━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ CURTIS COULDN’T BELIEVE HIS LUCK━IF YOU COULD even call it that. Moving to Mystic Falls was supposed to be good for his family, but all it’d brought so far was… pain and torment and a whole slew of headaches. Curtis couldn’t even begin to find a way to sort through the events; they were too plentiful.
When he was at work━and not following his son to a school Adam had kept hidden━he tried to be at work. If his mind wandered too far, then Curtis would surely lose control here, too━which was just about the only place where he still had both hands on the wheel.
Another headache pierced his temple, then began to spread, gathering in a swarm at his forehead. With a groan, he drained half the water on his desk, and continued to squint at his screen. Whitmore wanted to sign a new contract but, better than that, construction was going smoothly for their new building in Norway. Curtis smiled despite the pain in his head, and shifted in his chair, rolling a few inches to the side to dial his assistant.
“Yes, sir?” Carla’s voice rang through the other line, as chipper as it always was, though Curtis winced at the sound.
“Do we have any Advil or something? I’ve got a killer headache.”
“Err… I don’t think so, maybe in the kitchen? I can check━”
“It’s fine,” Curtis already began to rise from his seat, “I need to stretch my legs, anyway. Thanks,” He waved off her assurances, and then ended the call, rolling his shoulders as he walked to the floor to ceiling windows lining one wall of his office. Eyes narrowed━as if he could spy what Adam was up to from here━Curtis stared out at the vast cityscape, frowning lightly. He took a moment to breathe and, when his headache didn’t magically disappear, he started for the kitchen.
It wasn’t anywhere near lunch time, so the space would (thankfully) be empty, just like most of the corridors on his route. Curtis rifled through the cabinets and found nothing, earning another heavy sigh. He went to the only other place he could think of, the small, supply cabinet, which resembled a walk-in closet. Tiny, but still a room of its own.
When Curtis pulled open the door, however, it wasn’t as empty as he’d expected. There was another person━a young girl━holding some atrocious object that let out beeps that seemed to pierce through the air and into his skull. “What’re you doing?” Curtis asked, brows furrowing. “... Looking for a bug in the supply closet?” He joked softly, though he was sure their competitors wouldn’t go that far… would they?

“Testing. One, two, one two.” Eden hit the stop button before playing the tape back to herself. Her voice echoed through her car. “Hey guys. I’m currently parked outside of…” She paused. It probably wasn’t wise to announce her workplace to her podcast, “I’ll explain later.” Maybe. She clicked the off button on her record before throwing it in the dash of her car. Eden climbed out the car, gathering her suppliers from the trunk, shoving everything in her rucksack. When she started at Hawthorne Electronic she had zero interest in dragging her podcast into her professional life, until she overheard some of the other receptionists claiming the building was haunted. Things going missing, doors slamming shut, cupboards swinging open. Classic sign of a haunted building. Eden nearly broke her ankle jumping out of her chair to join in on their lunchtime chat, prying all the information from the ladies. The job interview for a receptionist was advertised in the local newspaper. It wasn’t exactly her dream job, but the company her dad worked for wrote her a glowing reference after she did a brief internship with them after school. Her dad was desperate for her to join the company alongside Eric, but Eden had other plans which involved ghosts and witches. Her parents couldn’t accept the fact that there was money to be made in the world of technology. How could she make a living out of speaking into a microphone? Easy, considering she could talk to a brick wall. Sometimes she’d recoil after realising she had been talking throughout most of the episode and Billy had uttered about three words. She couldn’t imagine the podcast working with anyone else but him. Eden hadn’t told Billy she had planned on bringing her equipment into work, knowing he would give her a disappointing look, telling her