Life in Mystic Falls had been going well for Tatia but she knew deep down that it wouldn’t last. The moment she had learned from Elijah that Niklaus was on his way to town and needed either herself or Elena to complete a ritual that would free a side of himself that had been locked away a thousand years ago she had known that her fate was sealed. Even after everything that had happened she had still lived longer than Elena had and she knew that she couldn’t let the girl who had been so good to her become a pawn in Niklaus’ plan. The moment she had heard her mind had been made up, no matter what happened she knew that she needed to make sure that Elena was safe. The girl had done so much for her, she had found her a place to stay and she had also gone along with the plan that the two of them were twins so that they could both live out their lives in peace. She owed Elena and Stefan so much so even though she knew that it would mean having to leave Elijah, Lukas and her new friends behind she knew that it was something that she just had to do. She had told Elijah that if it came down to it then she would hand herself over to Niklaus to prevent any innocent lives being lost and that was something that she still planned on doing but she had yet to hear that he had actually arrived in Mystic Falls and if she was honest the wait was agonising. She had taken to making the most of every day she had but she knew that they were numbered and she knew better than to believe that she would be given a second chance again. That day Tatia had spent some time hanging out with Stefan but as he headed off to go hunting she returned to the Boarding House and was a little surprised to find that it was empty. With Damon back in town and Skylar still living there she had grown used to at least one person being at home when she got there but it didn’t take her long to realise that the house was completely deserted. Deep down she knew that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, even though she had made her peace with what was to come it was still a little overwhelming to think that she was going to end up breaking the promise she had made to Lukas again so she knew that a little time alone would probably do her some good. She hadn’t told Stefan of her plan to hand herself over although she suspected that he knew something was up. So far he had been too polite to ask, however, and for that she was grateful since she had no idea how she could look him in the eye and tell him the truth. Making her way into the living room she poured herself a glass of bourbon and settled herself down on one of the sofas, taking a sip as she tried to figure out how she was going to start writing the letter to Lukas that would explain everything after the ritual was over or how she was ever going to be able to bring herself to say goodbye to Elijah again. Inevitable. In coming to Mystic Falls Elijah had hoped to prevent his brother’s plan from coming to fruition. When he’d set out from New York he hadn’t expected to discover his first love alive and on the side of the road, hadn’t expected to discover he had been the one to take her life in the first place and certainly hadn’t expected that his presence would hasten his brother’s plans instead of delay them. He supposed that Henrik’s presence had as much to do with the change of pace as his own, as much as Katherine’s, as much as Tatia’s. The complex web that they had all unknowingly built brought the sort of uncertainty that Elijah disliked immensely. He had been unable to free his sister from Niklaus’ grasp and with his brother capturing Katherine Elijah suspected that Niklaus’ ritual would be completed sooner rather than later. With Elena and Stefan watching over Tatia she had remained free of his brother’s hands. And free of his own. Elijah had been unable to bring himself to go back to her after they had spoken at the cabin in the woods. She was safer without him there, from him and Niklaus. He could still see the blood on his hands at times, the scarlet stains spreading in the corner of his gaze, disappearing when he swallowed convulsively and made to rub it away. A part of his mind had told him that he was imagining it out of guilt but forcing himself to let go of the guilt was infinitely harder than knowing he should do it.
The guilt had tickled the back of his mind as he had climbed back behind the wheel of his car to make the journey to the Salvatore boarding house. Going to Tatia now would only provide his brother with another trail of breadcrumbs to her door but he had been unable to stop himself. If this was to be the end, if he were to spend a half dozen lifetimes in the coffin for betraying his brother and trying to prevent the death of an innocent young woman, then he wanted to do so with his conscience clear, with Tatia knowing that a thousand years hadn’t dimmed the feelings he had in his heart for her. Pulling to a stop outside the house, Elijah watched Stefan head into the woods. Hunting no doubt, a practice that would keep the ripper side he had heard of at bay but would ensure that he was just that much weaker when Niklaus came to call. At least he would be standing between the doppelgangers and his brother though, Stefan, Damon, Lukas, himself, all forming a line to protect the women who had been dragged into this against their will. Knowing that time would be upon them before they knew it, Elijah climbed from the car and approached the door, thumbing the bell as he paused in front of it. The last time he had come here had been to warn Stefan of what was approaching, now he was here to make a confession to Tatia. His mask of smooth civility was in place as the door swung open, cracking only to reveal the trace of warmth he had long thought frozen out of him when he saw who was on the other side of it. ”I hope you don’t mind me calling upon you here,” he murmured, dark eyes drifting from Tatia’s face to the woods and back again. ”I saw Stefan leave…” He didn’t know if the others were inside though, the other young girl the younger Salvatore appeared to be taking under his wing, the wayward brother who would no doubt attempt something rash if he learned who was on the doorstep.

