━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ DESPITE THE BUSINESS DEAL going well━extremely well, actually━Curtis hadn’t shaken his son’s strange behaviour from his mind when he’d asked Adam about getting lunch with him today. Curtis was in Whitmore, so why couldn’t they have a nice meal together on one of Adam’s breaks? Was he embarrassed of his dad? Nah, there were a lot of lame dads out there, but Curtis was not one of them. He supplied the school with their light source, for God’s sake; how much more interesting could you get?
Well, he had Adam’s schedule━sent to Liz and himself at the beginning of each semester for planning and safety precautions━so he’d just swing by anyway. What was the harm in that? Adam was supposed to be in American History right now, just down the hall, and his timetable said he had a two-hour break between classes; Curtis just had to wait another half hour for Adam to be done. So he did.
And when the students spilled out of the lecture hall like a dam breaking free, twenty minutes earlier than it read on his timetable, Adam wasn’t amongst them. He triple-checked; he’d recognize his own son, after all.
But would he? It wasn’t like Adam to skip class unless it was an emergency, and while fear bubbled briefly through the pit of his stomach, Curtis calmed himself. He’d wait until Adam was supposed to be home and then ask him about it, never mind worrying about if he’d ever come. He would. Everything was fine… it was probably just this whole new girlfriend thing making Adam get a big head about it.
To quell his anxiety, he decided it was better to just ask. So he did━and the professor had no idea who he was talking about. And when Curtis showed I.D. at the main office and asked about a student by the name of Adam Hawthorne, he finally received a solid answer, though it wasn’t one he’d planned for.
No record of a student by that name.
What the hell?
Finally arriving home to an empty house (he double-checked Adam’s room, and even found a textbook from Whitmore. How deep did this lie go?), Curtis eventually settled in the living room with a glass of cool water, staring at the dark screen of a TV without power, just thinking.
And when the door opened, Curtis leaned forward on the couch and twisted to find his son coming through the door, desperately trying to keep his emotions under wraps. He wouldn’t scream. He wouldn’t get angry. “Hey, kid. How was school?” Curtis asked, motioning to one of the recliners across from the couch. “Si’down. I was at Whitmore today to talk to Mr. Jacobsen about that business deal I told you about. Since you said you were busy, I figured I wouldn’t bug you. You had chemistry today, right?” That was Wednesdays, but Curtis wondered if he could catch him in the lie━considering how well Adam had this mapped, though, he doubted it. He couldn’t believe Adam could be so deceptive, and to his parents of all people. And what the hell for? They wouldn’t have penalized him for taking a year off school━maybe they would’ve been disappointed, but that was no reason for all this.

━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
Adam was never a good liar.
A well-crafted lie needed consistency and most importantly, a good memory.
Adam had neither. It was a miracle he had managed to keep this lying going on for as long as he did, but then again, he mainly kept this lie up because he wanted to protect his dad from the truth about what he was. How do you go to your human father and tell him that you are not human? It's not something you can share while having a meal together, either. Adam didn't want to scare his dad off and most importantly, he didn't want him to look at Adam differently once the truth comes into the light.
Adam kept replaying that conversation from Ria's birthday in his head over and over again, his heart clenching with anxiety at how close his dad had come to unraveling his lie. The thought of his dad following his made-up schedule to locate him after one of his lectures made him feel sick to his stomach as he shifted a bit on his seat, overcome with the urge to bolt back to Whitmore just to make sure his dad wasn't looking for him.
But he'd assured himself, stupidly so, that his dad wasn't going to follow up with his words especially after turning down the request to eat something together and forced himself to focus on the lecture being given to him along with other students like him. Supernatural ones.
Once he was done with classes for the day, he bid his friends farewell and began making his way out, jogging to the bus station, so he could catch the first bus back home. Adam connected his earphones into his phone to help him cancel the surrounding noises, just so he doesn't get overwhelmed. He hopped off the bus, bidding the familiar bus driver farewell before he started making his way to the Hawthorne residence. Adam fetched his keys from the back pocket of his jeans and opened the door, all while taking off his earphones now that he's back home. Adam was about to head upstairs for his bedroom when he heard his dad's voice. His steps halted as he clutched the strap of his backpack, his lips stretching to form a flighty smile. "It was great, yeah!" Adam was quick to speak up, his eyes barely settling on his dad for long. He hated lying to him, hated the fact that he couldn't be upfront with him or his mom. It made him feel ... awful. His feet were burning with the desire to run away, but he couldn't. Not yet.
Si’down. I was at Whitmore today to talk to Mr. Jacobsen about that business deal I told you about. Since you said you were busy, I figured I wouldn’t bug you. You had chemistry today, right?
