16th April 1354 London was nothing but a plague-infested city by now with corpses littering the streets and a stench that filled the air. Food supply was running low unless they chose to bite the infected. They couldn’t catch the Black Death, but watching a human cough up their insides with rotting limbs was not appealing. First, they had been forced south by famine, now they were being forced out of the city by something worse. The vampires were starving and agreed to meet at the port in a week to head off to France in search of something better. Hector was to head east of the city whereas Nicholas chose to head west in the hopes of finding a healthy village somewhere. The pair had been glued at the hip since Nicholas turned Hector. Thankfully his sire wasn’t the type to turn someone and throw them out in the world to figure shit out alone. He was there when Hector woke in transition and explained everything to him. Nicholas found him when he was hours away from succumbing to Typhoid and saved him from inevitable death. There were deer and other wild animals about, but they would only curb his cravings for so long. He was a relatively new vampire and the need to drink human blood was strong, but there was no sign of any humans. Eventually, Hector spotted a fire burning brightly in a hamlet, turning his horse to head down into the valley. It was quiet, which quickly shot down Hector’s high hopes until the scent of blood hit his nose. He slowly walked forward, eyes darting around looking for someone. He reached a small house, the door was already ajar. He pushed it open with a loud creak and edged forward, realising he could enter without invitation. The scent of blood was even stronger and within seconds he saw bodies lying on the floor. He lowered himself to the floor to get a better look. Puncture wounds on their necks and blood seeping into the clay floor. Hector stood up quickly, stepping back as he did so. Nicholas told him there were other vampires out there, but not many. The woman’s voice from behind caught him off guard, begging him not to hurt her as she emerged from a cupboard. Hector wasn’t really paying attention to her story about a monster killing her family, all he could focus on was her racing heart. He darted forward, grabbing the woman by the shoulders. “You are the first human I have seen in days. Please stay still, do not scream.” There was a moment of hesitation, but the hunger was driving him as he pierced her skin with his teeth. The woman stood no chance out there and death would come for her, but he didn’t want to be the one who ended her life. Control was key to surviving. He pulled back, steadying the swaying stranger. “Run. Do not look back.” He removed his hands from the woman as she rushed towards the door but as she was leaving she collided with another male. ━ evil notions come free ━ MAGNUS FELT PAIN EVERY time he moved. With each waking moment, he thought of her. He knew there was an alternative, halting his humanity to cease the pain, but he wanted to feel this. He was nearly seventy and he hadn’t had his heart broken before━what kind of life was that? There were women in the castle, commoners from other towns, but there were none like Philippa, and it felt as though none would come after her. He couldn’t lend his heart out again━she was a vicious bitch, but God did he love her. Enough to abandon Kaegan (the best friend whose children were like his nephews, who already had a wife who’d passed), Edward (the man who was like a son until Magnus greedily took the boy’s wife), the child he’d fathered with Philippa, and his duty as a Knight. He couldn’t stand to be anywhere near what was once home for them.
Even with the supposed plague, Magnus was ripping through any human he could find━anyone who dared to have a beating heart in his presence. Their sickness wouldn’t touch him, and though it made their blood taste less-than-favourable, he wasn’t after them for the way they tasted. He liked the chase, how they screamed and thrashed around in his arms, and he liked━most of all━to feel their life bleed away and into him.
He could not die, not unless one was fast enough or brave enough to drive a stake through him the way they had Philippa, and so he enjoyed causing hundreds of deaths instead. It made him feel closer to Philippa in a strange, sick way. But what wasn’t sick or strange about this? He was a monster who fed on blood to stay alive. Morals didn’t matter anymore; Magnus was happy to have his control slip away.
Tearing through the hamlet on a whim, Magnus drained each body he found in the little wooden houses. In his frenzy, however, he’d missed one. He hadn’t listened hard enough for the quick pitter-patter of her heart buried in a cupboard; Magnus had merely been focused on the following home only a short distance away━it was filled with more bodies. He could hear them shuffling around, sacks of blood on two legs, ripe for the taking━meaningless except for his enjoyment.
