Adam wasn’t the best liar, but you know, he managed. Though he knew that he was gonna have to come clean to his parents at one point about his school, but they didn't know about the existence of the supernatural, or that's what he thought anyway, and he had no way of knowing how to break the news to them. Hey, mom and dad, I can actually lift a car with my finger and I can also control electricity? Oh, and one more thing, I can actually control people's minds, isn't that so cool? Hah.
There was just no easy way to break it to them. He was going to have it do it abruptly at some point, like ripping off band-aid, right? Quick and easy... Except nothing about the truth was remotely easy. Though he can't deny that he was worried about his parents finding out on their own because he didn't want the way they looked at him to change. He wanted to be able to tell them so they'd know that he was still their son. He was still Adam.
You know, to give Adam the benefit of doubt, he'd tried to tell his dad one day. He'd just gotten home with a single goal in mind. Tell the truth and get it over with. But instead, he was given a look and was asked what he was doing out of his room when he was grounded. Oddly enough, Adam had absolutely no recollection of ever being told that he was grounded but that night, he could sense that an argument wouldn't go well, so he decided against it and went to his room, still confused as ever.
And so he decided to put it off.
For now, at least.
Adam still felt the urge to confess to his parents but each time, that cowardly side of him won and managed to convince him to keep his mouth shut for the sake of his parents and that morning, Adam lingered by the door of their home, looking like he wanted to say something but instead he just wished them a good day at work and told them that he was gonna hang out with Ria. He hated bringing up Ria's name in his badly crafted lie, but they knew that Adam didn't exactly have any other friends. As depressing as that sounds.
And so, under the pretense that he was hanging out with Ria, he went to the Salvatore school and unbeknownst to him, his dad wasn't exactly far behind. Adam knew that he had about thirty minutes to kill before his first class, so he decided to stand outside with the other students. They made small talks to pass the time before one of the students nudged him. "Yo, Adam, did you get into trouble with another kid? Cause I think their parent is looking at ya." Adam felt his smile fade a little bit as he tilted his head, confusion visible on his expression. He was rarely ever the type to cause any trouble, so the chances were very high unlikely, but he decided to indulge, expecting this to be some sort of prank but when he looked at the supposed 'parent', his eyes relaxed upon very, very familiar features that sent a wave of dread down his spine, his lips parting and closing multiple times, unable to find his own voice at first before he'd finally managed to speak up.
"... Dad?"

━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ CURTIS HATED THE LACK OF TRUST BETWEEN HIM and his son nowadays. Well, it was hard for both he and Liz to trust Adam, but he’d witnessed all of Adam’s recent behaviour firsthand. The rudeness, violence upon others, sneaking out when he was very clearly grounded. He was up to something during the day, too━there was no student by the name of Adam Hawthorne at Whitmore, and Adam had absolutely no excuse for that.
More than it was infuriating and upsetting, it was worrying. What the hell was Adam doing that he felt he couldn’t share with them? Was he in some sort of trouble? It didn’t make sense. Most of the time, Adam was the same sweet, kind and responsible kid, but, once in a while, someone else came out. Someone rude and sarcastic and desperately in need of love. Adam wasn’t that━they’d done so well with him, hadn’t they? He thought they had.
Recent behaviour proved otherwise.
So, Curtis would take this into his own hands. Adam was old enough to be his own person and have privacy and whatnot, but as long as he lived under his parents’ roof, he’d have to adhere to their rules.
He followed Adam.
It wasn’t a moment Curtis was terribly proud of, but he was at his wit’s end. He waited for a few minutes after Adam left, kissed Liz goodbye, and followed him. Adam claimed he was going out with Ria, but that was clearly a lie, too. He came to some school, which was definitely not Whitmore. The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. What the hell? Adam was a bright kid, sure, but a gifted school? And why wouldn’t he want to share that achievement with his parents?
Curtis maintained a healthy distance from Adam as he followed him through the grounds but, once Adam stopped by a group of other kids, Curtis shifted closer.
Finally, Adam turned and spotted him, and Curtis wore a stern expression, one full of restrained rage. He couldn’t fucking believe this━and why? Did he lie for fun now?
Marching over with a fury, he grabbed Adam’s arm and tugged him off to the side. His grip was stern and forceful, but light enough that he was sure he wouldn’t hurt Adam too much. He was looking for the upper hand here, respect, not bordering on child abuse. “What the hell is this place, Adam?” Curtis’ voice was level, his jaw set, but there was still that edge underneath the surface━a volcano ready to erupt. “I thought we were done with the lies. You said you were going to hang out with Ria, but I don’t see her around, do you?” It was rhetorical. His voice began to build the longer he went on, “This is ridiculous, Adam, and I’m so tired of your behaviour recently. Why would you hide this school from us? Why would you hide anything? Don’t you know that we love you no matter what?” His voice broke slightly at the end, hurt bleeding through more than anything. What had they done wrong?