For a long time the idea of being able to live a normal life was something that had seemed just out of reach for Tatia. Her husband had died far too soon into their married life leaving her young and afraid and alone with their baby son. She knew what was expected of her, those in her village had thought that she should follow her husband onto his funeral pyre and go with him into the afterlife as was their custom but Tatia had defied all of them, choosing instead to live and to raise her young son alone. She hadn’t wanted Lukas to lose both of his parents so she had continued to live her life only to eventually give her heart to another – Elijah. She had hoped that the two of them might one day get married and have more children but that chance had been taken from them. She no longer blamed Elijah for what had happened, she knew how difficult it was for his kind to control themselves and given that he and his family had become the first vampires she knew that he never could have known what would happen that day. It had taken her a while to find a way to move on from that but in the end she had and one thing had become painfully clear – she still loved Elijah. She knew that his feelings for her had not changed and neither had hers. She knew that things were complicated but deep down he was still the man that she had fallen in love with so many centuries ago and she loved the man that he had become now no matter how many demons lay in his past. Of course things were never going to go smoothly, things had fallen into place for Tatia to an extent after meeting Elena and agreeing that they would pass themselves off as twins and she had a place that she could call home in the Boarding House. Stefan had taken her in and he had helped her adjust to the new time that she found herself in and she knew that she would never be able to thank him enough for that. She had settled in at school and with the school year drawing to a close she knew that it wouldn’t be long before she no longer had to worry about that as much and could just enjoy the summer in Mystic Falls. Unfortunately the looming threat of Niklaus and what he had planned was still lingering over their heads, however, but they still had some time to figure it out since as far as she was aware he had yet to reach Mystic Falls. After having spent the morning with Stefan trying to find anything at all about the ritual in the books that he and Ric owned so that they could try and figure out a way to stop it she found herself alone at the house when he decided to go hunting. Damon and Skye were already out so Tatia was left to answer the door when she heard the doorbell and she was surprised to find Elijah standing before her. As he spoke her expression softened and she shook her head. “I don’t mind at all, come in,” she said, moving aside so that she could let him into the house. “Is everything ok?” she asked, her voice laced with concern as she looked over at him. Elijah had promised that he would watch over her but he had kept his distance lately so she knew that there had to be a reason for his visit, especially if he had waited for Stefan to leave before deciding to talk to her. Elijah had lived long enough to start to doubt that there was ever such thing as a second chance. Five hundred years after he had lost Tatia to his mother’s terrible grief he had thought that perhaps he had found one in Katherine. All that had resulted from him opening up his heart again was her death, her turning and five hundred years more misery. He had half heartedly followed Niklaus’ instructions, had tracked Katherine through those centuries but he had never put in half as much effort as he should’ve done and his brother had known it. Standing in that warehouse, warring over Rebekah’s body, all the bitterness over it, over the vow he had given up everything for had finally poured from his brother’s lips. It had been at that moment, as Niklaus had roared the truth about how he’d let Katherine slip from his grasp, Elijah had known that his brother would not allow it to happen again. The curse that had darkened the Mikaelsons ever since that plague had touched his eldest sister would come again, whether it be in the form of Mikael, another raging disease, or his own brother. Tatia would fall prey to it again and for a second time he would have to lose her. He had prayed that this time he would be luckier, that this time he would not be the one to slip, that he could protect her, but in his heart Elijah had known that their time together was limited. It would could to an end, no matter how hard he, or Stefan, or Lukas fought against it. That was Elijah Mikaelson’s lot in life, to bring misery and pain to others.
And yet, despite that certainty, despite the guilt that had him seeing Tatia’s blood on his hands a thousand years after it had sat upon his skin, hot and horrific, Elijah had found himself in front of the Boarding House. If time was short, if this was all the time they were to have before his and Stefan’s attempts to protect them all failed, then he needed to make the most of it. The warnings had been delivered, the attempts to shatter his brother’s ritual before it had begun failing one after another, there was little to do now but weight for that darkness to descend. One look at Tatia’s face as she opened the door and Elijah knew he hadn’t made a mistake in giving in to his weakness this time. His expression was still carefully held as he stepped past her and into the house, but the warmth had reached his eyes as he turned to face her in the confines of the hall. ”I was unsure where we stood after we spoke in the woods,” he said honestly, one hand rising to unbutton the suit jacket he had continued to wear like armour. That hand rose to run over his jaw, to slip back into his hair before he caught himself and slipped it into the pocket of his pants. ”Things are … progressing faster with Niklaus than I had hoped,” Elijah admitted as he let his dark gaze drift over the house he had first set eyes upon when he had come to call upon Stefan. ”I suppose I could have said that this was me calling upon you to warn you to be more cautious but it is more than that. There were still some things unsaid and I didn’t want them to continue going unsaid.” Not when there was every chance that soon he would no longer be there to watch over her, or more likely she would not be there for him to watch over. Their chance had been snatched away so rapidly, so violently the first time, Elijah did not want it to happen that way again.

