– he has no notion of loving people by halves –
Oh, what a terrible idea. River shouldn't have humored Krista with this, he shouldn't have let his sister drag him to this unknown residence where he could hear the booming music from miles away. The second he stepped inside the residence, he wanted to turn and leave again. If his parents ever heard that he let his sister drag him into this, he would never hear the end of it, and the last thing he wanted to hear was the sound of his parents' disappointed voice from the other end of the phone. River looked around him with a frown tugging at his features, the intent behind his frown was a little judgmental but could you blame him? There was smoke almost coming from every direction and it wasn't the telltale sign of a fire, nope. Just people smoking. "Listen, kiddo, I know I let you talk me into this, but I really don't think we should be here..." River trailed off, his eyes moving to relax back on his younger sister only to find the spot next to him empty. River frowned almost immediately as he peered behind the kitchen counter, just in case Krista was playing some kind of prank on him, but he didn't find anyone there. "Krista?" River called out, his voice barely heard from the loud and frankly, quite obscene, music coming from the big speakers in the living room. "Sorry, excuse me." River passed by a few people, squeezing past them with a thin-lipped smile on his lips as he murmured yet another apology that fell on deaf ears.
He nearly bumped into yet another individual as he was making his way through the crowded living room and this individual, eyed him with a look that made his stomach feel weird and fuzzy. He handed River a red solo cup that had god knows what inside of it and his first instinct was to decline the drink in a gentle voice but he couldn't find the heart to do so because he was really nice to look at.
Oh, God.
River offered him a tight-lipped smile and a nod of his head before he walked away, breathing a sigh of relief when he finally managed to get away from him without making himself look like an even bigger idiot. River stopped in his tracks when he managed to spot his sister through the crowd. He managed to squeeze past a couple of people before he finally managed to reach his younger sister. "You're really fast for someone with such short legs." River grumbled, his expression showcasing the fact that he wasn't pleased by the fact that Krista had gotten away from him. "Do you know how worried I was? Gosh, kiddo, you're gonna make me sport grey hair way too soon and we both know that it won't be a good look on me." River breathed out, his anxiety rolling off of him in waves as he seemed to relax now that he was certain that his sister was safe. That was until an optimistic guy came to offer his drink to Krista which made him sigh. "I'm literally right here, dude. Don't do that." River scolded, hating how he sounded like an overprotective parent to his own ears. "Oh, sorry, didn't know she was your girlfriend, dude. No hard feelings."
Oh, dear God.
"No, she's not my girlfriend–" River shook his head and just gave the guy the red solo cup he was holding and gestured for him to go on his merry way and he finally seemed to take the hint. "Okay, that's officially it. C'mon, let's get out of here. I can't believe I let you talk me into this. This is obviously a mistake."

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA WAS SO FREAKING excited to go to this party. River wasn’t as convinced it was gonna be a great time, but she figured if she kept pushing and squealing about it, her emotions might rub off on him. And, like, she knew what her older brother was like, but they’d never been in this kinda situation, so Krista had high hopes.
And she wanted to have fun! And relax (by… not relaxing)! And be her own person outside of her relationship with Mal.
Oh, maybe she should call him. Maybe… maybe he was bored or something and he’d come. Or maybe he’d be trying to bite somebody else and it would be good for her to interrupt him!
Okay, no, calm down. Breathe. She was breathing.
Leah’s mention of hunters had Krista stopping to think for a moment in front of her mirror, considering, then deciding she wouldn’t cover up her bites. A little part of her wanted to keep rubbing it in River’s face, too━even though he was totally supportive durng the whole briefly-going-missing thing that started all of this. She had a boyfriend, and yeah he was cool and older and totally hot and it didn’t matter what he told River about them ‘cause he was her boyfriend!
Anyway. Back to breathing.
