There was a time when life had seemed so much simpler than it was now but the truth was that those days were long gone. Over the last year or so Tatia had been resurrected, she had been reunited with her son who was a warlock who had cast a spell to make himself immortal a thousand years ago, she had been reunited with her former lover who had become one of the first vampires the world had ever known, she had found out that she had two doppelgangers who looked just like her and her life had been taken a second time by a second man she used to love so that he could free his werewolf side. There was a time when just one of those things would have sounded crazy to the young woman but that was just how her life had ended up going. It had taken her a long time to find out who had brought her back the first time but it had been Henrik who had eventually filled in the pieces. The person who had brought her back was the same person to have brought him back – Crowley. She still didn’t quite understand what part the King of Hell had wanted her to play in his plan but she was making the most of whatever time she had because she knew better than to believe that she would be lucky enough to be brought back for a third time. Before the ritual took place lots of things were said, she had even told Elijah that she was still in love with him and he had said the same, but there was still so much more to say. Back then she had felt certain that they would never get the chance to truly be together, she had felt sure that her death would be final this time and she wouldn’t get to see him again unless it was from the Other Side, but that hadn’t happened. Henrik and Lukas had given her another chance to live her life and while it was true that she knew she had already been granted more chances to do that than she deserved, she also knew that she wasn’t going to waste it. Thankfully the Salvatores had been kind enough to let her continue living at the Boarding House since she had made up her mind to stay in Mystic Falls despite the risks if Niklaus found out that she and the others had survived the ritual so she didn’t have to worry about that but lately she had found herself thinking of Elijah more and more often. Now it seemed that they might finally have the chance to be together and if that was the case then she knew that she wanted to take it. She knew that they were both different people to who they used to be and the fact that she would continue to age while Elijah remained the same scared her a little but it was a risk that she knew was worth taking. She wanted to see if there was a chance for them and that was why she had decided to pay Elijah a visit that day. Knocking on the door to his apartment, all she could do was wait for him to open the door and hope that he was at home. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The glass at his elbow caught the rays of the afternoon sun, sending a beam of ruby light across the book that lay spread on the table in front of him. It had been a week since he’d returned to Mystic Falls, certain now that his brother was done with the town at least in the short term. Niklaus had seemingly fled Mystic Falls almost as soon as his ritual was over, leaving behind a parting gift in the form of Damon Salvatore poisoned by a werewolf bite. That gift had forced Stefan Salvatore’s hand and it was only since he had returned that he had learned that Stefan was back too, his humanity back on. Tatia was in safe hands at the Boarding House, at least until his brother eventually learned that those who should’ve died in the ritual had been returned to life by Henrik and Lukas. Thanks wouldn’t be forthcoming for the pair of them once Niklaus learned what had occurred but Elijah could still feel it in the pit of his stomach as he reached for the glass of wine. They had ensured that lives would not be destroyed here, although they had not been able to entirely erase the changes that the others used in the spell had gone through. The boy would still remain the werewolf he had been when he had come to town and the girl … there was nothing that could ‘cure’ her. She would be a vampire until her eventual death. Then there was Tatia …
With her on his mind Elijah flipped the book shut, fingers lingering on its worn cover for a moment. He had left Mystic Falls after the ritual to see for himself that Tatia would be safe. Most seemed to think that the third time was the charm but he knew better than to believe that this time they would be allowed to live in peace, to love each other as they once should have been able to. It was better that they have those few weeks apart and be able to enjoy it later, than for him to remain here and for trouble to find them when he was not expecting it. Perhaps there was a trace of cowardice in the fact that he had not gone to her at the Boarding House that he had returned but it was cowardice that he aimed to get over in the next day or two. No matter what the future held, whether it only lasted a few mortal decades, Elijah knew he would be a fool not to take this chance that they had been given. Hearing the knock on the door now, he half imagined it was Henrik come to seek him out, the message he had left for his brother to inform him of his return finally garnering some form of answer. Setting the glass aside as he had the book, Elijah rose, crossing the room quietly. His fingers lingered on the knob for perhaps a moment longer than necessary, the certainty that Henrik lay on the other side fading as he finally stood a foot from his visitor. He had been right to second guess himself, he thought as he opened the door to reveal Tatia on the other side. ”This is long overdue,” he admitted, a faint smile gracing his lips as he stepped back for her to enter. ”Come in. I should’ve let you know when I returned, it was the least I could’ve done.” More than once he’d found himself standing at the windows letting in that afternoon light, staring in the direction of the Boarding House. Now the occupant that meant the most to him had closed that distance herself.

