He wasn’t in his right mind. Elijah let out a brief huff of laughter. If there was ever a time when things truly became clear for a man, it was when he was staring death in the face.
Stepping out of his car, he shucked off his jacket and reached back inside to hang it from the grab handle in the back. Elijah slid the axe from the passenger seat, bouncing it lightly in his hand. Perhaps Hector had been right and there was nothing going on with him that needed to be fixed. Like every other virus, whatever Tristan had inflicted on them was harmless. A temporary fix to the restraint they had to constantly show to avoid getting something like the axe buried in their chests. Good little vampires didn’t tear make a scene in public. They squelched every urge in their body and cowered away from those who would see them dead for merely giving in to their true nature.
In some dark corner of this town Tristan was likely rubbing his hands together in glee. An Original had been infected with his insidious little creation. Finally he would fall far enough to be earn the title of monster that his siblings had been carrying for centuries. If only it had struck Tristan before that he had always been just like them. In a prettier package perhaps, etiquette and killer fashion sense hiding it within glossy wrapping perhaps, but just as ready to get his hands dirty. Yesterday he had been just a mile from here, burying the head of the axe in the door of the mansion he had been told belonged to Tristan. He had stepped back out when the place had proved empty, brushing splinters and tiny shards of glass from his hands. Of course Tristan hadn’t been in a place like that. He knew that was where they would look first. Why live risk living in sprawling luxury when you can perch at the top of some ivory tower?
Elijah tilted his head back and looked up at the building in front of him. Perhaps Aurora didn’t have her brother’s taste for the ostentatious – a cheap imitation of his own style – but didn’t seem to have spared much expense with her choice of accommodation either. This was the same building where Hector lived. Apparently they’d replaced the staff as a concierge shot up from behind his desk as he walked in. Brave until the axe appeared and then her was scurrying away, babbling Aurora’s apartment number at him. He was lucky that he had a different target in mind. All the same his fingers tightened on the handle of the axe as he headed for the elevator, his knuckles white as he tried to avoid the tremor that wanted to set in with the need to bury the weapon in the man’s face all the same. He needed to save the violence for those who deserved it – the de Martels.
The doors of the elevator pinged open as he reached her floor. A polite announcement for what was sure to be an unwelcome visit. Elijah strolled the length of the hall, the axe swinging lightly at his sword. He tilted his head at the sight of the camera doorbell beside the door. His lips curled into a smirk as he swung the axe up into view. ”It’s about time we spoke, don’t you think?” he said lightly. It would have been easy to shatter the door with the axe, but a lack of self-control didn’t mean he’d lost all style. The tip was wedged in between the lock and the frame, then wrenched free. Minimal damage, no less impact.
”You can lay the blame and the bill for this at your brother’s feet,” Elijah called to Aurora as he stepped inside. The door was pushed shut with the head of the axe, but would no longer latch in the torn frame. ”He was the fool who decided to unleash a plague on this town after all.” His lips curled into a sour little smile as Aurora appeared. ”I’m surprised he allowed you to stay. What could be worse than Aurora de Martel rendered entirely unhinged?” The fact that Tristan would not dare to bring true harm to his sister didn’t register, only the certainty that Tristan’s was the hand that had concocted all of this.