They found the party easily enough━Krista could pretty much follow the sound of the thumping bass and make it there. It was even louder once they stepped through the threshold, and smoky, but she wasn’t deterred. In fact, Krista bounded forward into the crowd, focused on finding her way to the alcohol. She hadn’t really thought about the fact that she was abandoning River, and somewhere in the back of her mind she’d assumed he was following. However, when Krista made it to the circle of people, she realized that A: they weren’t passing around drinks, and B: River wasn’t there. But she didn’t worry, nor did she stop and turn to find him; Krista just waited her turn.
Kitty had explained the etiquette here. Puff, puff, pass━but they were taking so long and she was getting so impatient, and━
‘You're really fast for someone with such short legs.’
Krista turned her head up and grinned innocently at her brother, hoping he’d be too overwhelmed to figure out what she was waiting for. Her brow furrowed at his nickname, though. It’d been cute for a while, maybe it still was, but she didn’t want everyone here to think of her as a kid. River had experience in college, but Krista didn’t! She had to make a name for herself and it wouldn’t be ‘River’s baby sister.’
“I’m not a kid.” Krista stage whispered and, ironically, whined as she said it. But when River sighed, Krista did, too, and eased a bunch of her frustration. She was smiling brightly again by the time the guy approached, about to congratulate River on his drink and seemingly loosening up, but held back to make a good impression on the stranger. If she’d known what he was doing, Krista might’ve yelled something about how she already had a boyfriend, or perhaps she’d mention it to Mal later and see if he got jealous.
River stepped in the middle, though, and Krista didn’t have time to get angry before she was ultimately relieved. She really didn’t wanna cheat on Mal or anything, even accidentally.
She couldn’t help it in the end. A giggle bubbled up, cracking out loudly from her chest, spreading bright amusement all over Krista’s face. “He thought we were dating.” Bouncing on her heels, like adrenaline was racing through her, Krista’s eyes went a little wide and… honestly, kinda crazy. “Man, I love parties. We could be anyone! No one would know! Aaaaah!” She cackled again, patting the back of her hand on River’s stomach twice.
“No way, we’re not goin’ anywhere! This is so much fun!” Just then, they finally got to her turn. Krista grabbed onto the little rolled, smelly thing and put it to her lips, completely ignoring the fact that it’d been on everybody else’s in the circle. She closed her eyes and inhaled for far too long, then immediately began choking and coughing, though she tried to smile and laugh through it, offering it up to River. “You should try this… just once. Nobody’s gonna tell our parents. And, like, it grows from the Earth. And God created the Earth. Soooo… if you think about it, it can’t be a sin…” It still felt a little wrong, though. But Krista just wanted to experience real college life! It was scary, but she had River at her side, which meant she was always gonna be safe.

River rolled his eyes fondly at the way Krista tried to argue with him on that while whining. "I'm your older brother, when I say you're a kid, then you're a kid." That was not at all how it worked and technically, Krista wasn't really a kid but in River's eyes, she would always be that odd little girl who entered his family and soon became a part of their little family. She was someone that River cared about very deeply which was mainly why he was so concerned about letting her go to parties like these. While River wasn't a party-goer himself, he'd heard enough horror stories about what happens to girls in most of them. People can be really evil, sometimes. Which was why he immediately felt concerned when he turned and couldn't find his sister close to him.
River gave his sister a look when she started acting all excited at the prospect of someone thinking they were dating, seeming all too excited about the fact that they could be anyone if they chose to. No one would even know a thing. "First of all, stop doing that." He gestured to the same hand that patted his stomach twice. "Second of all, it's really not that great. What if some guy comes up and starts acting like his name is, I dunno, Shawn while in actuality, his name is Tod and he's a serial killer? You wouldn't know." The chances of that actually happening were pretty low and he knew he was being overprotective to the point where it was suffocating but he didn't want to see his sister hurt.
River tipped his head back with a soft sigh falling from his lips when Krista refused to leave with him. "Man, I knew I was going to regret this." He mumbled mainly to himself, his grumbling already consumed by the loud music and when he looked at his sister, he found her with something between her lips, and upon closer inspection – yup, that's stuff. His sister was straight up smoking stuff. "Woah, woah–! Krista! What the heck are you doing?" River's eyes widened in concern when she started coughing, though he seemed to relax when he saw her attempt to laugh through it.
