━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ROXXI UNLOADED THE FRESH INGREDIENTS FROM HER SHOPPING bag onto Chase’s kitchen counter and got to work. Will had asked her for her secret to making the perfect plate of Saltimbocca Alla Romana, and Roxxi simply said she’d get back to him on that━it was muscle memory more than anything else. So, Chase (and Mikey, if he bothered to eat her food) would be subjected to it tonight, along with gnocchi and… yes, sauteed spinach for the side, she’d decided.
With the pot of milk, nutmeg and salt heating up, Roxxi grated the parmesan and pecorino romano cheeses separately, losing herself in the recipe as it unfolded. As soon as the milk was boiling, she tossed in the semolina and kept a close eye on it. Parmesan and eggs were next━as soon as she’d turned off the heat━and, before she rolled the dough onto the parchment, she clipped her hair away from her face.
Today had been particularly difficult in class, though she supposed she couldn’t complain━the summer semesters consisted of her usual schedule cut in half, including half the students and, therefore, half the workload. It was a nice break. Only, it was nearing midterms, and a few students in particular were looking to improve their grades. One of them waltzed into her office, and she honestly had no idea who he was━he’d almost never attended class, and suddenly wanted to get into her good graces. She’d spent longer than necessary re-explaining the same thing over and over. She’d give him the coursework he’d missed if he thought he could get caught up (and ready for the midterm) in a week. After that, he was on his own━show up to class and figure his shit out.
It would’ve been fine if he wasn’t the only one looking for extra credit. The rest of the students who’d come to her were decent enough━punctual, seemingly interested in the class’s content, and received decent grades━but she’d have to find something for them to do. Ooh, she thought, Maybe the blonde could be her TA next semester. She was a bit of a pain in the ass, but her meticulousness would likely come in handy, especially when Roxxi had three hundred papers to grade and still wanted to take time to follow around Chase in the form of a mutt. She wished she could’ve done that today, too, but their schedules didn’t line up, and she much preferred cooking him a big dinner.
Things seemed to be okay again.
Once the dough, rolled into a cone, had cooled in the fridge for twenty minutes, she began slicing it into half-inch circles. Roxxi smiled when she thought about Chase’s birthday, how she’d treated him to something so special, how excited he’d been by it. And later, a slight disappointment that turned good again. Their life seemed nearly perfect by now. The thing with Mikey had been a… hiccup, and so was the video with Mal, but━other than the club, which was on him━they were okay again. At least, she thought Chase and Mikey were back to normal. She wished, for his sake, that she and Mikey could find some semblance of that, too, but perhaps that would never come to fruition.
The disks went into a pan with about half a ton of butter and the rest of the cheese, then the whole thing went into the oven. Roxxi wiped down her surfaces, washed her hands, then brought out the cutting board to start slicing the veal and prosciutto.
She wasn’t under some strange notion that she and Mikey could be friends, only that it wouldn’t be awkward━that they didn’t have to avoid each other in the apartment, could never have a meal as the three of them. And, ultimately, all of this hurt Chase, too. But Mikey wasn’t her enemy. In fact, they had the same enemy, and she’d been using the kanima for that: keeping Chase safe and picking off some of the lower guys one by one. It wasn’t easy to accomplish everything in a single night, but she’d worked her way around it.
The meat went into a bowl of flour, and before she tossed them, Roxxi threw some butter into a cold pan, still waiting to turn it on. Once the meat was out, she made little bite-sized pieces━veal, prosciutto, then a sage leaf━and pinned them all together with a toothpick. She’d have to wait until Chase was a little closer to home, then she’d put everything on to ensure it was still hot when he arrived.
She washed her hands again and picked up her phone, typing out a text to Chase. The moment before she was about to hit send, the door opened, and Roxxi smiled at the kitchen’s doorway, waiting for him to appear. “Hi, Cucciolo! I’m in here! How was your d-” She’d started towards it, ready to practically jump on Chase as he emerged, but stopped when she realized it was Mikey. The smile on her face died almost instantly. “Oh.” It wasn’t because she didn’t want to see him, only that it was awkward now.
Roxxi smiled again, this time far more polite. “Hi. Sorry, I thought you were Chase.” Obviously. She turned and headed back to the counter, where she sent the text to Chase and put her phone down. “Will you be here for dinner?” That was a kind enough olive branch, right? “There’s enough for everyone. It isn’t anything special.” The occasion, she meant━not the dinner. The dinner would be spectacular, but she hoped most of her food was. “Gnocchi to start, and then veal.”
Despite Emiliano being desperate to strip their heritage from them, most of the meals in his home were Mediterranean-style of some sort. Occasionally, he’d slip some Creole cuisine in there, but she supposed he’d gotten used to one thing and couldn’t change it. Plus, it was usually her mom cooking, and that woman would’ve had a fucking mental breakdown if someone told her to mix seafood, sausage, rice and vegetables in the same dish━with enough spice to melt your face off. Regardless, she hoped dinner didn’t trigger some sort of food-specific PTSD for Mikey, or even trigger a memory. Especially not one with Roxxi in it.
