Well, the little place was still standing at least. Mal rocked back on his heels, smirking at the crumbling house surrounded by the thick scrub of woods. It’d seemed a close call when he’d trailed their highly charged experiment out here. Firing off sparks like she was about to go up like a roman candle. She never did get her answer about what he was and never would, even if she was to come stumbling out here again. Poor little Professor Braschi – all that light in her and still stuck firmly in the dark.
The comparison was enough to turn the smirk up to a full grin – smug and flashing teeth that were far too good to have come out of the bawdy houses at the docks – as he turned and started back through the winter dry grass. The prof was like the others, doomed to never recall just what had happened to them in their chair. In fact, the only with much of a clue about him outside of the other docs was Krista. Mal hissed a breath in through his teeth, that smile rapidly turning upside down to have those lines springing up across his brow. That’d been a dangerous move, but she’d begged and maybe some part of him was happy to live a little dicey again.
They’d definitely lied there. This town’s full of danger, they’d said, so bloody po-faced it was a wonder their mugs hadn’t cracked. Full of victims – sorry, boss, experiments – just about willing to hand themselves over, but no real danger. Wasn’t a surprise that he’d felt like he was sitting there twiddling his thumbs almost immediately. The doc had sodded off God only knew where with his little mate and the rest of them were left to stew.
Could the doc really blame him for keeping himself busy then?
Mal blew a raspberry as he emerged from the woods onto one of the paths that led through the heart of the campus. Hands in his pockets, hazel eyes ticking from student to student. The hospital ID still hung around his neck, flashed at the security guard an hour and a half ago to go and do his civic duty over at the med school. No butchery now, although some of the students in the haematology class had been a lot closer in skill level to some back street saw bones to an actual doctor. Bloody brutal if you asked him – although the professors hadn’t, just beaming grateful smiles at him as he’d tipped the class a salute and swaggered out. A handful of them would probably end up at the hospital this summer, looking up at the real docs with eyes filled with wonder and admiration for the whole five minutes it’d take them to figure out how tough medicine actually was. Not his problem then though, they didn’t tend to cycle through the phlebotomy lab the way they did the other departments and that was fine by him.
Couldn’t have his side line stomped all over after all. He ran his tongue over his lower lip, sighed as it came up dry. Not a drop of the blood he’d neck from the vials the students had pulled left, not even a coppery tang on his tongue to curb the hunger that was always there.
He shook his head, stopped as he realised where he was. Oh, that wasn’t gonna be a problem now. Dorms. Scattered along one side of the campus. He probably could’ve talked his way into any of them – ’oh yeah, mate, my kid’s up on the 4th floor, got a little somethin’ for her’ – no kid on earth was gonna question a parent bringing something to their kid. If he got a stubborn one that did, well, those pretty hazel eyes would cover it. He wouldn’t have to worry about that though.
Krista.
Fixing on the dorm he knew was hers – she’d babbled on about a new roommate, some chick who wouldn’t have looked outta place down on the docks – Mal grinned again. Just a little snack and he’d be back on the road. After the trick with the panties at the mall he had a little ass kissing to do he supposed, although she’d forgive him finger snap quick with the right attention. He caught the door as it went to swing shut, side stepped almost immediately as – hello!.
He held his hands hovering out in front of him, the smile turning sweet as the molasses they’d ‘liberated’ from a Spanish barque. His eyes narrowed faintly, almost like they were squinting with joy, almost. ”It’s Kitty, ain’t it? You’re Krista’s mate, the one with the uh … “ Mal aimed a forefinger at his own eye. ”I’d say just the woman I was hopin’ to see but that’d be Krista. Sure she’s mentioned me by now. Mal?” The smile took on a cheesy edge in that rough hewn face, hands spreading again. Knowing Krista she’d babbled about him to everybody who’d listen. If loose lips still sank ships, she’d have his at rock bottom before Easter.

