━ i'm something bad ━ AS DIPSHIT SAID, LUCKY returned a little later in the day to see her sister. With Lucille in tow, unwilling to hold her mom’s hand but sticking close to her side anyway (she’d already explored the lobby and found no use for terrorizing guests now), they trudged straight up to the front desk. Well, Lucky did━Lucille was perhaps more a loyal follower than an instigator at the moment.
Nerves buzzed in her stomach at the sight of Cat, though she quickly wiped any evidence of it from her face. She’d abandoned them for something better━a shithole town and a hotel receptionist was better?━and left the three… no, four of them to fend for themselves. Sure, Lucky didn’t want her help raising Lucille, but she… well, she thought Patrick would be around a lot longer. She wondered if that other dipshit, Cameron, was still in her life. How anybody could stand being in Catia’s presence that long, she didn’t know.
A single man was blocking Lucky’s way from coming face-to-face with her sister, and while it was probably her job to be friendly, Lucky didn’t have time to sit around while he flirted very poorly. “Alright, move the fuck along, buddy. Nobody wants to hear it.” Lucky hissed, forcing the man to turn and shoot her an incredulous look, perhaps too shocked to speak. “What, you’re not used to someone calling you on your bullshit? Get the fuck out of line if you’re not going to be productive. I got shit to do, and you’re holding me up.” Moving in a little closer as he started to sputter, sounding a little like ‘Well, I never!’, Lucky narrowed her eyes up at him. “You’re better off finding a woman at least five years younger, brainless, and willing to wait for your little blue pill to kick in as long as you buy her a pretty diamond necklace. I won’t fucking repeat myself.”
Snatching his briefcase, he waddled out in a little kerfuffle, leaving Lucky to stare after him with a grin, proud of her work. She moved in, dropping her arms on the edge of the front desk, which was a little too tall, and smirked at Cat. “Hey, sis, long time no see. I woulda thought the guy with a colour for a name was givin’ it to ya, but turns out I was wrong. Guess you’ve got no shortage of geriatric pipe to lay in this little town, huh?”

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Another day another dollar. Catia honestly enjoyed her work, after all it had taken her all across the country. Staying in New York hadn’t really been an option after Cameron’s death, and Greys prosperity in the hotel business had come at the right time. Concentrating on her work had come as a great distraction at the time. Many years later the pain was still there just slightly less.
Covering once again their receptionists’ lunch break, she was at the main desk for a short while. Usually it could be quiet, other times rather busy. Today was the latter. Everyone wanting to check out or in at the same time it seemed. She got down to the last person, wanting to check in. Greeting him as she would anyone else and sorting him out a room. Handing over his key card telling him his room number and giving him a small welcome leaflet detailing the hotels facilities he could use during his stay.
Though when he didn’t immediately move on, trying his best to flirt. While inside Catia wanted to slap him, unfortunately her job as a manager in this hotel prevented it. Even if Grey wouldn’t frown on it, considering the circumstances… Instead, she tried to politely move him along, ” I’m sorry, other people are waiting…” Catia asked politely. Though it seemed the person behind him was sick of waiting but the voice…. She recognised it immediately.
One she hadn’t heard for a long time. She looked up and smiled a little apologetically toward the man her sister was insulting but said nothing. When he moved on Catia masked her and she seen her sister for the first time in years. Her eyes and face hardened then as she looked toward her sister and paid her comments no mind, especially about Cameron, ” What are you doing here?” Catia asked her, her voice cold. She flicked her eyes to the child standing beside her, knowing it was her niece. Years ago, Lucky had made it clear that she didn’t want or need her in her life. So Catia had gave her that wish and had been quite happy never seeing any of her siblings again.

━ i'm something bad ━ IT SEEMED LIKE CATIA didn’t have any interest in the sharp back-and-forth. Lucky didn’t care so much; she would’ve liked to dig up some emotions from her sister, strike a nerve, but if she wanted Cat to hurt, she would’ve gone for Cameron instead of Grey. Unfortunately, Cat didn’t even respond when it was about her boss, and Lucky sighed internally; no doubt he’d warned her about Lucky’s arrival. She really hated it when shit stopped being fun. This reunion would be anything but, and a little poke here and there would’ve been great. If only.
“Well, I can’t afford to stay at this uppity shithole, so clearly I’m here to see you.” Lucky smiled sharply and with no kindness, much akin to a viper. “How’ve you been, Cat? Other than slaving away for a man with little morals. Has life worked out since you abandoned us?” She sneered, ready to jab Cat a few more times if Lucille, who was impatiently waiting at Lucky’s side, suddenly snapped to attention.
“Auntie Cat?” Lucky went rigid. She’d never heard Lucy sound so sweet and innocent, perhaps desperate to meet the aunt she’d never known. Her little feet began to move, finding a way around the desk and into Cat’s arms.
“Lucy━” Lucky began, though quickly cut herself off when she realized she was too late; she’d raised her kid to be headstrong, and so if Lucille wanted to throw her arms around her Aunt, that’s what she’d do. Lucky pretended it didn’t warm her heart or make her think of a different life━one where she still had her older sister.