“You’re going to have to get used to a lot of this, hm? Considering your girlfriend is also Italian.” Maybe it sounded like a jab, but Roxxi was trying desperately to be nice. Finally, she puffed out a heavy breath like she was tired of walking on eggshells. She was. “We’re okay, right?” Her voice was a little lower now, gentler, though she often wasn’t. “I don’t expect us to hang out all the time or be inseparable or anything, but I thought it was mutually beneficial to help one another during full moons. We don’t have to keep doing that, though, that’s not what I mean.” She sighed again, “What I mean is, I think we should try to be civil, at least for Chase’s sake. I don’t have a problem with you,” Despite telling Chase what’d happened when she very much did not want to. “And I hope you feel the same way.” In other words, truce?

All was forgiven. Mikey was back in his own bed and Roxxi and Chase were back on track. The bar of forgiveness could have been set a little higher for Roxxi, jumping through a few more hoops to prove she was sorry. Maybe. The mentioned video could have played a part in that as well, not that Mikey had been bold enough to bring it up with Chase. Curious sat like an itch beneath the surface not to the point he was going to remind his brother about the video. He tried his best not to pass judgement on Roxxi either without knowing the full story. Slipping back into his own bed was nice but the space on the right was vacant. Yeah he had more room to starfish, but there was no warmth next to him in the night. It was interesting how quickly he grew accustomed to Mab lying next to him. He’d never shared his space with a woman before either, but he was happy to let her in. He was certain there was a flicker of disappointment across Mab’s face when he told her he was moving back in with his brother, but that wasn’t the end of everything for them. They still exchanged text messages everyday and saw each other frequently. It was a friendship they both needed, someone to rely on. There were two downsides to his job. The first was dealing with ridiculous requests from customers about their food like they were some fucking five star diner with Gordan Ramsey managing the place. They pay seven dollars for a burger, so what were they expecting? It infuriated Mikey, but not to the extent it angered Dom. There had been times he had to stop Dom from going out into the diner and killing someone. The second thing was coming home feeling all sticky and craving a shower. It felt like someone had blasting a heater into the kitchen that day. Plus there was that usual smell of fries clinging to his clothing. He unlocked the front door, stepping into Chase’s apartment. He threw his bag down by the door before heading toward the kitchen as he could hear Chase clambering around in there. But his heart sank when he realised it wasn’t Chase, it was Roxxi. The disappointment was apparent in her face too when she spotted him coming into the kitchen. It had gone from joy to dissatisfaction. Roxxi tried to salvage the situation with a smile. Mikey tried his best to match it, but he was still lingering near the door, ready to disappear if things became sour. Slowly he stepped away from the door though. “Um...” The answer was yes, but he took a second to consider the question. Him, Chase and Roxxi all sitting around a dinner table together. He felt he needed to double check with Chase first before agreeing, but by doing so he'd be shining a light on the issue. “Yeah. I think so.” He hadn’t fully committed to dinner, leaving one foot out the door in case Chase wasn’t okay with it. The food did look good though. Far fancier than the shit he threw together at the diner, but again, it was seven dollar burgers. “My what? I ain’t got a girlfriend.” Oh fuck, she was talking about Mab. Mab had told him she’d had the pleasure of meeting Roxxi, although it wasn’t clear how that interaction went. Both of them were fiery women, so not well? “Mab ain’t my girlfriend.” The two had only hugged once and that was when Mikey was leaving Mab’s. A thank you hug, along with the flowers and bottle of wine he also bought for her to say thank you. Roxxi addressed the elephant in the room first, cutting through the tense with a knife to drop the bombshell. Were they okay? Fuck, Mikey had no idea. Roxxi was the one grimacing when Mikey walked into the kitchen. “Yeah we’re okay. I’ve moved past it, so has Chase, so have you. There’s no reason we can’t be civil.” Unless she was unnecessarily rude to Mab when they met. Now they’d glossed over everything he was free to leave the kitchen without it looking like he was running away from Roxxi, but he didn’t rush for the door. “I gotta ask you one thing before we put everythin’ to bed. That video Chase mentioned? What is it?” He needed to know before he could fully accept Roxxi into their family. ROXANNE BRASCHI

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ HE THOUGHT SO, MEANING, OF COURSE, THAT HE STILL wasn’t planning on it. Roxxi wouldn’t have taken that as a definite━knowing him━but it could’ve been. All she had to do was address it.
First, she’d soften it with the topic of food. That had always been her mom’s strategy: food made everything better. She’d picked up that trait from her (along with banging brothers, obviously), which explained why she’d done nothing except dump food on Chase during their “separation.” In any case, clearly there was some miscommunication somewhere. Either Mab just wanted to piss on her territory, or Mikey was less invested than she was.
“Oh,” Roxxi mumbled, looking at Mikey from where she idly tinkered by the stove, not really doing anything, just trying to look busy. “Ah, well… perhaps I misunderstood. She’s Sicilian, so, you know,” Roxxi waved her hand around and scoffed, though she wasn’t really saying anything. Instead of dwelling on it, she quickly changed topics and jumped right into it.