Maybe that's what her life was missing. A boyfriend. Someone to spend time with all the time. She didn’t exactly want a boyfriend, but maybe she needed one. A person to keep her busy so she wasn’t spending every weekend at the club getting with Phoebe. Then again, she was young. These years were for partying and enough herself to the absolute maximum, as well trying to keep up with her college work of course. She wasn’t stupid though. Partying came in behind college work as a priority. But then if she had a boyfriend she’d have someone to answer to. It was hard enough having her grandma on the other end of the phone every other day making sure her youngest granddaughter wasn’t dead somewhere. Most of their conversations would consist of Kitty telling her she was eating well and all was good, then her grandma going off into a long-winded story about when she lived in Japan. Somehow, no matter what they spoke about the conversation would swing around to one of her grandma’s stories. Which was fine, Kitty loved hearing about them, even if she had been told them a million times before. It brought a smile to her face whenever she listened to her grandma talks about her days in Japan and her childhood over there. It was a completely different world compared to America. Her mom promised to take the girls to Japan once they were older. A promise that was broken, thanks to her dad. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she thought maybe she and Krista could go over there after college like some graduation thing. She wasn’t sure with what money but they’d figure that out somehow. The girl could do some really cool road trips through Japan! She was allowing her mind to run away with the idea very quickly, the smile on her face only growing wider as she wandered back to her dorm. She couldn’t wait to pitch her new idea to Krista when she got back home. A hop in her walk as her mind ran away. What else was she going to do after college? Before she started she had big dreams of creating her own video game or even mobile app, but sometimes she was worried she was dreaming a little bit too big. It was an unattainable goal. She’d watched other students in her course try and do exactly that, and failed every time. What made her so different? Whatever, she was having a blast at college and she loved her course, so that’s all that mattered to her. At least for now. Maybe in like a million years when she was wrinkly and struggling to pay her debt, maybe then she’d reconsider her decision to go to college. For now, she was having lots of fun. His sisters constantly reminded her that wasn’t the main aim in life though. Apparently, Kitty needed some kind of part time job to fund her lifestyle. There was absolutely nothing in Mystic Falls that piqued her interest though. Everything just seemed so boring, like waiting on tables or making coffee. Of course, she told her sisters she had been looking religiously for a job to keep them off her back. Not a complete lie. She had been looking, just not applying. Kitty pushed the door of her dorm room open. No sign of Krista inside. She quickly spun back around as she heard someone’s hand collide with the door. Immediately she frowned at the stranger, until he announced who he was. Mal— the one and only. She broke into a wide grin, nodding. Granted, he was a little older than she was expecting, but then again Krista did explain to her that the man prefers bars over clubs. Quiet music in the background rather than the stuff that blasted through the club. Her friend had managed to bag herself the mature type. “Hey Mal!” She responded, her voice filled with excitement. Finally, she was meeting him. “I think Krista is in class, but you’re more than welcome to wait in here for her. She’ll be back soon” Kitty nodded towards Krista’s free bed. MAL BLACKTHORNE

Sailors and parrots were a ridiculous cliché, no one who went to sea sailed around with one hanging out on their shoulder. Birds were generally considered ill luck – given the mess they’d make of the deck it was no sodding wonder. There’d been a short lived captain on his second vessel who had picked one up somewhere in the Indies though. If you were in the man’s bad books – and it wasn’t though his own fault he ended up there every other week of the three months Allston had been there thank you very much – you’d end up with the job of looking after the thing. Bright red and green with a gleaming eye you couldn’t trust, the thing would give you a nip if you weren’t looking and a mouthful if you did. It shouldn’t have been much of a comparison but there’d been times Krista had reminded him of Achilles – bloody stupid name for a bird if you asked him. Pretty to the eye, sweet of mouth when it would get all kissy kissy with the Captain but capable of a real mouthful if you it took a dislike to you.
The comparison came to mind again the minute the girl with the eye patch came into view. Mal almost planted his hands on his knees and bent to howl with laughter. Pirate indeed. The girl probably hadn’t ever been out on open water but strap a sword on her and she’d look every bit the part. It was no wonder Krista had taken to her then. A former sailor – albeit in her majesty’s navy and not some privateer’s barque – in her bed, a pirate as a bestie. That mischievous parrot between, just waiting to take a little nibble with that razor sharp beak.