Tatia was only young when she learned just how precious life was, little more than a child herself albeit one already with a son of her own. When her husband had died it had felt like the end of the world, her heart had shattered and she had felt like she would never feel whole again but Lukas had given her strength then and he continued to do so now. Everyone had expected her to abandon her son and follow her husband onto his funeral pyre as was their custom and it was something that she had considered but the idea of leaving Lukas was something that she had never wanted to see happen. Even now she knew that the last thing she wanted was to end up leaving him again but it was inevitable and that was something that she had made her peace with. Niklaus was planning to break the curse that had been placed on him a thousand years ago and in order to do that he needed the blood of a female from her bloodline, someone who looked just like her. Had Katherine not become a vampire to avoid being used as a pawn in Niklaus’ ritual she didn’t doubt that the curse would have been broken centuries before but the girl had been resourceful and she had found a way to escape. It was the blood of a human that was needed for the ritual which meant that the only people who could be used were herself or Elena and Tatia knew which way around it had to be. She didn’t want to leave Lukas behind again, nor did she want to leave Elijah or any of the friends she had made since she was brought back but at the end of the day she knew that she had already lived a fuller life than Elena had and her instincts to protect the girl were such that they just couldn’t be ignored so Tatia knew that it had to be her. She knew that she should tell the others of her plan to hand herself over to Niklaus when the time came but she didn’t doubt that they would try and talk her out of it if they knew the truth so that just wasn’t an option. She had already made up her mind that she would say goodbye to them in her own way but she had a feeling that was going to be a lot easier said than done. For now she knew she was just happy spending as much time with them as she could and the truth was that she wasn’t in any kind of a hurry for it to come to an end. The friends she had made during her time in Mystic Falls were such that she had never had before and she was saddened to know that she would have to leave them soon but she knew that it was much better than the alternative which would mean letting Niklaus use Elena instead. Having time to herself was something that seemed to be somewhat or a rarity these days but deep down Tatia knew that wasn’t really a bad thing. Still, she was glad of the chance to gather her thoughts a little before the knock on the door came and she found Elijah waiting on the doorstep. “There is no need to feel unsure, Elijah. I have forgiven you for what happened and I still care about you,” she assured him. The truth was that she still loved him but she wasn’t quite ready to tell him that just yet. As Elijah spoke again Tatia found herself nodding, closing the door behind him before leading the way through to the living room and sitting down. “Have a seat,” she offered as she patted the spot next to him. “What is it you wanted to say?” she added as she looked over at him. She knew that he was right, there was so much that still had yet to be said between them and she knew that now was the time to get it all out in the open. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Life was precious, even in her madness, his mother had been aware of that. She had turned her own children into monsters to make certain that their lives were not cut short. Elijah couldn’t reconcile himself with the thought that his mother had known that in ensuring her own children’s eternal lives that she would be costing countless others theirs. Esther hadn’t even slaughtered a young woman to complete her ritual, there had been some heart left at the time, enough of it that she had convinced him that she had been the one to take Tatia’s life. A thousand years later and Elijah wasn’t certain whether or not he was grateful to her for that or not. His mother’s words, the ones that had come back to him in echoes in his mind, had set him on a path that he still believed was different to his siblings’. Esther’s admonishments over keeping the blood from his hands, over keeping that monstrous part of him locked within his mind, had perhaps tied him to his humanity, keeping him anchored to it when Niklaus, Rebekah and Kol found themselves adrift from who they had been. The human part of him still regretted deeply what he had done that night. It had been an accident, he had told his mother so when he had carried Tatia to her, but even accidents could weigh heavily on your conscience, especially when you were unable to make amends for them.
That conscience had been burdened by Niklaus’ plans. One young woman had already done something dire to avoid losing her life at Niklaus’ hands, she had spent 500 years paying the price. Now that threat had been extended to Tatia, just when he had gotten her back, when Lukas finally had his mother again. Elijah wasn’t certain how much he would be able to do about it, just if he could stay his brother’s hand and avoid the betrayal Niklaus had accused him of when he’d gone to free Rebekah. He knew he couldn’t keep silent before the ritual though. He had already lost the life he should’ve had with Tatia, he couldn’t let it happen again, couldn’t let her go to her grave without knowing the truth. Some of that had been revealed on the porch of the cabin in the woods, the rest lay caught in his throat even as Tatia offered him reassurances. ”I knew that you had it in your heart to do that but I didn’t want to presume,” he murmured. ”I would not have blamed you if you could not forgive me or if your heart had grown cold towards me.” In his mind he had doubted he had deserved either, despite wanting them so badly. Perturbed by what was to come, Elijah was restless as he moved through the house in Tatia’s wake. His fingers knotted together as he silently took the offered seat, his jaw squared as he met her eye. ”I wasn’t certain that I would be able to tell you that I still cared about you too either before the ritual or after it.” The word love caught in his throat as he loosened his hands, as he reached out to her with one. ”If I prevent what Niklaus is set to do then I will not be here afterwards, he will punish me for betraying him again. Until his pride no longer stings I would spent decades in a coffin. If I cannot prevent it … if I were to lose you again … it would not be without clearing the air, without knowing…” Whether or not he would had been the one in her heart at the last. He was prepared to give his own life, his own freedom for hers, his existence in return for that of the woman he loved.