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
One thing about Cat is that day she had walked away from her childhood, she hadn’t looked back. She hadn’t even thought about it. They had made their choice. She had spent the majority of her childhood making sure her sisters had everything they needed. Their father was useless after all. Her sisters had never asked her to do it, but they needed someone. Who else was it going to fall to?
She hadn’t even really thought about her sisters since the day she left. Why would she? They had made it clear that everything she had done to help hadn’t been wanted, so she left to finally put herself first and she wasn’t going to think about the past. That was at least until her past walked up to the reception desk of one of the many hotels that she managed.
Ignoring the deliberate attempt to push her buttons from her youngest sister and instead just got right to the point. Of wanting to know why she was here. When In her usual flourish Lucky admitted she was here to see her, Catia couldn’t help having a hard time believing it, ” Why? You want to see me after all these years? What for?” Catia asked again. Was it money she needed? That she could believe, though she hadn’t wanted her help before and most certainly wouldn’t be here asking for it now so many years later.
Catia watched as the receptionist came back from her lunch break and Catia stepped out to the side but remained behind the desk. What she wanted to know what how she knew about Grey? That she would make a mental note to ask her friend about that later, ” I haven’t thought about you or the twins since I left, life has been good.” Catia added. That might have been selfish of her but she didn’t care.
Slaving away? She made her own schedule. Something that Lucky might not understand as she probably never really worked a day in her life. Deep down Catia knew that couldn’t possibly be true. She must have some income or else she wouldn’t be here right now. Trying to keep her little sister at arm’s length when the child next to her suddenly piped up.
Catia looked down at her, her lips twitching upwards a little as the little girl rounded the counter. She seemed to freeze a little, out of surprise more than anything. She knew who she was? She was certain she would never get a chance to know her niece, because her niece would never know her. She returned the small embrace from the little girl.
Catia when she was freed from the embrace, she crouched down so she was almost at eye level with the ten-year-old, ” It’s nice to meet you Lucy…” Catia told her, ” But as cute as you are, you really shouldn’t be back here. So, let’s go on the other side of the desk together hmm?” Catia asked of her before pushing herself to her feet, taking the little girls hand in hers and walked with her around the other side of the counter coming to face her sister again, ” You’ve done a good job Lucky…” Catia commended sincerely.

━ i'm something bad ━ LUCKY COULDN’T EXACTLY ANSWER Cat’s question. There wasn’t anything concise about the way she felt, either━half of it she wouldn't admit to herself. She’d like to say she was here to rub her life in Cat’s face, to present her kid (who maybe wasn’t the best child ever, but was at least breathing) and boast that she’d done it alone━without Cat’s help. But while some of that was true, it wasn’t the majority. She missed her sister, and even though Cat was the one who left, Lucky had tried to rob Lucille of an aunt. That wasn’t fair.
“Because you have a niece you’ve never met, and I haven’t seen you in almost a decade.” That was the easiest way to say everything without it being too much. Honest enough to continue speaking about it, but not laying her heart on the table.
‘I haven’t thought about you or the twins since I left, life has been good.’
Lucky smiled sourly. That couldn’t be true; even Lucky could admit she thought about Cat every once in a while━how could you be such a monster that you wouldn’t think about your siblings? She was saving face, which meant there was a way to wedge in. “Well, that’s great.” Lucky said in a voice that clearly portrayed she didn’t believe her sister. “Look at you, never feeling guilty about abandoning us. You’re more heartless than I thought. I guess that’s what happens when you hang around assholes like your boss.”
What she hadn’t expected, though, was Lucille overhearing Cat’s name and taking it upon herself to come say hello. She’d only mentioned Lucille once or twice, but it was honestly irritating that Cat wouldn’t even acknowledge her niece until she made the first move.
At least she hugged Lucy back. If she hadn’t, Lucky would’ve launched over the counter and beaten her senseless. They could hurl all kinds of awful shit at each other, but she wouldn’t stand for Lucy getting any sort of mistreatment.
God, couldn’t be on that side of the counter? Lucky thought she was supposed to be a bit higher up in this business━clearly she was just a slave. She would’ve been behind there for maybe five seconds, and Lucky understood if Lucy were to start messing shit up behind there, but what was there to steal? A fucking stapler?
Watching Lucy walk back around with a big smile on her face proved to Lucky that, even if this confrontation was awful, it was worth it; she’d made the right decision.
Had she done a good job, though? Lucille never went hungry, and she tried to make sure the girl always felt loved, but she was a thief, and it wasn’t likely to be something she’d grow out of. Especially not when Lucky encouraged it. Either way, she wouldn’t not accept the compliment, especially from the sister that left them.
“I know. You would, too, if you hadn’t fucked off for good after one little fight.” It was more than that, and Lucky knew it. Lucille knew it, too, which was why she was probably so happy that Cat seemed to give a shit about her now━because she’d been told her aunt had left when she was just a baby, never caring to know her.
“So, what have you done with your life━since it’s apparently been ‘so good.’ Married to that shit-stick yet, pop out a kid of your own to ruin, or did he finally leave you?” She smirked, crossing her arms over her chest and staring up at Cat. Honestly, she wanted to know, though nothing came from her mouth but venom.

