━ one click and you are overwritten ━ December 10th
MAYBE THEY WERE FRIENDS. MAYBE LEX FELT a little weird when he stared at Winter for too long. Maybe, but, actually, probs not. ‘Cause fuck friends. He didn’t need them.
And he didn’t really think birthdays were all that special either━seriously, who the fuck cared━but it wasn’t like he could go around ignoring its existence. Plus, that would be rude, and as much as he was only maybe friends with Winter, he wasn’t gonna make her sad on her birthday. He wasn’t that bad.
Annoyed, though? Probs.
He woke up way earlier than usual, though he’d planned it this time. It didn’t mean he’d gone to sleep early━no fuckin’ way━and he was still irritated when the loud blaring of Winter’s phone forced him to peel his eyes open. Lex was satisfied, too, though, but still acted pissed when he groaned, “Shut that fucking thing up.” She wouldn’t be able to, though━not ‘til it sang “Happy Birthday” (complete with her name) all the way through twice over, with animations of balloons and confetti around the text on her phone.
Lex half-fake grumbled and turned onto his stomach, pulling his pillow over his head. He wished he could see her face later when she was out, ‘cause every time she got a text or a call━or any notification, really━it’d make another obnoxious jingle and wish her Happy Birthday. It was shorter for those notifications, but he’d made sure it’d play at full volume no matter her settings. It was sorta dickish, but he loved the idea of Winter being out somewhere and gettin’ all embarrassed and blushing and shit. Hilarious.
Towards the end of the day, Lex sent her a text to ensure she’d experience it at least once. He didn’t know how many people were gonna text her and shit━hopefully more than just him━but ya never know. He made sure to seem angry in his text━‘cause that seemed to be the only way he knew how to get a girl’s attention━and blamed her for clogging the shower drain. He claimed it was her hair, and that she had to come fix it ‘cause management was threatening to charge them for the damages. Before he sent it, he edited the message to make sure it seemed urgent━he’d say the unit below them flooded. Yeah. Sick.
When Winter got back, though, it’d just be Lex. Sitting on the end of her bed. With a bouquet of flowers━mostly white ones with some dark pops of colour━and a box of chocolates. ‘Cause bitches loved flowers and chocolate.
“Hey.” Lex smiled. He’d even showered for this, and he was wearing the nicest shirt he owned, which was just a plain, dark blue button-down. “Kinda wild your name’s Winter, but your birthday’s in fall. You ever think about that?” He said, completely ignoring the fact that he’d demanded she come home like it was an emergency.
And, despite his all-day torment, he hadn’t actually said it himself. Lex stood and cleared his throat awkwardly, sticking his arm out straight, holding the bouquet out to her. “But the chick said these were winter flowers anyway. I dunno shit about flowers, but they look cool.” Pretty. He almost said pretty. Like something else in this room (not the chocolates, even though their gold box was pretty dope).

She wasn’t the type of person to walk around all day wearing a huge fucking sign that said ‘Happy Birthday’ pinned to her chest nor did she put any corny post on social media about her birthday, forcing people to say Happy Birthday to her. She may have mentioned her birthday once or twice to Lex, but didn’t expect him to remember it, even if it was a big birthday. The big two one. Finally she could go into a bar and order vodka lime soda, not that drinking what her thing, but it was nice to have the option. It bothered her growing up that her dad never remembered her birthday. The man didn’t even know what day of the week it was, so obviously he wasn’t going to remember his daughter's birthday. Winter tried to remind him, even telling him the night before but by sunrise, he’d forgotten. Passed out on the couch, clutching a bottle of whatever whilst his friends were either passed out too or still drinking. Once a year she even pinned a sticky note to the fridge to remind him, thinking he could never miss that because the fridge was where all his precious alcohol was stashed, but the note was crumpled up on the floor the following morning. So whilst the other children were showing off their birthday gifts at school and had balloons scattered across the living room it was just another day for Winter. She never got to experience the sheer excitement the night before her birthday where it was impossible to sleep because there wasn’t anything to look forward to the following day. At least Lori remembered sometimes and in the years she did remember she would bring a cake over for Winter. In the later years, she would receive a text message from Jeremiah wishing her Happy Birthday. Her phone had been on silent from the day she bought it and she certainly didn’t set an alarm yet her phone screamed out that morning causing Winter to jump before peeling her eye mask off. “What the fuck? I ain’t set no alarm.” She muttered, reaching for her phone, trying to switch the damn thing off. There was a small smile on her face when she spotted the text across the screen, wishing her Happy Birthday. “I’m assuming this is your doing?” Finally the sound stopped and Winter placed her phone back down on the