Roxxi was looking at him then, fully turned to Mikey. She smiled, too━it felt like a fucking weight had been lifted off her chest, and she knew Chase would feel the same way. “Great. So, I’ll call you when dinner is ready, then.” She nodded sharply, as though it’d been decided, and turned to check the dough discs in the oven━mostly to give Mikey a moment to leave.
When she turned back, though, Mikey wasn’t gone. She picked up the dish towel just to keep her hands busy, and when he asked his question, her knuckles went white around it. “I’m surprised you haven’t seen it.” Roxxi sighed defeatedly, dark eyes staring downwards, a frown settling on her features. “Months before I started seeing Chase, I… recorded a video with someone. A man.” She puffed. She didn’t know why it was any of Mikey’s business, but clearly he wouldn’t accept her relationship with his brother without an explanation. “I haven’t seen him since then, but someone… I suppose she was jealous. She found it on his phone and sent it to the entire student body.” Roxxi could feel the burn behind her eyes, and she looked away, trying to swallow through it. “I thought I was going to lose my job. Certain students thought it would be funny to play it during class, or continuously send it to my work email. In the end, I was allowed to stay at the college.” She didn’t know what she would’ve done if they hadn’t let her. She would’ve lost everything she’d worked for, and Chase, on top of it all. Surely, Mikey would see that she’d never intended for her past to hurt Chase━he, of all people, should’ve understood that.

The Sicillan comment kind of went over Mikey’s head. He was too busy trying to understand why Roxxi thought Mab was his girlfriend. Yes they shared a bed back at Mab’s apartment and yes she had been coming around to Chase’s apartment, sometimes staying over, but that didn’t mean they were together. They were just friends. Good friends who watched movies together, had sleepovers and called each other most days. “We ain’t together.” He felt the need to repeat that to Roxxi, but also partly saying it to himself as he realised Roxxi seeing Mab emerging from Mikey’s bedroom wearing his clothes in the morning did look a little suspicious. The conversation thankfully moved on as the topic was making Mikey feel a little uncomfortable, but it jumped to another awkward topic as Roxxi asked if they were okay. Everything was civil though and they’d moved past whatever the fuck happened between them. “Sounds good.” He muttered quietly, his attention diverted to the door as he was preparing himself to leave Roxxi to it, except he didn’t. The question about the video had been playing on his mind since it was blurted out by Chase during their argument. He wasn’t stupid either, he knew what type of video it could have been, but he wanted to hear the story from Roxxi. “I don’t go on the internet.” It had advanced far too much since he’d been inside, leaving him feeling out of his depth with it all. They taught them the basics in jail, but they were never given full access to the internet. Google was a fucking minefield to Mikey. He wouldn’t even know where to find this video. Plus, he had no reason to watch it. He’d seen it all before. He stayed silent as Roxxi reeled off the story. “Fuck…” He muttered once it was clear she’d finished talking, “That’s heavy… I’m sorry that happened to you.” Some part of him wanted to reach forward and give Roxxi a hug, “What happened to the girl who sent it? Surprised you ain’t found her and killed her.” There was a hint of humour in his voice at the last part, a tiny smile on his face. ROXANNE BRASCHI - wrap with yours?

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ THE PIT OF HER STOMACH TWISTED AND PULLED, MAKING HER feel sick, uncomfortable━but it seemed necessary. It was for Mikey, anyway. Roxxi sighed heavily and let it out with only minimal pauses to collect herself. She didn’t think she should’ve had to prove herself to Chase’s fucking brother to remain in a relationship with him, but this would make Chase’s life easier, so she did it. Even if Mikey had no right.
She wondered if he’d even accept it. Would he blame her? Would he tell Roxxi she should’ve been more careful, or that she was stupid? He wasn’t completely heartless, though━and not completely stupid. Surely he’d know saying something like that would earn him a fat lip.
In any case, he didn’t. Roxxi smiled sadly, nodding as he responded. Was that it? Did she have his blessing now? “I thought about it,” She scoffed gently, her eyes scanning the oven’s tiny window before sliding back up to his face. “She had to pay for the company I hired to scrub it from the internet, and I filed a restraining order. She will never have any of my classes, which is good, but she didn’t seem like the history kind of student, anyway.” Roxxi smirked to herself. She never liked to label students as “smart” or “stupid,” but that one clearly wasn’t the brightest bulb in the box. She hadn’t even attempted to cover her tracks.
“Thank you, though.” Roxxi added after the fact━for his kindness about it, when it would’ve been so easy for Mikey to make this worse for her and Chase.
Her phone buzzed, and she glanced down, immediately lighting up the moment she saw his name. “Chase will be home soon,” She said after a second “I’ll call you when dinner is ready.” Because she had a feeling he didn’t want to stand around here discussing this any longer, and it gave Mikey a polite way out━not that he needed one.
At least this seemed to mean they were alright now; that they’d found some kind of middle ground where nobody would be stepping on eggshells around anyone else in this house. Apart from, perhaps, Mab.