The wait for Elijah to return to Mystic Falls had been agonising as far as Tatia was concerned. She had understood that he had decided to leave for a while to make sure that things were safe but that didn’t mean that she hadn’t missed him. Before the ritual they had both said so much and she had found herself thinking of that quite often since Lukas and Henrik had succeeded in bringing her back. She still couldn’t believe that they had managed it, in her own way she had said her goodbyes to the people she loved even if she hadn’t said it directly to all of them and she had made her peace with the fact that her time back was going to prove to be short after all. She knew now that she should have realised that Lukas wouldn’t let her go without a fight but judging by the surprise she had seen etched on Elijah’s face when she opened her eyes that was something that the two boys had kept from him. Had she been the only one who was brought back then she knew that it would have been much more difficult to accept but they hadn’t, Lukas and Henrik had done an honourable thing in bringing back the others who had been used as sacrifices as well and she couldn’t help but feel proud of them for that. She had told Lukas that he had become a man that she was proud of and the more time she spent with him the more she came to realise just how true those words were. She had longed to talk to Elijah after the ritual but there hadn’t been much time to discuss such delicate matters and then he had left town leaving her with nothing but a void in her life. A few times she had thought about heading to the apartment that Elijah and Henrik shared to see if he had returned but she had refrained, not wanting to be disappointed to find that he wasn’t there after all. That day, however, she had felt drawn to the apartment in a way and she had known that she couldn’t put it off any longer. She had known in her heart that Elijah wouldn’t stay away from Mystic Falls between them but considering just how long they had been waiting for a chance to finally be together her patience was wearing a little thin and she knew that she needed to find out where she stood once and for all. Thankfully it was Elijah who opened the door when she knocked and she felt a smile touch her own lips in return. “You’re right about that,” she admitted as she stepped inside. As he said that he should have let her know when he returned, she found herself studying him carefully for a moment. “Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked, not sure whether there was a certain reason why he had held back like possibly regretting the things he had said the last time they were together. “When did you get back?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

On the day he had gone to the Boarding House to tell Tatia of his feelings for her he had been certain that Niklaus’ ritual and Tatia’s death were inevitable. As hard as he had tried to convince her not to hand herself she had fought back to do the right thing. There was only so long that they could delay the ritual, only so many that Niklaus could slaughter to free what their mother had locked away supposedly for his own good. Elijah had resigned himself to the fact that their love could not last, one of them would be left here without the other, left to grieve for what had again been taken from them. He hadn’t known what the future could hold, what it would hold for them, until Elijah had been standing over them at the quarry, the words that could return Tatia to life on his lips. Hope had risen from that part of him that was already dying then, the desperate hope that what his family had taken they could return to him. Tatia had drawn breath again, nature working through Henrik and Lukas to bring her back to life for a second time. Knowing better than to look a gift horse in the mouth he knew that he should’ve stayed, should’ve started to live the life that had been given back to them but in those first few days afterwards Elijah had found himself unable to settle. Niklaus was already rampaging across the country with Stefan Salvatore, leaving death in their wake, the trail they were leaving possibly leading straight back to the town where those his brother had killed were all alive once more. The danger had felt close enough for him to touch it and that was just too close for comfort.
His gaze had squarely been on his brother’s retreating back as he had travelled in that wake but Elijah was aware that his heart had been left in Mystic Falls and he would return there, even if it took every ounce of courage he possessed to cross the town line again. There had been guilt over his family’s role in Tatia’s death, weighing on his conscience right up until the moment he had opened the door to find her there. Henrik’s assurances that he could set it aside had slowly been lifting that weight but as he stepped back into the apartment to allow her entrance it disappeared. There was hurt in her words, he could read that readily enough but it did not sucker punch him the way it once had. ”I’m sorry for taking as long as I did,” he murmured, the apology an honest one as he closed the door behind them. The weight could have returned at Tatia’s questions but Elijah lifted his chin instead. They were ones he most certainly deserved. ”I came back a week ago,” he admitted, gesturing to the chair where he had been sitting. He crossed the room himself, sinking down on the coffee table before it rather than the vast expanse of the couch. ”I wanted to find you immediately but I’d heard of Stefan’s return to town and I needed to make certain that he was no longer under Niklaus’ influence.” He had been able to see for himself that Stefan was recovering, no longer a threat to those he cared about in town … and yet … he had still been mustering up his courage. Had their time apart changed what they had restarted in those days before the ritual? Dark eyes studied the face that had invaded his dreams on a nightly basis, searching for some sign that it had. ”Does it help to know that I thought of you every day that I was gone?”

