Lawrence couldn’t exactly peel a girl away from the club and back to Teddy’s apartment for so many different reasons, leaving him with no option but to go back to her place and duck out before sunrise. Abandoning the other girl in bed and sneaking off out of her bedroom was a shitty thing to do, but Penny made sure there was no other way. He could leave his number on her bedside table, but what was the point? None of them would compare to what Hannya could offer him or use to offer him. A petite blonde caught his eye that evening in the club. Whilst he was upstairs he was somewhat safe from Hannya and so was the blonde girl he locked lips with on the dancefloor. Soon enough she invited him back to her apartment. Perfect. She bid farewell to her friends, grabbed Lawrence by the hand and guided him out of the building. Heels were shoes made by the devil and hardly any girl could walk straight in them, including the blonde that was hanging off his arm, trying to navigate the sidewalk. She was drunk, but that was fine considering Lawrence had been drinking midday. There wasn’t a single drop of alcohol left in Teddy’s apartment by the time Lawrence left. He was desperate to fill the void and suppress his hunger. Whiskey helped. The blonde broke away from Lawrence as she started to walk backwards in front of him, a wide grin on her face. “Race ya to the clock tower.” The building was in the distance and he could easily have been there in a second. His lips parted, about to protest her idea but she’d already started running. For a small girl she moved fast, but he was at the clock tower long before her. She missed his little magic trick though, her shoes bested her. Lawrence let out a heavy sigh as he approached. Fresh blood seeped out from the wound on her elbow as she clumsily tried to get to her feet. The scent hit him like a train, causing him to seize up. She held her hand out for him to take hold of. He stepped forward slowly, tugging her to her feet before she wrapped his arms around him. Just one taste. A small bite, heal her up, then head back to hers. Easy— He’d been a vampire for decades so he knew exactly what he was doing. It was as if he could already taste the blood rolling around on his tongue before he spoke to her. He tilted her head up and her eyes locked into his. “Come with me.” He took hold of her wrist, pulling her away from the glare of the street light and down a dark side street. He quickly glanced around before tugging her in close, his eyes locked on hers again. “Stay still. Don’t move.” His cast one last glance at her face before sinking his teeth down into her flesh, liquid oozing into his mouth. Time slipped away for a moment as he found himself lost in the feed. It was usually when Hannya’s body started to feel heavy that he would pull away, but he ignored the weight of the girl’s body, telling himself just a tiny bit more. Eventually he pulled back and the girl slumped onto him. It would take a few seconds before Hannya would spring back into action, giggling about how fun that was, insisting they would do it again. The blonde didn’t bounce back though. “Hey…” Fuck, what was her name? He steady her body against the wall as panic started to set in. “Shit, shit, shit.” Lawrence eased the girl down on the ground before taking a bite out of his own wrist, forcing it into her mouth. “Hey. Drink this… please just drink my blood.” She didn’t nudge in the slightest. After a few seconds, Lawrence pulled his wrist back, taking a seat on the floor next to her as he held his head in his hands. Now she was another victim to rest heavily on his conscience for eternity, crushing him from the inside. Lawrence quickly scurried to his feet as he heard someone approaching. “I, um… she was…” What was the point in lying? He was covered in his victim’s blood. He sighed softly before rushing forward in a blur, his hands grabbing the stranger by the shoulders and pinning her against a wall. “Goddammit.” He released his hands from Penny, stepping back immediately, using the sleeve of his coat to wipe his mouth. His night was going from bad to worse. “This isn’t what it looks like… actually no, it’s exactly what it looks like.” Whatever guilt he was feeling building up inside, Penny was about to make it a thousand times worse. “Yes. I’ve just killed that girl and I feel pretty fucking awful about it, so please, just leave me alone.” He wanted her to crawl back into whatever hole she’d emerged from that evening. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY LOVED WEEKENDS. THE MUSEUM wasn’t open and there were no classes at the Salvatore School, which meant she was free to operate on her own schedule. She could be up at all hours of the night, walk across town all by her lonesome (save for a few drunk people early on), and not be bothered by anybody. Penny adored both her job and learning, but nothing compared to having this break━to living life how she was most comfortable.
