A Foolproof Plan with Iain McKeegan To say that his reappearance had set her off was an understatement. Rose had her perfect little plan --- visit this backwater town, ensure that she hadn't sired a nitwit and then move on. The fact that she was now stuck here was entirely his fault. Iain would be proud of that and therefore she was determined not to let him in on that fact (he would call her inability to get the hell out of there for fear that he would follow growth; a step in the right direction).
So she needed a new plan.
The stupid auction the town was throwing gave her an idea (it probably was a ridiculous one but that was her frame of mind at the moment). She signed up without blinking, well aware that it gave them the right to parade her around like cattle and sell her off to the highest bidder. A ridiculous farce that everyone seemed excited about. She was too --- but for very different reasons.
Heaven help the person that bought her.
She had grand plans for him or her --- they all ended with her eating the so called winner. Their prize for thinking that this kind of thing was okay. They would be placed where Iain could see, of course. A little present, a reminder of sorts, that she was who she was and she wouldn't changed for no one.
She got herself dressed up for the occasion, wanting to appear like the perfect little gift to whoever wanted to fork over the money. When she arrived, she gave everyone sweet smiles and when her name was called, Rose stepped onto the stage.
"Come on," she purred. "I don't bite."
Yet.

The Founders Day Party was advertised almost everywhere in town so it was impossible to get away from the posters. It wasn’t something Iain would have voluntarily taken himself to but he knew it was a place that would draw Rose in, if she was still lurking in town. A party full of intoxicated humans? It was like Disneyland for a vampire. He dug the only suit he had out of his suitcase and headed to the party. He noticed on the poster something about an auction being held at some point during the day, but there was no way he would have been jotting his name down for it, but he glanced at the sheet quickly as he wandered by and noticed there were quite a lot of people who had put their names forward. He tore his gaze away from the paper before scanning the sea of faces for Rose. Nothing. In classic Rose style perhaps she had packed her bags and jolted out of Mystic Falls as soon after she found out Iain was around. Throwing all her belongings in her bag and running from him once again or she’d ferociously stand her ground, telling him he needed to leave Mystic Falls. To leave her alone to live a life she apparently was meant to lead. At least there was free champagne on offer. He found it uncomfortable to be in the town surrounded by complete strangers. The only person he knew was the one person who didn’t want to see him. Back in Scotland, he knew everyone within a ten-mile radius and the only strangers were the tourists that travelled through. The people he told Rose she wasn’t allowed to attack. He stood towards the back of the room, watching people step up to the stage and others yell out various figures. At least it was entertaining until Rose stepped up. A faint smile on his face when she announced to the room that she didn’t bite. Ironic. As expected there were a few men in the crowd throwing up their cards, completely unaware that they were signing their death certificates by doing so. He knew Rose was planning on draining whoever won. Part of him wanted to turn around and leave, after all he didn’t particularly care about the locals in this town. They weren’t in Scotland any more, he couldn’t tell Rose what to do. Iain quickly grabbed one of the auction cards off the booth near the door. By now the highest bidder was over a hundred dollars and with each figure announced the number of bidders was dying down. “Three hundred dollars.” His card shot up in the air, as he moved through the people so Rose could see him. He turned his attention to the man who’d just lost his title as the highest bidder. The man shot him a glare, his grip tightening on the card. Seconds later the stranger outbid Iain by seventy dollars. “Five hundred dollars.” It was all in the name of charity, right? The stranger backed down and the gavel slammed down. Iain was the successful winner. ROSE DAVENPORT

A Foolproof Plan with Iain McKeegan There was a measure of glee that entered her system knowing these men were paying for their own deaths. The smile on her face was genuine but it was born of something that would make most question her morality. The answer was simple: she didn't have any. She gave that up the moment she killed her father and she wasn't taking it back any time soon.