"Mom and dad would throw a fit if they saw you, Krista." River looked around him for a moment even though he knew there was no way his parents would be here with them. "Oh my god, Krista, no. I don't wanna try it! Ever. Just so you know, it's a sin because you're literally getting high 'cause of it, kiddo." River could hear people 'booing him for chickening out but he instead attempted to reach the joint to put it out. "Give that to me, I'm putting it out." He held his hand out, ignoring the way people were starting to complain. "I'm supposed to look after you, not smoke a joint with you, kiddo. C'mon, give it. You know what? I'm starting to think that you walking out of that store wasn't accidental, after all. Did that guy from the police station encourage you to do this? The one who was dressed like he was cosplaying Neo from the Matrix, is he behind all of this?"

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ MOST OF THE TIME, Krista was the spoilsport. Actually… that wasn’t true. With Kitty, she was, but she was trying to try new things. With her friends from Church, like, back before she ran away, Krista was always the one trying to push them to do new stuff. That was how she ended up in the bar where she met a vampire (the first time), which led to her running away, so maybe she shoulda been more cautious of the choices she made. However, all of that brought her to where she was now, and Krista couldn’t have been happier! So, all in all, she was making great choices! At least fun ones! So River should, too! Maybe it would get him to loosen up.
She already knew a serial killer, whoops. And even though that should’ve terrified her, Krista didn’t get nervous when she thought about Mal. It was like that one time he told her not to be scared was all she needed. She wasn’t gonna tell River any of that, though, ‘cause he’d totally flip. Krista shrugged up at him, “Then I meet Tod the Serial Killer. So what? I’m not gonna go be alone with anybody. I ain’t stupid.” She puffed defensively, though she was stupid a lot of the time.
River would probably call this stupid. Filling her lungs with smoke, nearly hacking up one of them from coughing. She could see it in the way he looked at her now, meeting Krista’s excited expression with an incredulous look. Well, first it was, then he just started gettin’ all bossy. Like the Fun Police.
“Good thing they’re not here, huh? Is that why you’re bein’ such a buzzkill? ‘Cause you think you gotta be a parent when they’re not around? Well, ya don’t, and you should try having fun for, like, once in your life.” She was still a bit lighthearted, trying to push the rolled ‘cigarette’ towards River in offering, but pulling her hand back whenever he looked like he was gonna grab it and put it out. “Yeah, well using the Lord’s name in vain is also a sin, but you just did that, sooooo…” Krista raised her brows and smirked, thinking she was being super smart. More of a smartass, really. She sometimes got this way, though it’d gotten better as she got older. She remembered their parents suffering through her moods where she wouldn’t do anything they said, and she’d seek any sort of attention she could, whether it was good or bad. Thanks to good parenting, Krista had grown out of it. Almost.
Now, though, she was mainly just teasing. She knew River would never cave, but a teeny-tiny part of her thought maybe she could get him to try it. That was what still spurred her on, a big smile on her lips while she ignored the rest of the circle’s groans behind them. She also could’ve just handed it over, but that would mean giving up this game, and Krista was not a quitter.
It was fun ‘til he brought up Mal. Krista was still smiling until River accused her of lying about stealing (which she did). A few different scenarios raced through Krista’s mind. She considered giving him the joint but, instead, pressing the lit end to his palm, then she thought about swallowing the whole thing or crushing it in her hand, but ultimately let all of those wild ideas go in one long, slow breath. In, then out. She didn’t have to hurt anybody. She was just being… over the top. Her psychiatrist said she wasn’t supposed to call herself ‘crazy’ anymore.
