━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ River can't help but wonder why life doesn't come with its own manual ━ ready with all the answers to every existential question that he may have that'd keep him up at night otherwise if he doesn't have the answer to it right away. How do we measure life? Are we in control of our lives? How do we know if we are doing the right thing? Why did he kiss Tobi? Why does he feel a certain way when it comes to men?
... What?
Stop thinking about it.
That's what he's been trying to tell his brain but ever since that dam-- darn -- day, all he could ever think about was the feeling of Tobi's lips against his own. The day after, he panicked. He couldn't stop it, couldn't do anything about it, he couldn't do anything other than panic. Instead of facing his own emotions and deciphering what the really mean, he chooses to run like a coward and that's because he was. He was nothing other than a coward. He buried himself in his work, chose to come back home late most nights hoping that Tobi would be asleep by then but what he never expected was to see another man in the apartment and he really didn't have to "read the room" to know what had happened. Instead, he offered the other a tight-lipped smile and passed by him, making his way to his kitchen.
Okay, so, Tobi hooked up with some guy. Cool, yeah. It doesn't bother him. It shouldn't bother him, especially when he'd spent the majority of the past couple of days just running away from the guy instead of confronting his feelings head-on. Nope, it doesn't bother him because he has no right to feel bothered.
But god, really? In his apartment? Right where he could walk in on them? Does he have no concern for that? No respect? But, suddenly, it turned from him being upset that it happened under his roof to the fact that it happened at all because a part of him carried this sick and twisted feeling... This anger that he couldn't quite explain and that crap ate him up the entire night. He tossed and turned until the birds started calling and he soon realized that he had stayed awake the entire night. Sure, there were some tabs open where he has searched the following: bad feeling when you see your friend with another guy or am I homophobic for hating to see my friend with another guy? angry at my friend for hooking up but those tabs didn't mean anything, of course. He was just... curious.
Yeah.
River got up when he decided to give up on falling asleep and headed to the kitchen to get himself a cup of coffee and as he watched the milk fall into the cup, there was a brief moment where he saw a cross illusion in the cup which made him blink a few times before he released a brief scoff. Yeah, alright. As if he needed to feel any shittier. He wondered for a moment what his dad would think. What would the pastor think if he learned that his only son had kissed a man? River hung his head again with a defeated sigh falling from his lips. He turned around only to release a gasp that sounded like an animal meeting its demise when he saw a glimpse of Tobi. Before he could run off, though, it became clear that it was too late and instead of his usual chirpy 'good morning', he only made a move to pass by Tobi without saying much of anything.

Tobi and River had turned into ships that passed in the night. As soon as he came home from work River’s bedroom door would quickly close shut. Tobi knew it wasn’t intentional either. He knew River was avoiding him. Goddamnit. Tobi should have never suggested they kiss. He should have shown his cool magic tricks and gone to bed. Then a few days later a message from Kace popped up on his phone, inviting him out for a drink. Tobi didn’t reply straight away, giving himself a few minutes to consider the offer. It dawned on him how pissed he actually was with River. So, he agreed to meet Kace the following evening at Campell’s bar. Of course one drink turned into several drinks which led up to Tobi inviting Kace back to his apartment, which was arguably not okay, but whatever. If River had a problem with it he could actually speak to Tobi about it—like an adult—instead of scurrying around the apartment, terrified of accepting his own sexuality. But then again Tobi could have been the bigger person and confronted River days ago, but the more time that passed the more pissed he became. Was their friendship ruined? Broken beyond repair? Tobi tried to push that thought from his mind. Tobi drifted back off to sleep just after bidding farewell to Kace. An hour later he was awoken to the sound of someone in the kitchen. He peeled his eyes open, immediately met with a slamming headache and a mouth so dry he was convinced he’d been eating sand the night before. The glass beside his bed was empty. He rolled out of bed, letting out a quiet groan as he picked the glass up. River was standing in the kitchen when Tobi emerged from his room. Tobi considered dipping off into the bathroom to grab water from there, but why should he do that? Why should he be avoiding River? He had nothing to be ashamed about. River spun around, not expecting to see Tobi standing just behind him. He lifted his empty glass, “Just need to get some water.” He gestured towards the tap behind River before he moved past him. “Wait a second.” He said to River just as he was filling his glass up. Before he could speak to River though he needed water. His month was practically glued together. He quickly downed half the glass of water, instantly feeling better. “So… is this our life now? You hiding in your bedroom and ignoring me cause you’re feeling a little ashamed that you kissed a guy?” He brought the glass up to his lip, finishing the rest of the water before turning back to fill his glass up again. ━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ River nodded his head slowly at Tobi's words. "You do that." He offered back only to frown slightly because why did he even feel the need to say something like that? He was about to run to his room and the only thought running through his head in that particular moment was: don't say anything, don't say anything, don't say anything. But he came to an abrupt halt when Tobi said something because why would something he was hoping for actually come to fruition? Clearly it meant nothing for you if you hooked up with that guy. That's what he almost said but, of course, River bit his tongue because it was not a wise thing to say. "I'm not ignoring you." He answered while practically still giving Tobi his back. He was still looking down at his drink, finding it too difficult to lift his head up and look at Tobi properly. "I've just been busy, that's all." River said, feigning nonchalance as he spoke.
"And clearly so have you, so my absence clearly doesn't matter that much, does it?" And the words escaped his lips before he could stop any of them and regret immediately settled heavily in the pit of his stomach as he risked a glance over his shoulder at Tobi. "Look, what I'm trying to say is that I'm not ashamed of... what happened. I'm not." He really wasn't ashamed, but it was a lot for him to wrap his head around. He couldn't deal with it well enough, especially with the guilt that settled right after, the thought of am I doing something wrong? should I not want this as much as I do? And sadly enough, he was the one left with the responsibility of answering those questions for himself. "Happy now?"

