The kids sometimes tugged on those heartstrings, but they always went to heaven so it wasn’t too bad. It was easy to forget a soul after a few days of meeting them. In the end, they all blurred into one and Leah really didn’t have time to be standing around listening to their life story. She didn’t care. She didn’t give a fuck about what they hadn’t managed to do with their life or what they regretted. She wasn’t a therapist, she was a reaper. They could pour their problems out elsewhere. But those strings were yanked hard when she saw Raik. She was completely lost for words when he turned around and faced her. He was dead and Grey and his bitch were responsible. Leah had no idea what to do with him. There was no way he could be dead. Remzi’s brother. Fuck. This was bad. To no surprise, Raik was due to be taken upstairs, but Leah refused to cart his soul. She promised him she’d find a way to bring him back. A sorry even slipped from her lips at one point, a softness to her voice she hadn’t heard for a long time. This was her fault. Playing these stupid games with Grey and now a good person ended up dead. She stood and listened to Raik’s story, fury building inside of her with every word that came out of his mouth. Remzi first. Grey and Destiny later. She ordered Raik to stay where he was as she grabbed his dead body before vanishing out of the motel room. The freezers Emerald City would keep him for now. Leah was still furious with Remzi for draining her. How dare he. There was something off about him but she couldn’t put her finger on it until she spoke with a few vampires at the bar. He had flipped a switch inside his head that stopped him from feeling anything. Suddenly everything made sense, but did that mean he didn’t care about her? According to the vampires in the bar, apparently not. He didn’t care about anything or anyone, not even his brother. Remzi was difficult to track down. The vampire was here, there and everywhere. Plus he was never going to respond to a text from Leah asking him to meet her somewhere. Lawrence however. She snatched his phone from his hand with ease, ignoring his voice as she vanished in front of him reappearing just outside the bar seconds later. She furiously typed her message out, her acrylics hitting the screen with that satisfying tap. Even if his emotions were off she knew he couldn’t turn down a good party. ‘Party tonight in the woods near Whitmore college. Lots of drunk college girls to drain. Meet me outside Whitmore house at 7 pm’She appeared back in the bar a few minutes later, throwing Lawrence’s phone down on the bar before teleporting back out. Leah never felt nervous. Even in that split second, when she realized Grey was about to kill her she didn’t feel nerves or even fear. The thought of meeting Remzi had her feeling sick though. She knew the news would tear him apart, or at least it would have done once. He probably wouldn’t even give a shit that his brother was dead, but she had to tell him. Then he could carry on with this life he’d chosen to live now. A life without her apparently. She waited outside Whitmore house, hidden to the naked eye. Why didn’t she just text him? The fucker literally drained her last time they crossed paths and here she was giving him her time. Lawrence told Leah he was hoping Raik would be the one to bring him back, but now he was gone. Leah certainly wouldn’t be the one to flip that switch. She didn’t appeal to his humanity enough, in fact, quite the opposite. She appealed to the side of him that wanted to rip people’s throats out and look what had happened. She’d pushed him too far into that and now he was lost. For the second time, that day tears threatened her eyes. She straightened herself up, taking a deep breath. No. Eventually, she spotted Remzi walking across the campus towards Whitmore house. That same blank look on his face he’d been wearing for a while now. The passion they had was gone, he no longer yearned for her the way he once did. As soon as Remzi drew closer Leah appeared a few feet in front of him. “Hey” She said quietly, taking a step towards him, “I’ve got some news” She was never good at delivering bad news either. Her voice always lacked empathy, but for once she actually cared about the person she was delivering the news to. It wasn’t a stupid soul who’d drunk too much and crashed their car. It was Remzi she was talking to. The vampire she scooped up in LA and brought his bad side to the surface for her own selfish games. Had she completely ruined him? There were so many uncomfortable feelings coming to the surface for her, and they were there because of Remzi. There was a silence lingering in the air as she struggled to bring herself to tell him. “Raik is dead… he died last night and I was called to collect his soul… and” She fell quiet, “I’m sorry Remzi. I am so sorry” Now it was the third time that day she felt those tears sting her eyes, but this time she didn’t push them away. Instead, she let them spill from her eyes and roll down her cheeks. ━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ DRUNK COLLEGE BITCHES WERE Remzi’s fucking forte. Even before losing his humanity, he could never turn down a college party━even before becoming a vampire, actually. He’d never been to college and never planned on it, figuring he was getting the best of it by slipping into frat houses or getting invited by somebody he’d partied with before. Most of his friends had provided the real party to the college students, as well as Remzi, though he enjoyed partaking more than selling.
Seven was early for a party, but Remzi didn’t question it. Surely there would be a few of them around; he could always hop between them and pick up someone early before all the good snacks were taken. Somehow, he wasn’t bored of this.
He was bored, however, of everybody trying to fucking change him or get all up in his personal space all the time. Like Leah, who couldn’t seem to leave him the fuck alone. Did she track him here? Was she finding a new level of crazy bitch to explore?
