It took a few days for Lena to realise something wasn’t right, thanks to the crying boy. At first, Lena looked at the boy with a face of disapproval, wondering where the hell his parents were. If Baxter had been crying non-stop in a train station, Lena would have dragged him outside to give him a lecture about his behavior. But no one dragged the child anywhere. Then she noticed there was no one with him. Everyone was ignoring the crying child, like he didn’t even exist. Eventually Lena peeled herself away from the seat and approached him. He was lost, he couldn’t find his dad. Lena presented the boy to every single man in the train station and no one claimed him as their own. Her eyes flickered towards the departure board. Her train was due to leave in thirty minutes, but she couldn’t just leave the boy on his own. So she took him by his hand and tried to take him outside, to see if his dad was outside, but they couldn't get out. Every single door led them back to the waiting area. She tried to remain calm, for the child’s sake. She knew how fear could rub off from adults onto children. Lena insisted everything was okay and they’d find his dad, in the meantime she’d stick with him. The tale of the Ghostriders was a story that had her mom told her as a child, but they were thought to be a myth. Something to scare the toddlers into eating their broccoli, but her surroundings were matching up to what her mom had told her. They were trapped until they saved them or remembered them. It was something to ease her concerns because she knew damn well Pierre would remember her soon enough. One hundred and twenty seven years of marriage couldn’t be wiped away that easily. As for Julian, he had a dad who had six years of memories with him. She promised him they’d get out of there, they just needed to be patient in the meanwhile she had a child to entertain to pass the time. It had been centuries since she’d had a young one relying on her, but that motherly instinct hadn’t faded. Everytime the Ghostriders came rushing into the station she snatched Julian up, moving them far away from the faceless beings. She held him close until they shot off into the darkness, after throwing another person into the station. They would dust themselves off then take a seat on one of the benches. Not everyone was a mindlessly fool though. Some people had realised they were trapped in the train station, but Lena told Julian it was best they didn’t speak to anyone for now. She needed to take some time to assess if any of them were a threat, but there was one woman who kept looking over towards them. It didn’t take long for Lena to grow annoyed with the stranger, so she took Julian by the hand and headed over to her. “Can I help you? You look at us, a lot… or are you one of them?” She gestured toward the man sitting next to the woman, who was wearing a vacant look on his face. RUBY HERRERA

━ an ache for home; a shelter against storms ━ THE MOMENT CORY LEFT, RUBY REMEMBERED. SHE was left alone here, stuck, with no one knowing where she was except Cory, who she’d practically forced to leave. It should’ve been a dream come true for her, and in some ways, it was, but not when she was stuck here with a ton of other people. Why couldn’t she be trapped in a field somewhere or something?
But just knowing she was trapped anywhere made her anxious. She could’ve jumped up and slammed on the walls, scratched her way out, but she’d burn all her energy and get nowhere. No. She had to think.
Eventually, her thoughts drifted to the people around her━what use they could be to her━who she’d climb over if it came to that. There was a kid and a woman too Asian to be his mom. Alright, maybe he was adopted, but she doubled the zombie horsemen cared enough to keep families together. He could be worth a ton. He was still small enough to be considered innocent, and would likely go without question. Ruby just didn’t want to put up with him while she figured out a way to get out of here. If she could still have him on the outside, though, he might be enough to buy her life back in Mexico. Or, at the very least, get her out of Mystic Falls.
The woman didn’t look particularly friendly, though. Ruby would have to separate them somehow━or just beckon him away with a chocolate bar or some shit. Kids were easy.
Before she could devise a proper plan, the woman approached her. Ruby stiffened and waited, keeping her eyes on the woman the whole time, despite wanting her to change her mind. When she didn’t, Ruby glared daggers, her eyes flicking to the people indicated and back again. “One of who?” She hissed, “An empty void? Nah. Jus’ lookin’ at your kid. He’s cute.” It made her physically nauseous to refer to a child that way, but whatever. Her mouth curled at the edges as she forced a smile that looked like a rude smirk. Like a big cat bearing its teeth. Could she shift in this place? That might come in handy.
Julian pressed close to Lena, still holding onto her hand, and he tried to smile at the stranger, but he still felt like something was wrong. He didn’t wanna be mean, but his tummy was twisting into knots, and he especially didn’t like the smile she gave him.
“You know where we’re at?” She asked, nodding upwards at Lena, physically restraining herself from swearing. People didn’t like that shit in front of kids.