Emptying the next dwelling of all life, he almost didn’t go back. However, he’d been just in time to watch a man tread into the last home, and mistook the man for another human. There was no point in letting him go to waste, right? Not when he’d also be a witness━it was merely strategy.
However, as soon as Magnus walked to the threshold of the home and ran straight into one remaining woman, he realized what had happened. The man was a vampire, and not only that, but he was planning to let the straggler go free. She gasped as soon as her eyes met Magnus’, though she wasn’t alive for much longer. He grabbed her jaw and bent her neck, baring it to him and sinking his teeth into the exposed skin. She was drained in moments, dropping lifelessly to the floor━he let her drop without care or concern. With a satisfied, bloody smirk, Magnus’ dark eyes ticked up to the man’s and slowly returned to their natural blue colour.
“You’d let a perfectly fine meal run free that way? What a terrible waste.” He chuckled darkly, motioning to the dead woman on the floor, now joining the rest of her family. “Ah, she won’t be a waste any longer, so I suppose it does not matter in either regard.”

Once he hit the road it was tempting to head north, to Yorkshire, we see what had become of his home, but he wasn’t ready to start feeling nostalgic. Anyone familiar would have been gone by now, including his parents. They’d have been lucky to make it to forty, although Hector didn’t cast much thought to them since leaving Yorkshire. Just like they probably didn’t shed too many tears over his ‘death.’ The son they didn’t raise because they had enough money to hire a nanny then send him to live with another family at the age of eight. Now they were six feet under, where Hector should have been. This new life was a complicated one. Whilst he was grateful to be saved from death, he was now left to live his life as something else. The heightened emotions could be overwhelming at times and the hunger never subsided. This was the first time he had ventured away from Nicholas and there was a part of him worried he’d drain and kill every human he saw because there was no one there to stop him. The voice of reasoning was exploring another part of the country, seeking fresh blood as well. The woman was proof he could control it. Pulling away before it was too late and telling her to run out into the wild where something else would take her life. He’d gone too far with a few humans over the decades and each time he was left filled with regret and remorse. There was a time in his life when he was protecting these people, making sure they were safe. Nicholas calmed him down every single time, telling him all vampires kill someone at some point. The human didn’t make it far. In fact, she didn’t even make it out of the house before the stranger killed her. The dark eyes, the veins, the fangs. She dropped to the floor with a thud as Hector sighed heavily. “Bloody hell. The human race is declining rapidly as it is without the likes of us adding to the numbers.” His eyes fell down to the bodies on the floor, a slight look of disgust on his face “I guess this is your handy work?” His eyes ticked up to the male, “Some of these look riddled with the plague.” Talk about kicking a man whilst he’s down. “Who are you?”MAGNUS DAYNE

━ evil notions come free ━ MAGNUS HAD NEVER BEEN an anti-social man. One would often find him enjoying a drink in his younger years━as was to be expected━but he was always more focused on his job and the call of duty. Looking after a young prince didn’t exactly leave much time for pleasantries.
However, that didn’t mean he wasn’t often in the company of others. He loved spending time with Kaegan and Johanna, especially after his parents died and they became his only family. Philippa… well, she wasn’t the settling-down sort. Especially not when she was already married. In any case, this all changed after her death. Magnus fled because he wanted to be alone, and so even if this man was like him━a lonesome vampire traveller━he wasn’t going to stick around. Magnus wasn’t interested in being friendly… as demonstrated by the murder of the last remaining survivor.
“Plagues come and go; ‘umans build up a tolerance an’ rebuild their numbers. Until then, we are able to feed freely, as all death tolls blend together.” His eyes, too bright for what he was or how he felt, drifted slowly over the family. “They were death with or without my intervention.” He added quietly, mostly to himself. It wasn’t untrue, and yet it didn’t make Magnus feel any better.