it wasn’t worth risking her job for. She wasn’t doing anything wrong though. There was nowhere in her terms of employment that said she couldn’t look for ghosts in the building, so all was good. Eden started on the top floor, slowly making her way down, weaving in and out of empty rooms, occasionally passing someone and flashing them an over friendly grin as she hid her little gadget. Most of the rooms she got were all clear, until she reached the fourth floor. The dial started ticking upwards as soon as she got out of the elevator. Excitement surged through her body as she slowly walked down the corridor, focusing on the device. She came to an abrupt halt as the dial shot up further near a room. She pushed the door open, but there wasn’t a lot inside the room bar a few cabinets but there was a ghost lurking inside, according to her gadget. Eden let out a gasp as the door flew open and a male was standing there. She exhaled harshly, bringing her hand up to her chest. “You scared the life out of me.” She glanced down at her device, which was beeping continuously. She flicked the switch and it fell quiet. “Nah. It's a device which like detects ghosts and stuff… paranormal activity y’know.” She held it out for him to inspect. “People reckon this building is haunted and according to this thing it is.” Although she wasn’t sure what type of ghost would want to linger in a boring corporate building. “Oh I’m Eden by the way. I work down on reception.” CURTIS HAWTHORNE

━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ EVEN MORE SURPRISING THAN FINDING SOME GIRL in their supply closet━she was Australian. Curtis found himself grinning at the familiarity (once the shock wore off), and then at the memories that drifted up because of it. Back when he’d only just started his company, got clean, but lost his brother. He gained Adam out of it, however, which… well, he was being a pain now, but that didn’t mean Curtis loved him any less. It was amusing, really━the timing and everything.
Even more curious, she was looking for ghosts. Ever since Adam came clean, well… Curtis had to wonder if he was more like his father than Curtis ever thought━if that curiosity was genetic. He only wished Adam would’ve ended up with Curtis’ dedication to realism. This girl, though… she was like a stringing together of all the pieces in Curtis’ life, and even if she might’ve been a mirror for him to stare into, she was still not his family. So he couldn’t rectify her behaviour, but he could judge her all he liked.
“Really?” He asked, reaching out to gently take the device from her, surprised she’d even let him touch it in the first place. After a second, though, Curtis realized how that may have sounded, and added, “As in, you really believe that?” Turning the EMF reader over in his hands, Curtis’ eyes slipped over it, a dry smile pulling up the edges of his lips. It reminded him of Jonas in a way that didn’t squeeze his heart so painfully anymore. He thought of the better memories, the ones in high school, when Jonas used to get so wrapped up in all of this.
Sighing heavily, Curtis handed it back. “EMF readers simply read electromagnetic currents, and in a large tech company, that can’t be hard to find.” He was still smiling, though it was more patronizing now, as if she were a child━which, well, age aside, this hobby made her one in Curtis’ eyes.
“Nice to meet you, Eden from Reception.” His smile warmed, “I’m Curtis Hawthorne.” Clearly, she hadn’t realized who he was, but he figured the last name would give her a clue━as long as she remembered she worked at Hawthorne Electric. “Can your little gadget pick up any sign of Advil in here? Or do you ladies keep any at reception?” It was a long way to go for a headache, but he was desperate now.
And then his mind (though handicapped by the searing pain) circled back to what she’d said━haunted? It wasn’t as if he believed any such things, but who was spreading these rumours? And, for a moment, he wondered━Did Adam have anything to do with them?
“Hold on, you said haunted? Is that your own theory or did you legitimately hear that somewhere?” His brows went up, “And can I ask where? So long as you’re willing to give up your secrets.” Playful now, Curtis clearly didn’t take this seriously. He only wanted to know who conjured these rumours and why they’d say such a thing.