(it was too loaded of a prospect)
The current high bidder wasn't much to look at but she was willing to bet that he was tasty. She moved across the stage, doing her best to look like the innocent angel many assumed she was. However, her smile faltered when she heard a familiar voice filter through the crowd. He wouldn't. Rose's mouth pressed into a thin line as Iain finally stepped into full view and took control of the situation. She could barely contain her annoyance, knowing full well that voicing her displeasure in a room full of people might cost her an easy meal down the road.
However, the moment he was declared the winner, she dropped the fun loving persona and practically stomped off the stage. She moved toward him so she was standing toe to toe. Her head tipped back and she tried her best to level him with a glare (he was made of more than that but it felt good to get some of her frustration out). "I am worth more than that and you know it," she spat, her voice laced with all the mixed notions that he tended to set off in her head. He was dangerous to her in so many ways.
But today, she didn't want to avoid him.
Today, she wanted to punish him for getting in the way of her fun. Talking a deep breath, she pushed past him, making sure to use her shoulder to brush his side. She took a few more steps and then threw him a look. "Are you coming?" she asked. "I figure you would want to claim your prize and all that."

It was somewhat satisfying seeing the smile fall from Rose’s face when she realised Iain was standing in the crowd, prepared to put forward a bid for her. He could just about hear the other man complaining to his friends that he’d lost the auction, but Iain had just saved that man’s life. Within a few hours, his lifeless body would have been discarded somewhere in town, carelessly and recklessly. He watched as she strutted down from the stage, heading straight towards with a stony look on her face. His eyes locked on her cold empty blue eyes. There was something brewing up behind them though. He’d seen flashes of emotion on her face over the years. Her features softening slightly as the true version of her was trying to push through, but there was no evidence of that right now. “Aye. Maybe a few dollars more.” He quipped with a small smile on his face. It was dangerous to prod an angry bear, but he knew Rose would keep her claws in. For now. She pushed past him but didn’t storm off the way he expected her to, instead she prepared to allow him to claim his prize and spend the day with her. It was dangerous territory for both. “Let’s go.” He moved past her, gesturing at her to follow him outside towards his rented car. “Be canny wi' this motor. I gotta return it back in one piece.” No bloodshed on the seats basically. He held the passenger door open for her, “We're going on a short road trip… see where th’ road takes us.” He was keeping his plan tight to his chest, for now, knowing Rose would refuse to go anywhere with him if she knew the truth. The drive was short enough that Rose didn’t have to endure too much of Iain’s small talk. Soon the sign came into view. Chesapeake, Virginia. He slowed down once they entered Chesapeake, pulling over at the side of the road. The doors were unlocked. Rose was free to leave at any point and she could run away from everything, again. He turned to Rose, “Ye'v seen mah hometown so I thought ye could gimme a tour of yers.” If she was willing to or maybe she was worried those pesky emotions would show. ROSE DAVENPORT

A Foolproof Plan with Iain McKeegan Rose was planning a great many ways to get back at him. Most involved bloodshed but not in the way he thought. He might have planted a seed in her head when he walked back into her life. He was trying to pull her up to his level and now she felt like she should be doing the same in return. Only she would be dragging him down. Showing him how the other half lived.
(or at least that was the plan)
She left behind the crowd (and her lunch), raising an eyebrow at the car. "You came prepared, huh? Couldn't get me out of that head of yours. I'm touched," she purred as she let him open the door for her. She wouldn't mind getting out of Mystic Falls for an afternoon. She could do her worst no matter what the surroundings. She leaned happily against the window, watching their surroundings and listening to him prattle. She would never admit it but she liked the sound of his voice. It brought forth memories --- ones she actually liked to think on. She gave him enough to keep the conversation going, refusing to let him accuse her of being sullen.
That was until she realized where they were going.
She cursed herself for not seeing it before the sign made it all obvious. She whipped her head around to look at him. "You're not funny," she told him quietly. There was ice in her voice and her first instinct was to reach for the door. She could jump. She would not enjoy the landing but she was a big girl after all. She would heal just nicely.
But he had saw that coming.