Tears welled in her hazel eyes, a pronounced frown creasing over her lips. “You don’t know anything about me or Mal or the store.” She hissed, glancing at his palm before turning and pointedly handing over the smoke. There were a few happy murmurs from the rest of the circle, and as soon as Krista turned back to face her brother, the group started to shift and cut the siblings out of it. “Don’t talk about him like that. I think he dresses great, and he doesn’t tell me what to do. Only you and mom and dad try to boss me around, but Mal’s, like, the only person who didn’t. And Kitty… but I met Mal first. Doesn’t matter!” She puffed, exasperated. “The point is, you’re ruining all the fun and you’re talking bad about my boyfriend, and I don’t wanna hear it. You don’t have to be mean when you’re bossy, either.” Krista was careful not to talk about the stealing thing, ‘cause she didn’t wanna lie again. And screw it, she’d tell River that Mal was her boyfriend; she didn’t freakin’ care anymore! He could flip out all he wanted, but that wouldn’t change the way she felt!

– he has no notion of loving people by halves –
River's eyes narrowed at Krista, watching her without saying anything for a moment. "I didn't say that, Krista. You're just– too trusting sometimes and I worry about you, kiddo." River clarified a moment later, knowing he was being a little too suffocating, like their parents but at the end of the day, he was only being like this because he cared a lot about her. He didn't want to see her hurt because honestly, the mere thought alone scared him to death. "You know what, fine, I'll trust you on this. Don't make me regret it." River decided to break that endless cycle that his parents grilled in his mind ever since Krista had entered their lives. They continuously told him to look after her, to make sure that she doesn't get herself in trouble, and from that day on, he had made a promise to his parents to always look after her and that was definitely why he got a little too overprotective at times.
River pressed his lips into a thin line as he listened to Krista, quirking an eyebrow momentarily when she mentioned that he was being a buzzkill. His expression turned into one of mock offense as he pressed his hand against his chest as if to say I'm a buzzkill? before he shook his head. He seemed to pause for a moment as his lips parted to let out a soft oh because he didn't even realize he had done that. "Hey, don't give me that attitude, young lady. I'm not being a buzzkill or acting like a parent. I'm being your brother, a brother who is worried about you doing all ..." He made a wild hand gesture toward Krista. "That. Plus, I can have tons of fun, what gives you the, uh, the impression that I don't have fun? This is just not the kind of atmosphere where I can have fun, I guess... Too crowded." Too many good-looking guys. River kicked the thought out as soon as it had entered his mind. He forced his eyes to remain fixed on Krista for two reasons, the first one was that he was worried if he were to look away for two seconds she'd disappear again and the second, he was worried that if he were to look at any of the guys, he'd get caught and they'd probably punch the daylights out of him for being such a creep. "Also, pointing out my sin was a low blow, kiddo. Still doesn't change the fact that doing this..." Once again, he gestured to what Krista had in her hand. "Isn't right."
River's eyes widened when he noticed the tears gathering in Krista's eyes when he brought up the guy from the police station. Her reaction was not one he had expected at all and it was obvious from the way he looked flabbergasted. "K–Kiddo? Are you crying? Why–" She quickly told him why and he could barely even function properly as he listened to her. His shoulders sagged when she mentioned only her family seemed to try to boss her around but this guy – Mal – apparently does not. River was pretty sure that his expression had gone through all five stages of grief as he processed that one word.
Boyfriend.
He wasn't just her friend, no, no, he was her boyfriend. River stood there, unable to process what he had just heard before he abruptly turned and snatched the smoke from the one person who had it and proceeded to capture it between his lips, taking a big inhale before he erupted in a coughing fit, handing it back to the nameless person. Once his coughing had subsided, his attention finally relaxed on Krista as he straightened his back. "Okay, uhm–" River began, his tongue feeling drier than the Sahara desert for some reason. "Kiddo, I'm sorry, okay? I don't mean to control you. God knows I try to be better than our parents with that part but it seems like I still managed to mess that up anyway. I'm just worried about you, okay? He doesn't exactly like trustw–" He abruptly paused when he realized that he was being mean again and he didn't want to risk making his sister fully cry. "I'm sorry, okay, I won't say anything mean. Looking after you has always been my top priority, kiddo. Ever since day one, when you were this tall–" He lowered his hand as far down as he could to show just how tiny Krista had been that day. "I don't want anything bad to happen to you. It happened to you once already and I– I wasn't there. I don't want a repeat of that day. Ever. That's why I'm being so suffocating like this. I just can't lose you, kiddo."
