━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ REMZI DIDN’T SAY WHERE HE WAS GOING, only that, when he was back, she wouldn’t have to pretend to be his brother anymore. Ayla was thankful for that━pretending to be Raik really turned her stomach, and it was not what she’d expected when she’d arrived in America. It wasn’t her fault she changed against her will, and it felt as though Remzi was… exploiting her abilities.
No, no, that wasn’t right. Remzi would never do something like that; he didn’t mean it! She was helping him, and that was good━it would make it easier to be with him later. It would help their relationship, and that was all Ayla wanted to do━make this work.
And, yes, turning into Raik made her skin crawl, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t… interesting to shift into a man. She was in this woman’s apartment━the stranger whose home Remzi was staying in━and it was empty, so why wouldn’t she give the skin one last… try? Was that weird? Probably.
It didn’t matter, though, because she’d changed into some of Raik’s clothes (the ones Remzi stored and sometimes made her put on, though he often spared his own when possible). He didn’t like to look at her when she appeared as his brother, and she wondered if that was guilt. He’d spilled the entire story, of course, and hadn’t anticipated any shock whatsoever from Ayla. But how could she not be scared? He said his brother had accidentally been killed and that they had a plan to fix it━how was she supposed to react?!
In any case, supposedly it would all be over soon, though Ayla wasn’t sure why she trusted Remzi; he didn’t have a great track record so far.
Standing in front of the blonde woman’s full-length mirror (she seemed to have a lot of them), Ayla admired her borrowed features closely. Before, she was always with someone, and Remzi never wanted her changed for long, but now she was alone in this bedroom and could stare to her heart’s content. Each little scar and divet in his otherwise-perfect skin was mapped with her fingers and, slowly━with hot, red cheeks━she lifted the t-shirt and inspected the hard lines of his abdomen. Catching the fabric under her chin to hold it there, Ayla experimented with sucking in a breath and letting it out, seeing how his muscles flexed with the movement.
Her fingertips tracked down, dipping into the waistband of her━his━sweatpants. This was bad. Too far. She shouldn’t… but she was curious, and she’d never seen━
No, never. Remzi was more than generous with his offers, of course, but she didn’t want… she was saving herself for marriage. But it would be good to know, right? Then she’d have an idea about what she was getting into later on, how to… be a good wife. So it made sense…
Her fingers flexed, pulling on band, though Ayla only saw a patch of skin before she heard the door and let go. The elastic slapped onto her waist, head raising, freeing the cotton trapped under her (his) chin, which was full of facial hair. It was incredibly itchy; she didn’t know how men did this.
Ayla’s attention snapped to the bedroom door. It was slightly ajar, but now it swung open, and she expected to see Remzi standing there.
It wasn’t. It was a reflection of the face she wore now, just like the one in the mirror.
Except he was real.
Raik was here.
Ayla gasped, shouting, “Oha!” As she was literally scared out of her skin. Suddenly, she shrunk more than half a foot, drowning in Raik’s clothes. She stared with wide eyes, mouth hanging open in a way her mom would’ve chided her for. “You… oh, hi━um, I’m so sorry, I was just━I didn’t know anybody would be home so soon and━” She spoke in Turkish as her English was still very poor, but it all came out almost in one long word. A million things raced through her mind at once, and she couldn’t think of any of them coherently.

