotten to know him, the more her heart ached at the echoes of her husband she could see in the man Henrik had grown to be. So honest, so good, despite the amazing fact that he’d been raised through his teenaged years by the King of Hell. That was still hard to wrap her brain around but given the fact that she’d been born a kitsune, it really shouldn’t have come as all that much of a surprise. The world was a far bigger, far crazier place than her mum or her siblings could ever have believed it would be when they’d been alive. Even at war, Britain in the 1940s had been a far simpler place, one that seemed devoid of all the supernatural goings on that she’d only learned about after the night she’d saved the lives of those on gun emplacement. Her sisters would’ve shrieked at the idea of vampires, scoffed over the thought that she was standing there talking to a wizard who’d been born a thousand years ago. They’d never known what her or George were, she’d never wanted to burden them with that. A part of her had been sad at the idea of having to hide that all from them but as the hunters had proven with George, being something inhuman could be deadly and the last thing she wanted in the world was for what she was to cause harm to someone else. Those she’d become close to in Mystic Falls had already suffered enough, Henrik included. He was teasing her now but the fact was he was standing on ground that his family had once soaked in blood in their grief over losing him.
The boy they’d adored enough to have their lives shattered by his death was definitely still in that smile he was aiming at her. Olivia shook her head, her lips still curved right back at him. ”You’ve definitely earned it, probably a thousand times over, so take the compliment,” she told him. It took an incredible man to offer to take off with her like that and Olivia hoped Henrik knew how grateful she was for his offer. ”I will do,” she promised hoarsely. Eventually she might want to revisit the life she’d had with George but right now beginning to build something here felt better than she’d ever hoped it would. She had friends, people willing to step up if she ever needed them, people who were as willing to protect her as she was him. ”That’s because you’ve got an incredibly generous heart,” she told him on a chuckle. Most women would’ve tossed what they’d call a silly rock away to snatch up a diamond but Olivia knew that the spearhead had far more sentimental value. She turned her wrist again, then let her eyes rise to his. ”I honestly love it, it’s beautiful.” Whether he thought he deserved the compliment or not she wanted to tell him he was an amazing man, one in a million, the second such man she’d known. Olivia rested her cheek against his shoulder for a moment, waiting for her eyes and throat to stop aching. ”Don’t ever forget,” she told him honestly as he brushed her hair from her face. ”I hope you’ve got your fingers crossed. Trouble seems to find this town more often than not. I’m glad you’re here too. Makes it easier to put down roots when you’ve got people around who know exactly who you are.” And she’d never hidden any of herself from him, she’d done the opposite, opening up parts of herself that she hadn’t been certain weren’t closed off forever.

Finding his family and best friend altogether in one place when he arrived in Mystic Falls was more than Henrik ever could have hoped for. He had spent such a long time alone, he had been raised by Crowley and surrounded by demons but the truth was that he had never felt truly at ease while he was with them. He had constantly felt like he had to be on his guard even in the beginning. Crowley had been the one to bring him back and Henrik knew that he owed the demon his life but he was tired of being a puppet. For eight long years he had served the demon, carrying out different tasks and learning whatever spells Crowley had wanted him to learn just so that he could try and make the only father figure he had proud but now he knew that he wasn’t alone after all a part of him hated Crowley for lying to him for so long. Had he known that his siblings were still alive when he would have sought them out long before and he didn’t doubt that that was exactly what Crowley had wanted to avoid for as long as possible but Henrik knew that he still would have taken the news better if it had come from Crowley himself. Instead he had been left to bump into Elijah on his first day in Mystic Falls and he had learned just what had become of his family. All of the blood that had been spilled after that was firmly on his hands, a result of one decision to watch the wolves turn on the full moon he had made as a naive child that had not only ended his life but changed the course of the lives of his siblings and his father forever. It was because of that one foolish decision that none of them had had the chance to live out the lives they were meant to and he knew that he would never be able to make up for that but he could at least try and do some good with this new life he had been given and he had been doing his best to do that ever since he had arrived in Mystic Falls. Even though lots of bad things had happened as a result of that one decision some good had come of it as well. Elijah had found Tatia again and Lukas had had the chance to reunite with his mother. As for Henrik, he had found Olivia and even though the time they had spent together had seemed fairly short so far she was still someone who meant the world to him. He knew that she had loved and lost before, Olivia had lost her husband and the pain of losing someone like that was something that he couldn’t even begin to imagine but she had come out of it the other side and she seemed even stronger for it and he couldn’t help but admire