Adam, at that moment, wondered what it was about him that attracted all sorts of bad luck. His dad wasn’t supposed to find out like this, he was supposed to be the one to tell him but it seemed like he had waited for too long — he was too late and it was that discovery that made him want to shrink in on himself and disappear from sight to avoid having such a difficult conversation with his dad. He could feel the presence of his friends fading away as they excused themselves from the heated conversation happening only a few feet away from where they were standing. Adam looked like he had just seen a ghost, his skin was pale and his eyes were as wide as saucers. “No, I can explain━ Adam pressed his lips into a thin line and paused when he noticed the way his dad’s voice was beginning to grow as he spoke. Adam looked down at the ground, far too ashamed to even meet his gaze as he gnawed helplessly on his bottom lip. The more his dad spoke, the harder it became for him to find his own voice, he was scrambling in his mind for ways to ease the pain that his dad was experiencing but he couldn’t say anything without second-guessing himself.
Adam flinched lightly at the hurt tone that hung onto his dad’s words. The way his voice broke slightly was enough to make him feel an immense amount of guilt washing over him. “I do!” Adam finally spoke, his eyes lifting slowly to settle on his dad. “I do know that, but this is…” Adam glanced over his shoulder back at the school before his eyes settled on his dad once again. “I shouldn’t have lied and I’m really, really sorry about that. I was waiting for the right time to talk to you and mom about this…” Adam wiped his unsurprisingly sweaty palms across the fabric of his jeans. "But I couldn't find the right time, especially when you seemed upset with me, but trust me, I wanted to talk to you about this."
“I didn’t lie about the school to be, uhm, edgy about things, and I didn’t do it for attention, either. I lied because of what the school stands for. Um. Maybe if you give me a second — third chance I can show you instead? I think it’d be best for you to see with your own eyes rather than to hear me, uh, talk about it.”

━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ EXPLAIN? WHAT THE HELL COULD ADAM SAY THAT WOULD possibly make any of this better? Would he just lie again? This wasn’t the kind of thing…
Actually, this was exactly the kind of thing Curtis used to do. Was it things? It would explain the erratic behaviour, the lying… Oh, God. This ballooned into something far greater, far scarier than Curtis thought it would be when he originally had the idea to follow Adam to school.
Just when Curtis’ voice began to crumble, Adam finally spoke, vehemently defending himself. Perhaps it was a normal thing to do, but it only made Curtis spiral further, knowing it was the exact thing he would’ve done in the same situation.
The rest of it, though? It sounded sane, like not complete bullshit, and Curtis prided himself on his ability to easily sniff it out. Never once would he have offered to show his parents what he was hiding, and so, once again, Curtis felt a little hopeful. He wouldn’t━couldn’t━give up on Adam just yet.
“Maybe you should’ve chosen one of the other dozens of times you were caught lying. What about when I went to Whitmore and found out you weren’t a student? Would that have been a good time?” Curtis puffed, shaking his head disapprovingly.
“You’ve had far more than two chances.” He grumbled, irritated that he was even considering giving Adam another one. But he still held out hope that this wasn’t what he thought it was, and that Adam had a great excuse for everything. It was wishful thinking━it had to be━but his soft spot was his family, and it was far too easy to lose them. If nothing else, he knew that.
Releasing a heavy sigh, Curtis’ shoulders sunk, surrendering to Adam’s requests. It was just a school, right? A school for the gifted. Maybe this would be the end of the secrets. “Fine.” He nodded once sharply. “Show me, then.” Maintaining Adam’s eye line for a moment, Curtis finally shifted and began walking towards the school, assuming Adam would remain at his side.