Mal doubted the girl felt the same sorta amusement with him. The older man - if only she had a clue just how much - crooking a finger whenever he wanted and Krista would come running. It shoulda been enough to have Kitty whispering sense in Krista’s ear and enough for Krista to jam her fingers in them to try and avoid hearing anything bad about him. That clingy attraction eclipsed just about everything else, including him feeding her to the store detectives for filching a pair of knickers.
Despite her rakish look Mal didn’t think Kitty would go risking the slap on the wrist for a pair of frilly little French looking things. This was a woman who likely carried a cut throat razor in her belt instead. Dangerous in a way Krista couldn’t be unless someone had a blade to his throat and then she’d likely lose it, throwing herself in someone in a frenzy.
Now that had him grinning again, the same way thinking about the electrified professor had when he’d been out by that old house in the woods. Sweeter this time, returned by Kitty the minute he introduced himself. Like either one of them needed the name, Krista had undoubtedly babbled about him as much as she had to him about Kitty.Brows hitching, Mal offered a hand and chuckled. ”Nice to finally meet ya. Krista’s certainly been fillin’ me in. Gotta admit I’ve not got her timetable committed to memory yet.” The availability of his willing fountain usually wasn’t a problem with almost endless juice boxes at the hospital. Maybe Krista had mentioned it too but most of the time when the babbling his thoughts started drifting with the tide.
Glancing around the room, Mal picked out those little signs that screamed Krista. He didn’t need to take the punt on which was Krista’s side of the room, he probably could’ve picked it out even without Kitty’s nod. Mal bounced down on it, hands on the edge of the mattress as he looked up at the girl. ”Not puttin’ you out am I? You looked like you were headin’ out when I got ‘ere.” He didn’t get up to head out though. Nodding towards the other bed, Mal encouraged Kitty to take a duvet covered pew. ”Krista’s been pretty happy you took her under your wing. Guess she lucked out more than once.” Although most in the town wouldn’t have said she had with him, especially if they’d seen those little nibble marks on her neck.

Kitty and Krista were young girls in their prime sharing a dorm room. Of course they gossiped about boys and Kitty felt like she knew everything about Mal. She would lie on her bed listening to her friend talk about her boyfriend for hours (or at least sometimes it felt like hours). Kitty didn’t mind though, she would hang off every word Krista said. Meanwhile she would be chatting about whatever boy she was talking to that week on the dating app. Kitty would bounce across the room to Krista to show her the new boy she had just matched as the girls discussed what Kitty’s first message should be. She never actually committed to meeting someone though. She wanted to meet someone casually, like in a bar, like Mal and Krista, but she was always too busy running off towards the dancefloor. Her grandmother said she would meet someone when she least expected it and to never go looking for love (although she wasn’t looking, to begin with). Here he was. The older man but in person. Kitty had stalked Krista’s Instagram and Facebook to find Mal previously, even when her friend insisted he wasn’t the type of guy to have social media. Did that make him cooler as well? Maybe he was too cool for social media, but she couldn’t understand how he found out what was going on in other people's lives. It was so fun to scroll endlessly on Facebook to see what her old school friends were now doing with her life or even better checking out her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend. Without social media, Krista couldn’t even stalk Mal’s exes. There was a grin on her face as Mal said that Krista had mentioned her as well. “I’m sure she’d print you a copy if you asked.” In fact, she knew Krista would jump at that idea. Kitty closed the door as Mal made his way over to Krista’s side of the room. The tidy side, albeit the bed was still unmade. It wouldn’t have been tidy in her grandmother’s opinion, but compared to Kitty’s side it was. Meanwhile, Kitty had T-shirts screwed up in the corner that she washed weeks ago and never actually put away. A pair of jeans on the floor and a half-eaten sandwich from the day before that was now probably rock solid. It was an organized mess, to an extent. Like, she knew where her favourite pair of jeans were, but she probably didn’t know where the top she borrowed from Krista had crawled off to. She moved to the other side of the, “No course not. I was only heading to the shop.” She sat down on her bed, shuffling backwards so her back was resting against the wall. She smiled sheepishly, “I'm so happy we met! She's awesome” The lost looking girl in the coffee shop in the early hours of the morning. When Kitty told her grandmother how she met Krista she was deeply concerned that her granddaughter was awake at such an hour. “Y’know I was starting to wonder when I would get to meet Krista’s boyfriend! It’s great to finally put a face to a name I’ve been hearing all about for the past…” She tried to remember how long Krista and Mal had been together, but failed, “God knows how many months” She wore a wide grin as she folded her legs onto the bed. “So. Tell me all about yourself! Where did you grow up? Do you have any hobbies? What’s your star sign?” She had been given some information from Krista about Mal, but it all seemed somewhat vague. Like, she knew Mal, but at the same time, she didn’t have a clue about him. MAL BLACKTHORNE

Krista rarely stopped talking. It was a constant gibbering that he tuned out half the time, listening in just enough to catch the salient points. He knew it irritated her at times, cause everything she felt – good or bad – ended up written all over her face. If the girl had a poker face it was paper thin. Sometimes he tried to give her the impression that a little more of his attention was there but he still only took half of it in. Oi, that was a pretty good ratio given how much he’d had to listen to over the centuries.