When the car came to complete stop, she sat there, staring at the landscape that was both familiar and foreign at the same time. If she ran now, she would be giving herself away. So instead she swallowed back the conflict building inside of her, and did her best to be flippant. "Sure, I can give the full tour. Make sure you get your money's worth. We could be doing things that are a lot more fun but I recognize that you have a stick up your ass instead." She shrugged her shoulders. "Drive on."

The truth was Rose had been prevalent in his mind since she left Scotland. There wasn’t a single day that passed since then when he didn’t think of her, wondering where she had ended up and mostly importantly if she was okay. He hoped that she had worked through her troubles, accepted her emotions, and was now happy, but those hopes were dashed when he found her. Nothing had changed with her. She was still batting away those emotions, but it was a relief to see she was alive. Whatever came of the day at least Iain had saved some random stranger from being killed by Rose. That was something. To his surprise, Rose was actually engaging in conversation with him rather than leaving him to fill the silence with the sound of his own voice. It was almost as if they were back in Scotland, cruising along the country roads in his car, talking about anything that came to mind. Except everything was on the opposite side in America, which Iain couldn’t get his around. He hated it. It took him a few days to get used to sitting on the other side of the car and even longer to remember which way to look when coming out of a junction. He still kept forgetting about the gear stick though, his hands twitching to grab it and slot it into fourth gear once they hit the freeway. Rose should have been counting herself lucky that she wasn’t sitting alongside him the first time drove the hire vehicle after nearly sending himself through the windshield when hitting the brake thinking it was the clutch. This was a test for Rose though. If she ran she was proving to Iain that she was scared of heading back into her hometown, but she didn’t break. “Ah think checking oot yer hometown could be fun.” Thought-provoking for Rose, hopefully. Iain had listened to the pieces of information she had provided over the time they were together. In the end, he managed to build up a picture of Rose’s past, which was then confirmed when she shared the truth about her dad. As much as he wanted to drag her back to her childhood home to face the past, he decided against it. Soon enough he pulled into the center and parked the car. “When was th’ last time ye were ‘ere? I'm assuming tis changed a lot in fifty years?” He dug around in his coat pocket for change for the meter, digging out a few coins before inspecting each one, “Ah think that's five dollars, aye?” He held his hand out to Rose. A Foolproof Plan with Iain McKeegan She no longer wanted to look out the window. She had used the scenery as an excuse to avoid looking at him and now she was forced to do the opposite. She shifted her body, her face tilted towards him now, his eyes tracing along his jawline, down his body and back up again. It was easier, she realized. Looking at him was easier than finding out if her surroundings would prove to be a ticking time bomb.
As it was, there was something in her beginning to crawl its way towards the surface. It was slow moving and she batted back it, wanting it to go dormant once more. She wondered if she could still get out. She was backed to jumping now that he was speeding down the road once more. She almost didn't care what it said to him, at least she would have given herself a reprieve. Maybe even sent the message that she would rather break a few bones than spend time with him.
(physical pain she could deal with)
By ignoring the world outside the car she had missed just how far into the belly of the beast they had gone. When he put the car into park, she furrowed her brows. She couldn't just stare at him forever (even though part of her wanted to). Instead she took a deep breath and let her eyes wander. For a moment she was lost to the task, noting the differences, noting the similarities. "More the same than different," she concluded quietly, more to herself than him. He would hear her of course. Like her, he was gifted with those keen senses that made comments she would rather keep to herself his as well. She turned her head back to him. "Most likely because they can't be bothered to update this place. They think it's quaint. Cute. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. This is why becoming a vampire was more a blessing than a curse if you think about it. It gave me the ability to travel, to leave this place behind. I would have been stuck here no doubt." Paraded around by parents as their perfect daughter, introduced to some country club prince in hopes that she would marry him and pump out the next generation of Davenports. Her eyes dropped to his hand and then without confirming what he had, she snatched the coins from the palm.