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Catia was surprised to see her youngest sister in the hotel lobby. Why she was here Catia didn’t know. Asking her that exact question, curiosity if nothing else. Sighing a little at her answer not quite believing it was because she wanted to see her. When she left, she had made it patently clear that her help was more meddlesome than anything else, ” How did you even know where I was?” Catia asked her. She hadn’t exactly stayed put in a long time and hadn’t exactly left a forwarding address or telephone number when she had left her sisters behind.
The next words out of her mouth even for her were quite nasty. In truth the moment she left she was concerned for them. How they were going to get by without her. Since they were children, and their father lost the family fortune, she had done nearly everything for them. Catia let out a huff of laughter, ” I abandoned you? If that’s how you want to look at it, I guess. Though I distinctly remember you and the twins saying you didn’t need nor want my help anymore.” Catia reminded her. Reminded her exactly who had basically told her to leave.
Before Catia could tell her sister to sling her hook, her daughter wondered around to her side of the counter. Catia took her eyes off her sister for the moment, honestly surprised that she even knew who she was. Returning the hug when the little girl wrapped her arms around her, and Catia decided in that moment to be a little nicer. At least with Lucy around. Crouching down Catia spoke to Lucy telling her that she shouldn’t be on this side and so Catia would go on the other side with her.
Taking the little girls hand she walked with her to the other side. Catia managed a compliment toward Lucky about her daughter and Catia narrowed her eyes, ” Does everything always have to be a fight with you?” Catia asked and honestly it was how things had been at least since she had become a teen. Catia wasn’t going to apologise for leaving, for choosing her life, her future over that of her siblings. She wasn’t ever going to apologise again for putting herself first.
More venom and more harsh words grating on Catia’s patience. When she asked about Cameron, Catia’s eyes darkened. She breathed out and counted to ten before she answered, ” He’s dead, Lucky… Has been for years.” Catia told her, her voice cold, ” Now you wanted to see me, we can be civil go in there and get something to eat or drink… or you can continue whatever this is but don’t expect me to stand here and listen to it.” Catia told her younger sister.
Hoping she would make the right choice and join her in the hotel restaurant she looked down at her niece and asked her a question, ” So what do you want to eat? Nuggets? Cheeseburger?” Catia asked her niece before looking back up at Lucky leaving the ball in her court, ” What shall it be?” Catia asked her.