— when you dream ; do you dream of the stars? —
Adam pressed his lips into a thin line because he knew his dad was right. He should have said something then, so why didn't he? Why did he let his lie fester and grow until it reached this point? "It's just — I didn't want to make you even more upset." Adam finally spoke up after allowing a beat or two of silence to stretch between the two of them. "And it's not..." Adam sighed, his shoulders sagging in defeat. He almost felt angry at himself for not being able to find the correct words to describe what he was feeling right now. He rubbed his hands together nervously, his eyes shifting away from his dad for a moment before his shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug. "Very easy to explain without showing you and I didn't want to, um—" Adam gnawed on his inner cheek for a moment. The correct way to describe it would be him not wanting to scare him off by showing him that he wasn't normal. It was during moments like these that Adam truly wished that nothing about him was special. He found himself wishing that he was just like any other person but for some reason, he was gifted with these abilities that have given him a hard time for quite some time now. He didn't want to risk upsetting his dad or disappointing him even more, so he finally decided to be honest, to finally say what he wanted to say without second-guessing himself. "Scare you, I guess."
Adam dipped his head down, unable to meet his dad's eyes as if the guilt of his own actions kept him from doing so and that was exactly it. He couldn't meet his dad's eyes because he was absolutely right. He'd been given more than two chances already and he still kept being dishonest with his dad. "I know. I'm really, really sorry, dad. I know I have no right to ask for another chance. I promise you that I won't keep anything from you again if you give me just this one small chance." Adam finally lifted his head to look at his dad, his eyes were pleading, hoping that he'd at least be given this one last chance to show his dad everything. He'd let that lie stretch between the two of them for way, way longer than necessary. If he's not honest with his dad, then who else? He was so fed up with keeping this secret for him, too. He wanted to drop that weight off his shoulders and be transparent for once.
Adam's expression brightened and he released a quiet sigh of relief, his shoulders sagging as the tension in them evaporated just like that and it was all thanks to his dad giving him the chance to show him everything. "Thank you. You won't regret this, I promise." He stayed by his dad's side as he began making his way closer to the school.
As they neared the school, the door was open as always, allowing the students to go in and out without a problem. He stepped inside of the school before he came to an abrupt stop. "Um," Adam began, his eyes searching for his dad's. "Just one more thing," Adam held up his pointer thing to show that he just had one more thing to talk to his dad about before he could show him anything. "What happens here at the school might, uh, seem impossible, so if you ever feel overwhelmed... Let me know and we can leave, okay?"

━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ CURTIS COULDN’T COUNT ON BOTH HANDS HOW MANY TIMES he’d asked his parents for second, third, and “please, just one last” chances. Not only his parents, but everyone within a ten-mile radius of his constant fuck-ups.
He’d never wanted this for Adam. Curtis tried so hard to protect him, but nothing seemed to stop this sort of thing from happening. It was in their DNA, and while sometimes Adam reminded him so much of Jonas, he was still Curtis’ son.
But what could be so hard to explain? A dr-g addiction. And would that scare Curtis? Yes, absolutely━it would terrify him. He couldn’t imagine a worse gift he could’ve passed onto his son, but at least Curtis knew how to get him out of it. He had experience with this, and they would survive it together.
He didn’t know what any of that had to do with this school, though. Was it a front for a rehab centre?
Whatever it was, they’d get through it. Curtis would give him another chance, maybe a hundred more if needed. He had to. Adam was his son; he wasn’t going to leave the boy behind.
As far as not regretting it, though? That he didn’t fully believe.
They were almost through the doors when Adam stopped them. Curtis puffed out an exasperated breath and turned, raising his brows at the boy. “Impossible?” Curtis scoffed━this was one of those times he really reminded Curtis of his little brother.
“Sure. Fine,” Curtis nodded almost dismissively, and turned to walk into the school again, not willing to be scared off by Adam’s “warnings.”
It looked like a regular school inside. There were lockers, and they passed by classrooms━all of it was very normal. Only, Curtis couldn’t figure out why this was such a big secret. “What’s so impossible about this place?” He puffed. This was like all those “haunted” places Jonas used to talk about━nothing but a dilapidated structure with pests and creaky floorboards. But this place was pristine.
He peered into a classroom as they walked by, seeing a big show of… something science-y. Kids raising their hands slowly, creating bursts of light and sparkles in the air. It settled in front of their faces and dissipated, disappearing into thin air. “What’s this?” Curtis asked quietly so only Adam would hear him, frowning. “Some sort of… chemistry class? AV Club?” The second guess was a dry joke. It had to be a trick of some sort━the light or his eyes. It wasn’t anything impossible, as Adam had claimed.