Tatia had grown up hearing rumours of things that were beyond natural and even as she had begun her adult life those stories had continued from her husband. He had told her all about his family, about the magic that ran through their veins but seemingly not through his, and she had heard that the same magic flowed through Elijah’s veins. Deep down she had never truly believed it since she had never seen anything like it for herself but she had always tried to keep an open mind since there was a chance that Lukas would grow up to inherit that same kind of magic. She had never imagined even half of what was truly possible, however, and that had landed her in trouble more than once so she knew better than to make that same mistake again. This time the one looking to use magic was someone that she had once known well, someone that she had loved, and while she understood that Niklaus must have been going through a difficult time having been cut off from a part of himself for so long she refused to let him use an innocent girl to achieve his own goal. Only Elijah knew of her plan to hand herself over to Niklaus when the time was right but she knew that she was going to have to come clean to Lukas before it was too late as well. She had only just been reunited with her son and she hated the fact that she was going to have to break her promise to him by leaving him again but she knew that there was no other choice. She didn’t doubt that Elena would give her life if it came down to it but despite having been dead for a thousand years Tatia knew that she had still been able to experience so much more that life had to offer than the younger girl had so she knew that she wasn’t going to let Elena sacrifice herself. As Elijah spoke, Tatia shook her head and her smile grew kind. “My heart could never grow cold towards you Elijah and it hasn’t towards Niklaus either. You aren’t to blame for what happened, your mother wanted to make sure that she didn’t lose another child and you couldn’t control yourself. Do not blame yourself for a moment more,” she said, reaching across and giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “I’m glad you did, it helps knowing that even though my time back will be short that I got to experience that once more,” she admitted. There was still so much that she wished that she could have done but she had experienced enough to know that when she did die it would be with no regrets. This time she at least knew that it was coming so she finally had the chance to tie up any loose ends like the one she had with Elijah. As soon as Elijah said that if he managed to stop the ritual then he would not be around afterwards her eyes widened and she tried to speak but this time words failed her. No matter what happened she couldn’t imagine a world without Elijah there in it and it was something that she hoped that she would never experience. It was only as his voice trailed off that she managed to speak again although she studied him carefully for a moment first. “Without knowing what, Elijah?” she asked gently, already knowing in her heart the words she wanted him to say. There was a price to eternal life, that had been proven when their mother’s spell hadn’t only left them impervious to harm but had given them an endless thirst too. Nature could not abide a shift in power as great as Esther had attempted, it had to balance the scales. His entire eternal life he had believed that this endless wandering, the unceasing deaths, were that cost. Never a love to last, never a century of peace before Mikael, Kol or Niklaus did something to shatter the lives they had started to build. Elijah had seen opportunity after opportunity snatched away with one rash action. Arriving in Mystic Falls it had seemed like perhaps for once the scales had balanced in his direction, a blessing bestowed. Only those scales of fate were now swinging wildly, tipped not only by Niklaus’ hand but by Tatia’s as well. Looking at her now, studying the sweet smile that had almost split the brotherly bond between himself and Niklaus, Elijah knew that he had no chance of convincing her not to hand herself over to Niklaus. There had always been a steely determination about her, a drive to do the right thing whether it be to stand against the pressure to join her husband in the afterlife or give up her second chance at the life she should’ve been able to live for a young woman barely starting her first. As much as he wanted to plead with her not to shatter the first respite he had known for centuries, he could not bring himself to do it. His only hope was to stop Niklaus another way and prevent the ritual from occurring in the first place.
His chances of that were slight enough that he had known he had to come to the Boarding House today and risk the wrath of Stefan Salvatore to say his piece. He could not let Tatia go once again with those words still trapped in his throat. It felt as though they were fluttering there like birds caught in a cage. Forgiveness had not yet freed them, the ability to do that was solely in his own hands. ”It has not been simple to set that self-recrimination aside. I spent a thousand years in blissful ignorance of what I’d one. I blamed her, turned all of my grief against my mother.” Against Niklaus too, the rational part of his mind reasoned. ”I could understand her reasons, just not her method, not when we were suffering still.” Not when their father made it his eternal life’s mission to end them all. Those trapped birds fluttered at the squeeze of her hand. Elijah let out a long breath, steadying himself. The words were beginning to fly free but there was still more to say. Following Tatia through the house, he used those words he had rewritten in his head a hundred times in the last few days. ”It is a small blessing,” Elijah agreed hoarsely. ”To know that our last moment wasn’t one where you were afraid of me this time.” There would be no forgetting this time. He was going into it with his eyes wide open and would take his punishment either way. Elijah watched those familiar dark eyes widen at his words, her mouth open silently as though trying to speak, and almost wished he could have hidden the possibility of Niklaus’ damnation of him from her but she deserved to know the truth, to hear it from his mouth. The hovering hand rose that last inch, fingers gracing the curve of one cheek as he found the strength in his voice. ”Without knowing that I love you,” he admitted. ”I’ve never stopped loving you, not in the thousand years I was forced to live without you.” Though others had opened his heart again, had dwelt there for a time a part of it had always belonged to the first woman he had ever loved.