It was still early enough in the night that she’d see humans staggering out of the club and the bar, but neither of those places appealed to her tonight. Penny stuck her hands in her pockets and inhaled the crisp autumn air, though it was far milder than she thought it should be during the night at this time of year. Still, it wasn’t warm, and she preferred that. As a being who operated on warm temperatures, she was far happier in the cold━y’know, if Penny was ever happy.
Few things in the world truly sparked joy for her. Cold air, her sister, and gold. Fresh shipments had come into the museum on Thursday, and she’d spent all of Friday practically salivating over them. That would be the only reason she was glad to see the weekend come to an end━going back to her artifacts. The gold ones.
She pushed at the ring on her middle finger with her thumb. It was real gold, but it wasn’t as old as some of the ones in her hoard. Lawrence’s hovered somewhere in the middle, though its backstory brought up its value quite a bit. The grin Penny wore when she thought about it didn’t last long.
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.
Following the way the streets twisted and turned, she stilled where they tapered off into a smaller, closed-off one, and listened to the sounds from within. Penny was old enough to know what it was before she rounded the corner━a vampire. Who, though? Well, she should’ve expected that…
Just as she caught sight of the lifeless girl, he advanced in a blur, pinning Penny to the side of the nearest building. Her eyes burst wide━especially because she hadn’t said anything yet━but soon relaxed into a glare. Instead of rattling off an insult, she watched him fall apart. Brown eyes flicked down, assessing Lawrence as he wiped his mouth and stepped away.
Vampires were old, but Penny was sure they weren’t as old as dragons. Having come across dragons and phoenixes whose age dwarfed most of the vampires she’d met, she regarded them as a younger species━especially Lawrence. If Winter’s descriptions were anything to go by (which they were, she trusted the girl quite a bit━professionally, at least), he was only a fraction of Penny’s age. And here he was, crumbling because he couldn’t get ahold of his nature━literally the only thing he was supposed to do. This would be like if Penny was scared of fire. Pathetic.
“Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to work like that.” She puffed, stepping forward off the wall. “You told me you wouldn’t bother me anymore. I guess you lied.” One side of Penny’s lips quirked upwards, not at all phased by the out-of-control vampire or his dead victim.
“Why’re you so upset? Isn’t this what vampires do?” It wasn’t a real question, more a snarky way to take a jab at him, but there was curiosity buried there somewhere. Penny motioned to the girl, and eyed the blood smeared around her own mouth. What had he done? Tried to save her? “Did you feed her your blood?” Penny asked, looking at him with furrowed brows. Was he trying to turn her?

It should have been like riding a bike. Once he was shown how to feed from humans without killing them it should have been embedded in there, never to be forgotten, but somehow he kept falling off the bike even though he had been a vampire for decades. At what point would he get the hang on it? One hundred percent control over his desires. His sister seemed to have nailed it, which didn’t seem fair considering was far more reckless than him. On paper, Lawrence should have been blessed with that ability. He was the more obedient and calmer sibling, whereas Phoebe actively broke the rules and acted on impulses. Yet somehow it was Lawrence ripping open throats and killing humans, but he was never going to turn to his sister for tips and tricks, not after insisting he had everything under control, including Hannya. Phoebe probably saw through his lies, but kept quiet, ready to mop up the mess afterward. For a brief moment it seemed like he had taken Penny by surprise, but her demeanor changed once she realised who it was pinning her against the wall. Ready to tear him apart, but she didn’t even say anything. She just watched as Lawrence started to explain what happened before admitting the truth and telling her to leave him alone. “You’re the one who walked into my path this time…” Since their last meeting there had been a mixture of feelings between never wanting to see her again to wanting to see her again for just one last time. Lawrence ran his fingers through his hair, tugging slightly as he looked down at the girl once more. There was a dumpster at the end of the alley. He could just throw her in there where some poor human would discover her the following morning or maybe even in a week or so. He shot a glare at Penny, his hands falling by his side as he edged further away from Penny. “I’m gonna pretend you didn’t just ask that question.” He bit his tongue for a second, exhaling slowly, but he couldn’t help himself. “I just killed someone and that’s not good… I thought… I’m wasting my time explaining myself to you.” He knew she was trying to get a rise out of him, as always, but he didn’t want to give her the satisfaction. His gaze jumped back to the body on the floor as Penny spoke again, “Yeah.” He muttered quietly, his eyes prickling slightly as emotion was trying to break through. Once he dealt with the body he could rush back to Teddy’s apartment and let it all out, but not yet. Not whilst Penny was there. “I tried to heal her… to save her.” If he’d had stopped a few seconds earlier the girl would have sprung back to life, with no visible wounds, but Lawrence crossed a line. He cleared his throat, turning his attention back to Penny, “Anyway. This has been as tragic as all our other interactions and I have things to do.” He gestured towards the opening of the alleyway, inviting Penny to leave him in peace. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY COULDN’T HELP BUT KEEP smirking, especially when Lawrence was so distressed. It shouldn’t have been entertaining, not with a dead body in their midst, but it was. He tried to blame her this time around, but Penny wasn’t letting him get away with that. She scoffed lightly, “No, you were in my path. I never would’ve seen you if you hadn’t stopped.” And what a joy that would’ve been. But now she had to deal with Lawrence freaking out about the entire reason he was created, and, well, it seemed they were bound to keep bumping into one another━no matter how much they hated it.
