Summer automatically injected happiness into Hazel’s veins. Warm weather, light nights, picnic days and fun in the sun with her friends. Then once school had finished she would get to visit her grandparents at the farm, which meant a week of fun with her family and looking after the animals. So yeah, summer was non-stop excitement from the moment it began. This year her parents had started to hint that Hazel was old enough to get a summer job now, but she wasn’t as keen. What could she even do? Serve food at the grill where everyone from school would see her. How embarrassing. Or maybe scoop ice cream into cones for a few hours per day. She brushed the suggestion off, saying she’ll think about it, although if her mom decided something was happening it was happening. Maybe she could dance around the subject until it was too late in the summer to get a job. Then again if she had a job she wouldn’t have to ask her parents for money every time she left the house. She would have her own cash to spend on whatever she wanted, like cute tops or new makeup or even a new car. Granted, that was stretching the imagination a little bit, but then she could take her friends on little road trips. So the whole idea of getting a job was becoming more and more appealing, but then there was a massive drawback that she’d actually have to work for the money. That could mean she would have to wake up early during the summer holidays. Life as a seventeen-year-old could be so hard. Unfortunately, the queue for the Ice Cream Parlour extended out the shop and down the road. She loved ice cream but she didn’t love it enough to queue for it, leaving her to get one from the shop. A whole lot cheaper, but not as tasty. Basic flavours but nonetheless it was still ice cream. Hazel slipped her phone out of her pocket, sending a message to her group chat that the queue for the Ice Cream Parlour was huge so they should meet in the park. She then sent a quick snap of herself eating her ice cream as she wandered down the street, just swerving out the way of someone at the last minute who muttered something about teenagers being glued to their phones. A similar comment that her parents would sometimes say to her when she came home from school, her fingers tapping rapidly on the screen. How else was she supposed to communicate with her friends though? She continued to stroll down the streets, spotting a boy out of the corner of her eye sitting on a bench in the car park. He looked like he was asleep or something, with a laptop balancing on his lap. A perfect opportunity for someone who wanted to steal it. Hazel headed over towards the boy to check he was okay. As she drew closer she realised he wasn’t sleeping, just zoned out. Dead behind the eyes almost. “Hey! You alright?” The boy didn’t say anything or even more. His gaze didn’t even flick up towards her. “Hello?” She waved her hand in front of his front, but he still didn’t budge. “Excuse me? Do you need to call someone?” There was a sense of panic in her voice as she dug her cell phone back out of her pocket. LEX CAMERON

━ one click and you are overwritten ━ LEX WASN’T DOING THIS ‘cause he liked Winter or whatever, not even like-like, just… okay, he didn’t give a shit, alright? The thievin’ business was slow, so he had time on his hands to look up the asshole who’d been so rude to her. Finding his work profile was easy enough, getting into the FBI’s database was a bit harder, but then when it came to everything else… well, Lex had to work more. Something he didn’t like to do, but this guy was shitty to Winter, aight? So… so he was doing it.
And he was doing it on a bench in a parking lot ‘cause the hotel they were staying in was snazzy as shit, and he didn’t need anybody tracing it back to the owner. His dad would likely come looking for him again, then drag him home by his ear while his step-mom gave him some lecture about how they had to be a family or some shit. Fuck that.
With some focus, Lex slipped into his laptop, one hand gripping the joint where the bottom met the screen. He was out of control of his body by then, completely dead to the world, unblinking with his eyes glued to the screen. He travelled through the inner workings of the internet and found Elias’ work computer, which… jackpot, ‘cause he’d done a whole bunch of research on his birth family after meeting Winter. All Lex had to do was scroll through until he found the day it happened, and then there were tons of records. He’d been forced to put all his information in to look up his twin brother, which meant Lex had absolutely everything━on both Winter and Elias. Mostly Elias, though, obvs. Birth records, adoption shit, everything about the couple that adopted him and every house he’d lived in since then. His phone was currently connected to his work computer, so Lex went into there, too, and took a good look at all of this guy’s bank shit. Not only was he fucking flush, but he had a shit ton in savings, too. Seemed like the responsible type. The type that would notice if a little started to go missing.
Lex figured he’d ask Winter before doing all that, because either it was all or nothing━they had to drain that shit if they were takin’ something.
Slowly sliding back out the way he came, Lex eventually returned to the land of the living, blinking slowly and then flinching when he realized some chick was super fucking close to him. “Jeeeesus, why you all up in my grill?” Lips peeling back from his teeth to flash a disgruntled expression, Lex furrowed his brow. His eyes ticked up to her, frowning and slamming his laptop closed. He hadn’t heard anything she said, only that she was standing there with her phone out, looking all worried and shit. The same thing had happened with his dad, and Lex wondered why the fuck people had to keep bugging him and shit?! “I was fine; it’s called fooocus, dawg. Like, what fuckin’ compels a person to walk up to someone mindin’ their own damn business?”
Frowning, Lex continued to squint up at her, a little peeved by the sun━this is why he liked being indoors. He spotted her ice cream, though, and leaned a little to the side to eye the long-ass ice cream line down the street. “Shiiiit, you’re tellin’ me you waited in that line for some fuckin’ ice cream? How long did it take? Like, half an hour?” Lex couldn’t imagine waiting that long, but Winter liked ice cream, so maybe he could swipe some off some unsuspecting people who’d just received their cones.

