One minute Raik was in the freezer and the next minute he wasn’t. After asking around it became clear someone had brought him back to life, which was great news for Remzi. Despite pretending he was fine Lawrence knew deep down Remzi was hurting. It was inevitable. His brother had been killed, leaving behind an empty hole in his heart that would never be filled again. Lawrence went through the same grief when he left his sister, accepting the idea he would never see her ago. It almost destroyed him and no doubt it was doing the same thing to Remzi, but the two were finally reunited, just as Lawrence had been reunited with his sister. The name of the witch who brought Raik back wasn’t offered up easily. Remzi was somewhat coy about it, but finally, he let slip that it was a blonde witch who he referred to as jailbait. A few questions later and Lawrence realised it was Cassie who performed the spell and it hadn’t been her first time bringing someone back from the other side. It took him a few hours before he finally slotted everything together in his mind but then he remembered Kit’s brother one day turned up at the bar for a trial shift and no one mentioned the fact Kit’s brother was supposed to be dead. Hector told the other staff to mind their own business and carry on with their job, so Lawrence didn’t think anything more of it and didn’t dare ask Kit about it, knowing he would go full wolf. He was furious with Cassie, which was made worse by the itch in his gums he'd experienced since Hannya unleashed her fury onto him and ended the sweet deal they’d had going on for the past twelve months. He wanted to end things on his terms, not hers and she’d been fucking with him ever since. The only blood bags he had access to were those in the bar considering he couldn’t fill Teddy’s fridge with them without terrifying Julian and probably Teddy too. They were helping a little, but fuck he craved fresh human blood more than ever. Hannya had snatched that away from him leaving Lawrence trying to find another source. There were the reapers, they were incapable of dying, but the small blonde one seemed just as unhinged as Hannya. Maybe if he was absolutely desperate. He had to place his emotions somewhere and unfortunately, Cassie was where he was about to place them. He waited until she entered the bar one evening, given it was impossible for him to go and find her during daylight hours. The first time she came into the bar she was a walking meal, but now she had Hector’s protection. He peeled himself away from the bar, heading for the table where Cassie was sitting. He probably didn’t have long before Lincoln appeared from somewhere. He chewed the inside of his cheek as he sat down across from her. “Have you completely lost your mind?” He kept his voice low as he spoke, “You brought not only one but two people back from the other side… did you use dark magic? Because there’s no fucking way the ancestors would let you do something so stupid.” CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ OKAY, SO CASSIE SPENT A LOT OF HER FREE TIME AT THE bar and was only just passed twenty-one, but so what? When did that become a crime? Literally all the people in Emerald City were always the same, soooo. ‘Cept for the humans, but yaknow. Anyway, she was here for Linc (invited this time) ‘cause they had to be stupid friends and rebuild stupid trust and… whatever. Which, like… Cassie wanted to do all that stuff, but she also wanted to kiss him. Like, all the time. But she couldn’t. So that sucked.
And there was also a chance she’d see Hannya down here, too, which would just be another great thing to add to the list of shit, especially after her little freak-out with Kace. He wouldn’t tell her what Cassie said, right? He was a good friend, but he did tell Leah about her. However, he probs wasn’t working here anymore after Kit found out, which meant he wouldn’t be talking to Hannya anymore. Maybe. Probably. Ugh.
Okay, she was being crazy. Out of all the guys interested in Hannya, why would she choose Linc? He was the cutest guy Cassie had ever met, but he didn’t seem like her type. Maybe that was just wishful thinking━but, seriously, he was her age(ish); Hannya probs liked older dudes like Hector. And Kace. Uuuuuugh.
Thumping down heavily into a chair, Cassie felt like the further she was from the bar, the less likely she was to get noticed by… literally everyone. And maybe Linc could sit for a minute, too.
Except that Hannya obviously didn’t hang by the bar, and when Cassie looked up, the other blonde was staring at her just like on Halloween. Cassie forced a smile, but Hannya flashed her a giant, pearly-white grin and waved, then turned to bend toward some sitting customer from behind and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. Cassie frowned, eyes raking down the woman’s body━and she did mean woman, ‘cause what the hell. Never mind her body, even her hair was perfect. It wasn’t wavy and kinda annoying and frizzy like Cassie’s━it was long, too, and looked super healthy. Like she never lightened it… or could at least afford a bajillion-dollar hairdresser.