She’d moved in with Kitty almost as long ago – it seemed – as she’d been going home with him. The endless chatter spilling through how she’d met Kitty, right down to everything the girl was up to, including the trips onto dating apps, although considering how many ‘dates’ she had, it didn’t look as though Kitty was as desperate to find the one as she was to check out as many ones as possible. Mal supposed that was what the college experience was meant to be, instead of the place to hang out when you weren’t clinging onto your two hundred and change year old vampire ‘boyfriend’. Naw, he definitely wouldn’t be Kitty’s type, although she seemed to light up as he dropped into the conversation that Krista had been twittering all about her to him.
Mal’s smile brightened, his eyes crinkling at the corners in a way that looked all warmth but wasn’t entirely. The one bonus of the timetable, other than knowing exactly where to track Krista down when he was on campus and hungry was knowing the opposite, being able to duck her at those times when he didn’t want her interrupting with some cut price security guards or a phone call to the tow yard to wreck his plans. ”I’ll have to do just that,” he promised. He dropped onto Krista’s bed, long legs tucked around the edge of it as he smoothed fingers over the covers. Asking Krista for anything was asking for trouble. Blood being the exception of course.
He ran his tongue against the roof of his mouth. There was a chance he could have a snack from the roommate before Krista got back but there were all sorts of risks involved in that he wasn’t sure he wanted to take. The possibility of vervain, difficulties – all too bloody rife in this town – in compelling her after, worse of all Krista walking into the room in the middle of it and screaming the place down in jealousy.
The girl wasn’t leaving him on his own here at least. She settled in her territory, the sort of messy that left him wincing faintly. Clothes scattered, something that was beginning to smell just a little off on a plate. Mal’s nose rankled faintly, even as he chuckled. ”Glad to hear it. Wouldn’t wanna be a bother.” Especially when Kitty already had the one of Krista. The girl had practically taken her in so it had to mean she hadn’t got too tired of her yet. ”That she is. I guess we both lucked out with her bein’ here, hey? All that trouble with her family, means she needs people like you around.” He was laying it on thick but keeping Krista living here with someone who actually liked her meant she wasn’t ending up in his motel room 24/7, a situation which would’ve made everything else exceptionally sticky.
Shifting backwards on the bed to get himself comfortable, Mal let his booted feet dangle off the edge. His arms crossed over his chest, a wolfish edge catching at his smile as he eyed Kitty. There it was, the keen edge of interest that belied that grin she shot in his direction. ”Had to happen in the end, hey?” His own laugh rumbled out, one hand coming up for him to scratch at the scruff of beard over his chin. ”Lookin’ for me life story? Well, that’s probably gonna be shorter than you’re lookin’ for. It’s not all that interestin’. Wasn’t born here, obviously.” He flipped his finger towards his mouth, like he was pointing at the accent. ”Lookin’ to see my moon and Krista’s are compatible?” The laugh became a cackle at that. Some might’ve said he was born under a lucky sign but truth was he had no bloody clue when he was born at all. He could’ve been anything really and any associations made with whenever it was wouldn’t been a whole lot of hokey crap.