People weren’t as friendly as Hazel and she wasn’t naive enough to think everyone was. School taught her that. In her first few weeks, she would flash a smile to everyone and anyone, but it wasn’t always returned. Some people walked around with a constant resting bitch face and this guy looked like he had one as well, especially when he snapped back to reality from wherever the hell he was. Maybe he was off dreaming about an ice cream like Hazel was as soon as she woke up. First, she needed to beg her parents for some money for the ice cream. Her life as a teenager had now hit reset as well. There hadn’t been any more ‘episodes’, so she had been telling herself that it was a one off. Maybe she had a few years until something like that happened again. However, she was convinced that her parents were whispering about installing some kind of camera in her room so they could check up on her, like she was a baby again. There wasn’t a realistic way of keeping her locked inside her bedroom without infringing on her privacy. She was still trying to find a way to work into the conversation that one of the girls was having a ‘sleepover’ in a few weeks for their birthday. It was true that she was sleeping over, but it wasn’t the type of kids' sleepovers she had when she was younger. Her friend promised music and alcohol, but Hazel had already voiced her views about the alcohol. She was happy with everyone drinking it, but she wasn’t keen on it herself. What if she ended up trashed and had an episode. Maybe she’d be too drunk to hear the voices or white noise inside her head. No, she had to keep in control of herself which meant no drinking, even if being drunk did look super fun. The most she’d drank was a few sips of wine from her cousins and she hated the taste. Screwing her face up in disgust as she handed the glass back before taking a huge gulp of wine in an attempt to wash away the awful taste. The girls were talking about drinking vodka though. The hard stuff. The stuff that adults drink in bars. The girls weren’t going to pressure her into drinking either. Hazel would kick back with her soda, but first she needed to ask her parents. Whenever it came to asking permission from her parents in the back of her head Hazel was telling herself she was an adult now and she shouldn’t be asking to go to her friend's house. She was old enough to drive therefore she was old enough to make decisions. Then what made it even worse was when her mom insisted on calling her friend’s mom to make sure everything was in order. It seemed like no one else's parents did that only hers. Hazel stepped back immediately when the boy snapped at her. “In your grill?” She cocked an eyebrow as she looked back at him. Sounded like some gang talk. Then he swore, “Hey! Mind your language. I was only checking to see if you were okay because you looked not okay. Jeez, next time I won’t bother.” She furiously took a bite of her ice cream, shooting the boy a cold glare. She was about to walk away from the rude as hell boy but then he spoke again. Swearing again. She glanced over her shoulder towards the queue, “Nah.” She looked back at the rude boy, “Like it’s good ice cream there but not worth queuing that long for.” Melting in the sun whilst waiting her turn didn’t sound appealing, “Grabbed one from the shop. Obviously it’s not as good. Vanilla. I wanted fudge brownie or maybe butterscotch.” This time she bit the ice cream gently as she looked down at her laptop, although she couldn’t see the screen. “How come you're out here on your laptop?” She could never imagine bringing her laptop to a parking lot to browse the internet for new clothes. ━ one click and you are overwritten ━ LEX’S BROWS WENT UP, EYES NARROWED, PULLING some stupid expression that was full-on incredulous. “Miiiind my language? I dunno whether to ask if you’re some ancient-ass teacher or four years old, man. You never heard somebody say ‘fuck’ before? Maybe you should crawl outta your bothering-random-people hole and experience the world.” Okay, so he was being mean, but when was he not being mean? He didn’t ask for this chick to check on him, and he sure as shit didn’t need her help. He knew it was born outta something nice, obviously, but it didn’t mean Lex had to like or accept it. “Yeah, next time you shouldn’t bother. Just let me straight up die on this bench, man; it ain’t your problem.”
Lex switched up quick, though, focusing instead on the ice cream in her hand. It was hot as balls outside, and he was sure Winter would probs get all happy if he brought back info about her not-brother and some ice cream. He got kinda distracted for a second, thinking about what it’d look like if she got so excited that she started doing that bouncy thing chicks do, going up and down and… huh?
Alright, so his mind drifted. It wasn’t a full exit from reality like what he’d been in before, but still. “Vanilla? Damn, you’re boring.” He kinda meant it as a joke, but the words came out very deadpan. Lex shot her a smirk just to communicate his jest, though he was sure that wouldn’t help entirely━he still looked somewhat like a little shit while doing it.
He’d already slammed the laptop shut when she came over, but Lex tightened his fingers around the edges when she looked at it, as if he had to keep it clamped shut to maintain privacy. Not only was it illegal, but he also just liked being left to his own devices. Literally. Just him and his laptop and he’d be alright.
“Why? Are you the parking lot police? Is that why you bugged me ‘n shit? Why’re you out here… getting ice cream?” He answered quickly, raising his brows. It didn’t make a ton of sense, especially because it was a ‘nice day’ (by the standards of people who went outdoors), and he was doing the less-normal thing than she was. “Homework.” Lex added sheepishly.
He twisted and shoved the laptop in his backpack, which was empty━so much for the homework, huh? Lex pushed to his feet, slipping one arm into a strap, and, suddenly, he was a whole lot taller than the blonde chick. It felt a lot better than sitting and staring up at her. “Hey, look at that street light malfunctioning.” Lex said randomly, pointing up at one of the lamps high above their heads. It took him a moment, and maybe a bit too much concentration, but he could feel the thrum of electricity running through the post. He had the light come on, flicker, and sent too much into it, causing the bulb to burst. It flashed and sputtered, encapsulated by the diffuser over it, but it was definitely out. “Shit,” Lex grumbled, dropping his hand and turning, trying to rush away while he still had time.

