Even her picture she posted on social media didn’t get a reaction out of Remzi. She was expecting him to be blowing up her phone by now, asking who was taking her out for dinner, but nothing. Radio silence. Usually one of them would have broken by now and texted the other. Leah refused to break, not when it was Remzi who owed her the apology. This time was different though. They’d screwed each other over countless times before but he went and involved Grey this time. She could have ended him there and then in that alleyway. Ripping his heart from his chest, holding it proudly as the beats faded out and Remzi fell at her feet, but she couldn’t. She just couldn’t bring herself to be the one to kill him and she saw that flash of fear in his eyes as her fingers clutched onto his heart. He too thought it was all over. Maybe if she had plucked up the courage to eliminate the vampire she wouldn’t have been sitting at the bar in the Grill, looking at her phone every 30 minutes. Nothing. Not even a like on that stupid Instagram post. She was always the one calling things off. The one to break hearts and leave the men feeling empty, but now she was feeling empty. Fuck, she missed Remzi. It was a strange feeling to her, one which she didn’t enjoy. Leah couldn’t even drown her sorrows either like a normal human. Despite knocking back countless shots she felt nothing. Leah didn’t even bother to scan the bar, looking for someone to wake up next to. She’d gone down to the Ruby Slipper every few nights in the hope of ‘bumping into’ Remzi, each time wearing a figure-hugging dress. She wanted him to come back, crawl back to her and grovel for her forgiveness. This wasn’t going as planned. She’d even been tempted to contact him and suggest starting anew, then disgusted in herself for even considering it. Another shot was put down on the bar in front of her as she took a sip from her espresso martini. Leah lifted it up, ready to knock it back. “Oi, I didn’t ask for sambuca” She called out to the bartender who was already disappearing into the back, “Fuck sake” She inhaled sharply pulling her eyes away from the door in which the employee disappeared through. She noticed a blonde standing next to her at the bar, “Here. Drink this” She slid the shot over to the girl, “I hate sambuca” Leah quickly waved at another bartender who was walking past, “A shot of whiskey, please. Make sure it’s whiskey and not sambuca” She glanced back over at the blonde, “We’re gonna do some shots together because I’m having a shitty day” There was a quiet tap as another shot glass was set down in front of her. The reaper reached for it, observing the liquid inside. Certainly whiskey, “Here’s to being hot and single because men don’t deserve us” Did she even deserve Remzi? The only one who’d stood by her side, time and time again. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ WANDERING IN THE DIRECTION of the Grill, Krista thought of Mal almost the whole way there. It wasn’t bad ‘cause nobody else could hear her thoughts, right? Every so often, her mind drifted to school, Kitty, River and her parents before making a full circle back to her first-ever boyfriend. Okay, so technically he wasn’t her boyfriend yet, but only she knew that, and that’s why she could say it freely in her head. Telling Kitty, at this point, that they weren’t actually dating would just be super embarrassing, and she wasn’t gonna go there. It was called wishful thinking. Or… being positive or something, like ask and you shall receive. (That’s why she prayed on it every night before bed. She was praying anyway, so she might as well ask God to give her a super hot vampire boyfriend, right? One in particular, obviously. Would God like Mal? Probably not, but she conveniently disregarded that. He better not try to do stuff to keep them apart, though, ‘cause then she’d be super pissed and probably wouldn’t renounce her religion, but she might think about it.)
Aaaaanyway. Her mind was moving a mile a minute by the time she reached the Grill, telling them she was there to pick up an order. The hostess directed her to wait by the bar, so Krista diligently followed instructions, sidling up next to a blonde woman who, after only a few seconds of Krista being there, started complaining about her drink. Her hazel eyes were following the bartender who disappeared when the lady turned to her, forcing Krista’s attention in her direction. She probably should’ve known better than to accept a drink from a stranger, but what could be so wrong about this? The last time she’d had a drink with somebody at a bar, it’d turned out really well, so… why not?
“I’ve never heard of sambuca.” Krista commented idly before plopping down on her stool. She took the shot all at once, like Kitty had taught her, and immediately her eyes burned with tears. “Oh gosh,” She coughed, face screwing up in disgust. That was worse than rum and coke, and Krista didn’t think anything could be. Looking back to the woman, all dishevelled and a little green around the gills, Krista blinked away the rest of her tears and cleared her throat uncomfortably. She tried to listen despite, y’know, feeling like her throat was on fire.
‘We’re gonna do some shots together because I’m having a shitty day.’
Well, she’d certainly been in stranger situations (and had the bite marks to prove it), so this shouldn’t be that terrible. Plus, she knew what it was like to have bad days, and it must’ve been super s-word-y if this lady was turning to strangers for comfort. “Okay!” Krista smiled, wanting to help in any way she could. Her dad always talked about being there for others in his sermons, and this was definitely one of those times she should be. “One for me, too, please.” She said to the bartender, earning a winged brow but no verbal argument. Krista wasn’t sure what whiskey tasted like either, but she’d have to start doing all this at some point, right?
