Scott had known Stiles for long enough by now to know when the other boy was hiding something and acting strangely, or at least stranger than usual, but the truth was that he hadn’t known what his friend was up to and that had worried him. Scott would be lying if he said that everything that had happened with Allison hadn’t put things in perspective and made him feel scared of losing anyone else and Mystic Falls was a dangerous town so he knew that they all had to be on the alert. Given that he was human and didn’t have Allison’s skills as a hunter, Danny’s druid heritage or Lydia’s banshee abilities to fall back on Stiles was perhaps the most vulnerable out of all of them but Scott knew that his friend would never let that stop him. Stiles had more heart and determination than anyone he had ever met and he had been there with him from the very start of all of the supernatural drama that had ensued over the last year or so and the truth was that Scott knew he would be lost without him. It had been Stiles who had managed to get through to him when Jennifer Blake had caused them all to have hallucinations and he knew that without Stiles there he would have gone through with it so as far as he was concerned he owed it to his friend to always have his back the same way that Stiles had always had his. Of course, that didn’t mean that Stiles was going to make it easy for him to do that but Scott knew better than to give up. Over the last year or so his friends had become so much more than that, they had become his pack, his family, and he knew that he would do everything he could to make sure that he was always there for them when they needed him the same way that they were always there for him. As Stiles qualified his earlier statement, Scott rolled his eyes. “You try most of the time,” he conceded. He knew that Stiles always did what he thought was best for all of them the same way that Scott did himself so he knew better than to hold it against his friend. When it came to keeping each other and everyone else safe there wasn’t anything that they wouldn’t do even if that meant sometimes trying to go it alone. Scott knew that he wasn’t going to let Stiles do that again though, not on this at least, so no matter what the other boy had planned Scott already knew that he would be there. “I don’t know why I’m surprised but I am glad you had people looking out for you,” he admitted as Stiles spoke again. “I know there is a lot more to that story so you can tell me on the way.” He definitely wasn’t going to let Stiles off that easily and his friend probably knew it. Scott had known that Mystic Falls was a dangerous town from the day they arrived but the more they knew about what they were up against the better. Rolling his eyes as Stiles clapped his shoulder, Scott’s eyes stayed on the road as his friend drove. The roads were almost as familiar to him as the ones in Beacon Hills had been but not quite and as Stiles asked if he had been out in the woods yet Scott nodded. “I have a few times. I haven’t come across anything like that but I wasn’t looking for it before.” He had found other things out in the woods, though, including a dead body and another banshee, so the truth was that it wouldn’t surprise him if the demon was hiding out there. “What signs have you found?” he asked, not sure if Stiles had come across anything that might point them in the right direction. Never let it be said that Stiles Stilinski didn’t try. No matter what he got himself involved in, what he was trying to achieve or what promise he made, he threw everything he had into making it happen. Admittedly, there were times when his aim was off, when it was so freaking bad it didn’t just make coach wince and face palm, it screwed up people’s entire lives … but … behind every attempt there was some genuine damn heart. He didn’t go out of his way to make things worse, didn’t head out of the door with the intention to get his best friend bitten or end up with a freaking evil dick of a fox spirit inside of him, doing its best not only to destroy Mystic Falls but to make every single one of his friends suffer while he did it. However the world tried to make him go down, Stiles knew he threw his all into getting it stopped, it was just … as it was proved to him time and time again … by Peter, by Jennifer, by the nogitsune … he was too weak to do much about it half the time. Stiles had tried to make sure that wouldn’t stop him this time, that he wouldn’t have to sit by and watch everyone else get bloodied as they tried to make sure that he wouldn’t get caught up in it all. All that fragile human flesh only protected by a mouth that couldn’t stop even if he wanted it to. If it wasn’t a reality he’d gotten used to it would be freaking sad. He had gotten used to it though, had come to terms with the fact that he had to let others step in sometimes, even the kick ass girls he seemed to find himself around.