The world Tatia had found herself in when she woke up that day in the woods had seemed overwhelming and terrifying at first but now she found it to be incredible. Elijah and Lukas were both still alive a thousand years after they should have died of old age and both Niklaus and Rebekah were too. That kind of thing would have seemed impossible when Tatia was growing up but now she found herself living in a world where the dead could be brought back to life and where magic and vampires were real so she was starting to believe that just about anything was possible. She still didn’t know what she had done to deserve a second chance at life or who had sought to give it to her but the truth was that she had stopped looking for answers to that question for the time being. No one had found her expecting a payment of some kind for achieving the impossible so she knew better than to worry about it now that there were much more pressing issues at hand. She didn’t know how long she had left before the ritual would be taking place or just what Niklaus had planned for the meantime but her mind was already made up and she knew that nothing would change it. She had told Elijah about what she planned to do and she knew that she would tell Lukas soon too so that he would have time to prepare himself for what was to come and they would get the chance to say a proper goodbye this time but other than that she knew that she couldn’t tell anyone else. Stefan and Elena would no doubt try to stop her but the fact remained that either she or Elena would be used for Niklaus’ ritual and she refused to let the younger girl be a part of it. Tatia knew that she had some unfinished business to take care of and she refused to leave the world with any regrets this time around. She had seen the man that her son had grown up to be without her and words couldn’t even begin to describe how proud she was of him. As for Elijah, he was still the man she remembered and even though a lot had happened since they were first together she knew he was still the same person who would do the right thing regardless of the cost to himself. “I know it hasn’t been easy but you need to learn to forgive yourself Elijah, otherwise you will be carrying those demons around with you forever,” she assured him gently. “I know things have been difficult for all of you but I also understand a mother’s need to protect her children, it is the same instinct that I have towards Lukas. Do not judge her too harshly, had she not done what she did then we wouldn’t be here now,” she added, bringing her hand up and letting it rest gently against his cheek as she spoke. It was true that things could have worked out very differently had Esther not turned her children into vampires but they also would not have been reunited and had the time together that they had done so there was something good that had come out of it in the end. “I’m not afraid of you, I trust you completely,” she nodded. When she first remembered what had happened she had felt that same fear once again but as she spent time with Elijah she had come to realise that he was still the man she remembered from when he was human and she had since seen firsthand how difficult it could be for vampires to control themselves so she knew better than to fear him now. As Elijah’s hand touched her cheek she leaned into the touch and she felt a smile form on her face at his next words. She had never thought that she would hear those words again and it made her heart ache to think about the fact that they would never get the chance to be together but it also warmed her to know that he still felt the same way that he had back then. Without even thinking about it she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him gently. “I love you too,” she breathed as the kiss broke. “I’ve never stopped.” She knew in her heart that it was true, even when she had feared Elijah she had still loved him and that feeling hadn’t changed. “No matter what happens my heart will always belong to you,” she added as she moved her hand and let it rest against his own heart. “I know you plan to try and stop Niklaus but I must ask you not to. You promised me you would look out for Lukas when I couldn’t and I want you to keep that promise. He is going to need you and I can’t stand the thought of a world without you in it,” she said gently. She knew Niklaus well enough to know that he wouldn’t stop until he had achieved his goal so the last thing she wanted was for Elijah to put himself at risk when the outcome would still remain the same. Was this what his mother had felt when plague had stolen her first born from her? Had she been wracked with guilt when she’d cheated upon Mikael with one of the local werewolves or when the son that had been born of that illicit relationship had returned with her youngest child slain by those wolves? Or had that inner torment only arrived when Esther finally realised that she had turned her remaining children in to monsters? Something had certainly driven his parents to attempt to kill them all and the only explanation Elijah had ever been able to find that absolved Esther or Mikael at all was that all of their actions had been borne of guilt. For centuries he had carried his own with him, seeing it as the human part of himself but it was only when Tatia had returned, had revealed to him who had taken her life, that the true scope of his own guilt was returned. It could’ve driven him from her entirely and left Tatia to deal with his brother on her own but the part of him that had always loved her had known that he had to fight instead – to change her mind about who he truly was, to protect her in the way he had been unable to in the past. Now it seemed that Tatia bore no blame towards him, that only existed inside of himself. Elijah wasn’t sure how easy it would be let that guilt disappear like blood washed from his hands. He had tried, truly he had in the last few months, but still, as Tatia told him again that he needed to forgive himself, Elijah was certain he could still see the blood on his hands, those blooming stains that had driven him to his mother with Tatia’s body in his arms in the first place.
