It didn’t matter how much Kitty might’ve hated Mal, he was her boyfriend━well, kinda━and after everything that happened… gosh, did she just think Krista was better off not knowin’?!
Maybe. And that would make sense, ‘cause Mal was so awful to her at the end, and Kitty didn’t know everything he’d done since then, but… but nothin’! She should’ve been honest with her! Maybe Krista wouldn’t have believed her, but… ugh!
Once she was finally done spendin’ as much time with Mal as she could, Krista stomped off to Phoebe’s apartment━luckily, it wasn’t that far from the motel (so her fury stayed at boiling level all the way there). She was gonna have to see River, too, but she wanted to cross that off her list when she wasn’t so darn angry! … Also when she didn’t have a new bite mark on her chest that was kinda visible whenever her sundress’s neckline shifted.
She’d told Mal during their fight that Kitty would never lie to her. She defended Kitty, swearing up and down that she’d never liked Mal, but Krista never stopped seein’ him. Well, whatever; maybe Kitty just got her wish and that was a good enough excuse to start lyin’ to her best friend.
And, thankfully, Kitty hadn’t been at the Grill last night when Krista was out with some girls from school and Mal came to get her. Kitty woulda never let her go, and then she’d never get to remember Mal. The idea of that stung worse than recalling their fight. The one where she’d told Mal she loved him, and he just…
No. This was about Kitty.
Krista buzzed up to Phoebe’s apartment, then stormed in. She didn’t care whether Phoebe was home or not━maybe she’d like to know that Kitty was a big fricken liar, too.
She found Kitty quickly, a big frown pulling on all her delicate, ivory features. “You lied!” She practically shrieked, “You freakin’ lied to me, Kitty! You pretended you didn’t know who Mal was when I asked!” Krista’s volume faded as tears filled her eyes. When she continued, her voice was lower, and she just sounded hurt, “I was so upset when I couldn’t remember ‘im. And you just let me stay like that. You didn’t help.”

Living with Phoebe was so different to living with Krista. The most obvious thing was had her own room, which was so fucking dope. Of course she missed living with Krista, but she’d forgotten what it felt like to have her own space. There was one rule though, her mess was to be confined to her room. Just like her mess was confined to her side of the room with Krista. It was never dirty, just organised chaos. Sort of. Like, she knew her passport was somewhere amongst the mess, along with her favourite fishnet top. If you gave her ten minutes she’d find both things. It was temporary though because her and Krista were looking for somewhere to live. First step was getting a job though, which was a thousand times harder in Mystic Falls compared to Atlanta. The opportunities were limited. It felt like her only jobs were waitressing or bar work. Until Phoebe suggested looking for something remote or commuting to a nearby city. It was classic Kitty having none of this sorted by the time she left college, but she’d find something. In the meantime she was sticking posters up around town for The Ruby Slipper Club, advertising their weekly events. There were a few she was going to tell Krista about. Kitty heard the front door fly open and heavy footsteps come inside, practically slamming into the wooden floor. Phoebe wasn’t the type to stomp around so Kitty slowly emerged from her room to find Krista standing in the apartment. Ah, now the footsteps made sense. Krista seemed pissed, with a scowl on her face. Kitty was about to ask Krista if she was okay but Krista beat her to the point, calling her a liar. Oh fuck. The truth had come out about Mal, which was obviously going to happen at some point. “Course I didn’t tell you!” She threw her hands in the air dramatically, “Well if you remember everything then you’ll remember he trying to fuckin’ bite me.” She puffed out lightly as Krista started to get upset. It was near impossible to argue with Krista because she was a bundle of emotions. “I didn’t want you to remember him… he’s no good for you Krista and I hate you can’t see that… and I’m not sorry I lied to you.” Kitty hated the fact Krista remembered Mal. But Krista was also really mad, and that wasn’t gonna disappear, either. Sometimes, Krista let other people push her around, but there was no way that was gonna happen here. What Kitty did was not nice!
And Kitty didn’t even apologize! She just defended her actions! What the heck! “Yeah, I remember.” Krista puffed, her brows drawing together, a deep frown pulling at her lips. That’s not what this was about, though! And she’d confronted Mal about that! She was gonna tell Kitty as much, but then she kept going, and Krista shook her head sharply, trying to figure out how to say what she was thinking in a way that made sense━a lot of what was in her brain right now was just angry screaming.
“You’re not sorry?” Krista blubbered, beginning to cry. Kitty was her best friend, she wasn’t supposed to hurt Krista like this. “That… that ain’t your decision t’make.” She sniffled, quickly slapping her tears away. “You shouldn’ta lied t’me. He saved my life, y’know. I went to his place, and I fought with him ‘bout trynna bite you, ‘bout the video, and we broke up━you remember.” The few days of heartbreak before she was taken, “Then kidnapped me. I didn’t even remember it. River went an’ found Mal, and Mal found me. He saved me, got me out safe, and the guy who took me made me forget ‘bout Mal. And even then, Mal didn’t give up! He kept comin’ back━you know ‘cause I told you.” She stilled, getting angry again, beginning to boil like a kettle left on too long. Before she could turn red and whistle, though, Krista forced herself to take a deep breath and kept going, “Then he got my memories back. He’s not bad, Kitty, just like I’m not all bad. You don’t think I’m bad, right?” If everybody hated Mal, and he had, like, no friends, then what was to stop that from happening to Krista, too? Maybe she’d be just as mean and anti-social as he was when she was old. Or maybe Mal would make her a vampire and she wouldn’t have to be! But… she wasn’t gonna say that part to Kitty; she’d prob’ly be pissed.

