━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ EVERY TIME THAT DESTINY HAPPENED TO SEE THE RING on her finger, a smile spread on her face. She’d reach for something or glance at her keyboard while typing up something for work and remember that she was engaged to Grey. It didn’t matter that Mikayla━the stupid bitch at the Christmas party━had ruined their chances to announce it themselves by declaring it to the entire party. Later, she’d had to swear to Lottie that she had no idea it was going to happen that night━that this wasn’t a ‘secret engagement party’ as Mikayla claimed.
It was crazy that she’d found a close friend in Catia’s sister━she’d figured Cat would be the one she’d be sharing all this with━but Catia was busy handling Grey’s admin work, and she didn’t always have the time to gush. Both Des and Lottie had their own jobs, but they still made time for each other, which she really loved. They’d become fast friends, and it was nice to know she had someone she could turn to when she needed a girl to chat with.
Especially when it came to wedding planning.
Grey was involved, obviously, and Destiny knew he cared, but he didn’t have a ton of opinions. There were a lot of, “I think either would look nice” and “Whichever you like best”’s, which was sweet, but not helpful. Destiny had gotten to the point where she’d puff, “No, pick one!” at him until he conceded. Most times, she’d be happy with either━she just couldn’t make a decision!
Plus, he didn’t have the eye for this stuff, ‘cause he was a guy. It was that simple. Lottie, however, was a girl, and definitely had opinions.
And it was bad luck for Grey to see her dress, so her only option for a shopping partner today was Lottie. Who, obviously, was the best option. They’d planned it on one of Lottie’s days off, and Destiny left work at lunch to meet Lottie at the small wedding dress store in the town square.
“Hey!” Destiny practically squealed as she rushed from her car to the shop’s front door, holding drinks and a bag full of stuff from the café. Lottie was anti-coffee like her, so she handed Lottie one of the sugary drinks in her hand and lifted the bag. “I dunno if they’ll let us eat, but I figured ‘cause I’m dragging you out around lunch time, I should provide food.” She laughed, “There’s two small sandwiches and croissants and some treats.” Destiny continued as she held open the door for Lottie, her voice getting a little quieter as she entered, “But, like, how much money am I paying for a dress here? They should let us snack.” She snorted quietly, then gave the approaching woman a polite smile.
Destiny gave her name and her appointment time, then watched as the old lady checked something behind her little podium before leading them to a back room.
Jeez, she felt like she was on one of those reality TV shows. There were long couches (probably to accommodate brides who had bigger entourages than she did), little end tables (where she set down her drink and the bag), and a wide, circular stage in the middle━probably where she was supposed to model the dresses.
“We pulled our collection of dresses in your size.” The old lady informed her, then motioned to them.
They had a rack of dresses at the back of the room, and she grinned at all the lace and poofy skirts, glancing back at Lottie. “Which one should I start with?” She’d been leaning towards a destination wedding━seriously, they only had, like, four people they wanted there, anyways━so she’d probably have to keep that in mind, too. Somewhere cold. She’d sent Lottie about a hundred Pinterest pins in the last week of those pretty Antarctica weddings, so maybe she needed sleeves.