The thought of taking down Damien’s new boss had Aurora feeling a little giddy. It wasn’t going to be simple but she was convinced they could kick Elias off his throne. Once he was dead Damien could take the crown and rule over earth as Death with Aurora by his side. Together they’d be unstoppable. She had to remind herself not to let the excitement take control of her though. This plan would need to be carefully put together, not the type you plot overnight. Usually she stormed into things head out, but Damien was there to hold her back. One bad move from them and Elias could kill Damien. Aurora wasn’t technically trapped in her apartment, even though being confined to a small space wasn’t uncommon for her, but everytime she stepped out of her apartment she ran the risk of either getting infected or getting kidnapped. Her, Tristan and Lucien spent a hundred years looking over their shoulder for Mikael, so by now Aurora was an expert at double checking her surroundings. It wasn’t as easy with the virus though. These people looked normal for a while before they started foaming at the mouth, so she was giving almost everyone a wide berth, especially the club. By now news of the virus had travelled back to Tristan before she could figure out a way to tell him without him grabbing her wrist and zipping them out of town. Instead she leaned into his hatred of the Mikaelson, telling him they were to leave Mystic Falls then it could be another decade before they find the entire family together. They needed to stay in Mystic Falls to follow through on their plan to kill or subdue the Mikaelsons, even though by now her intentions had changed. If a situation presented itself where they could take down one of the family members, she would of course assist. That kind of hatred didn’t disappear quickly. But all her time and effort was now being poured into her relationship because after so long she had finally found someone who was perfect for her. It was questionable how humans claimed to have found their soulmates in such a small space of time, but for Aurora it took over a thousand years. The ring from the elevator dragged her attention away from the book she was reading. Probably an unexpected visit from her brother or maybe even Enzo. Thanks to the brilliant world of technology though she could check the camera to see who it was, preparing herself if it was her brother. But she didn’t expect to see Elijah standing there looking a little dishevelled. Stressed almost. He’d decided to bring an axe with him too. Aurora peeled herself away from the dining room table. She might as well open the door because Elijah was coming inside regardless, but he’d beat her to it. She stepped into the hallway with a slight smile on her face. It wasn’t like the axe could kill her, only the handle if he were to turn it around to use it as a stake. Carefully she studied Elijah’s face, suppressing the urge to grin. Had the virus wormed its way into his mind too? “Is everything okay Elijah? You do not seem yourself.” It was certainly out of character for him to come over armed with an axe. That was Klaus’ job. “Are you suggesting my brother is the one behind this virus? If he were, why are we both still in town? Like you said, he would not leave me here.” So far there had been no traces back to the orgin of this virus, but she was certain her brother wasn't behind it. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Years of being merciful, of stopping the slaughter his brothers and sister would have wrought on humanity. Years of being shackled by Esther’s words. The noble brother, the one you wanted to see when you’d crossed the Mikaelsons’ path. The diplomat. The weakling. Staring into Tatia’s eyes, Elijah had seen everything that he could have saved his family from, if only he’d been able to overcome his mother’s teachings.
Like a key whispering into a lock, those teachings were gone. It hadn’t occurred to him that the promises he’d made to Tatia had too. He hadn’t hurt her, although he’d seen fear flicker through her expression. That didn’t mean he had any intention on merciful to the others though. Every word out of her mouth had left Elijah more certain that it was no coincidence he had ended up infected with this virus – although the observations that he was sick were bordering on lies. There was an intelligence towards this plague, someone who knew that for once the Original family wouldn’t be immune to its effects. They had been foolish to try, though. What was more dangerous than a Mikaelson who had been temporarily cut free of all restraint?
The axe had done little damage to what was supposed to be Tristan’s retreat yesterday. Light in the hallway spilled onto the blade that he held up, highlighting the nicks on it for Aurora to see via that camera before he swung it again. Elijah felt the impact roll up his arms, his lips curving into a smile at the sensation. Would it feel the same as the blade bit into Aurora’s throat? It should have happened a thousand years before, a problem crushed out before it had the chance to grow. Now Tristan would have to suffer the consequences of centuries of machinations. Delivering his sister’s head to him would just be the start of things, the first volley fired in the final battle of a war that had gone on too long.
She stood in front of him as the door swung mostly shut behind him. Elijah let the head of the axe smack down against the floor as he settled in place. His head tilted slightly, his smile growing as he studied her with a predator’s cold stare. ”You mean I am no longer who you expect me to be,” Elijah said coolly. ”It should not come as a surprise, but I am not as different to my siblings as my reputation would make me out to be.” When the de Martels were finally dead and this virus dried up along with their corpses everything would be okay again.