As soon as he woke up fully a strange sensation of guilt cut through him like a hot knife, which then angered him. Why was he feeling guilty about sleeping with a man? He was single with zero ties to anyone. He could do whatever the fuck he wanted. He hated the feeling which was stewing inside of him and it was all because of River. “Busy, huh?” Tobi watched as River retreated back, feeling a knot tighten in his chest. The way River barely turned to look at him, the way his words were filled with such restrained emotion, it was almost too much to bear. “What’s that supposed to mean?” He shot back. Clearly Kace hadn’t slipped out undetected. Fuck. The guilty feeling hit him again, washing over him rapidly. No, he wasn’t accepting it. He refused to feel bad about sleeping with Kace and he refused to let River determine how Tobi felt about it. A frown cut across Tobi’s face as River asked if he was happy now. As though he’d just provided an excellent reason as to why he was obviously ignoring Tobi. “Happy?” He let out a quiet chuckle in disbelief, “Course I’m not happy River. You’ve been avoiding me. Don’t bullshit me.” He slowly lowered the glass down, placing it on the counter top. He was mere seconds from blowing over and the first thing to go would be the glass. Shards of glass would scatter across the kitchen, proving to Tobi that River did in fact have control over his emotions. RIVER MAY

━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ River should have known that it wasn't going to be that easy to convince Tobi that there was nothing wrong because as much as he hated it right now, Tobi knew him. "Nothing, alright? It's nothing." River shot back because the last thing he wanted was to explain that the reason behind that feeling that nestled in his chest was the fact that he had spotted the guy leaving his apartment and even though there were no words exchanged, he knew all too well what had happened and River was fully aware that he had no reason to feel this jealous, but he just couldn't help it, not when it was so overwhelmingly obvious.
"Why would I be avoiding you, Tobi? We live together, it'd be impossible to avoid you anyway." River didn't believe a single word that just escaped his lips but he'd always been terrible at confrontations and it showed, even now.
"You did nothing wrong for me to be avoiding you." And it was the truth. He didn't do anything wrong. River took in a deep breath before releasing it as if readying himself for something and that was just him preparing for when he'd turn around to face Tobi because he knew that he can't exactly do this without looking at him because it was far from convincing and he knew that. He knew that a little too well. He finally turned around to look at him, ignoring the memories that came rushing back of how it had felt like to kiss Tobi that night. He cleared his throat and blinked a few times, trying his hardest not to let it show that he was thinking about it. "Can you believe that, at least?" By that he meant that Tobi hadn't done anything wrong.

Tobi's eyes narrowed as he studied River's face, searching for the truth behind the hurried words and evasive demeanour. He knew River well enough to recognise when he was lying. The weak explanations and the unconvincing reassurances. “Is this something to do with Kace?” Tobi had no patience to be dancing around the subject any longer. Rip the bandaid off and let it bleed. Um… maybe because we kissed?— Tobi silently cursed himself for thinking this exact situation wasn’t going to happen. He should have known kissing River would lead to ongoing awkward exchanges. “Is it? ‘Cause you’ve been doing a good job of avoidin’ me.” Even if they weren’t seeing each other there would have been a few messages exchanged between the pair. But now it was like they were just roommates, not even friends. Tobi's mind raced back to that night they had shared, the connection they had felt. It had been real, and now, with River's awkward avoidance and the palpable tension, Tobi couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed. “I know I’ve done nothing wrong.” Inviting Kace back to the apartment was wrong, but Tobi was about to admit to that now. “If you wanna keep lyin’ to me then fine.” He said with a shrug of the shoulders, pretending like he was completely unbothered by the situation, which was of course not wrong. It was eating away at him. RIVER MAY