Hot and single? Was she hot? Krista didn’t consider herself to be either of those things, but this girl was definitely beautiful, so she’d take her word for it. “Yeah!” Chiming out her agreement, she clinked her new shot glass to the other blonde’s before drinking it and almost immediately regretting it. “Eeeeeeew.” Krista gagged, getting her glass back on the bar before she did a full body wiggle, like a shiver going straight up her spine at the awfulnenss of it. “Does all alcohol taste bad?” Krista asked with a frown, wondering if it was just her or if she’d eventually get over it.
“Also,” She began, leaning towards the stranger for a moment before teetering back, grinning like she had some big secret to tell. “I’m not totally single. But I still think you should do what makes you happy ‘n stuff. So… why’re you having a shitty day? I’m here to listen if you wanna talk ‘bout it.” Krista wasn’t the best listener in the world, but she didn’t really know that, and she’d offer her services anyway. She wanted to help, and that’s what mattered most, right?

Leah had never really taken on board the whole with every action, comes a reaction. Consequences to her own actions. None of that drove home with her. She didn’t care about consequences or how someone might feel because of her actions. It was an uphill struggle with her teachers at school. When she went after Grey she wasn’t thinking about what might happen next. Nowhere in her mind did she think he’d turn on her and she’d be the one dead. She considered herself to be unbeatable and now technically she was. Later that evening, after ramming her hand through Remzi’s chest, she almost cried. Almost. She could feel hot tears beginning to sting her eyes as she made her way to pick up the next soul. They were so close to falling too, but she forced it all back in. Pushing it back down into that tiny part of her that harboured all those weak emotions. Sadness, regret and remorse. She wishes slammed shots down would help her forget everything. Just for a few hours. Anger seeped out of her as the bartender put the wrong drink down. He was about to find himself at the tail end of Leah’s bad mood. One simple touch would have this idiot dead at her knees and pulled in front of Death to explain her actions. So many fucking rules to follow as a Reaper and everyone knew she hated. Once she was done with Grey it was tempting to just go rogue. Idiot that stupid little bell that rang in her mind all the damn time. For now, she was ignoring it, focusing on herself. Having some ‘me’ time by slamming back shots and forcing this poor next to her to drink as well. Leah’s mouth fell open in shock as the other girl announced she’d never heard of sambuca, “Are you Amish or something?” She watched as the blonde knocked back the shot, “Yeah it’s nasty stuff. Tastes like paint” She had spent far too many nights as a teenager sipping on sambuca with her friends down the park. It left an awful taste in her mouth, a taste that she had forced onto the other girl. “Took it like a champ though” Leah added. Thankfully the girl agreed to join her for a drink. The downfall of having no female friends to turn to in moments like this. She no longer had a group of girlfriends who did each other’s makeup whilst gossiping about boys and sipping on wine. She didn’t bother with any of her friends from school once she left, then she went and got herself killed, so most people back in Kent assume she’s dead. Hot and single. The way Leah was adamant to remain until her final day on Earth. She clinked her glass against the other girl’s, knocking the whiskey back with ease. The stranger didn’t handle the whiskey well either, letting out a shudder shortly after the liquid ran down her throat. “Not a fan of the spirits then?” She asked, leaning over to take a sip of her espresso martini, “Maybe you’d be better off with something like… Baileys or some kind of schnapps thing” This girl seemed so innocent and sweet. Not the type of person who should have been associating with Leah. A person who aimed to bring out the absolute worst in people, like she’d done with Remzi countless nights back in LA. “Not totally single? So you’re like sleeping with someone but you’re not official?” Like Leah and Remzi, but probably less toxic by the looks of this girl. She let out a long sigh. “A guy I was involved with stabbed me in the back and I told him to never speak to me again, but… I didn’t exactly mean it. The only reason he did it was because I said something cruel to him” Typical behaviour for the pair, but maybe she was the one who had gone too far, to begin with by bringing Raik up. Leah quickly grabbed the attention of a passing bartender, “What do you want?” She glanced over at the blonde. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ YEAH, NO CRAP. THAT stuff was the worst thing she’d ever tasted in her life. She thought she was making a friend but was this lady really trying to kill her?! If she was then… well, apparently, she was just Krista’s type. “No.” Krista sucked a breath in through her teeth and frowned, “I used to wanna be Amish when I was younger. Now, though? No-freakin’-way.” Krista was enjoying her freedom way too much to have it taken away━she still admired the Amish devotion, though. “Thanks! I thought it was gonna tear my throat out.” Snickering, she was happy to join anyway, even though this lady was only interested in more of that gut-rotting stuff. Whaaatever, this was the whole reason Krista had left home! Experiences like this!
