Tatia had made lots of promises before she died, both to herself and to others. The day her husband died she had promised her son that she would always be there to protect him but she had broken that promise. She had also promised herself that she and Elijah could make a real go of it and could be happy together. She had never thought that she would end up finding happiness again after her husband died but Elijah had slowly helped show her that it was alright to fall in love again. She knew that the others in their village hadn’t approved of the fact that she had decided to live her life for herself and her son rather than following her husband onto his funeral pyre the way that they had all expected her to but as the years went on that judgment had faded and she had eventually been allowed to move on with her life. She had given her heart to Elijah and even though she knew that he had been the one to take her life she couldn’t deny that she still loved him. It didn’t make any sense but she had learned better than to question affairs of the heart a long time ago. As Elijah spoke Tatia knew that he was right, she had been given a second chance to live her life right and she knew that she wasn’t going to take it for granted. She had her son back in her life and she had a safe place to live now, not to mention she had people around her who genuinely seemed to care about her. For the first time since she was brought back to life things seemed to be falling into place and even though this time was so different to the one that she had been born into she was enjoying seeing everything that this new life had to offer and a part of her hoped that she might one day be able to share that with Elijah once more. As he said that he had let the promise he had made to his siblings blind him to so much, Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “That may be true but acknowledging a mistake is the first step towards making things right,” she said gently. “I know it couldn’t have been easy for any of you over the last thousand years but don’t let your past dictate the person you become.” She had learned that the hard way after her husband died, she could have let the things that the other people in their village were saying about her dictate the person that she became but she hadn’t, she had become her own person and she really hoped that Elijah would do the same. No matter what had happened she still believed that he was a good person and she hoped that he would see that one day too. As Elijah spoke again Tatia couldn’t ignore the feeling of dread that was starting to build within her. “What is Niklaus coming here to do, Elijah?” she asked, knowing that if something was going to happen then she needed to know what it was. How did one go about acknowledging a mistake they had denied had even occurred for a thousand years? Elijah knew the delusions he’d lived with had likely been of his mother’s doing but still a part of his brain had kept up that wall, protecting him from the knowledge that he had killed the first woman he had loved. There had been centuries of hatred following their fleeing from Mystic Falls, hatred towards his father for continuing to pursue them, towards his mother for what she had turned them in to. It had taken time to come to terms with the fact that they were immortal creatures, doomed to an eternal life of hunger, almost as long as the time it had taken them to learn to control their impulses in his case. Elijah still wasn’t sure just how much control his siblings had managed to hold on to. Freed from his coffin Kol had a tendency to create chaos, to draw eyes that should not have been upon them for their own safety. Niklaus tended to do something similar, although usually not from a sense of amusement. There would be no amusement once his brother realised that everything he needed to break the spell binding his wolf side was here in this town, along with the opportunity to finally get revenge upon Katerina. All those centuries he had put far less effort into pursuing Katerina than his brother had desired, now that deception would become obvious to Niklaus, along with what he intended to do now.
Dark, troubled eyes narrowed in spite of the comfort he received from the feel of Tatia’s hand in his own. In all likelihood standing between Niklaus and the Petrova doppelgangers in this town would result in him spending centuries in his coffin. Not until he had ensured their safety though, not until he knew Tatia would not lose her life to his brother’s hands. ”Mea culpa,” Elijah murmured, claiming his mistake. He could not excuse it, nothing would ever truly do that, but he could attempt to make penitence. ”It is as difficult to set aside what has happened as it is to see who I will become. A vicious circle, one always feeding the other.” Until now. Until the second chance he never expected would come had appeared in Mystic Falls. A second chance that his brother could snatch away from him and … even if it wasn’t Tatia Niklaus used for the ritual, another young woman would fall. Niklaus was determined to break it in the only way he saw possible. The thought of it had his chest constricting, his heart aching as he spoke ominously. Hearing the tone of Tatia’s voice, Elijah slipped a hand from hers, raised it slowly to skim his fingertips featherlight over a cheek he could still remember every curve of. ”Niklaus wants to break a spell our mother cast upon him. He has spent a thousand years cut off from a part of himself. It is long past time it was freed but the method he wants to use … it cannot be the only way. That way pain lies and I cannot live with watching it be caused yet again.” Failure would not just result in him being sent after Katerina this time. It would be far more brutal, especially as it would mean yet again being parted from the woman beside him.