River licked his bottom lip, deciding to be just a little better than their parents. "So... are you happy with him? Does he look after you?"

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ HE STARTED BY GIVING, LIKE, A TOTAL PARENT line and then tried to say he wasn’t doing it. Seriously, ‘don’t gimme that attitude’? That was just as bad as ‘I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.’ Complete cliche, and super annoying. Krista rolled her eyes, wishing she had the wherewithal to go through everything he said, but her attention was stolen as soon as Mal got brought into it.
With tears flooding her eyes, making River a hazy, tall figure in front of her, Krista defended Mal and their relationship. She hated this. She hated hiding it from her brother━or from anyone━and she definitely hated that River didn’t like Mal and tried to boss her around. She waited for him to bark back, to defend his position, but then he… took a drag.
Oh my gosh.
“I can’t believe that just happened.” Without meaning to, Krista allowed a giant smile to grow on her lips, practically splitting her face in half. She started giggling despite the tears, quiet at first, then slowly snowballing into something more boisterous. It all stopped when River almost claimed Mal wasn’t trustworthy. He was. Krista trusted him so much.
She let River get through his little speech, smiling again by the end, nodding when he mentioned that day. The day she met her first vampire━the day she couldn’t remember. Krista was pretty wrapped up in herself and then her parents’ whole view of it, so much so that she hadn’t considered how scared everyone was. Just because it felt like a split-second of time didn’t mean it actually was, or that anyone else had lost that portion of their day.
“S’okay,” She mumbled finally, moving in to wrap her arms around River and stay there for a moment, settling into the safety her brother offered. He mighta been suffocating, and he probably wouldn’t stop being so, but at least she knew it came from a place of love. “I get it. I promise I’m still bein’ safe, and you’re my first call if I need someone.” Stepping back, Krista beamed up at her big brother━AKA the best big brother in the world.
Okay, so maybe he wouldn’t be her first call. She’d probably decide who’d be less judgemental for whatever it was, but it was pretty much true. Krista just couldn’t debate between calling Mal or River, and figured it would have to depend. Maybe Mal wouldn’t answer, which, honestly, was pretty likely.
But… she couldn’t tell River everything. Not like the kinda stuff she told Kitty, ‘cause she knew River would be pissed about most things or more than a little uncomfortable. And she wanted River to like Mal! Telling him too much would just ruin that.
Was she happy with Mal? “Yeah, super happy. Like, happier than I’ve ever been.” Did he look after her, though? Krista hesitated for half a second before beaming again, “Totally, uh huh. He…” Her cheeks went hot at the thought of just how he looked after her, and she erupted in giggles, “He’s the best. I love hangin’ out with him, bein’ near him… everythin’.” Krista sighed somewhat wistfully, then reached out to push River’s shoulder playfully.
“Hey, we should get you a girlfriend! It’ll help you get out more━maybe you’ll be funner at parties.” Krista teased, laughing, and then she turned away from the group of smokers, grabbing River’s arm to turn him with her, until they were facing outwards to the rest of the party. “Maybe there’s someone here! See anythin’ you like?” She asked, then pointed to a petite redhead in the corner, holding a plastic cup and chatting with her friends. Krista could only see one side of her, but she was totally cute. “How ‘bout her?! She’s pretty!”