Living with Krista was like she was reliving her childhood days with her sisters. All three girls crammed together in one room. Her grandmother’s house wasn’t exactly huge. A small two bedroom flat in Atlanta. Perfect for an old lady with no husband, but not for three children and an old lady. It was either that or be thrown into the system, waiting for some family to be willing to foster all three girls. For a large part of it, everything was peaceful, but naturally, the sisters fought. Each time she found herself yelling at Risa for borrowing her black eyeliner and now returning it she reminded herself at least she wasn’t sitting in a children's home. Things could be worse. It was so clear, at least to Kitty, that Krista really really liked Mal. She would probably say her best friend was in love with Mal. Kitty hadn’t even managed to do the whole ‘If you hurt my best friend I will hurt you’ speech before it happened. The guy seemed built, probably had some muscles lying behind that t-shirt of his, but Kitty was a wolf. A big bad scary wolf with claws to match. She could take him down, with ease if he hurt Krista. But hopefully, it wouldn’t come to that. She could hear the excitement in Krista’s voice if she told her Mal wanted her college timetable, although she presumed he was only saying that to be polite. Surely he didn’t need to know where his girlfriend was at all times or maybe they were one of those couples that gave live updates to each other every two seconds. Kitty received many live updates from Krista throughout the day so Mal probably got similar text messages. Like if Krista saw a cute dog on campus or the lady at the kiosk forgot to charge her for a chocolate bar and Krista was now running back to tell the lady because that would be classed as stealing. Kitty would happily have devoured the free chocolate without dishing out a dollar. She would also do the same though. Furiously text back that she’d seen a hot boy who was super tall or she’d just ordered herself an overpriced caramel frappuccino. Mal probably didn’t text back with such excitement. She eased into her bed as Mal sat across from her. Crawling back into bed sparked her desire to have another nap. “Totally. She’s always saying she was lucky to meet me but it’s defs the other way around.” Krista didn’t share too much information about her family when the pair first met, only that she needed somewhere to crash and Kitty was more than happy to provide a spare bed for her. All that karma shit that her grandmother believed in had pushed its way into Kitty’s mind. The girl didn’t look like a threat either. She could barely keep her eyes open when they got home that first night. Mal didn’t exactly dive into his life story like Kitty wanted him to, but whatever. Some people weren’t as open as she was even though her life hadn’t been filled with sunshine and happiness. “Soooo I’m guessing you were born in England?” Or Wales or something. Somewhere over that side of the world. “Nah. I’m not really into that astrology shit to be honest.” Some stars aligning somewhere didn’t mean much to her. Nonetheless, she thought Mal and Krista made a good couple. At least that was the impression she got from how Krista described their relationship and her five-second meeting with Mal. “Why Mystic Falls?” Why leave England? A country that seemed so cool even the queen lived there. MAL BLACKTHORNE

Given that most of their experiments were of the barely legal sort, this wasn’t the first time he’d strolled around a college dorm. They tried to avoid dipping into them too obviously, although the occasional scouting mission under the guise of ‘teaching the young’uns how not to take 35 attempts to get blood drawn’ had gone on. Dr Blackthorne playing the doc with the gentle touch, happy to answer questions after on a stroll back to wherever they were going. Happy to follow an experiment out into the wilder bits of campus to bump the wild up at a little more, so to speak.
Mal’s mouth twitched at that memory. It hadn’t been a dorm room papered in posters and littered with the detritus of those still awkward teenaged years. A dirty plank floor, the chimeras quick bite of fear when he’d strolled in, all big brass balls as she’d filled the place with those lightning like bolts of electricity. Earning his reward for getting a bolt to the chest and continuing to tick. His just desserts, sweet as you like. Jesus, he better not even let it enter his head when Krista walked in. She was like a human sniffer dog for errant thoughts and words. Maybe in this case she’d be too distracted by the fact that he was here, waiting for her, to consider the fact that he’d already spent a good amount of time with her roommate.