Adam slowly began making his way to one of the recliners, almost dragging his feet because the beginning of that conversation wasn't something he was particularly looking forward to. Adam dropped his backpack on the floor and sat down with a soft sigh leaving his lips. "That's, uh, that's great! How did it go?" Did he have chemistry today? Adam racked his brain for the schedule, but he couldn't remember it in perfect detail. The young boy rubbed his palms against his thighs as he felt sweat form on the back of his neck. "Um, yeah! Yeah, I had chemistry today. It was fun! We have a new assignment, but hey, it's a good thing that I love chem." Adam said with a chuckle following. Phew. That was close. "Speaking of which, I should, uh, I should go and do that assignment now. Gotta keep up my grades, y'know." Adam pushed himself up from the recliner, his feet aching to carry him out of the room with quickened steps, but he can't or else it will seem suspicious.
Adam was definitely feeling proud of himself for not blowing his cover and for being good with his lies. Maybe he did have the consistency and the memory for it, after all. Good job, Adam.

━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ ADAM WAS NEVER LIKE THIS. In all honesty, Curtis couldn’t be angry because he was so worried. Was Adam in some sort of trouble? If he wasn’t, though, and it turned out he was lying for no good reason, then Curtis’ anger would definitely make an appearance. All he could hope for was that this was some sort of misunderstanding, and that they’d find a neutral ground. He knew, though, that his soft spot for Adam almost made up his whole being, and he’d probably fold eventually. It was hard to be a strict dad when your son was actually your nephew, and you’d almost lost him as easily as your brother.
Did he have any reason to be mad, then? Was Curtis a hypocrite? He didn’t think of that right away━that was something deeper and a hell of a lot more complicated. This was critical to day-to-day life, though. Curtis and Liz not being Adam’s biological parents wouldn’t change the fact that he was their son, but not going to college would directly affect Adam’s future.
What did Adam even have in his bag? Was it all for show?
“It went well. He agreed to come aboard with us, so we have a sort of ambassador for business with Sweden now.” Curtis smiled tightly. He was happy about it, though everything with Adam overshadowed what he’d accomplished today.
‘Um, yeah! Yeah, I had chemistry today. It was fun! We have a new assignment, but hey, it’s a good thing that I love chem…’
Curtis’ expression began to fade, just listening to all of the crap coming out of Adam’s mouth. He was never a great liar, but usually it was about something stupid━not like this. It made Curtis sick to his stomach. He watched Adam stand and start to shuffle like he was going anywhere, and finally Curtis spoke, clutching his glass tightly. “Your schedule says you had American History today, not Chemistry.” He grumbled, willing himself not to stand. He didn’t want to tower over Adam or upset him, so instead, Curtis straightened his posture and sighed, taking another sip from his water.
“Sit back down, Adam. I went to the office, and they had no record of you at all. Where have you been all day? And don’t lie to me again; I don’t want to hear it.”

━ heavy lies the head that wears the crown ━
It went well. He agreed to come aboard with us, so we have a sort of ambassador for business with Sweden now.
Adam's brows quirked up, looking impressed by that. "That's pretty cool, dad. I'm happy for you." And he really was. At least that part wasn't a lie. As much as he wanted to linger in his dad's presence, he was too scared that the truth might slip out of his lips and he might out himself. But as it turns out, he really didn't have to worry about exposing himself because his dad had managed to figure it all out on his own without Adam's help in the matter.
Your schedule says you had American History today, not Chemistry.
The small opening he saw was immediately slammed shut by his dad's words. Adam stood exactly where he was, his shoulders tensing as his eyes remained fixed on the stairs. So close, yet so far away. At that moment, he wished the ground would open and swallow him whole, so he wouldn't be stuck in this situation. His lips parted to let out a shaky exhalation, his eyes clenching shut. Crap. Adam bit down on his bottom lip until he felt the flesh turn raw. "I━" His brain scrambled for a lie, but he soon became aware of the fact that he couldn't think of one at all. "That's, um, that's weird, maybe it's just a mistake with the schedule or━ or something." Adam said with a brief chuckle that soon turned into a grimace. Just shut up. Please. He told himself over and over again in his head because he was just making it worse for himself.
Sit back down, Adam. I went to the office, and they had no record of you at all. Where have you been all day? And don’t lie to me again; I don’t want to hear it.
The strap of his backpack slipped off his shoulder at the revelation, and the backpack soon dropped onto the floor with a thud. Oh god. This was his worst nightmare and at this moment, he desperately wanted to wake up from that dream, but it was all too clear to him that he wasn't dreaming. It was reality.