He battled with whether it was smart to reveal himself to the stranger. The man didn’t seem keen on Magnus’ actions, but what would he do? Run to tell others that this family had died prematurely? They would arrive and see proof of the illness affecting everyone and decide it wasn’t worth their time to investigate.
He hadn’t forgotten his manners, either. He didn’t want a companion, but he wasn’t about to sour this entire interaction. “Sir Magnus Dayne.” He said out of habit and stepped forward, over the girl’s body, to extend an arm. “... Err, formerly a Knight, I would say. And you?”

He’d been told about savage vampires that roamed the earth. The ones who had little care for human life and took joy in taking every last drop of blood from blood. He could never become one of them. The type that hunted for fun and wore a smile on their face as their victim hits the floor. Like the gentleman standing in front of him who didn’t think twice before slaughtering the woman. To make matters worse he was prepared to leave the bodies of his previous victims strewn on the floor for anyone to find, adding to the hysteria that had already been caused by the plague. Next, there would be a rumour the disease infected your mind and turned you into a cannibal of some sort. Death would come for the woman soon, but this man had snatched away her chance of trying to live for a little longer. “I do not know how long you have been alive but for me, this is the deadliest plague I have witnessed… almost every village I passed on my way here has perished.” In his hometown he watched as people succumb to famine, but at least that wasn’t contagious. “Each to their own but…” Again he looked down at the humans on the floor with a look of repulsion on his face. Nicholas assured him vampires could not catch any disease, but they didn’t look appetizing. Hector’s eyes shot up towards the man as he introduced himself, an arm extended outwards for him to take. He reached forward, locking his hand with Magnus and shaking it firmly. “Sir Hector Dacre. Also a former Knight.” He dropped Magnus's hand, trying to forget about the woman on the floor whose blood was now seeping into the wood below. The smell was distracting. “Although I was only a Knight for a few years until I died… I suspect you were a Knight for a lot longer than me.” There was a slight smirk twitching on his face, “Are you a new vampire or…” MAGNUS DAYNE

━ evil notions come free ━ FROM PHILIPPA━WHOSE “SCHOOLING” CONSISTED MOSTLY of sharing victims━he’d learned that age was a vampire’s best skill, and their greatest defence against others like them. If this stranger thought Magnus was older, he’d consider him a larger threat and would be less likely to challenge Magnus. So, instead of stating his age, Magnus merely shrugged, his expression showing indifference. “Yes, it’s deadly, and yes, many ‘ave perished but this plague won’t end ‘umanity as we know it. Every few ‘undred years, God wipes it all clean and starts again. The real sin is that we don’t die as easily.” Vampires, he meant. They were a plague in and of themselves, and all he wished, most days, was to be with his beloved Philippa. “The lucky and the wealthy will live. Nothin’ matters when ya exist as a demon; like us.”
Sure, his victims were ugly and dying, riddled with signs of their ailment, but they tasted the same as any other.
Finally introducing himself, Magnus was somewhat pleased that the man chose to take his hand instead of allowing their difference of opinion to snowball into a violent encounter. Magnus was stuck somewhere between wishing for death and craving a new life.
Another Knight. He nodded respectfully, but took a moment to study the man’s features, wondering whether or not they’d crossed paths before. Battles were large and tiresome, making it difficult to distinguish between unfamiliar faces, and he worked inside the castle a majority of the time. It was likely they could’ve seen each other at one point or another, but who was to say?
‘… I suspect you were a Knight for a lot longer than me.’
Was that… an insult? Magnus raised a brow, hiking his chin up an inch, staring for a moment. “Undoubtedly.” He muttered, meaning that his skills with a sword were unmatched━especially compared to someone who was barely a Knight. Unfortunately, with that came a specific question about his age. “No, not in th’least.” Magnus huffed, though that wasn’t the total truth, but it depended on how one measured ‘new.’ He didn’t believe he was━Philippa wasn’t much more experienced as a vampire than he was, and yet he’d put all his trust in her. “Are you?” He doubted it.