”Are you going to try and convince me that he couldn’t possibly be?” Elijah drawled lightly. He took a slow couple of steps forward, the blade of the axe dragging heavily over the floor, as though he was drawing a line straight to the heart of this problem. Humming lightly, Elijah shook his head at her. Tristan may have been a fool in many ways, but he would have not have produced something like this without some sort of a cure. An inoculation against the very chaos he had created here in town. ”He would not have left either one of you unprotected. I bet he’s hiding somewhere here in this town. Cowering behind steel and glass until his plan finally comes to fruition. Has he told you to remain here? A prisoner in a cell once again. Poor Aurora, always trapped. If you tell me where he is, I’ll finally free you from your prison.” Elijah swung the axe up again, a graceful move that left the blade scything the air a foot from Aurora. A warning she likely would not to acknowledge. If there was one person in this town who would not openly show signs of this virus if she got it, it was Aurora. A woman already without empathy or mercy. A lunatic.

If Elijah Mikaleson presented himself at the door with an axe most would have been trembling with fear, apologising even if they had no idea what they’d apparently done wrong. It was the same level of fear she watched her brother invoke in people too, except it was probably a fraction easier to negotiate with Elijah compared to Tristan. But it was apparent Elijah was past negotiations. Her attention ticked down towards the axe for a brief second, keeping the weapon in sight, ready to duck if he tried to take a swing at her. It was a shame her dress was about to get ruined, considering she’d spent twenty minutes deciding what to put on for her dinner date with Damien later. He promised to whisk her away somewhere fancy, somewhere away from Mystic Falls of course. Hopefully no blood was shed as she didn't have a backup option. “I have never thought anything differently. You and your siblings are just as wicked as one another.” Aurora had never bought into the idea Elijah was anything different, despite his fancy suits. Aurora had been curious as to where this virus had stemmed from. She’d also toyed with the idea someone had brought it to town to try and eradicate her kind. Over a thousand years and neither her or Tristan had encountered such a thing. “I would not waste my time trying to convince you any different as it is clear you are of the opinion Tristan is behind this.” Her words meant nothing to Elijah. Aurora stood still, refusing to take a step back as Elijah walked forward. Sometimes it was easy to plan ideas in Aurora’s head. If someone did enough convincing she could warm to it. Had Tristan released the virus and not told her about it? It seemed ludicrous but not impossible. He was forever keeping her in the dark about things. He didn’t tell her he was coming to Mystic Falls until the very last minute, even then he told her via a letter. He didn’t want her showing up and ruining his plans with her destructive behaviour. Perhaps this was the same? “I am no prisoner here, Elijah. I am free.” She bit back. She could call Damien in that moment and they could be halfway across the world in the next second. Tristan would of course follow, but it would be a long time before he tracked either of them down. As he swung the axe up it glimmered in the corner of her eye, but she kept her gaze locked on Elijah, “Tell you where what is?” She was already balancing slightly on the balls of her feet, ready to jump away when Elijah inevitably swung the axe towards her. Before Mikael had again driven him from the life he had been building, the Strix had been a thing of promise. The brightest minds, the most creative thinkers. Men and women who would change the world for the better. Under his tutelage it had been working, there had been a chance for them to make the difference he had always believed they were capable of. Then, like a tsunami Mikael had rushed in. An immortal warrior as set on destruction as he had been even when he was human. Reduce what he despised to ashes in the name of tearing monstrosity from this world, only Mikael had been a monster long before his children had been turned into them by his wife. With no guiding hand to steer them along the right path, the Strix had fallen prey to another monster – Tristan de Martel. If only he had torn the heart from his chest instead of sending Tristan, Aurora and Lucien out as a smoke screen between them and Mikael. It had been too merciful, one small nod to his brother’s love for the woman who stood before him now. Without this virus clouding his mind he would’ve wondered how heartbroken Niklaus would be if he finally put an end to one of the curses lingering over them.