For such a long time now Tatia had been feeling like she was living on borrowed time. Henrik had filled her in on who had brought her back to life and why and with the ritual looking she had known that her days were numbered. She had never thought that Henrik and Lukas would find a way to bring her back for a second time or that they would be able to bring back the others that Niklaus had used in the ritual but she was glad that they had. Deep down she should have known that Lukas would have never let her go without a fight, he had been so understanding about why she had felt the need to keep Elena safe even though she knew that it hadn’t been easy for him but he had stayed quiet about what he was planning. Had she known then she knew that she would have told him not to risk his own life on her account and she knew that that was probably why he had kept her in the dark about it but thankfully it had all worked out in the end. Lukas, Henrik and Elena were all safe and the others who had lost their lives at Niklaus’ hands so that the ritual could go ahead had the chance to carry on living their lives. For the first time since she had woken up in the woods on the outskirts of town she didn’t have to worry about someone deciding that it was time to call in that favour and she couldn’t deny that it was a weight off her mind. Now she had the chance to live her life to the full and that meant making sure that the people she cared about were actually a part of her life. With everything that had happened she had thought that Elijah would be happy that they finally had the chance to be together but he had taken off and that alone had been enough to make her head spin. She had always prided herself on being pretty good at reading people but this time she had no idea what was going on inside Elijah’s head and she was determined to get to the bottom of it. That day she hadn’t even known if he would be home but it was a chance she had felt the need to take and thankfully it seemed to have paid off. Turning to face Elijah as he closed the door behind her, Tatia folded her arms across her chest and shook her head as he offered her a seat. “I’m fine standing,” she said, knowing that it was the only way she could keep her fear of suddenly being rejected by Elijah after everything that had happened between them in check. She knew that they were different people to who they used to be but before the ritual it had been clear to her that they still loved each other strongly but the way Elijah had been keeping his distance was enough to make her wonder whether something had changed between them. “You came back a week ago and you have been hiding out here instead of coming to tell me that you were back?” she asked, unable to keep the incredulity out of her voice as she spoke. “Stefan was back for weeks before he turned his humanity back on, that is no excuse,” she said carefully, studying Elijah as she looked over at him. As he spoke again her expression softened a little and she nodded. “It helps a little but I still don’t understand. You’ve been keeping me at a distance. Do you regret what happened between us before the ritual?” she asked as her eyes met his. If the answer was yes then she knew that it would hurt but she couldn’t stand not knowing. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Nothing good came without a price. Most would have said that was a painfully cynical way of looking at it but a thousand years of experience had taught him that cynicism was often the only way to protect his heart. While he and his siblings had fought to escape from Mikael’s relentless pursuit he had shielded that raw wound inside of him and Elijah knew he would have done so continually, clinging to the idealistic notion that he had lost the only love he would ever have. His siblings might have called it naive, especially Rebekah, who seemed to have a new love of her life every decade or so, the last blushes of a love cut off far too soon but even then feelings had run deeper than a first crush. The surface of the wound had healed for a time, soothed sparingly by those who came to force his heart open afterwards, but it had never come close to healing, not until the opportunity was presented for that first love to bloom once more. Staring down another end to their time together he had not been able to draw away even when it would’ve seemed more prudent to. Elijah had known he couldn’t stop himself once Tatia had begun to lead him to her bed, even with the knowledge that it would hurt all the more when Niklaus’ ritual succeeded. And he had known that his return to town now after weeks away would have put a gulf between them, no matter how necessary it had seemed to him to make certain she was safe.
Even now he thought it was better that she be safe and angry than still under the black cloud his brother cast. Guilt could be overcome, Tatia had proven that to him before. She’d also made it clear that she was willing to forgive him for what he had done when control had been stripped away. This time he’d been in control, he’d made the choice to step away without explanation and looking up at her Elijah now wasn’t sure what it would take to earn her forgiveness again. He stared up at her, not rising back to his feet to match her stance. The polite offer of a drink had died on his tongue at the look in her eye, the incredulity in her voice. ”Hiding is perhaps an overstatement,” he managed coolly, the shell that had shielded his emotions hard to crack even after all that had passed between them. ”And while Stefan was here, continuing to be held sway under Niklaus’ spell I was trying to find my brother, trying to make sure he didn’t return here to finish what he had started. Once I did come back I had to know whether Niklaus had sent him as a Trojan Horse, whether he was still jerking his strings from a distance.” Niklaus was certainly still jerking his strings, his brother’s control over him far greater than he would have liked to admit even after all this time. Finding the words to explain was as difficult as breaking those bonds but they were torn out of him at her quiet question. ”I don’t regret a moment of the time I had with you,” Elijah said vehemently, the mask cracking as he pushed his way to his feet. ”I meant every word I said then. I love you, I have never stopped wanting to make my life with you but a part of me has continued to wait for the heavy hand of fate to sweep in and tear my life apart again.” Wielded by his brother, by his father, by nature herself. His grief always seemed inevitable, no matter how hard he tried to hold on to things. Stretching out his hand, Elijah let his fingers hover a hair’s breadth from hers, from taking what he’d only wanted more after what had happened between them.