Now, if she chose to claw Kitty’s other eye out …
Hmm.
Mal’s brows hitched slightly as he pasted on that smile, like he was so grateful to the girl on Krista’s behalf. Another nosy beak poking itself into his life because Krista had already latched on leach style (pretty fucking twisted considering he meant to be the one doing the blood sucking). ”Same, love, same.” A lie that burned on his tongue as Mal pursed his lips to look serious for a moment. He patted his fingers over her heart. ”I’m still glad she’s got ya around either way.” One of Krista’s only connections considering she’d practically bolted away from her parents to find out what’d put the fang marks on her neck and her brother was this nebulous ball of worry, hanging around and scowling over what his younger sister was getting herself into. Imagining how this sort of conversation would’ve gone with River (looked like the men in Krista’s life were all nautical in some bloody twisted way), Mal shuddered faintly.
Pushing the thought away, Mal reclined there, almost like he could just doze off. Legs crossed at the ankle, one foot dipping up and down in a slow rhythm to what was spinning round in his head. Kitty was probably just pulling that good friend act that had got people into trouble right back to time in memoriam, although it could’ve been Krista and that never ending stream of questions rubbing off on her. ”You do want it then.” Mal clucked his tongue, his fingers smoothing over his chin for a moment before they fell away to point at the girl. ”Well spotted, love. Portsmouth, you could practically call it England’s arsehole for how glam it is. Guessing you weren’t born here either, Mystic Falls I mean.” He flipped a finger to his ear, meaning the accent. He was an arsehole but not the racist kind. In fact one of the ballsiest women he'd ever met had actually floated over on a slow boat from China.
Dramatically Mal puffed out a breath of relief that huffed with a suppressed laugh. Kitty might not’ve been into the astrology shit but he was willing to bet Krista would be. Seeing all sorts of signs in the stars, if she could work out when he was born and that’d be an impossible clue, beyond the rough year he had no sodding clue. ”That’s a relief,” he admitted. ”You on a law course?” he asked with some amusement, his brow furrowing. Like he hadn’t bullshitted his way through a version of this a hundred times over. Nothing sus to see here. Mal let out a sigh, shuffling down a little further on the bed. ”Work. They needed someone to handle all those pesky blood draws and to be honest, I’m a fan of greener pastures, ‘specially on this side of the pond. Who wants to stick to the same boring scenery all the time. You got anythin’ to drink in here? Gettin’ dry from all the talkin’ if you get what I mean.” He winked at Kitty, hoping for the first time that Krista would hurry up and come busting through the door.

Kitty would never have used the word obsessed when describing how Krista felt about Mal. It was in the back of her mind, like at the very very back of her mind, but she would never utter that word. It didn’t matter anyway because it was a good obsession. The type you get when you fall in love with someone and those first few months you never want to leave their side. A healthy obsession and it was clear Mal felt the same about Kritsa. Her friend was always tapping away on her phone at all hours of the night, texting her boyfriend. Kitty loved seeing her best friend happy. Then in the midst of that was the worrying thought of what would happen if the pair broke up. Kitty was always optimistic, but she knew relationships could crumble over time. Her sisters sometimes came home with mascara smudges on their faces because their latest boyfriend had broken their hearts. Usually, it was a dent in their pride rather than a heartbreak, but she knew Krista’s heart would shatter into a trillion pieces if Mal dumped her. There would be too many pieces for Kitty to pick up alone. No amount of vodka and meaningless hook-ups would help her friend. It wasn’t going to happen though. If it was another girl in the room with Mal there was no denying Krista would jump to conclusions, but Kirsta trusted Kitty. At least that’s what Kitty thought. The theory had yet to be tested in such a way. She had zero interest in someone who’d already slept with her friend. Sloppy seconds, ew. A small smile tugged at her lips as he referred to her as love. So damn British, she loved it. The accent was so fun to listen to, just like Mandy’s accent. She could listen to her ramble all day every day and never get bored of the way she spoke. Mal was clearly making himself comfortable rather than hanging off the side of the bed, like he didn’t belong there. Kitty’s hands fell on the cover, playing with the fabric slightly as he told her