Tatia had heard about strange things happening close to her home while she was growing up. There had been rumours of witches and magic especially surrounding the Mikaelson family but even before that there had been talk of men who turned into wolves every full moon although Tatia had never really taken much notice of the stories until after Lukas was born. Henrik’s death had changed everything, even children who had thought that hiding in the caves once a month was a game had started taking it a lot more seriously and she knew that was a good thing. What had happened to him was a tragic accident and it was one that should have been avoided. Now she didn’t know whether anyone else had fallen victim to the wolves but she knew better than to dwell on that. She had missed out on so much after she died, she hadn’t been there to see her son or her siblings grow up and start families of their own and she hadn’t been there for Elijah or Niklaus either. Even though she’d had to follow her heart that hadn’t changed the fact that she had cared about Niklaus and she had wanted nothing more than to support the two of them in any way she could. Now she finally had the chance to make things right even if it was perhaps a thousand years too late. Elijah looked like the man she had known back then but there were differences in the way he behaved and that was something that she knew would take some getting used to. He was still the man she had fallen in love with back then, though, and that was something that she really was glad about. He seemed like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders and if there was anything she could do to lighten the load then she would. As Elijah spoke, Tatia studied him carefully for a moment. “Elijah, I don’t know what you have been through or what is t come but I can still see the man I used to know inside of you. You are a good man, Elijah, and I hope that you will do the right thing,” she assured him gently. Before she died he had always seemed to know what the right thing was even when things were difficult. That was something that she had always admired about him and she had a feeling that hadn’t changed. As he let his fingers skim over her cheek Tatia felt her heart skip a beat. Even now knowing what she did about the events that had led to her death she couldn’t deny that Elijah still affected her the same way that he always had done. She would be lying if she said that didn’t scare her a little but she knew that it was just one of those things. As he explained about what Niklaus was up to, Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful. She was sympathetic to what Niklaus was going through, she knew that it couldn’t be easy to be cut off from a part of himself, but Elijah’s words were enough to worry her. “I can’t blame him for wanting to free that side of himself but what pain will he cause to do so?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

The promise made to his family had not only bound the three of them together for centuries but it had also made bringing anybody else into that circle a difficult and on occasion deadly process. Few were trusted enough to be allowed close to the Original family. Granted access to an inner sanctum that few had ever seen the inductees often reacted in one of two ways, attempting to undermine that power, to destroy it from the inside and take it for themselves, or they themselves were destroyed. Almost every single sole he had ever allowed close to him had been killed and Elijah knew he could not let it happen again in Mystic Falls. While the love he had felt for Katerina no longer burned fiercely in quite the same way the guilt he had long felt over what had been done to her did. Five hundred years ago he had failed to entirely save her from his brother. Instead of being allowed to live her human life she had been drawn into the orbit of his family and when the time came for his brother to break the bonds upon his wolf side there had been no escape for her. Katerina had been forced to take her own life and he had been forced to spend his chasing her. If Niklaus got his way in Mystic Falls then more lives would be destroyed. Elijah could feel the weight of Tatia’s gaze upon him as she studied him, could feel the weight of all of those lives upon his conscience. Not just hers, not just Elena’s or Katerina’s but all those who would stand between the Original family and those three women.