Stiles grimace fell away as Scott rolled his eyes at what he’d said. Maybe his friend wasn’t quite as pissed at him, or hurt, over what he’d done as he’d first worried. He grinned at Scott, his fingers working their way up to scratch at the crown of his head. ”And trying the resting of the time?” he suggested. He knew his dad would agree to that, he’d seen the frustration written across his face enough times. Since they’d moved he’d honestly made an effort to keep the weight of his inevitable screw ups off of his dad’s shoulders but it hadn’t been easy. Keeping all of this to himself had seriously taken a toll but for all of them, he’d done it. The corners of Stiles’ mouth tipped up as he nodded. ”You weren’t the only one who was glad. Seriously, if the girls hadn’t been out there, I would’ve been vampire chow and you would’ve been standing there with a whole ‘I told you so’ going on.” If only it would’ve been that simple. His death would rock his best friend the way Allison’s death had shaken them all. Stiles knew he couldn’t stroll practically down the throat of danger again, he had to be wiser than that and right now taking Scott out into the woods was just about the wisest thing he could do without stepping back from his hunt entirely. He couldn’t help but chuckle as he made Scott roll his eyes again. Things were back to being good between them and he was definitely glad about that. ”There’s definitely something out there,” he said, knowing that he wouldn’t have known it was there without having spent every freaking night researching it either. ”Just about every sign of demon activity there is short of actually falling over one. Electrical storms, cattle mutilations, weird power surges. I’ve been marking them on a map in my room, trying to see if lightning’s striking twice anywhere with any of this.” It was what Lydia had seen in his room when she’d come over to check on him. Maps and pinned up papers strung from one side of his closet to the other in an attempt to keep his dad from seeing it.

Scott had always taken comfort from the fact that if there was one person that he could always be honest with then it was Stiles so he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t a little hurt that Stiles had been looking into this alone but at least now he knew the truth and he could finally make sure that his best friend didn’t go getting himself killed. Scott knew how dangerous it could be to go it alone with something like this, he had tried it when they were up against the Alpha pack and that hadn’t ended up well at all so the last thing he wanted was for anything to end up happening to Stiles. The two of them had been through so much together over the last couple of years and even before he was bitten the guy had been a brother to him. They had been there for each other through everything and Scott refused to let that change now. He knew that there were certain things that he hadn’t told Stiles but none of those things were anything major like this and he hoped that now the truth was out Stiles would decide to be honest with him from now on. For years it had been just the two of them against the world and even though they had more people around that they cared about now that still hadn’t changed. The two of them had always been as thick as thieves to the point where his mom had once even tried banning him from seeing Stiles as a punishment so he knew that there was no way that he was going to let Stiles do this on his own any longer.
“Your words, not mine,” Scott teased before giving in and letting a smile form on his face as he looked over at his best friend. He was still hurt that Stiles hadn’t talked to him about this and that he had put himself in so much danger trying to figure this out on his own but thankfully he was fine and Scott was relieved about that. They had already lost Allison once and they could have easily lost her again after they finally managed to get rid of the demon that was possessing her but she had fought to stay with them and Henrik had given her a helping hand getting back to them so Scott refused to lose anyone else like that again. “Just promise me that next time you try something like that you’ll take me with you,” he said, knowing that he would do everything in his power to keep Stiles safe. Scott knew that he wasn’t invincible, he had ended up getting hurt too many times since he was bitten to ever think that way, but he could at least hold his own and the thought of Stiles going out there without anyone for backup and having to rely on the kindness of strangers really terrified him. “You’ll have to show me that map later. Maybe a fresh pair of eyes will help,” he suggested, knowing that if anything it couldn’t hurt to look. A while later, they’d reached the woods and spent a couple of hours searching but to no avail and Scott knew that they couldn’t afford to stay out there any longer. “Stiles, there’s nothing out there or if there is we aren’t going to find it tonight. It is getting late, we’d better head back and try again tomorrow,” he said, knowing that staying out there in the dark wouldn’t do them any good before leading the way out of the woods and back to the truck once Stiles agreed. “We aren’t giving up, we’ll find the demon,” he assured his friend as they finally reached the truck before heading back into town.