— he has no notion of loving people by halves —
Upon taking a drag, he didn't feel much at first other than the itchiness in his throat that soon developed into a burn which sent him into a coughing fit but as his coughing subsided, he began to feel a little more relaxed which was an emotion he had forgotten all about its existence over time after spending most of his time, if not all of it, worrying about all sorts of things, especially ones out of his control. River liked the feeling, a lot, actually. "Honestly? Me neither." River breathed out an incredulous laugh. "Mom and dad would actually have a heart attack on the spot if they heard about this." He was supposed to be the responsible one, after all. It felt like he had let them down, big time, but he was comforted by the fact that Krista wouldn't snitch on him and none of the party-goers here knew about him. He was starting to understand what Krista had meant earlier, they were like ghosts here, they could be whoever they wanted.
River's expression softened before he nodded his head once, comforted by her words. "Okay, good. Thank you. That's all I wanted to hear." He was going to try to stop hovering so much, emphasis on try. It probably won't be easy at first, but he knew that at some point, he was going to have to accept that Krista was old enough to be her own person now. Old enough to make her own decisions and bear the consequences alone.
River was quiet as he listened to Krista talk about Mal, torn between getting overprotective or being genuinely happy for her that she had found someone who could make her happy like that. Maybe what he felt deep down was a mixture of both. "I can't believe I'm having this conversation with my baby sister." River breathed out with a chuckle following. His sister had a boyfriend. It was definitely going to take him a hot minute to get used to that. "I'm happy for you, Krista. I really am." River said with a genuine smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Look at you, all grown up." River reached out in an attempt to annoyingly ruffle Krista's hair, though he'd pull away if she stopped him. "I still wanna talk to the guy, though. I wanna be one-hundred sure that he's a good guy. I'm trusting him with my baby sister, after all."
River's eyes nearly fell out of their eye sockets when Krista mentioned getting him a girlfriend. "A g-girlfriend?" His voice was a lot more high-pitched when he said that out loud that it made him wince a little. As much as he wanted to reveal that he wanted to get a boyfriend, just like her, he couldn't. At least, not yet. Not when he didn't feel comfortable even thinking about that kind of stuff yet. It's not like he worried that they would turn him away with disgust or that their parents would disown him, it just had a lot to do with his own comfort and his acceptance of the whole thing. River cleared his throat, trying not to let his discomfort seep into his expression as he found himself turned around so he could look at the other party-goers. "Are you suggesting that I'm a hermit? My feelings are very hurt, Krista." He even pressed his own hand against his chest to showcase just how hurt he was.
"Umm, someone I like..." River bit down on his bottom lip, his eyes scanning the crowd before his eyes relaxed on a guy who had his snapback on backward, had a silver chain dangling from his neck, and from afar, he really looked like the most untrustworthy guy out there but River couldn't help but stare at his bare arms and his abs. God, who walks around shirtless? Him. He subconsciously picked him before he realized he was staring a little too hard for too long so he quickly cleared his throat and looked away to find the girl that Krista was pointing out, the complete opposite from River's pick. "Um... She's not really my type." River responded before momentarily panicking deep down because he really didn't mean to say that out loud. His eyes scanned the crowd in a panic before settling on a certain girl amongst the crowd who stood out so effortlessly. At least to River.
"She's more my type, I guess." River offered with a quick shrug of his shoulders as he pointed to a girl with muscular arms, short hair, and a black shirt paired with ripped black jeans and combat boots. She had a tattoo on her arm that stretched all the way down to her hand. "We don't have to get me a girlfriend or anything, I'm fine with being single, really. It's no big deal."

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ RIVER WANTED TO TALK TO MAL? ERRR… WELL, Krista supposed she couldn’t stop him if he was really determined. The idea made a nervous bubble start in her stomach, like a flurry of butterflies spreading outwards, though it wasn’t the happy kinda butterflies she got when she was around Mal. This was anxiety. That’s what her therapist said. But… if River talked to Mal and ended up liking him, then it’d be easier to, like, do whatever she wanted. River wouldn’t worry so much.