Merely being descended from the woman whose blood had been used in that first spell seemed curse enough. He had been forced to watch it three times now and on the first two occasions had felt powerless to stop the destruction his family’s hands could wreak. Elijah’s gaze dropped to the ground for a moment before cutting sidelong at the woman beside him. ”It is all I hope to do here,” he confirmed. ”The promise I made to Niklaus has been stretched thin by his misdeeds long enough. It is time either to repair it or to set it aside. The man you knew has long thought it necessary.” The man she had known was still a faint voice in the back of his mind, trying to guide him back to a path he had long ago stumbled from. With the familiar curve of Tatia’s cheek filling his palm Elijah could almost feel that path growing solid beneath his feet once more. Penitence, he thought, would be his salvation, perhaps theirs too. The last time he had laid his hands upon Tatia in such a way had been in violence, to take her life, now he had come full circle again. Elijah’s throat worked as Tatia asked perhaps the most weighted question possible. He swallowed hard, his chin lifting an inch. ”Blood is a part of the ritual, as it was a part of the first,” he explained. ”Niklaus will take that by force if necessary and will not feel an ounce of guilt for the lives he might destroy to obtain it. My brother is not the man you remember Tatia. Mikael’s torture, running from him for an eternity, it has changed him.” Time and time again he had hoped that the glimpses he saw of the boy Niklaus had been were not merely figments of his own imagination. Surely there was still enough of him that was worth saving.

There was so much about the world that Tatia had yet to learn, she had heard about different places around the world but so far she hadn’t ventured outside of Mystic Falls. Some day she knew that she wanted to see the world but for the time being the truth was that she was happy just getting to live again. She didn’t know who had brought her back to life or why they had done so after a thousand years but at the end of the day no one had shown up wanting anything from her so she knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth. Finding out that Elijah and his family were still alive had been a surprise at first but now she knew that they were vampires it all made sense. Lukas still being alive had been more of a shock, she had been forced to accept that her son would have lived and died without her a long time ago but now she knew that he was still alive and she got to have him be a part of her life once more so she knew just how lucky she was. She was determined to be there for the people she cared about now the way that she should have been able to be there for them all along and as far as she was concerned that included Elijah. He had been the one to take her life from her in the first place but she knew that it wasn’t his fault, his mother had turned her children into the first vampires and control wasn’t something that they had had the chance to learn when she died. She knew that she couldn’t hold it against Elijah, nor did she want to so she knew that it was something that she wanted them both to be able to move on from. As Elijah spoke Tatia brought her hand up and let it rest gently against his cheek. “The man I knew will do what is right, I am certain of it,” she assured him. She didn’t know the misdeeds that Elijah spoke of or the awful things that still haunted him now but she could see glimmers of the man she had fallen in love with buried beneath the surface and she trusted Elijah to do the right thing. As Elijah spoke again Tatia found herself studying him carefully. There were things that he had said that concerned her, blood had been used to bind a side of Niklaus a thousand years ago and blood would be used to unbind that same side now. Elijah had not told her of any other deaths in their village after her own so she knew that there could only be one logical explanation. “Niklaus plans to use my blood, doesn’t he?” she breathed as the pieces fell into place. “Or rather he plans to use Elena’s since he doesn’t know I am alive,” she corrected as she looked to Elijah for confirmation. “He needed to wait for someone who looked like me.” It wasn’t something she even wanted to think about but she knew in her heart that it had to be true. Elijah had learned long ago how dangerous knowledge could prove. He had valued it when he’d been younger, more foolish and idealistic. Gathering together the most curious, eager minds he could find he had tried to create a group that would better society but that had proven deadly. Abandoned by necessity the group had twisted what he had taught them and he had long ago lost count of the number of lives likely lost at their hands. Elijah knew he could not blame himself directly, he had not been the one to lay waste to them all but each life he had effected, each mind that he had changed that had been lost to violence had been another mark on his conscience. Later Celeste and numerous others had followed. Allowed a glimpse beyond the wall that they had built around themselves, made party to the conniving plans of his brother, they had paid a price he did not wish Tatia to pay. She had already lost her life once, had been made to break her promise to a son who had already lost his father. Giving her the knowledge of Niklaus’ plans for her could do the opposite of what he had planned. Elijah trusted Tatia to make a wise decision but would she volunteer herself to save Elena? He wasn’t sure, wasn’t even sure if he would be able to protect her but Elijah knew he had to try, for Tatia’s sake, for Lukas’ sake, for his own for once.