“Schnapps… like peach schnapps?” She’d heard of that in a movie or something once, Krista was sure of it. Hopefully, one of those two suggestions wouldn’t be so flippin’ awful; otherwise, Krista was pretty much totally screwed in the alcohol department. Ugh, did that make her seem like a kid? ‘Cause she didn’t wanna be a baby, especially not in front of Mal━he had to think she was, like, cool and older and stuff otherwise he’d probably just stop liking her. Sometimes having a not-boyfriend sucked.
‘Not totally single? So you’re like sleeping with someone but you’re not official?’
Especially in times like this. What the heck was she supposed to say to that?! “Um… well, no━no. He’s my boyfriend. I just meant that I’m not single, but I still wanna have fun and drink with you!” Krista leaned into the edge of the bar, slipping in a quick, “I’m Krista, by the way, since we’re drinking buddies now.” She giggled. Oh, gosh, wait━ did that make her sound like a little kid?
In any case, the stranger-turned-nameless-bestie went on, and Krista furrowed her brow as she concentrated, nodding slowly. (She was working on her active listening skills.) “Well, just ‘cause you said somethin’ mean doesn’t give him the right to go stabbin’ you in the back. I mean, unless it was really bad what you said, but still. And aren’t guys supposedta know that ‘I don’t wanna ever see you again’ doesn’t actually mean ‘I don’t wanna ever see you again’?! Like, why are they so dumb?” She puffed, though she couldn’t imagine a situation in which someone would be serious enough to mean it━Krista just hadn’t had enough life experience yet.
Glancing at the woman, then the bartender, and back to the woman, Krista was beaming again. “How ‘bout one of the things you suggested before? Baileys or Peach Schnapps or somethin’? I’m just followin’ your lead here.” Laughing excitedly, she did a little bob in her chair.
“Have you tried callin’ him or anything?” Krista asked after a moment, trying to go back to the topic she loved most━boy talk. And she had absolutely little to no concept of ‘playing the game,’ as reaching out seemed like the most obvious option. If she wanted to talk to Mal, she usually wouldn’t hesitate to text him… like, a lot. Especially if he didn’t reply fast enough.

Okay, she was joking with the whole Amish thing but there was a frown on Leah’s face when the other girl mentioned that she wanted to be Amish. “Weird” She muttered, as the frown faded from her face. Each to their own and all that, but Leah couldn’t think of anything worse. Living in fields and wearing a dress that went past your knees? She didn’t even wear a dress past her knees in the freezing cold winter. The less fabric that was on her body, the better. Usually, she would be doing it for Remzi. A tingling in her skin as his eyes would be fixed on her. Admiring every curve on her body knowing she would be his later, after all the arguing. Leah nodded, “Yeah, it tastes like sugar. Very sweet” Disgusting as far as she was concerned but probably something this strange would like given her reaction to the sambuca. Although it was an understandable reaction, the smell of it was still lingering in the air causing her to reach over and push the glass away towards the employee. There was still the tiniest drop left. This girl was so full of life. Giggling and responding to whatever Leah said in a cheery voice. Again, weird, but she wasn’t going to say that out loud. “Right…” She said, dragging the word out slightly as she spoke. She wasn’t keen on the phrase drinking buddies, in fact, she wasn’t keen on the phrase buddies, but being a total bitch had got her into this mess with Remzi. “I’m Leah” She responded, trying to add a bit of cheer into her voice to match Krista’s. What she said to Remzi wasn’t really bad, she could have said a lot worse. Thinking back, maybe he completely overreacted to the situation. Obviously, she wasn’t going to choose Raik over Remzi. The guy was boring and she told Remzi this a thousand times before. He came out for drinks and that, but always kept an eye on the time and insisted the pair go home before it got too late. She was tugging one side of Remzi whilst his brother was tugging at the other. Leah usually won though, dangling the inviting to bed in front of his face every time. “Right? Like maybe for a few days then come back and beg for my forgiveness” Why the fuck wasn’t Remzi doing that? Leah glanced at the bartender, looking back at Krista for a split second. Was she bobbing in her chair? Like a dog whenever the word walk is muttered. She quickly knocked the rest of her drink back, “Two Baileys with ice” She watched the bartender disappear, “You don’t shot this, by the way, you just drink it as normal” Krista didn’t come across as a veteran drinker. “Fuck no. I’m not calling him. He can call me, he has my number” As tempting as it was, she would never stoop that low. She knew he would crack soon, he always did. “He’ll call me soon anyway” She spoke with confidence as the drinks were placed down on the bar. “How long have you and your boyfriend been together? Where did you meet?” She wasn’t particularly bothered, but that's what buddies did right? Show an interest in one another's life. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA REPEATED HER NAME softly, nodding once she was done. “Leah. I like that! That’s really pretty.” Leah, who was really pretty and honestly didn’t deserve boy problems, but Krista could see why she had them. She was just too good-looking, so if anybody was gonna, like, have drama with guys, then it’d be Leah, ‘cause of course she had a guy. It just made sense.