She just had to make sure Mal was on his best behaviour…
Shooting a bright grin at her brother, Krista nodded twice, quick, head bobbing so much it almost looked like it’d fall off. Her hands darted up, though, batting at River’s like a cat when he ruffled her hair. She laughed, shook it out, and then finger-combed the yellow strands back into place. Normally, she didn’t care that much about being put together, but this was a party! Krista put time into looking good! “You suck,” She laughed, grinning as she shook her head, “But fine, you can talk to ‘im. We’ll figure it out later.”
Right now, her focus was on having fun… and making sure River didn’t end up all sad and alone. River practically squeaked the word ‘girlfriend’ back to her, but Krista wasn’t deterred. He was always nervous about this sorta stuff, but that was why he didn’t have a girlfriend! Well, okay, so Krista was nervous too, but then she met Mal and everything ended up being fine. Great, even! River just needed to meet his Mal. (Unfortunately, she had no idea how right she really was.)
‘Are you suggesting that I'm a hermit? My feelings are very hurt, Krista.’
Snorting a laugh, she nudged River with her elbow and turned to scan the crowd for pretty girls. She thought the redhead was the perfect pick, and figured River would, too, but he… chose another girl. Following the line of his finger with her eyes, Krista narrowed them towards the mass of people, trying to find… no way, really? “Her?” She sounded a lot more judgemental than she meant to. Krista’s brows knit together so hard that a crease formed between them. “Uh… I mean, she kinda looks like a boy, but okay…”
She tried to stay open-minded. Mal was a lot older than her (a lot, a lot, depending on which way you looked at it), and that was something River had to overcome. So, logically, it was only fair that she had to overlook River’s potential girlfriend’s flaws… she could hear her therapist in her head, but that didn’t stop the judgement from rolling around in there, too.
“Whatever! Let’s go talk to her!” Grabbing River’s wrist (in a death grip, despite her tiny, frail-looking frame), she dragged her older brother over to the tomboy. “Hello!” She chirped over the music, watching the girl glance over, somewhat irritated, but then the expression faded into a grin at Krista. “My brother thinks you’re really cute, but he’s super shy, so I’m playing wing-woman! I’m Krista, and this is River!” She motioned to her brother, and then raised the wrist she was holding and shook it in the air at the girl. “We wanted to say hi!”
The girl looked uninterested in the guy practically offered up on a silver platter, but directed more of her smile at Krista. Krista, however, was totally oblivious━she just thought the girl was bein’ nice! Which was a good thing, too, ‘cause she looked a little scary before they walked over…

— he has no notion of loving people by halves —
River's lips stretched into a teasing grin when Krista told him that he sucked for messing up her hair. "Hey, c'mon, isn't that what the youngsters look like these days? If anything, I should charge you for giving you such a cool hairstyle." River was, for some reason, talking like he was six hundred and sixty-nine but in actuality, he was only twenty-five years old. "Alright." He figured that right now wasn't the time to make up plans to meet Krista's alleged boyfriend. He needed to make sure that her boyfriend could be trusted and if he got a weird vibe, then he'll have to pull the 'older sibling' card and prevent Krista from seeing him. If she wasn't gonna to take good care of herself, he was gonna do it for her.
You see, River could have literally picked anyone else but instead, he settled for a tomboy looking girl because she was the closest he could get to his type without actually picking one of the handsome guys at the party and oh man, the party was filled with handsome guys. It was a challenge not to stare at any of them. It didn't help that some of them preferred to walk around either shirtless or with their shirts wide open, giving him the freedom to look as much as he wanted and oh boy did he want to look for hours. River blinked out of his thoughts when he realized that were straying a little too far into that darn rainbow-colored part of his brain.
"You're doing that thing with your voice. The judgmental tone." River shook his head, much like a disappointed parent. "Not very nice, Krista." He scolded, though his voice lacked any heat to it, it still carried a gentle tone to it. "Plus, I'm sure she's, uhm, a very nice lady even if she looks like a boy."