It was concerning that her fate rested in the hands of a man who forgot to take the trash out and often forgot his pin number but she had faith in him. Pierre forgot the little things in life but he’d always remember their anniversary and what Lena’s favourite flowers were. Eventually he’d save her, she just needed to wait it out. She relayed the same message to Julian. In the meantime her heart ached for Pierre. They’d endured years apart when he went to war, but this felt different because there was no end date. A few weeks or even a few years. That part she didn’t relay to Julian, choosing to tell him it wouldn’t be too long until his dad remembered him. She couldn’t even imagine forgetting Baxter, but then again Pierre had forgotten the woman who’d been in his life for centuries. Patience which was wearing thin with the woman staring at her, but Lena knew she couldn’t be too confrontational with the strange because who knows how long they’d be stuck in there for, together. She didn’t want to make an enemy instantly. She tried to take the edge of her voice as she accused the stranger of staring at them. Despite trying not to seem like a complete bitch Lena was wary of the woman. She was just as standoffish which was understandable considering she’d been thrown into a random train station with strangers. “No. The kid, he no mine… his dad is out there.” She gestured towards one of the entrances of the station, knowing nothing actually lay beyond it. Julian wasn’t a fan of the lady either with that awful smile to try to give him Lena remained quiet for a few seconds, mulling over the woman’s question and whether she should tell her the truth. “We’re stuck here.” Julian jumped at answering the question though. “A fake train station. These horse men they take people and erase all memory of you in real world… you go back when someone remember you.” If someone remembered you but she wasn’t going to say that in front of Julian. ━ an ache for home; a shelter against storms ━ HE WASN’T EVEN HERS? WHAT THE FUCK possessed her to take care of him, then? Was she trying to get him first? Ruby immediately assumed this woman was competition, but she had to remind herself that some women just liked children. The idea was nausea-inducing for Ruby, but if this woman had a kid on the outside, then it was even more likely she was just doing it to be… who fucking knows? Maybe she felt bad about something in her life and was using this kid to make up for that internal battle. It wasn’t as if people just did shit out of the goodness of their own hearts.
The little brat answered Ruby’s question first, and she had to hold herself back from snapping, “I wasn’t fucking talking to you.” If Ruby ever did that shit when she was a kid, she’d get smacked in the face almost instantly. Kids these days were too fucking coddled.
“Great.” Ruby muttered aloud. Clearly Cory remembered her, but why the fuck hadn’t she gone back yet? Was it because he was, like, technically dead or something? Did it not count if he remembered her? “And if they don’t? We’re just gonna be stuck here forever, watchin’ the fuckin’ life drain from us or some shit?” She could imagine all of them like little fucking raisins at the end of it all, void of… everything. Like all the zombies in here, but grey and wrinkly.
She grimaced in disgust as Julian began to cry, tucking into the woman like she was his safety net. He’d tried hard to hold it in, but, honestly, he just couldn’t. He was so scared. What if he never got to go home?
But then, Ruby suddenly wondered why the fuck she was taking this bitch’s word for it. Sure, she seemed to be the only one with a brain, and maybe the only one with some answers, but it wasn’t like Ruby to trust someone right away… or at all. “How th’fuck you know all this, huh?” She asked, ignoring the kid’s irritating whimpering, “You friends with the cowboys or some shit?” Ruby said it sarcastically, like she was already catching this woman in a lie.

With some women it was obvious they were mom’s. They had a caring nature towards other children whether it be their own or someone else’s. Lena didn’t exactly emit this kind of trait prior to having Baxter, but as soon as she was handed that little bundle of joy everything changed. This other woman in the train station clearly didn’t have children. She was looking at Julian like he had two heads. Like he wasn’t a little human being. Her lips pressed into a thin line as the woman started to swear in front of Julian. Lena was careful to keep her words clean in front of Baxter, even though he was over hundred years old now. It went both ways though. If he was caught using crass language Lena would clip him around the ear and yell at him in Chinese. She was a little lost for words when it came to the woman’s question though. “No. I’m sure there’s other ways back.” There weren’t, but again she needed to keep Julian’s spirits high. Lena’s arm wrapped around Julian as he started to cry, pulling him close to her. She shot the stranger a cutting glare before kneeling down in front of Julian. “Julian. Go wait over there while I speak to this woman. Please.” Julian sniffed hard, wiping the tears from his face as he nodded. She waited until Julian was far enough away before turning back to the woman. “He just a child ok? He scared and I’m sure you are too… we all are.” Their existence was hinging on other people finding the, “My mom told me about Ghost Riders. She three hundred years old. Me, I am two hundred and seventy five years old. These riders I thought were urban myth, but apparently not.” A story used to scare Lena into eating her vegetables. “Someone outside needs to remember you or you try to hitch a ride with those horses… I wouldn’t try second option.” She offered the woman a warm smile, in an attempt to show her Lena wasn’t the enemy here.