While she was growing up Tatia had always known that finding true love wasn’t something that happened for everyone. She had always loved the stories her parents had told her about people finding that one person they were meant to be with the way her parents had found each other but she had seen the way that other couples were in their village. Some married out of necessity and never got to experience the kind of love that her parents had shared and she had been worried that she would end up having to do the same thing. As the oldest of three children she had known that her parents would struggle to support the three of them and she had been prepared to do whatever was necessary to keep her family safe but the truth was she hadn’t planned on falling in love at such a young age yet that was exactly what had happened. She truly had loved her husband and together they had been blessed with an incredible son but her husband’s life had been cut short and she had been left to go on without him. A part of her knew that had she followed him onto his funeral pyre the way it had been expected of her then perhaps Elijah’s family and so many others would have been spared everything that had happened since but she knew better than to dwell on that too much. Chances were that Esther still would have found a way to turn her children into vampires and as it was Tatia had had the chance to experience love not just once but twice and that was more than she ever could have hoped for. She hadn’t planned on things taking the turn they had before the ritual but she was glad that they had. She had thought that after Lukas and Henrik brought her back they would have the chance to figure things out together but Elijah had left to make sure that Niklaus was far away from Mystic Falls and she couldn’t deny that it had hurt to learn that he had been back in town for so long and still hadn’t sought her out. There was only one other man she had let into her heart the way she had Elijah and after having had her heart broken once before she knew that she didn’t want to go through that again. If Elijah was having doubts and regretted what had happened between them then she knew that she would have to find a way to shield her heart once more but something told her that was going to be a lot easier said than done. For now she knew better than to jump to conclusions, she was determined to get to the bottom of what was going on and even Elijah’s cool words weren’t going to stop that. “Hardly,” she disagreed, her gaze steady as she looked over at him. While she loved Elijah he could be infuriating at times and while she understood that he wanted to protect her he seemed to do what he thought was best without any regard for what anyone else might want and that was something that she knew she couldn’t let continue. “You didn’t have to keep watch from a distance. I know Stefan and so do the others, you could have asked any one of us and we could have told you that he was back to normal.” Elijah hadn’t done that, though, instead of asking anyone he had taken it upon himself to figure it out once more and she wasn’t sure whether that would ever change. As Elijah said he didn’t regret a moment of their time together she let out the breath she hadn’t known she was holding. She was tempted to take his outstretched hand the way she had so many times before but in that moment something held her back, words that needed to be said already forming on her lips. “I understand,” she admitted as he said that he was waiting for his life to be torn apart again. “I get that you’re waiting for your life to be turned upside down again but I’m waiting for exactly the same thing. I don’t doubt that Niklaus will find out I am still alive but when he does I would much rather face him with you standing by my side. I’m human, Elijah, and I can’t count on Lukas and Henrik being able to bring me back again. One way or another something will happen that there will be no coming back from so I don’t want to waste a moment of this life I have been given,” she explained, hoping that he would understand. “If we are going to make this work then we need to be partners, we need to be able to talk to each other about everything not keep one another at arm’s length.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Some would’ve looked at him, seen only his cool demeanour, and believed that he was a man always in control, one who was certain of every thought and action. Sitting in the apartment he shared with his demon-resurrected younger brother who’d died a thousand years ago, hearing the hurt tinged words of a woman he had killed not long after Henrik had died, Elijah knew that it was a falsehood and always had been. When it came to his family, when it came to his hunger, to his heart, he had been fumbling around in the dark for so long, hand stretched out looking for something concrete and certain to grab on to. The vow had supposed been that solid handhold for him, Niklaus and Rebekah, a promise that they would keep for an eternity but with the rose coloured spectacles removed from his eyes since he’d returned to Mystic Falls Elijah had been able to see it for what it was, a slowly crumbling trap that they had all been caught in. They were not looking to protect one another, to keep each other safe, if they had been Niklaus would not have left Kol and Rebekah to rot in their coffins for so long, they would not have repeatedly sabotaged one another’s happiness in an attempt to keep the three of them together. Elijah could not say categorically when it had started to fall apart but looking into Tatia’s eyes he suspected it had been on rocky ground since the moment they had been turned.
There had been constant excuses for their behaviour, that near fruitless wish to prove that Niklaus still had an ounce of humanity inside of him. Now Elijah found himself wondering whether it was within himself he should’ve been looking. A man with a conscience should not have stayed away as long as he had. His composure was near concrete on the surface but growing cracks beneath the weight of Tatia’s gaze. His throat worked as he swallowed but he didn’t bow to her words. ”We will have to agree to disagree on that front. I was not hiding, I was watching, making certain.” Making certain of what? That Niklaus had abandoned this town and opened up the room for his elder brother to move on? Or that Tatia hadn’t returned from the other side and changed her mind? The latter was a question he should not have asked. They had confessed their love for one another before the ritual and he had trusted in it, promised not to forget it. ”I didn’t have to, no, I could have come and asked, perhaps should’ve done but for so long I’ve had to see things with my own eyes when it comes to Niklaus. He has a way of manipulating those around him, as he did when he arranged for Damon to be bitten as a parting gift.” Had Stefan returned home full of apologies for the way he had left? Likely, but it would seem he had just as much to apologise for, misconceptions to wipe away. Elijah rushed to do that, emotion finally breaking through enough that he felt his breath shudder out in time with Tatia’s. His hand remained extended, but this time she didn’t take it. ”You can rely on me to stand beside you,” he promised. ”In front of you if … when … Niklaus decides to sweep back in to see how the dice he threw here landed. It has been a long time since honesty has been so necessary, I don’t know if I’ll always be able to find it within myself. Do you still want me if I cannot make that promise?” he asked. Dark eyes dropped to the hand he kept extended. A thousand years he had wasted, an eternal life spent scrabbling to pick up pieces that would never be forged back together again. He had come so close to those pieces turning to dust in his hands, Elijah knew he could not let that happen, not let this one slip through his grasp.