Okay, Lottie needed to remind calm rather than losing her fucking mind over the fact Des was getting married. Ahhhhhh. Lottie had been pretty much vibrating with excitement from the moment she found out Grey had proposed to Des. She’d always loved weddings, even though her own marriage had crumbled. She refused to become one of those depressing women who looked down on other people's marriages because hers had failed. She was capable of appreciating other people’s relationships. Plus, what wasn’t there to love about a wedding? It was an excuse to buy a new dress as well. The excitement nearly bubbled over when Destiny asked Lottie to help her choose her dress. Immediately she started crying with joy. She’d relocated her entire life to Mystic Falls to be closer to Catia and Lucky (rookie error) but ended up gravitating towards Destiny and finding the type of friend she’d always wanted. In her hometown the only friends she had were Freddie’s friends' wives, but they weren’t really her friends. When she found out about Freddie she didn’t reach for her phone and message any of these women. There was a chance they knew all along and kept Lottie in the dark. Another thing that Lottie absolutely loved about Destiny was that she matched her energy. She was just as bubbly and fun-loving as Lottie, which was a massive difference compared to all her sisters. She was the golden retriever to an otherwise black cat family. Her face lit up when Destiny handed her a drink. She took a massive sip of the drink. The amount of sugar in the drink was already rotting her teeth. “Yay! You’re the best.” Probably for the best Des brought food otherwise Lottie would have forgotten to eat. She followed Destiny into the store, clinging onto her drink, terrified of dropping it. “They should be offering us a free prosecco.” She’d seen on TV women sipping on prosecco while trying dresses on. Lottie slowly lowered herself down onto the long couch, her eyes practically bouncing around the room taking in her surroundings. The place was a damn lot nicer than the place she bought her wedding dress from. “Um…” She jumped up from the couch, placing her drink down on the side. Her eyes scanned the dresses, not actually reaching for them because she was too scared to touch them. They all looked soooo pretty. She knew Destiny was looking for some kind of holiday wedding, like in that place at the north of the earth. Antar… something. “I think you should start at the far left and make your way down. You gotta try them all on!” Lottie was hoping they would opt for a warmer country though. She was scared of getting icebite or whatever it was. DESTINY BACCARI

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ DES GAVE AN EXAGGERATED NOD AT LOTTIE’S comment. Yes, prosecco. She didn’t know how it’d go with their frapps, croissants and other snacks, but they could always get some glasses as a follow-up. Almost like a dessert! ‘Cause this would probably take forever.
As they moved into the back room, Destiny’s eyes blew up at the sheer number of dresses on the rack. She was awful at making decisions, so she really hoped most of them were ugly.
Okay, yeah. Start from one side. That was a good plan.
Destiny walked to the left side of the rack after putting down her drink, then wiped her hands on her clothes, peering nervously at the white tufts of organza, like it was gonna jump out and bite her. She pulled the first one from the rack and looked at it with a frown, then glanced at Lottie. “I’m realizing that the Frapps were probably a bad idea. I’m probably super bloated, oh my God,” She started stressing, then turned to one of the women, who whisked her away to a changing room before she could voice any of her concerns. She didn’t know why she had to leave━it was a private room and they weren’t on a flipping wedding show━but she went along with it.
Destiny walked out a few minutes later in the poofiest dress imaginable. Not only could she feel the fabric scratching at her upper arms, but even holding the skirt of it made her nervous system feel like it was on fire. “This dress makes me feel autistic,” She scoffed, then awkwardly stepped onto the circular stage, trying to gauge Lottie’s reaction. When she saw herself in the mirror, Destiny barked out a laugh.
“Oh my God,” She snorted, “I look like a weird 80’s princess. This is awful.” She laughed again, lifting a hand to ruffle the poofy sleeve. “Like, kinda like Ariel’s dress at the end of the Little Mermaid, but so not cute.” Destiny looked at Lottie to make sure she agreed━only a crazy person would like this thing, right?━then stepped off the podium without falling (somehow). She wobbled a bit, but one of the workers was there with an arm to make sure she didn’t break an ankle.
The next one was fine, Destiny supposed. After getting out of the poofy one, she walked back into the main room in only her bra and underwear, then motioned at Lottie. “I don’t think she cares,” She’d said to the worker, “And I don’t care, and I don’t think the reveal is anything too crazy. I mean, I’m not marrying her, so,” Destiny laughed, then slipped into the next dress.
And, yeah, maybe it felt like another point in their friendship was reached, and she was so happy to have Lottie in her life. She hoped Lottie realized that.
Anyway, the second one was mermaid-style (topical), but Destiny could barely move in it, and, honestly it looked awful. “I feel like I’ve never been more fat,” She scoffed, patting a hand onto her stomach while she stood before the mirror. It hurt━a little bit━when she thought of how fat she’d been while carrying Petyr, and how she’d probably never get that big again. But she wouldn’t let those bad feelings ruin what was supposed to be a fun day.