River was more than ready to move on from that conversation though because it had some real potential to go terribly wrong and he would rather not make any mistakes and expose himself. It wasn't the fear of judgment that kept him from talking to Krista about his secrets, but it was just the fact that he wasn't even comfortable thinking about it yet. He wondered if the day would come where he'd feel comfortable enough to talk about it to Krista because if he trusted anyone, it would be his younger sister. He trusted her with his life. "Anyway, like I said, we don't have to get me a girlfriend, I'm fine, seriously..." River paused when Krista mentioned going over to the girl to talk to her. "Oh no, no, what are you doing? Don't you dare! Krista—!" River whisper-yelled as he tried to wriggle his wrist free from Krista's grip but it was too strong. Seriously, how does she have so much strength in her when she's so tiny and frail?
River closed his eyes and tipped his head back with a sigh falling from his lips, wondering what he had done to deserve any of this. He opened his eyes and lowered his head, his eyes relaxing on the girl who looked irritated for a moment before her expression changed as she laid her eyes on Krista. His eyes nearly bulged out of his skull as he moved his attention back to his sister, begging her with his eyes to stop as his cheeks turned red from embarrassment. "I don't." River cringed when his denial meant that he didn't think that she was cute which sounded really rude. He scrambled to fix his mistake but the girl's expression had already soured by then. "No! No, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that, but I just don't—" His words died on his tongue as the girl turned her attention to his sister instead.
"What about you, though? You don't think I'm cute?" The girl offered back to Krista instead, practically ignoring River's tall presence. River watched the interaction, his lips parting and closing a few times. "I, for one, think you're very cute." She added a moment later and it left River reeling for a moment. Was this conversation actually happening? River thought to himself as he listened to the girl talk to his sister. It made him realize that he may not be her type either, but his sister sure was her type. "Um. We're just gonna—" River pointed behind him. "We're just gonna go. Sorry to bother you. C'mon, Krista, let's go." This time around, it was River who was holding onto Krista's wrist as he attempted to walk away with her.

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ DIDN’T HAVE TO GET HIM A GIRLFRIEND? NO, no━Krista knew River would be super happy once he got one. Krista was the same way! Sure, she really, really wanted a boyfriend, but… she didn’t know how much she wanted one ‘til she had one! And River would see how great it was!
If this girl was nice, like, at all. And it didn’t seem like she was.
River wasn’t, either━apparently. Krista yanked on his wrist and flashed him a deep pout, clearly majorly disappointed at his response. River seemed to try to make up for it, but the girl turned her attention to Krista instead. Wait, what the heck…
“Um…” Krista frowned, though it was more confusion than anything else, “I mean, cute’s not the word I’d use, but yeah, you’re pretty…” She was tryin’ to be nice. This girl looked like a boy, and not a cute boy. Not like Mal.
Krista didn’t understand what was happening for a very long time. She half-smiled awkwardly at the tomboy, still being polite. “Uh, thanks!” She chimed, raising a brow at River, trying to share a look with him. “But, um, we’re here for my brother, who needs a girlfriend… ‘cause…” This kinda defeated the purpose, though, right? If she wasn’t interested in River, then why were they even…
‘We're just gonna go. Sorry to bother you. C'mon, Krista, let's go.’
“Huh?” She finally tuned back in, moving her quizzical gaze from the girl and back to River, almost like she had trouble looking away. Finally, it dawned on her. “Ohhhh!” Krista called out as she was dragged off, waving her free hand at the girl, “Thanks!” She laughed, “But I have a boyfriend!” Giggling, Krista finally turned and bopped alongside River, snickering once they were finally outta the party.
“Wow, she likes girls.” Krista giggled again, “Who woulda thought?” Literally anyone, but they hadn’t been exposed to much of that in the small town where they grew up, and River had been out on the town for far longer━AKA college, all of which was new to Krista. “That’s so funny. It’s okay, next time we’ll find you a real lady. Err, I mean━like, a lady for you. Who likes guys, not other ladies.” She snickered. “Don’t worry, River! We got this! We just gotta make sure you pick better next time.” She believed wholeheartedly that they could do better━find him a girlfriend━totally ignoring the fact that River seemed very uninterested in one.