The door was thrown open and she filled the meter. "What do you want to see first? My school? A few blocks that way. My favorite store --- no doubt that has changed because that brand doesn't even exist anymore. I bet it is a Starbucks now." She scoffed low in her throat as she turned in the parking lot. "Or do we want to head to the woods where that jackass left me to die with his blood in his system? You paid for this time after all, Iain. I am at your mercy."

He’d never stepped foot in America before so it was impossible for him to build up a mental image of where Rose grew up. Instead, he had to rely on Google search and the pictures didn’t do the place justice. It was busier than his village back in Scotland, leaving Iain wondering why the hell Rose chose to settle in Scotland with him for so long. He daggled the promise of a daylight ring in front of her for a while, but surely boredom would have prevailed before then? She didn’t need the daylight ring considering how long she’d gone without one before meeting him. Maybe he was just telling himself that rather than accepting the idea that she never wanted to be there in the first place and only stuck around to get what she needed from Iain before disappearing. Had he been bested by a vampire half his age? Too drawn in by her good looks to see her true intentions. If that was true then he had wasted his time traveling across the globe to find Rose. She was yet to ditch him though. “Aye. There are some advantages o’ bein’ a vampire.” He’d spent centuries swinging between theories as to whether it was a blessing or a curse to become a vampire. For now, he found himself tipping toward the idea it was a blessing, but no doubt that would change in a century or two. Tragedy usually dragged him back to the belief it was a curse. “Maybe ah should take a leaf oot of yer book ‘n’ travel more.” It was only leaf he would be taking though, but she had a point. Being immortal gave them the chance to travel the world, but Iain had barely left Scotland. He watched as she snatched the coins from his hand before slotting them in the meter. She’d given him an option. Take her to a place that would stir good memories or a place that would stir bad ones. He was harsh on her when they first met, but over time she wore him down and he started to become soft with her. He moved away from the car, stepping closer to Rose. “Let's head tae the woods, where that ‘jackass’ left ye.” He tried his best to mirror Rose’s American accent when he said the word jackass but failed with the Scottish accent forcing its way through. He hadn’t dragged Rose out to the battlefield where he was killed, yet he was about to see where she took her final breath as a human in the hopes it would trigger something inside her. A Foolproof Plan with Iain McKeegan "Power over those who wronged you? Definitely an advantage." She said it in hopes of turning the screws in on him. She doubted that he ever saw it that way. Revenge was not something that he embraced, at least not in the version she knew of him. She suddenly found herself curious about the Iain before her. The man who had woken up a vampire long before she was even born. He had hinted at his past, told her stories but she was just realizing that she didn't have a proper narrative for him.
She had never asked.
There was some power in knowing that he hadn't bent her that much that she had cared to learn about his past in depth but at the same time she felt robbed of the knowledge. She wanted it all. She wanted him to tell her how he came to be the man he was now --- the one who would follow her all the way to Mystic Falls and then try his best to turn her into something that she didn't want to be.
(couldn't be, she couldn't be that woman --- she would break into pieces)
"I've travelled." Ran, more like she ran. Always moving away from her past except now she was smack in the middle of it. She really wished she could say she never planned this but she had a feeling that the moment she had left Virginia behind, she was already on her way back. She just had taken the long way around. "And after this moment, or whatever you want to call it is done, I am going to travel some more. Solo." She felt the need to stress that even though she knew damn well if he wanted to follow her, he would. Just like he had now.
She honestly hadn't expected him to chose the more gruesome option. For a moment, she eyed him, wondering what he was thinking and then she was storming off, her jaw set tightly. She was determined to do this and get it over with. Prove to him that she was staying just as she was.
Although there was similarities in the town, the differences had the potential to throw her off. They didn't though --- it was like she was a moth and the place of her death was a flame. She wandered with a purpose, leading him away from the heart of the town towards the water, towards the outskirts. She could picture it in her mind perfectly. She practically knew ever branch.
Only when she got there, it was not as remembered.