Burdened as he was by it though, he would be no good in stopping Niklaus and that was the one thing he knew he had to do to assuage himself of all of this. Once he had broken his promise to Tatia about watching out for her son, Elijah didn’t plan on doing so again. Slowly he nodded, letting the mask fall away under the gentle touch of Tatia’s hand. ”What she did for us was monstrous but she did it with good intentions.” Would a human life then have been better than this eternal life here? A few short months ago he would have said yes but now Elijah turned his face against that palm, closing his eyes for a heartbeat. ”Your trust is what’s allowing me to forgive myself finally,” he admitted. Fear would only have drawn this out, the look that had been in Tatia’s eye once more at the side of the road a stark reminder of his crimes. That look had driven him to try and do the right thing now, to put a stop to Niklaus’ scheme. Power should not have been the goal, this should’ve been from the very start … love. Elijah felt it swell in his chest at the smile that his words drew from her. As Tatia wrapped her arms around his neck Elijah stepped closer, her lips finding his for the first time in a thousand years. ”I don’t want to lose you,” Elijah whispered as their lips had parted. Eyes opening, he looked down at the face he knew so well with concern in his eyes. ”I want to look out for the both of you. This time my promise will stand, I will always watch over him, whether I manage to stop this or not. If I were to succeed Niklaus would trap me in my coffin but not forever and while I am gone you would be there with your son. Surely a world with me hidden and you in it is better than one with me living and you gone.” He knew that to Tatia it would not be better, she would not have tried to draw the promise from him again if she thought as he did. Her only thought was protecting Lukas, protecting Elena … protecting him.

Tatia would be lying if she said that there weren’t times since she had been brought back when she had found herself wondering just what her future with Elijah might have been like had things worked out differently. They could have raised Lukas together and had children of their own one day before growing old together but that future had been taken away from them. Now she was the only one out of the three of them who could possibly grow old and she knew that even that wasn’t going to happen. She had meant it when she had said that she didn’t blame Elijah for his actions, when they first met at the side of the road she had been shocked to remember that he had been the one to attack her and she had been scared then but knowing what she did now about vampires she knew that it wasn’t something that he could have controlled even if he had wanted to. She had heard stories about witches and men who turned into wolves back then and even her own husband had come from a bloodline that carried magic with it despite the fact that that magic had never manifested in him but the truth was that she hadn’t truly believed in any of it until she had seen it with her own eyes. Now her son was an immortal warlock and the man she loved was one of the first vampires that the world had ever known. It still seemed incredible to her even now but it was the way that things had worked out and she had learned to accept that. She loved them both regardless and she knew that nothing would ever change that. She knew that they had both done things that they regretted but at the end of the day they had become good men who cared about the safety of others and for that she was glad. Even now she hated that her time with them would end up being so short but at least this time she had the chance to tie up some loose ends. As Elijah spoke, Tatia’s expression softened. “I’m glad that if nothing else I at least got to do that for you,” she admitted gently. There was still so much that she wished that she could have had the chance to do but since she didn’t know exactly how much time she had left she knew better than to waste it wishing for things that could have been. Instead she knew to make the most of whatever time she had left and she was glad that that weight seemed to have finally been lifted off of Elijah’s shoulders at last. She no longer blamed him for what had happened and she hadn’t wanted him to blame himself either. Kissing Elijah was impulsive but it was something that she had been wanting to do for a long time and as he said that he didn’t want to lose her, Tatia’s lips met his once more. “I don’t want to lose you either but no matter what happens I’ll always be watching over you,” she whispered, nothing but love in her eyes as they met his. “You might think that a world with me in it and you trapped in a coffin would be better but it wouldn’t, not for me. You know Niklaus as well as I do Elijah, he will not be stopped even if you succeed in your plan. He will find another way to break the curse and when he does he will come after me anyway, or worse he will come after Elena. You have always been the only person that he listens to and without you there I dread to think how many more innocent people would die so he could achieve his goal. I can’t have that threat looming over my head. It is better that this happens now on my own terms so I can have the chance to say my goodbyes than for the end to come with no warning at all,” she explained, hoping that he would understand. “Just the thought of leaving you, Lukas and the friends I have made breaks my heart but this started with me and it has to end with me, it is the only way. Please tell me you understand.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

This wasn’t enough. Elijah wanted to whine the words as a child might, stomping his foot in that immature demonstration of his frustration. Their time had been snatched from them by his family’s desperation once and now it was happening again and there was so little he could do about it. Few things had meant as much to him in the centuries that he’d lived and those that had even come close had always been set aside for his family. Love was snatched from him time and time again, always as soon as it had felt like he would have a life outside of his siblings. For the sake of the vow he had made in the wake of their turning he had set aside love, happiness, pride and more times than he would once have admitted, his sanity. It had all been for Niklaus, for Kol, for Rebekah, their desires always more important than his own. There was a part of him ready to toss that aside now, for the first time in those thousand years, but the wiser part of him knew that he would no longer be the man he was always purported to be. The selfish Elijah Mikaelson, snatching for his own happiness while his brother continued to suffer, trapped within his mother’s shackles. That was the way to Niklaus would paint it, playing on the sympathies of all of those too blind to see through his brother’s mask. But it wasn’t too much to ask was it? To have more than just a moment’s happiness in a thousand years, to hope that the woman he’d never stopped loving would be allowed to live the life with her son that had been taken from her before. Obviously it was too much, Elijah knew that he would never be allowed to watch that happen, his mother had thrown the scales of fate far too out of balance for that.