The last thing he wanted to do was to drive all the way back to Detroit with his brother to celebrate their joint birthday, but he had no option. If they didn’t go their parents would be asking a thousand questions and their mom would probably guilt them by crying on Facetime telling the two she misses them so much. There would be a promise of gifts too. Raik was tempted to tell Remzi to take Ayla with him and she could pretend to be him, but that wasn’t fair on her to be dragged into the shit with him and Remzi. Plus their mom would see through Ayla’s act pretty quickly, especially in person. What was even worse he would need to put on his own act for his parents in pretending everything was okay and he hadn’t just come back to life after spending five months dead. He had to act as if everything was fine between him and Remzi. He had never been one to hold a grudge, but he was struggling to forgive Remzi. He needed more time and space away from his brother, but that would be impossible over the next few days. Their mom would force them to stand together so she could take pictures of her precious boys, which could easily turn into a ten minute task, all whilst Raik was wearing a forced smile. Smiling through the pain. Their mom would then upload a dozen pictures on Facebook, all of which look identical, with a caption about how much she loves having her son's home. Maybe Raik would have to take a backseat whilst their mom took pictures of Ayla and Remzi, beaming about the fact that Remzi had finally had a marriage in the pipeline. No doubt she would be grilling Raik about his love life, asking where his future wife was. It was going to be hell. Pure hell. Raik thought coming back to life was going to be a relief, but it was weird. Suddenly everyone could see him, people were talking to him and he felt things sure as hunger and tiredness. It was overwhelming. He could have been basking in peace in heaven, but instead he was walking the streets of Mystic Falls, making his way to Hannya’s apartment to pack for Detroit. He couldn’t put into words how he felt, but whatever he was feeling he hated it. Remzi got his way, yet again, and Raik was left going along with whatever Remzi wanted. He wanted his older brother alive and here he was. At least Remzi moved out of the hotel after Raik was killed. Raik couldn’t imagine anything worse than having to enter that building again. He refused to even walk past the hotel and just thinking about the place filled him with fear, but what scared him even more was that Grey and Destiny were still in Mystic Falls. Leah tried to reassure him, telling him it was a one off sacrifice and it wouldn’t happen again, as if that made it any better, but he didn’t believe him. The couple would do it all again if they were given the chance. There was a sigh of relief when he opened the apartment door and he was greeted with silence. Well, almost silence. He could faintly hear a noise coming from Remzi’s bedroom (that wasn’t even his bedroom). He stood near the front door for a moment, mentally preparing himself to see either Leah or Remzi standing in the bedroom or maybe even that demon woman, but he didn’t expect to see himself standing in the bedroom He took a step back, letting out a gasp that matched his own, “What the...” He looked even more concerned when his own body started to shrink and change into someone else. Ayla. “Um… hi…” He let out a nervous laugh, tugging at his beard lightly. She looked so cute buried in his clothes, it brought a smile to his face. “Did Remzi ask you to call our parents again? Because you don’t have to do that anymore because… well you know I’m here now… alive and well.” His voice trailed off. Yes, he was alive, but he wasn’t sure about the well part. “You’re coming to Detroit with us?” It pained him that Remzi was unfaithful to Ayla, jumping into bed with both Leah and Hannya. The woman deserved so much better than his brother, but maybe deep down even she knew that. Remzi didn’t exactly treat Ayla with the respect she deserved, but Raik was determined to keep an eye on Ayla, making sure his little brother wouldn’t break her heart or ruin her life. AYLA KIRAZ

━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ OH, THIS WAS THE WORST THING SHE’D EVER experienced. It was, wasn’t it? Ayla couldn’t imagine something more awful than this, getting caught in someone else’s body by that someone else. Raik would think she was strange now, and Ayla would have no one to talk to in America because Remzi didn’t seem very interested in conversation. It shouldn’t have bothered her so much what Raik thought, but… he was her future brother-in-law! Of course it mattered!
Would he tell Remzi? Would Remzi decide not to marry her? Would she be sent back to Turkey and bring shame to her whole family? Would it be better if she just died on the spot right now, like vanished into thin air?
To the last one (at least), the answer was wholly and unequivocally, yes.
Oh. Oh. He was giving her a way out. Ayla swallowed hard, trying to manoeuvre this without lying━something she hated doing. Nodding a few times frantically, like an over-excited puppy, Ayla finally smiled, showing teeth━she was really nervous.
“Oh… good, that’s good.” Ayla nodded twice more before finally stopping━her head might just roll off her body if she did it again. “Yes, I really hated doing that for him. It felt… wrong, but I didn’t want to upset your parents. And yes,” She answered the second part quickly, as though she was running out of time to respond, “Yes, I am coming to Detroit with you both. I can’t exactly stay here with these strangers…” Ayla laughed sheepishly.
There, she thought, Perfect, now he’ll think I was just getting ready for a phone call, and I didn’t have to lie!
“Wait.” Ayla stopped suddenly, brows furrowing as she stared up at him, her look of shock and embarrassment turning to confusion. “You… passed away? And now you’re alive? How? That’s not━people can’t just die━” Beginning to freak out, Ayla moved to step back, but tripped on one of Raik’s long pant legs and went tumbling to the floor, catching herself by her elbows. She yelped at the impact, but knew there would be no scrapes left by it━just the pain. Honestly, she was surprised she hadn’t shifted again━that would be just her luck.