Penny supposed she could’ve left. It was what Lawrence told her to do, but she loved to do the opposite of whatever he said. There was no way she’d allow a baby vampire to boss her around, especially when he couldn’t seem to get ahold of himself.
“‘And that’s not good.’” Mocking him, she scoffed again, “You are wasting your time, but it was a genuine question. This is what you’re supposed to do.” Penny shook her head as though she were chastizing a child’s irritating behaviour.
But he went on, and… well, perhaps he wasn’t trying to necessarily turn her, but, in his desperation, he seemed to be willing to do it if it meant she wouldn’t be gone forever━as if life as a vampire was even a life at all. His heart was in the right place, she supposed. It didn’t really tug on Penny’s heartstrings, though there was something below the surface. She didn’t think immortal creatures were above humans in some prejudiced way, but she was old; she’d seen many things die.
“Humans live very, very short lives, and if she hadn’t died today, she could’ve been hit by a bus tomorrow. At least her death went to something. That’s what they say about cows and chickens when they go to slaughter.” Penny spoke as though it was the most natural thing in the world, and… perhaps she was trying to calm him down. She didn’t necessarily care about Lawrence’s conscience, but it would be better if he didn’t cause a scene.
Her eyes flicked to Lawrence as he told her to leave (again), his attempt at an insult causing her to smirk. “Things like what? What’re you going to do, leave her here so another human can discover her tomorrow and cause problems in town?” She snorted, stepping towards the girl and freeing a hand from her jacket. Penny pressed it to Lawrence’s chest, pushing him out of the way as she moved in.
The heat gathered fairly quickly, like a rumble inside of her━a snowball made of dragon’s breath, building and building until she could feel the fire in her chest, her throat, and then suddenly, it burst from her lips. Flames licked the air, then coated the body, reducing it to ash in a matter of seconds. When she was done, Penny closed her mouth and immediately felt the heat dissipate. It crawled back down her throat and chest, curling in her belly to be used later.
She turned to Lawrence, patting him where her hand still laid on his shirt. “There,” Her lips twitched into another smirk, “Problem solved. Nobody will know━except me━so now you’ll just have to deal with the guilt. And me.”