her for that. It was so easy being around her, because she was a part of the supernatural world herself he didn’t have to worry about pretending to be someone that he wasn’t when he was around her and she had accepted everything about him, even the past that would have no doubt made most people’s heads spin. No matter what he told her she seemed to take it in her stride and knowing that he had someone who accepted him completely really did mean the world to him. “I will,” he grinned as she told him to take the compliment before nodding as she said she would let him know if she ever wanted to go back to her old home. Henrik knew that it could help with closure sometimes but it wasn’t something that he wanted Olivia to have to face on her own so he honestly hoped that she would let him go with her if she did decide to go. “I didn’t have a lot when I was growing up but now I have these powers so it only feels right to share them and do something good with them,” he shrugged. He hadn’t asked for them and he knew that Crowley wouldn’t like it if he knew even half of the things that Henrik had done since he had arrived in Mystic Falls but the truth was that he didn’t care. It was his life and he was living it the way he wanted to. “I’m glad,” he admitted. He had felt a little nervous about giving it to her but she was wearing it and he hoped that she would continue to do so. He had meant it when he had said that he didn’t know what he would do if something happened to her, Olivia meant too much to him to even think about losing her so he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to keep her safe. “I won’t,” he assured her. “I’ve seen you in action, I could never forget what a Warrior you are,” he added with a smile. He knew that she could have put more than half the men in his village when he was growing up to shame with ease even without using her kitsune abilities. As she spoke again he let the hand that had been brushing her hair away from her face come to rest against her cheek. “I won’t let anything happen to you, you have my word,” he assured her. “I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised that you’re here too, I always seem to be drawn to you.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Since she’d found out what she was capable of doing Olivia had gone full circle with her powers – hating them, loving them, considering them a miracle and a curse. Undoubtedly they’d saved lives, the gunners on the night the power had first emerged alive because of what she’d been able to do, her own life honestly feeling like the least of it. Those gunners had gone on to have kids of their own, all of their lives spinning out from that one moment. What ran in her veins had taken lives too though and that was what had taken her the longest time to reconcile herself with. George had tried to use his power for good on the night that he’d been killed and instead of being thanked for saving lives, the two men whose hearts were beating because of him had killed him for it. After that she hadn’t wanted what ran in her veins, would’ve gladly been rid of it but Olivia knew that she couldn’t cut off a part of herself that way. No matter how dangerous it could be, one day she might need it again, to save her own if needed to, to save the lives of those in town who’d come to mean something to her. For years she’d remained almost on the run, not letting anybody close enough but here people had muscled their way in anyway. Henrik had worked his way the furthest into her life, knowing all along exactly who she was. His acceptance of that made what she’d been able to do here for him today feel all the better. It was the first step into getting back into using those powers to do a little good instead of hiding behind the shield that they gave her … or the grief they’d caused her.
There were echoes between their lives, she thought as she looked up at him, the sun streaming down on his dark hair, the sky behind him a blue almost too bright to look at. They’d both grown up in times when luxuries were scarce, in families where loss wasn’t an alien concept. Being able to empathise as they could, Olivia knew that Henrik had meant it when he’d said he’d take that trip back to Canada with him and she knew that she could trust that shiver that went through her heart when he said it felt right to share his powers and do something good with them. ”Me neither,” she admitted softly. ”I don’t know how my mum managed to handle a twelfth kid. She never learned what I was, George thought it would be safer for them not to know if anybody came looking for me … I think my mum would’ve been proud of me using them to do right though.” Florence Ashby had always been proud of all of her children and hadn’t ever shied away from letting them know. Olivia imagined her mum’s eyes would’ve gone wide at the sight of the diamond. She winged a brow up at him now, a chuckle in her throat. ”You didn’t think I’d like it?” she asked, a trace of teasing in her voice. It wasn’t just because of the enormity of giving a diamond, she knew that. It was what the gift could do, how it could keep her safe, that was more important than anything. Even knowing what she could do Henrik had wanted to do that. ”Coming from one warrior to another, that means a lot,” she said honestly. Olivia swallowed hard as her hand came up to rest on his shoulder. ”The same goes, Henrik. I’m not going to let anything happen to you either. Seems like fate likes drawing us together. It seems to like throwing people into my path when I need them the most.” George had been there to help her understand her power, to open her heart, and when she’d needed to finally find another home Henrik, Nick and Lauren had been right there to help her find one in this town.