Jeez, who was she kidding? Linc would probably love it if Hannya gave him some attention. She’d never felt so jealous over anyone before━at least not since before she died━and she fucking hated it. It made her wanna cry. Where the hell was Linc? Was he behind the bar staring at Hannya’s butt? Was literally everyone staring at her butt? Cassie definitely was. She tried to look away as Hannya stood up straight again, but her eyes were glued to the woman, her own brows furrowed like she couldn’t understand what the hell was going on. Hannya smirked and walked off with a perfect sway to her hips, and Cassie was left staring until Lawrence blocked her view.
Sucking in a breath, Cassie suddenly realized how dry her throat was. She swallowed painfully and blinked the tears from her eyes, expression slowly relaxing until she could smile at Lawrence.
Almost immediately, though, the furrowed brows were back. “Um, hi to you, too.” She grumbled sarcastically, wondering if he was gonna lecture her about being here again. Or maybe for looking at his girlfriend. Orrrrr… for meeting Linc? Honestly, it was a toss-up. The only older guy in her life not mad at her right now was probs Nicky. Actually, yeah, no━he was probably pissed ‘cause she didn’t tell him about Klaus for, like, ever. Great.
Wait, no. He was seriously lecturing her about Raik? About witchcraft and what the freaking ancestors wanted?!
“Not that it’s your any of business, but no, I don’t use Expression. And the ancestors actually helped me ‘cause I asked them for it because the guys deserved it. Why the hell do you care?” Cassie snapped, gathering a bunch of material from her dress in curled fists.
She shook her head, irritated at literally everyone in this situation. Why did Lawrence think he could yell at her for this?! And how the hell did he find out?! Why was Leah running her mouth when she had more to lose than Cassie did?!
“Great.” Cassie huffed, “So, you know━someone who literally isn’t even involved━so Leah must be telling everybody, right? Ugh.” She groaned, body rigid with irritation. Cassie’s arms came flying up and then flopped onto the table.
“I seriously don’t have to explain this to you,” and yet, she would, “But they’re both humans who died accidentally and too early, just like me. So there’s nothing wrong with bringing them back; nature’s gonna balance itself. You lost your magic to become a bloodsucker, so maybe you should shut up about it.” Crossing her arms over her chest, Cassie glared, only feeling a little bad about the bloodsucker comment. He was being rude, though, and she was tired of getting bossed around.

If only he hadn't completed the transition. He could have been sent to the other side and his parents would have certainly looked for a way to bring him back, right? They weren’t bothered about reversing their son’s vampirism, but everything would have been different if Lawrence fought the temptation of blood. It was a theory that rattled around in his head for years after he turned, until he realised that his parents weren’t prepared to pay whatever price was needed to bring their son back. After all, they had another child to give all their attention to and make sure she was fit and capable of becoming the next leader. Why waste their time on Lawrence when they had Phoebe? Depressing but accurate fact. But he wondered what price Cassie had paid for two strangers or what price she was going to pay in the future. “Helped you? The ancestors don’t just help people for nothing, they always want something in return.” Lawrence didn’t deserve to die but the ancestors didn’t exactly help him or his parents. “What do you mean why do I care? I care because I don’t want my friend getting caught up in dark shit.” And end up dead, again. Lawrence frowned a little when Cassie mentioned Leah’s name. The petite blonde who barked her drinks order at him yet never paid for them. Of course she was involved. “No Leah didn’t tell me… the guy you brought back, Raik, he was in our work freezer until recently… I asked around a little and sussed the rest out.” He owed Remzi nothing, but Lawrence didn’t want to throw him under the bus. “It doesn’t really matter how I found out but if other people find out you’re gonna have a target on your back.” She will be labeled as the witch who was willing to bring everyone’s mom, dad, brother and sister back from the dead. He removed his arms off the table, settling back into his chair, obviously taken aback by Cassie’s comment. “I—” He was about to reel off a speech about how he didn’t choose to become a ‘blooksucker’ nor did he want to lose his magic, albeit he chose to latch onto his dads friends neck, drain him of life and complete the transition, but that wasn’t the point. The spotlight wasn’t on him, it was on Cassie. “People die accidentally and too early every single day so are you gonna bring them back too?” The town would be full to the brim if everyone who didn’t deserve to die was given a second chance. “Where did you even find a spell?” Maybe it was one of the coven rules he still stuck to, despite everything. It was hammered into him and Phoebe from birth and anyone found practicing such spells was immediately banished from the coven. He remained glued to the back of the chair, still somewhat hurt by Cassie’s comment, with his arms now folded too. “Does Linc know?” Lawrence wasn’t going to snitch on Cassie if he didn’t, but if he did it was another person Lawrence was prepared to hunt down and yell at for letting Cassie do something so dangerous. Ultimately, he was only trying to look out for his friend. A person he cared about and would hate to see dragged back to the other side because of her careless actions. CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE SCOFFED AND ROLLED HER EYES AT Lawrence, super irritated by his… annoying-ness. She didn’t wanna be lectured any more than your average teenage girl, especially by someone who wasn’t even her parent. “Oh yeah? You think the girl who got her throat cut at sixteen doesn’t know that?” Cassie snapped back. Lawrence had seemed a little uncomfy about the whole Harvest Ritual when they first met, so why the hell was he forgetting about it now? Like Cassie didn’t give her literal life for the ancestors.