Frowning immediately upon seeing her, Remzi halted in place and took a small step back, ready to dart away if she was to rip out his heart. He may not have cared about anybody, but his sense of self-preservation was still very much alive (unlike him).
News? Why did he give a shit about whatever news she had? For a second, he wondered if she was pregnant, but then remembered his vampire gift had swiftly taken care of that. It was a blessing, in all honesty, but he’d never give that tiny red-haired chick the satisfaction. Speaking of, why were all these bitches suddenly haunting him now?
“Spit it out.” He muttered, staring at her blankly. And, finally, it came.
Raik is dead.
Remzi felt a tug in his chest, a hard thump of his heart, making him feel like he was about to throw up. His eyes burned, breath caught in his sternum, one hand darting up to ball his shirt in a fist as if he could rip the pain out that way. “No, fuck. No,” It was hurting again. The same pain he’d felt when he’d made it all go away, turned it off. Remzi tried to push it away, though memories already began to permeate. Throwing other boys against the nearest surface to threaten them, claiming if they ever messed with Raik again, he’d bash their heads together. Even before his growth spurt, Remzi was scrappy and not afraid to defend his little-big-brother no matter what. No matter what.
“What happened? How?” He croaked, glittery eyes jumping to Leah’s, desperate for some sort of explanation. It had to be an accident━some sort of freak accident. But, either way, Raik didn’t deserve it. If it was anybody, it should’ve been Remzi. He deserved it.

Leah was sixteen when her mom referred to her as a sociopath. Well, at first she said psychopath but Leah was quick to disagree with that, telling her mom she had a conscience. She knew killing her dad was wrong and she knew trying to kill Grey was wrong. Everything she had done leading up to this point she knew was wrong, but none of that hit home until she saw Raik’s dead body slumped over the hotel bed and his spirit standing in the corner. When he mentioned Grey’s name Leah seized up. She didn’t tell Raik that she and Grey were related though, as she needed him to listen to her, not hate her and throw the blame on her. She was already feeling the burden of guilt weighing on her enough. She had no idea how to bring a person back from the dead, but she was proof it could happen. Even if it meant bringing him back as something completely different. Remzi needed his brother on this side. “Spit it out”— She truly hated this version of him. There was a flicker of emotion in Remzi’s face, she was certain she saw it. She brought her hand up, brushing away the tears from her face. Fuck, she couldn’t even remember the last time she’d felt this kind of emotion. A raw sadness that brought tears to her eyes and had her chest growing tight as she suppressed the need to cry. It had been locked inside her for so long now, pretty much welding shut when her mom told she didn’t care about her. Describing Leah as some unlovable person, who was a mistake. Not just a little mistake either, but a catastrophic mistake. Her existence brought about sadness to many people, even forcing one of them to take their own life. But this was proof she wasn’t a complete sociopath, just a little bit damaged. Here she was spilling tears over the death of Raik because she cared about Remzi so deeply and for the first time she was realising it. There were moments before where she thought maybe she cared about it, but quickly explained them away. Telling herself she just missed him in bed with her, she didn’t actually miss him as a person. Leah swallowed harshly, “He was killed” There was a quiver in her voice, as she took a deep breath. “Grey and Destiny killed him… they thought he was you. Referring to him as Remzi” At least that’s what Raik made out seconds before the life faded from him, “This is my fault. I’m sorry… I’m so sorry” She never imagined she’d be the one saying sorry to Remzi, or even accepting she’d done something wrong. “I’m gonna find a way to bring him back though… I’ll speak to Death and I’m sure there’s some kind of deal that can be agreed” At that moment she was ready to sacrifice herself if it meant Remzi would have his brother back. She cleared her throat, trying to regain control over her emotion, “I know you don’t care right now, but one day you will and I just want you to know I’ll always be here for you even if it’s in a weeks time or even a decade” She started to walk past Remzi, back towards the woods, “Oh… by the way there’s no college party, sorry” Leah called out without looking back. ━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ HE HAD NEVER SEEN Leah cry. Out of all their years together, he’d never━another memory came with the speed and weight of a freight train. Laying in bed with Leah, bare bodies pressed together, warm despite his condition. He couldn’t remember what he’d said, but it was the first time he’d seen her laugh. Really and truly laugh, tears springing in her eyes. Remzi was just as bad, curled in at the stomach with his forehead pressed to her shoulder, releasing happy chuckles as if they hadn’t had a night full of immoral conquests. It wasn’t the same, she was shedding true tears now, but it didn’t make a difference━the memory cracked him just as her reveal had.
Remzi had never heard Leah take the blame for something, either. He thought the worst part was that wasn’t her fault; it was Remzi’s. Grey and Destiny… referring to him as Remzi… He’d done this. One mistake cascaded, rolled and grew bigger like a snowball, forcing Leah’s hand in his chest, the heartbreak between them, and his separation from Raik. It all led here, to his brother’s death, and it was Remzi’s fault. Dealing with the guilt drove him to turn off his humanity in the first place, and now it was leaning in the other direction. It was all coming at once.