where he was from. Portsmouth. She would be putting that into Google later as didn’t believe it wasn’t glam. Krista and her could stalk the place. “Atlanta.” She’d never even considered that her accent was different from everyone in Mystic Falls, but maybe Mal’s British ears could pick up on something she couldn’t. “My mom’s side is Japanese though.” It was obvious there was something else mixed in there along with American and Mal had been smart to add that he meant Mystic Falls, not America. Although it would take more than that to offend Kitty and it hadn’t been the first time someone had asked where she was actually from. When they were children her grandmother was always quick to snap back at those people. There would be no escaping the sharpness of her grandmother’s tongue at that point and it would always end the same way. The person apologising profusely with a glowing red face. Kitty quickly shook her head when Mal asked if she was doing a law course. Her knowledge lay with technology, not huge wordy books. “Nah. Games and interactive media design… computer shit.” Mal was a bit older than her and Krista, but surely he wasn’t old enough to be unfamiliar with technology. She nodded as she listened intently to Mal, absorbing each word, unlike Krista who sometimes seemed to zone out when people were talking to her. “Sure!” She slid down off her bed, making her way over to a mini fridge that sat on top of her drawers. It contained chocolate, one tomato that had probably seen better days, a block of cheese and a few beers. “Hope beer is okay.” She reached into the fridge, pulling two cans out. She threw one down on her bed before scrolling over to Mal to hand him the can. MAL BLACKTHORNE

A British accent, a little hint of the cheeky chappy and they always ended up going the same way – just a little mushy inside. It woulda been laughable if it hadn’t come in handy over the years. Nobody suspected the charming bloke, it was always the weird ones instead, the ones who scurried around the streets with their heads down, twitchy as a live wire. Confidence and that accent got you absolutely everywhere.
Krista probably hadn’t needed either that first time around. The girl was an anaconda. He’d wriggled up to her to get what he wanted, absolutely unaware that she was gonna slither around him and squeeze until he could barely breathe. Anybody who dared to put a finger or toe near him was gonna get it nipped off with that almost feral bite. That probably made this little visit a dicey prospect but would Krista honestly believe he’d taken a second look at her one eyed pal? Even for the purposes of feeding? Maybe. It wouldn’t have been the first time she’d dug her heels in and defended what was hers, with that guileful little smile on her face to excuse it.
Kitty had probably seen it often enough to know better than to dip her hand in the cookie jar – if she was so inclined to get a little more gooey so to speak – anticipating the teeth and ferocity that lurked within that cute little package. Compulsion, especially of the Doc’s enhanced sort – did wonders though. By the time Krista got back, Kitty would just be happily gabbing away to him, all twitching with excitement for her besties return.
Nodding his way towards it, that hum rolling out of him, Mal grinned. Atlanta, another of the Docs’ stops at one point, although they hadn’t been there long before some nosy old biddy had started poking into what was going on in the old bunker off the back of her property. One unanticipated call to the cops and they’d decided to pack up and move on, rather than – and it woulda been a bloody blessing for her given how puckered up she was – than dealing with her. Mal’s nose wrinkled at her caveat, a snort rolling out of it. ”I wasn’t quite going there, but I figured there was somethin’ there. Went there once – Japan that is – many, many moons again. Beautiful place.” Not all that welcoming to the Brits at the time though. Those borders had still been slammed tight around a lot of that area. Now they probably wouldn’t blink twice about him strolling about.
If he was gonna be a stereotypical arsehole, he’d have pointed out the aptness of what Kitty happened to be studying. All that cutting edge technology and stuff that the Doc probably understood a dozen times more of than he cared to. You didn’t need it when you were either just blood letting all day, or doing the heavy lifting. ”Sounds … cerebral …” he said in the end before he snorted. ”Although I guess it means you get to play with that computer shit all day, right? Getting As for getting to the boss level of Super Mario Brothers?” Maybe if she’d done that a little more often she’d have recognised the signs of the bad guy sitting right in front of her. These kids were blind to everything unless you shoved it under their noses though.