They were friends? Cassie had to resist smiling. Like, she totally considered Lawrence her friend, but she didn’t know if he felt the same way. She was happy he did, though… even if it was stupid and annoying now.
“Well, I’m not. And I dunno about you, but I don’t remember it ever being cool to lecture your friends.” Which was totally not true, ‘cause Monique loved to give a freakin’ lecture. And, like, that was the whole point! Did Lawrence wanna be a friend like Monique? No way!
“The freezer? Ew.” She mumbled, frowning now, eyes flicking towards the back room. But if he didn’t hear it from Leah, then where the heck did he hear it from? And why was everyone talking? They were supposed to keep it quiet! “Yes, it does really matter.” Cassie glared, “‘Cause everyone agreed not to tell. So are you lying or not?” Especially if other people found out. Lawrence was right━it wasn’t good if they did, ‘cause then everyone would want a favour and all the ghosts and stuff wouldn’t leave her the hell alone.
So, she was mean to Lawrence. And, yeah, it was a shitty thing to say, but it was shitty for him to come… yell at her like this! Maybe if he got offended, he’d just leave her alone, but noooo, he had to settle into his chair and stay awhile, huh? Uuuuuugh. “No!” Cassie exclaimed, a little too loud and whiny for the situation, causing a few vamp heads to turn in her direction. Plus Hannya. Uuuugh times two. “I was just helpin’ someone I know, okay? I know what I’m doing. I know it’s dangerous. It’s not a big deal.” Okay, it was, but she was trying to play it down so Lawrence would, like, chill out. If that was at all possible. Gosh, were all old vampires wound so tight?
“My grandma’s a medium. Also, not only am I part of a big, powerful coven, but dying and coming back and staying a witch strengthens your tether to the other side. It’s not hard.” That wasn’t true━even for Harvest-Ritual-Charged-Witch it usually left her weak and nosebleed-y, but it didn’t kill her. Also, yeah, she was making another dig at his vampirism, but she just wanted Lawrence to stop.
And then he brought up Linc. And Cassie didn’t know why, but that really bugged her. Maybe later, when she was running over this conversation again in her head, she’d be like Ooooh, does Linc talk about me? Is that why Lawrence said it?but for now, Cassie felt defensive over the guy she liked. He didn’t like her any less ‘cause she helped dead dudes, right? Or, uh, okay, not like-like her, ‘cause they were just friends━but he didn’t wanna be her friend any less, right? “Yeah, he does. Why? Were you gonna tell on me?” Cassie shook her head, blonde curls sweeping back and forth over her shoulders. “‘Cause then you’d just be telling another person, which you said was bad. So you better not tell anybody.” And she wanted to know who the hell told Lawrence ‘cause that wasn’t cool. It wasn’t like Cassie was itching to have another conversation with Leah, but she’d have to talk to her about this. Ugh, she actually thought she could trust Leah ‘cause she was a reaper.