Obviously people used cuss words within their day to day language. Hazel wasn’t an idiot. She’d heard a few words slip out of her mom’s mouth from time to time, before she’d quickly cover her mouth and apologise to Hazel, as if her ears would bleed at the sound of a cuss word. Immediately she folded her arms as the boy continued to be rude and not even a little bit rude, like very rude which made her angry. “Maybe you should chill out for a second and think about the way you speak to people… it’s clear your parents never taught you manners growing up.” There was a snap in her voice as she spoke, similar to the one heard in her mom’s voice when her patience was wearing thin with someone. It was a good job her mom wasn’t nearby otherwise she would have grabbed the boy by the ear and taught him some manners. The annoyance that was present in his voice quickly changed into curiosity about the ice cream. Maybe he was one of those people who switched between emotions rapidly although Hazel had zero room for judgement. Those teenager hormones had her crying one minute because she couldn’t find her favourite bag to laughig the next minute about a stupid picture on the internet. It was a rollercoaster of emotions and she had her dad muttering about these teenager hormones to her mom occasionally. “I’m not boring.” Hazel interjected quickly, “It was this or mint chocolate chip which in my opinion tastes like toothpaste” She pulled a face of disgust as she thought about the taste of mint chocolate chip ice cream sitting on her tongue, “Anyway like I said I wanted fudge brownie or butterscotch, which isn’t boring.” Ugh, why was she explaining herself to this rude boy? She noticed the whiteness appear in his knuckles as his grip tightened on the laptop, as though she was going to lurch forward and steal it. Like she’d want his shabby laptop anyway. It was probably full of boy things like cars and explicit pictures of girls… amongst other things. Gross. Hazel raised an eyebrow, “Jeez, you are a cagey person… I’m obviously here to get ice cream.” Her tone was sarcastic as she nodded towards her ice cream. There was nothing weird about coming out to get ice cream, but it was weird to sit in a parking lot doing your homework. She was about to bite even further at him and make a comment about not having a home to go to, but that was cruel. There was a chance he had nowhere to go. She stepped back as he stood up off the wall, getting ready to leave. She turned her body towards whatever light he was talking about, eating her ice cream as she watched it flicker for a moment before it burst, causing her to jump slightly. Then she heard the boy mutter another cuss word to himself. Rapidly she spun back around, “Did… did you do that?” Could people do that? “You did that didn’t you?” As she spoke she sounded excited, “How did you do that?” She was barely leaving enough time for him to get his words in before throwing questions at him. “It’s totally okay by the way… I can do things too.” Maybe it wasn’t as cool as making a lightbulb shatter. In fact, it wasn’t cool at all, but he didn’t need to know that. LEX CAMERON

━ one click and you are overwritten ━ OKAY, SO THERE WAS A CHANCE THIS CHICK WAS actually just here to get ice cream. Like, a really big chance. And also that Lex was being kinda crazy and freaking out for no reason. He could literally hear Winter’s voice being just like this chick’s and asking what the hell was his problem, and though Lex pretended not to care about what they thought, a tiny part of him did. He was a dude━he had to care about chicks, right?
Gross. No. It wasn’t like that between either of them. Right now, he was just super tired of being bugged by this chick and her vanilla ice cream, so he worked out his escape plan. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as he’d expected.
Lex started to march away as the girl turned and started talking at him, eager to escape the situation before he made a bigger mess of things. He kept moving, having no plans of stopping even as she started firing questions at him. Lex was not turning around, he━
Oh, shit. What?
Halting, he turned in place and faced the girl raising his brows at her. Lex stared for a second before rushing back over, getting close enough so he could whisper. “Chill, chill, chill, aight?” He hissed, glancing around nervously before looking back to her. “Things like what?” He asked, not totally believing her. He wasn’t about to admit to anything before he had some legit proof first━Lex wasn’t an idiot. “Like that?” Pointing to the burst light without looking at it, Lex narrowed his eyes at her━okay, they were actually kinda pretty━hazel ones, as if he’d be able to pick out a lie.