Henrik hadn’t known why Crowley had sent him to Mystic Falls to begin with but it hadn’t taken him long to figure that out. Elijah had been the first person from his past that he had found himself reunited with and finding out that Olivia was in town too was definitely a nice surprise. She had come to mean a lot to him during the time that they had spent together a few years ago and saying goodbye to her when he’d had to return to Hell was one of the hardest things that he’d had to do in a long time. He hadn’t truly known why then and it was only after they had gone their separate ways that he had come to realise that he was starting to like her as something more than a friend but by then it had been too late and he honestly hadn’t thought that he would get to see her again. It had come as a surprise to find that she was the one out there while he was looking for the site that his home had once stood on and the fact that she had managed to find the arrowhead that Nik had carved for him was incredible. Not only had someone that he had never thought that he would see again come back into his life but he had also regained something that he had thought had been lost to him forever and that was something that he hadn’t expected at all but he knew better than to take it for granted. After spending eight years thinking that his family and everyone he had ever known was dead he knew better than most to cherish the time that he was able to spend with the people he cared about and Olivia definitely fell into that category, perhaps even in a way that he wasn’t ready to admit to himself just yet. Either way he couldn’t be happier to have her back in his life and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to keep it that way. He knew that he wasn’t the only one who had been through a lot during their life so far, Olivia had too and that was one of the reasons why Henrik had wanted to make sure that she knew that she had someone in her corner. He knew that she had lost her family to old age some time ago and she had also lost her husband to hunters and he knew that the latter wound was likely that much more raw for her. He didn’t know what it was like to love someone only to end up losing them like that and he honestly hoped that he would never have to find out. At only thirteen years old when he died he had never experienced his first love back then and ever since he was brought back there had never really been enough time for him to find someone like that but now he had decided to start living his life for himself at long last he was hopeful that he would get the chance to experience it now. “I’m sure she would,” he nodded. He wasn’t sure what his own mother would think of the man that he had become but he liked to think that he was doing his family proud by trying to right at least some of their wrongs and make sure that no other innocent lives were lost at the hands of his family. “I wasn’t sure if you would think that it was too much,” Henrik admitted as he rubbed the back of his neck nervously. He knew that it wouldn’t be everyone’s style and he also knew that there was ever chance that Olivia might think that he was being unnecessarily cautious but he had wanted to make sure that she always knew that he would be there if she needed him. “I’m not so sure that I’m a warrior, that was always more my brothers’ thing,” he chuckled. Their father had tried to teach them all to be warriors but as the youngest in the family Henrik had been left to his own devices more often than not so he hadn’t had the same level of training that his father had instilled on his brothers, nor had he fallen foul of his father’s temper quite so much. “I’m glad things worked out the way they did this time, I hated the thought of never seeing you again,” he admitted. She had been a good friend to him and that was something that he was grateful for. “It’s getting late, would you like me to walk you back?”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

When you’d lived a century, give or take a few years, it often felt like you were living out of your time. Things had changed so rapidly after the war, technology moving on with the sort of rapidity her married life had. Looking back, it seemed like it hadn’t spun by half as quickly as it had seemed, but life had marched on regardless. There were days when she honestly couldn’t believe it had been more than seventy years before she’d walked up the aisle towards George. Decades had passed in their cosy little corner of the world before disaster had struck and then she’d barely lifted her head for years, almost terrified to pause in one place for too long, to allow anybody to get close to her. It was easy to get lost in that modern world, to be the nostalgic girl in apartment 4B. None of them had to know that she’d actually lived through the sixties and didn’t just have kitsch tastes, they were things that mattered, things that reminded her of everything that she’d had to leave behind. Pulling Henrik’s carved arrow head from the ground must have been like throwing him back a thousand years. Looking up at him Olivia wondered if digging it up for him had been the best thing, if she should’ve left his past here buried, but the look on his face was reassurance enough that she had done the right thing. The past might’ve been painful and sometimes not being able to untether yourself from it was terrifying, but there were good memories and with each year that passed now there seemed to be more people in her life that Olivia trusted she could rely on now. After years without a family or close friends, things were beginning to change.
Her mum would’ve been glad that know that she had people around here. The last thing she’d ever wanted for her youngest was for her to feel abandoned. Olivia would’ve happily said she never had been, the memories of her mum, her siblings and even George had made certain of that. Thanks to all of them she had people who loved her. If Florence Ashby had been given her time over again Olivia knew that her mum would’ve taken in that baby all over again. ”Yours would have been proud of you too,” she told him, trying not to push too hard on what must have still been a sore spot. Esther hadn’t been given the opportunity to see her son grow up and become the sort of man who wouldn’t hesitate to give a friend something to keep them safe. Of course the diamond on the bracelet would’ve raised brows but not hers. ”Never,” she promised, holding back the chuckle as she reached up to draw his hand from his neck. ”I’ve never been the sort to swoon over diamonds.” Money and glamour had never meant a thing to her. She’d always wanted to help, to do something to make other people’s lives better. As a warrior, had he lived, Henrik might have done the same, but now he had options. Olivia shook her head, cutting off his thought. ”It might have been their thing too but I can tell you would’ve saved lives in your own way. You don’t need it with a sword in your hand to make you a warrior.” In a way she’d always wanted to believe she had been one. Hundreds, if not thousands of lives had been saved by the German planes they’d pinpointed for their own pilots and then she’d save her crew too. Smiling, Olivia trailed her hand down from Henrik’s shoulder and tucked it in the crook of his arm. ”Sure. I’d like the company. I guess we don’t have to worry about what it might’ve been like not to have to run into one another again.” A part of her was incredibly glad that she hadn’t needed to go the next couple of decades wondering if he was doing OK, if he was safe and happy.