A thousand years of setting aside his own happiness, of watching the suffering of those around them had left him somewhat jaded. He had lost so many, cast them aside for the sake of a vow made to protect his siblings against the man hell bent on slaughtering the monsters his wife had created. Meeting Tatia’s eye as she settled her hand on his cheek Elijah knew that it had happened for the last time. No matter the outcome when it came to his own life, he would not allow Niklaus to take another from him. ”I will believe in your certainty,” he promised hoarsely. It was easier to do so than to trust in his own ability to withstand Niklaus’ temper. Some would have considered his stand against his brother a fool’s errand but it was anything but. Elijah let out a long breath under Tatia’s scrutiny. Her mind had always been sharper than most, she would not blithely remain blind now he had revealed some of the truth. ”My mother always said you were wise beyond your years,” he murmured as he raised his hand to settle his fingers over those on his cheek. ”The blood of someone in your line, one of your doppelgangers, is necessary to break the spell. Your blood was used to create it and only a doppelganger’s blood will help break it. Elena was why I came to this town. I mean to protect her, and you. I would encourage you both to run far from here but I fear that will only draw out this hunt. Niklaus will not stop until he is free.” If that took another five hundred years his brother would still fight for it. If he was thwarted again this time though, Elijah suspected the violence would not merely be aimed at the young woman who had spoiled his plans. All those in his way would pay, including his own siblings. Disturbed by the thought, Elijah pushed his way to his feet. ”I cannot guarantee that Niklaus is not here already. He’s the reason I warned you against lingering in these woods.” He was also one of the reasons he had been lurking out here, watching over her, at least the only one he would admit to himself.

In a way Tatia wished she knew who had brought her back or why they had done so. She knew deep down that there had to be some kind of a bigger reason for it than just wanting to give her a second chance but she knew better than to take the chance that she had been given for granted. She finally had the opportunity to make things right with her son and now it seemed like she and Elijah might get the chance to be a part of each other’s lives once more as well. So much had happened between the two of them and learning that he was the one responsible for taking her life a thousand years ago had been a lot to take in but she had met other vampires since then and she had seen how difficult it was for some of them to stay in control so she knew that she had to give him a second chance. Even though he had lived countless lifetimes without her she still cared about him and seeing what he was going through now she knew that she wanted to be there for him in any way that she could. She wasn’t naive enough to think that they could pick up where they had left off but the truth was that she could still see the Elijah that she had fallen in love with in there somewhere and that man was someone that she knew she didn’t want to lose from her life. A part of her wished she knew everything that Elijah had been through since she died but deep down she knew that she was probably better off not knowing. Still, she trusted him to share the important things with her even if it did end up taking time. Since they had found each other again he had seemed to want to do nothing more than keep her safe and even though she was certain that she could look after herself she couldn’t deny that it was nice knowing that there was someone else out there who had her back. As he said that his mother had always told him that she was wise beyond her years a half smile tugged at the corner of her mouth but if she was honest she wasn’t surprised to learn that her suspicions were correct. “I have to warn Stefan, he needs to know the danger that Elena is in,” she breathed. They had both been so good to her and she knew that she owed it to them to do what she could to help. “She is so young, Elijah, younger than I. She cannot become a pawn in Niklaus’ plan, she deserves the chance to live. Promise me that you will keep her safe no matter what,” she said, meeting his gaze levelly as a sense of calm washed over her. “If it comes down to it when the time comes I will hand myself over to Niklaus. No more innocent blood shall be spilt because of something that started with me a thousand years ago,” she muttered, more to herself than to Elijah. She did not wish to die again especially after finally being reunited with Lukas and Elijah but she knew that if it came down to a choice between her and Elena then there really was no question in it. Violence between the Mikaelson siblings wasn’t unknown. Over the centuries they had flown at one another, moral arguments, petty disagreements, spilling over into physical fights. Niklaus in particular had a tendency towards such things, the daggers, the boxes he would place them in on a whim, his favourite toys. It was easy to picture his brother’s visit to the town ending that way, blood left running in the streets, all of them carried out of there in his brother’s wake. Elijah knew that if Niklaus were set on such a method there would be little that he could do to sway him but at the very least … if he could leave Tatia, Katherine and Elena behind, safe and alive, well as alive as she had been in five hundred years in Katherine’s case, the sacrifice would be worth it. Offered this once more, the human life he should have had with the woman he had loved, it would near kill him to be forced to leave, especially since Tatia could once again be long dead by the time he awoke but the alternative would kill him just as surely. The memory of cradling Tatia’s dead body in his arms was too fresh in his mind, the grief that had crippled him to the point where his mother had needed to lock the memories away too heavy for his heart to bear a second time. Between them they could surely do this, find another way or just stop his brother in his tracks if necessary. The freeing of Niklaus werewolf side was not worth this price, not even if they had to spend another thousand years fleeing those who pursued them.