Adam gulped past the lump that was lodged in his throat as he slowly turned around to look at his dad, his lips parting and closing a couple of times before his shoulders soon sagged in defeat, and he started making his way over to the chair, his hands rubbing up and down his thighs, palms feeling incredibly sweaty, his nerves going haywire. "Dad, I━" Adam's lips uselessly parted and closed a few times. "I'm not lying━" He paused when he realized that his sentence started with a lie and his lips pressed together into a thin line because he really shouldn't test his dad on this. Adam felt like a cornered animal and honestly, he wasn't so sure that he could tell his dad about the actual college he was going to. It would shatter his world, wouldn't it? It would make it blatantly clear that supernatural beings exist, and he wasn't so sure he could do something like that to his dad.
"Okay, um, yes... I lied. I never got into Whitmore." Adam revealed, his voice was small as he crossed his arms but not in a defiant manner, it was more or less to self-soothe. "I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry about me, you have enough on your plate already and I━" Adam ran his tongue over the bottom of his lip before he caught it between his teeth again, gnawing down on it for a few moments before he released it. "I just, um, I wasn't ready to go to college yet, especially after everything that has happened..." Adam still found it difficult to meet his disappointed dad's eyes. "So I thought I could just make up this small lie about going to college for a few months until I'm ready to go to school again." Adam uncrossed his arms as he tugged on a loose string that was hanging from the sleeve of his hoodie. "I━I'm sorry, dad."

━ and i came to realize; i have more to offer the world ━ CURTIS WASN’T ENTIRELY SURE what to expect anymore━apparently, he didn’t know his son as well as he thought he did. Adam could either keep lying or finally tell the truth, or ignore both those options and rush upstairs to barricade himself in his room━it was really anybody’s guess at this point, and that made him sad. Was this his fault? Was he too busy with work, didn’t pay enough attention to Adam? Was this some sort of adoptive child syndrome, or did that only happen when they knew they were adopted? Normal kids didn’t lie to their parents like this, did they? He had, but that was… oh God, was Adam involved in dr-gs?
All Curtis could hope for was the truth. But, as Adam sat back down and began talking, he was worried it might never come. Anger washed over him in waves of heat, making him clench so hard around his glass he thought it might burst in his hand. He sucked in a sharp breath as soon as the ‘I’m not lying’ fluttered into the air. It hung there, stale and stiff, cushioned by silence from all directions. Thankfully, it seemed to stop there, and Adam tried again.
‘Okay, um, yes... I lied. I never got into Whitmore. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry about me, you have enough on your plate already and I━’
Finally, Curtis let out the breath that was stuck in his chest, dark eyes trained on his son. He had to remember not to immediately fold and go soft; Adam had still lied for months and, though his reasons were understandable, it didn’t change what he’d done. Curtis was just happy it wasn’t something far worse (if he were to believe Adam, that is). Which… he did. Liz would definitely have something to say about this, and he trusted her judgement a little more, but for now, he’d handle this in the way he thought was best.
“Come here,” Curtis sighed, patting the spot next to him once the boy had explained. He sipped from his drink and put it on the coffee table (over a coaster, of course, he didn’t want Liz to kill them both). Though he didn’t technically fold, this was clearly something Adam hadn’t felt comfortable telling him, and that worried Curtis━what else could he be hiding? And why didn’t he feel he could come forward about it? They’d tried to talk to Adam, perhaps pressing him a little too much, but eventually, they decided to let him figure it out on his own━Curtis wasn’t blind; he could see it weighing on his son’s shoulders, but they’d assumed he found a peer to confide in. “I’m sorry you didn’t feel comfortable enough to tell us, but you know that lying is almost never the right choice, especially for something like this. There’s no problem with taking time off before going back to school; I did.” The reasons were vastly different (hopefully), but he didn’t need to start explaining that part of his life to his kid right now. “I might be interested in my business, and always working hard to provide a good life for the three of us, but, first and foremost, I’m your dad. I’ll never be too busy for you, okay? Promise me you understand that.” He sighed softly, slipping a hand up to grip Adam’s shoulder.
“I forgive you, but it wasn’t a small lie. This was huge and deceitful and incredibly unlike you. I know things have been hard lately; I understand losing someone close to you and how traumatic that can be, but don’t push us away because of it. Not to toot my own horn here, but you’re lucky, y’know.” Suddenly, a grin broke across his features, crinkling the crow’s feet on the edges of his eyes. “To have parents who love and support you and just want to see you grow and better yourself. We’ll always be by your side, Adam, through everything. Just… promise me the lies stop here, okay? Is there anything else you have to tell me?” God, he hoped not, but he’d keep to his word and get through anything else Adam had to divulge.