At least this time he would not forget the truth behind Tatia’s death. There would be no hiding from his role in it, even if that meant that it weighed more heavily on his conscience. His failure to find another way for his brother to break the spell would result in her death again, to make that easier for her Elijah knew he would be fully prepared to lie. He didn’t have to now though, didn’t bother hiding the weight still on him as he lowered his head slightly, his cheek still in the haven of her hand. ”I wanted us to have more this time,” he said hoarsely. ”I wanted you to have more than a few months with Lukas.” He wanted time for them to move on, to have a part of what they should’ve done during their mortal life together. It was foolish to believe that fate would give him more and Elijah knew that it was foolish that he thought he could come here tonight and step away without this happening. In the touch of Tatia’s lips a thousand years peeled away and rushed back in a heartbeat. The kiss made the approaching loss all the harder, tearing the words hoarsely from his throat. The grief was already there, shining in eyes unshielded for once. ”There’s no way we can both be happy,” he managed with certainty as he lowered his head again to rest his brow against hers. ”One of us will end up alone. Either I go into my coffin knowing you’re living the life you should with Lukas, or you go to the other side knowing that I will look after him this time.” She was right, he knew that but still the words landed like blows. Niklaus had waited 500 years to try and break the spell again, he would wait once more, would be as patient as he had to be to take another young life. Swallowing hard, Elijah nodded. ”I understand but this breaks my heart already. Niklaus gets his way and we both lose again.” They would have just this one shining moment that he needed to make the most of. Eyes slamming shut, his heart already raw and bloody in his chest, Elijah kissed her again, all his fear, his grief, his love, pouring out in that one fierce gesture.

Ever since Tatia had first learned about the ritual Niklaus planned on performing she had found herself wishing that there was some other way. She had thought about being selfish and staying as far away from Elijah and the others as she could but in her heart she had known that she couldn’t have done that even if she had wanted to. If she had kept her distance then it meant that Elena would be the one who would be used so that Niklaus could unlock his werewolf side and she knew that she couldn’t let that happen. No matter what she felt like she had to keep Elena safe, the girl had done so much for her since they met and Tatia knew that this was the only way that she could show just how much that had meant to her. For the last few months Elena had been a friend to her, a sister as far as those who didn’t know the truth were concerned, and Stefan had been her willing host. She knew that she owed it to them to make sure that they at least had a chance at having their happy ending even though it would mean that she would never get the chance to have her own. She didn’t know when the ritual would be taking place but if nothing else she was thankful for the time she had been able to spend with the two of them as well as Lukas, Elijah and the other friends she had made during her time in Mystic Falls. This time she at least had the chance to do things right, she could say goodbye to Lukas and Elijah the way that she hadn’t been able to the first time around and she could put her affairs in order so she knew that it would soon be time to start thinking about doing just that. For now, however, she was glad that she was able to spend some time with Elijah. For such a long time so many things had remained unsaid between them and that was something that she knew needed to change. She was determined to leave this time with no regrets and that meant finally being honest with Elijah. So much had changed between them but the way she felt about him still remained, in fact it seemed to have grown a lot stronger during the time that she had been back, and she knew that it was about time she told him that. “I wanted that too but I’m grateful for the time I have been able to spend with both of you,” she admitted gently. The time she had been able to spend with them was something that she cherished and she hoped that when she told Lukas of her plan to hand herself over to Niklaus when the time came that he would understand. She didn’t want to leave either of them, she knew that she would never want that, but she also knew that she couldn’t let someone else die so that she could live especially when she had already been given one second chance. As Elijah spoke, her expression softened. “The fact that I even got given this second chance is incredible. Even if things hadn’t worked out the way they had then I would have died a long time ago but I got to see you and Lukas again and I can’t let someone else give up their life for mine,” she explained. She wasn’t even sure if it would make sense to Elijah but she knew that she wouldn’t be able to live with herself if someone else got hurt because of her. As he spoke again, before Tatia could even respond Elijah’s lips were pressing against hers once more and she closed the distance between them as she kissed him back, pouring everything she had into that one kiss. As it finally broke, she let her gaze meet Elijah’s once again. “No matter what happens we have this time together now and no one can take that away from us,” she said, running her hands gently down his arms before taking his hands in hers. “What do you say we make it count?” she suggested, pressing a gentle kiss to his lips before taking a step backwards and pulling him along with her in the direction of the stairs. When Katerina had run, when she’d chosen to turn herself rather than allow Niklaus to kill her, when he’d sworn to his brother that he would chase her down until he found her, Elijah had been able to look back with the certainty that he should never have opened his heart again. Not caring for the doppelganger who’d had the ill luck to stumble into his brother’s path would not have made her death much easier to swallow but it would’ve saved some of the heartache for both of them. Getting involved with him had almost guaranteed Katerina’s death from the start, as being involved with his family had once almost guaranteed Tatia’s death. To fall for someone was to paint that target on their back. Despite the feelings that had not once faded in a thousand years he’d had no intention to make the target already upon Tatia any bigger. However this situation played out there was going to be heartbreak, another abyss built between them by his brother. If he tossed aside his vow then he would be the one torn away, leaving Tatia at his brother’s mercies at some point in the future, bereft of his protection, if he did as she asked and backed down then he would spend another thousand years with that raw hole still through the heart of him. It would have been wiser to shield his heart now and in doing so shield Tatia’s but Elijah knew that he’d been powerless to step away, as powerless as he had been to stop himself falling in love with her in the first place.