Nodding lightly, she silently hoped that Leah’s kinda-boyfriend came back and did beg for her forgiveness, ‘cause Leah just seemed like she deserved it. Krista had known her for thirty seconds, so nautrally, she knew everything about Leah and wanted only the best for her new friend.
“Oh… okay. Sounds good. Shots are sorta… like, all at once, y’know? They hurt my throat.” Sipping something sugary and not as terrifying seemed a lot better.
‘Fuck no. I’m not calling him. He can call me, he has my number. He’ll call me soon anyway.’
Raising her brows at Leah, Krista’s eyes went a little wide at all the confidence exuding from her. She just didn’t get that, like, how could someone be so sure of themselves? She had to have a bunch of guys wrapped around her finger━but Krista liked the idea that there was one who was super special. That was sweet. She hoped it worked out for them. “How do you know?” She asked, staring innocently, “Like… how are you sure he’s gonna call? How do you make he’s gonna call is what I mean, I guess.” Krista always called Mal. Sometimes he got to her first, like when he came around while she was in class or busy or somethin’, but it wasn’t super often. She didn’t usually give him the chance to call first, but still.
Oooh, now questions like this got difficult. Krista could just go with what she was telling Kitty, which was that they kinda-sorta got together the first time she remembered them meeting. Which… oh, wow, it’d been so long! “Well, we met in May at Campbell’s Bar.” Nervously, Krista picked up her glass for something to do. She lifted it and took a sip, scrunching her nose at it. “Oh.” She puffed. “It’s not as bad. It sorta tastes like coffee.” Suddenly, Krista remembered spending nights in a coffee shop necking frappucinos to keep her up, and she wasn’t sure how she felt about it. Like… proud of how far she’d come, maybe.
“Aaaaanyway. So, we’ve been together for a while now. He’s really cool. Older, too, which is… cool.” Like, one-hundred-and-something, but still. And the bite marks on her neck━on the opposite side of Leah━proved just how cool he was. Some people didn’t think so, but Krista willingly let him take chunks out of her, so it was all good━so long as he kept bein’ at least kinda nice.

Leah genuinely couldn’t recall the last time she’d spoken to another female about her boy's problems. She was somewhat lacking in the female friend department for obvious reasons, but there had been times at school when she and her friends would giggle and chat about boys in their year. Those people all assumed she was dead now, leaving her to try and find new friends. It was impossible though, namely because of the person she was, but she was trying her best to be nice to the blonde next to her. There was a genuine smile on her face when Krista complimented her name, “Thanks.” The other girl's world was clearly made up of sunshine, rainbows and Amish. Obviously, Leah’s brain couldn’t process it, but it seemed Krista was happy enough to listen “Shots can be brutal.” She agreed with a nod. They served one purpose and that was to get an individual drunk therefore it was wasted on her. She suspected a few shots would knock Krista sideways. The girl didn't strike her as a party girl. So she didn’t know for certain that Remzi was going to call or text her but the probability was high. Ridiculously high. Past experience I guess. He always comes back to me.” She spoke with confidence about that. “Plus he’s never gonna get better than me and he knows that.” Krista's line of questioning did have doubts slipping into Leah’s mind for a moment. Remzi had never gone this long without contacting her, but there was no way he’d be able to walk away from whatever they had going on. She was willing to bet money on that. Maybe he'd lost his phone or something stupid. Leah slowly sipped on her drink, listening to Krista but also trying to figure out how long she and Remzi had been fucking up each other lives. A small flip in her stomach when she realised it had been over a year. A thin smile on her face when Krista announced her boyfriend was older which apparently meant he was cool. Remzi had a few years on Leah but the guy had about as much common sense as a toddler. “How old is he?” She asked eagerly, leaning on the bar with her elbow and facing Krista. Ready to absorb her gossip. “Have you like declared your love to one another?” The only thing Leah and Remzi had done so far is declared their hatred for one another. Usually seconds before falling into bed. Now her feelings towards him were somewhat mixed up and nothing made sense. She told him she hated him, but now he wasn’t with her she felt kind of lonely. ━ i can't get you out of my head ━ SHE STARED AT THE other woman in absolute awe. Leah was, like, twenty times more confident than Krista thought she’d ever be. Could Mal get better than Krista? Probably. The thought made her kinda sick. Then she was frowning, jealousy burning in her gut without actual cause. Ugh, now she was upset. Freakin’ Mal.