Kitty had never been the type of girl to shy away from confrontation. Sometimes it was needed or maybe it was just the wolf inside of her that kept her running a little hotter than before. But this was different. She didn’t want to argue with Krista. They were the bestest of friends and they’d never fought before, despite living in each other's pockets for a few years. They sometimes bickered about meaningless things, but nothing serious. This felt serious. But nonetheless Kitty couldn’t back down. She was in the right! Mal was a mean vampire who didn’t think twice about nibbling on his girlfriend's best friend. Technically it wasn’t cheating, but Kitty knew in Krista’s mind that it amounted to cheating, but here she was defending the asshole. How could she? They said love made people blind but this was unbelievable. Everything had been so weird the past few months, but overall Kitty was pleased Krista wasn’t experiencing the most painful heartbreak of her life. She was actually happy. Happy without Mal too, proving that she didn’t need him in her life as much as she professed. Kitty’s brows knitted together furiously, “Wait… hold up a minute. Rewind the fuck back… did you just say you were kidnapped?” What the hell? Krista was standing that casually mentioning the fact she was kidnapped. Throwing it into the conversation like it was no big deal. She sighed softly, shaking her head. Course Krista wasn’t a bad person, far from it, just blinded by love. “How can you expect me to believe he’s not a bad person when he tried to hurt me?” It was pretty self-explanatory why Kitty hated Mal. “Did you ask him why he did it?” Apart from the damn obvious. He was hungry and wanted some blood. Krista was there demanding an apology from Kitty, yet Mal still hadn’t apologised for what he did. KRISTA MAY |

“Oh… yeah.” She puffed, “River came by lookin’ for me a little while ago, ‘member? He, um, went to Mal’s next, and then Mal found out where I was. So he went t’go save me.” Krista said awkwardly, trying not to give too much information━she knew Kitty would blame Mal when she found out those people did it ‘cause of him. Also, she came home that night, so she guessed everyone who was worried about her figured it wasn’t a big deal.
“But I lost all my memories ‘bout that night━and about Mal━‘til Mal helped me get ‘em back.” She explained the last of it quietly, and, thankfully, they’d kinda stopped yelling after that. Maybe they could discuss the rest of this calmly━even though Krista was the one who came in freakin’ out. She was just hurt, though.
Tears continued to well in her eyes despite the volume lowering. She understood. Well, she tried to. Krista didn’t think it hurt, but that was ‘cause she liked helping her boyfriend. She didn’t want Kitty helping her boyfriend… or getting hurt by him.
“He wasn’t… it’s not about hurtin’ anyone…” Krista defended him quietly, her voice nothing more than a squeak. And yes, she’d asked, but… they were fighting, and Kitty wouldn’t like the answer. Krista nodded a few times slowly, “Yeah. It was when we broke up, though, so he was… we were both really mad.” And Mal had blamed Krista, saying it wouldn’ta happened if she was there. “I guess he was just… hungry. Which isn’t an excuse. But, um, I was mad ‘bout the video, too, and he was… we didn’t really get t’talk about it. Not really.” Krista said sheepishly, trying to avoid the whole conversation.
She sucked in a breath and looked over Kitty’s face again, desperation in her own expression. “I know ya hate him, and I know what he did was bad, but you shouldn’ta… kept all that from me. I love him, Kitty, an’ he loves me, too. And I want… I want ya both t’be in my life for, like, a really long time.” So something had t’change, ‘cause Krista really hated all this.

Kitty fell silent for a moment, a serious look of confusion on her face as she tried to remember River coming by to look for. River came round a lot and he was generally an anxious dude with a permanent look of panic on his face so something like could have gone unnoticed by Kitty. “I mean.... Maybe? He’s always a bit jittery so… anyway.” It was wild as hell that Krista was kidnapped and Kitty didn’t even notice. It made her feel like an awful friend. “Who kidnapped you?” Who the hell would want to kidnap Krista in the first place? She was so sweet and lovely, but also would probably annoy her kidnappers within two seconds. They’d hand her back. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes so damn hard when she mentioned Mal helped her to get her memories back. Course he did. Slimy Mal wanted to prove he was some hero. It was a little weird that she only lost her memories in connection with him and nothing else. Fucking convenient. Probably only helped her get them back because he missed his little human blood bag. Krista was skirting around the whole situation in true Krista style. Kitty did roll her eyes this time. “So… you were mad, he was angry and I got bit?” The hungry bit was pretty damn obvious but there was a hospital full of blood bags a few blocks down. But she knew Krista and she knew her friend probably liked being able to provide blood to her boyfriend. Sometimes she wanted to grab Krista by the shoulders and shake some fucking sense into her. There was a chance that Mal did love her though, but she’d seen very little evidence of that. Kitty let out a long huff, “Fine. I shouldn’t have lied to you. I’m sorry… I was just trying to protect you. I’m wary of Mal, which I think it’s totally understandable.” A look of sadness washed over Kitty, “I didn’t mean to upset you.” It was pretty clear that this whole Mal situation was out of her hands now and there was nothing she could do to keep Krista and him apart. “Right!” Kitty spoke loudly, “Grab your coat. Let’s go and get ice cream. I’m paying. First step to making this up to you!”KRISTA MAY - da end |