This should’ve been the moment where he stepped back, his words finally spoken aloud but not explored. This was the moment where the shield around his heart was still partially in place, offering enough courage to have him do all that he meant to do but Elijah stood frozen, anchored in place with Tatia’s hand. ”I should be more grateful for it. I never dreamed that I would get you back, let alone have more time with you or you with Lukas.” Perhaps later it would be a comfort but for now he was still torn, part of him on either side of that gulf. Dark lashes fluttered as his eyes rose to meet hers. ”If they hadn’t worked out the way they had, we could have grown old together. I would not deny anybody the chance we did not have, you have my word on that,” he finally vowed hoarsely. He would do what he had failed to do the first two times and he would protect the young doppelganger, he would ensure that Elena could live and grow old, although it would kill him inside to do so. That death had already started as he kissed Tatia, the mourning for what they would lose leaving him aching inside. When the kiss broke Elijah kept his head down, expecting an end to come of this but then as his eyes opened, Tatia’s were on his, the words he’d felt incapable of saying on her lips. He stood silent as her hands trailed down his arms to finally take his hands. ”We’ll make it so that we both win for now,” he managed hoarsely. ”No pushing the memory of this away, I’ll carry it with me for the next thousand years. I love you.” Elijah allowed himself to be tugged along at first and then found his feet as his heart felt like it crushed down in his chest and then swelled back up into his throat. He loosed his hands from hers, moving closer to scoop her up in his arms and start to carry her up the stairs, his mouth finding hers again as he propelled them both up to the second floor of the Boarding House.

When she was growing up Tatia had always believed that death was final. It had been that way for her husband and for everyone else she had ever loved and lost but for her it hadn’t worked out that way. Somehow a thousand years after she died she had been brought back and she had been given a second chance at having the life that had been taken from her so many years before. It had taken some getting her head around at first especially after she remembered that it was Elijah who had taken her life in the first place but despite her initial fear of him and what he had become the more time she had spent with him the more she had started to see that he was still the man she had fallen in love with in the first place. A thousand years and so many things that even now she didn’t know hadn’t been enough to change Elijah completely, the man she had fallen for was still in there and he had proved that to her time and time again. Learning that Lukas was still alive after all had been the one thing she had needed to help her forgive Elijah completely but she had done so and she had let him back into her heart once more. It pained her to know that their time together would be short once again but she knew that any time together was better than none at all. She knew that would probably be little comfort for Elijah or Lukas to start with but in time she hoped that they would see things the way she did. In a way Tatia knew that it probably would have been better for both of them if things had stopped after they both revealed that they loved each other but in her heart she knew that she needed to be completely honest with Elijah in case it was the last chance she got to do so. Things had remained unsaid between them once before and events had taken a turn that had ensured that she would never get the chance to say all that she wanted to so she knew better than to make that same mistake again. “I think what happened is proof that second chances are given no matter how unlikely they might seem,” she said gently. She had never thought that any of this would happen to her, that she would get the chance to see the people she loved again after so many years, but she had and for that she was thankful. She knew that Elijah struggled with certain things that had happened in his past but she hoped that eventually he would see that the past didn’t define who any of them were, it was what they chose to do with their lives after that. As he spoke again, her expression softened. “I can’t deny that I wish we’d had the chance to settle down and have a family together but life had different plans in store for us so we just need to be thankful for the time we have been able to share.” No matter what happened she knew that she would never regret any of the time she had spent with Elijah, Lukas or any of her friends, she cherished every moment and with any luck they did too. Tatia knew that she should have pulled away after the kiss, that she should have done all she could to protect Elijah’s heart given that they both knew that the ritual would soon be upon them, but she couldn’t bring herself to do that. She wanted Elijah to hold onto the fact that she loved him so that he wouldn’t give into the darkness and if their time together truly was going to be over soon she knew that there was no point in holding back now. “I love you too, never forget that,” she said gently. As Elijah scooped her up into his arms she couldn’t deny that she was surprised but she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back. “Second door on the right,” she breathed as they reached the top of the stairs, glad that if nothing else they could have at least one good day together to hold onto.