bedside table before turning back over to fall back asleep for another hour. A text message came through from Jeremiah as she was collecting her iced latte from the counter at The Coffee Bean. “Jesus fuck…” She reached into her bag, pulling her phone out as the ringtone blared loudly. Winter quickly grabbed her order from the counter and scurried out of The Coffee Bean, flicking through her phone settings to make sure everything was on silent. She was almost certain Lex was behind it all. Thankfully she didn’t have her birthday advertised on Facebook, so no one posted on her page nor did she receive any more texts but whenever a general notification went off the jingle would still play. She managed to wrap her phone up in her scarf and coat then stuff it in the bottom of her bag to minimize the sound, and also to avoid Penny losing her temper and going all dragon on her. Then as she was leaving work the phone chimed up again. A message from Lex complaining about her hair blocking the shower drain. She let out a long ass sigh before responding to Lex to say she would be back in five minutes. Winter rushed through the door, ready to listen to Lex complain about her hair, the drain, the potential flooding, etc, etc but instead he was sitting on the end of her bed with a bouquet of flowers and chocolates. She wasn’t about to jump to conclusions by assuming the flowers and chocolates were for her because he could have been going out on a date, considering the fresh shirt he was wearing. It was clear there was no emergency because Lex was totally cool. “I think my mom assumed it was winter because there was snow outside.” It could have been a toss-up between Winter and Snow. If that was true she was grateful her mom stuck with Winter. Winter broke into a wide smile, taking the flowers from him. “Thank you so much!” Tears almost started to form in her eyes, “No ones ever bought me flowers before… they’re really beautiful.” She admired the bouquet, the smile not fading from her face at all, “I’m guessing you were behind the shit thats been happening with my phone today?” She pulled her eyes away from the flowers, resting them on Lex. “I would give you a hug but I don’t wanna predict your death y’know.” LEX CAMERON

━ one click and you are overwritten ━ EVEN THOUGH LEX DIDN’T ADMIT TO ANYTHING, he was pretty sure Winter put it together. She wasn’t dumb━but he’d never say that to her face. Anyway, as much as he loooved to take creds for a job well done, he was more focused on actually making Winter feel good for the day. Feel, like… seen, or whatever. ‘Cause he knew how shitty it was to be invisible, and he didn’t want her to haveta go through that shit. Not anymore, at least. Not with him.
But that was gay as hell, so he was just gonna say he wanted to fuck with her. ‘Cause he also did wanna do that. When she walked in, though, she wasn’t all flustered and angry at him. Like, at first, she looked all rushed and shit, but she didn’t yell or nothin’. He figured he shoulda been grateful, but he was kinda hoping for more of a bitching out.
Whatevssss. At least she was happy.
“Well, thank fuck she didn’t name you ‘Snow.’” Lex joked, totally unaware she was thinking the same thing. Winter was cool and unique, Snow was just… it would be too obvious her mom was a crackhead.
She really lit up when she took the flowers, and Lex felt his throat get all, like, clogged up or some shit. He cleared it and looked down, feelin’ kinda weird ‘cause his face felt warm. This was better than when her shirt slipped sometimes or she didn’t wear a bra, or even when she was mad at him, but… that was just weird to think about. If they were even friends, then they were only friends.
“Really?” Lex glanced up nervously, almost like he couldn’t resist despite his cheeks, and raised his brows. “No one? Ever?” That seemed dumb. She was hot, and you were supposed to buy chicks flowers. Why hadn’t anyone bothered? Maybe she only knew other weirdo poor people from where she grew up.
Finally, his head came up fully, and he brushed her off with a Psssht sound, waving off the suggestion. “Me? No way. No idea what you’re even saaaayin’, girl.” He smirked, then suddenly felt kinda weird again when she looked at him.
Lex stuffed his hands in his pockets and shrugged, finding it weird that he had a little pit in his stomach when she said she couldn’t hug him. It hadn’t stopped her from hanging off him before, like, when he saved her from the auction, but… whatever. He wasn’t gonna be weird about it. It probs sucked for Winter a lot more than it did for him not getting a hug on her birthday━a hug he didn’t even want.
“Naaah, s’cool.” He shrugged again, and awkwardly swung his shoulders from side to side. “I don’t really do hugs, so… it’s chill.” Lex stepped back and to the side, motioning to the box of chocolates. “Uh, anyway, these are supposedta be dope. I dunno. I only like shitty chocolate, but my dad…” Always got them for his girlfriends. But Lex wasn’t gonna fuckin’ say that out loud. “... Uh, he always said shit like they’re the best or… I got normal chocolate in case they taste like ass.” He shifted to sit on the end of her bed again, this time on one side of the Godiva box so Winter had the rest of the space to herself. He didn’t wanna, like, give her a bad vision or something. Not that they were ever really close enough to touch.