It also sucked that Leah didn’t have any pointers━her boyfriend just seemed to crawl back all the time. Wait… was Mal the Leah in this situation? “But… how do you know he’ll never get better than you? I mean, I’m gonna assume you don’t just pick up crappy guys.” Wow, she said the c-word. Mystic Falls really was changing her.
She didn’t seem to grasp the concept of confidence. Krista just wasn’t… the kinda woman Leah was, but she’d like to be. Life seemed better that way━maybe Mal would like her more, too. Maybe he’d start calling her all the time. Ugh, but the idea of pulling back or making him wait for it upset her, ‘cause what if he lost interest or found somebody else? Oh, gosh, she hated this.
Krista took a really big gulp of her drink and tucked her hands into her lap. She was always happy to talk about Mal, but it didn’t feel so good right now. And how the heck was she supposed to answer Leah’s question? “He’s, um,” Instinctively, she reached up to pick at the cuts on her neck, on the opposite side of Leah. “He’s in his, like…” Okay, but if she didn’t know exactly, then it sorta seemed like she was lying about being his girlfriend━or that she was a shitty one. No, no, she didn’t like that at all. “He’s thirty-eight.” She smiled proudly, as if lying was a good thing (sorry, Jesus).
‘Have you like declared your love to one another?’
Krista snorted before she could stop herself, but then quickly shook her head and smiled politely. “No, I wish. I don’t think he… I dunno if he’s ready for that.” But did Krista love him? It really felt like it. The mere thought had her cheeks burning, stomach doing flips.
Turning to face Leah now, Krista picked at another scab on her neck, then took a swig from her cup. It didn’t help with how warm she was feeling. “I would totally, totally fall for him if it was somethin’ we, like, did━” Her inexperience (and age) was obvious, but Krista didn’t know how else to explain it.
“Do ya love your boyfriend?” She asked, “Or… not-boyfriend.” Krista smiled sheepishly. It was totally possible to love someone you weren’t actually dating. Krista didn’t know a lot, but she knew that. She’d loved lots of people who didn’t love her back. Her psychiatrist told her it was this whole thing ‘bout her childhood or whatever.
“Uh, I know they suck, but should we get more shots anyway? ‘Cause we have to celebrate bein’ awesome?” Krista giggled, figuring Kitty could wait for the packaged food that had been placed in front of Krista a few moments before. She had a new friend now, and she seriously didn’t wanna miss out on drinking alcohol and bonding.

There was a look on Leah’s face of disbelief that Krista had asked her such a question. She knew because it went without saying that she was the best Remzi was going to get. It was obvious to everyone and she didn’t need to explain that. She had men falling at her feet and Remzi should count himself lucky that she constantly returned to him. Always finding herself in his bed despite telling herself time and time again she wouldn’t. “He won’t. I tick all his boxes.” Well, he ticked all her boxes. There was no way Remzi wanted some weak spineless innocent girl in his bed. He needed someone like Leah in his life. More and more doubt was sliding into her mind thanks to this blonde girl. She hated it. Remzi did care about her and he would come back to her. That’s what kept churning over in her head with each passing day that he didn’t text her. She couldn’t tell herself that Remzi was otherwise engaged or maybe dead somewhere in a ditch because he had been posting pictures on social media. Maybe she should have liked one of the posts. Pushing herself to the forefront of his mind. No, fuck no. That was desperate, a trait that Leah never embodied. Wait, had Remzi dumped her? No. That was impossible. No one dumped her. She was the one who broke men’s hearts and left them in pieces. Thirty-eight? Leah’s eyes darted to Krista, as she took in her features carefully. The girl didn’t look that old. Maybe twenty-five at an absolute push. “Good for you. Older men usually know what they’re doing.” Well, Remzi did. “No, I wish…”— So sweet. The girl clearly loved the man and he didn’t exactly feel the same. At least not yet. Classic. Leah shuffled a little on her seat, leaning on the bar as she looked at Krista’s neck. First off she was grossed out that Krista was picking a scab until she realised it was bite marks. Her lips formed a thin smile as her attention was pulled back to Krista. The L word again. “No.” She answered abruptly, “Not at all.” But she did care about Remzi, which was like a few steps behind love. “We’re not on that wavelength, it's more of a friends with benefits type situation.” She called him when she was lonely and he’d do the same to her. Blowing up each other's phones at the end of the night when they fancied a bit of company. Shots. Now the girl was talking in her language. “Yes.” She quickly grabbed the attention of someone walking past them, “Four shots of black tequila.” Leah looked over at Krista, “Coffee and tequila. They’re actually not bad.” She waited until the bartender was out of earshot before turning her full body to Krista. “So this boyfriend of yours is he actually thirty-eight or is he a hundred and thirty-eight? You should really use better concealer to cover up those bite marks otherwise you’ll find yourself being integrated by hunters.” The employee returned with their shots and Leah reached for one, pushing it across the bar towards Krista. She then picked one up for herself. “Mine likes to bite too.” She gave Krista a little wink before chuckling. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA WAS, LIKE, REALLY proud of herself when Leah said ‘good for you’ for getting an older man ‘cause it was super dope. She felt all mature and in a real relationship when she was with Mal, especially ‘cause her parents would absolutely hate him. And screw them for thinking she was a bad kid to begin with, ‘cause it wasn’t her fault she’d gotten snacked on. All the times after it were, though.