There were hundreds of non-believers out there. Some people were too scared to accept there was something else out there but others were just uneducated about the supernatural. That’s usually where Eden slotted in, armed with years of research and stories. It was like a personal mission for her. Convince everyone that ghosts, witches, and all the rest actually existed. Once she had evidence she could run back down to the woman in reception and show them. Well, what she considered evidence probably didn’t satisfy some people. “Yeah! There’s gotta be other stuff out there… like ghosts.” Or maybe aliens. The whole Area 51 shit proved aliens existed though. Why else was it super secret? She carefully took the EMF reader back from the man, as he went on to explain how it works like Billy hadn’t said the same thing a million times before. “They’re usually only unreliable when there are power lines nearby… but still it doesn’t explain why the reading is so high in this closet. There’s nothing techy nearby.” He could stand there, trying to explain it away all day long, but Eden wouldn’t budge from her own theory. The place was haunted, just like her childhood home back in Australia. Her mom grew tired of trying to tell her daughter there were no ghosts lurking in the cupboards. Curtis Hawthrone… shit… Hawthorne. She lowered her EMF reader slightly, “Far out… you’re the Curtis Hawthrone… so sorry I didn’t realise I’ve never actually seen a piccy of you or anything.” The other woman could have at least pointed him out to her when he was walking through reception. He didn’t seem too pissed at the whole hiding in the closet and looking for ghosts thing. Out of all the people to find her it had to be him. “I’m pretty sure Sandra down at reception has some. That woman is like a walking pharmacy.” Her bag was constantly rattling with the number of prescription pills she carried. Eden was ready to shuffle past Curtis and rush off down the corridor as nothing had happened, but he asked more questions. For the first time in her life, she was considering backpedaling on the whole thing because her job could be on the line. Her parents would be furious if she lost her job because of her bizarre hobby and she’d never hear the end of it from Eric. “Just whispers amongst the staff… doors slamming shut on their own, cupboard doors swinging open, lights flickering on and off. That kind of thing… they reckon something weird is going on in here.” And she’d be inclined to agree. CURTIS HAWTHORNE

━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ CURTIS NARROWED HIS EYES FAINTLY, CONFUSED and intrigued by the girl. Her theory was… strange to say the least, but Curtis was willing to humour her for a moment. And that’s what he was doing, even if he was just asking questions. To Curtis, entertaining this in any way was humouring her. There was no way any of this was real, but she seemed to truly believe it.
“This whole place is ‘techy.’” Curtis countered, raising a brow. “Our servers sit on the opposite side of this wall.” He motioned to the one behind her, “Wouldn’t that have something to do with it?” He asked, again, as though talking to a child; waiting for her to come to her own conclusion. Curtis knew what people were like, though━especially when they had some crazy idea about how the world worked. Or, rather, the strange occurrences in it.
Thankfully, the name registered, and Eden seemed to remember where she was working… and for whom. And still, she spoke to him without any professional precursors, which he supposed he couldn’t hold against her. He didn’t take offence to it where his father might’ve; Curtis simply found it entertaining━like most of this girl’s attitude. “No problem,” He chuckled, “I suppose this isn’t part of your daily duties at reception, so… perhaps I should… thank you… for doing extra work.” Clearly, he was joking, but he hoped she could figure that out on her own. Having strange, fantastical ideas about what lurked in their world didn’t make her stupid━Curtis would’ve never described Jonas as such.
“Oh.” His brows went up again from her tales of Sandra, The Walking Pharmacy. “That’s somewhat concerning.” Curtis chuckled, though he supposed it was better to hear it now rather than later on when Sandra was caught dealing on the premises. It likely wasn’t that serious, but still something to keep an eye on.
Sandra’s reputation was a little more important than his business's supposed ‘haunting,’ but Curtis was curious about the rumours nonetheless. “Huh. Interesting. And nobody considered we might be testing new Smart Technologies on staff to work out the kinks?” He smirked. They weren’t, not on cupboard doors, but he’d have to look into the lights. Perhaps there was a wiring issue, though it was still embarrassing for a company that specialized in lighting to have that sort of problem. “Here, I’ll walk you back down to reception… if you’re all finished here.” And, in not so many words, what he meant was: you should be finished now. “...And you can tell me more about these reported hauntings.”
Grinning, Curtis stepped back to allow her to exit, and began walking toward the elevators. “So, have you seen any of this yourself, or is it all second-hand information that you thought you’d investigate yourself?” He asked, trying his best not to sound too judgemental. “Do you know if it’s been in specific areas or just all around?”