It was nothing short of a miracle that her mom didn’t look outside to see the white snow and thought of crack and called her daughter Crack. Who knows what kind of input the midwives had in the whole situation though. They could have steered her mom away from some tragic names whilst attempting to pry the baby out of her arms, knowing she wasn’t fit to be a mom in the first place, but failed. Winter smiled “I would have done some kind of thing to have it changed.” It was tempting to change her surname when she ran away with the fair, but there was no point. No one was looking for her. She wasn’t about to cry in front of Lex because she’d never hear the end of it, digging at her for crying because someone brought her flowers, but it seriously made her sooooo happy. “No! No one. Ever.” Even some of the creepy customers she had at the fair didn’t give her flowers nor did any of the boys at school. God, not even the regular crackhead at the corner of her road bought her flowers despite throwing compliments at her every day on her way to school. Well, they weren’t so much compliments, rather vulgar statements. But still, no flowers. She should have realised from the outset that it was Lex fucking with her phone. It was a prank that his name was written all over it, but she was too caught up in the embarrassment caused. “Ah yes. It must have been some other dude who can like crawl into phones and shit.” She had watched him do it so many times, but never understood how he did it. Was there a mini version of him running around inside her phone? Thank God she didn’t have any questionable pictures on there. One day she might be able to prevent someone from dying after predicting their death, but it had failed horribly the past two times. She didn’t want to make it a third with Lex, even though nothing happened when she hugged him at the auction. Even though he didn’t do hugs he certainly hugged her back at the auction. The gifts only got better. A box of chocolates too! Lex had truly spoilt her. She moved past him, placing the flowers down gently on her bedside table before picking the chocolates. “These look fancy as hell.” She unwrapped them as gracefully as possible, even though she wanted to just rip the lid off. She picked up one of the chocolates, placed it in her mouth and offered the box over to Lex. “Nice chocolates too!” She mumbled as chewed her way through the piece before swallowing, “Thank you so much Lex. You didn’t have to do all this for me.” She would have been over the moon with a card from Lex, but this made her next level happy. LEX CAMERON

━ one click and you are overwritten ━ CRAWL INTO PHONES. LEX COULDN’T FIGURE out why, but that made him smile. Probs ‘cause it wasn’t really right, but it was cute that that’s how she pictured it. Lex started imagining a tiny version of himself (looking like the running emoji), sprinting around the computer's innards━like what “the internet” looked like in animated movies, all bright and blue and shit.
He presented the chocolates next, really hoping she’d like them, even though… like, it didn’t really matter whether she did or not. He’d still done the nice thing, sooo.
Eventually, Lex found a seat on her bed again, waiting patiently for Winter to test her chocolates. “‘Cause they are super fancy.” He snorted lightly. He’d had them a million times before, so much that he hadn’t eaten them in years ‘cause they were always within reach (and he didn’t like them that much) but he knew Winter hadn’t. And… well, at the risk of sounding totally gay, today was about her, so he wasn’t gonna stop on her toes and shit. She had to enjoy every moment of it, otherwise it wasn’t worth it.
Okay, now he sounded super gay.
Finally, Winter finished a chocolate and praised them, leaving Lex to smile brightly back at her. “Doooope. Glad you like ‘em.” He was gonna wave away her offer, but it felt weird not to share, and he didn’t wanna see her look sad ‘cause he wouldn’t meet her halfway. Lex reached out with a smile, picking up the one he knew wasn’t solid chocolate and tasted semi-decent to what his dad called his uncultured taste buds.
Lex stuffed it in his mouth and chewed kinda quick, just wanting to get it over with, but… maybe it was just ‘cause he was older, but they were better now. Winter looked like she was enjoyin’ them, too, and that only helped Lex feel better about everything. He grinned as he chewed, once in a while dropping his eyes away shyly, an awkward smile twisting at his lips. His face felt hot.
“S’all good,” He shrugged off her gratitude, blue eyes finally sliding up to meet hers. “I just wanted… y’know, we’re both away from our families or, like, people we know and whatever, so…” Lex didn’t really have an explanation, and he wasn’t sure why one felt so necessary. “... Anyway, you’re welcome. Hope your birthday this year isn’t all the way shitty.” That felt like all they could ask for nowadays, but he was stuck wishing he’d made her day pretty freakin’ close to perfect.