She sat a little higher in her chair and beamed at Leah, nodding slowly. “Ohhhh.” Friends with benefits. That sounded really sucky, but Leah prob’ly liked it. Was that… what Mal thought they were? No, no, he had to know they weren’t, right? Krista thought she’d made it pretty obvious. Instead of being a good listener, she was thinking about herself again, but she really did try.
Coffee and tequila. Sounded kinda gross, but everything else Leah had ordered so far sounded gross. “Well, that Baileys wasn’t half bad, so maybe this won’t be so yucky, either.” She laughed sheepishly, still absently picking at her scabs and watching the bartender walk away before Leah’s words made her stop altogether.
With hazel eyes as wide as saucers, Krista’s hand dropped from her neck, jaw hanging slack in awe. She was a little worried at first, Mal was gonna kill her if she let someone find out, but then she was just super happy she had someone to talk to about this! She literally couldn’t say anything to anyone else, but now Leah━her new (second) bestie━totally got what she was going through!
“Whoa… that’s so… yeesh, I’m super excited right now. I haven’t been able t’tell anyone.” She laughed, picking up her shot glass based on nothing but distraction and mirroring Leah’s movements. Krista clinked it against Leah’s and then took it quickly, doing her regular face scrunch at the feeling. She worked through it, though, eager to keep talking about their vamp boyfriends. “Hoooonestly, I don’t even wanna use concealer. I like ‘em. They remind me of him,” Looking like a human chibi, Krista blushed as she thought about Mal, though her face fell a bit when she thought about hunters. She turned her googly eyes down, at the bartender, and then back to Leah, whispering, “Hunters? Like… would they wanna hurt me for gettin’ it on with a vampire? Or… hurt him?” The idea alone had her feeling sick. Krista took another big gulp of the glass of Baileys and tried to work through it.
There were a few more drinks, a myriad of black tequila shots, and Krista had totally forgotten about dinner and that she was trying to make Leah feel better. She leaned an elbow against the bar, cheek smushed into her hand, and stared sadly into the endless depth in front of her. “Does yours ever… kinda act like he doesn’t care? ‘Cause sometimes I think Mal hates me.” She huffed out a breath, rolling her head to look at Leah without lifting it. “Sometimes he just… bites me━” Her stage-whisper wasn’t hiding anything from those around them, “━and we, ya know, and then he just leaves. We’ll be at his place, too! I mean, I lost my virginity━” Another stage-whisper, “━to this guy, like, I kinda-sorta-always feel like I’d die without him, he makes my stomach hurt, but I don’t wanna push him away, y’know?” She sniffled like she was crying, but her eyes were dry. So was her mouth. Her tongue kept sticking to the roof of it.
“I dunno why you’d ever wanna let yours go or wait for him t’call you. They’re so… special. Like, what if he never calls again? You said you’re perfect for him but… but… what if you’re not? And ya lose him ‘cause ya don’t care enough?” Her head lolled back to stare emptily at the back of the bar again. “I dunno… maybe you’d jus’ find another guy. I don’t want Mal to find another girl. I think my heart would jus’... die.”

