where we stand with Cassie Luanna
It had taken her longer than the rest to get back on her feet. In truth, she still wasn't okay and she wouldn't be okay for a while. Not while the threat of what was to come loomed over her like a dark cloud. On one hand, Monique felt the burden of it immensely. It weighed her down and at times she wondered if she could keep going. But on the other hand, they had chosen her. The ancestors had saw fit to single her out among the witches that went the Harvest. That had to mean something.
She would do what she could to ensure their vision was brought forward.
Before she could accomplish such a task, Monique found herself standing outside of Reid's Pawn Shop. It was not the kind of place she would have gone if she hadn't had reason to. She tilted her head, her powers moving slowly from her to get a feel for the place. She couldn't help but watch herself. After all, she had been betrayed by those she had trusted most and if they could do it, anyone could. Although she couldn't be one hundred percent certain, she felt comfortable enough to actually enter the building.
(besides, let them try something; Monique was itching to prove herself once more)
She wrinkled her nose at her surroundings. This was not a place for a Harvest witch, yet there was one perched behind the counter. She watched her through the clutter for a moment and then decided that playing hide and seek was below her.
"Cassie," she began as she finally pushed forward, strolling towards her friend with purpose. "It's good to see you. In the flesh. No longer cooped up like sardines in the head of someone who should have known better."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ AFTER MANDY WAS TAKEN, CASSIE TRIED HER BEST TO BE a good person. Well, she hoped she was one anyway, but still. She begged for Linc’s forgiveness. She offered any and all help to Nicky and his brother. She even tried to keep the motel room clean━even if that should’ve been a split job between her, Abby and Monique. Whatever. They probably should’ve found somewhere else instead of continuing to squat there, but now she was making a bit of money, so maybe they could save up for something better.
Or more permanent… because she wanted to stay. Not for Davina━not only for Davina━but because of the little life she’d built here.
Anyway, Nicky wasn’t around much anymore, but he said it was important to keep a good public appearance. It wasn’t like Cassie went to school, so she could take all the extra shifts. It meant more money and working there was easy; most of the time, the store was pretty dead, and otherwise she’d get to work on her people skills or magicking skills.
The little entrance bell went off, forcing Cassie’s blue eyes up from her magazine, trained across the store until… Monique. Oh, God, she never visited Cassie at work━what did she want? Cassie had tried to keep this ‘position’ on the down-low, too, ‘cause she kinda figured Monique would flip shit if she thought Cassie wasn’t focusing on the ancestors’ wishes a hundred percent of the time. Like, she wasn’t sure, but still. Maybe there was some inner guilt goin’ on.
Straightening up from behind the counter, Cassie’s shoulders stiffened, a tight smile pulling up her red-lipsticked lips.
“Yeah, no shit,” Cassie snorted. It’d been forever since they were brought back, but not a day went by where she wasn’t incredibly thankful that they were here now. Outside of Davina’s head, and their own people… though, the small motel room didn’t often feel much different than another sardine can.
“Okay, so I think we’re gonna be running low on food soon. And, I mean, I know we’ve been mostly living off of granola bars and juice boxes, but now that I’m working, I was thinking we could start buying real food. Like cereal.” She grinned, “Are… you gonna get a job, too? Or…?” The smile fell flat. No matter how much progress she’d made, Monique still scared the shit out of her; she made Cassie start to regress into her pre-Harvest Ritual self, which was totally shitty and annoying.

where we stand with Cassie Luanna
She told herself that Cassie was her sister in so many ways. They had both been chosen for the Harvest, went through the training, been betrayed in the worst possible way and then forced to live a half life thanks to Davina. That was a hell of a lot for any one person to go through --- and it should bond them for life.
But Monique couldn't help but get the feeling that Cassie wanted something very different than her.
"A job?" Monique repeated. She had once worked in The Jardin Gris for a summer, stocking shelves and selling trinkets to tourists who didn't understand the truth to what they were buying (they just wanted to say they were in a real magic shop). "I have more important things to do but if you're worried about money, I'll see to it that there is some." It was funny how little she cared for things like what she put in her body. She figured she was fueled solely by the gifts given to her by the ancestors at this point.
Speaking of...
Monique moved further into the shop, her finger tracing along a shelf. She pulled it back when she realized it was dusty and then curled up her nose. She sighed a little. There was trauma here, she could feel it. "Have they found the witch that was taken from here yet?" She hoped so. Anyone who harmed a witch deserved whatever punishment that was given to them.
"And have you spoken to the ancestors as of late?"