From the moment she had learned that either she or Elena would die during the ritual to free Niklaus’ werewolf side Tatia’s mind had been set. While it was true that she hadn’t wanted her new lease on life to be brought to an end so quickly she had also known that she just couldn’t let Elena be the one to do it. The girl had had her whole life ahead of her and Tatia had known that there was so much that the girl had yet to experience. The same was true for her in a way, there was so much that she had missed out on but over the course of her life Tatia had been fortunate enough to have fallen in love not just once but twice and she had an incredible son to show for that first love. She had made her peace with the fact that the people she loved would have to go on without her again but she hadn’t counted on Lukas and Henrik having other plans. She should have known that her son wouldn’t give her up again without a fight but he had still surprised her although she was grateful for that. Now she knew that she wanted to make the most of her time more than ever. Ever since the ritual she had been spending as much time with the people she cared about as she could but there was one person who had been noticeably missing from her life and that was Elijah. Even now she was struggling to understand why he had kept his distance for so long but at the end of the day she knew that it didn’t really matter as long as it didn’t happen again. As Elijah said that he had been watching from a distance and making certain of something Tatia was tempted to ask what he was making certain of but the truth was that she wasn’t sure she wanted to know that answer. Ever since he left her mind had been plagued with doubts, she had often found herself wondering if he had regretted what had happened between them before the ritual but without Elijah around to confirm it either way she had done her best to push those thoughts out of her mind. For a second time she had been brought back to life and she knew better than to spend her time worrying about things that she couldn’t possibly guess the answers to. Now that Elijah was back, however, she finally had the chance to get those answers and so far he had been honest with her so she hoped that would continue. “I’ve noticed that, he won’t let anyone stop him from getting what he wants,” she nodded. That was something that she had seen in Niklaus before she died the first time but back then it had never been to the extremes that he seemed happy to go to now. “Stefan isn’t under his spell any longer, you don’t need to worry about that,” she assured him. She would be lying if she said that she hadn’t felt scared when Stefan had returned to Mystic Falls with his humanity turned off and it had stayed like that for a few months but in the end he had turned his humanity back on and for that she was glad. She knew Elijah worried more than he ever seemed to let on so in a way she couldn’t blame him but it would have been better if he had talked to them instead. As Elijah spoke again, Tatia studied him carefully for a moment. She knew that Elijah would always stand by her and she knew that she would do the same for him but she couldn’t deny that she hated being kept in the dark by him. Still, her gaze fell to the hand that was still stretched out towards her and this time as he asked if she still wanted him if he couldn’t make that promise she reached out and took it. “Nothing would stop me from wanting you,” she admitted as she lifted her gaze to meet his. “I still love you, that hasn’t changed, and if you promise me that you will try and be honest with me then that is good enough,” she assured him. She knew that Elijah wouldn’t be able to change his ways over night, he had lived his life keeping everything close to the vest for a thousand years before she was brought back so if he was willing to try then that was good enough for her. There had only ever been one thing standing in the way of any of the Mikaelsons and that was their own families. When she had given birth to Niklaus Esther must have known that her son was not the product of her marriage and so she had interceded, hiding his true nature from him until it had come roaring out on the night they had been turned, one hunger bringing another to life. By then Mikael had spent years breaking the boy down, calling him weak, belittling him at every opportunity. That desire to see the son he’d been forced to cower hadn’t lessened any over the years that he had pursued them, preventing them from ever settling to embrace the endless lives they had been given. Mikael hadn’t been the only one though, more often than not they had blocked each other’s happiness. Anything to keep the vow from being broken, to keep them all together. A thousand years and every time it looked as though they might finally find happiness, they sabotaged it. Elijah knew that Niklaus hadn’t come to Mystic Falls with his elder brother’s eternal misery in mind but Niklaus had never been able to resist twisting the knife when it was his hand guiding it. With his werewolf side finally free and those he had supposedly killed to do so back on the streets of Mystic Falls, it was not beyond reason that Niklaus would turn the blue eyes that had once been so full of innocence upon the small blessing his elder brother had managed to find here with the woman they had once both pursued.