Even though she described it as a friends with benefits situation she and Remzi were barely friends. She just about knew the basic details about him, but it didn’t extend too far. She wanted to keep him at arm's length. He knew bits about her as well, but only the stuff she chose to tell, some of which was wrapped with lies. There were no benefits in their situation currently either. He was bringing her nothing but irritation and frustration. It was bizarre that Krista was walking around with those bite marks visible on her neck. Her boyfriend was obviously an idiot for letting her do that. Remzi was an idiot but at least he didn’t let his chew toys walk around town with scabs on their neck. Krista didn’t even bother denying what Leah said either nor was she even compelled to not speak about her vampire boyfriend. This guy really didn’t care if people found out about him. The conversation took another turn towards weird when Krista said she didn’t want to use concealer, as if those marks were some kind of romantic gesture from him to her. “That’s… cute?” Far from cute. She would have staked Remzi for leaving a mark on her perfect unblemished skin. Not that it was possible. “They’d go for him.” She spoke matter of factly, but the look on Krista’s face was amusing. “They target those who are considered predators.” She kept her voice low as she spoke, her hand reaching for another shot Soon Krista’s words were slowing words as the alcohol took effect. Mal was her boyfriend's name and now she was unloading her worries onto Leah. She sat and listened because it was better than thinking about Remzi. “Sometimes, but he does.” Even though he told Leah he didn’t give a shit about her, his actions said otherwise. Whenever other men were with her on the dancefloor he’d interject. “You need to tell yourself that you’re the one in control of the relationship. For starters, stop letting him bite you so much and stop giving him what he wants. Make him beg for it. You have something he wants, in fact, no he needs, blood.” Despite the other blonde not keeping her voice low Leah tried to do so. “I don’t let Remzi drink from me.” She would tell him to get down on his knees and beg for her blood. “Next time you should get up and leave before he does. Don’t text him back straight away, make him wait.” For a moment she imagined her life without Remzi. Picturing him with another girl, not just sexually. A girl he really cared about and thought the world of. “I’d rather lose him than contact him first.” Which wasn’t exactly true. She’d find another way to get to Remzi, without typing a message out. Leah sighed softly at Krista’s comment, “Your heart won’t die. You’ll find someone better and trust me there are people out there better than this Mal character.” She held back though rather than launching into a million reasons why this Mal guy wasn’t as perfect as Krista thought. ━ i can't get you out of my head ━ IT WAS NICE THAT Leah knew her not-boyfriend cared. Like, she was totally sure. It was nice that Leah… yeah, Krista thought she was really nice, especially because Krista could start talking about herself and the conversation went on without a hitch. But she was right. Krista needed to start stickin’ up for herself; she needed to be more… more like Leah! She needed to start showing Mal who was boss!
But… Krista kinda didn’t wanna be the boss. She liked that Mal knew what he was doing, she was just gettin’ all full of herself and stuff. Pumped up with liquid confidence and a new friend who said all the right things. Krista nodded along with a furrowed brow, fully immersed in Leah’s advice. “Yeah… yeah!” She nodded sharply, then quickly lost her self-reliance again. “But… what if he jus’ feeds from s’mebody else then? I don’t… I don’t wan’ him t’just replace me.” Krista nearly whimpered. And she liked when Mal fed from her; she liked that he relied on her a little bit, it made her feel wanted, and she was more than happy to help. Maybe that was her love language━acts of service. Krista was sure that it usually didn’t mean letting your vampire boyfriend suck your blood, but still.
Lose him? The idea made Krista feel sick. No way, she could never be like Leah, and she wasn’t gonna keep pretendin’ like she could be. And there couldn’t be anyone better than Mal. The very idea had her brows knotting together again, a deep frown pulling at her lips. This was where she drew the line. She wasn’t gonna get anyone better. “No.” Krista puffed, “No, I really like him… he ain’t perfect but neither am I. I just gotta… be more strong. Like you said. Then everything will work out. Yeah!” Riling herself up now, Krista nodded firmly and pulled out her phone. She had to lean sideways on the stool to get it out of her pocket━and nearly fell off━but eventually she was dialling Mal’s number and pressing it to her cheek.
“Yeah… Yeah, ‘m gonna tell him what I really think.” Krista puffed (mostly to herself) while it was ringing, and as soon as he picked up, she started on her drunken spiel.
“Lih… Lissen, Mal. Mal-ee.” Like calling him by a silly nickname would knock him down a peg. “I just found out ‘bout hunters and how they’re a thing and, like, I would totally protect you fr’m some.” It sounded a bit like ‘frrmsmm’. “But I bet you wouldn’t protect me. And that sucks. ‘Cause you’re my fave. That means faaaavourite, old man. Ugh, you’re like a grandpa… but I like that.” She said in a hushed voice before continuing normally, “An’ my new friend... I just met her at the Grill ‘n I was suppos’dta get dinner for me ‘n Kitty━” Her explanation came out as though it was one word, “━says, like, I’ve got all the goods ya want, so I’m in charge. So you should be nicer…” Krista sighed heavily, “I’m gonna be sick. I miss you.” She whispered the last part, though, ‘cause she was pretty sure Leah would get mad at her for not stickin’ to her guns. It didn’t matter anymore; Krista was really thankful for all Mal had done━y’know, showin’ her she could be her own woman and stuff━and she didn’t wanna lose him. But maybe she could be a little less… clingy. If she could ever manage it.

Holding the vial up to the light, Mal shook it and grimaced. The light shone through it the usual way, giving it a ruby glow that was a literal red flag to a very hungry bull, but no sodding way was he popping the lid off for a taste. Or from the other half dozen that stood like good little marines, waiting at the rail to be shot first. Idiots, the bloody lot of them.