Elijah’s smile shifted into a light chuckle, his head ticking back and forth. His eyes were granite cold and hard as they fixed on her. ”That is where you’re wrong. One of us at least is better than the rest. His death started the downfall of my family – just as your death will start the downfall of yours.” Just as he had always been caught in the inescapable orbit of his family, Aurora and Tristan were forever tied together. Tristan might survive his sister’s death, but it would destroy something in him just as surely as the axe could.
”But you do believe I’m wrong.” Elijah tilted his head, almost as though he was considering her word as he moved towards Aurora. He had believed for a time that Hector might have been behind his infection too, before he had found the man already ravaged by it. If Hector had been used to pass the virus to him at all, then it had bene unwillingly. Perhaps Tristan would not have been able to guarantee his death – only one thing had ever proved deadly to an Original – but if he eroded his control far enough then it would be a coffin for him, for his own good. Lifting the axe, he thumped it down head first against the boards, not biting through them, but thumping heavily enough that he felt the vibration through the floor. ”If your brother truly had no hand in it, then let him tell me so himself.” If he would come scurrying out from beneath his rock for long enough.
The bitter laugh was gone, but Elijah’s smirk was still in place. A sharp expression that did not suit the lines of his face, uncharacteristic, far more like the one worn so often by Kol or Niklaus. His dark brows rose, his gaze sweeping around the apartment. ”And yet you are here in this town. Do you want me to believe that it’s merely because you cherish your brother’s company?” As he often tired of his siblings’ behaviour, Tristan seemed to tire of his sister’s instability. Still, if he believed she were in danger from this virus, from him, Tristan might finally make a mistake. It was about time.
Irritation hummed in Elijah’s veins, cutting him through to the quick as Aurora played dumb. She might have raved like a fool at times, but Aurora was sharp as the axe in his hands. Swinging it again, Eiljah brought it up beneath her chin, close enough to slit her throat with a twist of his wrist. ”Him,” he hissed. ”Your brother. The rat who has never been able to stand in second place to my family. Tell me where he is and you might yet walk free of this town.” The emphasis was on the might. He had little confidence that Aurora would reveal her brother’s location and risk spending an eternity alone.

It hadn’t even occurred to her how the virus may affect the Mikaelsons. Thoughts of the family only entered her mind on occasion now, whereas before her hatred of them clouded every single thought. She was completely fixated on destroying Elijah. It was her main and only goal, but then Damien walked into her life, changing everything. Suddenly her life had meaning. He was the reason she woke up every morning feeling happy, the reason her mind was clear, the reason she remained grounded. Aurora and Tristan’s downfall started centuries ago, from the moment Mikaelsons entered their life. “The downfall of my family started when you and your siblings took sanctuary in my father’s home. If you kill me today Nik will never forgive you and my brother will come for you.” But there was something in the way Elijah spoke which indicated he didn’t care about the consequences of killing Aurora. The closer he got to her the more likely it was she would contract this bizarre virus, but stepping away from him was an indication of fear. Aurora didn’t fear Elijah or any of his family. “I know you are wrong.” Her eyes ticked off towards the axe for a moment, just as Elijah knocked the head of it against the floorboards. Her attention quickly diverted back to him. There was no point trying to grab the axe from him. He moved faster than Aurora, even with the virus pumping through his body. Her second option was to somehow make contact with Damien, but her phone was in the bedroom. “As you can see he is not here. Perhaps I can get my phone and call him. You can speak to him yourself.” Then she could send a warning message to Damien. Elijah was wearing a concerning expression, similar to one worn by Tristan when he was about to unleash some kind of unhinged violence. It was dark and unnerving. The virus had truly embedded itself into Elijah’s mind. “The town is charming and the people are pleasant. There is no reason for me to move on.” She was happy in Mystic Falls, with Damien by her side. He was the only reason she hadn’t left yet. Suddenly the axe was at her neck and the blade was dangerously close to her skin. She didn’t flinch though. “I have no idea where my brother is. He is not in Mystic Falls though. He left a few weeks ago, but did not share with me where he was going.” It was the truth. He said he had some business to take care of somewhere north of Mystic Falls. Old Aurora would have pressed Tristan for more information, but she welcomed his departure, knowing it meant her and Damien could spend more time together. “Does your family know you are sick? I am surprised Nik has not driven a dagger through your heart by now.” She knew the answer was no because Elijah would have been in a wooden box if Klaus knew. ELIJAH MIKAELSON - end with yours?