But Tatia had chosen him, not just once, but twice. The first time he had lost her to the hunger that had burned within him, now Elijah could see himself losing her to his determination to do the opposite and keep her safe. From a distance he had spent the week watching her live her life again, spending time at the high school, with her son and those around her she had started to call friend in the time she had been in Mystic Falls. Niklaus had almost snatched the chance to do that away from her but Tatia had not let it hold her back. In a way her strength echoed that in the man who had killed her for the second time. It echoed the strength in Mikael too, the thought drawing a faint wry smile to his face for a moment. ”He is like Mikael in that way, although he would hate to hear it. They are both relentless in their pursuits.” The only exception was when it came to women and then it seemed he was the one to always win out, Elijah thought. ”I know that now,” Elijah promised, hearing Tatia’s assurances. ”I am glad he is free, nobody deserves to be Niklaus’ puppet.” Elijah knew exactly what that was like and was determined not to fall into his family’s trap any longer. He had a life here, one that he could stretch his fingertips out and touch. A woman he loved, Henrik back with them, a chance to settle if he did not sabotage this happiness himself. For a moment, as Tatia studied him, studied the hand he offered Elijah thought he had perhaps done just that but then her fingers were upon his again. ”I love you too. My absence could not change that. You have my word, I will try and be honest with you from now on. Whatever you wish to know the truth will be yours. Is there anything you wish to ask?” There had to have been questions, in the wake of the ritual, about Niklaus, about what the spell had done, the repercussions. Instead of sticking around to answer them he had run and there was more than an ounce of shame in that.

There was a time when Tatia had believed death to be final and for a thousand years it had been but in the space of a year she had been brought back to life not just once but twice. Even now she didn’t know what she had done to be lucky enough to be given so many chances but she knew better than to waste the life that she had been given. With Niklaus out of town having broken the curse that had been placed on him a thousand years before she had finally been free to start living her life without the threat of it being taken from her hanging over her head on a daily basis. She wasn’t naive enough to believe that it would last, she was human and that meant that one day her time would come to an end and there would be no more chances that could be afforded to her but she knew that was as it should be. Most of the people she cared about were immortal but she only had one lifetime ahead of her and she was determined to live it to the full surrounded by the people she loved. She had been making sure to spend as much time with Lukas, Elena, Stefan and Skylar as she could since the ritual but one person had been noticeably missing from her life and that was Elijah. She had understood when he had said that he was going to be leaving town for a while but learning that he had been back for so long without reaching out to her had been enough to fill her with doubts about what had happened the last time they had been together and she had found herself questioning things in a way that she never had before. No matter what, though, she still chose Elijah and she knew that she would every time. It had taken her a long time to figure out which Mikaelson brother held her heart the first time around but from the moment she had admitted it to herself that it was Elijah there really had been no going back. He had changed so much from the man she used to know but her Elijah was still in there and Tatia knew that she would never give up on him for making a mistake. “That’s true, they always have been but it would probably be best if you don’t say that to Nik,” she admitted, knowing that it likely wouldn’t go down too well. She didn’t know much about the relationship between Niklaus and Mikael, only those snippets of information that Nik and Elijah had chosen to share with her, but she had heard rumours before she died the first time and she was pretty sure that at least some of them were true. “So am I,” she nodded as Elijah said he was glad that Stefan was free. She had hated him seeing him like that and even though she had known that that wasn’t the real Stefan it had still scared her a little knowing that it was still a part of him. Still, now her friend was back and she knew that that at least was something to be thankful for. He could have easily turned her over to Nik but he hadn’t and she knew that she would never be able to thank him enough for that. Even though he had been doing Nik’s bidding she was certain that a part of him had still been loyal to the people he cared about. Giving Elijah’s hand a squeeze, Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful a moment as he asked if there was anything she wanted to ask. “How is Nik?” she asked at last, knowing that even though she didn’t agree with the lengths he had gone to or the lives he had taken she could understand that he had been separated from a part of himself for a thousand years. “Has he finally found what he has been looking for?” Even before his family became vampires she had always got the impression that he had been searching for his place in the world and she hoped that now he might have finally found that. If he had no anchor here in town, if Henrik and Lukas had not been able to revive Tatia after the ritual then he would never have returned to the ground that had once been his home. The vow would’ve reeled him in as it had dozens of times before, forgiveness never given entirely to Niklaus for having taken the woman he loved from him again but the two of them reuniting all the same. Cut free Elijah knew he could not have stayed away from his family. They had committed crimes before and each time the bridges had been rebuilt, decades spent with Niklaus, continually excusing his brother’s actions until something happened that split the two of them asunder again. Elijah suspected that eventually his brother would return here again and discover what had happened but still Niklaus would expect the vow to be upheld. Family came before anything else and always would, it was the three of them and would be forever more. This time he hoped he was strong enough to refuse, brave enough with the love and forgiveness Tatia had given him to stand aside. Niklaus had what he had always wanted. He had the strength to deal with Mikael if he returned. The world was his oyster if he chose to make it so and by God he hoped his brother did just that. He would be satisfied with this quiet corner of the world, with taking the opportunity that had been afforded to him here. A human lifetime with Tatia as they should’ve had a thousand years before, the chance to spend time with her son and his youngest brother. It could all be his if he could explain now why he had taken so long to be certain of his brother’s plans, why he had taken so long to make Tatia aware that he had returned to her.