He puffed out his breath, popping the top off to drop a sample onto a slide. It wasn’t like he couldn’t have just told them what the college kids were hopped up on. A sip would’ve done it, if he was feeling masochistic, a sniff if he wasn’t. Someone had got their hands on a particularly potent dose of ketamine. He wouldn’t have been surprised if it’d come from the veterinary lab at Whitmore. Pocket just one vial during class and you had yourself a party in a glass bottle, until you took a little too much. Then you roared towards the hospital in three ambulances, doubled up because the paramedics were worried you were gonna end up choking on the pizza or ramen, or whatever passed for lunch in a cess pit like the dorms, before they got back there.
Mal slipped the slide into the machine that would give him all the fancy answers he could’ve told them plain and simple, if the ER doc, the one with the dark eyes and the constant racing heartbeat, wasn’t pacing around in the lab behind him. Glancing over his shoulder, Mal smiled sweetly, tipping his head towards the machine. ”Won’t be a minute. You wanna take a seat? You’re givin’ me whiplash, son.” Like he looked every part of his two hundred and some years. The bloke had already been giving him them little sideways looks since Krista had come into the ER looking for him. Suspicion, but the sort the bloke had no real proof of – or no real idea about.
Wasn’t like he was a human seventy year old taking advantage of a girl barely out of high school. This bloke was probably already older than he’d been when Josiah had turned him. When you could live for a thousand years or more, everything ended up relative.
When you had a woman like Krista around, everything could turn on a dime too. Just a little too much attention and she was like one of those kids, desperate for another taste of something.
When her ringtone started pumping out of his phone – special, although not for the reason she probably thought – Mal almost buried his face in his hands and groaned. Yes, he shoulda been out of work already, but this was special circumstances. Yes, he’d probably need to feed when he got back. No, he wasn’t telling her that with Dr Decker standing over his shoulder.
The smile he gave the man as he pushed to his feet was practically saccharine, thank God the machine beeped then and saved him having to make an excuse to slip out – he’d learned it was better not to drag things out with Krista if he wanted it peaceful. Decker leaned past him, snatching the print out as it emerged. ”Just as I thought, mate. Ketamine. Good luck with ‘em …. Byeee.” The farewell was dragged out cheerfully before he punched the button on the phone, this wasn’t gonna be half as sweet.
Mal grimaced just a little, anticipating this. ”Alright love, I won’t be much longer…” Especially not now.
You what?
Krista hadn’t waited for him to speak, she was already babbling over the low sound of a crowded place. Trilling out his name like it was a song before she practically outed him, in that public place. He sank back down in his seat, tipping his head back to cover his face. Hunters. The Doc was gonna shit bricks if he found out. There’d already been a thin line he was skating on and this was rapidly tipping over it. ”Krista … Krista … love, shut up …” She wasn’t though. The rate at which she flip-flopped back and forth between parts of this story was enough to give him whiplash. Out for dinner, meeting a new friend, probably telling her too much while whoever it was got her slaughtered. He could hear the sloppy in her voice even before she told him she was gonna be sick. There went his dinner.
In an instant, Mal was pushing to his feet. He flipped off the machine, abandoned the other samples – what was the point in testing them when they already had their answers and Decker had gone off to play hero – and marched out the door. ”Do me a favour and stay right there with your goods, alright, Krista? Don’t you move, and don’t let that friend of yours move either.” He was gonna have a word with this friend, maybe use them for dinner instead while he taught them what happened to manipulators. Hanging up, he shoved it into his pocket.
The minute he’d been out of the hospital he’d been blurring through the woods. No use in waiting to drive there, not with Krista spilling more about old men and hunters with every minute that passed. Less than ten minutes later he was strolling round the Grill from the back. The place was still full of people enjoying dinner, crowded enough that just about anybody could’ve overheard her. Fuck.
Pasting on a smile, Mal waved the waitress off as he slipped through the door. Wasn’t like he could compel every one of them, he just had to hope that Krista’s voice hadn’t hit opera diva pitch as she’d passed on every one of his secrets. Spotting her with another blonde, he held on to that smile, gritting his teeth behind it. ”There you are love. Got a little merry with your new friend, did ya?” The smile didn’t reach his eyes as he looked at the other woman. ”I guess I should thank ya for lookin’ after her. Ta.” He nodded to her, making sure he remembered her face to wipe all of this from what was bound to be an empty head later on – after Krista had passed out in his bed. Not worrying about where they were, he levered her up out of the seat. Gathering her close enough to whisper the ”sssh now love, we’re headin’ home,” in her ear. Hopefully it’d hold her until they got out of her and he could shake her for the little slip. Holding on tight, he started towards the exit. Lucky for her this wasn’t still the 19th century, she wouldn’t get whipped for her buggering the whole thing up.