His brother was one lucky son of a bitch who was always managing to get through things by the skin of his teeth. Remzi had even managed to dodge death when he became a vampire, unlike Raik who spent months isolated, cold and alone on the other side. Then to add a cherry on top the woman he was set to marry was a shapeshifter and could change into Raik to avoid questions from their parents. Pure luck. To rub salt in the wound their mom had set Remzi up with a beautiful woman. Where was his future wife from Turkey? Guilt had been consuming him since being brought back to life. He should have been thankful and grateful that Cassie had succeeded with the spell. He was alive again, given a second chance that people could only dream of, but he didn’t feel any of those things. There was something great that lay beyond the other side. Heaven. Every fiber in his body wanted to go there because he could feel that he didn’t belong in limbo. It was a place that wasn’t designed to hold souls for months on end. He had been deprived of heaven because people in the land of the living weren’t ready to let go. Alongside that everything was just so damn overwhelming. The only interactions he’d had was with Freyja and Leah now suddenly he was interacting with triple the number of people. He thought he’d feel different, but somehow he felt worse. It wasn’t easy to shake the feeling of death. Hopefully Ayla was the last person to be hauled into the drama between Leah and Grey. The list was getting far too long and he didn’t feel comfortable with the fact Ayla’s name was now on it. She’d come to America for a better life, like his parents did when they were younger. Remzi wasn’t going to show her the beauty of America either. Perhaps Raik could. “Thank you for doing it though. I really appreciate it… I think our mom was close to driving down to Mystic Falls to speak with me.” Then Remzi would need to come up with more lies as to where Raik was. Lies on top of lies. It was never ending. “Yeah… it’s a weird living situation here. Hopefully, you and Remzi can find somewhere else soon.” Meanwhile Raik could find his own place giving him some space from his brother. They had been living in each other’s back pockets since he returned from the military. “Oh…” Remzi hadn’t told Ayla the full story. Shit. He leaped forward in an attempt to try and catch Ayla before she hit the floor, but his fingertips missed hers by a second. He kneeled down in front of her. “Are you okay?” He reached over, taking hold of her left arm gently to check her elbow for any sign of an injury before doing the same with the right. “Sorry. I was stupid enough to think Remzi had told you everything.” He sighed softly, letting go of Ayla’s arm, remaining kneeling on the floor. “Yeah. I was dead for a few months which was why Remzi was asking you to pretend to be me because our parents have no idea. A witch brought me back to life recently and… here I am.” It wasn’t the full story but he wasn’t ready to talk about how he was murdered by someone. AYLA KIRAZ

━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ AYLA NODDED, A NERVOUS SMILE PULLING at the edges of her lips. She couldn’t imagine Remzi wanting to settle down anywhere with her, but Ayla still held onto images of the married life she’d always dreamed about. A house, larger than the one she’d grown up in but not too big; living in a suburb, close enough to the city when needed but far enough that it was quiet; a loving husband (who could cook), and at least two children.
Well… Mystic Falls was a town, not a suburb, but that counted, right? So, one out of three. That wasn’t too bad. Perhaps she could convince Remzi to find a job, and they could buy a house! It seemed impossible, but Ayla was willing to try.
“Will you come with us?” The question slipped out before Ayla could stop it. Would that be strange? No, perhaps not, not if they didn’t have children yet. Raik could be like a roommate, which she’d assume wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, as Remzi had mentioned something about them living together before all this. He hadn’t explicitly told her anything, but she’d inferred from conversations with him, and hoped her guess was correct. Hoped Raik wouldn’t find her question weird.
But it would be nice to have Raik around. A level-headed antonym to his brother, whom Ayla had trouble interacting with on occasion. Actually, on most occasions.
Just as she was giving herself a mental pat on the back for coming up with yet another way to weasel out of her own verbal minefield, Ayla stumbled (literally) on a very concerning fact. It sent her to the ground, elbows blazing, and Raik… he kneeled down to her. He was such a gentleman; she wanted to believe Remzi would do the same thing, but Ayla could imagine him laughing at her first. Raik didn’t laugh. He cared.
Raik even went so far as to check both of her elbows, and even though Ayla knew he’d find nothing, she allowed him. Well, she more so just sat and stared while he did, a slow, bashful smile consuming her expression. “I think so.” Ayla said eventually (when she regained the ability to do more than just stare), “It’s alright.” She mumbled, both about her fall and Remzi.
Slowly, Ayla sat up straight, though they both remained there as he spilled his story to her, now significantly closer than they already were. “A witch?” Her eyes went wide again. The story was crazy, and yet Ayla wanted to believe him. “It seems there is far more out there than I could have ever imagined. I’m so sorry you went through that.” She wanted to berate him with questions about the possibility of these things, but it seemed like it wasn’t the time. “I cannot begin to… oh, that must have been awful.” Overwhelmed with sadness for him, Ayla shifted forward and threw her arms around Raik, squeezing him in a hug. Words weren’t enough to express how horrible she felt on his behalf, just as she was sure it was as difficult to explain.