Maybe being psychic was another thing Eden should add to her resume because she could sense instantly when someone wasn’t on her side of the fence in regards to the supernatural. Billy was firmly on the side this man was on, but she could tell he was now balancing carefully on that fence. He would never admit it, but Eden had begun to wear him down and draw him over to her side. She twisted her head around, looking at the wall behind her. Okay, she didn’t realise the serves were behind that but that still didn’t explain all the other stuff that was going on. She turned back to the man, “Maybe… or maybe not.” She said with a shrug. It was only a working theory that the place was haunted, she wasn’t fully convinced. Her mom would have clipped her around the back of her head for speaking to her manager so casually. Well, not even her manager but her manager's manager's manager. Curtis sat at the very top of the hierarchy and Eden was at the very bottom, but that didn’t mean she had to treat him differently, right? Who knows. She wasn’t very good at these sorts of things, like meeting the CEO of the company you work for. Good job it was the King standing in front of her. “I fancied killing some time during my lunch hour.” Instead of gossiping with Wendy about whether or not Ben in HR was single or not, even though Eden couldn’t give a shit. Wendy kept hinting about setting Eden and Ben up on a date, clearly missing the obvious signs that Eden had zero interest in men. The sensible shoes were the first giveaway. Eden waved her hand in the air, dismissing Curtis’ concerns. “Nah she’s got all sorts of ailments. Probably best not to ask her about them though because you’ll be stood talking to her for a day.” She said with a wide grin on her face. She narrowed her eyes slightly, laughing lightly as she did so. “And are you?” She knew the answer to that question because they would have had some kind of email sent around about it. Plus those cupboards and drawers looked pretty ordinary, with no devices attached. “I’m all finished!” She shoved her reader back into her rucksack before swinging it on her back. Damn, it was a good job she wasn't recording for her podcast when Curtis walked in. Even if she was finished she was smart enough to realize it was a queue to head back downstairs. She followed Curtis back toward the elevator, “Bit of both really. So, when I was younger I was in the house alone and I could hear someone playing the piano upstairs so I ran upstairs to see who it was but no one was there but there were some fingerprints all over the keys. Turns out my great great great nanna died in that house way back and she loved playing the piano.” She pressed the button on the elevator to the ground floor, “Happens everywhere but apparently Mystic Falls is like some hot spot for supernatural activity. Lots of weird stuff going on like people going missing or found dead with all their blood drained… gotta admit that’s a little spooky.”CURTIS HAWTHORNE - wrap up with yours?

━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ AH, WELL, AT LEAST HE ONLY HAD TO WORRY about Sandra’s employee insurance and benefits rather than her handing out prescriptions on the premises. Curtis grinned, the expression only broadening when Eden questioned him about the testing of new technologies. Once again proving she might’ve had strange ideas about the world, but she definitely wasn’t stupid.
“Maybe. Maybe not. You know, we’re trying to integrate digital assistants into our lives seamlessly, so perhaps we have to work on the ‘nobody will notice’ part.” He smiled cheekily, giving her a playful wink as she packed up her “device” and they started towards the elevators.
Curtis listened quietly to her story, nodding slowly as he did. “Well… have you ever thought about other possible explanations? Somebody living in your attic?” He grinned to himself again, though he was sure she had an excuse for everything━one man poking holes in her stories was likely nothing to a girl who’d based all her hobbies around this one occurrence. Which was… fine, Curtis supposed. Everyone should have dreams. He was a realist, but they’d tried to nurture all these traits in Adam, who ended up in the clouds━a dreamer, just like Jonas. Perhaps some things were unavoidable. But sometimes, especially as Adam grew older, it felt like he had his little brother by his side again, and that was a feeling he’d never take for granted.
“Mhm, sure, it is spooky, but I’m sure plenty of animals do that sort of thing.” “Plenty” was a bit of a stretch. “But when you find some cold, hard evidence, bring it to me. Maybe you’ll convert me.” Curtis chuckled at the idea because he had no faith it would ever happen. Soon enough, the elevators dinged open, and he walked with Eden to reception.
“Well, I’ll take a look at those new Smart Technologies and make sure they’re working properly.” He smirked, almost as if this was their own little inside joke now. “Have a good rest of your day, Eden. It was… interesting to meet you━to say the least.” Smiling good-naturedly, Curtis nodded and then shifted to find Sandra, who could finally help cure his raging headache.