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ CASSIE TRIED REALLY HARD NOT TO, LIKE, TOTALLY freak out. Monique was her best friend, well, she was before the ritual. After that, they were forced together, and they changed in different ways. Cassie was louder, more vibrant━hell, she talked now! And while Monique used to be one of the only people that made her comfortable, it wasn’t the same anymore. Monique was super intense, and Cassie didn’t really vibe with that energy.
“More important things than pulling your weight and making sure we can all eat?” Cassie frowned. Yeah, she was kinda scared of Monique, but that didn’t clamp her mouth shut when emotions bubbled up. Seriously, what the hell was her problem?
At the mention of Mandy, Cassie visibly deflated. She sank to her elbows on the counter, jaw resting on her palms, and sighed heavily. “No. She…” Cassie trailed off, watching Monique and her judgy expression. Her frown deepened. “I haven’t had time to clean everything yet.” She defended herself quietly, then carried on. “... Anyway, they still haven’t found her. Y’know, Klaus came in a few days before Mandy vanished, telling me he wanted a, like, personal-spell-caster. He said he was gonna be chill about it, though, like he wanted me to come willingly. I don’t know if…” Cassie didn’t finish her sentence, but she figured Monique would catch her drift.
Monique was the first person she’d voiced her concerns aloud to━it felt sorta selfish to say it, and Cassie didn’t want everybody thinking she was blaming herself when it had nothing to do with her.
“Uh, no. I mean━yeah. Yeah, I have.” Cassie’s eyes darted anywhere but her friend. “I… was helping a ghost, and I asked them to guide me.” She wasn’t about to tell Monique she’d messed with the laws of nature to bring someone back to life, but Cassie wasn’t so sure ‘helping a ghost’ was any better. It was what got her into the Harvest Ritual, after all. They said she’d embarrassed the coven, and it was Cassie’s job to make up for it. She wondered if, in the end, the punishment was just.
“Have you? Do they have more errands for us to run?” Cassie scoffed, then suddenly tensed, her eyes widening━making fun of the ancestors in front of Monique was probably a bad move.

where we stand with Cassie Luanna
Monique moved through the shop with the air of someone who was bored with her surroundings. Maybe she was. Maybe she was just stuck in one gear --- the aftermath of the entire Harvest ordeal. She didn't have time to question it. She couldn't. Not given her duties. She was to be the key in paying back the vampire community for all the pain and suffering that had been brought to the witches' feet. She could have something resembling a life afterwards.
"You really think they would let us starve?" Monique asked and it was obvious through her tone of voice just who 'they' was. She wondered if Cassie had lost her faith. There was part of her that could understand that. The Harvest was meant to strengthen their bonds with the ancestors but instead it had been bungled to such a degree that it had shaken them instead. "They will provide and I already told you --- if it is money you want, I will get it." Cassie didn't need to know by what means. Her friend just needed some kind of assurance that she would be cared for.
Monique could do that.
She raised her head, an eyebrow moving upwards at the mention of Klaus. "What? Davina wasn't enough? He took her and made her into his own personal witch bitch. Made her think that it was a good thing too." Cassie knew that. She had been 'there' in the same capacity as Monique. She wondered if Cassie was just as disgusted with their so called friend as she had become. Davina had played right into the hands of various vampires and thus prolonged the captivity of the rest of the witches.
She was close to Cassie now, suddenly wishing that this conversation could be about other things. She missed that. She missed just being her. There were consequences to everything that had gone on and it seemed that Monique had to be the one to pay them. She had accepted her role and she would do what was necessary.
"I am glad to hear that," she admitted, somehow knowing that she shouldn't push any further than that. She had a feeling the details were more than she wanted to know. "They want us to band together. Properly. There are so many things threatening the witch community, Cassie. Just look at what happened here. It's up to us to protect them."