When Ayla pulled back to look at his face, she had a big speech planned. She was going to say something really nice and encouraging, hopefully to get his spirits up, but the moment she met his eyes, everything faded away. Each thought in her brain evaporated, leaving it empty as she sunk into those honey-coloured eyes. Far warmer than the steel blue of his brother’s; more inviting. Ayla blushed, but she found herself incapable of moving away, arms still loosely slung around his shoulders.
She tried to ignore the idea that this was what she was supposed to feel for Remzi. The fairytale ‘feeling’ she’d always dreamt of, and it was for a man that wasn’t her betrothed. Her future brother-in-law, actually. Unfortunate in a number of ways.

Sometimes he missed the structure provided to him by the military. He was told when to wake up, when to have breakfast and when to shower. Now everything was so chaotic and not even in a fun sense. All his stuff was stored in bags scattered across a demon’s apartment, where Remzi, Leah and Ayla also seemed to live. It was impossible for Raik to live there as well. “Probably not.” He admitted with a sad smile, “But I’ll find somewhere closeby.” He quickly added. Raik would have loved to believe his brother wouldn’t harm Ayla, but every single assumption he had about his brother in the past twelve months had been wrong. “Plus you guys will want your own space once you’re married.” The safest thing was for her to sprint to the nearest airport and board the first flight back to Turkey, but he knew how these things worked out. Soon she would be walking down the aisle to say I do to please both sets of parents. The news he’d been dead this whole time sent her crashing into the ground, causing Raik to kneel down in front of her and check she was okay. Once he was happy she wasn’t hurt, his eyes flickered back toward her gaze. A small smile spread across his face, mirroring hers. “All good.” With slight gestation he let go of her arm. He didn’t get to his feet straight away, even though the jean fabric was stretching tightly across his thighs. He was certain he’d accidentally climbed into Remzi’s jeans that morning. Everything felt so restricted. “There’s so much out there. More than I can wrap my head around.” Vampires were just the surface of this whole fucked up world he had been thrown into. He wasn’t expecting Ayla to fling her arms around him and bring him in for a deep hug. His chest tightened for a moment before his body relaxed. Raik had been completely deprived of any human contact on the other side to the point he’d almost forgotten what it felt like to be hugged. A warm body wrapped around him, holding him close and securely. His mom would give him the same hugs whenever he was feeling down and it would make all his problems disappear. He brought his hands up, placing them on Ayla’s back, feeling the heat of her body seep through her clothes. As he closed his eyes to take in Ayla’s scent, from the shampoo she used down to the perfume on her neck, he was worried tears were going to come flowing out of him. Ayla was the first person who seemed to have genuine empathy for what Raik had been through. She broke away after a while, but sooner than Raik wished. He could have sat there all day hugging her, forgetting about the rest of the world. He wanted to thank Ayla and tell her everything was fine and dying was no big deal, but the words got caught in his throat as he stared back into her dark eyes. His hands rested on Ayla’s back lightly as he couldn’t bring himself to pull away from her completely. Raik was a man of morals and followed rules, such as not kissing your brother’s fiancé no matter how breathtakingly beautiful she was. After what felt like hours he finally pulled his hands back, breaking away from Ayla’s gaze as he got to his feet. “There’s a place in town that does Turkish coffee. Should we go?” He extended his hand out for Ayla to take. The sensible voice inside his head was screaming at him to leave the apartment, but he wanted to spend just a little bit longer with Ayla. ━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ SHE COULD HAVE KISSED HIM. HONESTLY, TRULY, and she would’ve loved it, too. She wondered what Raik’s mouth would feel like against hers, and the scrape of his beard, and… oh, this was all too much. Too much and wrong, especially considering he was to be her brother-in-law… if Remzi ever got his act together.
She should have pulled away from the hug at an appropriate moment, too. But Ayla… well, she wasn’t perfect, and if she had a stronger will, she would likely not be in America at the moment. So she stayed in his arms, staring up into Raik’s eyes for as long as he’d allow her, and enjoying the feeling of his hands pressed to her body. Hers now, finally. She knew what it was like to touch things with those hands, but she never could’ve imagined this. The way he’d feel.
Just as Ayla started to blister with heat and begin to get overwhelmed, Raik pulled away. Though she hated it, Ayla knew it was the best thing he could’ve done. It was… better this way.
But that wouldn’t stop her from holding his hand on the way to the coffee shop.
She smiled, climbing to her feet and squeezing his hand gently. “Yes, I would love that.” She beamed, “Though… I should probably change first.” Ayla giggled sheepishly, still covered in a deep pink blush. She would put on clothes that fit her, but then she would hold Raik’s hand all the way to the coffee shop, where she would perhaps ease a small part of her homesickness.