Niklaus had always been relentless, despite Mikael’s attempts to break the son who had not been his. When he set his gaze upon something he would not relinquish it easily – the young slave boy in New Orleans who had eventually become a son to him of sorts, the moonstone that would eventually allow his wolf side free, his own siblings. Yet … a thousand years ago when Tatia had made her choice, his brother had stepped back. That gift was his alone, something Elijah had never stopped treasuring, but of late he had feared for it. If Niklaus was to learn that Tatia was alive, as he had once learned Katerina was in a way after she had run from them, he could demand that she was chased down too. A lifetime pursuit for someone who deserved it even less than the young girl they had turned into a monster. Elijah’s mouth curved faintly at Tatia’s words. ”That would be the quickest way to fuel Niklaus’ rage, the easiest way to hurt him.” Yet despite all that his brother had done Elijah was not willing to do that. His brother had been their father’s whipping boy for too long and he still loved the boy Niklaus had been too much to shatter him. Now Niklaus was as guilty of attempting to break Stefan Salvatore as he was of destroying his siblings’ happiness. Elijah could breath a sigh of relief that Stefan was free of him. He breathed deeply now, the tension draining from him at the squeeze of Tatia’s fingers. His expression remained stoic as his gaze ticked up to meet hers. ”I had thought he would be happier,” he admitted. ”He still seems to be searching for something. I had hoped it would be his choice to settle in New Orleans but he is stirring up trouble again, looking to make other wolves in to what he is.” And his brother was failing. How many more were going to die before Niklaus would settle for what he now had?

For a while after she had returned Tatia had wondered if she would ever find her place in the world. Everything she had once known was gone, her family had died a long time ago and she had believed everyone else she knew besides Elijah and his family to be gone. Now she knew that Lukas was still around, however, and together they had started building a life in Mystic Falls. The fact that Elena and Katherine existed was proof enough that their bloodline had lived on and that had given her some comfort while she had been unaware of her son’s fate but now they were back together again. She had her son back in her life as well as the man she loved and she had also been able to make some pretty good friends along the way. She knew that not everyone could say that so she wasn’t oblivious to the fact that she was blessed and even though she still had the looming concern of what Niklaus would do once he learned that she, Riley and Grace were alive hanging over her the ritual was over and he had what he had always wanted so she knew that she had to believe that everything else would work itself out. Leaving Mystic Falls was an option but even after everything that had happened she knew that she couldn’t leave the town behind. Since learning that it had been built on the land that her family’s home had once stood on made her feel closer to them and she was happy with the life she had started building for herself so she knew that the last thing she wanted was to uproot herself now and have to start over somewhere else even if she could convince the people she cared about to go with her. She couldn’t deny that she had felt hurt when she had learned that Elijah had kept his distance but as difficult as the ritual had been for her she knew that it must have been even more difficult for Elijah and Lukas. They had already lost her once and even though it had been her choice that she was the one who was used in the ritual instead of Elena, a choice that they had both said that they understood, she knew that it couldn’t have been easy for all of those old memories and feelings to be dragged to the surface once again. Had Lukas and Henrik not been able to bring her back then they would have had to go on without her once more so deep down she knew that she couldn’t hold Elijah’s distance against him. He had wanted to make sure that Niklaus was far away from Mystic Falls so that they would all be safe and now he was back so she knew that that was really all that mattered. “That isn’t something that either of us have ever wanted,” she nodded. While it was true that she had suspected that Mikael had been cruel to Niklaus all those years ago and rumours had circulated around their village as they had so often done she couldn’t have spared Niklaus that pain no matter how much she had wanted to. This was something he could be spared of, however, so despite how similar to Mikael they both knew he could be at times she knew that they would never speak of it while Nik was around. Now that he had freed his werewolf side she hoped that he at least felt more like he was finally the man that he was meant to be so that the ritual wouldn’t have been in vain. “From what Stefan told me it isn’t that easy. Lots of wolves have died during his attempts,” she said gently. “Riley and his friends, do you think Nik would try and make it work on them?” she asked. Ever since they had all been brought back she had found herself hoping that Riley and Grace would be able to fly under Nik’s radar. She knew that it was inevitable that her path would cross Nik’s again but she had at least hoped that the two of them would be safe although now she wasn’t so sure. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Elijah could not deny that he had caused plenty of harm to others in the thousand years that he had lived but each time it had been with the intention of protecting those that he had loved. More often than not the one being harmed was himself. With each life he had taken the blood had just grown thicker on his hands, the wounds inside of him deeper. His mother’s words had kept him from feeling the true weight of his crimes but that had not erased them entirely. When the shield between the truth and Esther’s version of it came down it had all come back, each agonising moment of that trip to his mother with the dead weight of Tatia in his arms. It was a pain that had to have been shared by his siblings at times, even if they were less likely to admit than he was himself. Niklaus had loved Tatia too, and had lost her, first to his own brother and then to death. There had been guilt over that and Elijah would have voiced it afterwards if there had not been so many other storms to weather. Mikael had been as relentless over the centuries as he had been in the two decades he had tormented the son who was evidence of his wife’s infidelity. There might not have been his blood flowing in Niklaus’ veins but that had not stopped Mikael from rubbing off on Niklaus. Callousness, recklessness, the same propensity to chase those you were looking for to the ends of the earth. There might have been something of the boy he remembered his brother to be but as he had watched his brother take Tatia’s life this time Elijah had only been able to see the reflection of Mikael.