“It’s ugly, right?” She asked Lottie. There weren’t enough ruffles to cover her stomach, and it cinched in too small at the knees━and, honestly, she just felt weird in it. “The ‘right one’ is supposed to be a feeling, isn’t it? Or is that just fake Movie Stuff?” She really hoped it wasn’t.

Hopefully if they were about to dish out prosecco they would only give Lottie a few glasses because anything past three glasses was too much. Des knew by now Lottie’s tolerance was awful and would hopefully pry the glass from her friend's hand before it got a little too chaotic in the very expensive bridal shop. Lottie’s eyes were fixed on the dresses as they were wheeled out. A quiet gasp left her lips. They all looked amazing. How the hell were they expected to choose the perfect dress for Destiny? She pulled her gaze towards Destiny, shaking her head as she did so. “Don’t be silly. You look amazing!” And that was before she’d stepped into any of the dresses. Suddenly she was taken out towards the changing room leaving Lottie sipping on her frappuccino. There was probably a million grams of sugar on it, but Lottie always needed more. Then Des walked out to showcase her first dress. It looked… okay. A frown formed on her face as she shook her head, disagreeing with Des, “I don’t think you look like a painter.” How could a dress make someone look artistic? She broke into a smile when Destiny let out a laugh. This time she nodded along, agreeing with Destiny, “Maybe try the next one?”Again she waited for Destiny to reappear in another dress, but she emerged in just her bra and underwear. “Grey would like that.” She said, letting out a laugh. Lottie hated the second dress even more. It looked uncomfortable. “No, no. None of that! You look amazing and I would kill for your body.” Nothing but the truth rolled off her tongue and she hated Destiny felt that way about herself. But she could sympathise. When Freddie’s secret life was revealed Lottie felt like the ugliest woman in the world. “I don’t like it.” She admitted. Destiny wasn’t the problem though, it was the dress. “I knew when I found the right dress and you will too. I tried on so many dresses before I decided.” She finished her frapp, placing the cup carefully on the side, “Do you have any inspo pictures you could show the lady?”DESTINY BACCARI

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ LOTTIE WAS THE BEST. A LITTLE AIRHEADED SOMETIMES, but in a really innocent way. A way that made Destiny trust her completely. Despite her past━and everything that’d happened in Mystic Falls━she never lost that. That part of her that trusted too quickly.
Lottie was worthy of it, at least.
Her brows raised when Lottie misunderstood her joke, but Destiny didn’t bother correcting her. She didn’t wanna make Lottie feel stupid, and it wasn’t that funny anyway.
Snickering at Lottie’s joke, she finally squeezed herself into the next dress, and immediately felt like a cocktail sausage. At least she had her best friend here to talk her off the ledge. Destiny turned a sad━but appreciative━smile to Lottie. “Thanks,” She sighed, sounding like she didn’t believe it.
But she did believe that she’d feel the “right” dress, fairytale or not. She was just happy that Lottie confirmed it. Finally, Destiny gave her a real smile.
“I think so,” She chimed, then rushed back to where she’d left her phone. After showing the woman her relevant Pinterest board, the rack was thinned to just three dresses, then more were added.
Destiny went through a few of them━showing Lottie each, always claiming ‘I feel like we’re almost there!’━before she finally found it. The right dress.
It was white, of course, with a layer of lace over the whole thing, the bust appearing at though it were made of flowers. A-line━still puffing out from the waist━but not as dramatically as the first one. The sweetheart neckline drooped just low enough, and the lace stretched above the cups, blossoming from her sternum, a line of white lace leaves travelling up to her shoulders. The sleeves were lace, too, of course, covering Destiny in leaves and flowers all down her arms. When she looked in the mirror, she could easily imagine her hair braided down her back, white flowers and beads sewn into it━maybe a crown of them on the top of her head.
Immediately, Destiny’s eyes filled with tears, and she managed to peel her gaze from the mirror to look at Lottie, a broad smile splitting her face in two. “it’s this one.” She said softly, “This one. It’s so beautiful.” And it reminded her of nature━where her powers had stemmed━the ones that had connected her to her future husband.