As clueless Kitty slid off the bed, Mal scooched to the edge of the bed, watching every move she made. What was in there was more than in his own fridge in his motel room but honestly he wasn’t stocking up with the ‘essentials’ in there, outside of the blood bags he needed when he didn’t have a clingy little blonde in bed with him. These two didn’t have any excuse. Mal looked up at Kitty, all warm smiles as he reached for the bottle. ”I’ll take a bottle … and a pint off of you too, Kitty. Don’t scream, don’t run. It’s just a little taste, I can promise you won’t even miss it.” Mal’s eyes had fixed onto her single one, his voice taking on that sharp edge of compulsion. He went to grab her shirt and pull her down to his mouth with the hand not holding the beer, black veins already crawling beneath his darkened eyes, his fangs snicking down into place.

‘Many, many moons ago.’ She’d never heard anyone say that before, but she hadn’t met that many British people. They had all these cool sayings that Americans didn’t. Did he mean many years ago? Surely. Her face lit up a little when Mal told her he’d been to Japan, she sat up a little straighter on her bed. She wondered how many years ‘many, many moons ago.’ was. If it was ten years ago that meant he could have been thirty, but maybe it was twenty years ago. There was no time to try and figure through any sort of maths in her head though, plus he could have been a kid when he went. Krista had always been somewhat vague on how old Mal was. She would kind of wash over it quickly by saying he was older. She never put an age on it and Kitty never pushed the subject any further. She wasn’t an idiot, it was clear her friend wanted to keep that to herself. Mal had a thick beard growing on his face, with a deep husky manly voice to match, so how old was he? Granted there were a few boys walking around campus who looked like they’d fought in World War One thanks to early puberty, but they still had that childish personality buried deep below. Mal didn’t seem childish, in fact, the very opposite. Her mind almost wandered off completely until she reminded herself they were talking about Japan. Well, Mal was saying he had been. “Really? I’ve never been to Japan! Which is kinda embarrassing because y’know but I’ve never had the chance to go.” By chance she meant money. Her grandmother put every last dollar into raising her grandchildren and there wasn’t any spending money left at the end of the week, “I wanna go once I graduate though.” Whether she actually would end up going was a completely different conversation. Maybe Kitty, Krista and Mal could go on one big trip there and he could show them around, but then it occurred to her she would be stuck as the third wheel which for most couples she wouldn’t have cared about but she imagined Krista would constantly have her arms wrapped around Mal’s neck. She chuckled quietly before shrugging her shoulders, “Kind of, but we do a lot of coding and programming and sometimes a bit of maths… I wish I could play video games and be graded on that… man, that would be so easy.” Tapping away at a few points then coming away with a degree? It sounded like a breeze. There were a few people that joined her course but dropped out within a few weeks because they failed to read up on anything about the course. At least Kitty skimmed the description of the course before applying. Nothing beat an ice cold beer from the fridge in the middle of the afternoon. “and a pint off of you too, Kitty. Don’t scream, don’t run. It’s just a little taste, I can promise you won’t even miss it.”The only vampire face she’d seen was Phoebe’s and that was after Kitty asked her friend to show her. The curiosity was itching at her and she wanted to know what their fangs actually looked like, but she was safe with Phoebe. Her friend wasn’t going to lurch forward and latch her teeth onto Kitty, but Mal wasn’t showing his for fun. He wanted to hurt Kitty. Instantly she grabbed Mal’s hand as he reached for her shirt, her grip tightening around his wrist as she twisted it to the right. “Nice try.” Her eye glowed blue as she glared down at him on the bed before fading back to normal. Anger soared through her system, along with shock. Krista’s boyfriend was a vampire and not a nice vampire like Phoebe. A bad one. She let go of his wrist, throwing his hand back towards him. She couldn’t even form any words to say to him, her throat was like sandpaper. Fuck, she needed to tell Krista. She bolted for the door, throwing it open before storming out of the room. She paused outside her room for a second, before marching off towards Phoebe’s dorm. MAL BLACKTHORNE - the end!