It was concrete now. A parking lot. Gone was the wild trees, the bushes, the brown earth that she had lay on before she was snapped back to life a changed woman. She furrowed her brows as she stepped onto the hot concrete. In her mind, she had expected something. A shrine to the fact that she had died on this land. She had felt pain here, struggled to hold on to what was rightfully hers and they had turned it to a place to park their cars?
She didn't realize it but she was breathing heavily, her chest heaving as she struggled to comprehend what they were standing on. "They turned it into a fucking parking lot? I died here and people park their crappy cars over it?" Her voice was louder than she meant it to be. Her fingers curled into her hands and she shook her head. "This isn't right. This is wrong. This is cruel..."

Iain didn’t bite back at her comment. He couldn’t without sounding like a hypocrite. He’d taken revenge on those who killed his wife and it didn’t fill any kind of hole that was left behind by her death, but Rose didn’t know that. He’d spent years pressing her to share her story with him, but at the same time he held back some truth about himself. If he did he risked coming across as some old vampire who claims to empathise with everyone just because they’re old. It wasn’t as if Rose ever asked for his story though. Maybe if she did he would show his cards, but for now the spotlight was on her. He knew he couldn’t continue following her on her travels without risking being labelled a stalker, but Iain had no idea how he was going to cut ties with someone who had been in his life for a decade. It wasn’t just a fleeting interaction between the pair. He’d welcomed her in his home and she was now a person he cared for, deeply. “If that's what you want then fair enough... but ah will always be a phonecall awa' if you need someone.” If that humanity switch jammed itself towards the on button and she felt overwhelmed. Iain followed Rose through the streets, then out to the woods, in silence. He didn’t want to distract any feelings that might be brewing by talking nonsense in the background. Commenting on stores, he walked past or the houses, some of which were spectacular. He’d already chewed her ear off in the car on the drive there. They came to a halt and Iain observed their surroundings. It wasn’t what he was expecting, but it appeared Rose wasn’t expecting it either as she started to take deeper breaths. Was emotion creeping in? The most obvious thing to do was to ask her how she was feeling, but he didn’t want to draw her attention to those emotions, forcing her to shut down again. He could comfort her or he could try and stir anger. “What did ye think ye were going tae find'? A plaque wi' yer name on it? After a few decades, folk forget aboot ye.” After a while there would be no one left behind to mourn your death either and you’d be truly forgotten. He walked past Rose, stopping just in front of her before looking down and dragging his left foot over the concrete, “It’s nae wrong or cruel... It’s just life.” People barely knew anything about the battle which he died in, which sometimes made him feel like his death was pointless. ROSE DAVENPORT

A Foolproof Plan with Iain McKeegan It annoyed her how calm he could remain in the fact of her taunts. She would like to say that he was like her, that somewhere along the way he had turned it all off but she knew better. He felt everything, he was just good at regulating it. He understood how to deal with it all --- or at least he did a damn good job of pretending that he did. She wanted to hate him for it but she knew that she could never hate him. At least not the way she wanted to. It would involve letting it all come rushing in and if she did, she doubted that hate would be the first emotion she latched onto when it came to him.
So, knowing that she couldn't get the rise out of him, Rose walked in silence until she stood on the place of her death. Without even realizing it, she had fallen into a trap, one that he had expertly woven around her. She couldn't see that. She couldn't see the way he was gently goading her towards his goal. All she could see was concrete. Hard rock over the place where she had lain, trying desperately to hold onto life. She still remembered the face of the man who had done this her. She would never forget it. She could describe it down to the color of the flecks in his eyes. This place should be a reflection of her pain, her loss. Instead it was mundane.
Because Iain was right. They had moved on. They had forgotten. They had never really mourned her in the first place.