There was a chance the boy could have called her insane, insisting he had nothing to do with the flickering lights and that she needed some kind of professional help. Her parents told her she needed to keep her secret to herself. She couldn’t tell anyone, not even Abi, which was totally crazy because Abi was her best mate and they told each other everything, but she promised her parents she wouldn’t utter a word to anyone about them being supernaturals. Well, until now, but this was different because he was showing off his talents. Like he wanted Hazel to know. There was a huge grin on her face as he rushed back over towards her, telling her to chill. He was the one who needed to take a chill pill. The boy was so wound up and moody and for what? It was just another mystery of the male mind that she would never get to the bottom of. “Well…” Her voice trailed off for a moment. She couldn’t tell him the truth because he seemed kind of mean and would probably make fun of Hazel for screaming at dead bodies. She didn’t even know how to describe what it meant to be a banshee because she didn’t understand it herself. What could she say? She would hear noises or voices then she’d find someone dead. “I can talk to dead people… like ghosts and stuff.” Was that a complete lie or bending the truth slightly? She couldn’t decide. She hated lying, but she just couldn’t help herself and now she was stuck with it. “And I can control fire and stuff… set things on fire with my mind.” Now that was a complete lie. In fact she was just telling him what her mom could do because that was so much cooler than being a banshee. LEX CAMERON

━ one click and you are overwritten ━ LEX KINDA WANTED TO BELIEVE HER. HE WASN’T fuckin’ gullible━it wasn’t like he had a shortage of psychic friends━so he wouldn’t just do it, but it’d be cool if another hot chick was a psychic. Not that he’d, like, ever talk to her again after today, but still. Cool. Especially if her powers were useful, then maybe he’d talk to her.
Ghosts, huh? Strike one. Fuck that. What would he ever need with some old-ass, dead-ass person anyway? “Morbid as shit. Go on.” Unwilling to go even a few seconds without making some sort of comment, Lex’s lips twisted into something that resembled a smug smile.
But fire? His brows raised. That was pretty interesting. Totally an offensive power, not as good as, like, getting into people’s minds and shit, but it was pretty alright. Lex nodded, crossing his arms over his chest and tilting his chin up slightly. “So… you’re a psychic?” It wasn’t so much a question as a statement, ‘cause she didn’t seem to know the word, but all signs were pointing that-a-way. “Really,” His eyes narrowed, lips pursing, expression full of disbelief.
“Dope, then. Prove it.” Lex pointed sideways, at a patch of grass on the edge of the sitting area. “Set that little bit of grass on fire. C’mon, it’s dry enough outside that you could totally play it off, and I gave you a demonstration, so now you gotta repay the favour.” He smirked, a challenge in his tone.

Her brows furrowed when he told her seeing dead people was morbid as… every other sentence contained a swear word for Lex. It really wasn’t needed and added absolutely nothing to the conversation, but she kept quiet. Hazel didn’t need another lecture from Lex about her being boring or whatever. Anyway, seeing ghosts could be kinda cool, but that wasn’t really her punchline. Setting things on fire was the best one. She nodded in response to his question, a little too eagerly despite the doubt that filled Lex’s mouth. If she was confident about it he would definitely believe her. “Yeah!” Wow. She was pretty good at this whole lying thing, but even if she gave an Oscar winning performance to her parents they’d see straight through it (well maybe her dad wouldn’t). Her heart skipped a beat when Lex told her to set some grass on fire, beating hard in her chest. Hazel’s eyes darted out to the patch of grass he was referring to. “Well…” She wanted to use her parents as an excuse, telling him they wouldn’t be happy with her using her abilities out in public, but he would shut her down immediately, calling her a baby or something mean. Excuse, excuse, excuse…“It was raining a little last night so it wouldn’t work.” Weak excuse, but it was the best she could come up with. “Maybe another time though and um…” She reached into her pocket, sliding her phone keeping the screen tilted away from Lex’s face. “My mom. I’ve gotta take this call, sorry. Like I said, another time.” She flashed Lex a wide grin before putting the phone to her ear. “Hey mom… yeah sure.” She started to walk away from Lex, giving him a mini wave as she made her way back toward the ice cream parlor. Ugh. Maybe she wasn’t so good at lying after all. LEX CAMERON - the end!