It would have perhaps been kinder to keep Tatia in the dark about what was coming but she had always possessed a keen intellect, one unusual in a time where women were so often viewed as little more than a man’s property. He was not surprised when she could see through his words to the truth beyond their eloquent disguise. Elijah felt something in his heart tug almost painfully at the thought of what had been. He met Tatia’s half smile with a brief shake of his head, a faint squeeze of the fingers his hand covered on his cheek. ”Let me warn him,” he cautioned her. ”Trust me, I will not let him go in to this blindly.” The thought of just how young and naïve Elena was, younger than either Tatia or Katherine had been when they had been drawn into his family’s deadly orbit had Elijah’s expression sobering. His mouth pinched, his gaze dropping for a moment before it rose once more to meet hers fiercely. ”I will do everything in my power to protect her. I promise I will do all that I can, she has my oath and my life if it is needed to stop what he intends.” The fierce look at had been in his eye just moments before began to burn brighter at the words that heedlessly fell from Tatia’s lips. Elijah dropped his hand away from hers, closing it around her upper arm in emphasis. ”I cannot let that happen. Your blood was shed once, by my mother and by the man who loves you. I can’t lose you like that again. If anyone is to give their life here it will be me and I will take Niklaus with me.” If it was the only way then he would do it. A life with Tatia in exchange for a death that kept her safe, he knew which he would prefer, he also knew which he could willingly do.

For a long time now Tatia had known that there was something brewing in Mystic Falls. She could see that Stefan and Elena were worried about something and no matter how hard they tried to keep it from her she had still seen the far off looks in their eyes when they had thought that she wasn’t looking. Whatever was coming was something big and she knew that they were trying to get to the bottom of what that was but it seemed like Elijah was the one person who had the answers they needed. She knew that she could have gone straight back to the Boarding House and told the two of them what was really going on but she had trusted Elijah with not just her life but that of her son once upon a time and she still trusted him with both of those things now just like she trusted him with Elena’s. It was clear that he had changed, a thousand years had passed since she had died so she knew that she couldn’t even begin to imagine the horrors that he had faced during that time but deep down the Elijah she had fallen in love with still lived. She had caught glimpses of that man now and then during their time together and she honestly hoped that he would do the right thing when the time came. As Elijah insisted that she let him warn Stefan, Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment before she nodded. “Fine but if you have not told him by the end of the week then I will, Elijah. He and Elena have been good to me, they deserve to know what they are up against,” she warned. She knew that she couldn’t keep what Elijah had told her to herself for too long, there were lives at stake and she refused to let Elena’s be cut short the same way that hers had been all those years ago. A part of her couldn’t help but wonder if those of her bloodline were cursed, Katherine had become a vampire at a young age too from what she could gather and Lukas had experienced so much loss both before and after he made himself immortal. She didn’t know that much about what Elena had been through in the past but the last thing she wanted was for anything bad to befall her. As he vowed to protect Elena, Tatia nodded. “Thank you Elijah. I hope it will not come to that but I am glad that Elena has someone else to look out for her.” Between Stefan and Elijah as well as Elena’s friends and family she had a feeling that the girl was in pretty good hands. Tatia was a little surprised when Elijah’s grip shifted so that he was grasping her upper arm but her gaze was steady as her eyes met his. “I do not doubt the strength of your conviction, Elijah, but no matter what Niklaus has done or is about to do he is your brother and I would not wish for you to have that guilt on your conscience,” she assured him gently. “I hope we will find a way to stop Niklaus’ plan as I do not want to leave you or Lukas for a second time but if it comes down to a choice between whether it should be my life or Elena’s that is taken then there is no contest. She has so much she has yet to do and I would not be able to live with myself knowing that I had not done everything I could to protect her, even if that means giving up my own life,” she said, hoping that he would understand. “It is getting late Elijah, I should go. I hope that I will see you again soon,” she said, pressing a kiss to his cheek before turning and making her way back through the woods towards the Boarding House. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Ultimatums rarely ended well when a Mikaelson was on the receiving end. A thousand year old family, impervious to everything but the white oak tree that had stood on the land they had once called home, powerful, proud, bound to one another by a seemingly unbreakable vow. There were few who would toy with them let alone try and dictate terms to them. If Niklaus set himself upon a path then there was no dissuading him from it. He meant to come to Mystic Falls, meant to kill a doppelganger, a vampire and a wolf, to break the bond upon him and a part of him doubted that even his best efforts would prevent his brother from going ahead. Elijah knew he could’ve stood before Niklaus for the first time in years and refused to allow the ritual to go ahead but that would simply result in a trip to the coffin, one that would likely last centuries for him. Betrayal was something his brother had never dealt with, especially when hearts had been involved. Twice he had bound Rebekah to her coffin simply for falling for another and planning to leave her brother behind. Going into this Elijah was aware that it would likely not end well for him but he would do anything to keep the woman who had been returned to him safe. He would sacrifice himself to ensure that Elena, Tatia and even Katherine came out of this alive, he would agree to Tatia’s ultimatum and suffer a dozen lifetimes in the living hell of the coffin. For her, for Tatia to live.
Promises rarely came easily, especially when he was not certain he would be able to keep them but he had given his word now to inform Stefan Salvatore of what was approaching. He would not break his word, would not allow the younger vampire to walk in to this with his eyes shut. Niklaus would merely see an opportunity to break those who dared to stand before him and deny him his wish. ”You have my word,” Elijah vowed, a firm not to his voice as he dropped his hand to settle his fingers over his heart. ”They will be warned and I will do what I can to protect them.” His main concern would be the women. As much as he would protect them all if possible the doppelgangers were the most vulnerable here. Katherine had the strength and resilience being a vampire could provide but in comparison to the Original family she might as well have been as human as the others. Once she had been a young girl, like Elena, like Tatia, and then she had been drawn into his family’s circle. It was a deadly position, one that had cost her a human life. His mouth tight, Elijah nodded at Tatia’s words. Unfortunately he knew that it would most certainly come to that, Niklaus was on his way and this time the elements for this ritual were practically within his grasp already.
His heart contracted painfully in his chest at the thought of what he could lose in it. ”It is better that the both of us die than you be lost again,” Elijah said firmly. ”I made you break your promise to Lukas once, I will not do it again. I know you wish to protect her, I feel the same towards the girl, but given the choice…” He would be Solomon, on the brink of dividing the baby in two. Elijah was tempted to labour the point, to let the grief already welling within burst forth to convince Tatia that he could not survive another loss but as she began to withdraw with cold comfort offered in her words Elijah let his hand fall away. ”Do not linger on your way home. Stay safe.” The words were hoarse, his voice choking off at the familiar feel of Tatia’s lips upon his cheek. Elijah turned as she made her way away from him, dark eyes tracking her progress through the woods even as his heart was gripped with that pang of impending grief once more. For the first time in a thousand years he would have to truly break the vow, for all of their sakes, to save Niklaus’ from himself. Swallowing hard Elijah turned away, began to make his way back to the car he’d parked a mile away, there was much to prepare for before Niklaus’ arrival.