━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ The only corrupt thought that ran through his mind in that particular moment was: Oh, so that’s his name, huh? But honestly, why was he so annoyed by this? It wasn’t like they were in some sort of serious relationship. They were friends, for God’s sake. Friends should be happy for each other for finding a partner, even if it was just for a night, so why did he feel anything but happy? “Nope.” River answered with a shake of his head. “Why would it have something to do with him?” He asked, glancing down at his drink with a small frown tugging at his features because he really did sound anything but honest. God, he sucked at this. He sucked at confrontations, especially when it had something to do with his sexuality — a topic he had poked at with a stick from afar but never, ever gave himself a chance to make peace with it.
“I’m not avoiding.” He said again, hoping that he’d believe it this time. But he knew that he made it hard for Tobi to believe him because he didn’t even believe half of the crap that he was saying right now. No matter how hard he tried, it was still too damn hard to wrap his head around what happened that day. He let out a soft sigh when he heard Tobi’s last words. “You’re making this ten times harder than it already is.” He said, lifting his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose as he felt himself run out of lies and things to say to soothe Tobi because he had always been a terrible liar.
River considered escaping back to his room right then and there, taking this as a sign that they had just finished their conversation but his feet weren’t moving and he soon found himself glued right in his spot with nowhere to go. “Alright, fine, what do you want me to say, Tobi?” River asked, sounding exasperated. “That I’m upset that you slept with that guy who looks like a hot version of the hulk?” He asked. “What right do I have to even be upset about something like that?” He soon realized he didn’t give an actual answer as to whether he was upset about that or not and he realized that alone was an answer in itself. “That I regret what we did that day? Because I—” River paused, his lips hanging open for a moment before he closed them. “I don’t.” His voice was much softer as he admitted that. “Did it scare me? Yes. Yes, it did. But not because it didn’t feel good.” River paused, looking down at the mug in his hand, using it as an excuse not to look at Tobi just yet. “It’s because it did feel good, Tobi. I never felt anything like that before. It scares me. It scares me how I can’t stop thinking about it. How much I want it to happen again. It’s screwing with my head, okay?”

Tobi didn’t want to seem like some arrogant asshole suggesting River was bothered by Kace staying the night, but it was the only plausible explanation. His own emotions were a swirling storm beneath his calm exterior. “I don’t know.” He said with a shrug as River looked away from him. This was just another reason he avoided any level of commitment. Emotions. Intense overwhelming emotions. Those emotions started to bubble over though. He desperately tried to keep a lid on things, but with each word River said it was harder and harder. River was standing there and lying Tobi. He had the audacity to suggest Tobi was imaging the whole thing and everything was perfectly fine between them. “Okay well sorry I’m the only one mature enough to have this damn conversation.” Suddenly the light bulb from over in the living room shattered. Lying had never been River’s strong suit. He easily came undone at the seams, stumbling over words and panicking. “I’ll replace that.” He muttered, gesturing towards the living room area. As expected River started to come undone, accepting he was upset about Kace, which only made Tobi felt a million times worse. “You’re allowed to be upset by it.” I’m sorry River— but the apology was stuck in his throat. He sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration, tugging on his curls. They were entering dangerous territory. They’d already crossed that line once when they were drunk, but could they cross it again? It was screwing with Tobi’s head too. “But what scares me more is losing you. We risk fuckin’ up our friendship… like fuckin’ it up beyond repair sorta thing.” And he’d never forgive himself for ruining a friendship for the sake of one night of passion with River, no matter how much he was craving it. ━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ River nearly jumped out of his skin when the bulb shattered. He looked over at the living room and then back at Tobi with wide eyes before he slowly nodded his head because he really wasn't torn about it. It just surprised him to see that happen. "Don't, uh, don't worry about it." River waved his hand off and it had him wondering just how much this was actually affecting Tobi.
"I'm not. I'm not upset." River waved it off because he wasn't. Was he? Was that ugly feeling in his stomach him actually being upset over Tobi sleeping with another man? It... surprisingly made a lot of sense. "I'm not." He repeated, but this time, it was said in a way that made it seem like he was trying to convince himself of his own lie which made him seem pretty pathetic, or at least in his eyes he did seem that way.
River's expression softened at Tobi's next words. "I know, Tobi. I know. I... I'm not saying we should do it again. In fact, I think we shouldn't do any of that again. We're good friends, right? We'll stay that way. I won't let this change anything between us, okay? So, let's just put it behind us and move on." River offered with a smile resting on his lips and he honestly didn't believe half of the crap coming out of his mouth. "I don't want to lose you either, Tobi." River added in a soft voice, his eyes fixed on Tobi as he said that and it was probably one of the truths he'd spilled tonight because all the other crap were just lies after lies. What would the Lord say over all those lies?
"Don't worry about a thing, okay? We're cool. I promise. We're cool, right?" River asked, holding his closed fist out in an encouragement for Tobi to fist-bump him, eager to put all of this behind them so he wouldn't have to ever think about Tobi's lips, or how it felt to kiss him ever again.