His mind raced, gurgling the rest of her speech until she was turning from him. Remzi dropped to his knees and cried out nothing but her name, one hand pressed to the ground while the other continued to rub at his chest. “I care,” He croaked, useless tears dribbling down his cheeks. It all returned to him━every woman he’d killed since switching it off, since losing his humanity━and it was overwhelming. “It was me. It was my fault,” Remzi sobbed, palm flattening against the Nazar below his shirt. He’d forgotten it was there━it hadn’t mattered to him until now. “I told Grey… when I went to him, because of you, I told him I was Raik. That my brother, Remzi, was sleeping with you. I didn’t want him to go for me instead.” Shaking his head, blue eyes trained to the ground, Remzi squeezed his eyes shut and tried to pull a sturdiness from the Earth that it refused to provide.
He didn’t deserve it.
Tossing his head back, Remzi began rattling off prayers in Turkish, desperate for some kind of help. All he could remember were the ones their mom had drilled into him after his time in the hospital, and now even speaking the words made him feel unworthy. His selfishness had almost stolen one son from her, and now he’d taken the other. The good one.

It wasn’t clear whether Leah was sad over the fact Raik was dead or whether she was sad because it was Remzi’s brother. There was no denying though, this meant she had developed some type of feelings for the stupid vampire. She’d tried to fight it for so long, but the cracks were starting to show and they were seeping in. At first, it was trickling down when Remzi didn’t come running back to her. The cracks were forced open a little wider when he killed her in the motel room, but now she could no longer control it. Leah was prepared to walk away from Remzi. Prepared to accept that he no longer cared about her and that their relationship was over. Relationship was a questionable term to use to describe the pair, but this was the closest she’d ever got to loving someone. It was a rare time in her life that someone actually cared about her and she’d ruined it. She couldn’t even blame Grey for this one. She was the one who pushed Remzi into shutting off his humanity. Her blue eyes stayed locked on his for a moment as she studied his features. His lack of expression, but there was a twitch of emotion behind those eyes for a second when she explained what happened to Raik. Leah was no good for Remzi. She knew that, but there was a chance he was good for her. Their time hadn’t been completely filled with hate and arguments. There had been moments she found herself with a genuine smile whilst talking to him and butterflies in her stomach whenever he caught her eye. He made her special and sometimes when she found herself in his arms the world around them melted away. He helped her to forget her childhood and the emotional abuse she endured at the hands of her mom. None of it mattered now anyway. Raik was dead and Remzi was void of human emotion. For a minute she envied him as the guilt was crushing her. She halted still, turning back to Remzi to see him on the ground. She hesitated for a moment, wondering whether he was playing some kind of joke by pretending he gave a shit about his brother. Believing if he took a step towards him he’d turn on her, just like last time, but those sobs sounded very real to her. It was painful to hear. She rushed over to Remzi, dropping to her knees in front of him. She took hold of each hand, as he began to speak in Turkish. Whatever the hell was up there in the sky wasn’t going to help the pair. “Hey. We’re gonna sort this out. Together.” Tears had started to fall from her eyes, again. “I promise you we’ll get your brother back.” She moved her hands to his face, pulling his gaze down towards her, “I’m sorry… and not just about this but for everything. I don’t deserve you.” She'd often told him that he didn't deserve her, but it wasn't true. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ LEAH’S TOUCH WASN’T ALWAYS COMFORTING. More often than not, they were harsh, violent, or an escape into something else. As soon as she came to him, though━as soon as she was kneeling in front of him and her hands touched his skin━Remzi felt a little better. A little more alive, warm, if all of those things were even possible for a vampire. Whatever it was, he was feeling it. She made him feel it.
His blue eyes turned down from Allah, away from a God who likely didn’t believe in Remzi anymore, who perhaps didn’t acknowledge his existence, and to Leah. He could hear his mother’s voice accusing him of blasphemy in the back of his mind, but it was true━she was the only one he could look to now.
Bring him back. Leah was going to bring Raik back, and even though he knew it worked out for her, it didn’t erase the guilt from Raik’s death. He was gone. He was dead. Perhaps he could come back to life, but he would never be the same, and it would still be Remzi’s fault.
‘I’m sorry… and not just about this but for everything. I don’t deserve you.’
Tears treaded violently down his cheeks. For once, Remzi couldn’t speak, couldn’t think of anything except Leah, though his lips parted and quiet breaths puffed out. He had a million and one things to say━like debating who deserved whom, offering apologies and accepting her own━but nothing brought itself up. His eyes spoke instead, telling Leah he was with her now, his trust and his heart were in her possession (hopefully without the need to tear it from his chest), and that maybe they deserved one another. Neither were inherently good, and both of their wrong-doings piled up to an insurmountable number. Perhaps they could be good for each other, though.
He fell forward, practically collapsing into her. Remzi’s forehead pressed against Leah’s in something deeper than a kiss, far more meaningful, a way to seek comfort and declare trust that was stripped of all human behaviours. Something between pure animal and cosmic fucking bullshit, like their hearts realigning with one another. Remzi’s head dropped to her shoulder, large arms wrapped around her tiny frame as if she was the only thing he needed right now, the only thing that could save him.