Then, he thought, perhaps this vampire was judging his actions━running around draining humans with no care or concern. He didn’t feel the need to give an excuse, but Magnus let the words slip from his mouth anyway, “I lost someone close to me very recently; do not mistake my actions for that of a callous, young vampire.” He puffed, stepping away and heading back towards the door.
“Ya mentioned all th’villages are full of the dead. From which direction did you come?” Magnus asked, glancing back at the stranger over his shoulder. He wanted to make sure that he would head in the right way, otherwise it would be a while until Magnus had another meal.

So this was God’s way of wiping the slate clean to start again with the humans. The pair weren’t going to come to an agreement on the matter. Hector knew that if his life was going to span over the next few centuries then he would witness even more plagues, but still it didn’t mean had to drain every human within a five-mile vicinity. His brows shot up when he referred to them as demons, “I wouldn’t refer to myself as a demon. I tend to keep the humans alive… feed on them then I erase their memory.” He was trying his best to keep his victim count low. He didn’t need that on his conscience for eternity. The man wasn’t someone he’d met before, but as he admitted he was a Knight for such a short period of time. Magnus had no doubt been sent into double, if not triple, the number of battles Hector had been sent to. His role was largely keeping the village safe though from those who thought they were above the laws imposed on them. The same laws Hector had found himself breaking since turning. He shrugged in response to Magnus’ question, “Nearly seventy years, but apparently, vampires have been around for centuries so compared to some I am young.” He was still learning how to be a vampire and even though he could handle the cravings a little better now there were still moments where he wanted to rip someone's throat out. There was a reason he was being careless with his feeding. “I am sorry to hear that.” The only person he had grown close to was Nicholas, but not close enough to kill people if he were to die. It was a given that day would come at some point with his immortality. He glanced down at the deceased woman as Magnus was starting to leave, wondering whether to take her body upstairs to lie her down on one of the beds in an attempt to conceal the fact she hadn’t died from the plague. The gaping holes on the side of her neck were enough of an indicator, but he suspected her body wouldn’t be found for a few weeks. In that time Magnus would be far far away and Hector would be in France. His eyes darted back towards Magnus as he spoke again, “London…” He paused, wondering whether it was wise to tell Magnus the city still had a number of living people there, “It’s rather grim there, but you won’t need to look far for a meal… perhaps pick off the ones who are close to death.” A suggestion he was hoping Magnus would heed. ━ evil notions come free ━ MAGNUS DIDN’T CONSIDER HIMSELF A YOUNG OR inexperienced vampire, but he supposed Hector was correct. There were a lot of them out there, and they relied on strength as their measure of power. Hector was older than Magnus, albeit by a small margin in vampire terms. He nodded slowly, understanding in his calm━which didn’t seem possible for a monster tearing through villages.
“Thank you.” Magnus nodded curtly at Hector’s condolences, unwilling to dwell on it much longer. He looked away again, staring into the darkness of the horizon, his jaw set. As if it would make this a little more bearable if he clenched his teeth hard enough.
London. It was almost between Magnus and the Windsor Castle he was running from, and he didn’t plan to go back. Knowing many were still alive there was helpful, though. He’d continue on his journey away. “That’s in the other direction to where I’m ‘eaded,” He nodded, swallowing thickly through the pain of Philippa’s death. Why was he cursed to constantly remember? Constantly grieve? “I’m lookin’ to stay in th’smaller areas; there are not so many eyes.” He flashed the other vampire a wry, half-smile, amused because he’d been found out already.
“It was a pleasure t’make your acquaintance, Hector. I’m sure we will cross each other’s paths again, whether it be a hundred years from now or sooner.” He shifted halfway out the door, nodding at the man as he left. “Or perhaps during the next plague!” Magnus called from outside, chuckling dryly before he vanished in a blur. He’d head off to the next hamlet, tear the inhabitants from limb to limb, and move again. Perhaps he’d grow tired of this game but, so far, he was not yet ready to give up. Somehow, he would continue thinking it eased his heartache for a long, long time━in human years, anyway.