It could have been worse. It could have been Phoebe or Teddy walking past to find him with a human’s blood smeared across his face and clothes. His sister may have taken pity on him, appreciating how difficult it was to control the hunger, but he’d never want her to find him like this. Out of control and ashamed. Teddy however would have freaked out, forgetting that the first time they met they bonded over committing a series of murders. Teddy had reason to kill those people though, Lawrence had no reason to kill the girl apart from the fact she was carrying food through her veins. Nonetheless, Penny was up there with the people he didn’t want to walk past. She’d already called him a monster once before, this was only confirming her choice of words as she stood there with an irritating smirk on her face. He dreamed of wiping it off. “No. You quite clearly turned down this street that I was already in and stopped.” He’d even told her to leave yet she still stood there, staring at him with her judgy eyes. Maybe it would have been better if Teddy found him. No, this wasn’t what he was supposed to do. Yes, vampires wanted to tear apart every single human they set their eyes on, but not Lawrence. He had spent years telling himself he was one of the good ones now. “I’m supposed to drink human blood, but I ain’t supposed to kill people… I supposed to control it, keep them alive.” It felt he had been knocked back to square one with everything. Fresh out of Elk Valley, unable to resist ripping throats open. Lawrence narrowed his eyes slightly at Penny’s comment. Was she trying to make him feel better? Or mocking him? It still didn’t erase the fact he had taken away someone’s life, but realistically in a few decades, his victim would have faded from his mind to be replaced by many more. It was naive of him to tell himself he would never kill a human again with his fangs, but he just didn’t want to do it today. “I’ll be sure to get that printed on a t-shirt.” He quipped, with a tiny smile on his face. It didn’t make him feel any better, but her point held some validity. Penny still wasn’t leaving though. She was clearly basking in his self-pity, enjoying every single second of seeing him suffer. “I know how to dispose of a human body.” Well, throwing it in the dumpster wasn’t exactly a good idea, but it was the only option available. Lawrence took the jacket from Penny, without a choice, and stepped back from her. Lawrence watched in awe as the flames emerged from Penny’s mouth, engulfing the body on the floor and bringing it to ash. She was a dragon and he had been right about the whole thing. He fucking knew it. His mouth just about snapped shut as Penny turned back toward him, patting him on the chest. “Er… thank you… I guess.” He handed her jacket out for her to take. A fraction of the weight had been lifted off his shoulder, but now he was left with the guilt that would eat away at him for a while. “I don’t know which is worse… dealing with you or dealing with the guilt.” There was a smirk on his face that mirrored Penny’s. Both were equally as bad, but he didn’t have to deal with Penny. He could turn his back on her until their next unfortunate encounter. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY WASN’T SURE HOW SHE’D GOTTEN here━in this moment, specifically, with Lawrence. She knew, of course, that she’d turned down this alley and inserted herself into the situation, but at what point had they become… dare she say it… chummy?
Not only was Penny trying to make him feel better, but he was grinning at her and making little jokes of his own. What in the fuck was going on? She had little to no good nature toward the vampire. He was annoying, quite whiny, and his personality contained most traits she hated about modern generations.
At first, Penny wasn’t sure whether Lawrence was being rude when he made his t-shirt comment, but she saw his expression and found herself just barely smiling, too.
So, she’d help. More for Mystic Falls and its population than Lawrence, because her sister seemed to like this town, and why let another “mysterious death” taint it? If she could prevent that, then she would. Penny didn’t give a shit about Lawrence or the dead girl either way. This was for Cassandra.
“Oh, I’m sure you have plenty of ideas.” Penny muttered sarcastically, trusting Lawrence with none of the things bopping around in his otherwise-empty little brain.
Reducing the girl to ash wasn’t hard, though Lawrence’s questions likely would be━only in the sense that she’d have to hear his voice while he asked them. Penny had to admit that she’d done it a little bit on purpose, eager to look him straight in the eyes and claim, again, that she wasn’t a dragon.
Unfortunately, her moment never came, and she frowned deeply at the lack of further entertainment. She supposed Lawrence was too busy wallowing over his nature as a vampire to ask, simply focusing on what she’d said instead of what she’d done.
Penny stood there smirking back at him, somehow unoffended by his jab. Perhaps Lawrence’s personality wasn’t all awful; he had the capability to be somewhat amusing.
“Me. Definitely.” Penny’s smile grew wider for a moment, but by the time she reached out, took her jacket and slipped it on, the corners of her mouth were falling again.
“I would remind you that they’re only lambs taken to slaughter, but the weight of your guilt doesn’t concern me. I’m sure you’ll find a way to bother me again soon enough.” Penny would’ve turned away without a second thought, but he looked... ragged. And the last thing anyone needed was Lawrence turning around and draining someone else on the way home just because he felt sorry for himself. “Come with me.” Penny puffed, still frowning. She reached out and snagged his sleeve in her grip, giving him a rough, forceful tug away. “You look like shit.” So she’d take him to her home and clean him up, then send him on his way again━like a foster dog she only half cared about. Except she didn’t give a shit about Lawrence.