━ i'm something bad ━ LUCKY WASN’T LOOKING TO stick around for too many pleasantries. She wanted to reconnect with her sister (or maybe just rub how well she’d done in her face), but the small-talk started to make her skin itchy like she’d break out in hives. “Saw it in a guy who stayed here.” She answered, voice clipped, trying to get through this as quickly as possible. “And yeah, ‘cause you were down my fucking throat. I didn’t mean forever, just that you didn’t have to do everything anymore. Then you decided that meant you could go. If you wanted to be free of us, you could’ve done it a lot sooner.” After she’d vanished, they quickly realized what sort of mistake they’d made. Cat did practically everything. Though, Lucky supposed it wouldn’t be a popular saying if she was the only one who’d experienced it━you don’t appreciate what you’ve got until it’s gone.
Lucille intervened on the fiery rift between the sisters, wooing the aunt she’d never met with the charm she used on everyone. She likely wouldn’t steal from Cat, though. Maybe. Lucky honestly hoped she would, just so Lucky could picture Cat’s face later on and laugh about it.
“Yup.” Lucky tipped her chin up triumphantly, though it all bled away when Cat shared the news. Lucky’s face fell for only a moment, true shock and remorse shining through until it was bottled up again, her expression blank more than anything else. She wasn’t smug, or sad, just… nothing.
“Patrick, too. Fucking sucks, huh?” She refused to say ‘I’m sorry’ because she wasn’t, and she fucking hated when people gave their condolences that way. A tiny, evil part of her wanted to laugh at the fact that Cat’s grand scheme hadn’t worked out, but neither did Lucky’s. And Cat never came back to them like Lucky was sure she would when it inevitably didn’t go her way. But Lucky had never thought…
Before she could answer, Lucille chimed in with, “Nuggets!” And Lucky snorted.
“This place sells crap like that?” It looked like the sort of joint where the minimum order was a hundred bucks. “Yeah, you heard the lady. We’ll stay for nuggets, but I can’t promise I’ll be civil… or that Lucy will be; she’s a beast when she gets some chicken nuggets.” Just a ghost of a smile crossed Lucky’s face as they walked into the swanky bar, following Cat to wherever was best for them to sit. Lucky wasn’t scared of him, but she didn’t want that idiot owner coming ‘round and making another big fucking scene.
Slipping into her seat with the other two, Lucky tried to settle. She breathed slowly and rolled her shoulders, eyes flicking to Lucy before they went back to Cat. Her daughter was busy eyeing the little drink menu like there was anything on there she could have. “How long after you left? Months, weeks? And you still didn’t bother coming back?” Was it pride more than anything? That was one thing Lucky could understand, though she wouldn’t be granting her sister grace anytime soon.

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Catia mentally sighed. She had forgotten how frustrating her youngest sister could be. How they all could be sometimes. She had given the majority of her childhood, her teenage years. It was only when she had gone to college that she started taking more time for herself. When Lucky and the twins were older and could look after themselves.
Catia wanted to snap back and just say that no she hadn’t been down her throat, that in truth she had been an entitled brat and that is what ruined their relationship. Stubbornness and pride had been both their downfalls, ” What did you expect? That I would roll over and stick around for more abuse? No thanks…” Catia told her. She was biting her tongue, with her niece there. There were some choice words that she could say but was choosing not to.
When Lucky rudely asked about Cameron Catia had to couch to ten again before responding. Catia told her that Cameron was dead. Didn’t elaborate on the details. Catia was shocked by Lucky’s brief slip of the mask she wore constantly. Then almost as quickly as it fell the mask was back up again in seconds, ” That’s one way to put it, yeah.” Catia agreed when Lucky eloquently said that it ‘fucking sucks.’
To put a stop to the fighting Catia invited them to join her in the bar for some lunch, but only if they were civil with each other. Catia couldn’t be bothered continuing the senseless verbal battle. When Catia had said her piece, she offered her niece a choice of cheeseburger or nuggets. Before Lucky could even give her answer Lucille was already shouting her response. Instead of giving her answer Catia rolled her eyes with a sigh at her words, ” It’s called catering for all age groups… Wouldn’t be much of a restaurant if it didn’t provide for children, now would it?” Catia told her.
” Coming right up!” Catia announced as she took Lucille’s hand in hers Catia led them both through to the restaurant. You wouldn’t think by looking at it that it was that type of place. Kids menu wasn’t expensive, it was predominantly frozen and lasted forever. As long as it continued to make money, they wouldn’t get rid of it. Leading them over to a table Catia sank into a seat that was opposite Lucky. Catia let Lucky have a look at the menu. While Lucky was busy perusing her own menu, Catia slipped Lucille the kids dessert menu with a small wink, ” It was a few years. Lived in Brooklyn while we both finished college.” Catia explained. When Lucky asked why she never came back, ” There was nothing left for me at home Lucky. You and the twins clearly got on fine without me, why would I come back?” Catia asked that question almost gently.
Moments later the waiter came over to take their order. Lucille enthusiastically gave hers while Catia waited for Lucky to put in hers.