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ DID SHE THINK THEY━THE ANCESTORS━WOULD LET them starve? Uh, yeah. Fucking definitely. They let the girls get their flippin’ throats cut; why the hell wouldn’t the ancestors have them go hungry? She wasn’t gonna voice any of this to Monique, though━Cassie wasn’t fuckin’ stupid. “Okay.” She puffed, not wanting to argue about it anymore. They would provide, but Cassie had serious doubts about bills appearing out of nowhere.
Settled on the counter now, Cassie’s frown became almost permanent. She kept worrying about Mandy and wishing she could help, like there was some witch thing that worked better than a tracking spell━something that would pluck her out of… wherever she was and bring her home. Jeez, maybe the ancestors could do something like that.
“I know,” Cassie puffed, agreeing with Monique (for what felt like the first time in forever). “She’s still there, y’know? I saw her a while ago in the town square. She tried to, like, say she missed us and she painted some shit for us, I dunno. It was super weird and annoying, and I told her to fuck off. Then Klaus came,” Monique hadn’t said it aloud, and it was bugging Cassie, so she finally mumbled, “Do… you think he might’ve taken her? Mandy, I mean.”
Trying to breathe through the anxious knot in her stomach━spoiler alert, it didn’t freakin’ work━Cassie dropped her jaw onto her palms, elbows propped up on the counter. Thankfully, Monique didn’t ask what she’d talked to the ancestors about, and just seemed satisfied that she had.
Blue eyes flicked over to Monique again, dark brows lifting. “Band together? We’re already sharing a motel room made for, like, two people. What more do they want?” Unless she meant the whole witch community, then Cassie just sounded kinda stupid. “So, what’re we gonna do, then? Predict shit before it happens? Last I heard, we were witches, not psychics.” Cassie grumbled, “I don’t see how we coulda prevented this…” But maybe, if there was a way, then Cassie would be happy to do it. It was too late to stop what’d happened to Mandy, but, as on-the-fence as she was about the ancestors, Cassie would hate to see this happen to another witch.

where we stand with Cassie Luanna
Cassie didn't believe. Not like Monique did. That much was obvious to her --- add to that, the ancestors whispered. They saw all and they were not happy with doubters. However, Monique liked Cassie. They were sisters in all this after all. They had been through something that would bond the worst of people. She would simply have to believe enough for her friend. She could do that. She had practically devoted her waking hours to ensuring that the messages from beyond the veil were being passed along properly.
It didn't surprise her that Davina was still trying. Still acting like she had played the same role in the Harvest as the rest of them --- the ones who actually spilled blood, felt the pain of the knife and spent countless months trapped. It wasn't even close. A smile played across her lips as she listened to Cassie's response. "I would like to have been there. We could have told her to fuck off together. I am sure she would have acted offended; how dare we and all that. And of course Klaus was there. He so called guardian angel."
Cassie put forth an idea that had her thinking. Could Klaus be behind the mess here? "Trouble in paradise between he and Davina? Or maybe seeing is how she no longer can squirrel away our power too she isn't enough for him anymore. It's possible he took Mandy. But if it wasn't him --- it was someone else like him." All vampires were the same. They looked at the witch community as their personal servant class. "Which is why I say band together, Cassie. The witch community has to make a stand or we will forever be watching out backs."
She resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "Some witches have the gift of sight. Besides, I have connections, remember?" She tapped her temple with her finger. "But it's not about that. It's about working together. We are stronger that way. It is unfortunate that we won't have Davina but we can find others like her --- ones who wish to ensure that witches are treated as they should be. You can't honestly want to do this..." She indicated their surroundings. "...forever."