Damn, when was the last time he lost control of his magic like that? He could stand pretending whatever the fuck was going on with River but the smash lightblub was telling a different story. The tiny shreds of glass scattered across the floor was a solid indication that Tobi did care. It was hurting him that River was ignoring him. “Sorry. Sometimes my magic is controlled by my emotions.” The repetition wasn’t exactly helping River’s argument either. The way he was trying to convince both of them that everything was fine. While it was both of them involved in the kiss Tobi couldn’t help but feel the heavy weight of fault on his shoulder. He was the one who suggested it in the end. Stupid drunk Tobi, never thinking, just acting. Then came the blow. River didn’t want things to progress any further. They were just friends and things were to stay that way between them. It was the path he was suggesting they took, but now he was fighting against it. He did want to kiss River again. A thousand times over, but he couldn’t say that outloud. “Yeah, sure. Just friends… good friends.” He returned River’s smile, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. Tobi glanced down at River’s fist, bringing his own up to meet River’s in the middle. “Okay. We’re cool. If this is what you want.” He needed to hear River say those words before he could fully walk away from the situation. RIVER MAY

━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ River shook his head when he apologized because he knew it wasn't his fault. "It's, uh, it's okay. Just caught me off guard, s'all." He had pushed Tobi too far and it gnawed at his insides to know that he had done something like that to him. It wasn't like Tobi had stolen his first kiss. He had leaned in, too. He participated in it just the same. Heck, he even asked for a second one because of how much he'd liked it. But now, he was standing at the cusp of losing his best friend and if the choice was between pursuing his feelings for Tobi or keeping their friendship relatively unharmed, then it was obvious just which choice he was going to go for.
It wasn't like he'd be able to embrace that side of him with ease and he'd hate to have Tobi suffer with him because of it. He didn't deserve that. He didn't deserve to have someone like River who wouldn't be able to hold his hand in public, or treat him like how he deserved to be treated.
Asking for them to stay as friends was probably the hardest thing he'd ever uttered to someone. "Good friends." He repeated, noticing that something was off about Tobi's smile and it didn't make it any easier for him to go down this path of having them stay as just friends because it was obvious that it wasn't what Tobi wanted either.
He didn't want to be Tobi's friend. Or, just his friend. He wanted to kiss him, to hold his hand, to say all sorts of things that hang on the tip of his tongue only to never be spilled out because it wasn't the sort of thing that should see the light of day.
River smiled a little when Tobi met his fist bump and then his words came shortly after and it was so unfair. So unfair how the ball was in his court now and it was up to him now. He hated this plan. He hated pretending like nothing had happened when he'd been so eager to kiss Tobi back then. Heck, he was still eager now. But, now without the alcohol pumping through his veins, it was hard for him not to see the consequences of his actions if he were to give in. But, still... "Cool, cool, cool. I should probably uhm.." He pointed over his shoulder at the door. "Try to get some sleep." He soon realized that he wasn't repeating his earlier words and now it was too late to do anything about it and honestly, if you ask him, he doesn't want to say it again. "Or, y'know, finish this coffee and stay up for a few days." He said with an awkward chuckle following shortly after. He then realized that he really does need to shut the heck up and just go. Go before he's forced to face the reality of it all. Forced to realize just how much he needed Tobi.

It caught Tobi off guard too. That sudden surge of frustration inside of spilling out in the form of magic like he was some overemotional teenager again. River had managed to tap into something inside of Tobi that no one had managed to do before. Plenty of men and women had stood before Tobi, but none of them made their way into his heart. Most of them barely scratched the surface, but River shot through him like an arrow. Now Tobi was left trying to repair the damage. Stitch himself back together again. Tobi watched River struggle with his words, each sentence like a jagged piece of glass cutting deeper into his heart. He wanted to reach out, to bridge the gap that had formed between them in the aftermath of their kiss, but he was caught in his own web of confusion and fear. The easiest thing to do was to forget it ever happened. Pretending like it was massive big fucking mistake— although Tobi never thought it was. They could move past this, Tobi was certain they could. He wasn’t about to lose someone he cared so deeply about. River was about the one of the only people in Mystic Falls Tobi trusted. There were times when it felt like he trusted River more than his own family. When he returned to town River was one of the people who welcomed him with open arms, over the mood that Tobi was back. He let out a low chuckle at River’s comment, “Go get some sleep.” In a few hours they could both wake up and start fresh. Tobi and River. Just two best friends. Nothing more. RIVER MAY - the end!