It would always come back to his siblings. What was best for them, regardless of how that affected him. Finn might have been the eldest, but he had never been willing to sacrifice what he wanted for his brothers and sister, it was why he’d ended up in a coffin. They had tired of him and now, finally, Elijah was growing truly tired of his siblings. What they had done had started a thousand year long fall for the de Martels. If Niklaus had just listened to him in the first place. Typically his brother had fallen in love and cut them all with the shattered remnants of his heart when it had all gone wrong.
Elijah felt as though he could close his hand into a fist and feel them now. Drawing his blood as one of the woman who’d gotten away stood before him, throwing Niklaus’ name in his face as a threat. ”Let them come,” he said lightly. ”Niklaus has been disappointed in me for most of our lives, already, and as for your brother … that is exactly what I want.” There was a cold edge to his own threat. He would put an end to both de Martels for good. Lucien would fade into utter insignificance without the two of them there for him to cling on to.
A swing of the axe and like a domino, Aurora would fall, carrying others down with her. The first to fall, the first who should have done all those centuries ago. If only Mikaelson blood hadn’t been flowing in her veins that day. As confident as she was then, Aurora tried to play him again now. Elijah huffed out a breath, shaking his head at her. She could believe he was in the wrong all he liked, it would change nothing. The crack of the axe head against the floor had her gaze snapping back to him. ”This is not a conversation to be had over the phone,” Elijah said, shaking his head. Especially not when that phone call would give Tristan enough warning to attempt to bring an army down upon him. Not being able to die didn’t mean he couldn’t suffer.
”The same could be said for a thousand other spots on this earth, but you chose this one. It is our place, you will not defile it.” His fingers shook on the handle of the axe as he looked back at Aurora. Anger was burning colder and colder in his expression. It would soon shatter, leaving jagged shards of his control behind, sharp enough to cut. The de Martels were only here for one reason, and that was his family. To protect them he would cut every single one of them apart – Aurora, Tristan, every member of the Strix. Anybody who dared to so much look in their direction for too long.
An ounce more pressure and the blade of the axe would’ve cut into the delicate column of Aurora’s neck. Parting skin, biting deep into flesh and cartilage until her head thumped to the floor. ”You think I’ll believe he ran like a coward?” The laughter was back, Elijah’s head falling back slightly. ”No, I don’t think your brother would have left you alone.” Not with what was going on in town now. The virus. That small voice was whispering in the back of his mind, the one that had been growing quieter of late. Sanity, reason. ”Again, the threat of what my brother will do.” Elijah’s mouth twisted. ”You should worry more about what I am willing to do, especially when I’m not myself.” There was a sneer to his words, even as the question cut deep.
His expression flattened, becoming a cold, brittle mask. Elijah drew the blade back a few inches and then he was swinging it towards Aurora. ”It is time for your family to start to fear us again. Starting with your brother. Tell him I’m coming for him.” If she had words to speak when Tristan found his little sister in a pool of her stolen blood. Elijah felt the impact shiver up his arm as he slit Aurora’s throat with the blade. Not wanting to ruin another pair of shoes, he stepped back quickly from the edge of the spreading ruby pool. After it all these centuries, it was time that the de Martels started to pay attention to the warnings. The time for them being the new Mikaelsons was long gone. Dragging the axe after him, Elijah turned and stormed from the apartment.