As he sat there lecturing Cassie about how she should and shouldn’t use her magic he was reminded of his human days when he would be doing the exact same thing with Phoebe. No, they couldn’t sneak out of bed after dark to go and explore the woods around their house because that’s where bad things lurked. Werewolves and vampires. They were to remain inside where it was safe. Phoebe never listened though, just as Cassie wasn’t listening to him right now. Well, she was agreeing the ancestors didn’t just offer their help with ease. Everything came with a price. “Jesus Murphy.” He muttered. He wanted to throw his hands in the air with frustration because Cassie was behavior like a typical teenager. “I don’t care if it’s not cool but someone’s gotta warn you that you’re fucking around with dark stuff.” Remzi and his blonde side piece weren’t going to reel off the dangers to Cassie because they were benefiting from her magic. He hated to admit it to himself, but Remzi probably didn’t care if Cassie was swallowed whole by dark magic so long as he got his brother back. Needlessly to say Lawrence would probably do the same for Phoebe. If she was taken from him he would tear the town apart until he got his sister back, even if that involved leading a young witch to darkness. Sometimes things slotted together in his mind, not always, but every now and then a little light bulb would spark up inside his head. Phoebe would have put all the pieces together a lot quicker when it came to Remzi and his brother, but it took Lawrence a little longer. “I’m not lying. Remzi told me some young blonde witch helped him. He never gave me your name, but it was pretty obvious.” Lawrence was quick to tell Remzi to keep that to himself. He didn’t want the idiot putting Cassie in any danger. “Congratulations. You were brought back as a witch… I’d rather be a vampire than tethered to asshole ancestors.” He was quick to snap before inhaling deeply. The hunger in his stomach was becoming painful and there was no sign of Hannya in the bar. “Not hard? Doesn’t make you feel dizzy and weak afterward? And your nose doesn’t bleed, no?” Lawrence had been pushed too far by his dad plenty of times when he was learning how to use his magic. There would only be a break if his mom was watching from afar and convinced his dad it was time to call it a day. There were moments when he felt physically and mentally drained, but his dad would ignore the blood dripping from Lawrence’s nose, telling his son he needed to get stronger. “A spell like that can kill you and you’d be an idiot to think anything it wouldn’t.” Lawrence frowned, shaking his head immediately, “I wouldn’t tell Linc anything… I just find it weird that he’s okay with you risking your life for people you don’t even know.” His loyalties lay with Cassie, not Linc. Cassie could sit in front of him and confess to killing someone and he wouldn’t utter a word to anyone. “I ain’t gonna tell anyone… I wouldn’t put you in danger like that!” CASSIE LUANNA

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ REMZI. WOOOOW, YOU’D THINK THE DUDE woulda been so happy to get his brother back that he’d, like, keep his friggin’ mouth shut. Cassie would totally confront Leah about it if the chick didn’t, like… kinda scare her a bit. But seriously! What about “don’t tell anyone” was hard to understand?! “Uuuugh.” Cassie grumbled and rolled her eyes dramatically, irritated by everybody and their big flappin’ mouths. She could only imagine how much he’d spread the daylight ring shit around. Which, like, okay, that was probs good business for Nicky, but still!
Cassie scoffed when Lawrence snapped back at her. Truthfully, she was kinda upset that he raised his voice, but she figured she kinda couldn’t be, considering. “No you wouldn’t.” Her eyes narrowed. She was gonna be mean, and she didn’t wanna be, but… “You seriously wouldn’t wanna deal with a couple of annoying ancestors versus being cooped up in a place like this all day and hearing everyone’s heartbeats all the time?! Constantly wanting to rip their throats out?! Yeah, right!” Cassie was getting louder, and beginning to attract a few looks in her direction. She wasn’t scared, but she definitely deflated a little bit and frowned.
“I mean, obviously.” She puffed, rolling her eyes again and looking away. It sucked that Lawrence had previously been a witch, too, ‘cause then he knew all the stuff to hit her with. “But could you pull off that spell at any time? I don’t think so.” Cassie puffed, raising her chin slightly.
She knew it could kill her. But she had a whole buncha power and a tether to the other side, so why waste it when she could help some people who also died early? She wasn’t gonna not use this gift when she could help other people stop suffering like she had. Maybe her family would still be around if she’d gotten back as early as Kace or Raik.
Linc probs didn’t know that it, like, risked her life or whatever. She wasn’t really forthcoming with the consequences. But that wasn’t any of Lawrence’s business, either! “Good! You better not!” Cassie puffed, slipping off her chair. “... About both things!” She leaned in to whisper-yell at him, eyes narrowed like it was a threat. “Super nice seein’ you, Lawrence━A-fricken-plus hangout.” Lifting a sarcastic thumbs-up, Cassie frowned and turned away, stomping off as she saw Linc appear from behind the bar. She didn’t know why Lawrence, of all people, was concerned with what she was doing, but she still hoped he wasn’t gonna be mad at her forever. Or an asshole. Normal friends had fights, right? Yeah… they were gonna be okay.