She whipped around to face him, her face screwed up in a mask of pure fury. "It's just life?! What kind of asinine remark is that? He took my life. He never gave me a choice. He hurt me and there is no scar here. There is nothing here to show for everything I went through." Logically, she knew there wouldn't be. She didn't know what she expected to see but she couldn't help herself. She was tumbling over an edge without even truly considering what was at the bottom waiting for her. She just let herself go, much like she had the day she turned. She had stumbled home with no understanding of what she was. She had killed her father because the thirst was too much for her to resist. And then she just...turned it off without even knowing what she was doing.
This moment was the mirror image of that.
She was hit with it all. A floodgate opening. The physical signs were there. Her chest heaved with the pressure of it all. Her eyes immediately filled with tears. She thought she was going to fall to her knees, a blind panic threatening her. She tried to control it all at once. She wanted to push it back into the box she had locked it in. But it was too late.
She had no way to control it anymore.
Rose's eyes were wild when she looked to him. "What did you do?!"

He felt he was running out of options with Rose, until now. She had presented him with the perfect opportunity to push at those emotions. A chance to remind of the person she was before she died, before she killed her dad. It was like walking on eggshells though, each move would have to be carefully chosen. He knew if someone led him to the place he died and told him to look at the last place he took his final breath as a human it would trigger something. Painful memories would flood through. His mom, his dad, Sabrina. She’d been led down a blind path too, not realising when she died that wouldn’t be the end. She would wake up as something different. A person who needed human blood to survive. “No one knows ye died here… they think ye lived oot yer human days happy ‘n’ content… even yer family didn’t know ye died.” He was carefully treading around the subject of her dad. Sabrina knew what had happened to Iain, alibert she never expected him to kill her but he dealt with it instead of shutting it out. He’d tried to tell Rose countless times before that he understood why she did it but she had to deal with the death of her dad one day. Maybe today was the day. Flickers of emotions were brewing in Rose until she started to crack. Her eyes filled with tears. He’d never seen her cry before and even though it was necessary it still hurt him. He was itching to step forward and throw his arms around her, telling her everything was okay but he kept his distance. “A'm sorry Rose... But it's aboot time ye turn it back on.” His stomach started to churn as he was second guessing what he’d done. Had he done the right thing? There was a chance she’d hate him for this, but it was a risk he was willing to take if it meant helping her. “Everything is gonna be okay. Ah promise... Ah will be 'ere for ye every step.” He wasn’t going to abandon her like that asshole who left her to die. He’d been there for her for the past ten years and he was willing to be there for her until the end of time. ROSE DAVENPORT - wanna wrap up with yours?

A Foolproof Plan with Iain McKeegan Considering she had turned off her emotions without even realizing what she was doing, she didn't know what to expect when they came back on. It seemed to her that her body and mind were trying to make up for lost time, slamming her with the entire range of emotion all at once. It was too much. She didn't know which one to grab onto properly. She just knew that she couldn't function like this.
Without even thinking, she reached out to grab Iain's arm, her fingers twisting around it and holding on as if for dear life. Her eyes found his, heard his voice through the chaos and she focused on that. Focused on the sound as if it could ground her. He was apologizing. For what? Why? He had done nothing wrong. She wanted to be mad at him for backing her into this corner and forcing this on her but that was the one emotion she couldn't seem to bring to the forefront. Maybe she had been heading for this moment for a long time and he was just there to give her that final shove. Or maybe he had simply finished what he started in Scotland. Either way, she couldn't be angry with him.
"I need to get out of here," she finally said, her voice strained. She was standing where she had lost her life. It might be meaningless to the people who drove over it day in and day out but it meant something to her. This was the moment in her life that sent her on a path that she was just beginning to comprehend. To her, it was one of the most defining things in her life and to see it treated like it was pained her more than she wanted to admit. She didn't want to linger here and let that hurt soak in. She had enough emotional damage to work her way through.
Rose refused to let up her grip on Iain. "Please just take me out of here. Anywhere. I will go anywhere as long as it is not here." Her eyes were still filled with tears and she was barely holding it all in.
Thankfully, he meant what he said.
Thankfully, they didn't linger.