He had waited in New Orleans, out of his brother’s view, until he had certain that his brother posed no more threat. Then, he had followed Stefan back to Mystic Falls, watching again to make certain his brother’s reach no longer extended here. He did not want to cut his brother off from the home they could have here but he was also loath to allow Niklaus to tear this town apart in his lust for an army created in his own reflection. As he had been so often in the last thousand years, Elijah found himself torn now. ”I wished so often for Mikael to stay his hand when Niklaus was young,” he admitted. ”Just to give Niklaus one day of peace or one kind word.” But it had never come. The only kindness Niklaus had known was from his siblings and from Tatia and after a time he had seemed to become blind to all of that. The muscles of Elijah’s jaw flexed as he thought of the bodies his brother was leaving in his wake. ”Niklaus is desperate for the strength they will bring him. If he can succeed he can finally be surrounded by those who are like him, who will be absolutely loyal to him.” Not that loyalty could ever be guaranteed, not when the person looking for it saw betrayal everywhere. Fire flickered into Elijah eyes as he stood and drew Tatia towards him. ”He may try but they will have me fighting to protect them. Niklaus took your lives once, I will not allow him to do that again. This time it is a matter of greed, not of need. Have you seen them since the ritual? The others who were there?” He had tried to look in upon the two used in the ritual himself and the werewolf at least seemed protected. The young girl his brother had turned into a vampire still appeared painfully alone and that had concerned him.

Knowing that her loved ones were safe and that they would look after each other after she was gone had enabled Tatia to make her peace with the fact that she was going to die again. She had told both Elijah and Lukas of her plan to hand herself over to Niklaus when the time came so that they would have some time to accept her decision but she had never for one moment thought that Lukas and Henrik would find a way to bring her back a second time. Deep down she knew that she would have realised that Lukas and Elijah wouldn’t let her go without a fight but she had honestly thought that she would never get the chance to see them again. Needless to say it had taken time to get her head around the fact that she was back with the people she loved once more but before she’d had the chance to do that Elijah had left. She understood his reasons, he had wanted to make sure that Niklaus was far away from Mystic Falls so that he wouldn’t learn that those he had killed during the ritual were alive once again but it had hurt knowing that Elijah had already been back in town for a week and hadn’t sought her out to let her know. Now she knew that she had perhaps been a little naive, for a while she had been so focused on the fact that Elijah had kept his distance that she had thought he had regretted what had passed between them during the ritual. Now she realised that no matter how difficult it must have been for her to get her head around what had happened it must have been that much worse for Elijah and Lukas. This time around they had at least been able to say their goodbyes before her life was taken but her love and her son had both been through the pain of losing her once so she knew that it couldn’t have been easy for them to have to go through that again. Thankfully this time it had only been for a short time but had Henrik’s plan not worked then it would have been much longer and she could only imagine how that would have affected them. She no longer felt the anger or hurt that had filled her when she had first learned how long ago Elijah had returned to Mystic Falls, now all she felt was sorrow. She had never meant to hurt the man she loved and even now she knew that she had done the right thing by making sure that Elena was spared but she couldn’t deny that she wished that there could have been another way. “Mikael was a Viking who had already lost one child he loved, he may not have known how,” she said gently. She knew that it didn’t excuse their father’s actions at all but she had heard rumours about the child that he and Esther had lost before they had travelled across the world and she knew that it must have taken a toll on the man. “At least Nik had you and the others, I dread to think what would have happened to him otherwise,” she added. Elijah and his siblings may not have been able to stand up to Mikael the way they may have liked to but they had at least been there for Nik and she knew that that had to have counted for something. “Loyalty brought about by fear is a fickle thing, he will not be truly happy with them,” she sighed. She knew that Nik was different to his siblings but at the end of the day they would always be his blood more than any hybrids he created ever could be. As Elijah drew her towards him, Tatia wrapped her arms around him tightly. “I’ve seen Riley around and his boyfriend Danny assured me he is getting there but I haven’t seen much of the others. I tried to reach out to the girl Nik used but it didn’t do any good.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON
