━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ THIS WEEK’S SERMON WAS focused on John fifteen. There was a lot to unpack in that chapter (as there was in each chapter, obviously), but specifically now, about love and trimming away branches to make room for the fruit. Like the rest of the Bible, it was a metaphor, and Freyja’s mind kept drifting to her own life. All the branches she’d trimmed and maintained throughout her life, making room for all the new ones created with Theo. Hazel━sitting just on the other side of Theo━probably counted as a flower. Or fruit. Whatever the metaphor was. It didn’t matter; all that did was that Freyja was incredibly thankful for all of this.
She’d been praying for a safe, healthy pregnancy since she found out. Their doctor said everything was going well, their newest addition was right on track, and she’d slipped into her second trimester without a hitch. It wasn’t as scary this time around, especially not when her partner━husband━was alive for the whole of it. And he wasn’t going anywhere, especially not when Freyja barely let go of his hand most of the time.
Exercising her right to cling to him now, Freyja clutched Theo’s palm while the three of them slipped out of Church━after the obligatory snacks and small talk, of course. Her parents were always ten times better at the socializing part of Church than she was, and now she had Theo to lean on while the old ladies doddered and everybody did their weekly catch-up with one another.
“This is the last time we don’t have a full breakfast ‘fore Church,” Freyja grumbled, only releasing Theo’s hand to make her way to the passenger’s side of their family vehicle. Later, they were supposed to have a Sunday Dinner (she couldn’t wait that long to eat) and host Frank, Kit and whoever they decided to drag along this time. That place was practically a fucking hostel.
Okay. Branches. Fruit. Thankful. It wasn’t even that bad; she was just hungry.
“Did we not bring snacks? I swore I threw a couple granola bars in here…” It was one of those mom habits she’d picked up, always having snacks in her purse. Freyja pulled open the door to the SUV and paused, not yet getting in, rifling through her bag. She hated these things. She wished she could carry everything in her pockets. “Ah, shit. Shoot.” She corrected quickly, “I left my phone on the bench. One second,” Only an idiot would steal someone’s personal belongings in Church and, honestly, Freyja didn’t give a whole lot of shoots about her phone. It was only important when she had to contact Theo or Hazel.
Letting the car door swing shut, Freyja worked her way through the small crowd and back into the Church. Her phone had been picked up by one of the ladies who’d done a sweep through after everybody left━which meant Freyja got stuck in another round of chitty-chat.
Fleeing after a polite amount of time, she rushed to the large doors and out into the warm May sunshine, blinding but so warm and delicious that she felt a little like a plant beginning to photosynthesize. It was incredibly bright, apparently, because she nearly ran smack-dab into some long-haired man at the base of the stairs. “Fuck━” Halting so fast she nearly skidded through the gravel, Freyja’s eyes widened, one hand jumping up to cover her mouth. “I mean━uh, sorry.” She laughed sheepishly. It was always worse when someone else heard you swearing in Church. “I didn’t see ya, too busy enjoying the sun. It’s finally gettin’ warm out, huh?” Freyja laughed lightly, hoping she wouldn’t get caught for too long. She might just gnaw off her own arm.

The town was heading into summer, yet wherever the hell Raik was constantly feeling cold. There was so much he missed about being alive that he couldn’t even begin to list them off, but most of all he missed human connection. Feeling someone else’s touch on his skin or wrapping his arms around his loved ones for a hug. Instead he was left speaking with Leah, one of his least favourite people in the world. He should have known this whole mess had something to do with her. He’d spent hours watching his brother crumple in the world of the living. Grieving the loss of his sibling, knowing that he was partly to blame for it all. Raik hadn’t reached a point where he felt he could forgive Remzi though. It was hard watching Remzi cry, knowing he couldn’t reach out and hug Remzi, but it still didn’t wash away the fact the reason Raik was dead was because of Remzi and Leah. He desperately wanted to forgive Remzi, but each time he was reminded that his life had been taken away from him. He hadn’t got to experience all the things he wanted. Finding his soulmate, getting married, starting a family. Fuck he hadn’t even gone scuba diving or jumped out of a plane. There was a real chance he’d never get to do those things too, but Leah promised him she would bring him back to life. Of course he didn’t believe her but what else could he do? He was left wandering the streets of Mystic Falls. Alone. Every now and then she’d come and check up on him, but he’d rather spend his days in silence than speak to her. He saw a flash of guilt on her face when she found his body though and he’d watched from afar when she broke the news to Remzi. Raik had spent years trying to steer his brother towards another life, but in the end it got him killed. If he was saved from limbo then he was done trying to save Remzi. What hurt the most was the fact his body was lying in a fucking freezer in some seedy bar in town and his parents hadn’t even been told he was dead. They were none the wiser in Detroit, believing their eldest was making the most of life down in Virginia. He wanted to see them but had no idea how to get there. He couldn’t exactly jump on a plane or drive. He was stuck in Mystic Falls until Leah decided to let him pass to wherever he was destined to be. Raik had even tried to find another reaper to take him there but failed. Did he even want to be brought back? He craved peace after his hectic life. All adult responsibilities would simply fade away and he could find happiness in the afterlife. It was selfish of him to think like that, knowing Remzi was struggling with the grief, but Raik had spent much of his life putting his brother’s needs before his own. Again, it got him killed. Raik still didn’t fully understand what happened that evening in the hotel room. Leah explained it to him in pieces, but none of it made sense to him. In those early years, he thought he’d be blown to pieces out on the field. He never thought he’d be murdered. Mystic Falls didn’t have any mosques, only a few churches dotted around. It was the second-best thing. He lingered outside the doors as the sermon took place, but was hesitant to head inside. What if someone happened when a ghost entered a place of religion? He looked up at the building, with a sad look resting on his face. Memories of when he used to go to the mosque with his parents and Remzi. Raik would listen intently, whilst Remzi would be busy playing with his toy car. Usually bothering the person in front by running it over the head and back before their mom snatched it away, telling him to behave. The boys would then break into a grin, trying to suppress their laughter. He quickly moved out of the way as people started to leave the church, as though they could collide with him. Once the crowd started to die down he made the decision to head inside. Maybe the ground would swallow him whole, but that would be better than this cold empty world he was floating around in. He spotted another blonde coming out of the church, racing down the stairs before she stopped dead in front of him, making eye contact with him. Shit, she was speaking to him. Raik glanced backwards, there was no one behind him. “How the fuck can you see me?” His mouth hung open, in disbelief. FREYJA DAMASCA

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ IT WASN’T THE FIRST time she didn’t immediately realize she was talking to a ghost. Of course, when she was little, it happened all the time, but since she’d learned to train her ability, it wasn’t so bad anymore. She didn’t realize the first time she’d seen Theo’s ghost that he wasn’t solid━Freyja was way too angry to see anything but red. And now, the sun blinded her.
She didn’t see the man’s hazy aura.
Or the slight transparency to his body.
Nothing that would’ve alerted her to cease engaging.
By the time she’d skidded to a stop, even before the curse left her mouth, it was too late. He’d noticed, and Freyja didn’t understand what was happening until he spoke. Freyja lifted a hand and pressed its edge to her forehead like a visor to block the sun, green eyes squinting at him. That’s when she saw it, noticed him, and all the friendly pleasantries on her face fell. It felt like they dropped down her throat, through her chest and sat heavily in the pit of her stomach. Freyja tensed, glancing once at the vehicle filled with her waiting family, then back to him.
She’d taught herself to ignore them because they could get pushy and desperate, asking for a million favours she couldn’t possibly keep up with. But she would be a hypocrite after Theo, and just one ghost outside of Church… well, it was almost fated, right? Like God was telling her to help.
Her knee-jerk reaction was to tell the guy to watch his language, they were on Church grounds after all, but she swallowed it. He wasn’t her kid, and she’d said the same thing not a moment before. “I can see ghosts.” Freyja stated simply, “Always could. Were you… goin’ inside?” She stepped to one side, clearing the way for him━he could go right through her, of course, but Freyja didn’t want to feel that bone-deep chill. “Prayin’ for a loved one, or…?” There had to be a reason he was stuck here, and while Freyja wanted to scoot away without offering help, she figured she’d talk down his excitement before scuttling away.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to swear at you. I was taken back.” The ‘fuck’ rolled out of his mouth with ease. There was a time when you wouldn’t catch Raik uttering many swear words, especially not standing in front of a place of worship, but now they had slotted themselves into his everyday vocabulary. It was just another habit that he’d picked up from his brother, along with many other questionable things, such as drinking during the day or hooking up with random women he met in nightclubs. At first it was fun, but when Remzi died it put everything in perspective for Raik. They weren’t teenagers anymore, they were adults. In some way, it didn’t seem fair that Remzi had been given a second chance at life, but Raik hadn’t. It was typical though. His brother had been given non-stop second chances throughout his life. Someone somewhere was always willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile, Raik was the one who was studying hard and trying his damn best to get a good job so he could make a life for himself and his future family. All those high school parties he turned down because he was studying, all that gruelling training he went through to join the military. It all seemed pointless now. Remzi still had his entire life in front of him. A long immortal life with no expiry date. Raik would have to stand behind the veil and watch. Bitter and jealous. He couldn’t even bring himself to watch over Remzi anymore. Drinking and fucking his way through the grief, which didn’t even surprise Raik. He wanted to get out of Mystic Falls and back to his parents, but he had no idea how to get back there. Leah was vague on the details, leaving Raik with the impression that she didn’t know herself. Would he just walk there? Hitch a ride with some unknowing stranger? The town now brought him nothing but sorrow. At least in Detroit, he could watch over his parents. Happy and completely unaware their sons were dead. “I, um… honestly I don't know what I'm doing.” Would Allah even hear the prayers of a dead person? He could spend hours kneeling down, praying for his brother, but Remzi had crossed a line when he killed those girls on Halloween. An unforgivable act. “I’m not here to pray, just passing time… I’ve been religious my entire life but my belief is being tested right now… asking myself why I was killed at the age of thirty-four when I had so much more I wanted to do with my life.” He paused, letting out a nervous chuckle, “Sorry. I didn’t mean to put my thoughts on you like that.” It had been a few days since he’d interacted with Leah, “Do you see many ghosts walking around Mystic Falls?”FREYJA DAMASCA

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ WHILE IT WAS RISKY TO ACKNOWLEDGE GHOSTS AND start chatting with them, Freyja found that, if they hadn’t been dead long enough to go crazy, they usually just wanted someone to listen. She didn’t always have the time or patience for it, but her grandma had instilled their mutual ability’s importance. They were blessed with this specific power, and it was meant to be used. In any way she could, Freyja was supposed to help.
A lot of the time, their manner of death also affected their behaviour in the afterlife. Angry ghosts had often died violently and sought vengeance, and those taken by or from their loved ones usually cried endlessly. She thought of Theo again, a knot forming in her gut━the same one that was being squished and rearranged by her growing baby.
Slowly, Freyja moved to face him again, no longer worried about getting in his way. She furrowed her brow, letting the confusion wash over her features. Why was he here then? Did he simply find comfort in the House of God? She supposed she couldn’t fault him for that.
Apparently, he was just as confused as she was. Lost, listless as a ghost, and though she didn’t understand, she was sympathetic to him. “No, s’alright. I figure it’s been a while since you could talk to anyone. I’m all ears.” Freyja smiled warmly, “I know it’s hard. Not first-hand, but my husband…” She glanced toward the car, though figured it was better not to give him false hope. “And it seems… shitty to tell ya it’s all part of God’s Plan, but it is. None of us will know why, but maybe acceptin’ that will help ya get t’Heaven.” Her hands slid slowly over her belly, palms pressed to the bottom curve.
“I do, surprisingly.” She nodded, “Usually I can tell the difference, a lot of the time there’ll be a ghost standin’ over someone they know, cryin’ and yellin’ at ‘em, and the person just keeps walking. I couldn’t see with you, though, ‘cause of the sun.” Freyja motioned to the big, blazing heat source, at full strength now. “Sometimes they ain’t friendly, but you don’t seem so bad.” She laughed lightly, “I’m… assumin’ it wasn’t too long ago? Do ya… uh,” Was there a delicate way to put this? “Sorry, you said you were killed? Is there… a tip of some kind ya want me to pass on? That might help you find peace, too. Y’know, settling a case, retribution and all.”

It was a relief to speak to someone who wasn’t Leah. He had been thrown into his own personal hell when he died. A place where the only person he could speak to was the person he hated the most. He’d never been able to understand what his brother saw in her. At first he understood he was sleeping with her because she was good-looking, but now he was left wondering why the hell Remzi was keeping her in his life. Usually he would have kicked them out the following morning, with false promises about calling them, but not Leah. Sometimes he would sit for days, watching everyone around him without uttering a single word. He’d come to realise no matter how loud he shouted the living wouldn’t hear him. Those days following his death he would try every means possible to communicate with his brother, but it never worked. Every object he tried to touch his hand would go straight through and every noise he made went unheard. As the days drew on he was losing hope but there was no sign of another reaper to take him to wherever he was supposed to be. The loneliness was crippling and there was nothing he could do to fill his time. It wasn’t as if he could lie down and sleep to pass the time. How was all this plan of God’s plan? To have his throat slit and strangled. It was difficult to accept this was the route his life was supposed to take. If she’d lost a loved one he was certain she wouldn’t be giving herself the same speech. “I can’t get to heaven until I find a reaper to take me there… I’m stuck here until then.” It wasn’t about accepting. If someone else had turned up in that hotel room he would have been elsewhere by now. His eyes drifted down to her stomach for a second before returning to her face. Just another thing in life he wasn’t going to experience, to watch the woman he loved giving birth to their child. Holding his child for the first time, watching them take their first steps, hearing their first word. “Congratulations.” Despite the slight jealousy he was feeling he broke into a wide smile. Raik glanced up at the sun as she gestured towards it. He’d been one of those people standing over Remzi crying and screaming at him to see him. If he was alone Remzi would sometimes cry as well. Those moments were the hardest, knowing if he reached to hug his brother it wouldn’t be felt. “Yeah I can imagine some of them are angry that they’re dead.” He still experienced waves of rage every now and then. “Last month.” A whole month of being deprived of human contact. A whole month watching his brother break down whenever he was alone. This was his chance to have the finger pointed at Leah’s half-brother and his girlfriend, but he didn’t want another person to be dragged into the mess Leah had started. There was no body to be found and Remzi would probably tell the cops Raik had gone back home. “I have no idea who killed me… but…” HE wasn’t sure how much he could share with this stranger, but he didn’t particularly care either. If Leah was around she would have pulled him away from the woman by now. “It’s being dealt with by someone… this girl we know who’s a reaper said she’s sorting it and tells me she can find a way to bring me back to life.” He let out a weak laugh, knowing that the promise was unrealistic. ━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ A REAPER. “OH,” FREYJA’S VOICE WAS GENTLE, SO was the smile she pasted on, forgetting all about reapers and their tasks. They’d asked Cory a little about it at the start, but Freyja soon got the impression that it wasn’t the happiest job in the world, and so she stopped. Perhaps acceptance would help him not be here anymore, because obviously he wasn’t willing to go with a reaper.
She was so happy Theo hadn’t. Maybe it was high time Freyja quit trying to push it on this guy. Clearly, he had loved ones here that he wanted to stay with, and she could appreciate that. She hadn’t wanted to let Bo leave, either.
“Thank you.” Freyja mumbled, dragging both palms over her belly in a light rub. The polite smile was back. It felt odd accepting a congratulations for life from a ghost, but she supposed dying didn’t wipe away social expectations━not at first, anyway. A month. He’d only been gone for a month━it was fresh enough to be scary, and yet he was likely growing used to it. Doing the same things over and over again, not able to interact with anyone… except for random strangers outside of Churches. “I’m sorry.” She added, and she was. She meant it. It wasn’t fair that he’d been taken so early, and so violently, and now he couldn’t even tell her who’d done this to him. He’d get no justice.
Another reaper━that wasn’t anything to smile about, but Freyja did anyway, blowing out a long breath. “Okay. Yeah. That’s good.” She nodded. “That’s how my husband came back, too. A reaper. I’m sure she’ll be able to sort it out for ya.” Freyja nodded, her chest swelling with hope for the stranger. “Don’t worry, you’ll━” She stopped suddenly, cut off by Theo calling concerns from the car.
Freyja turned her head to him, yelling, “Yeah, I’ll just be a minute!” Before giving her attention back to the ghost. “Hey, if ya need someone to chat with while ya wait for your reaper to get ‘er ducks in a row, I’ll be here every Sunday after the service.” She lifted a hand to squeeze his arm, but realized she’d go right through him, and instead swerved the movement just in time to give him a little wave. “Was nice meetin’ ya. And good luck,” Freyja turned, moving back to the car to reunite with her family, knowing she’d have to tell Theo all about it later.
